Spring

s we move into one of my favorite times of the year when the weather is a little warmer, the clock springs forward, the garden begins to bloom, and Easter is not far away. This year Easter is Sunday the 5th of April, and we plan to have four worship services: 8:00am, 9:30am, 10:45am, and 11:00am. Easter is always a wonderful time for us as a church—a time of great celebration and joy as we focus on the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. Later in April we are involved in our third Grains of Grace MobilePack event. Partnering again with the missions agency Feed My Starving Children, we are hoping to raise $60,000, recruit 1,360 volunteers, and pack 275,000 meals for hungry children and families in the developing world. This church-wide event is one of the most exciting mission projects we are involved in, and apart from being great fun, it makes a significant difference in the lives of those who are starving. Feed My Starving Children uses the tag line “Turn Hunger into Hope with Your Own Two Hands,” and that is exactly what we hope to do. Please put April 24-25 on your schedule, bring a friend or two, and come and join us as we put our faith into practice.

Strategic Plan As many of you know, we have been actively involved in developing a new Startegic Plan. Many exciting ideas are emerging from the “visioning” process that has been ongoing since last year. Hundreds of church members have participated and have worked diligently to identify and celebrate the core values that have guided First Pres throughout its 167-year history. The Strategic Planning Leadership Team has done an excellent job developing our emerging vision, which is focused on five key areas: • the relevance of biblical education and application in a post-Christian culture, • the development of a strong and warm Christian community, • the desire to serve our local community’s rapidly changing context with the love of Christ, • the intent to develop and strengthen critical resources to support these initiatives, and • the desire to engage all church members in active ministry. Eternal Life O

Now!

f the many interpretations of the meaning of eternal life, one of the most compelling is: Eternal life equals knowing the God of the universe. The God who flung the universe into existence by His mere spoken Word has called us to know Him. Jesus has promised those who believe in Him that “whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him” (John 14:21). The Holy God in three persons desires for you to know Him at the most intimate level. What could be more stupendous and exhilarating? Who could ever be bored as a Christian? As disciples of Jesus Christ, we have begun living our eternal life already! As we submit ourselves to the Bible in preaching, teaching, personal devotions, and study, we are coming to “know” God as He reveals Himself to us in the Bible. The Apostle Paul said that we are engaged in the renewing of our minds and the nurturing of our wills by coming to know the merciful God (Romans 12:1-2).

We are now in the very early days of school in the Kingdom of God as we have been invited to gaze through the glass darkly at the person of the triune God. He described Himself to our brother Moses this way: “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin” (Exodus 34: 6-7a). Soon there will be no dark glass through which we gaze, but a welcome into the dazzling light of God. Meanwhile, as we live out our lives under the wonderful providence of God, we must remember our church vision: “Growing Faithful Christians.” As I think about that challenge, I continue to come back to the prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ found in John’s Gospel. The prayer was lifted to the Father sometime during the night of His betrayal and possibly during the anguish of the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus began the prayer thanking God the Father for the authority He gave Jesus to give eternal life to God’s people. Then Jesus prayed, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3). Our learning will never end! Our lives in heaven will be filled with learning to know our great Savior, the Almighty Father, and the Holy Spirit. What a fellowship it will be!

“…Christ we proclaim, we train everyone and teach everyone the full scope of this knowledge in order to set everyone before God mature in Christ” (Colossians 1:28, Moffat).

Officer Training open to everyone who is interested

This year the training given to newly elected church officers to prepare them for ordination will be open to anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of the Bible, theology, and the “polity” (government) of the ECO Church. This training is extensive and requires a moderate amount of homework. Please contact Rev. Tim Leslie to inquire.

Read THROUGH The Bible in 2015 It’s Not Too Late To Start!

The challenge of reading through the whole Bible “civer to civer” is no longer a daunting one. Tools from simple to sophisticated are available to assist you in the endeavor. In the information racks is a small pocket-sized pamphlet that contains a schedule of readings. Several Bibles have a system built in for accomplishing the challenge. One can find them at any of our local stores. Ligonier Ministries has also compiled a list of Bible reading plans to choose from: ligonier.org/blog/bible-reading-plans. A search online for “Bible Reading” will display a myriad of sites and resources. Some really fun sites are PreservingBibleTimes.org and BiblePlaces.com, which will provide invaluable background to your reading. The benefits will appear as soon as you begin the journey through the Bible, as you find God’s presence, voice, and guidance in His Word. I look forward to joining you in this journey!

a Vision

ew and interesting happenings are in the works with two key initiatives of Session underway:

• The strategic planning process is now in its latter stages, • A study of church structure and leadership is getting started.

First let’s explore the status of the new Strategic Plan for First Pres. The Strategic Leadership Team, an ad hoc committee of Session, has collaborated with TAG Consulting to lead the Discovery and Visioning phases of the planning process. The Discovery Phase consisted of a church-wide survey, an assessment of the gifts of staff leadership, and Focus Groups representing the various demographics of the congregation. The resulting comprehensive Discovery Report then became the basis for entering the Visioning Phase, which is a process of determining what we want our church to be in the future. This work involved 40+ members in three retreats, whose purpose was to develop strategies for the focus of our ministries going forward. The resulting strategies call for First Pres to expand missional emphasis even beyond the currently existing programs, as well as to provide more opportunities for our members to actively serve in the ministries close to their hearts. These are truly exciting times as we embark on new directions to serve God’s kingdom here on earth. As stated above, the TAG process has revealed that we should dedicate ourselves to being truly missional in our ministries, and in order to effect this goal, we should become a “transforming church.” This means the church will be less “staff driven,” and activities within the ministries will be carried out primarily by members; in other words, every member is a minister. As a result, Session has contracted with TAG to provide a comprehensive study of church organizational structure and to conduct leadership development workshops for officers and staff. A survey of the full staff has already been completed, and Jim Osterhaus of TAG has conducted individual telephone interviews with representatives of the leadership of the church, both officers and staff. Going into March, three activities that are part of the TAG recommendations remain to be completed: 1. A one-day leadership workshop with staff and Session to determine the “rules of engagement.” 2. A one-and-a-half-day retreat for staff to process current issues and identify needed changes. 3. A one-and-a-half-day retreat for Session and Pastors for the same purposes, plus to set the direction for Session leadership. We look forward to reporting back to you as these development activities progress.

