he all-new 2014 Range Rover Sport has been designed to capture the distinctive DNA of its predecessor, but with a bold evolution that places it firmly at the heart of the three-model Range Rover portfolio between the Range Rover and the Range Rover Evoque. The Range Rover Sport occupies a unique position within its segment, and the new model builds on those core strengths with a design that confirms its status as the definitive premium sports SUV. Though it was developed alongside the 2013 Range Rover and shares some commonality with its sister vehicle, the all-new Range Rover Sport contains 75 percent unique parts content. “The new Range Rover Sport is a real head turner. It’s a beautifully proportioned and highly sophisticated vehicle design. Its DNA is clear and it’s got ‘drive me’ written all over it.” Gerry McGovern, Design Director & Chief Creative Officer, Land Rover BOLD AND PROGRESSIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN The dynamic new Range Rover Sport has a bold and progressive exterior design, while retaining the brand’s signature clamshell hood, ‘floating’ roof and side fender vents. It is eight percent more aerodynamic than the previous model, achieving a drag figure of Cd 0.34. Just 2.5 inches longer than its predecessor, at 191 inches, the 2014 Range Rover Sport is shorter than other sevenseat SUVs and many mid-sized sedans, bringing greater maneuverability and ease of parking. Yet, a wheelbase that’s longer by 7 inches yields greater room and improved access for rear passengers. The new Range Rover Sport is 5.9 inches shorter and 2.17 inches lower than the new 2013 Range Rover on which it is based and weighs 99 pounds less when comparably equipped.

“THE ALL-NEW RANGE ROVER SPORT ADDS ANOTHER EXCITING ELEMENT TO OUR RANGE ROVER PRODUCT PORTFOLIO. ITS DESIGN GIVES IT A CLEAR INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY, WHILE REMAINING AN UNMISTAKEABLE PART OF THE RANGE ROVER BLOODLINE.” GERRY McGOVERN DESIGN DIRECTOR & CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER, LAND ROVER

GERRY McGOVERN LAND ROVER’S DESIGN DIRECTOR ON THE SECRET OF THE BRAND’S ‘DNA’

The new Sport is clearly part of the new Range Rover family. What was your approach to its design and would you describe it as an evolution or a revolution? I’d categorically call the new car a revolutionary design. It moves the Sport’s design ethos on in every area and also incorporates a lot of the contemporary design cues and ‘DNA’ of the award-winning cars we have launched recently like the Evoque and all-new Range Rover. Whenever we replace an existing model we always ask whether it should be an evolutionary or revolutionary process – and we ask our customers what they want too. With the Range Rover Sport the answer was clear – they wanted it to be more relevant to their lifestyles, it needed to have a unique personality, it needed to be more sophisticated and desirable but at the same time more sustainable. It was about getting the balance right and ensuring we weren’t harnessed by the old model. The Evoque and all-new Range Rover have been lauded for their design. Is there a secret to creating a car that sits in the SUV market and yet is so obviously from the Range Rover family? Great design is the gateway to consumer desirability and what gives you great design is optimised volume and proportion. That means the length of the body relevant to the length of the cabin, the glass to body ratio, the

position of the wheels and the overhangs you have – they are all critical to the success of the design and yet they are not givens. Optimised proportion can only come about if you have optimised engineering and that means the fundamental architecture of the vehicle has to be right. We work incredibly closely with our engineers to create an architecture that allows us to get those minimal overhangs, fast screen angles and perfect wheel placement. The result is a platform that we can build a car around that has zero compromise in terms of design, manufacturing and performance.

GERRY McGOVERN DESIGN DIRECTOR & CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER, LAND ROVER

How would you describe the new Range Rover Sport?

In one word: dramatic. To create that drama, power and athleticism we knew we had to create a car that would do more than just turn heads. Many cars come and go and you wouldn’t even notice them if they drove right past you. The Range Rover Sport will make you walk into a lamppost! Why is it so striking? Because of its profile, the lines and surface of the vehicle. They all combine to incredible effect and there is no doubt about the dramatic stance and attitude of the car. It’s muscular but it’s not overtly

01

DESIGN & LIFEST YLE T H E A L L- N E W R A N G E R O V E R S P O RT

muscular. It’s dynamic, it’s got a fast screen angle that connects with the front of the wheel which gives what we call in the design trade the “paw print” – it’s like a lion’s foot – and it makes the car feel really grounded. Then there is the jewel-like quality of the detailing and finish that makes it look very premium and luxurious. It sounds like a wide range of design disciplines are required to produce a car that leads its segment. How do you structure your design teams and orchestrate them to come up with such a polished result? Design is an inherently collaborative exercise. It is about a group of people coming together – craftsmen and women from every discipline – and is never down to just one person. My teams have worked for years in their specific fields and it shows. They are people who know their craft and have years of experience. You don’t learn to design in five minutes and you certainly can’t make something as desirable as the new Range Rover Sport without knowing what you are doing. Every member of the team had a part to play whether big or small, but all equally important.

