W E H AV E A C O N F E S S I O N TO M A K E : we’re obsessed with flowers. The colorful, romantic, happy (and sometimes moody) blooms completely set our hearts aflutter. Add floral design muse Amy Osaba into the mix...is there anything more delightful? Lucky for us, we had the chance to work alongside Amy and Florabundance for an inspiring bridal floral session that’s overflowing with pretty hues, whimsical layers and fairytale romance for days.

“ My favorite artist is Claire Basler. Her paintings embody how I want my arrangements to feel: free, clear, and delicate, yet bold and strong.” — Amy

BUILD your BOUQUET Amy’s top four tips for creating a fairytale bouquet ONE

Start with your greens, layering different sizes, shapes, and textures of the fresh foliage in a criss-cross pattern. Working with foraged materials for this part of the process gives you a more unique and natural look. TW O

Pick a variety of flowers that are different in sizes. Work towards an asymmetrical style, but, remember to keep the design balanced by using three points of interest throughout the bouquet. TH REE

Don’t hold the stems too tight. To get our signature "just picked" look, you must let the stems fan out. Don't fight their natural shape! That's what gives our bouquets what we call a "gardeny" style. F OU R

Allow for there to be some "air" between your flowers. Let the flowers fall naturally and face different ways. Don't fight their natural tendency to move. Let the smaller flowers like ranunculus dance above the others for added dimension.

“ I always love to add a dancing piece of jasmine at the end of a bouquet or arrangement–I feel like it makes them look fresh and even more alive.” — Amy

New Yorkers Patrick + KT gathered their friends and family for a celebration-filled weekend at Meadowood Resort in Napa Valley. The handsome duo dreamed up a day in which charming attention to every detail, an exquisite culinary experience, and the perfect collection of 2007 Cabernet met for a wedding that is all parts masculine, romantic, elegant, and downright fun!

20

f lu t t e r m ag a z i n e

the perfect pairing “Our love story goes a little something like this...On July 7, 2014, seven years to the day after we met on July 7, 2007, KT asked Patrick to marry him at New York City’s Gramercy Tavern—the first ‘nice’ restaurant we dined together at six days after we met. He fortunately agreed!” — Patrick + KT

“The Napa Valley was one of the first places we vacationed. We always considered it to be a very special location, especially given our love of food and wine. We had stayed at Meadowood a number of times previously, and when thinking of where to get married, we both thought the Meadowood – and specifically under those trees, would be perfect. And it really was.” — Patrick + KT

San Francisco pastry chef, Jasmine Rae, crafted the perfect blend of masculine and chic into the cabernet chocolate cake.

the perfect vintage “Over the years we have collected wine across multiple vintages and from various regions, especially Californian and French wines. Patrick in particular knew that 2007 was the ‘perfect vintage’ for cabs in Napa. We were keen to share wines that we collected over the years on the special weekend with our friends and family. It was a natural confluence for us to create the theme around wine and the year we met, which tied in perfectly with the setting.” — KT

love is in the details Event planning extraordinaire Lisa Vorce inspired Patrick and KT to host a fabulous red white and blue party to welcome their guests to the Fourth of July weekend festivities. It made for the most picture-perfect, spirited, and tasteful gathering. ITINER AR Y

juli + carl / San Clemente, CA / Photography by Amy & Stuart

Flowing champagne-filled libations, lush romantic greenery, exquisite style… Grab a bellini and join the party! You’re in for an elegant seaside wedding scattered with memories of this chic couple’s Italian adventures abroad. Salute!

sister style Juli’s twin sister and maid of honor Alex was the first to find her swoon-worthy dress from the British designer Erdem. The feminine yet bold frock helped set the tone for everyone else’s attire.

