A MURMUR GOES THROUGH THE AUDIENCE WHEN “THE BEAST” ENTERS THE PITCH. ONCE HE STARTS ONLY THE FULL TIME WHISTLE CAN SAVE HIS OPPONENTS. With top speed close to national sprinters, opponents get terrified. It’s not only the pace that opponents fear. He manages the ball with complete ease, and dribbles at an alarming rate that leaves the opposing team questioning their tactics. However, it hasn’t been always like this for Corey. Having grown up in North London, there was a time when the words “jobless, hopeless and aimless” determined the life of this young man. He knew that if he didn’t pull himself together and dare to break out of his misery, he would have ended up like many others. This was not the life that Corey wanted to lead. The ball became his best friend. Later on he tries to explain the importance of this friendship by comparing it with a “fish that can’t live without water”. This friendship was the drive for him to achieve better things in his life. Teenagers of his age were hanging around with their friends in the evening and causing trouble due to boredom and lack of opportunity. Corey was also hanging around, but not at street corners. MITOO FOOTBALL REVOLUTION

Instead he spent his spare time around football pitches. He practised everything. Ranging from free kicks, shooting and passing to accuracy sprinting and his stamina; you name it. For him football was a big chance to change his life and he soon realized that only he could make it happen. From this moment of realisation, “the beast” was born.

By playing for his team he gradually became a local sports figure who was admired by the youth around him. He realised that this could be the start of something really big and that he could also positively influence the youth in order to get them away from the gang culture that surrounded so many within his community.

Corey’s life started to change radically when he met his coach who helped him perceive the world differently. He influenced him in many ways, including how he eats, sleeps and completes his training. He was more than just a coach. He supported him in every single way not only on but also off the field. The advice he received became invaluable to Corey.

Corey’s unique football talent took him on a journey around Europe that he will never forget. Currently he is volunteering at his local football club coaching and passing on his experience. What is more, Corey manages to engage with the local youth by using sport as a medium to interact and communicate.

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE WORDS “JOBLESS, HOPELESS AND AIMLESS” DETERMINED THE LIFE OF THIS YOUNG MAN. Inspired by his new mentor Corey started reading books, newspapers and also started listening to motivational speakers. Those were all things he used to avoid and even hated. But through this positive influence he finally became keen on those activities. What is more, Corey became more optimistic and open minded.

Corey is also now a FA qualified football coach with a good, positive outlook, and a desire to climb up the coaching ladder even further. Although Corey has already achieved a lot with his 19 years he still has more dreams and he is working hard to turn them into reality. This is just a little insight of what Corey Stewart has already achieved in his life. Due to his amazing progress and his motivational behavior he has also gained a big fan base on twitter.

01 GET DOWN LOW

06 FACES

The players will fill the frame and put viewers of the images at the same level as the players, as if they are right in the middle of the action.

Try to get clear pictures of players’ faces that way it gives viewers a story behind each image.

02 USE A FAST SHUTTER SPEED

Celebrations capture the real emotions of players and fans so after a goal or end of a game look to take these key pictures. If you are too far away from a celebration, look to the spectators and see if you can get their raw emotions.

A camera with low shutter speed will have blurred images. Having enough exposure to light will increase shutter speed allowing you to get as many shots as possible during a match. Some cameras even have sport mode that activates the fastest shutter speed possible. If you have the option on your camera, make sure to choose sport mode before you start.

03 PICK YOUR LOCATION WISELY Choose a spot and stay there, you don’t want to spend the whole game moving around! It’s important to make sure you aren’t looking directly into the sun and have a clean background that pulls most of the focus in on the action itself.

04 ANTICIPATE THE ACTION There’s a gap between when you press the shutter and the image is actually captured. Know your camera’s shutter lag to anticipate when you will get the perfect shot at the perfect time.

05 FILL THE FRAME Zoom up on the action or wait until it gets close to you. Pictures will not come out clear if they are from across the field. You can, however, crop a picture it has good quality even at further distances. MITOO FOOTBALL REVOLUTION

08 STRAIGHT HORIZONS/VERTICALS A football pitch will never seem completely straight no matter what angle you are shooting from. That said, it is best to focus on vertical images where you can use objects like a fence post or lamp as a reference point.

09 SPECIAL MOMENTS Look to capture moments that are important in a game, like a red card or even interaction between managers and their players.

