Redesigning Your If you cannot remember when was the last time you went out shopping for clothes due to your limited budget, perhaps there is a solution for you not to feel "out of fashion" anymore. Garnishing and remodeling clothes is not only an interesting idea for you to pass your time with, but it can actually help you renew your wardrobe with the minimum amount of money possible.

Style

By K. Buchanan

Transforming clothes was always connected with providing many important functions for human activity. In addition, transformed clothes are a byproduct of creativity and ingenuity. Being a stylish person is not easy. Thus, improving your clothes' demeanor as an act of conscious fashion shift towards contemporary refashioning of secondhand clothing is actually rather progressive. Experiencing the new character of that same old pair of jeans you have bought three years ago, can be the outcome of your dedication to commit some time and renew its old fit. A few cuts, at the right places, some foe crystals on its back pockets, a monogram on the thigh, a gold sparkling textile marker across the waist, are some of the things that can help you transform your used clothing and attract other peoples' attention to your unique style illustrated by your personally crafted fashionable creations. Additionally, transforming old clothes, in any way, can become your new potential value to another social group. You might even discover a hidden talent while in the process. A number of people, who have begun remodeling or garnishing their clothes due to need or as a new hobby, experienced tremendous success through their hand-made creations and entered the fashion industry from the backstage. The "one-piece" deal is a strong marketing incentive when people need to convey through their clothes the feeling of being different; this need grows worldwide as globalization transcends all known boardersespecially that of fashion. By selling their creations to a variety of clothing stores, or more recently online, these clothes re-crafters reintroduced an old idea, which became an instant urban trend. Thus, next time you look frustrated the resources you have available in your closet, instead of wasting time and money in trying to figure out what to wear for a night out, why not using your imagination along with some of your other skills to renovate the pieces of your wardrobe that need a little sparkle again to shine? Apart from it being a great idea to spend some quality time alone, redesigning clothes can also open up new career horizons; at least it can amuse you and your friends. Transforming an old skirt into an apron or a pillow case, garnishing your worn-out pants with silver spray suitable for textile painting, altering the length of your old simple black dress, or engraving your initials on your leather bag may be some of the alterations you can perform to your possession and enter a party with a redesigned style. The most important thing is that you will be able to congratulate yourself when one will gaze your looks and admire your stylish appearance. Most importantly, you will know that no fortune was spent on that "unique" piece of clothing you are wearing. Isn't that a sweat deal?

Simple Solutions for Your

New Year’s Resolutions!

By Sterling Mire

As practicing spiritual life coach, I am often approached by clients who seek to fulfill important goals. Through my unique Art of Manifestation program, I am able to help them attain these goals when they create their wonderful New Year. Most of my clients want to make their New Year’s resolutions stick. But how do they do it? Right now, it's an exciting time to create New Year’s resolutions. Maybe yours include engaging going out friends, eating healthier, saving money, helping others or simply taking more time out for you! It may also be a confronting time when we think about past, unfulfilled resolutions. How do we keep these new resolutions from getting off track? I've created a simple Top 10 Tips list for keeping all of your New Year's resolutions right on target! 1. Be sure that you can commit. Is your resolution something that you truly want or does it just simply look good on paper? Create resolutions that inspire you the most at this time. Don't overwhelm yourself with too many commitments. Once those resolutions have come into being, you can create more – even before the year is up. 2. Keep your focus clear. Start your day with morning visualizations. See yourself with the desired results of your New Year's resolutions. This will keep you on track and connect you with the experience of doing it. 3. Keep a daily diary. Implement your New Year's resolutions into your daily or weekly plans. Schedule your resolutions into your day and write about them at the end of the day. This keeps them present and alive for you – and will help keep you on target! 4. Tell others. Share your stories of success and inspire others. Telling others what you are up to will keep you accountable, too. So, when someone asks you how your new workout routine is going, you can easily reply by saying, "Fantastic!" 5. Be determined. Don’t let anything take you off track and don’t let anyone – including you – talk you into allowing old habits to creep back in. It's easy to return to what’s familiar to us, but while familiarity may be comfortable, it’s not fulfilling. Remember, it takes a little time for your New Year's resolutions to become the new familiar to you and what is satisfying, too! Also, if you get off track, simply admit to it and get back on the horse. It’s really that simple. 6. Take bite-sized action. Take “bite-sized action.” Commit yourself to your New Year’s resolutions for just one month if you feel overwhelmed with big-picture commitments. After one month, determine whether you’d like to take on another month of engaging in your resolutions. Repeat this action. It takes about 21 days for change to occur, that is, for something to become more habitual and second nature. By the time a month is over, chances are, you’ve acclimated to your new lifestyle. Slipping back into old ways may prove harder than you think! Consistency is the key. If we can be consistent for a period of time, the rest is easy. 14 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

7. Use the buddy system. Your friend is another way to stay on the path! When someone else shares the same goals, it can keep us in check. Fulfilling on your goal is twice as sweet with someone else. There are lots of resolutions that could involve a buddy, such as: exercising, eating healthy, quitting bad habits and fun hobbies. Even if your New Year’s resolutions don’t involve others, you can still share your goals, which include that added support you need. 8. Visual reminders. Put images of what you desire everywhere on the refrigerator, in the bathroom, on your desk, on your screensaver, in your wallet, in your car. Wherever you spend time, put a visual reminder of what you want to come to fruition. 9. Reward yourself. At least once a week, do something extra special for yourself as a reward for keeping to your goals. Maybe it's an inexpensive massage, buying a beautiful piece of clothing, an adventurous horseback ride or maybe simply taking a scenic drive all on your own! 10. Acknowledge yourself. Give yourself credit for taking on new habits and choosing to make lifestyle changes. That alone is the first step towards success. Remind yourself that you are worth it! Keep moving in the right direction and you will find yourself fulfilling on those "hard to keep" New Year's Resolutions in no time! Creating and fulfilling your New Year's resolutions doesn't have to be an intimidating process. It takes just some practice and a little effort. Applying these tips can make the difference between making your New Year’s resolutions stick or breaking them. Before your new year is up, these resolutions will seem like second nature and you will not only reap the benefits of your New Year's resolutions, but you will say "hello" to a new you and a brand new way of life! Skin Resolutions By Brooke Hudis

The New Year is the perfect time to shake up your skin care routine. Swapping out your daily cleanser, toner, spot treatment or moisturizer for products that are targeted for your skin concerns could be the remedy you need to maintain that radiant glow all year long. Recharge your spirits (and pores!) with a new regime & tips from the experts with ULTA Beauty. To focus on the importance of great skincare by offering exclusive tips from our experts for the New Year from top beauty industry experts.