now available After over a year of a pilot program for online giving and a change to our website and giving platform, I am happy to announce that our online giving program is up and running. I have personally enjoyed automated online giving for a while now and appreciate the fact that once my wife and I have prayerfully considered what God is calling us to give for the year, We can set up a periodic draft and know that we do not have to worry about forgetting to write checks. For those who wish to set up online giving: • Go to our website at FirstPresGreenville.org. • Click on the GIVE & SERVE tab, then click on Online Giving. • You have several options. You can set up recurring gifts on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, or bi-annual basis. You can also set up a one-time gift or an Honor or Memorial gift for someone. • If you wish to set up a recurring gift, you will need to sign in. If this is your first time using the system (that is, you haven’t created an online gift on the new system before and you haven’t registered for an event), you will need to create a new account. Otherwise, log in with the account credentials that you previously created. • You may then complete the rest of the information and set up your method of payment. If you have questions or run into any problems, please contact me. I will be glad to help you.

Stewardship First Pres supports over 90 Christ-centered ministries, and there are grateful hearts wherever these ministries are found. Giving courageously as a congregation of believers magnifies God’s glory in places and directions that would be difficult to imagine as individuals. See how Christ’s love is shared within our walls, locally, nationally, and internationally— watch our stewardship video at FirstPresGreenville.org/ courageousgiving.html. If you have not already made a financial commitment this year, please prayerfully consider what God is leading you to do to support the mission and ministries of First Pres.

Update on ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians

H

ave you ever been in a situation where someone asked you to describe the main points of the new denomination of which we are a part? One easy way to think and communicate about the ECO’s direction is to focus on the three major emphases our denomination is built around. 1. Theological Integrity The ECO believes that the Church in North America is at a point where it must set out its main beliefs in a clear and concise way for believers and seekers to see and affirm. We have set out these main beliefs in our “Essential Tenets.” All officers in the ECO must adhere to and be bound by these. Failure to do so is grounds for removal as an officer. These essentials teach the historic, evangelical Christian and Reformed faith and lift up such things as the sanctity of all human life and traditional marriage. 2. Missional Focus Western culture has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. North America itself has become the third largest mission field in the world. As believers of the Gospel in the West, we must learn to be missionaries to our culture instead of relying upon cultural institutions to remain friendly or even neutral to our presence. The ECO has said from day one that if we only create another denomination, we will have utterly failed in our task. America does not need another denomination—it needs a movement of the Holy Spirit where we are propelled to reach our culture with the Gospel. To this end, the ECO seeks to be an “ECO-system” of churches that learn from one another and support one another for God’s purpose in the world. Our focus is to aggressively develop disciples, nurture leaders, and birth new churches. 3. Covenantal Accountability To make it effective, a movement such as that described above needs a level of accountability that has heretofore been unusual. The ECO has at least two levels of internal accountability that are new to us.

First, all pastors are required to be in “Peer Review & Accountability Groups.” Here, pastors meet regularly with a group of three or four other pastors for encouragement, challenge, and accountability. Everything from the pastor’s physical health to his or her devotional life is discussed.

Accountability and support for elders and congregations occur in “Missional Affinity Groups.” These groups call for elders from three to five churches to meet and review one another’s challenges and best ministry practices. This discussion is led by each session’s answers to “The Narrative on the Health of Mission & Ministry for Congregations.” This set of 10 questions asks the session to consider such things as what evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work can be detected in the life of the congregation and how impactful it has been in the local community.

It is exciting to be part of a movement and not just a denomination!

In this new year, take a

NEW LOOK AT WHO ECO IS and what it is all about… Our Mission

Covenant

To connect leaders in accountable relationships and encourage collaboration.

To build flourishing churches that make disciples of Jesus Christ

Our Core Values Jesus-shaped Identity We believe Jesus Christ must be at the center of our lives and making disciples of Jesus at the core of our ministry. Biblical Integrity We believe the Bible is the unique and authoritative Word of God, which teaches all that is necessary for faith and life. The prominence of God’s Word over our lives shapes our priorities, and the unrivaled authority of the Bible directs our actions to be in concert with Christ’s very best for our lives.

Order

To commit to a shared way of life as we unite around a shared theological core.

Thoughtful Theology We believe in theological education, constant learning, and the life of the mind, and celebrate this as one of the treasures of our Reformed heritage. Accountable Community We believe guidance is a corporate spiritual experience. We want to connect leaders to one another in healthy relationships of accountability, synergy, and care. Egalitarian Ministry We believe in unleashing the ministry gifts of women, men, and every ethnic group.

Evangelical

To advance the gospel of Jesus Christ and plant new missional communities.

Missional Centrality We believe in living out the whole of the Great Commission— including evangelism, spiritual formation, compassion, and redemptive justice— in our communities and around the world. Center-focused Spirituality We believe in calling people to the core of what it means to be followers of Jesus— what “mere Christianity” is and does—and not fixating on the boundaries. Leadership Velocity We believe identifying and developing gospel-centered leaders is critical for the church, and a great leadership culture is risk-taking, innovative, and organic. Kingdom Vitality We believe congregations should vigorously reproduce new missional communities to expand the Kingdom of God.

Our Name The name ECO is not an acronym. It reinforces our passion for strengthening the ecosystems of local churches. We believe the church is a living organism that needs lifegiving resources to help it grow, thrive, and multiply. ECO is committed to cultivating a healthy, diverse, resource-rich ecosystem where pastors and congregations can flourish. Our full name (ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians) speaks to our core commitments.

