GMU students present climate change survey results Skyline’s advanced environmental science classes hear about local perspectives By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report Students at George Mason University’s Applied Conservation Studies track, one of two semester-long undergraduate programs in the SmithsonianMason School of Conservation Studies Program (S-MSC) here, took advantage of Election Day to conduct a survey of local attitudes toward climate change. Three days later on Nov. 8, those S-MSC students presented a power point of their finding to James Kenney’s Advanced Environmental Science classes of juniors and seniors at Skyline High School. The presentation included introductions of the college students, their backgrounds, majors and areas of specific interest in pursuing their degrees; the methodology used in the survey; and results. Students presented the results of community interviews they conducted as part of the section on climate change science, where they were learning about

the role of community perspectives in implementing effective local strategies to address climate change. The subsequent give and take indicated that as Skyline teacher Kenney observed of his class members, “These are our students who will be the movers on these kinds of issues in the future.” In response to questions about attitudes versus the science on climate change, the college students noted that the science connecting human activity, particularly the emission of carbons into the atmosphere is unmistakable – that the “dramatic pace” of atmospheric changes and consequences over the past 200 years since the industrial revolution are something science can verify the planet has not experienced in 650,000 years. As the presentation ended, a number of Skyline students mingled with the S-MSC sophomores and juniors for additional discussion – enabling this photo op.
