Fowlerville School Report By Superintendent, Wayne Roedel

Even though Fowlerville is a safe place to live and attend school, it is prudent to re-evaluate our safety protocols for the various crisis events that may take place at school or in the surrounding community. These events can include severe weather like tornados, Âżre, or an intruder entering one of our buildings. As a point of information, please know that school ofÂżcials have been meeting for the past two years with the other school ofÂżcials in our county as well as law enforcement, Âżre and other emergency response personnel who may be dispatched to the scene in the event of an emergency. When the schools in the county have similar responses and use similar terminology, emergency response crews will be able to more efÂżciently support the schools in a crisis response. In our effort to make our schools as safe as possible, we have been practicing some of the many drills that we are required to practice by law. Please be aware that we are practicing these drills and your children may come home to let you know that they practiced a Âżre, tornado or lockdown drill.

SYNOPSIS PROPOSED IOSCO TOWNSHIP BOARD REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OCTOBER 16TH, 2014 Supervisor Miller called the meeting to order, with the Pledge of Allegiance, at 8:00 PM. Clerk Delmerico, Treasurer Michaud, and Trustees Parker and DeGroot present. Also in attendance was the Zoning Administrator, Mr. Davison, along with Ms. L. Myers, Mr. G. Munsell, and Mr. S. Spalding all of whom are Township residents. Motion to approve the Agenda. Call to the Public: The Public was heard from. Motion to adopt the Regular Meeting Minutes 9-18-2014; as corrected. Motion to approve the Special Board Meeting Minutes, as corrected, of 9-25-2014. Motion to approve the Election Commission Meeting Minutes of 10-11-2014. Heard the Treasurer’s report. Motion to pay $49,507.87 in Township bills. There was no Fire Authority report this month. Heard the Planning Commission report. Motions to re-appointment Wade Spalding, to the Township Planning Commission, for a 3 year term ending September 2017 and to re-appointment Duane Herbert, to the Township Planning Commission, for a 3 year term ending November 2017. Heard the Zoning Administrator’s report. Discussed the Township Internet Proposal and then passed a Motion to form a Internet Research Committee of Township residents to study various solutions to bring high speed and affordable internet service to the Township. There was no response to the 2nd Call to the Public. Motion to Adjourn at 9:45 PM. Dan Delmerico Township Clerk 11-16-2014

Based on the county-wide panel’s recommendations, there have been some minor adjustments to our lockdown procedure but not many within our other safety responses. The goal, based on the most recent research on school safety, is to develop a plan that gives the teacher more options of what to do in the event that we enter into a lockdown. Currently, our primary response is to lock the door, turn out the lights and get all people out of the line of sight of the door. We have put a renewed emphasis on barricading the door, hiding within interior rooms within the classroom or even exiting windows or doors and retreating to pre-determined locations in other buildings for safety. According to the Michigan State Police and other law enforcement of¿cials, locking ourselves securely in a brick and mortar classroom is still the safest place to be during an event, however, they also realize that there may be secondary options that make sense. We will train staff and students to think about the best response to a lockdown and give them the autonomy to make the best decisions possible within a lockdown event. We can never be too prepared. Better practice makes for better performance in the unlikely event that a true lockdown is necessary. As I noted earlier, I believe Fowlerville to be a safe place to live and go to school. This safe feeling shouldn’t get in the way of us practicing our safety response to the different crises we may encounter. I hope your children feel a sense of relief as they practice these drills and it is my hope that you can reinforce with your children the need to practice seriously, but at the same time reinforce with them that their school and community are safe.