OUTREACH FOUNDATION

ECO Trip to Cairo, Egypt November 6-16, 2014

I

n the winter of 1993, I traveled to Egypt with other students from the seminary I attended to see the many wondrous archeological sites in that region. The rocks and stones that I saw then on that trip were quite impressive. In November of last year, as a member of the Outreach Foundation Board and as Moderator of our Presbytery, I traveled back to Cairo, this time to see the even more impressive “living stones” of that land—the faithful Presbyterians who live and minister in one of the key cradles of Christianity. Many Western Christians are surprised to learn that there are almost 400 Presbyterian Churches in Egypt. Started in the 1850s by American and Scottish missionaries, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Egypt (EPCE, also known as the “Synod of the Nile”) is the largest Protestant body in the Middle East, and its seminary trains pastors and lay leaders who serve all throughout that part of the world. The EPCE is experiencing a renewed sense of mission, and with the recent expulsion of the Muslim Brotherhood from that nation, it is poised to extend its witness to Christ in ways that have heretofore been impossible. Here are four specific goals I had in mind as I went on the trip, along with my observations.

Outside a church plant in the suburbs of Cairo BRIAN STEWART Evangelism and Missions Pastor 672.7032 bstewart@firstpresgreenville.org

1. Observe the Egyptian Presbyterian Church’s Church-Planting Movement. Along with mission initiatives in India and the Persian Gulf Region, the ECO has chosen to encourage our constituent churches to consider partnering with our Egyptian brothers and sisters in their efforts to plant new churches, specifically in the rapidly expanding suburbs of Cairo and Alexandria. In order to find employment, millions of Egyptian Christians are moving from rural areas to these new cities the government is building. Most surprisingly, the Egyptian government is giving free land for Presbyterian churches to be built in these new communities. Once the land is given, a building must be constructed on the land within five years or it is then forfeited back to the government. As a result, the Presbyterians are in a mad dash to put up buildings as fast as possible. Some of these new churches are very large and are near completion. Others of these church plants so far have only an arid field and the hopes and dreams of their people.

Denominational News

I was able to meet with the pastors and elders of a number of these new churches. They all have a bold and aggressive vision for bringing Christ to their part of the world. FPC Greenville’s Missions & Outreach Committee has already committed funds to help in the EPCE’s church-building effort. Our presbytery is also launching a campaign to ask all of our ECO churches in the Southeast to do the same. 2. Open an Ecumenical Dialogue between the ECO and the Egyptian Presbyterian Church. On different occasions, I was given the privilege of speaking to over 30 EPCE pastors, leaders of the Presbytery of Cairo, and Synod of the Nile executives about the ECO and our vision for ministry in North America and around the world. They were all very interested in hearing about our theological convictions and our decision to leave our former denomination. They have many of the same concerns with the PC(USA). The General Secretary of the Synod of the Nile gave our ECO delegation a nice plaque to mark our visit. Currently, leaders in the ECO are exploring a variety of ways we can formalize our relationship with one another. The Egyptian Church is very eager to relate to us. 3. Attend the 150th Anniversary of the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Cairo. Back in the 1800s, in order to support the new Presbyterian movement in Egypt, American and Scottish Presbyterian Missionaries started a floating seminary on a boat called the “Ibis.” The Ibis is now docked on the Nile River and remains a youth retreat site. The current seminary facility includes an impressive array of classrooms, a library, administration space, and student housing. It is the largest Protestant seminary in the Middle East, and students come from all over the Middle East and Africa to train for the pastorate. Representatives from over 17 countries came to mark this important anniversary. Surprisingly, representatives from the Egyptian government, the Coptic Church, and even some local Islamic leaders attended the celebration. The seminary works very closely with local churches and the Synod of the Nile in areas such as church growth and church renewal. 4. Visit Dr. Wageeh and Colby Mikhail. For many years, FPC Greenville has supported missionaries Wageeh and Colby Mikhail. Colby is the principal of the Ramses High School in Cairo, a private Christian school owned by the Presbyterian Church. Wageeh is the Director for the Center for the Study of Middle Eastern Christianity, which is located on the top floor of the seminary’s administration building. This center seeks to further biblical and theological scholarship on the origins of Christianity from a Middle Eastern perspective. The center contains a number of ancient manuscripts in the Coptic and Syriac language. The Center also serves as a reminder that Christianity pre-dates Islam in the Middle East by hundreds of years. Wageeh, Colby, and their two sons are doing very well, and they so appreciate the support we offer to them. All in all I was very impressed by the witness of the Egyptian Presbyterian Church. The truly symbiotic relationship among their seminary, denomination, and the local church is a marvel to behold, and is surely something that we here in the United States should learn to emulate. Their ability to witness to Christ within the constraints of living in a majority Muslim country is also a tremendous testimony to their faithfulness to the gospel. The EPCE offers the ECO the potential for a mature ecumenical partnership where both groups can learn from one another and share in the task of bringing Jesus to a world that needs Him so desperately.

Meeting Needs in the Dominican Republic

Suszanne Williams with dental patient

It is hard to express in words the awesomeness of the First Pres mission trip to the Dominican Republic the last week in January. Each of our 16 team members had an anointed job to do, and what a job they did! The majority of the team was medical personnel. Some pulled teeth, some administered medical treatment, some assisted patients with reading glasses—and all reached out to these precious people in the name of Jesus. So not only were their physical and medical needs met, but also their spiritual needs. The interpreters were a vital part of this mission team. Their love for Jesus was truly evident as they endlessly translated between the team and the people who came for help. —Judy Klotzbach

Turn HUNGER into HOPE with Your Own Two Hands Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor. Proverbs 22:9

O

n April 24 and 25, First Pres families and individuals from the Greenville community will come together during the Grains of Grace MobilePack event to prepare life-saving meals for thousands of children who suffer from hunger in the developing world. This is FPC’s third Grains of Grace event in partnership with the Christian non-profit hunger relief organization Feed My Starving Children. Since 2011, First Pres volunteers have packed over 464,000 meals which were shipped to orphanages, clinics, and schools in the Horn of Africa, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. As you can imagine, an endeavor of this size takes considerable planning and lots of volunteer support. Your participation in Grains of Grace will not only bring a life-saving change to those we are serving, but may also provide a life-changing experience for you in terms of personal growth, joy, and fulfillment. Our goal this year is to raise $60,000 and sign up 1,360 volunteers to pack 275,000 meals. Please use the Grains of Grace offering envelopes at the church or visit FirstPresGreenville.org to make your donations; and sign up to volunteer at FMSC.org. Visit our Grains of Grace 2015 event page at FirstPresGreenville.org for videos, details about the MobilePack event, and more.

