Message From the Board Chair
One of the great privileges of serving on the Board of Fulbright Canada is having the opportunity to engage with the students, mentors and scholars participating in the Fulbright Canada program. We appreciate the opportunity to observe their unbridled brilliance, intellectual curiosity and commitment to academic discipline. Further, we applaud their energy, rigor and pursuit of excellence. Despite the differences of their respective fields of study, the students, mentors and scholars share a mutual commitment to the ideals of the Fulbright program. Even more, they desire to be impactful. They are determined to use the support of the Fulbright Canada program to solve intractable problems and develop new ideas, scholarly works and technologies to advance our communities on both sides of the U.S. - Canadian border and beyond. Leaders often talk about hope and change. The students, mentors and scholars exemplify hope and change through their commitment to, and participation in the Fulbright Canada program.

Message From the Chief Executive Officer On behalf of the entire Fulbright Canada community, I am both proud and pleased to present the 2019 Annual Report of the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America. Our extended community includes our tireless board of directors, my colleagues at the Secretariat, our brilliant grantees, our engaged alumni, and our dedicated university and private sector partners. This report chronicles our activities in 2019 and celebrates the many accomplishments of our grantees, alumni, partners, donors, and friends. I remain inspired by their successes and encouraged by their dedication. Fulbright Canada had yet another extremely positive year, supporting incredible students and scholars, and, at the same time, introducing innovative new programming in collaboration with the two governments, MITACS, the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation, NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, and others. Meeting our mission means a firm and unwavering commitment to our core goals – supporting excellence, inspiring young leaders, and enhancing mutual understanding. Fulbright is a field-open program with interests in a wide variety of disciplines. Fulbright Canada has focused on issues relating to comparative public policy, public health, economic development, sustainability and wellness in the far north, indigenous peoples (and especially indigenous youth leadership), the growing importance of STEM research, and a broad commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The Fulbright Program
Long regarded as the world’s premiere academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program attracts exceptional students and scholars from more than 160 countries.
conduct research, teach, or undertake a combination of activities for one semester or a full academic year at one of our partner universities. These chairs develop long-term partnerships between Fulbright Canada and the university and build the university’s capacity for excellence in research.
The first cohort of Canada-U.S. Fulbright award recipients was named in 1991. Since that time, more than two thousand distinguished students, scholars, and professionals have participated in this educational exchange program. Canada-U.S. Fulbright students and scholars conduct research, teach, or study in their host country for either one semester or a full academic year. In 2018-19 Fulbright Canada supported X outstanding Canadians and Y exceptional American students and scholars.
The scope of the Fulbright program in Canada continues to grow. Fulbright Canada has introduced a number of new programs, and expanded key existing programs for our scholars, students, and professional grantees. Excellent examples of this growth and our innovations include the growing research chair program in Canada and the U.S. and various youth centered programs - both highlighted in this report.
Traditional Fulbright Awards for students are intended for graduate students and junior professionals who wish to study and/or conduct research in the host country. In addition to the Traditional Fulbright awards, scholars in both countries are invited to take up one of the ??? Fulbright Visiting Research Chairs at ??? of North America’s best universities. These chairs are intended to enable emerging and established scholars, post-doctoral researchers, and experienced professionals to Fulbright Canada Annual Report 2019

Fulbright Canada - MITACS Globalink Program The Fulbright Canada – Mitacs Globalink Research program aims to give students the opportunity to grow, both academically and professionally, through participation in world-class research projects and exposure to major industry players in their fields of study. Over the next three years, this partnership will bring up to 75 senior undergraduate students or graduate students from the United States to conduct research in Canada. Starting in 2020, the first cohort of students will spend 12 weeks at Canadian universities focusing on research projects under the supervision of faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.

The Arctic Initiative Building on the success of the inaugural round of the Fulbright Arctic Initiative from 2015-16, the second round of Fulbright Arctic scholars were welcomed from 201819. The scholars worked collaboratively on two interdisciplinary thematic research areas, while working on independent research projects. The resilient communities research group focused on health inequities to ensure that Arctic communities can develop pathways to thrive. The sustainable economies research group articulated and acknowledged the complexity and diversity of Arctic economies, while focusing on how risk can be better assessed, managed, and communicated in the Arctic so as to enhance economic sustainability.

Killam Fellowships Program Undergraduate exchange between Canada and the United States, supported by the American Killam Trusts The Killam Fellowships Program, supported by an endowment from the American Killam Trusts, is designed to develop a cadre of young leaders committed to enhancing mutual understanding between Canada and the United States. The Killam Fellowships Program provides exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada and the United States with the opportunity to spend either one semester or a full academic year in the other country during their undergraduate career.