Student of the Week: Autumn Barbour By Rachael Peckens This week’s Student of the Week is freshman Autumn Barbour. Autumn is the daughter of Jim and Anji Barbour, sister to Austin Barbour, and beloved dog Lucky. Currently she is taking Algebra I, Freshman Lit. and Comp., Earth Science, Spanish II, American History, and Biology. Biology is Autumn’s favorite class this year. She says her love of science stemmed from her 8th grade teacher Mr. Jolin, who is still her favorite teacher as well. Her passion for science has led her to want to attend college following high school to become a biochemist. After her busy schedule at school, Autumn loves to spend her time playing volleyball. She says, “Volleyball is my life, day and night!â€? Playing varsity volleyball at FHS is what she looks forward to the most, along with receiving her driver’s license. Her favorite memory with friends was actually during a volleyball team bonding night. Apart from volleyball and school, Autumn enjoys going up north with her family to their cabin where she likes to four-wheel, snowmobile, hunt, and sit around the campÂżre. As she listed her favorites, they include: movie actor Adam Sandler, country music, Animal Planet, the novel Peaches by Jodi Anderson, and, of course, volleyball. Autumn was nominated by her freshman teachers. Mrs. Mangan stated, “In addition to being a great and conscientious students, Autumn is such a wonderfully positive person. She is polite, respectful, and kind to all of her classmates. Mrs. Collins stated, “I don’t have her in class but worked with her on Ă€oat building and she was a great worker! She also volunteers for our class to run the concessions at many of the JH athletic events despite the fact that she is in a fall sport (volleyball) herself. NICE girl!â€? Mrs. Connor commented, “She always gives full participation and is very eager to learn, willing to ask questions, and volunteer answers in class. Hard worker for sure!â€? Being nominated as student of the week came as a surprise and left Autumn feeling “very honored and special.â€? A good friend of hers, Olivia Holmes, stated, “Autumn is a great friend and always makes me laugh!â€? Congratulations Autumn!

Michigan Senate Report By Joe Hune, 22nd District

New licensing requirements for hunters With hunting season upon us, there have been a few licensing changes within the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that I would like to remind you about, starting with the new base license. The new licensing structure was approved by the Legislature in Public Act 108 of 2013 and took effect March 1 of this year. +owever, with ¿rearm deer season fast approaching, it is possible you may ¿eld some Tuestions regarding the new base license. The new structure reTuires the purchase of a base license ($11 for residents and $5 for senior residents), which allows for small game hunting and the option to purchase other license as needed for deer, turkey, waterfowl, etc. Historically, the state’s hunters began their hunting pastimes with small game and then moved to larger species. The inclusion of small game hunting encourages hunters to continue hunting small game and to pass the practice on to future generations. The base license dollars will be used to enhance and expand hunting opportunities in Michigan. A base license however is not needed to purchase a ¿shing license. I work a considerable amount with the DNR and can assure you that they are committed to delivering the best hunting and trapping opportunities it can afford with the license revenue hunters and trappers provide and the base license assists with that funding. With additional funding, the DNR will expand efforts to do more for hunters and the wildlife of Michigan by creating world-class recreational opportunities in Michigan. Rozlin Opolka is November “Artist of the Month at Fowlerville High

Motorcycles P lus Used Harleys, Parts & Service

Congratulations to Rozlin Opolka for Artist of the Month of November. Rozlin is a sophomore at Fowlerville High School and has been highly active in the Arts her entire life. She started creating art when she was very little. Her mother was even painting and creating while she was pregnant for Rozlin. She comes from a very creative family. Her mom and grandmother are artists too! She has been active in the Art Club, Tech Crew, Theater and a soccer goalie. She is currently the stage manager this year. As to her plans for the future, she plans a double majoring in Art and Theater with a minor in theater makeup. In her painting, she would like you to notice... The piece titled “Censorshipâ€? reĂ€ects my opinion of art censorship. Censored art is not a bad thing;in some circumstances it is okay to censor art for small children or other parties. However, I am in Âżrm belief that art should not be censored. Students should be able to create art around the non-promiscuous human form. Censorship can ruin an art piece. Much like your eye is drawn to the censorship tape on my piece. Distracting you from the real art. Humans are humans. We all have similar bodies with similar parts. Why should we censor nature?