What Is Alpha? The Alpha course gives everyone an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. It meets once a week for 12 weeks, including a one-day weekend get-together. Each week begins with a short talk that looks at a different aspect of the Christian faith. This is followed by a time of discussion where everyone is welcome to contribute.

Are you interested in or just want to

During the discussion, no question is considered out of place or too simple. Questions might include: “Is there a God?” “Why am I here?” “Why is Jesus so important?” “How and why should I pray?” “Who is the Holy Spirit?” The emphasis is upon exploration and discovery in a welcoming and informal environment.

Join us for our three-Sunday FIRST LOOK Series

Who Is Alpha For? Alpha is for anyone, and people attend from all backgrounds and viewpoints. They come to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus, and more. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes life. Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships that are built during the course.

Hearts & Hands for Christ

irst Presbyterian Academy has a heart for missions, and the Academy Student Council, under the guidance of Carolina Mullen, third grade teacher, and Amy Waite, parent and PTO Officer, has launched a new focus for the 2014-2015 school year. Students in grades 1-5 have already reached out to Homewood, an assisted living facility in downtown Greenville. In January, families gathered for an evening of hands-on outreach to support Soles for Hope, Blue Star Mothers, Homewood, and Neighborhood Focus. The next step for our students is an endeavor through Samaritan’s Purse. Our students are truly giving their Hearts and Hands for Christ!

It Takes a Village

year ago, my wife and I returned to the city of Greenville with the opportunity to serve the people of FPC through the Ignite Contemporary Worship Ministry. Seeing all that God has done in the past year is remarkable, and it’s not because of me. I am blessed to say that it is because of the people. The people are the ones who serve you weekly through music, pouring coffee, and opening the door to welcome you. And it even goes beyond acts of service; it extends to real ministry.

Do you have passion for music and a gift that God has been calling you to share at FPC? Watch for audition announcements in the GrapeVine newsletter for instrumentalists and vocalists. For more information about the audition process, please email jredgrave@firstpresgreenville.org.

A year ago we had limited opportunities to serve one another on Sundays with a small group of people. God took something small and gave it a heartbeat. “It takes a village” does not just refer to the raising of children. We have seen that it takes a village to minster to one another. God has used so many people to love each person who walks through the doors at FPC. The challenge is not over, nor is our mission complete. With Christmas behind us, we now look to Easter—another time when a high volume of visitors walks these halls. I ask that you pray about joining the community that is Ignite, with a desire to serve both visitors and members. For the year 2015, we are praying for 30 more volunteers to commit to serving once a month in a small way. To serve as a Door Holder, Coffee Greeter, or FPC Connect Table Greeter, please email me at jredgrave@firstpresgreenville.org.

Ignite Team Highlight

hen my wife and I moved to Greenville a year ago to serve on staff at FPC after three years on staff at a church plant in Tampa, FL, we did not come alone. On January 11, 2014, we were joined by an amazing couple, Brandon and Mary Emerson, with their one-week-old (now one-year-old) baby, Levi William Emerson. This past year you may have seen their faces in the hallways and assumed they were just your average church attenders. But this couple is far from average! They took a leap of faith last year, hearing God’s call to serve the people of FPC alongside us. With no promise of a job and no knowledge of the Greenville area, they trusted that God was in control. God continues to open doors and provide opportunities for Brandon and Mary, both here at FPC and in the community. They have volunteered their time and effort in many ways, leading regularly on the Ignite Worship Team, serving as leaders in Roots Student Ministry, and volunteering on the Ignite First Impression Team. Brandon, a high level leader on the Worship Team, helps to bring all the pieces together during the week as we prepare for Sundays, serving as my right arm in the execution of all things at Ignite. He helps keep me sane by preparing charts for the band, recording tracks, building stage designs, running cables, and so much more. As much as I would love to say I am Superman, I am simply not; I find it impossible to do everything on my own. I am truly thankful for this couple’s commitment to God’s ministry here at FPC. When you see Brandon and Mary in the halls, please take time to thank them for their service! The Emersons are by no means the only servants at FPC, as it truly takes a village. I look forward to featuring other Ignite servants in future editions of First Glance.

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. mom.2.mom Tuesday, March 24 • 9:00am with guest speaker Rebecca Madden Rebecca grew up in South Carolina and attended Clemson University. After graduation, she worked at IBM in Greenville, SC, where she met her husband, Jay, and after marriage, they became active members at First Presbyterian. When Jay began to sense a call to full-time ministry, they moved with their two children to Chicago to be a part of Willow Creek Community Church. While there, Jay and Rebecca promoted connection, Rebecca Madden small groups, and compassion in their community, and Rebecca worked on the development and rollout of Listen to My Life materials to help people engage their life story—past, present, and future. In 2009, the Maddens moved to Atlanta to be a part of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, and in 2012, Rebecca joined the staff as Connections Director, overseeing visitors, new members, Fuller Seminary, and the red dot initiative—connecting Peachtree people where they live for personal growth and community impact. The Axe of the APOSTLES...

and other tales

Children’s

• Samson was a strongman who let himself be led astray by a Jezebel like Delilah.

Sunday School Hour

• Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the Apostles.

9:30am–10:30am

Here are some actual unedited statements from children about Bible characters: • Lot’s wife was a pillar of salt by day, but a ball of fire by night.

• The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple. • Jesus was born because Mary had an immaculate contraption. • Saint John, the blacksmith, dumped water on Jesus’ head. • Jesus enunciated the Golden Rule, which says to do one to others before they do one to you. As cute as the above statements are, these children must not have had the spiritual teachers that we have at First Presbyterian! Here are some reasons YOU will want to be a part of Children’s Ministry: • We need people with a minister’s heart—and every volunteer has that anointing. • You get to introduce children to Jesus, a friend who will love them like no one else. • We provide all the training you will ever need. • You get to work with incredibly fun people, some of whom will become great friends.