38

f lu t t e r m ag a z i n e

a monique lhuillier moment Juli said “I do” in a lacy strapless mermaid-style Monique Lhuillier gown and veil. For the reception, and as a nod to her Groom’s satin lapel tux, she ditched the veil and added a black satin sash. This thoughtful switch made for a fun way to distinguish the party from the ceremony.

love notes “A week or so before the wedding our planner reached out to me to write a short note to each of my bridesmaids that she attached to their bouquets, I thought it was such a beautiful idea. Little did I know she had Carl do the same for me! I will never forget the moment I saw his note on my bouquet” — Juli

behind-the-scene... “Cocktails (The Bride’s Bellini & Groom’s Aperol Spritz) were served in the lush garden lounge and dinner was served at long tables beneath a canopy of tiny little lights. Table tops held the simplicity of a garland of lemon leaves scattered with fresh blooms of gardenia and a mass of pillar candles. Dinner was served family style with a classic Italian menu.” — Jo Gartin, Wedding Planner

“During our time studying (and traveling) abroad, we completely fell in love with the Amalfi coast and Italian culture: family style dinners that last all night, the lemons, the bellinis, the sunshine, the hospitality! Our circle of friends and family is a small tight knit group and we wanted to combine our love for the Amalfi coast with the intimate feeling of a gathering of close friends and family. We aimed for a family style dinner with a formal twist. — Juli f lu t t e r m ag . c o m

DECK THE WA L L S

DIY Foraged Wreaths with Katie Chirgotis

‘TIS THE SEASON to deck your halls, walls, and doors with artfully textured accents and decor. Floral designer Katie Chirgotis of Eothen shows us three crafty ways to bring the beauty of the season into any space with earthy and organic foraged wreaths.

PH O T O G R A P H Y BY Leo Patrone

O F F T H E WA L L A DV I CE

“The best way to bring the season to your door is to literally step outside of it and harvest what's right there. Evergreen or leaves with a waxy sheen will last for weeks. Look for branches with natural curves, and don't hold yourself to perfect circles, (boring!).“ — Katie

FL O R A L I N G R E D I E NTS

Scout evergreens, changing leaves, shrubs, and found objects like feathers, stones, pinecones, and more, that you'd like to weave into your wreath. S U PPL I E S

26-gauge paddle wire 28-gauge straight wire Wire cutters Stem cutters Base frame * N O T E : your base frame dictates your wreath’s overall look. A double or quadruple wire frame, such as the blue-green piece, will support a lush, full design. A single wire frame, such as the pampas grass piece, will be more minimal. Incorporating the texture of a dried vine base (like grapevine or honeysuckle), makes for the most organic and natural composition as seen in the rose hip wreath.

1.

CREATE PACKETS OF YOUR INGREDIENTS There’s no right way to do it, just layer a mix of three or four ingredients in your hand, trim the stems, and start your wiring by wrapping paddle wire around the cut end of the packet a few times. Repeat until you have enough packets to cover your base.

f lu t t e r m ag . c o m

49

2.

LAYERING I'm right-handed, so I begin by layering from the upper left of the frame. Lay and hold the first packet against the frame using your left hand. Using your right hand, wrap your paddle wire, (currently connected to your first packet), behind and around the frame three times - making sure you're keeping the wire taut as you go. Do not cut the wire! Place the next packet in position so the top of packet #2 covers the bottom of packet #1. Continue layering and wrapping with your wire, moving your way down and around the frame as you go. Remember, you should be using the same piece of wire for the entire base.

3.

WRAP & TUCK When you've completed your base layer, give yourself at least six inches extra length of paddle wire before snipping. Finish your wiring by wrapping and tucking until the end is secure and hidden.

4.

CREATE MOVEMENT You can now tuck in gestural wisps (leaves, branches, seedpods) to add movement into your base layer by nestling them into the wire wrapping or thicker greenery. You can further secure these pieces by threading in straight wire, twisting and tucking the ends into the back of your wreath.

5.

HANG TIME Hang your wreath, step back and enjoy!

T H E GR AS S IS A LWA Y S GRE E N E R. . .

“Right now I'm obsessed with grasses: their colors and texture can completely change a composition. More farmers are purposely growing beautiful varieties, but there's always treasure in a roadside ditch or a passed-over meadow. That said, I can't keep my fingers from vines. And honeysuckle is super nostalgic.” — Katie fo r m o r e i n s p i r at i o n visit fluttermag.com

shannon + nick / Santa Barbara, CA / Photography by Lacie Hansen

Dreaming of a Santa Barbara wedding? Prepare to fall in love with Shannon and Nick’s elegant garden party at the San Ysidro Ranch. Naturally infused with romantic greenery, floral pops of color, and manicured whimsy, the venue is one that guarantees an intimate celebration fitting for any two love birds.