You talk about Range Rover DNA when you describe your design philosophy for the marque. Can you explain exactly what that means? There are certain design cues on our cars that belong to our brand: the floating roof, the continuous beltline, the clamshell bonnet, the short overhangs, the sophisticated surfaces. Inside the cabin those design cues continue: the strong horizontal architectural beam that is intersected by the vertically sloping dashboard. That’s the Range Rover DNA. What makes you particularly proud when you look at the finished product? What I love about this car is the fact that it sits beautifully in this family of new Range Rovers. It’s right in between its two siblings – the Range Rover Evoque and the all-new Range Rover – but it has its own unique personality. When you see it on the road it’s a real head-turner. It’s a beautifully proportioned and highly sophisticated vehicle design. It’s planted and purposeful. The new car has been transformed in terms of its modernity. It’s a new Range Rover Sport for a new generation, for a new era. It’s got longevity. And of course you can’t ignore its road presence. It’s immensely desirable, there’s really nothing else like it. It’s got “drive me” written all over it.

“Coupled with state-of-the-art technologies such as Adaptive Dynamics computer-controlled dampers, the Range Rover Sport is not only supremely capable in any conditions but it is – and this is the really important bit – incredibly fun to drive! It is involving and responds to every single input you make. You just can’t take that smile off your face! It really asks you to push it to its limits.” Nick Rogers, Vehicle Line Director, Range Rover ALUMINUM SUSPENSION Underpinning the enhanced driving capability of the new Range Rover Sport is a new fully independent aluminum suspension that is double isolated, with wide-spaced double-wishbones at the front and a multi-link layout at the rear. The system delivers impressive wheel travel – with 10.2 inches of movement at the front and 10.7 inches at the rear – to provide exceptional wheel articulation (21.5 inches, compared to typical competitors’ offering of less than 17.7 inches). The next-generation four-corner air suspension now offers variable ride height with two off-road settings: 1.4-in. lift for standard use and a 2.6-in. lift for off-road use (rather than a single 2.2-in. lift position on the previous model). This system also provides an automatic extension (triggered by sensors) and a manually selected extension, which both raise the Range Rover Sport by an additional 1.4-in. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES ENHANCE DRIVING DYNAMICS A key element of the vehicle’s agile and engaging character is the all-new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system that features variable-ratio speed-sensitive power assistance. Suspension performance is enhanced by the use of advanced chassis and vehicle technologies to optimize vehicle dynamics. More powerful models are equipped with a dedicated Dynamic mode in the Terrain Response® 2 system,* providing a more sporting bias during enthusiastic on-road driving, with a firmer ride, tighter body control, reduced roll and more responsive steering. To deliver the ultimate sporting driving experience, Dynamic mode is specified in combination with a number of key technologies. Significantly reducing the degree of body lean during cornering, Dynamic Response transforms both vehicle handling and occupant comfort.

MIKE CROSS LAND ROVER’S CHIEF ENGINEER FOR VEHICLE INTEGRITY ON HOW TO CREATE A RANGE ROVER ALL-ROUNDER

What particular aspects of the new Range Rover Sport’s dynamic capability, performance and handling make it the best car in its class? I think the new Range Rover Sport really is the best car in its segment, and that’s mainly down to its balance. It has very agile handling but has great ride comfort and refinement as well. It’s a unique selling point for a car of this size. You you can take the kids to school in it, take it off-road and drive it on a racing circuit with equal aplomb. Many will be surprised at how well this car performs on a track. It’s precise, it’s adjustable and is much faster than the previous model. The light weight, the stiffness and the precision really come through. For such a large car you can hit every apex on a race track with ease as the turn-in is immediate. It feels very poised, light, composed and much smaller than its actual size at speed. And it’s also got an amazing amount of grip for an SUV.

MIKE CROSS

The new Range Rover Sport is the first vehicle in its class to adopt the advanced all-aluminum body structure introduced with last year’s Range Rover. What difference does the lighter weight of the new car make to its on-road dynamics?