6 Skin Resolutions for Beautiful Skin: 1. Enjoy Your Coffee. Studies show that coffee beans & caffeine can produce elastin (aka tight skin). A quick skin tightening tip that may surprise you! If only spin class could be this easy & sweat free: • Bliss – Like a spinning class for your not-so-skinny cells, bliss's topical treatments FatGirlScrub and FatGirlSlim targets problem areas by energizing lethargic lipids to let loose and go 'lymphatic'. 2. Stay Hydrated. Skin thirsty for some moisture? Staying hydrated through the harsh winter months is key. Stay smooth with these featured products: • Radiant SkinCare by Benefit Set – Dull skin from daily stress? With this 6 step set, skin is guaranteed to be polished, cleansed & hydrated for travelers on the go. • DDF – Their simplifying elixir boosts skin's moisture barrier by 70% with ingredients including ficus leaf, lotus flower and red clover extracts. 3. Thou Shall Not Pick. Spots should only be for the runway or your cute pup! For those with combination or breakout prone skin, ULTA skincare experts offer these suggestions: • StriVectin-EV – Their new Get Even Spot Repair has a concentrated formula that targets stubborn spots at the source. After 4 weeks, excess pigmentation diminishes and after 8 weeks, stubborn spots visibly lighten. • Philosophy – Want amplified results on skin discoloration? Look to the #1 professional protocol for addressing dark spots: a skin brightener + a retinoid. Simply pair Philosophy's revolutionary new Miracle Worker Miraculous All-Over Brightener and Dark Spot Corrector with their best-selling Miracle Worker Miraculous Anti-Aging Retinoid Pads for fast, clinically-proven results. • Mario Badescu – Did you know that the Whitening Mask isn't only for discoloration? it's a great mask for overall brightening too! This hydrating mask will brighten uneven skin tones and gently minimize the look of old acne scars. Give the Whitening Mask a try!

4. Get 8-10 Hours of Sleep a Night. Research shows cells are most efficient at healing during nighttime sleep. Work on cell renewal and say "hasta la vista" to dark under eye circles with these miracle go-to products: • bareMinerals – With their active cell renewal night serum, accelerate cell turnover and boost moisture levels while you sleep. Wake up to firm, healthy, younger-looking skin. • Hydroxatone – Always apply under eye products with your ring finger! This is your weakest finger and will ensure a gentle product application to the delicate, thin skin under the eyes -- applying too much pressure can break capillaries and even cause bruising! 5. Prepare to Change. Your skin changes as you age and so should your skin care if you want to keep a youthful appearance. Be sure to use products that correspond with your age and skin concerns. The experts at Dermalogica suggest these: • 20s: Clean skin is the foundation of healthy skin. Perform the Dermalogica Double cleanse that begins with PreCleanse to lift makeup and oil-based debris, and follow with your favorite Dermalogica Cleanser for super clean skin. • 30s: Adding a weekly hydrating masque to your routine can dramatically boost radiance and reduce appearance of fine lines. • 40s: Keep up with your water intake to hydrate skin from the inside out. • 50s: Menopause can trigger up to a 30% reduction in collagen. Speak with your skin therapist about products that can help boost collagen production to keep skin firm. 6. Glow as you Go. A great skin care regime need not take a long time. It's all about using the right products and keeping up a regular skin care routine. New services like Dermalogica's MicroZone treatments take only 20-minutes at ULTA Salons and can be adapted to individual needs. Try Flash Exfoliation, Lip Renewal or Eye Rescue for targeted solutions for immediate skin care concerns.

Maintaining the Health of Hair Extensions. Tools: Opt for tools that are practical, rather than endorsements or packaging! Use a wide tooth comb with rounded tips, a loop (extension) brushes, and a soft bristle brush made of natural fiber to prevent less breakage and damage to the hair. Keep heat styling tools to lower than 300 degrees – excessive heat can internally burn the shaft and ruin the cuticle.

*additional tip: brush when needed! Brushing the hair consistently can encourage split ends and shedding which is only counterproductive to maintaining healthy hair.

Shampoos: Sorting through the plethora of products is the first problem…the second, how to use it. Don't over lather! Use a quarter-sized dollop and always start at the roots and work your way down to the ends. Conditioning: The biggest mistake is adding conditioner to your scalp! If you have fine, thinning hair, it will weight it down – making it heavier and resulting in a greasy buildup, which will display a visible separation from your natural hair and the extensions. Daily Maintenance: Avoid harsh hairsprays! Chemicals and alcohol found in aerosol sprays are extremely drying to the hair and causes excessive tangling, dryness and breakage. Instead of maintaining one style, it is practical to maintain the duration of your extensions. Drying: Towel drying is one of the biggest 'no-nos'. How many women are guilty of wrapping their freshly washed hair in a bath towel while they prep their skin and do their makeup? This process can lead to extreme dryness, matting and even worse – frizz! The roughness of the cotton can also cause breakage. It is best to squeeze as much as water out as possible, then patting down the hair with super absorbent PAPER TOWEL! It is lighter in texture and doesn't cause frizz. Vitamins: Vitamins are ideal to protect your natural hair under the extensions – conquering thinning and promoting growth. Biotin, a form of Vitamin B, promotes hair growth. Vitamin E helps to increase scalp circulation, which stimulates hair growth. Michelle also adds that hair extensions can use a great trim every 6-8 weeks! With brushing and styling, breakage is bound to happen. Keeping a healthier appearance starts with the aforementioned tips along with regular visits with a trained stylist to keep your faux locks in tip-top shape.

Embracing Your Setbacks

By TJ Philpott

In order to achieve success it is almost always inevitable that mistakes will be made and setbacks encountered along the way! For those who may fear failure, get over it and realize these setbacks are as much a part of achieving success as the euphoric feelings you experience upon your accomplishments! There is much to be learned and benefits to be gained from your miscues that will actually help you to become successful provided you keep both your eyes and mind wide open!

Uncover Obstacles The best way to find out what you're up against is to take action, get involved and quite frankly wait till you stub your toe! Planning is great and definitely needed but generally there will always be many 'unknowns' that only come to light through trial and error! One cannot become successful at anything unless they are made aware of and address any obstacles in their path! Once a mistake is made or a setback is experienced you now have a deeper understanding of what you need to do to eventually achieve success!

Here is a look at 3 benefits you can expect from mistakes made that hopefully demonstrate why you should NOT fear failure but rather embrace it!

Uncover Challenges Many times we discover challenges we did not anticipate which could alter our passions and even our paths! Unlike the obstacles we spoke of above these challenges could prove to be insurmountable due to a lack of resources or even skills that we are unable to acquire! The sooner we are made aware of such things the better since it will help minimize the time and effort that may be invested on an unachievable goal!

In the vast majority of cases in order to achieve success it is normal to first experience setbacks due to your own mistakes! Without prior experience it is unrealistic to expect your efforts will be flawless or go unchallenged! The best approach is not to fear failure but embrace it for what it can teach you and how it actually benefits you as discussed above in becoming successful at whatever you pursue! Achieving success should always be regarded as a journey that offers many lessons provided you pay attention to what is being taught!

Build Confidence Let's face it, meeting an challenge head on and defeating it helps to really boost your confidence! We're talking 'world beating' confidence that propels you forward into the unknown where you may have formally backed away from cheating you from the education, experiences and further opportunities! For those who fear failure and therefore are less incline to take risks that could pay off in new skills and greater self confidence, it is unlikely they will become successful at many things! The biggest loss of all perhaps could simply be the 'life experiences' involved in each new journey we take!

Defeat Debt

Be a "Debt Buster" by using these 3 steps employed by the leading nonprofit InCharge Debt Solutions Consumers viewing credit card statements too often experience "Sticker Shock," that is sickening, pulse-quickening reality slap of how much they actually spent over a period of time. After taking a deep breath and maybe intoning a soothing mantra or two, consider this three-step strategy for getting debt under control from InCharge Debt Solutions, a leading nonprofit agency that has helped over 1.2 million people pay back a staggering $2.8 billion in debt.

dent of InCharge. "Pack a bag lunch, look for savings in cable and insurance costs, do whatever you can to reduce your expenses, keep looking for new ways to cut back, and stick to your plan." 3.) Apply Savings to Debt - once every unnecessary expenditure has been eliminated, take inventory of your finances and apply as much as possible towards reducing your debts. Have you saved $80 per month in cost-cutting measures? Adding that to your normal credit card payments each month will reduce your debt by an additional $1,000 by the end of 2012. "The InCharge three-step strategy works only if you set goals, cut expenses and consistently apply the money you are saving each month towards your debt payments," reminds Etta Money. "It can be done, but it takes a commitment to change." For consumers intimidated by budget building, at a loss for where to begin expense cutting, or simply overwhelmed by their debt problems, InCharge certified credit counselors are standing by to help guide them through the process. Call 877-486-4924 for a free credit counseling session and start off on the path to solving your debt problems!

