11 The manager finally glances at the bench, time for Seny to warm up. He can feel the adrenaline, the drive, the hunger and the ambition to succeed. Life is no different; Seny was born in Senegal and is still finding his feet in England, working as a builder to bring in some income to keep his futsal ambition alive.
Then comes the golden chance. Seny makes a darting run towards the keeper’s area. An intelligent play by his teammate allows Seny to smash the ball on a volley with his left foot.
It’s a corner kick for West London Futsal and all players are placed around the box, Seny chooses to stay on the half way line. The ball finds its way to his right foot. No time to hesitate, he hits the ball like a canon from the half way line. All the keeper can do is memorize the moment as the ball hit the top right hand corner of the goal.
The fans are going bananas. The referee blows his whistle and the match ends 3 – 3 thanks to Seny’s spectacular effort. Seny is the season’s top goal scorer for the club. FOLLOW WEST LONDON FUTSAL
The score is now 2 -1, Seny just brought the deficit down and boosted West London Futsal’s morale. The whole crowd rejoices, singing his name. But the job is not finished. Seny passes the ball to the target man, who understands his play. He receives the ball back and Seny cleverly nutmegs the keeper and the ball is in the back of the net. It is 2-2 and there is big smile on the manager’s face. Just as the mood settles, the opposition score. The atmosphere starts to look gloomy for West London Futsal. Every day, young people are faced with problems such as violence, drug abuse, criminality and poverty. For many of these young people, football can offer a first step towards a better life. Millions of young people share not only a hope for a better future, but also a passion for the beautiful game. From the townships of Cape Town to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro and the back streets of London, football is a universal language. The streetfootballworld network unites more than 90 organisations worldwide that understand this language, harnessing the power of football to inspire social change. The streetfootballworld network’s approach goes far beyond the sport itself. In the Nairobi slum of Mathare for example, local coaches do not just organise football practice – they also coordinate waste management and recycling initiatives.

Young footballers can earn points in the league by keeping their neighbourhood clean. Similarly, when Cambodian organisation Spirit of Soccer gathers its players in the centre circle, it is not just to discuss tactics for the next game – the young participants also learn how to protect themselves from landmines. Spirit of Soccer’s founder and director, Scotty Lee, knows the benefits of a worldwide network: “I think the most important thing for me is knowing that there are like-minded people doing the same sort of thing. It becomes more of a community, a team.” Each network member organisation has its own specialised knowledge and valuable expertise, but the potential for global success stems from the collaborative spirit. Through cooperation and exchange, the network’s combined impact becomes more than the sum of its parts. The streetfootballworld approach does not just bring together development organisations – it also establishes contacts with influential partners who want to support them. In 2011 alone, 77 network member organisations were linked with partners such as Sony, adidas, and FIFA – with a total of $3M being channeled directly to social development projects.

The next big project is just around the corner. The online fundraising platform UNITED (justunited.com) will launch in May, combining a UEFA EURO 2012 prediction game with the opportunity to donate to grassroots development organisations throughout the world. There is still much more to be done – and streetfootballworld is dedicated to strengthening its commitment over the coming years. By 2015, the organisation aims to unite over 100 network members, reaching out to over 2 million young people annually. Football is much more than just a game – it has the power to change lives. James started playing professionally at the young age of thirteen, training every night with teams from Scotland and attracting recognition from across the border. As a youngster his talent was never the issue; the main thing holding him back was his height. James still struggles with it today; he is 5’10” and it is very difficult to find a place in many of the big clubs because they always have a six foot rule. But he made do. Through his dedication and perseverance James now plays with his very own club, Trinidad and Tobago Highlanders FC. The club has many talented players and an Academy to give youngsters an opportunity in football. A football community is much more than just the players on the field; every team needs support in the form or a coach or a referee. Trinidad and Tobago Highlanders did tremendously well last year, missing out on the super league play offs and out-scoring all the teams in the league by at least 10 goals. They hope to continue to improve this season and in the coming season to establish themselves as one of the top Trinidad and Tobago clubs, even in the Caribbean. Football in Trinidad and Tobago is under a complete transition. There MITOO FOOTBALL REVOLUTION
are problems with the FA and the national team. There currently isn’t a national coach, so there are many hurdles that have to be overcome to allow football in Trinidad to move forward. Help and support came from Justin Lall CEO of Lensyl Products Limited who is now sponsoring the Highlanders FC. James knows he has a job to do through educating young players about the good and bad aspects of the game. He continues to do that with the dedication he displayed in his younger years, hoping to pass some of that on to the football generation now. James’ life has changed dramatically over the last few years, trying to find a place for everything that is important to him. But one thing remains the same; his passion and love for football. The launch of the Mercurial Vapor VIII also marks the first time Nike have brought a feature long-enjoyed by professional players to the amateur market; the hybrid stud system.
Designed to offer devastating acceleration to the wearer, the soleplate features wider-outlying studs than it’s predecessor, designed asymmetrically on each boot. Nike have also pin-pointed the middle of the forefoot as a key zone for pressure whilst sprinting, and have added a chevron-shaped stud specifically to enhance this key biometric point. Despite it’s professional feature-set, Nike have almost halved the price of their latest addition to the Mercurial legacy; an RRP of £149.99 making the £280 Superfly III look decidedly overpriced.
