Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Initial Training (8 Hours) The Environment Protection Agency’s 2008 regulation of lead-safe practices requires contractors working in homes built before 1978 where children under six or pregnant women reside, to take the proper precautions to work lead-safe. These precautions include minimizing dust, containing the work area, and conducting a thorough clean up to reduce the potential exposure associated with disturbing lead-based paint. The Federal Government banned lead-based paint for residential use in 1978 but many homes in the U.S. still contain it. Renovation activities that disturb lead-based paint can create lead hazards that have wide-ranging effects on health, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and even death. Those most at risk are children under six years old.
