Premier's Summer Reading Challenge You th Holid ay progr am

5–12 years

This summer children from Kindergarten to Year 7 are encouraged to read for a minimum of 15 minutes a day from 3 December 2012 until 11 February 2013 in the Premier‘s Summer Reading Challenge (in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA) 2012-13. You can register online at summerreadingchallenge.org.au or collect a form and reading log from the library. All children who finish the Challenge will receive a letter of congratulations from the Premier and go into the prize draw. Happy summer reading!

Fremantle School Holiday Guide Dismantle‘s Summer School Holiday Program Dismantle dismantle.org.au Dismantle is a not-for-profit organisation based in Fremantle that promotes the use of bicycles as a preferred method of transport to contribute to healthier people, happier communities and a thriving planet.

Kites and Bikes Make your own kite in the dismantle workshop from recycled plastic bags. Practice flying your new kite on your bike‘s handle bars in the Esplanade Park. Once you‘ve perfected your kite flying skills we‘ll have a ‗slow bike race‘ where the aim is to ride as slow as possible without stopping, whit your kite attached to the handle bars of your bike. Date: Wednesday 2 January Time : 10.00 am–2.00 pm What to bring : A thicker plastic bag (we‘ll supply some if you forget), your bike, a helmet, a water bottle and a packed lunch (we supply fruit and snacks).

Recycled Bike Part Creations & Bike-chain Jewellery: Get creative and make sculptures, objects or creatures using recycled bike parts. With our help you can turn scrap metal into works of art or beautiful jewellery, we‘ll also teach you how to clean and polish metal parts so your creation is briliiantly shiny. Bike Maintenance Course A hands-on session covering the essentials of bike maintenance. Learn how to service your bike to keep it road ready and safe at all times. Bike Beach Picnic Enjoy a social ride to the beach for a day of fun sports. Meet at Dismantle workshop where we‘ll give you a quick safety talk on riding in groups. We‘ll then ride down the bike path behind dismantle to South Beach together as a group where we‘ll have summer sports are set up (cricket, volleyball or badminton). We‘ll have a lunch of hot chips before riding back together and finish back at Dismantle workshop. Dates: Wednesday 23 January Time: 10.00 am,–2.00 pm What to bring: Your bike, a helmet, sunscreen, hat, a water bottle, games such as balls or frisbees, towel and bathers (backpack definitely recommended).

Bicycle Basket Weaving, Film & Group Ride Use recycled plastic strips and simple weaving techniques to make your own bicycle basket while we play a projected film at the workshop while you weave. After the film we‘ll help you attach your new baskets to your bikes and ride together to the grassed area at Bather‘s Beach for lunch, before returning to Dismantle workshop. Date:: Wednesday 30t January Time: 10.00 am–2.00 pm What to bring: Your bike, a helmet, sunscreen, hat, a water bottle and packed lunch (we supply fruit and snacks).

Cost of the Dismantle Workshops We offer a few options for payment: School holiday membership: $50 per child: gives 1 child access to all school holiday workshops. Pay as you go: $15 per child per individual school holiday workshop. Discounted membership cost: If you are already a Dismantle member pay just $30 to enroll your child in all of the holiday workshops. See dismantle.org.au for more information on membership.
