Editor's MESSAGE

Happy September Monsters! If you're new to Key Club, welcome to the 6th edition of Franklin Key Club newsletters! Special shout-out to those who circled 'yes' on your membership form: Thank you so very much! You can't imagine how much your interest means to me; I'll do my best not to disappoint! In short, I am your highly motivated Bulletin Editor, who will be releasing newsletters monthly for your information and entertainment. I also like to post fun “challenges in here to, so please stay tuned! Rolling right along to tips on balancing school and Key Club: based off advice I learned from the district treasurer and secretary, I recommend prioritizing academics over Key Club, especially before tough finals and when you think you're going to have a lot of homework. There's nothing wrong with signing out of an event 2 or more days in advance, especially if you find a replacement for yourself. Please do your best to create a stress-free, highly successful school year and a GOLDEN year of service! In service and in friendship, Pauline Tze

Secretary's MESSAGE Hello Monsters! Congratulations on completing the first month of the school year everyone! One month of school may be over, but there are plenty of volunteer opportunities. This past month, my fellow officers and I have introduced a new house and point system. Because we have taken away the Penalty System, a house and point system will keep everyone motivated and enthusiastic about attending service events, division events, and fundraisers. The available houses are from Harry Potter: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Want to be sorted into a house? Attend a club meeting! Meetings are every Monday at HK4. After being sorted into a house, sign up for service events! Earn community service hours, but also help the community out! You can celebrate this service with points that will be added to your respective house. More information about the house and point system is available on the forums. I highly encourage every member to attend Region Training Conference (RTC)! Attending RTC will help you learn about the leadership qualities that you possess at a variety of workshops. A Division Council Meeting (DCM) also will be held during RTC. Finally, you will make new friends, so there is no reason not to attend RTC! Please participate in our Grassroot Soccer Tournament on September 20th from 10am-3pm at Henry Backer Sr. Park! Together, we will kick HIV/AIDS out of Africa, saving the lives of many families. The event is only $5 per person. A team of 3-4 people is highly recommended. Schoolwork may be stressful, but remember to periodically sign up for service events and to celebrate service, family, and leadership. Keep up the hard work and continue staying strong and healthy! In Service and Friendship, Andrew Yu

Member of Member ofthe theMonth Month Member of the Month Who’s September Member of the Month? Dan Luu! His favorite event is the CSD Elk Grove Spring Extravaganza because “most of my friends were present, free food was provided, and I made a lot of people happy through my efforts to keep the event a positive and safe environment. Volunteering can also be like a work experience giving us teenagers a feeling of how work will be like in the future.” Key Club has given Dan the opportunity to make new friends and open up more; “Since I joined during freshman year, I’ve become more positive, lively, and goofy. My friend list peaked and it keeps going up.” When he’s not doing community service, Dan does anything to keep himself awake like reading, eating, or goes Internet surfing for anything interesting. However, when he is doing community service, he does it with great devotion and effort. Thank you for playing such an active role in Key Club by attending the majority of the Key Club meetings and taking on the role of a leader during service events by assisting volunteer coordinators wherever you are needed. Congratulations Dan! You’re doing an excellent job! -Lesley Wong

Questions and Answers Franklin Key Club 101 Hello! If you are reading this, you are either a new member or you're looking to become more active in Franklin Key Club! So. What is Key Club about? The new member handbook that you will receive will cover most of this information, but generally we are the largest student-run leadership organization in the world. We are dedicated to giving back to our communities and changing the world. What's special about Franklin Key Club this year? This year, we prepared a House and Point system to reward houses with the most active members. For more information, please flip back to page 2, the Secretary's Message or see 'Other Notes' on the forums. I thought service was free. Why do I need to pay dues? These dues are to offset the costs of social events and to pay for the large-scale support and benefits from the district and international levels (keyclub.org). Further explanation may be found in FAQ 'Other Notes our forums. If you wish for your dues to benefit OUR club directly, please spread the word submit your membership forms by October 24th!!! Where do I sign up for events and how will I know how many hours I have? Sign up on franklinkeyclub.freeforums.org as soon as you can. Events are continually updated there. If you want to know your hours, please visit the 2014-2015 Franklin Key Club’s Service Record Sheet; however, you will only be in the system if you've already turned in a membership form or you were a Key Clubber in prior years.

Past Events-HIGHLIGHT Kiwanis Family Large-Scale Workday Lesley Wong Pulling out weeds isn’t my favorite thing, but at the Kiwani’s Family House Clean-up (9/6) I was pleasantly surprised. What I liked most about the Kiwani’s Family House Clean-up, other than uprooting a gigantic system of weed roots that needed 5 guys to hack at, was seeing the number of other foundations and clubs that were contributing a helping hand to the Kiwani’s Family House. Everybody was so friendly, and I met people from other divisions and schools. It wasn’t just Key Club who came, but Kiwanis and Circle K as well and because of that it warmed my heart to see that everyone came out to give back to the community.

Cynthia Tze This was a really fun event, despite spending the majority of it outside in the sun. It was a great experience bonding with members from different clubs in 7 South, as well as members of other divisions, CKI, and Kiwanians as we all supported the Kiwanis Family House by pulling weeds and trimming bushes. Past Events (continued) Curtis Fest Artisan Festival

The Curtis Fest Artisan Festival (8/24) was a really fun event because we got to set up the festival from scratch and see it slowly come to life. It was really amazing to see all the different kinds of artists out there and all the beautiful artwork that these talented people had to display. From pottery, to stained glass, to painting, to CD art, there were so many beautiful types of art out there that it warmed my Eileen Eto (left) and Celena Yee (right) help set up the festival (Courtesy of Celena heart. -Eileen Eto Yee and Eileen Eto respectively)

Ridiculous Obstacle Course The ROC Race (9/6) was a lot of fun. The Key Clubbers I worked with were bouncing off the obstacles with energy and excitement; it was pretty clear when Kennef Nguyen and Kristen Kwong ran around highfiving event participants in a contest. After "showing people where to go" for 2 hours (no one asked us where to go honestly) and taking photos of other volunteers helping out at their events, an event coordinator sent us to be stationed at the Sweeper. The station was well prepared; they set up a station with paramedics on standby in case anyone got hurt and offered water to all the volunteers every hour or so. I had the opportunity to yell at the runners who made it past the sweeper that "THIS IS A SLIDE, SLIDE!" A few of them didn't listen to me and would rebelliously walk down the slide as I yelled at them to slide, but the few who listened to me and whooped their exhilaration made me very happy. Overall, I really enjoyed helping at the ROC Race and the opportunity to hang out with my closest friends. -Pauline Tze Clockwise Starting from Top Left: Ryan Santiago helps a runner get up; Angie Yan distributes sunscreen to runners; Andrew Yu monitors the bubble foam machine; Jamie Adachi watches for runners who manage to pass the Sweeper (Courtesy of Pauline Tze)

Past Events (continued) Garden Project This Key Club event for me was a nostalgia because I had the opportunity to visit Elliot Ranch Elementary, the school I attended. It was rather a more peaceful experience today as far as painting boards, tables, and harvesting with other members with no other loud noise but us, well we were quiet anyway. Overall this was my first event in a year and I'm very happy to start off with this one. Left to Right: David Guo paints a patio; Evelyn Nguyen paints a fence (Courtesy of Nathan Dang) -Nathan Dang

Food Allergy Walk For me, this event was a really fun experience because I got to meet Circle K members as well as hang out with other Franklin High School students. There were so many cute little children that were clearly having fun and I had a lot of fun as well. -Eileen Eto