H

elp us help you raise your children in a Jesus-filled way! We ask that parents please bring their children to Sunday School at 9:30am sharp* in order that they do not miss out on any of the lesson as we dig into God’s precious Word together. Please pick up your child by 10:30am to allow our volunteers to attend their preferred worship service. Children in grade 2 or below MUST be picked up by parent or guardian. Children in grades 3-5 have permission to meet parents at a designated location. (*We understand that the early service may dismiss after 9:30am; just bring your children to their classes as quickly as possible.)

• There is always a reason for a party—we like to celebrate everything! • Studies show that people who are not relationally connected are three times more likely to die than those that are relationally connected. Also people with poor health habits but great relational and social connections are likely to live longer than healthy people who aren’t socially connected. Takeaway: It’s healthier to eat Twinkies with good friends than to eat broccoli alone! • In another study, 276 people were infected with the virus that causes the common cold. Those with strong emotional connections fought off illness four times better than relationally isolated people, experiencing fewer aches, lower fevers, and less mucus. Takeaway: Unfriendly people are snottier than friendly people. • Last and most important, Jesus gave us a mission to go and tell and make disciples. What better place to do this than with our church family’s children? All of us in Children’s Ministry are waiting by our computers and phones. Don’t let excuses and busyness keep you from contacting us!

STAN JOHNSON Congregational Care Pastor 672.0334 sjohnson@firstpresgreenville.org

esus once said, “Let us work now while it is day, for the night comes when no one can work.” On another occasion Jesus commanded us to pray that God would send forth laborers into the harvest, for the “fields are white unto harvest and the laborers are few.” As I reflect on that passage, I wonder, “How long should my day be? When is the work done for today?” In the ministry of Congregational Care, I have often gone home wondering how, when, and if all the work will get done. With so much that needs to be done, that is a fair question for all of us. I cannot count the times that I have ministered to people who were on the verge of burnout. I can easily recognize this condition, having been through it myself. Once while talking to a brother who was burning the candle at both ends, I tried to challenge him to recognize his limitations. His family was suffering, his health was deteriorating, and his relationship with God was distant and cold. As we discussed his situation, he became somewhat defensive and said, “Well, I would rather burn out than rust out.” “Either way,” I said, “You are right where the devil wants you.” Yes, Satan wants us “out,” that is, on the sidelines, not able to give, too tired to serve, too complacent to see the challenges that lie ahead, too burdened by the cares of the world, enslaved by issues in the past, and haunted by the memories of things we cannot change. God wants us “in the game,” but His call is for us to be healthy in the way we approach life. That means setting proper priorities and drawing healthy boundaries. I have found that it is the good things in my life and ministry that drain me of the best things. When I cannot say no to something good, I cannot say yes to the really important things. How can I learn to know the difference between the good things and the best things? How can I learn when to say no and when to say ‘yes’? Those are difficult questions that only become apparent when we take the time to get away from the rigors of this hectic world and get alone with God. He desires to commune with us and speak to us of eternal things. He longs to refresh us so that out of our innermost being will flow rivers of living water. My own burnout came as a result of doing so many good things that I was unable to get alone with God and let him direct my priorities. I was very naïve to think that simply because I was doing His work He would protect me from myself. I discovered that God was far more interested in who I am than in what I do. He calls us aside to observe a Sabbath, a time where we can rest and give Him the room to speak and the opportunity to work in our busy lives. When we neglect the Sabbath, we open ourselves to the kind of busyness that can end in disaster. To take care of ourselves—mind, body, and soul—is to honor His day and reintroduce ourselves to the peace of God and the power of the gospel to heal.

MILITARY MINISTRY LEADERSHIP: a Privilege and a Joy

A

s far as we know, no members of the Military Ministry are currently deployed. Even though the central focus of our ministry is to support those members who are serving combat deployments, we rejoice and thank God that none are in this situation. I’ve often been asked if it was difficult to be a Christian and serve in the Marine Corps. I offer the following advice, which I deem appropriate for all Christian leaders: Pray for wisdom. Your leadership will affect lives. The Bible tells us, “if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5). Make a quiet reflection alone each day a priority. It allows you time to think, pray, read the Bible, and hear God speaking to you. Leadership requires time to think and plan. Your command is part of your ministry. Be competent in your profession and give God the glory. David, one of the greatest warrior-leaders of all time, provides us an outstanding example in Psalm 144:1: “Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.”

Col. Robert (Bob) A. Browning, USMC (Ret),

is a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. His father Charlie and son Scott are also retired Marines. Bob and his wife, Pat, have been married for over 53 years.

Let those you lead know early on that you are a Christian. You can do this in several ways, but your words and actions will make your Christian character evident to all over time. Set the example. Seek accountability from a peer. You’ll need to seek this kind of relationship because no one will come up to you and ask if they can hold you accountable for your actions. Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Don’t hesitate to seek counsel. Even though you are in charge, you don’t have all the answers and should not be shy about seeking sound advice. “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure” (Proverbs 11:14). Do what is right and leave the results to God. You may be confronted with decisions that will cause you to ponder the ramifications they may have on you and others. Do what’s right before God and let Him worry about the ramifications. Psalm 139:23-24 provides guidance. Watch out for pride. Many a leader has been caught up in success and has been trapped by the things of this world as described in 1 John 5:16. Let people see the joy you have in Jesus Christ. There will be times when you will feel tired and discouraged. However, unlike happiness, our joy does not come from circumstances, but from Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us to “Rejoice in the Lord always…” (Philippians 4:4). Don’t let circumstances steal your joy. Remember that it is a privilege and a joy to lead others and to be a positive influence in their lives. May God work in a mighty way through you for His glory. As always, we need the updated military status and addresses of all of our members serving in the Armed Forces, and we ask for your continued prayers for our members and this ministry. –Bob Browning

PRAYER IS A VERB

Prayer is an action word. Prayer brings about action from our Lord and Savior. It’s a means of communication with our Creator, and through this communication, our relationship grows stronger. God has given explicit instructions and examples of prayer, as well as telling us its value and importance to our Christian walk.

PrayerRequests for First Pres during Lent That we will seek to be Christ-like in our devotion to prayer, sensitive to the refining purposes of the Holy Spirit, and deeply grateful for the love and gracious leading of the Father in our lives. That we truly love one another at First Pres and love others as we go out into our community and the world. That we support and serve in First Pres mission opportunities in our community and the world, such as Hollis Academy, Neighborhood Focus, the Domincan Republic, and Malawi. That we support and serve in the Grains of Grace missional outreach to feed the hungry, held on April 24-25 at First Pres.

