David N. Johnson, Ed.D This past year was an exciting time at JCC. The college officially turned 45 years old in September of 2014. This fall, we celebrated with many special activities like our Donor Appreciation and Scholarship recipient event, a 1969 tribute concert, and a fun Movie on the Lawn for our campus and the Johnston County community on Halloween. We will continue to commemorate the college’s 45 years of success throughout the upcoming year. While our history is very important to our four decades of success, we are also progressive at JCC. A few months ago, we rolled out a new brand with a fresh, new logo and launched a redesigned Web site. We believe this new image and enhanced technology will bring us into the 21st century and allow us to move forward in serving our students, employees, donors, alumni, and the community as we strive to create one college with endless opportunities. This year, we increased our focus on student success. Campus-wide initiatives such as enhanced student orientation and Agree 2 Degree are helping our students achieve their educational goal of receiving a degree, diploma, certificate, or workplace credential before leaving JCC. We’ve also expanded our health sciences classes and are now offering more nursing assistant and phlebotomy courses at our Cleveland Center in an effort to meet the high demand for these employees in our county. We awarded nearly $650,000 in scholarships, program funds, and grants to students, faculty, and staff this year. We at JCC value our role in our community. We are grateful for the opportunity we’ve had and will continue to have to make Johnston County a better place.

Lyn Austin, chair of the Johnston Community College Board of Trustees, received the 2014 Southern Regional Trustee Leadership Award from the Association of Community Colleges. A resident of Clayton, Austin has served as a member of the JCC Board of Trustees for 18 years. She currently serves as chair of the board, a position she has held for 14 years. Her service on the board began in 1996, and she has served tirelessly and faithfully since that time as an appointee by four different governors of the State of North Carolina. Austin also serves on the Executive Board of the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees (NCACCT) and is the chair of the association for 2014-15. She is also a liaison to the State Board of Community Colleges Policy Committee that makes recommendations to the full board regarding statewide policy issues that impact the colleges. She currently serves on the Community College Program Audit Study Committee of the North Carolina General Assembly, which is charged with determining how program audit procedures may be streamlined to minimize the burden on institutions being audited. Austin also serves every year on the committee that selects the NC community college president of the year and outstanding faculty member of the year. In addition to her community college advocacy, Austin participates in a vast array of civic and volunteer activities. Some of the organizations on which she serves include the Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation, the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, the Women’s Club of Clayton, and the Clayton Chamber of Commerce, which named her Citizen of the Year in 2002. JCC President David Johnson thanked Austin for her tireless advocacy for community colleges. “Lyn has been a steadfast champion for JCC and community colleges across our nation for a long time,” Johnson said. “We are so grateful for her passion and dedication to student success, and she is so deserving of this national honor. JCC is able to change lives every day because of Lyn’s leadership and commitment to high quality, educational opportunities.” The ACCT Association Awards were announced during the ACCT Awards Gala on Friday, October 25, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in Illinois.

OUTSTANDING STAFFER: WANDA HOWELL Wanda Howell works hard every day to make sure JCC looks spic and span. “I try to keep everything clean for everyone, and I try to put a smile on everybody’s face every morning,” Howell says. Howell is a housekeeper at the College and her meticulous work ethic and dedication to her job are two reasons her colleagues selected her as the recipient of the 2014 Rudolph A. Howell Outstanding Staff Person Award. “I was so shocked when I learned I received the award,” Howell says. “It was such an honor getting it, and I appreciate everybody that voted for me.” Howell, a JCC employee for five years, is primarily responsible for making sure the busy Wilson Building, which houses the administrative offices, student services, the student lounge, classrooms and computer labs, always looks its best. It’s a challenging and often thankless job, for sure, but Howell never complains and always works with a positive attitude. “I love working here, and I love the people that work here,” she says. Howell received a $1,000 cash award and a reserved parking space on campus for the year. “Wanda is such a great person and one of the hardest working employees at JCC,” said Ken Mitchell, associate vice president of auxiliary services. “She is full of energy and works non-stop. We are so grateful for all she does for the college.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
SHERYL JOHNSON IS JCC’S OUTSTANDING INSTRUCTOR Sheryl Johnson likes to tell her students that no math problem is unsolvable. “Math is a struggle for a lot of students, so I really enjoy helping them, watching them grow, and seeing them become successful,” Johnson says. Johnson’s patience and ability to motivate her students is one reason she’s been named the recipient of the 2014 Earl C. and Doris F. Helms Excellence in Teaching Endowment at JCC. Selected by fellow instructors in the JCC Faculty Association, Johnson received a $1,000 stipend in recognition for her excellence in the classroom. Johnson is the math lab administrator at JCC. A JCC instructor for the past 14 years, she has bachelor degrees in both math and English with a total of 30 years teaching experience in both subjects. “It’s definitely an unusual combination, but it has served me well,” she says. Johnson said her teaching career has been a rewarding experience. “It’s very rewarding when students come back to see you and tell what they’re doing, whether they are working or are at a four-year college,” she says. “It makes you feel good that you’ve had a positive impact on their lives.” In addition to her teaching, Johnson has also been a leader among her peers at the college. She is a former president and current vice president of the JCC Faculty Association, and she has written curriculum and textbooks for college math and English courses. Johnson has also judged senior projects in local high schools, served as director of the Girl Scouts for Johnston County for three years, and is a member of the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) and the State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC).