InCharge employs the same basic 3-step process when certified credit counselors work one-on-one with consumers in confidential and free telephone sessions. The key, whether you get help or do it on your own, is to objectively and completely evaluate the current financial situation, set clear and achievable goals along with a detailed budget and action plan for savings, and then be disciplined in applying those savings to decreasing the debt burden during the year. "People don't get into debt problems overnight, and they can't expect to get out of them overnight either, which is actually a silver lining," explained Etta Money, InCharge's president. "The benefit in getting debt reduced and controlled over time is that people have time to develop budgeting skills, spending discipline and the other necessary behavioral attributes that will benefit them for the rest of their lives." 1.) Evaluate and Set Goals – goal-setting is the most important part of overcoming debt problems. "When people are in financial distress they have trouble planning beyond the next day," advises Gail Cunningham, vice president of membership and public relations for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. "Setting both short- and long-term goals can define where you want to be and help you get there." Start the new year by setting a goal of how much debt you would like to eliminate and what you realistically think can be accomplished. 2.) Develop an Action Plan - find an expenditure to cut, look for another one and continue until you have chopped out every unnecessary expense in your budget. "Tackling debt requires a commitment to changing spending habits and building on cost-cutting measures," says Etta Money, presi 24 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

5 C’s

for Building a Successful Business

By Marsha Friedman

• Courage Thirty years ago, I probably would never have said it takes courage to lead a small business, but without it, I assure you, you’ll fail. There are dragons and quicksand and dark woods all around. You’ll find them in the day-to-day problems, the obstacles you didn’t see lying in wait, the risks you must take, and the stresses involved with honoring your obligations to everyone working with and for you. Trust me, your courage will grow every time you push your fear behind you and deal with what frightens you. Which will also help you build confidence.

Small businesses have made a huge recovery since the economic crash in 2008 and that’s good news for all of us. Since we account for 63 percent of new jobs, our success puts people back to work. That, in turn, helps us even more – people with paychecks buy stuff! And here’s more good news: The number of new businesses launching has grown each year since hitting a low in 2009. One report put it at 540,000 new businesses a month this year. In hopes of contributing in my own small way, I thought I’d share my 5 C’s for building a business. These are the guiding principles I’ve learned in the 24 years since I founded EMSI Public Relations. Through the ups and downs and all the mistakes, I’ve found that if I keep my compass set on the 5 C’s, we always make it through to smoother waters.

What are the C’s? • Caring It starts with caring enough about yourself and your dreams to stay committed to achieving your goals. (Giving up is never a good option!) You have to care enough about yourself to firmly believe that you deserve success and the good things that come with it. Just as important is caring about your staff and creating a positive work environment for them. Protect their sanity from the clients who want to chew them up and from new hires who don’t fit in and hurt morale. Be supportive when stressful situations arise in their lives outside of work. And ensure everyone has the knowledge and tools they need to be successful. None of us gets far at all if we don’t care about our customers. Give them the best exchange possible for their money; define expectations so that they understand the end product you are delivering and for which they are paying. Be willing to listen to their concerns, take responsibility for mistakes, and correct them.

• Confidence Think of the many challenges you’ve faced in your life, and the many times you’ve overcome them. Bring that confidence to your business. Believing that you can reach for and achieve your short- and long-term goals is essential to getting you there. • Competence Competence comes from knowledge and experience. Hone it by staying up on the trends and disruptions in your industry. One of the most important roles a CEO plays is as the visionary for his or her company. That means you can’t, and shouldn’t, take on jobs within your company for which you’re not qualified. You’ll make yourself miserable and your business will suffer. Hire an accountant to handle the financials. Get marketing help if that’s not your thing. As for employees, take the time to hire competent people who you’ll trust in their jobs – and then trust them! • Commitment Stay dedicated to your goals no matter how difficult that becomes. That may mean taking painful measures, as it did for me after the 9/11 terrorist attacks put the brakes on the economy. There came a point for my business when all hope looked lost. I had to make drastic cuts, including letting go beloved employees. For more than a year, I ramped up marketing efforts, diversified our services, and took other steps to get the business out of the red. In 2005, I succeeded – and it has been upward and onward ever since. Building my business has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I get a lot of pleasure from helping our clients meet their goals. I enjoy coming to work and spending time with the team I’m blessed to call part of the family. We laugh loudly and often! If you’ve recently launched a new business, know that you’ll encounter challenges. Don’t panic! Remember the 5 C’s and forge ahead with caring, courage, confidence, competence and commitment. GET FOCUSED: Women Less Likely Than Men to Focus on Financial Planning By Thomas Topinka

tent with those I adopted to prepare for the Olympics," says Boglioli. "Like preparing for the Olympics, exercise routines must change and develop with input from coaches and discussions about what works. Creating your plan for financial wellbeing starts with a conversation between you and loved ones and develops over time to a written plan that can change as necessary." Boglioli offers guidance on how to manage, based on her first-hand experience in balancing each of these multiple roles: • Have a written plan: o Talk to a financial professional to establish a framework: An advisor can ask the right questions to help you understand your current situation and set achievable, realistic financial goals. • Work out for the brain: o Physical activities provide extraordinary benefits to brain function. Understanding that exercise is good for the brain as well as the body can be a motivator to participate in regular physical activity to support overall wellness. The online survey, conducted by ORC International, looked into a variety of socio-economic variables, including gender, age, income and household size. Factors other than financial health that respondents said contribute to a balanced life include family, friends, spirituality and intellectual outlets. Age Differences According to the survey, older respondents, 55 and over, were more likely to view financial wellbeing as a necessity for a balanced life, with more than 77% saying it is needed for a balanced life: • Those between 18-24 are more likely (58%) to take time to focus on planning for their financial health at least once a week compared to those 35-44 (39%), 45-54 (47%), 55-64 (48%) and over 65 (39%). • Over 66% of respondents ages 18-54 say that worries over their personal financial situation have an impact on their health, while less than 52% of respondents ages 55 and above agree. Income Differences Fifty-four percent of men focus on planning for their financial health at least once a week, compared to only 42% of women, according to a Genworth survey released today that evaluates consumers' attitudes on financial wellbeing and a balanced life. Despite this, the survey found that more women than men feel financial wellbeing are important to maintaining a balanced life. "We found it interesting that those who said they need financial wellbeing to maintain a balanced life – particularly women– are less likely to spend time focusing on financial planning," said Wendy Boglioli, national Genworth spokesperson, caregiver and 1976 Olympic gold medalist. "Living well now and in retirement requires a balance between being both financially sound and physically fit. These factors are often overlooked due to busy lifestyles." Additional research suggests that having financial peace of mind in retirement is becoming a more important financial goal than accumulating as much wealth as possible, and that as people age financial peace of mind becomes a greater priority.(1) This latest research validates that there is a link between one's view of their financial wellbeing and overall physical wellbeing. Women & Achieving a Balanced Life The notion of achieving a balanced life can often seem like an impossible goal for women who are juggling the competing priorities of family, career and caregiver. "The principles of achieving a balanced lifestyle are consis 26 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

Financial wellbeing is equally important to all income groups, with more than 60% of respondents across income levels below $75,000 identifying financial wellbeing as needed for a balanced life. • Over 70% of individuals making over $50,000 say they feel good about their ability to manage the balance of physical and financial stress, while 61% or less of individuals below $50,000 in household income agree. • Households making less than $25,000 are most likely to feel like they need help but don't know where to get it (21% of respondents). 15% or less of all other income groups feel the same way. Household Size Respondents in larger households say that worries over their personal financial situation have an impact on their health. This compares to smaller households, which are more likely to feel good about their ability to manage and balance physical and financial stress. • 66% of respondents with households that have three or more members say worries over their personal financial situation has an impact on their health, while less than 58% of respondents with one or two household members agree. "Baby Boomers are a generation of participators, but we are also finishers," adds Boglioli. "Understanding that there is a symbiotic relationship between physical and financial fitness is important to achieving a balanced life."

