EDITOR'S LETTER “Every great love starts with a great story...” - Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook Both of my maternal grandparents passed away last fall. As though it was their final act on this earth, my grandparents’ passing served to bring together all of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to celebrate their lives. It was in reminiscing the many wonderful years we had spent with them that my family uncovered a truly great love story—one that began more than 70 years ago. As we sorted through every cabinet and closet of their home, we stumbled upon a spiral-bound notebook that our grandfather had given to our grandmother on her 80th birthday. On the cover, he pasted individual letters that spelled the message: Thank You With All My Heart. Inside the notebook he had written our grandmother, his wife, a love letter. His letter was an ode to a phenomenal woman and his words expressed admiration and gratitude. Recounting their experiences throughout their 64 years as husband and wife, he wrote about her loyalty, friendship, hard work, passion, generosity, love, ability to rise above in hardship, and so much more. Just shy of thirty, I feel completely blessed to be a descendent of their romance. And more recently, I've even found myself hoping that I, too, will someday have a 70-year love story to share with my family. Through the sweet anecdotes we tell and ideas we share in Flutter, we hope that we can help inspire a lifetime of legendary love for you, our readers: your very own Notebook romance. With the above in mind I bring you to this edition of Flutter: our annual Engagement Issue. The arrival of “engagement season” always sweeps us off our feet! The stories, the photos, the excited brides-to-be… It’s the unofficial kickoff to a new year, new trends, and all kinds of celebrated love. And we’ve got absolutely stunning details to help inspire your very own great story from the start. Ring in your style [page 25], land your dream backdrop [page 80], gather expert tips + tricks, and, of course, set your hearts aflutter as you flip through every page. Here's to great love stories, friends!

My grandparents, George and Setta Nazarethian

confetti wishes Guests were greeted at the ceremony with a confetti bar where they were asked to fill a bag with love and wishes to toss on the newlyweds as they took their first steps as Mr. + Mrs. The bar was stocked with dried rose buds, rose petals, lavender seeds, basil leaves, rosemary, and biodegradable heart-shaped confetti.

the key to happily ever after On the back of each guest’s seating card was space to leave words of wisdom for the newlyweds. What’s the best advice they received? “Try to go to bed at the same time. Snuggle up and spend a few moments before bedtime to talk to each other and hear how each other's day went. It's simple yet really makes us feel so much closer.”

Love this idea? The key to finding all the materials is on Etsy.

Ring In Your Style Photography by Kristen Beinke

"What ring will sing to your heart? jewelry designer sofia kaman has put together her top 10 tips for honing in on your dream ring. 12

define your personal sense of style

consider your lifestyle

Your rings should reflect who you are! Are you a minimalist who appreciates natural, understated beauty? A vintage romantic with a flair for a touch of drama? Or, do you appreciate modern shapes and clean, smooth textures?

If you have a profession where you work with your hands (medical professional, artist, etc.) choosing a ring with a low profile and bezel might fit in best, rather than something extremely high set with prongs. If you know you are hard on your jewelry but you love delicate vintage pieces, that might possibly require extra care, think about choosing a newly made ring that has a vintage feel. Choosing a ring that fits into your life best will most likely give you the most longevity and happiness along the way.

band together

Think about if and how you’d like to pair your ring with a wedding band. Do you prefer an evenly stacked set? Do you mind if the band doesn’t sit flush against the engagement ring? Or maybe you would consider wearing your engagement and wedding band on different hands?

sentimental value

Do you wear yellow gold all the time? Deciding you want to try rose gold for your engagement ring might not be the best idea if the ring doesn’t pair well with all your other favorites.