We want to encourage you to get in on the action! Make prayer a priority in your life. In your 40 Days of Prayer journal, record how God worked through your prayers. And then share your stories of encouragement and praise with us by emailing us at prayer@firstpresgreenville.org. The 64th annual National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 7. The theme is Lord, Hear Our Cry (1 Kings 8:28). Look for more details to come on how you can be an active part of this incredible day of prayer. Make prayer your verb and see what great blessings God has in store for you!

HANDMADE

with love and a prayer The Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 2008. Since then, over 400 prayer shawls have been knitted or crocheted and distributed to FPC members dealing with sickness, loss, or major surgery. Each year a number of Prayer Shawls are also donated to the Palliative Care Unit at St. Francis Hospital, where patients facing a terminal illness are given a prayer shawl made by hand with love and a prayer. Currently 25 members meet on a regular basis to knit and crochet the prayer shawls. At their recent annual “Knit-a-thon,” they enjoyed a wonderful time of fellowship with homemade soup and cornbread while they worked on creating prayer shawls and prayer cloths. e have had a blast at Wit & Wisdom so far this year, listening to author Ray Blackston, singing Christmas hymns with the Gallamore family, enjoying the magnificent piano concert by Sally MacArthur, and more. We hope you have been a part of this wonderful time of entertainment and fellowship. We encourage you to set aside the first Tuesday of each month, September through May, to join us for entertainment and lunch in Fellowship Hall. We will be winding down this season with Master Gardener Karen Brown on Tuesday, April 7, who will share about plants from the Bible. Our finale on Tuesday, May 5, will be entertainment by a Barbershop Quartet. Make plans now to join us for these last two Wit & Wisdom events. Then be sure to mark your calendar for the second Tuesday each month next season, when Jane Anne Bruch and Anna Teasley will put together another fantastic line-up of fun and fellowship.

In His Service

he Bible teaches that we should not forsake the gathering of ourselves together to hear the Word of God. On any given Sunday, an average of 1,800 people attend one of our three worship services, and approximately 900 attend one of our Sunday school classes. Many of our members volunteer by teaching a Sunday School class, singing in one of our choirs, greeting at the door, ushering, participating in our prayer ministry, serving as Elders or Deacons, and in countless other activities. Not only is our church active on Sundays, but come on any weekday and you will find people of all ages participating in Bible studies, choir practice, children’s and youth programs, and sporting events. All of these activities play an important part in the life of our church. Unfortunately, the time comes when some of our members are unable to attend or participate in these activities. It is at this point that the Pastoral Visitation Ministry becomes so very important. This ministry is dedicated to taking the church to the homebound, servants who may be discouraged because of health issues or family conflicts, or simply lonely and needing the presence of a friendly face and a listening ear. The Pastoral Visitation Minister fills this role. Over the past few months, I have been blessed to be a part of the Pastoral Visitation Ministry. I have found that as I visit and listen to these people, I am profoundly blessed to hear them share their stories of faith and trust. As the PVMs serve Christ by carrying His blessings to those they visit, they receive a blessing in return as well. The PVMs meet in the Parlor at 5:30pm on the first Monday of each month to learn about depression, grief, dementia, listening, the importance of prayer, and other topics that help us in our visitation ministry. If God is leading you to join this wonderful ministry, give us a call in Congregational Care. We ask that you continue to keep the PVMs and those they visit in your prayers. Thank you and God Bless,

Weekly Programs ROOTS Wednesday is our biggest weekly event. We gather together en masse from 5:45 to 7:15pm to share a meal ($3), build relationships, play crazy games, and hear solid biblical teaching. We investigate how the Scriptures apply to our daily lives in the various situations we encounter during our middle school years. Wednesday evenings include plenty of loud music, lots of fun, and great memories. Sunday School at 9:45am is reserved for a more in-depth study of the Scriptures. During this more relaxed time, we tend to follow the reformed tradition of lectio continua (continuous reading), wherein we teach straight through a book of the Bible and investigate the life lessons Jesus has in store for us. Small groups on Sunday evenings are a huge part of ROOTS. Typically, we have six small groups for ROOTS Junior High ministry, divided by grade and gender. This year, we actually have eight due to their popularity and growth in the ministry. Small group time enables students to build deeper relationships with their peers and form an accountability group. These groups meet at various homes on Sunday evenings. For information about your student’s small group and the time, please contact me any time. CHARLIE BUCHANAN Junior High Director 672.0333 cbuchanan@firstpresgreenville.org

SAFETY IN CHAOS

o one would be shocked to hear that middle school is a trying time for students. From remembering where your class meets to wearing the right clothing, students seek to find out who they truly are and where they fit in within their ever-complex social circles. Mix in raging hormones, a few broken hearts, and peer pressure, and you have created a whirlwind of confusion and anxiety. In the midst of this chaotic period, ROOTS Student Ministry exists to provide a safe place where students can come, find rest, and be themselves. From over-the-top games to specially catered lessons, we constantly strive to provide a place where junior high students can come and experience God in new and exciting ways as they grow deeper in their relationship with Him. It’s no surprise that the middle school years are a vital time for spiritual development in the lives of our students. It is a time when students have legitimate and complex questions about life, who they are, and even their own faith. Here at ROOTS Student Ministry, our objective is to show our students Christ and to teach them that through Him, we can find our identity, discern our calling, and share His message with others. We constantly strive to provide a safe and loving environment for our students to come and experience gospelcentered fellowship, genuine biblical teaching, and a ton of fun!

