DIANE VON FÜRSTENBERG & THE WRAP DRESS

D

By Tonya Lambert

iane von Fürstenberg — her name will always be thought of in conjunction with her iconic wrap dress, her astonishing life, and her efforts to empower and improve the lives of women. Born to an Auschwitz survivor, she married and then divorced a German prince. As a young woman, she developed a dress that was not only remarkably successful, but has also stood the test of time. She was a subject of painter Andy Warhol and graced the cover of Newsweek before the age of 30. The mother of two and grandmother of four is the owner of a multi-million dollar fashion firm for which her lips are the wellknown logo. In 2014, she was listed as the 68th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine. In short, Diane von Fürstenberg has lived a life of such gigantic proportions, it staggers the imagination. In her recently released memoir, The Woman I Wanted To Be,, von Fürstenberg credits her parents with giving her the tools that led to her later success. Since she was young, she has had a fierce desire to be independent and not financially reliant on any man. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the woman I wanted to be,” says von Fürstenberg. Having apprenticed with Italian textile manufacturer Angelo Feretti, she decided to try her hand at designing women’s clothing. She had some of her designs sewn up and presented them to American Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, who was impressed. When the young designer unveiled her take on the wrap dress, it was her use of the curve-clinging jersey knit fabric that was largely responsible for its tremendous success. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Diane von Fürstenberg (DVF) wrap dress. As popular as ever before, it is the subject of a new coffee table book, The Journey of a Dress,, and a major exhibition. All encompassing, the DVF wrap dress is sexy yet presentable, practical yet pretty, equally appropriate in the boardroom or at a nightclub. Creating Tomorrow’s Family Heirloom today

Mōkadä Custom Jewelry Design By Emmaly Wiederholt

T

here’s nothing quite like jewelry. It dazzles in the light, makes you feel pretty, catches that special someone’s eye and has even been known to make you feel more confident. However, as each person’s tastes are unique, so it is true with jewelry: no two people can wear the same piece alike.

At M ō kadä Custom Jewelry Design Studio, your uniqueness, down to the way a necklace falls over your collarbone, is something to be celebrated. From rings, pendants, bracelets, brooches, charms, earrings and more, every piece is handdesigned with the personality of the wearer in mind. Mona Stott, owner

Because jewelry is an extension of each person’s personality, the staff at Mō kadä believe no one should be made to feel rushed, pressured or limited when making such an important decision. For that reason, relaxed one-on-one appointments in M ō kadä’s private setting are the preferred method of going about designing a piece to fit your needs and lifestyle. Tell Mōkadä your story, why you wear a piece, when you wear a piece, even how you wear a piece. Your intimate involvement in the design process gives you a sense of ownership from the beginning. While Mō kadä will make recommendations, educate and impart expertise, your creative experience and satisfaction is paramount. Top phoTo by Shawn Fillion

“The Mōkadä experience is a testament to the expertise, graciousness and passion owner Mona Stott has for jewelry. Customers have Mona’s undivided attention to ensure their design truly reflects their personality, honours their relationship and celebrates a milestone in their life. It is impossible for Mona to meet a client and not instantly form a bond. Creating an engagement ring, pairing it with a wedding band, celebrating the arrival of a child with a push present and seeing the same people return years later for big life moments like anniversaries and graduations is an honour Mona takes very seriously,” says Danielle Tkachyk of Mōkadä Jewelry.

She continues: “Mōkadä was founded as an alternative to overpriced traditional jewelry options. We hope to dispel the myth that custom is a code word for expensive. Custom is a synonym for unique, exclusive and one-of-a-kind, but it need not break the bank. With a network of diamond and gemstone suppliers, we are known for sourcing a variety of conflict-free stones for our client’s selecting pleasure. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder; a certain cut, colour and shape will speak to you alone. Your design will subsequently centre on your choice.”

And when the time comes to pass that special piece on to the next generation, they will know it’s more than just an attractive adornment; it’s emblematic of you. Mō kadä essentially makes legacies that shine. Unwavering attention to detail, unrivaled customer service and friendship make this studio one customers trust to jewel their hopes, dreams and most special moments. eciding what to wear is a challenge for many women. Even when your closet is jampacked with clothes, creating a look that allows your true personality to shine through can be bewildering.

dating, vacations or the change of seasons. Whatever is happening in your life, wardrobe stylist Myra Gonzales of My Style Sense can help you sharpen your sense of style and your look.

You may be trying to adapt your wardrobe to a variety of different situations: losing or gaining weight, recovering from an illness, having a baby, job interviews,

Gonzales offers Winnipeg women of all ages a variety of services from a complete closet clean-out to a personal shopping expedition or a combination of both.