Livingston Centre Historical Committee plans winter activities

7he Livingston Centre +istorical Committee met 1ov. to evaluate the activities of this past year and set goals for the winter season. During these months the committee assesses the needs of the historic Village and develops a plan for next year. $ report on recent activities and on-going concerns was presented on 1ov. 5 to the Fowlerville $gricultural Society the parent organi]ation overseeing Livingston Centre operations. The members of the committee continue to develop a Master 3lan for restoration and maintenance. Recently preliminary estimates were obtained for needed basic renovation costs and fundraising efforts are being coordinated. These preliminary estimates are needed as members apply for grant money from philanthropic and state organi]ations. Members can be found at our local “Christmas in the ‘Ville´ event on Dec. beginning at 00 p.m. selling live evergreen swags and other holiday items. $rea residents are asked to help this effort: if you have live evergreens any other appropriate dried foliage or wired holiday ribbon please consider donating it to the +istoric Committee. 3lease call 3resident Marge Carlon at 51 - 1 before 1ov. . $rrangements can be made for delivery or pick-up. The committee continues to grow welcoming insight and suggestions from new members. If you have an interest in preserving and sharing the history of Livingston County please consider attending the next meeting at :00 p.m.; Thursday Dec. at the Fair OfÂżce. Immediate concerns include a revision of the rental agreement for the historic buildings and event planning for next summer. The buildings continue to be available to the community for rental. The model train display is complete and available for groups to visit and learn about the history of this versatile and long used method of transportation. In addition to the Coughran School and highest in demand for use is our historic Green church: a -une wedding is already planned and now is the time to consider view then secure a place on the calendar for your special event.

By Hayley Wagner Taylor Leigh Chase will be graduating in the spring of 2015, after thirteen impressive years at Webberville Community Schools. Chase is the daughter of Mike and Teresa Chase. She has attended Webberville since preschool. Chase is a very driven student, which will take her far in her further endeavors. Chase has made a major impact on Webberville through all of the activities she has participated in. She has been a part of sideline cheer for three years, competitive cheer for three years, softball for four years, and basketball for two years. Along with sports she does many extracurricular activities including NHS for three years, Project ROOTS for three years, prom committee for one year, journalism for two years, and musical theater for four years. During her time at Webberville High School, Chase has had multiple roles, such as: vice president of NHS and coeditor-in-chief of the journalism program. She has also been involved in numerous musicals a few of which are: White Christmas and The Music Man. “Taylor has a strong stage presence and wonderful sense of comedic timing, said Michael Wheaton, musical theater teacher, “I will miss her improvisations in class where she excels at displaying her sense of humor and creativity. Chase is also very involved in athletics. One of her favorite sports is competitive cheer. “Taylor brings lots of positive energy, hard work and dedication to the team, said competitive cheer coach, Janet Wilson, “I could ask her to do anything, and whether or not she wants to do it, she is willing to. Over the years, Chase has evolved into a wonderful student. “Taylor’s integrity sets an example for her peers, said English teacher, Katie Pingle, “Her natural leadership skills really shine through in her contributions to the class and her excitement towards her ideas for projects. After graduating from Webberville, Chase plans to attend either Eastern Michigan University or Michigan State University for a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She also plans to attend graduate school for a master’s degree in Criminology. “My advice for underclassmen is to make the most of high school and try to have as much fun as you can, said Chase. She is excited about moving on to new experiences, but looks forward to making as many memories as possible during the remainder of her senior year. Chase is going to miss all of the people who have made an impact on her life while she has been at Webberville. “Taylor Chase is one of the funniest people I know. She’s an incredible friend that I can always count on and an altogether incredible person, said Chase’s best friend and fellow senior, Emily Judd. “She is so strong and so helpful; I don’t know what I would do without her. Taylor is my best friend. There is no doubt in my mind that she is going to go places no one has ever gone before and change the world for the better.

Joey Quigley and Mitchell Stobierski battled on the boards for Fowlerville and pulled down some key rebounds for the team. Shane Sibo, Nick Reason and Alec Johnson also forced some turnovers by playing solid defense for the team. *** Yearbooks The Yearbook is being created and are now available for purchase. PEP ASSEMBLY--The 2014 Fowlerville Junior High Pep Assembly was a HUGE success! All students, staff, and teachers had fun showing school spirit! The performance by special guest Nicholas Johnson was amazing! He sang the National Anthem to kick off the assembly. Nicholas is a wonderful 11 year old with FG Syndrome, his brother attends Fowlerville Junior High. Thank you to the Johnson family for helping us to make this work! Thank you to Mr. Jarvis for introducing all of the athletes and to the Fowlerville Junior High Band for playing. The assembly was enjoyed by all and an additional highlight was the Human Bowling event where many enjoyed watching teachers and staff being placed in a bowling ball and rolled at giant bowling pins. Thank you to all for the wonderful memories! Additional thanks to Dan Millar of Acme Party Works in Novi for the awesome game.