The new lightweight aluminum body of this car is 300kgs (661 lbs) lighter than the body and chassis frame of the old car. This makes it more responsive and a lot faster. The weight loss over the previous car has madeCHIEF the whole ENGINEER, process of engineering a very agile SUV a whole lot easier. VEHICLE INTEGRIT Y The lighter weight means that the car can accelerate, brake and change direction much more quickly. The stiffness gives us a higher amount of precision, which greatly improves handling and steering. The proof is evident in the performance figures – the supercharged V8 version of this new Range Rover Sport will do 0-60mph in five seconds. What would you say is the main dynamic difference between the new Range Rover Sport and it predecessor? The new Range Rover Sport’s breadth of capability is greater, its capacity is greater. It’s much more dynamic, much more capable and much more agile from a driver’s perspective than its predecessor. The new car has sports car DNA running through it as many of the team who worked on it have also worked on the new Jaguar F-TYPE. The balance that sports cars have, in terms of their response, and the way in which all the attributes work together, has been carried into the new Sport. The steering is immediate, precise and connected and that applies to all the other systems on the car – the way the brakes feel, the way the throttle feels, the way the gearbox is calibrated, everything’s nicely balanced and responsive.

01≥ TRANSMISSION

The new Sport benefits from an advanced ZF eight-speed transmission, which can be operated in full automatic mode, or manually shifted via the center-console mounted shifter or steering wheel mounted paddles, putting control at your fingertips.

This car benefits from a host of new driving technologies, which make the actual driving experience a very exciting proposition. You’ve truly put the ‘sport’ into the Range Rover Sport. How has that been achieved? Well, obviously the lighter weight has been a considerable factor in making the car a lot sportier, but as far as in-car technology is concerned the new Range Rover Sport has an advanced eight-speed transmission, which allows the driver to tailor the transmission either to the driving conditions or to his mood. The car can be fully automatic or the driver can select gears from the centre consolemounted shifter or from the steering wheel paddles. Again, the team that developed this transmission brought a lot of experience from working on the Jaguar F-TYPE and applied it to this car. Also, there’s the optional Dynamic mode, which enthusiastic drivers will love. It delivers a noteable reduction in body roll, the dampers are tightened, gear changes are faster, steering efforts are changed and the throttle mapping is adjusted. Essentially the driving characteristics change at the push of a button and on the right road, and in the right circumstances, the car transforms into a more immediate, more responsive sports SUV.

“THE NEW RANGE ROVER SPORT IS A FANTASTIC CAR TO DRIVE ON A DEMANDING ROAD. THE STEERING HAS VERY PRECISE TURN-IN. You’ve spent a lot of time driving the Range Rover Sport during its development; tell us what it’s like being behind the wheel. The new Range Rover Sport is a fantastic car to drive on a demanding road. The steering has very precise turn-in. The car corners very flat, and it has a lot of grip and capacity, so it will easily cope with the most challenging stretches of Tarmac. The design team have worked hard to create a ‘command-feel’ driving environment that really cossets you when you’re behind the wheel, and we’ve worked very hard in our capacity as engineers to make sure that the actual drive complements that feeling of control you get when you’re sitting in the driving seat. I think we’ve achieved that. The new 2014 Range Rover Sport is a huge step forward. It’s agile, poised and fast, without any compromise having been made to comfort or refinement.

“FROM THE VERY FIRST MOMENT YOU CLIMB ABOARD IT IS IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS THAT THE RANGE ROVER SPORT HAS SEEN MARKED IMPROVEMENTS ACROSS EVERY MEASURE. NICK ROGERS LAND ROVER’S TECHNICAL CHIEF TALKS LIGHT WEIGHT AND HIGH TECH

How much of a step change will the new Range Rover Sport be compared to the first-generation model? In what areas have you made the most significant gains and how have you achieved them? It’s a phrase that manufacturers like to use but in our case it is true – the new Range Rover Sport is completely new from the ground up. It is about 800 lbs. lighter thanks to the bespoke technologies that Land Rover uses during the design, engineering and production phase to deliver a lightweight aluminum bodyshell. It is made through an advanced bonding and riveting process that has been inspired and then evolved from aerospace technologies. And in addition to this we have maximised and focused on every single aspect of the car to improve its reliability, durability, strength and quality. How do those improvements show themselves from a driver’s perspective? What gains would you notice from behind the wheel? That’s one of the great things about the new Sport – from the very first moment you climb aboard it is immediately obvious that this car has got even better across every measure. It’s apparent from the outset how much weight we’ve removed and that lends a really special character to the car in terms of its incredible dynamics. This weight loss transforms the way the car corners, stops, accelerates and rides.