AWAY FROM PROFESSIONAL STADIUMS, BRIGHT LIGHTS AND MANICURED FIELDS, THERE’S ANOTHER SIDE OF SOCCER. TUCKED AWAY ON ALLEYS, SIDE STREETS, AND CONCRETE COURTS, PEOPLE PLAY IN IMPROVISED GAMES, MAKING GOALS OUT OF ROCKS OR CONSTRUCTION HELMETS OR COKE BOTTLES, DRAWING LINES IN THE SAND OR THE DIRT. Every country has a different word for it. In the United States, we call it pick-up soccer. In Trinidad, it’s “taking a sweat.” In England, it’s “having a kickabout.” In Brazil, the word is “pelada,” which literally means “naked”—the game stripped down to its core. It’s the version of the game played by anyone, anywhere. Pelada is a documentary following Luke and Gwendolyn, two former college soccer stars who didn’t quite make it to the pros. A couple that met on the field, Luke was working at a billboard company and Gwendolyn was living on a writing grant. But they still played at night, doing 1v1s in the parking lot beneath their apartment. Not ready to be done, they quit their

jobs and take off to over twenty countries around the world, chasing the global phenomenon that spans gender, race, religion, and class. The film follows their yearlong journey, their tale one among many. While itss a different kind of game than the high-pressure college matches Luke and Gwen used to compete in, they find out the stakes can be just as high. In Bolivia, they bribe their way inside the country’s most notorious men’s prison, where cocaine is trafficked, people are held without trial, and soccer games rage constantly on the single court—an inmate says, “Here we have nothing. Our life is to play.” In Kenya, they go to Mathare, the oldest slum in Africa, where players bet twentyshillings on Saturday games. The field, which used to be a garbage dump, is at the center of the slum, and everyone comes to watch—a moonshine brewer confides, “Down here, everybody thinks you’re just another drunkard, but then when you get to the field, people say, ‘Oh, that person can play.’” For Luke and Gwendolyn, the game is what lets them in, bridging gaps in culture, experience, and language.

Soccer’s great power is the ability to create intimacy between strangers, and this is particularly true on the pick-up field. Their final stop, Iran, is perhaps the greatest test. When Luke wanders up to a court in central Tehran and says in broken Farsi, “Is it ok if I play with you?”…The Iranians beckon him to the field with both hands. Luke slings his thumb over his shoulder towards Gwendolyn and says faintly, “Her too?”

From businessmen who play on the rooftops of Tokyo, to women who herd llamas in the mountains of Peru, from eighty-year-old Brazilians, to Arabs and Jews who occupy the same court in Jerusalem but refuse to play on the same team, Pelada tells the story of the people who play.

These factors make them vulnerable to risky behaviour, such as drug abuse, gang membership and working in unsafe conditions. Through the power of football, streetfootballworld network member SALT Academy is engaging young girls and boys in community activities, teaching them important life skills and empowering them to make positive life choices. Founded in 2006, Sports and Leadership Training Academy (SALT) provides education and support for 2,000 young Cambodians through a community-based football league. In a region with a high incidence of human trafficking, SALT launched the Mighty Girls programme to specifically support girls in their education and personal development.

BROADENING HORIZONS, IMPROVING CONFIDENCE The Summer School is an important part of the Mighty Girls programme, providing at-risk girls with a two month curriculum of football training, art classes, swimming lessons as well as catch-up sessions in subjects like English, Khmer and science. In her role as programme manager for SALT, Shannon Hiller has witnessed firsthand the effect which football can have on people’s lives: “The girls train, play friendly games, or have tactical sessions every

day to improve their confidence and skill on the field. Participants can also attend workplace visits, broadening their horizons and inspiring them for the future.”

DANY’S STORY In many cases, the Summer School has transformed the lives of the participants. “Dany, one of the girls who attended for the first time this year, was at risk of dropping out of school, she was often nervous and unsure of herself,” recalls Shannon. “But during the season she started to show her passion and dedication to football – coming to extra practices, helping out the coach of the younger team and cheering on her friends.” “When Dany was invited to join the Summer School, her face lit up. Now, after finding her calling on the field (as a goalkeeper!) and joining in all the group activities, she has grown in confidence and isn’t shy to be herself. She has even been selected as part of a second team going to the National Women’s Championships later this month.”

UNITED FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE Success stories like Dany’s demonstrate the positive effect that organisations such as SALT can achieve. However, they are often limited in their reach by a lack of funding – meaning that many young people miss out on the opportunity to participate in

activities. In order to extend the scope of the Summer School to include even more girls, SALT took part in the UNITED fundraising challenge – an online donation platform initiated by streetfootballworld to support organisations working in the field of Development through Football.

SHANNON IS KEEN TO EMPHASISE THE DIRECT IMPACT WHICH THE FUNDS RAISED THROUGH UNITED HAD IN REACHING MORE ATRISK GIRLS SALT eventually won the fundraising challenge, raising a total of €6,540. UNITED not only helped SALT access funds – it also increased awareness of its projects throughout the world. Shannon explains: “Since online donations can be difficult to Cambodia, UNITED really helps us connect to donors all over the world. Moreover, the fundraising challenge gave us a great way to mobilise our supporters to reach out to their own networks and spread the word - not just about giving money but also about our projects like the Summer School.” Shannon is keen to emphasise the direct impact which the funds raised through UNITED had in reaching more at-risk girls: “We were initially worried we wouldn’t have enough funds to cover the underlying costs - like daily transportation - which increase a lot if you invite just a few more ISSUE 06 DEC/JAN 2013

kids. Thanks to UNITED and other generous donors, we could accept a lot more girls who were border-line risk and ended up with over 50 girls attending the programme!”