SUMMERTIME Our ministry exists to grow faithful believers. Over the summer, we do that through a myriad of activities and fellowship opportunities with our students. From Sky Zone to paintball, we offer a barrage of weekly activities and programs for our students. But our summer isn’t all fun and games. Over 35 of our 7th and 8th graders will travel to Dungannon, VA, July 20-25 to participate in construction projects and various other mission activities in the hope of sharing the gospel message with the community, forming lasting relationships with one another, and growing in their relationship with Jesus. Our local 6th grade mission trip in early August is also overwhelming, to say the least. Each year, we have a local two-day event, designed specifically to introduce our 6th grade students to missions. While all of these events leave us exhausted, they are an absolute blast to take part in! If this sounds like something that your student wants to be a part of, or if you would like to volunteer, I invite you to come and join us at any time! If you would like to become a leader and pour into the lives of these students, WE CAN USE YOU! Please contact me to get involved. Parents, later this spring, be sure to watch your mailbox or go online for our Summer Calendar of exciting events.

Deep ROOTS & Exciting Horizons

A

s we approach summer, I will be rounding out my first year as the Female Student Ministries Coordinator. It seems like my first Wednesday Night ROOTS was only yesterday, but as the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” In all seriousness, my return to First Presbyterian Church from student to staff member has been a testament to our heavenly Father’s love and provision. As many of you already know, it was on the FPC youth floor that I first learned about the Lord at age fourteen. Over the past decade, God has lovingly guided me back to this very special church to lead young women specifically, and guide them in their walks with Jesus.

Kate Fagan at the Gunter Just the other day, while standing on the youth Theater with Elizabeth Wilcox, floor, a wave of memories flooded my mind— Eliza Anderson, Caroline Linen, memories of my first days hearing about Jesus, and Cannon McEldowney my first church community, and my first time experiencing biblical teaching and true worship. In that moment, I realized what a beautiful gift from God it is that I get to spend 40 hours a week in the very place that God first revealed Himself to me. Moments such as those fill my spirit with worship for the great things He has done in my life and all that He will do in the lives of our students at FPC. Week in and week out, we strive to create an environment where students can ask questions, escape daily anxieties, cultivate friendships, and fall deeply in love with our Lord, Jesus. Our hope is that as they grow and mature in the likeness of Christ, they will be able to look back and say, “ROOTS was where I began to take my walk with Jesus seriously.” The coming months hold many exciting horizons for our ROOTS students and leaders. I am deeply looking forward to all that God has in store for our Junior High students in the hills of Dungannon, VA, and for our Senior High students on the shores of the Dominican Republic. I have great confidence that God will deepen relationships and glorify His name! We ask that you join us in prayer as we prepare our hearts and minds for the mission field. Thank you to all who have invested in the Student Ministries here at First Presbyterian Church. God has used this church in the lives of young people for many generations, and we pray that the story will only continue!

SUMMER CALENDAR Be on the lookout for our summer calendar in your mailbox! This will give you the exact dates and times we will be meeting, as well as specific days to pray for each focus of our ministry.

Growing a Family “High school. Or as I like to refer to it, the hardest five years of my life.”

A

ll joking aside, I firmly believe that high school is the most trying time of life. Students are forced to take on the task of figuring out friends and who they want to date. They battle through decision-making at critical moments while seeing so many people around them making bad choices. They have the immense pressure of deciding what they want to do for the rest of their lives, and where they will do it. One thing I like to say consistently to our group is that ROOTS is family. We watch out for each other, pray for each other, care for each other, and encourage each other. Our hope and prayer is that the fruition of these moments will be our students graduating with a deep adoration of and walk with Jesus Christ. We do a couple of things to make that a reality, starting with our Wednesday night meetings. We have a growing and thriving community of students from ten high schools, college leaders from North Greenville University, and many other leaders from all walks of life. Our students engage in fellowship, worship, and a biblical lesson, with a mix of fun, games, and food each week. We also have incredible small groups which operate during the school year. Leaders give up a couple of hours every Sunday night to love and encourage our students, initiate intimate community, and lead gender- and age-focused lessons.

New friends in the DR

This summer we are very excited to have the opportunity to take a team of 52(!) students and leaders back to the Dominican Republic July 26–August 1. This life changing week gives us the opportunity to love the people of La Romana and continue the work that First Presbyterian has already been a part of in Brisas del Mar.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for the kind words, prayers, and encouragement we have received over the last few months. In addition to the ministry growing, lives changing, and excitement growing, my wife, Lane, and I have had the awesome opportunity to become parents for the second time. Our daughter, Emma Rose, is growing and growing, and we are so excited to raise her within the incredible body of believers here at First Presbyterian. We covet your continued prayers, and thank you for the unrivaled support you have shown our students. As I tell my students all the time, Jesus used a group of people who weren’t famous or special to change the world, and I guess I am silly enough to believe that if we are willing, He can use us to do the same thing. That’s my prayer for ROOTS Student Ministries. Thank you for joining me.

Art Gallery Fundraiser Night On Friday, April 10, ROOTS will be holding an Art Gallery night on the Youth Floor. This will be an incredible event unlike any we’ve had before. You’ll enjoy live jazz music, hors d’oeuvres, and an opportunity to purchase original art pieces by our incredibly talented students and leaders. All proceeds—100 percent—directly support our 2015 youth mission trips. Don’t miss this incredible event!

hen choosing the year verse for Women’s Ministry, I ask the Lord to show me which one He wants us to use. Sometimes I will find the verse as I am reading in my devotions; sometimes I will hear it in a sermon at church or on the radio; sometimes a fragment of a verse comes to mind and I dig through the Bible to find the rest of it. No matter how I find the verse, God is the one who gives it to me. Never knowing what the year ahead is going to hold makes it all the more interesting to see how God is going to use the verse in the lives of the women of First Pres. This year’s verse for Women’s Ministry is Deuteronomy 13:4: You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him. When I found this verse, I did not realize how well it meshed with the mission statement for Women’s Ministry. It is like the two go hand in hand. Isn’t that just like God? The mission of the Women’s Ministry is to glorify God by following and fearing Him as we grow faithful Christians, those who will cling to Him, through Bible study as we learn His commandments and keep them, prayer as we listen to His voice, discipleship, missions, service (serve Him), and fellowship. God has given the women of First Pres many opportunities to live out this year’s verse and mission statement as we gather to study His Word together in Bible studies and Circles, as we join in the Prayer and Cup of Caring Tea Ministries, as we hear what God is doing in the lives of women at our special events, as we hold one another accountable for our words and actions, as we walk together through the ups and downs of life, and as we serve in different ministries of the church. There truly is a place for everyone in Women’s Ministry at First Pres. We invite you to join us as we follow God. n a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only nine percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview. Because of this, today’s believers live very similarly to non-believers. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation. To counter this slide within the body of Christ, Focus on the Family launched The Truth Project, a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 13 one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life. All men are welcome to this study hosted by the retired men’s group. Stand-alone lessons include: Veritology: What Is Truth? Anthropology: Who Is Man? Science: What Is True? Philosophy & Ethics: Says Who? Theology: Who Is God? History: Whose Story? Sociology: The Divine Imprint, Unio Mystica: Am I Alone? and more. Lunch is available for $7. Please email Carl Evans at carl.h.evans@gmail.com for a meal reservation.