Consider if you or your partner have a family heirloom that could be passed on or repurposed in some way. Sometimes a dated style may possess a beautiful diamond that could be re-set in a new design, giving it new life and creating a beautiful way to pay homage to family lineage.

go green

sparkle factor!

consider your current jewelry wardrobe

Ethical and environmentally sound gem and metal sourcing are big considerations for many people. Definitely check whether your favorite jewelry store provides conflict-free diamonds and works with suppliers who abide by the Kimberley Process. If diamonds are not your best friend for ethical reasons, consider colored stones. Ask where the stones are mined from and inform yourself on the types of mining practices of that region. Finally, if your goal is to create as little environmental impact as possible, look into finding a diamond that’s not been newly mined, through a company such as Avilan, and consider using recycled metals as well.

Are you a diamond diva or an alternative gem type of gal? The type, quality and size center stone contributes the most to BOTH cost and style of your ring. If you truly enjoy sparkle, a traditional round cut brilliant colorless diamond is going to give you the look you want. If you are more interested in having something with a more modest brilliance, consider a rose cut, rustic diamond or even an alternative gem like sapphire or ruby… For the guys, a note about colored stones: if you are considering a colored stone, be sure that she not only loves the color, but that she is comfortable wearing it every day!

prioritize your budget

There are many ways to create or select a beautiful ring by choosing the elements of style in a smart way. If you know you MUST have a two-carat diamond, because anything smaller just looks “tiny” on your long fingers, then consider a beautiful champagne shade instead of completely colorless, or perhaps think about a halo design in the same color as your center stone to create a larger look. Both of these changes will typically give you a larger impact for your money. Don’t think you’ll be a diamond expert overnight by reading everything online; also consult with a trusted diamond or jewelry professional to help guide you in making the smartest choices to get the best value for your investment! a work in progress…

Sometimes that dream ring is really that- a distant dream! Whatever your situation may be, understanding that the greater idea in marriage is to be together for the duration, can be helpful. There will always be room for upgrades, times will change, and your life together will change. Don’t forget that your ring can change too! “the gumball ring”

Everyone loves a great proposal story that starts with “a gumball ring.” Designing or picking an engagement ring together can be a romantic process and ensure that everyone is happy with the outcome. And most of all, have fun with it! What ring will sing to your heart? Visit www. sofiakaman.com this Feburary to “Discover Your Wedding Style” with their virtual quiz. a serendipitous love story

You know… guy meets girl, girl gives guy her number on back of business card, they meet up, the timing is off, they go separate ways. Fast forward one-and-a-half years later, guy finds business card. It’s fate! Guy contacts girl, they agree to meet on a whim, and the rest is history. Yes, this really did happen. This is the love story of Jaimie and Andrew.

One little act in your life can lead to so much more! We still have that business card that helped us find each other…again. - the bride

a neutral agreement

The entire event was layered from top to bottom with dreamy, salt-kissed neutral tones of white, cream, beige, brown, and bronze. The serene absence of color was enough to take your breath away.

bouquet breakdown

Jaimie’s bouquet took the spotlight as the only fresh floral element of the event, consisting of simple white roses with a variety of textural foliage from the area.

suite texture

Wedding designer, Lisa Vorce, worked with A Day in May Design to craft a cultural invitation suite using a traditional Mexican tree bark paper called Amate. Vorce took it one step further seeking out a local Riviera Mayan calligrapher who created the custom calligraphy. Absolute perfection! Fun fact: Amate paper was extensively produced and used for both communication, records and ritual during the Aztec Empire. We just swoon over the use of this cultural reference.

Be Prepared to Ask:

Where can I view your most up-to-date albums and slideshows?

Do you have social media accounts I can follow?

What are your rates and what do they include?

Things to consider: albums, prints vs. images on a disk, amount of coverage...

Be Prepared to Ask:

Before we meet, can you email me a breakdown of your services so I can see if we're a good fit?

What are your rates and what do they include?

Where are you based and do you travel?

Have you worked at our desired venue(s) before?

Do you work with an assistant or second shooter? Second shooters are often an additional charge.

What does hiring you look like throughout the process and on the wedding weekend?

Have you shot a wedding at my desired venue(s) before?

What do you require to secure you for our date?

What format do you shoot? Film or digital?

