By Cheryl Poch This coming Friday, October 16, is Dictionary Day. My question is this – does anyone even use a dictionary anymore or do we just rely on spell check to make corrections to our papers and texts? There are many other events taking place in the month of October. Here are just a few according to Chase’s Calendar of Events: Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month, American Cheese Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Church Library Month, National Roller Skating Month, National Popcorn Poppin’ Month, Spinach Lovers Month. There are many more events, these are just a few. Looking forward to 2016 – it will be a Leap Year! Also, Games of the XXXI Olympiad, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Now for a little update on some of our NEW non¿ction books. Look at these: Disgusting Science (J570) (New non-¿ction shelves) A book boys will enjoy reading – a revolting look at what makes things gross! He talks about everything from tummy trouble to maggots, worms, and parasites. For

example, The Science of Foul Food tells us that in Sweden there is a whiteÂżsh (typically Baltic herring) which is left to rot in barrels of salty water for up to three months, then canned. Inside the can, bacteria Âľripen’ the Âżsh, producing a sour Ă€avor and an awful smell. So awful, in fact, that most people retch upon opening the can. Interestingly, fermented Âżsh is also a key ingredient in British Worcestershire sauce. The Boy’s Book of Adventure (J7 0.1 ) (New non-Âżction shelves) this is a little guidebook for smart and resourceful boys. Outdoor activities and fun to do craft projects. This book will help you identify different kinds of rocks, read a map, build a camper’s backpack, tie sailor’s knots, and make a periscope and much more. So Terrible a Storm by Curt Brown. This is a tale of fury on Lake Superior. Brown traces the devastating intersection of nature’s fury and corporate greed. It was thanksgiving week 1905, and an epic storm threatened Lake Superior. The industry bosses wanted one last run before the shipping season ended; the bottom line depended on it. The tragedy that followed led to the building of Split Rock Lighthouse and went down in history as one of the worst shipping disasters in the nation. The explosive squall caught nearly thirty vessels. Tales of heartbreak and heroism, shipwreck and survival, played out across the Âżckle lake. Drawn from the accounts of witnesses and survivors – this is a must read! Till next week: “The most wasted of all days is the day when we have not laughed.â€?

The Salvation Army of Livingston County seeking bell ringers

The traditional sound of bells ringing at The Livingston County Salvation Army Red Kettles are as much a part of the holiday season as snow on Christ-mas, midnight church services, and presents under the tree. The Salvation Army Red Kettle season is one of The Salvation Army’s largest fundraising events that bring in almost a third of the Livingston County Corps annual budget. Money raised during the campaign helps the Army serve over 7,000 persons in need each year in Livingston County through a wide array of programs including mentoring and education for kids, shelter for the homeless, energy assistance for the elderly and food for the hungry. However as many know, it takes an army to make that happen. With the 2015 Christmas goal set at $378,000 The Salvation Army of Livingston County is getting a jump on the season by opening up the bell ringing website, RegistertoRing.com, on October 9. Individuals, organizations, families, and corporations will be able to schedule a date in advance and plan the rest of their holiday season around bell ringing! “Traditionally the website is not open for individuals and organization to sign up until after November 1, however, to meet our goal we will need to ill all of our kettle sites this year, said April Dertian, Development Director. “By opening our site early, we are encouraging organizations, businesses, families and individuals to save a date, in hopes to ill all sites and ring loudly all season long In addition to volunteer bell ringers The Salvation

Janet Hines, of Gregory, MI, age 42, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on September 30, 2015. She was born in Howell, Michigan on March 26, 1973, the daughter of John H. and Rebekah M. (Wagner) Rhodes. On May 7, 1994 she married Brandan Hines, and he survives. Janet loved people and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was always smiling and was an amateur ventriloquist. She was a real champion as she battled ovarian cancer for many years. Her slogan was ÂłNo one Âżghts alone.´ Most of all she was a wonderful wife and loving mother, daughter, and sister. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Zac, John and Lydia; parents: John and Becky Rhodes, inlaws: Dan and Andrea Hines; maternal grandfather: Floyd Wagner; a brother: Jim (Jenny) Rhodes: and a sister-in-law: Maria Usher; also many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Rhodes, Jr. Visitation will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Webberville on Friday, October 16, 2015 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church. Private burial will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ovarian Cancer organization of one’s choice or to an Educational Fund for Lydia. Arrangements by Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge.