Hidden Benefits of Exercise By Ginny Grimsley

With more than a third of Americans classified as obese, everyone from first lady Michelle Obama to TV news anchor Katie Couric is advocating exercise to maintain a healthy weight. That’s great, says Dr. Eudene Harry, author of “Live Younger in 8 Simple Steps,” but the benefits of exercise go far beyond fitting into those skinny jeans. For one, it will give you younger looking, more blemish-free skin. “The increase in circulation and perspiration that occurs with exercise delivers more nutrients to your skin while allowing impurities and waste to be removed,” says Harry, who combines years of emergency-room experience with holistic medicine in her private practice. “The result? A healthier complexion!”

She adds four more hidden benefits of a good workout: • Natural “feel-good” chemicals: Exercise releases endorphins, the brain chemicals that boost your mood and make you feel happy, as well as relieve stress, and enhance your self-esteem and self-confidence. Exercise has also been shown to increase neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, which gives us a natural high and allows us to sleep better. • Constipation prevention: Exercise increases the contractions of the wall of the intestine, helping to move things along through the intestinal tract more easily, and decreasing the time it takes to pass through the large intestine. But wait an hour or two after eating before exerting yourself: Exercising too soon after a meal can divert blood flow away from the gut and toward the muscles, weakening peristaltic contractions (and slowing down the digestion process). • Prevents brittle bones: Walking, jogging, dancing, weight training and yoga are all weight-bearing exercises that help strengthen bones. Swimming and bicycling are exercises that are considered non-weight bearing. During weight-bearing exercises, bones adapt to the impact of the weight and the pull of muscles by building more bone cells, increasing strength and density and decreasing the risk of fractures, osteopenia and osteoporosis. • Enhanced immunity: Physical exertion increases the rate at which antibodies flow through the blood stream, resulting in better immunity against sickness. The increased temperature generated during moderate exercise makes it difficult for certain infectious organisms to survive. Don’t overdo your exercise, or you won’t see all of these benefits, Harry says. “Check with a physician who can advise you on the right activities and intensity level for your individual needs,” she says. “For all the benefits of exercise, there are down sides if you go at it too vigorously for your physical condition. For instance, you can actually increase stress hormones, which can make you more vulnerable to illness, rather than building your immunity.”

Having Fun as We Age Regular physical activity at any age can help you live longer, feel better and reduce health problems. But far too many people, including baby boomers, don’t get the exercise they need. According to the 2012 Participation Report from the Physical Activity Council (PAC), 35 percent of Americans over the age of 55 are physically inactive. Since regular exercise helps control blood pressure, body weight, cholesterol and so much more, boomers need to find ways to get their bodies moving so they can live longer, healthier lives. “Though any amount of exercise is beneficial, ultimately adults should work up to getting at least 30 minutes most days of the week, as long as they feel comfortable and pain-free,” said worldrenowned nutritionist Joy Bauer. “From taking a Zumba class to walking and stretching, getting regular physical activity helps the joints stay loose, maintains muscle mass, and gets the blood flowing – all of which make everyday tasks easier.” The American Council on Exercise recommends older Americans choose exercise programs that include cardiovascular, muscle conditioning, and flexibility exercises. Low-impact, non-jarring exercises such as walking and swimming are good options. A key to sticking with a fitness program is making sure it’s enjoyable. A fun new program for older adults is Zumba Gold, a low-impact dance-based workout designed specifically for boomers and seniors. Workout routines combine salsa, merengue, flamenco and cumbia moves with fun music. For those that would prefer to work out in the comfort of their own home, there is also a Zumba Gold “Live it Up” DVD collection that offers 3 discs with workouts, as well as advice from experts in the fields of nutrition, brain health, enhancing your well-being and more.

The program was created by 71-year-old Joy Prouty, a veteran in the fitness industry and a former Rockette. “From cardio to toning, this collection brings together some of Zumba’s most popular offerings in a format enabling older adults to rediscover the energy of their youth,” said Prouty. To learn more about Zumba Gold, purchase the Zumba Gold “Live it Up” DVDs and find a class near you Workout Safety Tips Whenever beginning a new fitness activity or program, make sure you do it safely. • Wear comfortable shoes that fit well. • Stay hydrated with plenty of fluids. • Listen to your body. If it hurts or it feels like too much, stop. You also need to be aware of danger signs while exercising. Stop the activity and call your doctor or 911 if you experience pain or pressure in your chest, arms, neck or jaw; feel lightheaded, nauseated or weak; become short of breath; develop pain in your legs, calves or back; or feel like your heart is beating too fast or skipping beats. “It’s important to see your doctor before beginning any workout routine to receive a thorough cardiovascular evaluation,” said Bauer. “Once you’ve been cleared by your doctor, I recommend starting out slowly.” Pick an Activity that You Will Enjoy The best way to find a regimen that will stick is to choose something that you enjoy. You’ll be more likely to stick with it and reap all the benefits the physical activity has to offer. Bauer adds that a program like Zumba Gold is great because, if you enjoy dancing, it won’t feel like exercise and it can also be a social outlet: “Combining physical activity with social time is a total win-win.” FAMILY FEATURES

Achieving Harmony by Dr. Karen Hinton Photo by: Darryl Jones

Mental health is very important. As human beings we do not attend to the mental facet of ourselves enough. Nutrition plays a vital role in how we care for ourselves mentally. You see what we eat balances and stabilizes us internally. The nutrients from the foods we eat have the task of balancing us chemically from within. When we do not eat with a balance we are not as chemically stable inside and we exhibit that outwardly. This gives new meaning to the phrase “you are what you eat”, because literally we are. Physical health is often taken for granted and abused. Our society often does not advocate preserving our physical body enough. As a result of this neglect we age prematurely due to the stress that this creates. We tend to associate this with the aging process, but in fact, this is not true. There is an array of scientific research and case studies that prove we have many options to take control of preserving our health. These options work best when we start early in our youth. It is a fact that the body can suffer from some dis-eases as it ages and this is why preservations is an absolute MUST. Emotional health is one that we tend to nurture more when we are younger, as though it is age related. This facet is very important and its’ stability is greatly affected by the other key facets. The mismanagement of the others core facets tend to make it very difficult to manage ourselves emotionally. Our emotions are acted out in our behavior all the time. As we age some of us mature emotionally by way of proper parental guidance and or personal self-development later in life. When human beings do not get the proper parental guidance and do not embrace selfdevelopment in life we tend to see immature behavior exhibited as a result of being emotionally unstable.

