Sixth Annual Impact a Hero weekend hits new record

Overnight lane closures scheduled along Highway 6 Periodic overnight closures along State Highway 6 between Kensington Boulevard and Lexington Boulevard are expected through October. The closures are needed while the following improvements are constructed along the roadway: • The northbound State Highway 6 turn lanes to Kensington Boulevard will be extended. • The southbound lanes of State Highway 6 between U.S. Highway 59 and City Walk will be realigned to improve traffic flow. • Left-turn access from the northbound lanes of State

Highway 6 to City Walk will be eliminated. This will be accomplished by creating a continuous median at the location. • The southbound State Highway 6 right-turn lane to Town Center Blvd. will be extended. • The northbound State Highway 6 right-turn lane to U.S. Highway 59 will be extended. • The southbound U.S. Highway 59 frontage road rightturn lane to Highway 6 will be extended. Traffic disruptions will be minimized by scheduling necessary lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. during the project.

Scholarships awarded by Fort guesswho’sback Bend Friends & Neighbors Fort Bend Friends and Neighbors awarded $1,000 scholarships to seven Fort Bend County students at their Lazy Days of Summer luncheon, May 20, 2010 at Safari Texas. What makes this scholarship program unique is that it provides assistance for students who are planning to attend college in our local area and need financial aid to help achieve that goal. Funds for the scholarships are raised through the annual silent auction and donations. This year the Bookworms club donated the proceeds from author Philippa Gregory’s visit to Sugar Land to the fund. Scholarships were presented

Five FBISD High Schools make Newsweek’s “America’s Best High Schools” 2010 list Newsweek recently released the 2010 list of America’s Best High Schools, naming five Fort Bend ISD high schools among the top 1,622 schools in the nation. The five Fort Bend ISD high schools ranked this year are: Clements High School (No. 314), Austin High School (No. 823), Elkins High School (No. 916), Dulles High School (No. 943), and Kempner High School (No. 1093). The schools listed in the America’s Best High Schools 2010 report represent only six percent of all American public high schools. Rankings are determined by a combination of their number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge (AICE) tests given at the schools, compared to the number of graduation seniors.

Impact A Hero Weekend set new record of over $750,000 in donations, sponsorships and participation. Impact A Hero supports severely wounded veterans returning home from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and their families. Many times mothers, fathers, husbands, wives become caregivers to our wounded heroes and are forced to leave their jobs. Emergency financial aid is needed to pay bills including mortgage, rent, utilities, food and home and vehicle disability retrofits. Impact Player Partners