Pete spent his entire life in the Fowlerville and Webberville areas and worked as a gardener for the former Hav-A-Look Gardens in Fowlerville. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Wanda Smith; a brother, Bill Whitehead, and a cousin, George Whitehead. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 14, 2015, beginning at 9:30a.m. with the funeral service following at 11:00a.m. at the Herrmann Funeral Home-Niblack Chapel in Fowlerville. The burial will follow at Alchin Cemetery. (517-223-8656) pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Army of Livingston County also enlists individuals as paid ringers. “We use paid ringers to ill the kettle sites that are unmanned by volunteers, said Major Prezza Morrison. “Paid individuals keep the bells ringing and kettles manned during times that would otherwise be unmanned and kettles that are unmanned bring in little to no funds. Additionally, we are able to help individuals in need earn some extra income for the holidays. It’s a win, win all the way around. Anyone interested in volunteering to bell ring may sign up online, www.RegistertoRing.com, beginning October 9, 2015. Organizations wishing to take an entire day of bell ringing at one or several locations should contact Liz Welch directly at extension 347. Individuals interested in becoming a paid bell ringer may apply at The Salvation Army Corps of ice, MondayFriday, 9:00am-12pm& 1:00pm - 4:00pm, beginning Monday, October 5, 2015. Paid ringers will begin ringing on November 6th with various shifts through December. Applicants are encouraged to apply before October 16 as the approval process may takes several weeks. But it can be especially overwhelming for seniors who are moving from a long time residence Âżlled with decade’s worth of stuff and a lifetime of memories. Fortunately, there are several specialized services available today that can help make your mom’s move a lot easier. Real Estate Specialist To get help selling your mom’s home and/or Âżnding her a new one, you should look into hiring a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) or a CertiÂżed Senior Housing Professional (CSHP). These are realtors that have received special training, making them better equipped to help seniors and their family members through the Âżnancial and often complex emotional issues that can come with selling a long time family home and relocating. SRES and CSHP designees are educated and knowledgeable in such areas as downsizing, aging-in-place, senior housing options, reverse mortgages, as well as ways to use pensions, 401k accounts and IRAs in real estate transactions. And, if you need help from other professionals, a SRES and CSHP can put you in touch with qualiÂżed home inspectors, movers, attorneys, CPAs and other experts. To learn more or to locate a professional in your area, contact the SRES Council (VUHV RUJ, 800-500-4564) which also offers a free ÂłMoving On´ guide that help seniors and their family members with the decisions and transitions that come with moving. And to Âżnd a CSHP see 6HQLRUV5HDO(VWDWH,QVWLWXWH FRP. Moving Manager To help your mom get packed up and move, you should consider hiring a Âłsenior move manager.´ These are organizers who assist older people with the challenges of relocating, and can minimize the stress of this major transition by doing most of the work for you. They can help your mom pare down her belongings, decide what to take and what to dispose of, recommend charities for donations and help sell her unwanted items. They also get estimates from moving companies, oversee the movers, arrange the move date, supervise the packing and unpacking, have the house cleaned and just about anything you need related to her move. Costs vary depending on the services and size of the move, but you can expect to pay between $1,000 and $5,000, not including the cost of movers. To locate a senior move manager visit the National Association of Senior Move Managers website at QDVPP RUJ or call 877-606-2766. You can also search at Caring Transitions (FDULQJWUDQVLWLRQV FRP), the largest senior relocation and transition services franchised company in the U.S. But, before you hire one, be sure you ask for references from previous clients and check them. Also Âżnd out how many moves they have actually managed, and get a written list of services and fees. And make sure they’re insured and bonded. If you can’t Âżnd a senior move manager in your area, another option is to hire a certiÂżed professional organizer who specializes in downsizing and relocating. To Âżnd one, check the National Association of Professional Organizers who has a searchable database on their website at QDSR QHW. 6HQG \RXU VHQLRU TXHVWLRQV WR 6DYY\ 6HQLRU 3 2 %R[ 1RUPDQ 2.