Financial health has just recently over the last five years been added as a “health” component in general conversation. You may have heard this question before, “how is your financial health?” Some individuals can answer this question and some cannot. The fact that some of us cannot is the primary reason that we are in financial disarray. This facet creates a ton of stress in the majority of human lives lately. Once individuals start to access the proper information and education on tools that they can use to gain better control in this area of their own lives they will be on the road to a better financial health check-up Spiritual health is last but, certainly not least. The spiritual facet is the one that I found was the most important of all facets, therefore making it the key to balancing the other four core facets in ones’ life. It has been over a decade ago since I added the spiritual facet to my philosophy “The Five Core Facets Than Govern a Human Beings Life”. Often the spirit is represented as though it is separate from the body, but in a negative way. It is isolated from the human body as if they do not need on another and merely just coexist, this is a grave mistake. Generally we are taught that without the spirit the body is empty. If this is true they why do we not give more attention to our individual spiritual health? There are multiple reasons for this; however I found that developing our material selves is taught first, spiritual growth is focused on later, once we realize that we are still unfulfilled.

Tips for Warding Off Infection

“The other good news is that there are steps patients can take to reduce the risk of being infected – and bolster their ability to fight infection. As a surgeon, I make it a priority to educate my patients and the public at large about what they should be doing before and during a hospital stay to protect themselves.” Stevens says patients should always take responsibility for doing what they can to avoid infection and bolster their immune system. “Young people, elderly people and those with chronic illnesses – particularly diabetes – are most at risk for being overwhelmed by infection,” he says. He suggests: • Hand washing: This is the No. 1 precaution recommended by the CDC, Stevens says. “Wash your hands, ask visitors to wash theirs, and don’t be shy about asking hospital personnel, including doctors and nurses, to wash up before treating or examining you.” • Monitor your bandages: Alert a nurse if you notice your bandage is not clean, dry or completely attached to the skin surrounding a wound. Hospitals can be scary places: They’re brimming with bacteria, viruses and fungi -- the last things sick and injured people should be around. In fact, hospital-acquired infections are the most common complication of a hospital stay, affecting nearly 2 million Americans a year and killing nearly 100,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control. “There are a number of public and private initiatives under way to bring those numbers down. Life-threatening MRSA (antibiotic-resistant staph) infections have actually been declining since 2005,” says Dr. Marc Stevens, an AMA Physician Recognition Award recipient and formulator of Rapid Recovery, a beverage mix of nutrients that help tissue heal quickly after surgery or injury.

• Get in the best health possible before a scheduled hospital stay: People in their best possible mental, nutritional and physical health are better able to ward off infection and their wounds heal more quickly, closing portals to infection, Stevens says. “Whether it’s physical therapy you need, or vitamin supplements – there are 13 with a demonstrated role in healing – patients should do what’s necessary to prepare before going to the hospital, particularly, before a scheduled surgery.” • After discharge, watch for signs of infection: Symptoms that can indicate an infection include unexpected pain, chills, fever, drainage or increased redness around a surgical wound. If you have any of these symptoms, you should immediately contact your doctor.

36 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

What drew you to the world of fashion?

A: I saw an opportunity to create a brand that appealed to a modern, sophisticated, self-purchasing woman. I began with jewelry and the brand has since evolved to include footwear, handbags, apparel, eyewear and more.

What excites you about your industry?

A: The fashion industry is a constant evolution. It is fast paced and highly competitive. As an entrepreneur this industry presents a great opportunity and that is incredibly exciting.

How is motherhood?

A: I love being a mother – it’s my most important and rewarding role!

Has it changed you or inspirited your creative talents into your collection?

A: Of course. In generations past women were either professionals or parents, but today we can be both and it’s important our clothes transition throughout the various phases of our days as easily as we do. We can no longer compartmentalize the various aspects of our lives. From playing with your children in the morning to a presentation at the office and dinner with your husband or a night out with girlfriends we should feel confident and polished throughout. We are modern, multifaceted women who work at all aspects of our lives and our clothes and accessories should be a reflection of that.

What made you decide to expand your collection beyond jewelry?

A: There are very few brands that are speaking to the modern women in an authentic way. Our brand mission and philosophy is representative of how I live my life. The products are inspired by me and made for women like me who are passionate about professional and personal endeavors and want to look and feel great while pursuing them. Brand expansion was a natural evolution as we saw a great opportunity in the need for a genuine representation of today’s modern woman.

Have you had any notable mentors that have guided you through the industry?

A: I’m very fortunate to have many relationships with titans of industry in a variety of fields, most important being my mother and father. They have both been incredibly influential over the course of my career.

How does Ivanka Trump relax?

A: When I have time I love to take advantage of our spa at Trump SoHo in New York City. The Turkish Hammam is an amazing experiential treatment and so restorative.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

A: It is so important to be prepared. In everything I do preparedness allows me to increase efficiency and always work to the best of my ability. I definitely expect that from others and it’s frustrating to see a lack of forethought.

When you’re not thinking about your collections, what’s your favorite outing?

A: This summer we’ve been spending a lot of time outside the city. We love to be active and plan things like afternoon golf, picnics and swimming with Arabella, which always seems to be an endless activity. She can’t get enough!

What are you wearing?

A: I love Prabal Garung and Peter Pilotto. On the more accessible front I like Zara and of course Ivanka Trump. I haven’t worn a pair of shoes from another designer in three years!

What would be your advice on selecting the right piece for an evening out?

A: Commit to one statement piece and supplement with subtle feminine touches. For example, if I wear a really beautiful, bold pair of earrings I’ll pair them with some delicate gold bangles and a diamond band on my ring finger. Jewelry is meant to compliment an outfit, not overpower it.

Any words of wisdom for men, when selecting jewelry for their spouse? A: Trust your instincts!

What are the key elements of your line?

A: My collection is inspired by classic jewelry from the art deco period. Many of the designs are very geometric and structured with traditional accents.

What was the inspiration involved in the creation of your new jewelry collection?

A: Travel is always an inspiration, architecture, interior design, and certainly the other brand categories. There is so much synergy across all of my endeavors and the sources of inspiration are organic.

What was the best vacation location you’ve ever had?

A: I’ve been to Patagonia twice and it was the ultimate adventure.

With such a fantastic line, do you have a favorite?

A: I’ve really gravitated towards the Metropolis Sol cuff. We recently launched the new collection in Vegas at Couture and I wore it the entire time I was there. It instantly became a staple in my wardrobe.

Is there one quote you would like to leave us with? A: Seize the moments as they come!

On the brink of fashion discoveries we came across this young talented designer, DaJon Johnson, who is placing his mark on the world of fashion. Cultivated by the environment and company he keeps, he pushes a fashion-forward statement to women who want to dress their best with versatility and personality. At the young age of 20, his collection shimmers and sizzles to a stride all by itself. The longer his gowns, the more his signature shows. From King George, Virginia DaJon always been fascinated with sewing and the creativity that comes with it. During his high school years he found himself doing a lot of sketching on his down time and soon it became his passion. Once he sat behind a sewing machine, he had finally found a form of expression, and with it the opportunity to see his creativity come to life. In subsequent years, DaJon joined his high school theater department. The director knew that DaJon had exquisite taste and style, and asked him to be the costume designer, all while being in the production. This opened the door for him to try his hand at the sewing machine, again! This time with relentless passion, DaJon worked until he learned how to sew. Creating everything imaginable, with feathers, flowers, fur, and sequins DaJon received much accolades! He's produced costumes for plays with over 100 cast members with multiple costume changes. This is where he learned the necessities of management and organization.