An educator, a mentor and a leader, she succeeds in the classroom, the workplace, and the community.” Johnson said she appreciated the recognition and vote of confidence from her fellow instructors at JCC. “I really like the close knit environment at JCC,” she says. “I enjoy working with my colleagues, and having relationships that allow us to share and support one another.” Johnson lives in Raleigh. She and her husband have four grown children and three grandchildren.
Instructor Jean Stowers said Johnson is dedicated to education and student performance. “Sheryl is knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and she is always prepared to teach and assist her students,” Stowers said. “With quiet dignity, she also represents her colleagues professionally as an officer in the

student achievements JCC MEDICAL OFFICE STUDENT IS ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE WINNER After 18 years of working in the airline industry, Margaret Raynor decided to retire in 2005. She tried several different jobs over the next six years, but she still wasn’t fully satisfied. “One day my husband and I were sitting around talking, and he suggested I go back to school and pursue a career in the medical field,” Raynor of Smithfield recalled. “At first, I didn’t think that was a good idea, because of my age. I was thinking someone my age would have a hard time focusing, concentrating on school work, and just retaining the material.” But after a few months of consideration, Raynor, now 47, enrolled at Johnston Community College in January 2011. It didn’t take long for her to excel in the classroom and become a leader at JCC. And that’s the primary reason why she’s JCC’s 2014 recipient of the Academic Excellence Award. A dean’s list and Phi Theta Kappa student, she is also the treasurer of the Student Government Association, president of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and treasurer of the National Technical Honor Society.
A recent recipient of the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award, Raynor will graduate in May with an associate’s degree in medical office administration. “I’ve had the pleasure of teaching Margaret as well as interacting with her in other activities on campus,” said Paula Parrish, office administration instructor. “She has demonstrated hard work and determination through earning her degree as well as leading her fellow classmates.” “She is truly an icon for academic excellence here at JCC,” added medical office instructor Jean Stowers. At JCC, academic excellence award recipients are nominated by faculty or staff and selected on the basis of selected academic criteria, which are consistent with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society criteria. Fifty-eight students, one from each community college, received academic excellence awards. Raynor will receive a plaque and medallion at graduation for her accomplishment. Raynor said her success at JCC wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of her husband, Clifford, and adult son, Michael. “I couldn’t have done it without them in my corner,” she said. “JCC has helped bring out the leader in me. “My experience here has taught me how to be more organized and more responsible. I’m learning something new every time I go to class.”

CELEBRATING GRADUATION
STUDENT AMBASSADORS JCC selects up-and-coming student leaders each year to serve as its prestigious Student Ambassadors. The students receive paid tuition for the year through private monies given to the College Foundation. In return, the Student Ambassadors are involved in a number of Foundation special events and student activities on campus to foster their leadership skills. They also participate in several community service projects during the academic year and assist with several food, toy, and clothing collection drives for needy individuals during the holiday season.
Johnston Community College celebrated its 2014 and 2015 graduates with commencement ceremonies in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium on the main campus. In May 2014, JCC awarded more than 550 associate degrees and diplomas to students who completed their study in the summer of 2013, fall of 2013, or spring of 2014.

Jackie Ring, chief operating officer of Johnston Health, Clayton, delivered the commencement address to Monday’s health sciences graduates. Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree, director of athletics at North Carolina Central University, gave the general commencement speech at Tuesday’s ceremony. Ann Marie Tolar of Benson, who earned an associate degree in arts degree, received the President’s Award for her scholastic achievement and leadership. Latifah Nixon of Princeton, who earned an associate in arts degree, received the Citizenship Award for her leadership and service to fellow students. In May 2015, JCC awarded nearly 600 associate degrees and diplomas to students who completed their study in the summer of 2014, fall of 2014, or spring of 2015.

Johnston Community College in partnership with the Johnston County Chambers of Commerce hosted the Breakfast before Business in February 2014 and March 2015 on the main campus in Smithfield. Some 150 business and community leaders attended the breakfasts, which were sponsored by First Citizens Bank, Four Oaks Bank, and KS Bank, Dr. Eric Janis of Wake Heart and Vascular of Smithfield, CenturyLink, Golden Corral, and Sleep Inn and Suites. The College recognized Sona BLW Precision Forge, Inc. as the recipient of its Business and Industry Partner Award for 2013. A Selma manufacturer of forged gears and axle components, Sona has contributed to curriculum development and provided job training opportunities for several of JCC’s workforce training programs. At the 2015 event, the College recognized Carolina Comfort Air as the recipient of the Business and Industry Partner Award for 2014. Owner Phillip Tyler took classes in the heating and air conditioning program at JCC, learned the business and built his own company. The business has been a strong supporter of the Foundation and has supplied the program with donated equipment. Thank you Sona and Carolina Comfort Air!

JOHNSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE UNVEILS NEW BRAND In September 2014, JCC launched an exciting branding campaign, unveiling a new logo and a redesigned Web site. JCC’s current logo had existed since 1999. Because of the growth and change the college has experienced over the past 15 years, marketing initiated an updated brand for JCC. In the spring of 2013, employees and the community were surveyed about the college’s current brand and asked for their suggestions for improving the college’s image. After gathering presidential input, reviewing the mission, goals, and values of the college, and considering suggestions of JCC employees, the staff at Bouvier-Kelly, a Greensboro marketing firm, created a new logo mark that speaks to the current personality of JCC. They also reviewed the college’s tag line – One College. Endless Opportunities, which had been used for about four years. After considering the conversations and input from leadership and employees, Bouvier-Kelly saw no reason to change the tagline. It works, it blends with the new logo, and it succinctly tells who we are at JCC. The Johnston Community College brandmark is designed to reflect the intentions, goals, and purpose of our College. The shield shape contains a spiral burst of light design that symbolizes vibrancy and new beginnings. As it is held in the shield, the spiral also creates the recognizable shape of the letter J. From the central point in the burst of light, there are many lines that extend outward, just as there are many paths of educational and professional opportunity that begin at JCC. The convergence of these lines also represents the culmination of talent and potential that we, the students, faculty, and staff, bring to JCC. The simple, clean typography and the classic design of the mark reflect the sense of pride we wish to convey while also building a contemporary look that can grow with us

into the future. All of these characteristics inherent to our brandmark are inspirational as we move forward in creating one college with endless opportunities. A brand is more than just a logo. A Web site is an organization’s best marketing tool, so we knew a redesign of our site was a critical element of our new brand. After much research and consideration, about a year ago, we selected OU Campus as our new content management system. OU is user friendly and is used by many colleges and universities across the country. Over the past year, the web governance team and many other JCC employees have been hard at work planning the design and migrating content from the existing site. The new system fosters a team update approach. About 30 content mangers and approvers now have the ability to easily and quickly create, edit, manage, and publish information, photos, and videos. The site has a fresh look and is mobile friendly to better serve our customers. Reorganized navigation and a simple menu structure based on relationships helps current students, future students, alumni and friends, faculty and staff, and the community easily find the information they are looking for about the college. A final element of the branding campaign was the creation of five heartfelt testimonial videos of students and alumni. The videos incorporate real stories from real people and speak to the positive impact JCC has made on their lives. JCC is truly one college with endless opportunities.

JCC CELEBRATES 45 YEARS JCC celebrated 45 years of educational success with activities for employees, students, donors, and the community to commemorate the special anniversary. Employees visited the county’s local high schools with recruitment efforts and participated in volunteer opportunities on campus on the National Day of Service. The College also recognized the dedication of our local public safety employees with a breakfast on campus. The community enjoyed free popcorn and a movie on the lawn featuring the hit film Godzilla. The College Foundation recognized faithful donors and outstanding scholarship recipients during a Donor Appreciation and Scholarship Recipient event. Afterwards, guests enjoyed a 45th Anniversary Tribute Concert in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium featuring special guests who performed a variety of Billboard hits from the late 1960s and early 1970s.

FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS DONOR APPRECIATION The JCC Foundation honors its donors and scholarship recipients at a Donor Appreciation and Scholarship Appreciation event each fall. In 2013, approximately 250 scholarship recipients and donors attended a luncheon celebration in the Great Hall of the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. In 2014, the Foundation recognized faithful donors and outstanding scholarship recipients at an outdoor dinner and 45th anniversary tribute concert in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. Since 2013, JCC has awarded over $835,000 in scholarships. NEAL LANCASTER-FOUR OAKS BANK CHARITY CLASSIC Each fall, the JCC Foundation hosts its annual Neal Lancaster-Four Oaks Bank Charity Classic. In October 2013 and 2014, some 60 teams participated in the major college fundraiser at the Country Club of Johnston County. The events raised nearly $140,000 for critical areas of funding such as scholarships, program enhancement, and academic enrichment at JCC. BACK TO CLASS In 2013, Johnston Community College Foundation started a scholarship program, Back to Class, for alumni graduates. Returning students who received a curriculum certiďŹ cate, degree, or diploma or graduated with select JCC continuing education credentials are eligible to take a class through scholarship support to help with retraining or advancement needs. To date, nearly $26,000 has been awarded to more than 200 alumni students.