It’s not just in the bodyshell that you’ve used the latest alloys to save weight and improve dynamics. Can you explain in what other areas you’ve deployed aluminum to such good effect?

NICK ROGERS

Not only do we have the strongest, stiffest Range Rover chassis ever, we’ve got an all-new aluminum suspension system. Using advanced alloys to form elements such as wishbones and uprights means we can reduce the mass in all the areas where weight can cause issues for our suspension and dynamics engineers. Coupled with state-of-the-art technologies such as Adaptive Dynamics VEHICLE LINE DIRECTOR, computer-controlled dampers, the new Range Rover Sport RANGE ROVER is not only supremely capable in any condition but it is – and this is the really important bit – incredibly fun to drive! It is involving and responds to every single input you make. You just can’t take that smile off your face! It really asks you to push it to its limits.

It sounds like this is a ‘no-compromise’ drivers car. Does that mean you have had to sacrifice other areas such as comfort or refinement to give it its sporting nature? Not in the slightest. We simply wouldn’t have engineered a car that didn’t have the core DNA of every Land Rover product – the ability to go anywhere and to be able to do so in real comfort. The truth is our skills and expertise within chassis set-up, suspension and so on are as good as anybodies’ and that means we really can create cars with an incredibly broad envelope. Its ability to travel great distances at high speeds is as good as the all-new 2013 Range Rover – it is effortless. But on those shorter journeys, when you want to have a bit of fun I guarantee you will. On a twisty country lane it has features such as two-channel Active Roll Control that keeps it completely flat and the response from the new electronic power steering is absolutely perfect, so you can control it very precisely thanks to that great feedback. How hard have you applied the sporting philosophy to the cabin and interior features? Is it a radical departure from the previous car? Well it’s a quantum leap forwards, that’s for sure. It is undeniably sporting in its overall design – the seats, for example, are brilliantly supportive and also look pretty cool too. But it is also understated in many ways. We’ve worked really hard to ensure that the waistline of the car – the line where the body hits the cabin glass – has been maximised to give that classic Range Rover command driving feel but still sends subtle sporting cues to the occupants and passers-by. We’ve put a slightly smaller steering wheel in the car, for example, so it allows you to make deliberate inputs at higher speeds. It is simply a brilliantly wellrounded package.

Tell us about some of the other technologies that we’d find under the skin of the new Range Rover Sport. It must be a real challenge to deliver a car that has the poise of a Range Rover but the excitement of a Sport? Where do I start? The new Sport is literally packed full of features that are perfectly matched to the chassis and suspension to give it such a unique ability in its class. For example, we use an electronic active rear differential which can be tuned instantly, at any speed, to ensure maximum traction goes to all wheels. In an off-road situation it is constantly working within the latest Terrain Response® 2 system to deliver maximum traction and zero slip to all four corners. On-road it works alongside the Active Roll Control system and the Sport’s unique Dynamic mode to deliver a heightened response for the ultimate, on-limit driving experience. Put simply it is the most enthralling and exhilarating car we’ve ever created.

MIKE BELL DIRECTOR, CONNECTED CAR TECHNOLOGIES The world of the internet and the smartphone is ever more important in our lives. How have you looked to integrate so-called ‘connectivity’ features within the new Range Rover Sport? There’s no doubt that the increase in coverage of highdata telephone and data networks has transformed our lives and rightly customers are looking to us to make the transfer of such features into their cars as seamless as possible. The new Range Rover Sport ticks all the right boxes for the latest connectivity systems and means that wherever you are on the go it will remain possible to stay in touch with work, family and the wider world thanks to features like 3G WiFi Hotspot and the Land Rover Smart App. Connectivity means more than just a link to the internet, doesn’t it? How can you ensure people are safer too? Features like the new optional InTouch system mean people are within touch of roadside assistance or the emergency services at the press of a button. We all know that feeling when you need to make an urgent call and realise you have left your phone at home. InTouch removes that problem and allows you to summon help without a phone or SIM card. It’s intelligent, too: automatically calling for emergency help if it detects a serious accident or airbag deployment. It even sends a GPS location in the event that you are unable to tell an operator where you are. It brings peace of mind and convenience.