What does it take to become a hot designer? What does it take to dream big? What does it take to see your collection on the runways around the world? Well, he’s dedicated himself to his craft, and with the support of his family they’ve built a designer’s showroom haven in the basement of their home and have filled it with sewing machines, patterns and racks of material, needles and thread. Truly destined to push himself into the spot light, DaJon works countless hours on sewing, pattern cutting, sizing and photo shoots. Taking advantage of every opportunity that comes his way, he knows that today’s fashion trend setters are setting the stakes high, and as a new designer he knows it’s a competitive market so he’s constantly pushing creativity. Not afraid to express himself though texture, color, lines and length, he found a niche that may just set him apart. DaJon hosted his first fashion show where he showcased his "Matador Chic" Collection. This was the platform by which DaJon would go to the next level. The clothes showcased were not only chic, sophisticated and well constructed, but quite unexpected for a 20-year-old designer. Word spread quickly about this young designer on the rise. His newfound notoriety has made him and his family very happy. Not content with being just a “local” designer, DaJon has nationwide aspirations. He hopes his dreams are realized soon but he knows it will take a lot of hard work, sacrifice and networking. DaJon knows the true meaning of commitment. By setting high goals as a designer and expecting nothing less than excellence from himself, DaJon Johnson is destined to be a designer with a bright future. 44 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

Jewelry has been an important part of human life and especially very important for women. It is thought to be the most precious thing for women. Jewelry is made of a lot of dissimilar valuable metals that are found were rare in this world. More the metal is valuable more its jewelry is worth. It has been desire of everyone to have the most expensive jewelry but this is not possible. Most of the designers make too much expensive jewelry but others make more expensive than they had made.

P

latinum jewelry is also one of the kinds of jewelry that are thought to be very expensive. Sometimes platinum jewelry pieces are said to so valuable that they cannot be bought by giving money. These types of platinum jewelry pieces are called master pieces and are used to gift them to some very special personality. That might be some well renounced celebrity or some person that has done incredible work.

that is also very smart and adorable. It has the same grace as any other platinum jewelry but the difference lie in the type of material that has been used in the designing of that jewelry. As the jewelry piece has pure amount of platinum more expensive it will be. Platinum jewelry has been in fashion from a very long time and will remain in fashion because of its uniqueness that attracts everyone towards it. Many jewelry designers only work on platinum jewelry and are much renowned for making some marvelous masterpieces.

Platinum jewelry is considered to be very elegant and exclusive when compared to any other type of jewelry. Its natural colour is so attractive that it needs no extra finish or painting it. Once a professional jewelry maker work on platinum jewelry and finishes the product then it is a very fine piece of jewelry. This is the only reason that platinum jewelry is not so common and it is seen in special classes of society. This is not the case that platinum jewelry is not at all affordable but the common people are not so interested in buying it. People with special taste for jewelry like platinum jewelry and they also tell their jewelry designers that what type of jewelry piece they want. Platinum jewelry is not designed alone it is also designed by adding some other precious metals like white gold or silver to add up some extra beauty. This is done to lower the cost of platinum jewelry as other precious metals are cheaper then platinum. Also these metals provide some extra glow and attraction to platinum jewelry. The combination of platinum jewelry and diamonds is thought to be the best combination in jewelry. Whenever platinum is ornamented with the help of diamonds its grace is amazing and it is so eye catching that people cannot resist its beauty. The cost of these types of jewelry is also very high but when it comes to getting something you like, then everyone is ready to spend money. Cheaper platinum jewelry is also designed FOCUS of Virginia 2015 51

B

yron Lars started designing under his own label in 1991 with a small collection of sportswear focusing on what Lars refers to as “twisted American classics.” Taking inspiration from such unlikely sources as his grandfather ’s hunting jacket, Byron crossbreeds it with a “Dior New Look” proportion to create a Dutchess of Windsor meets Field and Stream hybrid. Juxtapositions such as above, or as in taking a men’s cotton dress shirt and then distorting it to the point of resembling a Dorothy Lamour sarong, have become Byron Lars’ trademark. “When edgy fashion is steeped in something familiar, it becomes far less alienating to the consuming public,” says Lars. After only his second season in business, Women’s Wear Daily hailed Byron as “Rookie of the Year.” His line was immediately snapped up by such prestigious retailers as Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s as well as one hundred other specialty stores throughout the U.S. along with some distribution in the U.K. and France. “I saw it a few days ago and was blown out of the water,” exclaims Kal Ruttenstein, senior vice president and fashion director of Bloomingdale’s referring to the premier fall collection of Lars. “He has the freshest point of view of all the young American designers.”

Byron’s range of designs became most apparent in his Seventh on Sixth runway presentations in which he created accessories as mere fashion show props, only to attract the attention of licensees in handbags, furs and hats. His notoriety also led to his designing a limited edition of designer Barbie dolls for Mattel. By the contractual end of his licensees, Byron chose to direct his energy away from the designer collection and focus on a contemporary line and pricing structure. “I wanted it to be more about the clothes and less about the ‘hype’,” says Lars. This redirection was the beginning of “Byron Lars Beauty Mark.” Initially a cotton Lycra shirting based offering, Beauty Mark took its cue from the shirts and shirt dresses of the previous collection that put the designer on the map (only this time, without the lofty price point). Since its inception, Beauty Mark has enjoyed over nine years of success and is now expanding its product line to include knits, sportswear and dresses in addition to the chic and sexy shirts for which the line is highly sought after.

Micah White

"Bam Bamm"

By Natalie Pita

at the age of twenty, and his comedy career was about to kick into full swing when Ricky Smiley ran a Comedy Night at local lounge in Fairfield, Alabama. Micah’s roommate dared him to go onstage and he gladly accepted, asking Ricky to let him perform. After working on his act for nearly a week, Micah gave his first comedy show and experienced the same response and feelings he remembered from the school speech. That night after he walked off stage he knew he would be doing comedy for the rest of his life. There was no doubt; there was nothing else to be said, there was nothing else to do—he had found his purpose and there was no turning back. But it’s not a surprise to anyone in his family or anyone that knew him because he has been making family and friends laugh since the age of five; even when it came time to disciplining him it was hard to do because he would have them so busy laughing that they would forget about what he did wrong. His comedy career continued with local gigs, and he spent most of his time traveling between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Alabama to perform. Then it happened. That first definitive moment of whether he was serious about becoming a comedian or not came when he got booed while performing on stage. The only thing he kept thinking about was that one day people are going to realize who they booed, so he returned to working on and perfecting his craft and skill. His grandmother recalls a moment when she brought him home a kitten and he named the kitten ding-a-ling, and he called up the radio station to wish his ding-a-ling a happy birthday, which became one of the funniest skits written and added to his live shows. Focus Magazine finally got a chance to talk with who we think will become one of the funniest men on the planet, and we believe his name will become synonymous with the world of comedy. Micah “Bam Bamm” White has all the right ingredients when it comes to being on stage, whether it’s hosting a show or making an audience laugh out of their seats. But it wasn’t always this way. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama and being raised by his grandmother, Micah was faced with difficult challenges as a child. He didn’t have a close relationship with his mother, mainly due to her drug addiction. After going several years without seeing her as a young boy, he began to turn his attention to focus on school and music. During his elementary school years his teachers were looking for a student to do the Martin Luther King “I have a dream” speech, and he was chosen due to his personality and “reverend” voice. He practiced the speech constantly for two to three weeks, but even then speaking in front of an audience didn’t come easy for Micah. When it came time for the assembly, dressed in his best suit, Micah refused to take the stage. The teachers then made a deal with him that he can perform the speech standing behind the curtains so no one could see him and he didn’t have to worry about being nervous. Micah agreed to this deal, yet he never anticipated the response he was about to receive from the assembly of his peers. After the speech, he appeared from behind the curtains to take his bow and the audience applauded even louder once they saw that it was him. He had no idea that the feelings he had of being on stage then would change his life. During his middle school years, Micah loved music and after embracing his fears he became part of a rap group with some of his friends, and later he joined a youth gospel choir as a vocalist. His mischievous ways kept things very interesting and small amounts of trouble seemed to continue to follow him as a result of residual feelings regarding his mother. But all of that was about to change 58 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

