Blue Horizon Lodge in Belize

An Immersive Flats Fishing Experience at a Laidback Boutique Lodge Blue Horizon

Dear Angler,

Many saltwater anglers know of Lincoln Westby and the “Permit Alley” area near Placencia, Belize. And yet, Blue Horizon Lodge can fly under the radar for some compared to more popular lodges in Northern Belize and Mexico. As I traveled to Blue Horizon in August 2022, I will admit to having a bit of healthy skepticism. 80% of shots to tailing fish? Reliable tarpon fishing in deeper channels? Guides and staff willing to shift schedules or elongate time on the water to provide tide-optimized fishing? We have all experienced advertised features that turn out to be more hype than reality. After a week of less-than-ideal conditions, I am happy to report Blue Horizon is asadvertised. For permit-focused anglers that want long fishing days and a relaxed lodge experience, this is your lodge. While still at Blue Horizon last August, I was already plotting my return. There is something special about this lodge. Its location on its own 7-acre island, along with regular wade fishing sessions on pancake flats and shoals for tailing permit, create an immersive flats fishing experience. The flexible schedule, help-yourself-cooler-full-of-beer, and evening cornhole sessions combine for a laidback feel around the lodge. Blue Horizon’s knack at mixing quality service with a relaxed vibe is uncanny. The simple yet tastefully remodeled rooms are the perfect example of this.

And those are just a few of the reasons I am so excited for the opportunity to share this lodge and fishing experience with you. Rest assured that this week has prime tides for this particuar fishery. Pack light on the clothes. Bring a good pair of saltwater wading boots. Keep your crab and shrimp patterns lightly weighted and always with a weedguard. And somewhere between the Placencia airport and the boat ride out to the lodge, begin to settle into an island rhythm.

Sincerely, Nick Swingle

The lodge is located in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. While opportunities exist for a variety of species including bonefish, this program is tailormade for fly anglers wanting to pursue permit. In fact, this is largely regarded as the best place int he world to fish for tailing permit. Guides will typically target permit when the tides are right. During the migration, there are good opportunities to fish for large tarpon, usually in deeper channels with occasional chances at singles or small schools along the flats.

What to Expect About Blue Horizon Lodge

Founded in 1997 by legendary guide Lincoln Westby, Blue Horizon Fly Fishing Lodge operates inside South Water Caye Marine Reserve, in an area known as “Permit Alley”. This region is regarded as the finest Permit fishing in the Caribbean. The rebuilt lodge is located on the same footprint as the original and positioned to maximize fishing on the flats during the best tides with the best guides during the best times of the day. Each cabana is completely refurbished and furnished with two full-size beds, a private bathroom and on-demand hot water showers. A/C is standard in all rooms. Rod racks, shelving, and hangers will help you organize your gear during your stay.