B\ Brian )riGGle Webberville School Superintendent , believe that the ne[t ¿ve years will see some of the greatest change in the history of education. New affordable technologies will change the way that content and instruction is delivered to students. In the past, education has been dominated by a model with a keeper of knowledge leading the classroom from the front of the room. Since there is such a vast storehouse of knowledge available to students at their ¿ngertips this model is changing. We are still trying to catch up to the change, and we have not entirely embraced it yet. So what does this mean for the traditional classroom? The keeper of knowledge in the front of the room will need to adapt to the new paradigm where the learner may have more current and up to date information and may be able to retrieve information that they do not possess. I do not believe that this makes the teacher obsolete; to the contrary I think it makes them more valuable in guiding the student learner in the process. Teaching the student how to retrieve, adapt, analyze and apply the information they learn. Teaching discernment is also a role for the teacher. A lot of information that is available is not helpful and can lead the student away from their intended outcome. Knowledge is good, but we also want the students to develop wisdom in using the information they learn. There are many opportunities out there to learn with the use of new technologies. Some students are able to learn by reading something online and can engage and stay motivated with an online text, while others students are not able to stay engaged with this type of limited format. A blended instruction tends to meet the needs of many students. One nice thing about some of the new technologies is that they allow for a lot of Àexibility in how and when a student engages with the content and instruction. Webberville High School has started a new journey this year with the implementation of a one to one program. Each high school student has been given an I-Pad to use for school work. The opportunity was made available through the

Whole School Technology Transformation Grant from the Michigan Department of Education that provided 14 schools (5000 students) with a one to one pilot opportunity. We have begun the implementation of our new one to one program and it will take us a year or more to get all of our current goals implemented with our I-Pad roll out. We are learning how to manage the I-Pads in the classroom so that they are an enrichment and not a disruption. Our goal is that we gain additional hours of instruction and time engaged with the content, and not lose educational time to gaming and unstructured surÂżng. We recognize that in Webberville we are just beginning to learn how to use this new tool and to better engage students in the learning process. This pilot will continue to challenge what we know as educators and will require us to consider how we have taught in the past, and how we must change to be effective in the future

Spend less time doing what you love. Sorry about that. Most people don’t understand. They look at a pile of wood and see a pile of work. You see the result of an honest day’s work. The Classic saves you time and means less work because it burns larger pieces of wood. There’s less splitting which significantly reduces the time you spend preparing the wood. We do apologize for that.

Good Reasons to Sell Your Home During the Holidays

People looking are more serious about buying. Serious buyers have fewer houses to choose from, less inventory available, so you have less competition. 3. Houses tend to “show betterâ€? with holiday decor. 4. After the holidays the supply of listings increases substantially which lowers the demand for your home. 5. Buyers can be more emotional during the holiday season. 6. Buyers have more time to look during the holidays, as opposed to normal work-schedules at non-seasonal times. 7. 0DQ\ ZLOO EX\ WR WDNH DGYDQWDJH RI \HDU HQG WD[ EHQHĂ€WV 8. Sue Spagnuolo of Fowlerville spent much of her legal career with Oakland Livingston Legal Aid, based in Howell (1986-2002) and then, after it was merged into a larger entity, with Legal Services of South Central Michigan (2003-2010). “This legal work was provided free to people in need of assistance who qualified,” she said. “It was civil work, mainly domestic cases. We also had the contract in Livingston County for assisting senior citizens. Again, this was a free service for those who did not have the financial means to obtain legal counsel.” While she’s now semi-retired, Sue said that she still offers legal advise to those who contact her and spends about 10 hours of week handling cases assigned to her by the juvenile court. For the past two years she’s been a member of the Fowlerville’s Planning Commission. That’s her second stint in local public service. She also served for four years on the Fowlerville Board of Education in the early 1980’s. Sue came to Fowlerville in 1958 two years after marrying Frank Spagnuolo. The couple had 10 children and, while raising them, she also took classes at Michigan State. In 1972 she earned her degree in Child Development and Education. “For the next five years I taught school in Fowlerville during the day and took law classes at the University of Detroit in the evening,” she recalled. “I got my degree and passed the bar in 1977.” Having reached that milestone, Sue decided a little adventure was in order. She took a job in Bolivia, teaching eighth graders. “I worked there for two years and eight of my kids came down and stayed with me,” she noted.