What is your turnaround time?

What is your guest count? He / she will know if the venue you have in mind will accommodate that.

What is your date, location, time of ceremony and reception?

Be Prepared to Answer:

Do you have an idea about any of your decor? I.E. Colors, flowers, overall look and feel...

How many hours of coverage are you wanting?

Do you have someone to marry you?

What is your guest count?

Will you send out save-the-dates in addition to your invitations?

How many, on each side, are in your bridal party?

How large are your family photos going to be? I.E. how many people on each side?

Are you interested in a big band for your reception? At this point, be prepared to discuss ceremony and cocktail music as well.

Will you be including any traditional elements?

After your initial call and in-person meeting, you both should have a good idea of direction and how things will get started.

Are you considering an engagement session?

Do the bride and groom plan on seeing each other prior to the ceremony?

What is the overall look of your wedding? Photographers like to get a picture of what their clients are envisioning.

FA S H ION TO TABL E with Jenny Bernheim of Margo & Me Photography by Paige Jones

Sophie Elkus, Lauren Shane, Ashley Fultz, Marta Pozzan, Jenny Berheim, Annabelle Fleur, Mara Ferreira, Nikki DeRoest 42

We’re here with stylish inspiration to outfit your next gathering from head to toe. It’s a bit of bespoke entertaining as influenced by the feminine fashion blogger of Margo & Me. Flip through for tasty tidbits, fancy embellishments, and floral silhouettes from our recent garden party with Jenny and her fellow fashionistas.

#fashiontotable for #fluttermagazine

About Jenny

Jenny Bernheim is an LA-based fashion blogger who thrives on exploring her stylistic cravings; an uber feminine, ever-evolving mix of sophisticated, playful and chic. Who’s Margo? Her sweet and sassy French Bulldog you’re about to swoon over. P.S. Jenny's currently engaged! Be sure to follow her feed for stylish wedding bits + tips.

SETTING THE SCENE

The Venue

The party was held at the historic Lombardi House in Hollywood. The newly remodeled digs offer up four private suites, a charming refurbished barn, and a gorgeous garden fit for fancy alfresco dining.

Backdrop Benefits

Spruce up any space with a decorative tapestry or fabric. We sourced our floral print from downtown LA’s fashion district where one can get lost in a textile frenzy.

Tabletop Trends to Try

• Ribbon-wrapped candles • Sheer cotton linens that allow the textures of the table to shine through • Pretty place settings from the Ark, Flowerwild’s new rental company that’s launching this year. Keep your eyes peeled!

Personalized Place Settings

“Each of my girlfriends love fashion as much as I do so tying in my love for gold jewelry is something I knew they would appreciate. I incorporated these darling personalized nameplate bracelets by Junghwa into each place setting by clasping it around the napkins." - Jenny

Couture (Ice Cream) Cake

Raspberry filling inside of a cake has always been my absolute favorite guilty pleasure! We called on Whoa Nelly Catering to create a dessert incorporating this, but with an updated element. I love the new trend of naked cakes so this was a great creative twist that I was excited to present my guests with. Best part... it's an ice cream cake! - Jenny

La Vie En Fashion Jenny is well-seasoned in all things Paris. It was a no-brainer to put a French twist into her family-style menu that included delectable small bites, assorted tartines and mini desserts.

Signature Sips Guests were welcomed with sparkling French 75s. This signature sip is a piece of cake for any hostess to shake up. French 75 3 tbsp Gin, Ÿ cup champagne/sparkling wine, 1 ½ tbsp fresh lemon juice, 1 tbsp simple syrup, 1 lemon, 1 ice cube, 1 sugar cube In a cocktail shaker combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Add ice and shake. Strain into a glass and top with champagne. Curl a lemon peel and garnish your drink with a twist!