In order to really make an impact on the success of his career, Micah decided that he needed to be where it was happening. Because one can only do so much in Alabama, he packed his bags and moved to Los Angeles, California where he began performing each night and building a name and reputation for himself as an up-and-coming comedian. However, soon things became a little difficult and by the time he turned twenty-one he received a call to come and stay with his father who lived in Richmond, Virginia. He jumped at the opportunity to build a relationship with his father, in a way to make up for not having a relationship with his mother. Micah “Bam Bamm” White didn’t waste any time learning the city and getting back on stage. His first comedy gig was at the Slip at Shockhoe Bottom where he spent the next five years producing Comedy Night. He also started coaching girls’ volleyball at Virginia State University and then James River High School. Volleyball was a sport he had played in high school, solely because his crush, Tracy Pruitt, was on the team. As a coach at James River, Micah had a record of 134-27. He helped over 40 girls get into college. Volleyball happened to be the sport that helped him embrace his family values and taught him the importance of accountably and being a man of his word, and he began to forge a strong business relationship with the Hippodrome Theatre, which gave him the platform to start his own business — RVA Has Talent, a business plan he had written 10 years prior. His goal was to combine local entertainers and local non-profits, increasing the value and raising awareness at the same time. In addition to building a successful comedy career and operating his own business, Micah has a 13-year-old daughter, Nya, who he truly loves and adores and wants her to know that she means everything to him. He puts aside his own difficulties and focuses on the legacy he wants to leave behind: something that continues for the good of mankind, creates harmony and makes the world laugh.

Simple Tips

Keep Clutter at Bay

FAMILY FEATURES

If yours is like the average American household, you have amassed a collection of unorganized stuff, tucked away in piles or behind closed doors to deal with “later.” Establishing good organization habits and creating proper storage areas can transform that chaos now and set the stage for less mess in the future. Following are some simple tips to help make your apartment or home clutter free, and get you started with some new habits to keep disorganization at bay. 1. Don’t buy things you don’t need. Living clutter free gives you a better perspective of what you have, so you don’t make unnecessary purchases, which can be costly and only add to the clutter in your home. Be wary of accumulating “aspirational clutter” — things you plan to use someday, but never quite get around to using. Though tempting, also avoid freebies and gifts with purchase that you don’t really need. Remember, clutter creates more clutter. 2. Create zones. In other words, make a space for everything. Your entryway can become a repository, so sort mail immediately (recycle what you don’t need), hang coats rather than draping them on available furniture and use a shoe bin or tray to organize pairs you wear frequently. 60 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

In the bedroom closet, use vertical space to create additional storage with organizing units. Wood organizers such as ClosetMaid Impressions™ offer an attractive way to de-clutter with kits and add-on pieces that let you create a customized storage system for your personal needs. A second shoe rack in the closet helps organize shoes you wear less often. In the living room, create specific storage spaces for remotes, blankets, gaming equipment and other items using storage bins and containers that complement your décor. 3. Reset yourself. Every night before you turn in, take a few moments to put things where they belong. This gives you a fresh, stress-free start in the morning and peace of mind knowing where everything you need is located. 4. Turn clutter into cash. Motivate yourself to de-clutter by making money on your unused and unwanted possessions. You can sell gently used clothing to local consignment shops, or donate to Goodwill, Salvation Army or another nonprofit organization. Remember to get a donation receipt, because you may be able to take a tax deduction.

Art

meets

With the partnership between Bugatti and the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM) the renowned manufacturer emphasizes the ability in creating pieces of automotive art. The “L’Or Blanc” sits silently in the courtyard of the world famous Setai Hotel. A unique version of a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport is the world’s first motor car to wear the finest porcelain on its body, as well as in its cabin. It captivates with an abstract exterior design. The “L’Or Blanc” is the world’s first automobile to be equipped with porcelain, and the development team invested a lot of effort to guarantee that each item is capable of performing in every driving situation in the most powerful car on the market. Before their application to the car, the porcelain elements were extensively examined in regard to automotive safety and quality to optimally protect the passengers in case of an accident. “Porcelain is one of the strongest materials but the grade of quality depends significantly on the excellence of the manufacturing process. We had to assure that the inlays perfectly fit to the filler caps, it has been a challenge for us to exactly calculate the shrinkage of porcelain,” explains Thomas Wenzel, Head of Design at KPM. Several times we stop, take a step to the left and to the right; they bend down and up again, looking intensely at the Grand Sport from different angles. Analyzing the reflections of light on the car’s body before we take a step back for a moment to get an overall impression. Thin blue lines flow over the bright white exterior of the fastest convertible in the world. It feels like visiting the atelier of an American pop-art artist. The creation bears the name “L’Or Blanc.” It represents an automobile that redefines the art of design. If you look at it through the eyes of a designer, you will recognize that it is the reflection of the studio lights on the body that attracts their interest. Positioned beneath a special light, the car is set in an ideal environment that provides an excellent image of the reflections. The studio light is reflected on the invisible edges between the body

shapes of the Grand Sport. In numerous stages each reflection line is translated by Bugatti’s designers onto the car body that has been pre-painted in a vibrant white tone. They use a precision tape made of Japanese soft tissue that can be easily torn off by hand. It adheres perfectly to sulphur-containing plasticine. By stretching them to a certain degree, these tapes are “lined” in pieces up to five meters long across the whole exterior of the car. “At first, it seems to be an unusual idea to use porcelain in a car, especially in the world’s fastest convertible,” comments Dr. Stefan Brungs, Director of Sales and Marketing at Bugatti Automobiles. “But this is what Bugatti stands for: the realization of exceptional ideas whilst striving for the utmost in quality and aesthetics. This allows us to continue Ettore Bugatti’s heritage, who himself loved to experiment with new materials.” Besides the signed porcelain inlays on the sides of the center console, an intarsia made of finest porcelain is fixed to the rear panel between the seats. Similar to the exterior porcelain elements this item carries the relief of the famous elephant in an upright standing position that has been created by sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti. His brother Ettore had used the original draft to cast the radiator mascot for the Bugatti Royale. This elephant is a synonym for the brand still today. Embedded in the top of the center console, there is a fine porcelain dish with edges finished in an exclusive diamond polishing - a technique that has been applied by the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin for the very first time. The precious dish can be removed and is part of a picnic set that was exclusively designed by KPM for the Bugatti car. The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport “L’Or Blanc”, is a one-of-a-kind creation. Nevertheless, the partnership is supposed to be continued, and Bugatti’s designers received a lot of inspiration from porcelain painting offering a variety of new opportunities for the design.