“San Ysidro Ranch provided the perfect backdrop for a beautiful and intimate affair. The grounds were absolutely stunning and provided the garden wedding feel that we wanted. The Ranch also played host to our rehearsal dinner; we were able to dine al fresco under the summer sky. The grounds are truly magical – especially after dark, the lights in the trees come on and the outdoor fireplaces come to life.” —Shannon

The couple exchanged their vows in front of a beautiful grade trellis, with wild, organic floral arrangements on either side of them.

bouquet breakdown Shannon's romantic bouquet was composed of an organic palette of hellebore, dahlias, ranunculus, clematis, blushing bride, and garden roses. “With the florals we were going for romantic and soft with a hint of a gathered style. I created asymmetrical spilling compositions in the most beautiful vintage dough bowls from Found Rentals. Since each bowl was unique, each floral arrangements composition was different. This suited the couple and the venue perfectly.” —Kristen Caissie, floral designer

thoughtful sips For the cocktail reception the couple served blood-orange margaritas (an ode to their then-upcoming honeymoon to Riviera Nayarit, Mexico) and French rosé (an ode to their engagement in Paris).

“The ranch’s many gardens, including the vegetable garden, inspired the table names and overall theme. Keeping true to the garden elegance of the property, organic floral arrangements sat on the dinner tables between which hand-drawn vegetable table cards by Brown Linen Design lay.” —Joy Proctor, Event Planner

Glitter and lace and tulle…oh my! When it comes to topping off your bridal style, it’s these intricate embellishments that add a glimmering array of pretty to any ensemble.

From glittering tiaras to romantic combs, sparkling hair sticks to veils, jewelry and belts, how does one choose? We sat down with Bel Aire Bridal’s creative team to get the skinny on everything from selecting the perfect accessories, to style tips, design concepts, the current trends and more to create a memorable bridal look that is unique to you.

What is Bel Aire Bridal most known for?

Bel Aire Bridal is known for its wide diversity of styles and offerings for every bride. We love that brides can turn to us and find whatever they are looking for: from headpieces to bridal belts to stunning cathedral veils. We also offer products at a variety of price points and have partnered with some of the best bridal stores in the country. What type of bride would you say your designs appeal to? We take into account

different types of wedding styles, such as glamorous, classic, vintage, destination, romantic, and trendy. We want all girls to be Bel Aire Brides, so we design our collections with a wide variety of styles for a wide variety of personalities. What gowns do you find complement your accessories best? We produce glittering belts

to jazz up simple dresses, intricately beaded veils to frame the most opulent ensembles, and luxurious lace edge veils to match romantic styles. Gorgeous metallic or floral headpieces top off the whole look. Our designs wonderfully complement everything from satin sheaths to extravagant tulle ball gowns. How does a bride choose between wearing a headpiece and a veil? It’s her special day—

why not wear both? A flowing cathedral veil is stunning for the ceremony and photos, while a shorter length veil or headpiece is fun for the party. Headpieces are so pretty and can add a sweet accent or over-the-top sparkle—the choice is hers!

f lu t t e r m ag . c o m

What dress designers inspire you? There are so many! We

love sourcing inspiration from independent designers like Samuelle Couture & Leanne Marshall that incorporate soft organic fabrics. We also look to high-end couturiers such as Vera Wang & Monique Lhuillier for the latest trends, and designs from Maggie Sottero & Allure Bridals for our traditional bride. We gather inspiration from across the board so we can create styles that every bride can relate to. What about pieces for bridesmaids to wear—any suggestions? We love coordinating

pieces that tie together the whole bridal party. Many of our designs are offered in a variety of styles so brides can mix and match. For example, our glittering rhinestone half halo can be paired with its matching rhinestone floral pins.

These create a cohesive style that looks great in photos (especially if the bridesmaids are wearing different gowns). 2015 is quickly winding down. What trends are you hoping will stick around? Color! We have

had so much fun incorporating color into our collection this past year. Blush and champagne are definitely at the top of the list! We love statement colors: they are perfect for the trendy bride and look equally beautiful on bridesmaids. How can brides buy Bel Aire Bridal accessories? Bel Aire Bridal

is sold in authorized bridal salons throughout the United States. Check out our store locator page on the official website to find a retailer in your area. Our stores often host trunk shows, so be sure to watch our events page for local shows.