Margo & Me Style Musings Color Theory Rich tones like raspberry, forest green, and royal blue pair beautifully with softer undertones like blushes, french blues, and lavenders. I love how the dress print really sets the mood for creating this soft and feminine, yet elegantly bold, setting. Floral Etiquette My favorite part of the bloomy look this winter is that it's taken on a darker mood. Bright poppy colors are mixed with deep rich tones to create a hyper-hued floral look. If you're wearing a bold floral print on the bottom, balance out the look by pairing your top half with a solid tone from the skirt, black or white.

Pretty in Print

Being a girly girl at heart, I love nothing more than the feminine side of dressing. This dress, by Keepsake, inspired the floral motif throughout the party decor.

DR. KRISTI

Dr. Kristi Wrightson, along with our staff of professionals are committed to you in achieving your most optimal health. We have many specialized programs that allow you to obtain your balance of wellness. Some of our services include: Nutritional IV Therapy, Women's Health and Hormones, Detox Programs, Body Contouring, Anti-Aging Treatments, and Chronic Disease Management.

how do i avoid having a break-out on my wedding day? Many a bride fears waking up “the morning of ” with a big pimple on her face. You can airbrush the photos but not the real thing! Although there is no way to guarantee you won’t have acne on your big day, there are some simple things to do to prevent breakouts for your wedding day (and every day).

Two main factors that play into those unsightly blemishes: stress and food. Stress can actually cause unwanted fluctuations in all your hormones. These imbalances can show up as pimples, fatigue, PMS and even excess belly fat. Use a healthy combination of Evening Primrose Oil, flaxseed and chamomile tea to keep your stress levels down AND help to balance your hormones.

Another essential nutrient is glutathione. Glutathione is the master antioxidant and helps to clear toxins from the liver and tissues resulting in brighter skin and shinier hair. You can increase the amount of glutathione in the body by taking an oral vitamin C. As well, you can have intravenous glutathione “drips” for a quick, efficient cleanse.

Ditching the junk food and getting 5 daily servings of vegetables, 2 servings of fruit and at least 3 servings of lean protein will also help reduce the chance of pimples. Eliminating trigger foods such as chocolate, sugar and fried fare will go a long way to keeping your face beautiful.

how can i lose weight and look my best in my dress?

i want my skin & hair to be beautiful on my wedding day. what can i do? Instead of rubbing all kinds of “promising” products on your skin, create beautiful skin from the inside out. Gorgeous skin and hair are a reflection of nourished cells and those cells need Omega 3 essential fatty acids – the ones found in wild fish and fish oil supplements. Vitamins C, A, B and E are foundational nutrients essential for radiant skin and you can easily get them through your diet. Try eating at least one citrus fruit plus a handful of almonds each day to feed your cells. As well, taking a good B complex supplement twice per day can give you that magical glow all year round. It can help with your energy too!

With all the busy-ness of preparing for your wedding, it's often hard to find time for yourself. Losing that last 10 pounds or creating a smoother-looking line is easier than you may think. Eating a well-balanced, healthy diet combined with exercise is the foundation of any weight loss journey, but there are often obstacles to optimizing weight. Hormonal imbalances can cause low metabolism and weight gain. If you know that your hormones are in check and you just can’t lose that last bit of weight there are non-invasive options available. While it can be difficult to reduce the size of fat cells in your “problem areas”, you don’t need to turn to expensive and painful surgeries. The Zerona is a non-invasive alternative to liposuction or other surgeries. The treatments are completely painless and there is no recovery time. After 12 treatments most patients lose an average of 5-10 total body inches. ®

Your Picture Perfect Engagement Style Photography by Paige Jones (www.paigejones.co)

3. Let your guard down

o you’re engaged. Now it’s time for you and your beau to capture your love on camera with professional engagement photos. These photos are memories that will last a lifetime and can be used for everything from your wedding website, to your save-the-dates, to the wedding day decor.

Don't put unnecessary pressure on yourselves. This is about having fun and making a special memory. Portrait photography can feel unnatural for some people but my advice to these folks would be, just have fun with it! The more you can relax and be natural, the better your pictures will represent who you are.

