MATH

The objective of the math discipline is to develop students’ proficiency in quantitative thinking and analysis. Students develop a view that mathematics is not just a collection of definitions, algorithms and/or theorems to memorize and apply, but rather is a coherent and tightly organized body of knowledge that provides a way to think about and understand a broad array of phenomena. The mathematics curriculum provides students with the capacity to use mathematical models to guide their understanding of the world around them.

Algebra 1

This is a high school level course offered to middle school eight-graders that can show proficiency in mathematics. Students taking this course in middle school are expected to begin HS with Geometry provided that they score a B or higher and how proficiency in their math high school placement exam. Algebra 1 is a foundational course for the college bound student in which (s) he will learn to reason symbolically. The first semester emphasizes the language of algebra, operating with rational numbers, inequalities, monomials, and polynomials. The second semester emphasizes functions and graphs, lines and slopes, systems of open sentences, radicals, quadratics, and factoring.

Math 6

Level: Middle School, Workshop Credits: 10 Recommended Prerequisite: None

This course enables the student to improve fundamental skills in everyday arithmetic, including basic operations of decimals and percents and solving problems with geometric shapes. The course focuses on concepts, procedures, and vocabulary that students will need in order to be successful in upper-level algebra and geometry courses are introduced and continually practiced. Students begin with a general review of the four basic operations. They are introduced to exponents, geometric formulas, algebraic concepts, ratios, percentages, and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing signed numbers. 6th Grade Math students work extensively with fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and estimating. Problem solving strategies are also an integral part of the curriculum.

Math 7

Level: Middle School, Workshop Credits: 10 Recommended Prerequisite: Math 6

This course is designed to prepare students for 8th grade and high school mathematics by improving upon everyday arithmetic and extending math knowledge to include a transition to more abstract thinking. The first semester focuses on the Number System, Ratios & Proportional Relationships, and Geometry. Students will apply and extend their understandings of operations with integers and fractions to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers. In the Geometry unit students will draw, construct, describe geometrical figures, and describe the relationships between them. The second semester focuses on Expressions & Equations, Geometry & Expressions & Equations, and Statistics & Probability. Students will begin with using properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions, and then solve real-life and mathematical problems using expressions, equations and geometric formulas. SCIENCE

The objective of the science discipline is to develop a student’s perception of science or engineering as a way of understanding the world around them. As a result of science coursework, students understand that scientific modes are useful to represent phenomena in the physical world and are able to perceive patterns and regularity, make predictions, and test those predictions against evidence and reason.

Science 6

Level: Middle School, Workshop Credits: 10 Recommended Prerequisite: None

The sixth-grade science course assists students in becoming life-long learners who grow in their understanding of the world. The nature of science includes the concepts that scientific explanations are based on logical thinking; are subject to rules of evidence; are consistent with observational, inferential, and experimental evidence; are open to rational critique; and are subject to refinement and change with the addition of new scientific evidence. The nature of science includes the concept that science can provide explanations about nature, can predict potential consequences of actions, but cannot be used to answer all questions.

Science 7

Level: Middle School, Workshop Credits: 10 Recommended Prerequisite: Science 6

The Life Science standards emphasize a more complex understanding of change, cycles, patterns, and relationships in the living world. Students build on basic principles related to these concepts by exploring the cellular organization and the classification of organisms; the dynamic relationships among organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems; and change as a result of the transmission of genetic information from generation to generation. This scientific view defines the idea that explanations of nature are developed and tested using observation, experimentation, models, evidence, and systematic processes based on logical thinking. Inquiry skills at this level include organization and mathematical analysis of data, manipulation of variables in experiments, and identification of sources of experimental error.

Science 8

Level: Middle School, Workshop Credits: 10 Recommended Prerequisite: Science 7

The Physical Science Standards stress an in depth understanding of the nature and structure of matter and the characteristic of energy. The standards place considerable emphasis on the technological application of Physical Science Principles. Major areas covered by the standards include the organization and use of the periodic table; physical and chemical changes; nuclear reactions; temperature and heat; sound; light; electricity and magnetism; and work, force, and motion. The Physical Science standards continue to build on skills of systematic investigation with a clear focus on variables and repeated trials. Student will plan and conduct research involving both classroom experimentation and literature reviews from written and electronic resources.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The objective of the social studies discipline is to develop a student’s understanding of the fundamental values and principles of democracy as well as the historic events that gave rise to and subsequently shaped American democracy. Historical thinking distinguishes itself from other modes of thought in that it sees the objects of its analysis as situated in a particular time and place, and as having emerged from a particular nexus of developments. Through Fusion’s curriculum, students understand the world, nation and society around them and are able to make informed decisions about civic issues that affect them.

Social Studies 6

Level: Middle School, Workshop Credits: 10 Recommended Prerequisite: None

All students take the SOL test for United States History: 1877 to the Present at the end of the course.

Social Studies 8

Level: Middle School, Workshop Credits: 10 Recommended Prerequisite: Social Studies 7

Students will examine the roles citizens play in the political, governmental, and economic systems in the United States. They will examine the constitutions of California and the United States; identify the rights, duties, and responsibilities of citizens; and describe the structure and operation of government at the local, state, and national levels. Students investigate the process by which decisions are made in the American market economy and explain the government’s role in it.