Youth Initiatives Maple Leaf Foundation Exchange The Fulbright Canada - Maple Leaf Foundation Exchange Program is sponsored by the Maple Leaf Foundation, a Boston-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing mutual understanding between the next generation in both Canada and the United States, and administered and promoted by Fulbright Canada. The Maple Leaf Foundation partnered with Fulbright Canada in the Fall of 2017 with the goal of modernizing and expanding what has been a truly extraordinary and lifechanging program. The program offers a combination of academic, cultural, social, and interpersonal experiences. The experience was exceptional for all involved. In 2019, ten students from BostonTech Academy travelled to Russell, Ontario as guests of Saint Thomas Aquinas School and ten students from Saint Thomas Aquinas then travelled to Boston as guests of Boston Tech Academy.

Youth Ambassadors Program The Youth Ambassador Program brings high-bring together high school students and adult educators to promote mutual understanding, increase leadership skills, and prepare youth to make a difference in their communities. The Youth Ambassadors are exception student leaders with proven commitment to community involvement to bring about positive change. They receive funding to travel to the United States for three weeks to explore themes of civic education, community service, leadership development, and social inclusion.

The Fulbright Canada Alumni Advisory Board will work alongside the Fulbright Canada Secretariat to provide alumni perspectives on recruitment, programming, fundraising, and impact.
The Fulbright Canada Alumni Association will extend the Fulbright international exchange into a lifelong experience for the alumni of the Fulbright Canada and Killam Fellowships programs. EducationUSA Helping Canadians with their educational goals EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network which promotes U.S. higher education by offering accurate, comprehensive, and current information about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States. EducationUSA also provides services to the U.S. higher education community to help institutional leaders meet their recruitment and campus internationalization goals. This year has been one of deepening relationships with partners for EducationUSA in Canada. We ran our signature event, the Guidance Counsellor Forum, in four cities in March (Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa) and in two cities in September (Edmonton, Calgary). Each event drew between 20-40 guidance counsellors and as many as 20 U.S. university admissions officers. Additionally, Advisor Jenika Heim participated in many education fairs and gave many presentations across Canada. EducationUSA school visits included Edmonton (3), Calgary (1), Montreal (7), Quebec City (3), Toronto (1), and Vancouver (5). EducationUSA made 17 school visits within the Ottawa area. Fulbright Canada received a visit from Regional EducationUSA Advising Coordinator Maria Mercedes Salmon and EducationUSA Program Officer for WHA Jennifer Brown during April 2019. They, along with Jenika, attended the NAGAP forum in Toronto and scouted opportunities for expanding the EducationUSA network in Canada. In June, admitted students in Ottawa and Toronto attended Pre-Departure orientations at the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Consulate, with support from the Public Affairs team. EducationUSA continues to expand digitally by providing live webinars on Facebook monthly (“First Wednesdays�) and enriching our Instagram content. EducationUSA completed all International Education Week (Nov 2019) programming on Instagram this year with great engagement and success. The channel gained more than 150 new followers and ran 11 live chats.

We expressed an unmodified audit opinion on those financial statements in our report dated December 3, 2019. The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations applied in the preparation of the audited financial statements of Fullbright Canada. Highlights Fulbright Canada at Toronto International Film Festival Fulbright Canada and the Toronto chapter of the Fulbright Canada Alumni Association hosted its second annual alumni reception in celebration of the Toronto International Film Festival. Approximately 50 Fulbright and Killam alumni gathered in the heart of Toronto’s entertainment district in the midst of the world-renowned festival. The reception gave alumni the opportunity to interact with each other as well as representatives from the U.S. Consulate General in Toronto. Following the reception, the guests attended the international premiere of the movie ‘Blow the Man Down’ at the prestigious TIFF Bell Lightbox Cinema.
Fall Orientation The annual Fall Orientation was held in Ottawa on September 14th and 15th. The 2019-2020 U.S. Fulbright Scholars and Students and all new Killam Fellows came together and participated in a range of academic, professional, and cultural activities, including panels and the famous hockey game.
Killam Spring Seminar Every spring, Fulbright Canada hosts a Spring Seminar for the outgoing cohort of Killam Fellows so that they may conclude their exchange sharing experiences and strengthening connections. Fulbright Canada Annual Report 2019

Massey College: What’s in Store for Canada-U.S. Relations In partnership with Massey College and Johns Hopkins University, Fulbright Canada hosted a panel discussion in Toronto on the future of CanadaU.S. Relations. The top U.S. diplomat in Canada, Richard M. Mills, Jr., and Fulbright Canada alumnus Christopher Sands, Fulbright Student 1999-2000 joined panelists to discuss the challenges and opportunities for the Trudeau government in managing the bilateral relationship in the years ahead.