What should you wear? Where’s the best location to shoot? We’d hate for these frequently asked questions to pose a problem. Lucky for us, Atlanta-based wedding photographer, Paige Jones, shares her top five tips on how to snap the most picture perfect engagement photos.

4. Beautiful photography is about light and location Photographers are constantly looking for the best locations and the best light to put you in. If they ask you to plan your shoot at sunset an hour away, there's a good reason why. Be willing to work with your photographer on light and location for the most epic pictures.

1. Dress weather appropriate

Nothing is worse than feeling uncomfortable on your engagement shoot. If it's cold, bundle up in a cute scarf and cozy sweater. If it's the height of summer, put on your favorite sundress or breezy tank-top. Forcing a favorite outfit that might not match the weather will lead to poor results. Be comfortable in your clothes, so you look comfortable in your photos.

5. Choose the right photographer Do your research and find the photographer that not only jives with your personality, but also one that produces work that you are drawn to. If you relate more to a candid, off-moment style then make sure that's the kind of work your photographer is putting out there. If you'd prefer film, find a film photographer. If you like your photos to be a bit more moody, make sure your photographer's portfolio represents that because what you see is what you'll get. There are many different styles of photography, and doing your research and figuring out what style you like is the first step in getting photography that you'll love forever.

2. Have an experience

Think of something of that is unique to who you are as a couple. If you love cooking together, then start your session in the kitchen preparing your favorite meal. If camping is your weekend hobby, then have your photographer come to your campsite for a few hours. Your photos will be more meaningful if they represent who you are and the things you love. 58

Wardrobe Tips Stay away from bold patterns and logos as they tend to be distracting. Complimentary colors always win!

(ex: he wears green-ish pants while you rock a light pink top)

Neutrals are your friend. Plus, then you can throw in a pop of color with a bold necklace or a fun shoe. Avoid matching. The goal is to be yourself, so unless you like to match on a day-to-day basis, you won't look back on that decision with good feelings.

It IS possible and medically proven to be safe with The Zerona速, the only FDA-approved lowlevel laser for reducing the size of fat cells. Zerona works by collapsing fat cells. Once the cells are collapsed the contents (stored fat) leak out into your interstitial fluid and is flushed out by your lymphatic system, eliminated from your body. The fat cells shrink as well as your waistline! Our patients, on average, experience a 5-inch total reduction over 12 months and see a reduction in cholesterol levels, inflammation, stretch marks, and cellulite. Maid

Amassing a gaggle of bridesmaid dresses is a right of passage. Let’s face it: It’s unlikely a bride is going to have her bridesmaids rewear a gown from wedding’s past — but, that doesn’t mean you can’t redress it. Instead of letting your personal bridal collection die in the back of the closet, recycle them with a twist. Using a little out-of-the-box accessorizing, you can transform that long chiffon or midi wrap dress into a wearable outfit. We called in a few style experts (who hail from 100 Layer Cake, Inspired By This and Casa de Perrin) to demonstrate how you can give that collection a new thread on life.

looking to add a little personality to your wedding portraits? here’s an idea that’s packed with pretty! newlyweds naomi + chris enlisted kelly nicoletto moore of type a society to style an intimate portrait session on their wedding day which included their flowers and a small tablescape flowing with some of their favorite natural elements.

Location: La Jolla Shores, California

be prepared to swoon!

As busy D.C. law firm attorneys, Chris and I relish every (rare) opportunity to leave the city and surround ourselves with outdoor beauty. We wouldn’t pass up any opportunity to wade in ocean surf or sink our toes in soft sand. We wanted to be in a place where flip-flops and linen meets casual, rustic elegance. -The Bride

tabletop bits + tips

building off of the environment

We wanted to showcase the natural essence of things you would find or collect while walking along the beach: such as moonstone rocks, shells and small pieces of driftwood.