T

he all-new Range Rover Sport has been engineered with the latest developments in customer-focused technologies to enhance comfort and confidence behind the wheel, from premium interior features to advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies. OPTIONAL DRIVER ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGIES The new model introduces an innovative digital camera system that supports three driver assistance features to help deliver improved driver awareness. Mounted next to the rear view mirror, the forward facing camera captures a view of the road ahead, which is analyzed by a sophisticated onboard computer. Lane Departure Warning* is designed to warn the driver via a vibration in the steering wheel if an unintentional drift out of the lane begins. If the vehicle drifts from the center of the lane, and the system does not detect an obvious lane-change maneuver or use of the signals, the vibration alert is triggered. This is reinforced by a notification in the instrument cluster. The system is deactivated below 37 mph, so it does not interfere in urban driving conditions. The driver can adjust the system’s sensitivity and the alert intensity, or turn the system off. Traffic Sign Recognition* uses the camera to identify traffic signs on either side of the road and on bridges, providing the driver with information about the latest detected traffic regulations via the instrument cluster display. To indicate how recent the information is, the displayed sign fades away in a series of steps as the distance increases from the location of the sign. Automatic High Beam Assist* switches the headlamps automatically between high and dipped beam, helping to maximize visibility and avoid the distraction of switching the lamps manually. The system identifies the headlamps or taillights of other vehicles so that dipped beam can be activated when required. * These systems are not a substitute for driving safely with due care and attention and will not function under all circumstances, speeds, weather and road conditions, etc. Driver should not assume that these systems will correct errors of judgment in driving. Please consult the owner’s manual or your local authorized Land Rover Retailer for more details.

Flank Guard* helps alert the driver to potential impacts on the sides of the vehicle during tight maneuvers such as in multistorey parking structures, where there can be a higher risk of colliding with pillars, barriers or other vehicles. The new feature is enabled by the addition of extra distance sensors on the vehicle (now six front and rear, instead of four), which provide wider coverage around the vehicle than conventional park distance sensors. The driver is warned of potential impacts by audible beeps, while the central instrument cluster display provides a graphical image indicating the proximity of objects by displaying distance bars. Using information on the vehicle’s steering angle and trajectory, the system only warns when there is a threat of impact. An optional, enhanced Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)* system operates even when the vehicle is travelling slowly or is stationary. Adding to the standard ACC functionality, which maintains a pre-set time gap to the vehicle in front, the new Queue Assist feature allows the vehicle to come to a stop when it reaches a traffic jam. When the car in front moves, the driver can resume ACC operation by briefly touching the accelerator. The vehicle then maintains the selected time gap to the vehicle ahead, and can accelerate back up to the pre-set cruising speed. Range Rover Sport drivers can also specify advanced new technologies to alert them to nearby vehicles that could create

a hazard. Blind Spot Monitoring* uses side-mounted radar sensors to survey potential blind spots at either side of the vehicle, alerting the driver when vehicles are detected within these areas. The system is optimized to work at lower speeds commonly encountered in urban conditions or on congested highways. It is now combined with Closing Vehicle Sensing,* a new feature that extends the function of the system by scanning a zone much further behind the vehicle, to detect vehicles that are closing quickly from behind and that could cause a threat during a lane change maneuver. Drivers are alerted by a rapid flashing of the Blind Spot warning light in the exterior mirror. Another new function, Reverse Traffic Detection,* uses sensors in the rear of the vehicle to warn about potential collisions during reversing maneuvers, such as reversing out of a parking space. The system is active when reverse gear is selected and can detect a vehicle approaching from either side, alerting the driver to a potential collision. Other driver assistance technologies that help to reduce driver stress include the Adjustable Speed Limiter Device,* which enables the driver to set a personal maximum speed preference, the latest Surround Camera System* incorporating T-Junction view, trailer reverse park guidance and trailer hitch guidance, and Adaptive Xenon headlamps.

The new Range Rover Sport’s Terrain ResponseŽ 2 system automatically analyses the current driving conditions and road surface and then chooses the most suitable Terrain Response program, ensuring the vehicles is set up for optimum traction.

ELECTRIC POWER-ASSISTED STEERING WITH ADVANCED PARK ASSIST FUNCTIONS* The new electric power-assisted steering in the Range Rover Sport also enables customers to benefit from a range of advanced Park Assist features, including:

Wi

Fi

Is available in a Range Rover Sport for the first time thanks to the new optional WiFi hotspot feature.

Park Assist – which helps to identify a suitable parallel parking space, and then automatically steers the vehicle into place

Park Exit – which helps drivers exit tight parallel parking spaces, by automatically steering the vehicle back into the road

Perpendicular Park – which extends the function of the system to help the driver to reverse into perpendicular spaces, using sensors to help identify a suitable space where the vehicle can be parked and the doors on each side opened safely

Each of the functions provides the driver with clear instructions via the cluster display, and uses the Park Distance Controls, Flank Guard and camera systems (where fitted) to help warn the driver of objects in close proximity during the maneuver.