RELATIONSHIP Ellen Woodside Elementary teacher Elizabeth McAfee renewed her faith through Radiance and its adult women mentors

“I’m in Kim Hassold’s small group, and it has changed my life.”

S

hortly after the Radiance 2014 Fall Kickoff at First Presbyterian Church’s Harper Chapel, Elizabeth recounted the spiritual transformation that her small group Bible study, led by Kim Hassold, has brought to her life.

“What am I getting myself into?”

Smyth Taylor, a preschool teacher at First Presbyterian, first invited Elizabeth to the girls’ Bible study that meets in six different homes in the downtown area on Wednesday evenings. However, Smyth couldn’t attend that semester, so Elizabeth grabbed her roommate Katie and showed up. “Being raised Catholic, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I went anyway. I had never done a Bible study before.” What she was getting herself into was a group of young women who were seeking to grow in their relationship with Christ and encourage each other along the way. Elizabeth recounts, “The Bible study has taught me how to make God number one every day. Being in daily communication with Him changed my outlook on everything.” The real glue of Radiance is the women who invest in the younger women. “We joke and say they are like celebrities to us. We are so fortunate to have women with Christ-like values to look up to.” What she and the other girls get from being led by Kim, Susan Batson, and the other 11 female mentors is rare: a seasoned adult who is interested in their lives and willing to invest time in pointing them to Jesus. “God knew what He was doing when He placed me in Kim’s group this semester. Kim is hilarious and has a huge heart. She is willing to meet me any time to talk about anything. It’s genuine—she’s a mentor to me.” It is no surprise to Elizabeth that Radiance has mushroomed in such a short span of time. What began as a small group of young women led by Diana Orders in a living room has grown to nearly 250 young adult women meeting in multiple homes. “Greenville has a need for this,” she says. “It’s nice to have a like-minded group of girls who share the same foundation and realness. I feel like I can be honest without being judged.”

To learn more about Radiance,

visit http://vimeo.com/106433881. Listen to AnnaLouise Carter describe her experiences with Radiance.

Elizabeth knows Greenville, having graduated from J. L. Mann and Clemson University. While she was doing her student teaching in college, her love for children turned into compassion for teaching them. Although her passion for teaching grew, something was missing in other areas of her life. During college and the year after, Elizabeth experienced a “spiritual darkness,” as she calls it. She endured a difficult job situation, the wrong relationships, and struggled with the direction of her life. She recounts, “I didn’t know that all I was missing was a relationship with God.”

Young Adults

35

One sweltering June afternoon in 2011, with no expectations, Elizabeth challenged Him. “God, if you’re real, I need proof.” That very night, she had a dream that reinforced that God didn’t just exist—He wanted a relationship with her, too. From that day on, she pursued God, but still needed more. It wasn’t until Smyth’s invitation to Bible study last September that a light turned on spiritually for her. Joining Radiance became a turning point in her spiritual journey. The mentoring and leadership that Kim and other adult leaders have invested in Elizabeth and her fellow 20-somethings has reaped several rewards. The girls’ lives are flourishing and growing in a Christ-like direction.

First Pres Connection

Although Elizabeth is Catholic, she has found herself making a full-circle connection to First Presbyterian. Not only did she attend preschool and Vacation Bible School here, but she is also the great-great-granddaughter of R. N. Ward, a former FPC Clerk of Session (1923-26) and Elder Emeritus. Like many others her age, she is looking for somewhere to plant her roots. Elizabeth has explored other churches, but comments, “I have an undeniable pull to this church (First Pres), whether it’s for this particular season of my life or for the rest of my life.” She loves the values that FPC holds and admires that it has something to offer for every stage of life. “That’s not something you find in every church.” Elizabeth has been attending the Ignite Worship service in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays. She appreciates the message and the way it refreshes her for the week ahead. From the first time she walked in, she felt warmly welcomed.

The Road Ahead

Journey Sunday School

On Sunday mornings, the “youngest” adult Sunday Class meets in the Parlor for connection with other 20-somethings and early 30s. Single, engaged, married, and married with babies and toddlers—along with adult mentors—gather for Bible teaching and conversation. While social events in the community highlight the year, the Journey Sunday School class provides a weekly connection point for young adults—come be a part!

Elizabeth chose to teach 3rd grade at an elementary school in Pelzer, SC. Her position allows her to be more than just a teacher. “God has shown me how to be a positive influence to these kids. He has provided me with the patience and love that they need.” As a teacher, Elizabeth has her summers off and likes to travel. She usually picks a place to live and explore. Last summer, she moved to Los Angeles to experience the west coast lifestyle. Although she will always have the travel bug, she is no longer a spiritual wanderer. “I am excited to continue this journey God’s got me on. Through Radiance, I have learned to pursue Him as strongly as He has pursued me. His character is more loving, patient, and forgiving than I ever realized. If you just ask for it, He will show it to you.” “I never thought I would say this, but I look forward to Bible study every week. It’s crucial for me. When we don’t meet, I feel that something is missing. Radiance is extremely special.” What is most special about Elizabeth’s story is that Radiance, along with its members and leaders, has renewed her relationship with Christ.

“Through Radiance, I have learned to pursue Him as strongly as He has pursued me. His character is more loving, patient, and forgiving than I ever realized.”

Spring

s we move into one of my favorite times of the year when the weather is a little warmer, the clock springs forward, the garden begins to bloom, and Easter is not far away.