The tablescape became a beautiful extension of the rolling waves behind it with a flowing runner of air plants, rocks, mussel shells and painted manzanita to inspire an element of coral. Place settings were placed on top of slate squares and detailed with hand torn flags as placecards.

a sea of color The color palette was inspired by the natural tones of the coastline:

greens, slate, sand, gray

and a

hint of blue.

Julie Song Ink crafted an invitation suite which was the icing on the cake with beautiful watercolor washes, watercolor calligraphy, and rsvp cards shaped as rocks.

bouquet breakdown

Naomi carried a wispy and flowing bouquet of garden roses, ranunculus, sweet peas, jasmine, anemones, and greens that were foraged from around the beach and tied up with the most lovely hand-dyed ribbon. See how to make your own on the following page.

diy hand-dyed ribbon Photography by Kristen Beinke

What You’ll Need: Rit Dye Separate Mixing Bowls Per Color Wooden Spools - Raw Silk Scissors - Gloves - Twine - Clothespins Step One: Cut ribbons from your fabric in any width and length you choose. Mix it up for a variety. For an imperfect frayed edge, make a small cut into one end of your fabric and make a quick tear with strength and speed. Step Two: Cover your work area with newspaper or plastic to protect against any possible spills. Step Three: Prepare your dyes via the instructions on the back of the box. Visit www.ritstudio.com for color recipes and best practices. Step Four: Dip and dye till your heart’s content! To create an ombré effect, play around with dipping different sections of the ribbon for varying amounts of time. Step Five: Hang ribbons to dry immediately in a cool, dry spot. We strung twine along our fence and hung the individual pieces of ribbon with clothespins. Dry time is approximately 30 minutes. Step Six: Once your ribbon is dry, wrap it around your wooden spools. Iron out the wrinkles before spooling if desired.

Rocky Mountain High Couple: Sloan + Michael Location: MacGregor Ranch | Estes Park, CO Photography: Kate Holstein

Location Benefits: • Endless vistas complete with a myriad of evergreens and snowcapped mountains • Open land = a blank canvas = limitless opportunity for a handcrafted wedding (i.e. freedom to dress it up or down with your select choice of vendors.)

• The property is exclusive to just you and your guests • Is your heart set on snow? White on white is quite a wonderful sight!

We had a vision of a ceremony tucked away in the mountains, and a celebration with milkshakes and dancing in a tent under the Colorado stars. One of my favorite parts of the weekend were the group hikes through Rocky Mountain National Park that our guests took together the morning of the wedding. Although many of them came to Estes Park as strangers, it felt as though they left as friends. -The Bride

Desert Essence Couple: Sydney + Garrett Location: Smith Rock State Park | Bend, OR Photography: Ever & Anon Location Benefits: • A golden glow as the high desert sun sets • The neutral landscape is the perfect backdrop for any color pops. • Views for miles add drama and romance to any size wedding. • Care to camp/glamp? Many Oregon state parks offer campsites, cabins, teepees and yurts. • Turn your "day" into a weekend of outdoorsy activities: hiking, biking, horseback riding, BBQ's and more!

We stood atop one of the canyons that overlooked a little rushing river below us. There was a slight breeze and the most magical golden glow as the sun set behind us. Ever & Anon captured moments we will forever cherish. -The Bride

SANDY SEASCAPES Couple: Jane + John Location: Garrapata State Park | Monterey, CA Photography: Erich McVey

Location Benefits: • Interested in eloping? The ocean can make for the most intimate backdrop. • It's double the romance! Garrapata captures both the tranquility of the sea and the grandiosity of a forest. • Big Sur and Carmel are just a few miles down the road. Say "I Do," hop in your car, and honeymoon the coast of California • Have we mentioned remote coastal locations make for the most spectular photos?

Sometimes, the simplest moments are the most beautiful. -The Bride

John has always wanted to live near a redwood forest, and my soul has always felt at peace close to the sea. The untamed beauty and tranquility of Garrapata State Park combines both these elements, and seemed a natural place to continue our story. -The Bride
