Cookbooks Board 1/5

Based on the Penguin Design Award this brief was to re-design the covers of ‘modern classic’ cookbooks. The books were chosen by researching into bestselling and most popular cookbooks on websites such as Amazon and Waterstones. The current range produced consists of five cookbooks but the original proposed range had 10 books, it could also be a continuous range where a new book is released into the range each month. The brief was illustration based, looking at how to apply illustration to a range of products. The range here consists of hardback books, notebooks, bookmarks, postcards and tote bags, they work as a set and also as individual products. The range has been proposed to be sold instore and online in Waterstones stores but they would also be sold from the online Penguin store.

Cookbooks Board 2/5

These are the illustrations that were designed for the cookbook range, all the illustrations were hand rendered and coloured with watercolour paints. Each part of the patterned illustrations were drawn individually and then the patterns were created on Illustrator. The illustrations for each book are relevant to the content and subject matter of the book.

Cookbooks Board 3/5

These are the illustrations in context on the dust jackets of the cookbooks. The watercolour illustrations have been turned into a pattern as seen on the previous board and the text added over the top. The dust jackets have been printed on off white sugar paper and wrapped around hardback books. The Penguin logo has been printed onto the spine and also on the backs of the books. The backs of the books have been kept simple with just the barcode and ISBN number and Penguin logo printed on them. The other information would be printed on the book itself, under the dust jacket. The books in the range do far include, The River Cottage Cookbook-Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, Plenty-Yotam Ottenlengi, The Fat Duck Cookbook- Heston Blumenthal, Seafood- Rick Stein and Mary Berry’s Baking Bible.

Cookbooks Board 4/5

These products are all part of the extended range that would be sold along side the cookbooks. 1 The tote bags would be sold with the books, or possibly given away free if customers were to purchase over a certain number of the books. The pattern is printed onto the organic cotton tote bag on one side and would be avalible with the different patterns from each of the cookbooks.

2 The bookmarks are printed on white bulky newspaper to stand out against the off white of the sugar paper dust jackets. There is a bookmark for each book and they would be given away free with each purchase of the book, so would be used as oart of the promotion of the range.

3 These are A5 notebooks, the covers are also printed on off white sugar paper, and there is one for each of the cookbooks. The idea would be to purchase one with the cookbook and use it to make your own notes when working with the recipes from the books themselves. They would be sold indiviually but also as a set of 5. 4 The postcards, like the bookmarks are printed on double sided white bulky newsprint. They would be sold as a set of 5 with one for each of the cookbooks.