3/4 pound red beets (3 medium sized), scrubbed 1 large bulb fennel, trimmed, and cut into 1 inch chunks 1 medium onion, roughly chopped 2 Tbsp olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 large bunch cavolo nero (Tuscan kale), washed, tough stems removed, roughly chopped into 1 inch pieces 1/3 cup smoked almonds, chopped Shaved Parmesan (optional)

Dressing:

1/3 of a 14 oz. package House Foods Premium or Organic Tofu Soft 3 anchovies (packed in oil) Juice of 1 lemon 1 clove garlic, peeled 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Wrap each beet in foil and place on sheet tray and roast for 25 minutes. Meanwhile, toss fennel and onion in a small bowl with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Add to the sheet tray with the beets after they have roasted for 25 minutes. Continue roasting fennel and beets for 30 minutes more. Then open up the foil packets to let beets cool, rub off the skins of the beets using a paper towel and chop into bite size pieces. Add the tofu, anchovies, lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper to a blender and blend until smooth. Combine the kale and roasted beets, fennel, and onion to a large bowl and drizzle with the dressing. Toss to thoroughly coat. Garnish with smoked almonds and shaved Parmesan.

Directions

Spray a 9 inch tart pan with removable bottom with non stick spray. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and vanilla bean seeds. Drizzle in the olive oil and stir it in with a wooden spoon, then drizzle in the water, and stir in together until lumpy. Use your hands and knead the dough until it just comes together as a ball in the bowl. Dust your work surface lightly with flour and dust a rolling pin. Roll out the dough 1 inch bigger than a 9- inch tart pan. Move the dough to the tart pan and press evenly into the pan. Prick the bottom with a fork and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Place chilled tart shell on a rimmed baking sheet and place in the oven to bake for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, add the tofu, sugar, lemon juice, flour, baking powder, and salt to the bowl of a food processor and blend until smooth. Remove tart dough from oven and carefully pour the filling into the shell. Place tart back into the oven and bake for 45 minutes, until just the center of the tart is still wiggly when gently shakened. Remove from oven and let cool completely. The filling will deflate slightly as it cools. Sprinkle lightly with confectioners’ sugar before serving, if desired.

Healthy Eating

FAMILY FEATURES

Looking for creative ways to get your family to eat healthier? Registered dietitian nutritionist and mom of three, Frances LargemanRoth, finds inspiration from the color spectrum, creating vividlyhued homemade culinary creations that encourage her children to explore new foods while incorporating good nutrition. “When planning meals and snacks, include the colors of the rainbow – like vitamin C-rich mango or protein-filled red lentils. This is an easy way to entice kids to eat more fruits and vegetables while eliminating the need to overthink vitamin and mineral intakes,” said Largeman-Roth. “The whole family benefits from bringing more colorful foods to the kitchen table. Replacing processed foods with fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will automatically cut calories and saturated fat while increasing fiber and antioxidants.” As a leading healthy cooking expert, Largeman-Roth shares her personal family stories, tips, and recipes for colorful healthy eating in her newest cookbook “Eating in Color: Delicious, Healthy Recipes for You and Your Family.” And mango is one of her go-to fruits for color-infused meals and snacks. “My family loves the tropical flavor of mango and its vibrant orange color. And as a nutritionist, I love that one serving of mango delivers 100% of your daily vitamin C.”

Mangos are superfruits bursting with antioxidants and more than 20 different vitamins and minerals. One cup of mango is 100 calories and a good source of fiber, which aids in digestion and the management of weight, and an excellent source of vitamin A which plays a role in bone growth. To select a mango at the grocery store, squeeze gently to judge ripeness. If the mango has a slight give, it’s ripe and ready to eat. If it’s too firm, let it ripen on your kitchen counter for a few days at room temperature. Don’t judge a mango’s ripeness by its color. The red blush you’ll see on some varieties is simply a characteristic of the variety. Get your family on its way to more colorful, nutritious eating with these tips from Frances: 1. Eat color often. Pack antioxidant-rich colorful fruits and vegetables into every meal and snack. 2. Don’t eat monochrome. It’s easy to get into a routine and just start eating kale salads every day. Kale is great for you, but it’s not going to meet all your nutrient needs. 3. Go beyond your comfort zone. When shopping, seek out new fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein sources to try. And have your kids help with grocery selections!

high amounts of flavonoids, in particular catechins, which are powerful antioxidants. We need antioxidants in our diet because they help us to fight the effects of aging. They do this by reducing the number of free radicals in the bloodstream, elements that increase oxidation, and thus contribute to heart disease and other health problems. Catechins also stimulate the production of endorphins, which are the brain chemicals that enable us to feel good and experience pleasure and a sense of well-being, and serotonin, which is the body's own natural antidepressant. So yes, all those stories you read about in the press that claim that popping a bite of chocolate can possibly do more for your sense of well-being than popping a Valium may be correct. The flavonoids in dark chocolate also help to absorb ultraviolet light, and thus protect the skin, increase the blood flow to it, and keep it hydrated. Dark chocolate has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) levels by up to 10 percent. A recent British study showed that those who ate 7.5 grams of dark chocolate daily reduced their risk of heart attack and stroke by 39%, compared to those who ate .7 grams. In this study, more chocolate was actually better. This article is sounding better by the minute, right? Great. So I can binge on chocolate as much as I want, right? Uh…no. Sorry. Chocolate is still full of calories, and eating too much of it will still make you fat. In most of the research studies proving the benefits of dark chocolate, the amount of chocolate consumed by the test subjects per day was the size of one Hershey's Kiss.

Benefits of Dark

Chocolate

By Juliette Siegfried

What's that you say? Chocolate, mentioned in an article on a health-conscious website, and touted as if it has actual benefits for one's health? Surely the Millennium is upon us. It's true. Chocophiles (lovers of chocolate) have reason to rejoice. According to recent research, at least some forms of chocolate (which we chocophiles consider the only "true" chocolate anyway) are actually good for you. One such study revealed that people who ate a small amount of dark chocolate daily were able to significantly reduce their blood pressure – by 5 points systolic pressure and 2 points diastolic pressure – while control groups who ate similar amounts of milk chocolate or white chocolate did not. It's not magic... it only sounds like magic Chocolate is, after all, a plant substance, related to and thus sharing the nutritional benefits of other dark vegetables. One of these benefits is the presence in dark chocolate (again, in dark or pure chocolate, not in milk chocolate or white chocolate) of 74 FOCUS of Virginia 2015

So, as with many things that are good for us, when it comes to chocolate, there is a point of diminishing returns – more does not mean better. Remember that one 100 gram bar of chocolate contains about 500 calories, and eating that much would seriously impact most people's attempts to either lose weight or keep it at a sensible level. If you were to add a full bar of chocolate to your diet, you'd have to balance those 500 added calories by cutting out something else.

But this is still good news And, as "health news" goes, refreshing. Instead of being told that something we love to eat or drink is bad for us, we learn that something we enjoy is good for us. If eaten in moderation. If part of you still feels guilty over adding one small piece of dark chocolate to your diet, think of it as medicine, not a guilty pleasure. Like other forms of medicine, a little goes a long way and produces beneficial results, and too much can produce detrimental results. So rejoice that one of nature's sweet treats turns out to actually be good for us, but don't overdo it. Don't replace other foods in your already balanced diet with chocolate. Just add a little dark chocolate to that diet. Think of it as medicine that actually tastes good, gives you more energy and boosts your happiness levels, and that you can buy in almost any shop, as opposed to having to go to a pharmacy or health food store.
