FBFC Fighting for GMO Labeling in DC In case you missed the news, our GM went to Capital Hill to fight the DARK Act with, in addition to those pictured below, Jerry Greenfield from Ben & Jerry’s, the CEOs of Patagonia, Lundberg Family Farms, Popcorn Indiana, Rejuvenative Foods, and Pete & Gerry’s Organics, as well as executives from Cliff Bar & Amy’s Kitchen. The legislation is actually called the “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015” but it has rightly been dubbed the “Denying Americans the Right-to-Know” (DARK) Act, because of its true nature. This act would preempt states from being able to require the labeling of GMO food and prohibit bogus “natural” claims. It would also block states, counties and municipalities from regulating GMO crop production to protect human health and the environment. Unfortunately, by a vote of 275 to 150, the DARK Act passed the House on July 23rd. Now the act is on its way to the Senate. “It’s outrageous that some House lawmakers voted to ignore the wishes of nine out of 10 Americans,” said Scott Faber, senior vice president of government affairs for EWG. “Today’s vote to deny Americans the right to know what’s in their food and how it’s grown was a foregone conclusion. This House was bought and paid for by corporate interests, so it’s no surprise that it passed a bill to block states and the FDA from giving consumers basic information about their food.” The representative for Asheville, Patrick T. McHenry (R), voted against 93% of Americans who want the right to know! His office can be reached by phone at (202) 225-2576, so please let him know what you think. If you live outside of the city, you may have a different rep, so here’s a handy resource on the Alliance for Natural Health website where you can type in your zip code to find your rep and see how they voted: http://aahf.convio.net/ site/VoteCenter?page=voteInfo&voteId=22937

Bobby at the base of the Capital.

Unfortunately, our GM was not able to meet with McHenry when he went to DC, but Bobby’s team did have 11 appointments, including the offices of representatives Barr (R-KY), Cardenas (D-CA), Cook (R-CA), Payne (D-NJ), Edwards (D-MD), Doyle (D-PA), Clyburn (D-SC), Hudson (R-NC), Schumer (D-NY), Cardin (D-MD) and Gardner (R-CO). Most were very glad to hear from people who actually worked in the food industry because there has been some misinformation out there about how labeling will affect the price of food. Monsanto’s people have been saying the price will go up because of repackaging and this is simply NOT the case. In fact, this act would virtually eliminate the FDA’s ability to craft a national GMO labeling system. It would codify the current, broken voluntary labeling system, create a GMO “safety” review system based on industry science, allow “natural” foods to contain GMO ingredients and preempt state efforts to end misleading “natural” claims. The truth is, Americans overwhelmingly want the right to know. Polls show 90% of Americans support labeling of GMO food.

Bobby with David Bronner from Dr. Bronner’s, Gary Hirshberbeg from Stoneyfield and Bill Whyte from Badger Balm.

Most of you reading this also know that bogus “natural” claims have created enormous consumer confusion about GMOs. 64 nations already require labeling including Russia, China, the EU, and important trading partners in Asia. More than 1.4 million Americans have joined a petition urging FDA to require labeling of GMO food. In addition, hundreds of food companies including the FBFC urged President Obama to honor his pledge to require GMO labeling. The link to the actual letter is here: http:// www.justlabelit.org/obamaletter/ From Just Label It .org:

Dispelling GMO Labeling Myths: • GMO labeling will not increase food prices. Companies frequently change labels to highlight new innovations. • Voluntary labeling will not work. Companies have been allowed to make voluntary non-GMO disclosures since 2001, but consumers are more confused than ever. • GMO crops do not feed the world. Conventional and GMO corn and soybean yields have increased at the same rate. What’s more, U.S. farmers produce only 4% of rice, wheat, fruits, and vegetables, and most US corn and soybeans are used for animal feed and ethanol, not food. • GMO crops have increased herbicide applications. Expanding the use of GMO crops has increased annual applications of glyphosate – a probable human carcinogen – from 16 million pounds to more than 280 million pounds. • GMO crops have led to more toxic herbicides. As weeds have become resistant to glyphosate, farmers have turned to more toxic weed killers linked to cancer, Parkinson’s disease and reproductive problems. • GMO crops have not reduced soil erosion. Adoption of soil-conserving farm practices were made in response to “conservation compliance” provisions of the 1985 Farm Bill, not GMO crops. http://www.ewg.org/agmag/2014/10/little-groundtruth-world-food-day 1