We invite you to delight in details unlike any other for a lux Napa wedding that’s decked with tulips and cherry blossoms, and dripping in ivory and gold chinoiserie embellishments. It’s an extraordinary event where every single detail was planned with thought and created with love by dream team Lisa Vorce and Kathleen Deery. Lucky for us, photographer Aaron Delesie captured every ounce of the fanciful Napa affair.

a grand entrance The Restaurant at Meadowood staff lined a grand 50-yard boardwalk to the ceremony site to welcome guests in style and true Napa spirit with rosĂŠ wine.

bouquet breakdown Shierley held a soft bouquet of seasonal white peonies tied up with silk ribbon. Her bridesmaids carried bouquets of white tulips and callalilies. A garden of thousands of pristine white tulips lined the aisle and surrounding platform that led Shierley to her groom. Swoon!

“The couple’s worldly and sophisticated style challenged us to raise the bar higher than we've gone before, resulting in magnificent floral installations and many custom structures and decor elements.” — Kathleen Deery

this takes the cake! Perfect Endings designed the cake of all cakes around the chinoiserie motif throughout the reception. Each tier was covered in cafe au lait colored fondant, hand gilded with gold leaf, painted in bittersweet chocolate, and filled with a different flavor: Cafe Amour, Chocolate Caramel, Chantilly and Banana. We’re in heaven!

in great taste Designed with excellence in mind, Shierley and Christopher wined and dined guests with a five-course menu that was a true collaboration between Michelin-starred chefs Christopher Kostow and Michael White. Alternating courses served caviar, capesante, handmade fusilli, beef and olive oil pudding.

Paper Crown-Approved P ARTY

We are all about details and thoughtfulness in design in our clothing and the same goes for hosting a special gathering. Taking extra care in details makes for a significant impact. Here are some tips:

Hand-write invitations. Add romantic touches with flowers. Get personal with place cards and menus. Tune in to the perfect soundtrack. Consider comfortable seating and cozy throws. Pretty dishware and glassware are always a plus! — Lauren + Maura

“ We are fortunate in that we work with our best friend. We have known each other since 5th grade, lived together after college and shared a dream to start a clothing company together. Paper Crown came to be over many late nights of designing, business planning and multiple dinner parties with our closest friends that we essentially conned into forced focus groups (with wine and dessert of course!). Almost six years later, multiple seasons and new categories of Paper Crown, we suppose we owe our friends a dinner party in their honor!” — Lauren + Maura

the perfect PAIRING “We kicked off

the party with a pink champagne toast! Each dessert was paired accordingly to a formal wine tasting, starting with the lightest wines and desserts and working towards the darkest, most full-bodied. To add another element of fun (and decor), we used the prettiest assortment of glassware for each tasting.” — Maura

tanzania, AFRICA couple:

Rachel + Jeremy

location:

Tanzania, Africa

travel season:

September

length of stay: lodging:

10 Days

Gibb’s Farm / Kimondo Camp / The Palms

honeymoon moments:

Staying in the incredible safari tents at Kimondo Camp (a mobile camp that actually relocates along with the safari migration). • Eating dinner by a fire while watching elephants and giraffes walk by at Kimondo Camp. • Taking a game drive through Lake Manyara National Park. • Indulging in a luxurious Sultan’s bath for two while staying at The Palms in Zanzibar. • Watching the families of elephants cross the Mara river and play in the water. • Standing on and taking in the views of the border beacon between Kenya and Tanzania. • Learning to speak Swahili the way the locals do and convincing everyone to refer to me as “Malkia”... aka queen! • Seeing the village where one of our guides grew up and meeting his mother. • The Serengeti Honeymoon lions. • Swimming and paddle boarding in the Indian Ocean. • Seeing the local people of the Maasai tribe in their traditional red and plaid sukas. • Seeing all of the kids in their adorable uniforms hold hands as they walk to school - ages ranged from maybe 5 years old all the way up to high school/teenagers. r e a d m o r e about Rachel + Jeremy's honeymoon at fluttermag.com