“This spring, the closet maximize package is very popular,” says Gonzales. “Women want to freshen up their look for the season, but they also want to keep what they can.” Gonzales goes to the client’s home, assesses the needs and does a body style analysis to provide a framework for the wardrobe. and what pieces should be added or purged. “This helps clients maximize what they already have without spending more money right away,” she says. Her power shopper package is usually done in a mall or boutique store chosen by the client and also involves a body style analysis. Here, Gonzales gives generous advice on the best colours for the client’s skin type and tips for choosing clothes to compliment her silhouette. She will assist the client in shopping within her budget to meet her needs. “Shopping can be frustrating for women,” says Gonzales. “There are no longer standard sizes. One size in one store fits differently in another. And often, women aren’t able to decide what suits them. If they’re equipped and know what to look for, shopping will be a lot quicker and easier for them.” Gonzales has always had passion for styling. After studying at the John Casablancas Institute in Vancouver, she worked as a costume assistant, putting together fashion shows and styling photo shoots. When she returned to Winnipeg, she decided to offer her services to the public and started My Style Sense in 2008. “Personally, I admire classy, chic and timeless style and I want to be able to dress my age,” says Gonzales. “Many of my clients also want to look natural and ageappropriate. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort, but you also don’t have to look like you’re trying too hard to look young. You want your style to look effortless.” My Style Sense client Pam says, “The time I spent with Myra sorting through my closet was helpful to learn about the pieces that go together and clothes that are best suited to me, as well as those that are not. Following that time with the shopping trip made for a positive, thorough and informative wardrobe experience. Myra was patient and detailfocused. This was a good day and left me with knowledge I will remember.” My Style Sense Winnipeg 204.951.6432 myra@mystylesense.com www.mystylesense.com

passionate and loved my career, but it also involved extensive travel. I was missing out on far too much time with family and friends, so I started coming up with ideas for a change. As a result of my travels, I was able to visit some of the best salons and spas in North America. I’d observe and gauge what I loved about my experiences, and what I would do differently.” The seed was planted when sharing a negative experience — her husband

Jonathan said, “Why don’t you do this?” After extensive research and due diligence, Gershman chose to utilize her business and customer care acumen to create One Salon and Spa. Her goal: to take a step away from the ordinary with a guest-centric approach, being an employer of choice and providing exceptional services in a beautiful yet welcoming environment. Giving back was an integral part of the business to her as well. To do so, Gershman chose to take a dollar from every transaction and donate to a different charity each month. “Instead of arbitrarily deciding on a charity to work with, guests enter the name of a charity they’re passionate about on a ballot and at the end of each month we draw from those selections,” she explains. “Those proceeds go to the chosen charity, the person is notified and we make an announcement via social media.” Each

team member is also committed to four hours of volunteer time each month. One Salon and Spa emphasizes unity and the “One” Team is a testament. They are exceptionally talented and committed. Each team member is dedicated to provide the best services for their guests, reflecting the salon’s tagline: One Passion, One Team, One You. “Guests have many choices, and we feel privileged that they choose to come to us,” says Gershman. “Our team is a group of impassioned, kind, talented, enthusiastic individuals committed to the guests. They are simply our core – and I couldn’t be more grateful they chose One Salon and Spa as their home.” Gershman has created a truly different experience. This salon and spa is a toptier experience that lives up to their promise: One Passion, One Team, One You.

Know the Major Signs of Aging Skin

Darlene Neufeld independant brand partner Winnipeg 204.799.2700 darlene.neufeld36@gmail.com www.agereversingcream.com

WRINKLES & FINE LINES Not to be confused with “expression lines”, wrinkles are an inevitable part of the natural aging process. As we get older, our skin gets thinner, drier, and has less elasticity. Add to that environmental influences like sun exposure, smoking, dehydration, and medications - wrinkles are bound to appear. Some people will choose a “quick fix” like topical fillers, plumpers, or irritants. These remedies are very temporary and you have to ask yourself what the long-term effect

18

FineLifestyles

Winnipeg

will be. Others will choose a face lift (called rhytidectomy) or other medical procedures such as dermabrasion, laser treatments, botox injections or chemical peels. Besides being costly, these procedures are also temporary, should be administered by a health professional, and can take weeks or even months of recovery time. LOOSE, UNEVEN SKIN TEXTURE Collagen is a fiber in the connective tissue throughout your body. As you age, your body naturally stops producing collagen, and the existing collagen can begin to breakdown, resulting in a general lack of firmness and facial sagging. To slow down collagen breakdown it is best to use a sunscreen daily, eat foods that contain high amounts of the amino acids lysine and proline, take Vitamin C on a daily basis, increase the amount of protein in your diet, and apply a daily cream that contains natural retinoids found in plants such as Bidens Pilosa. DISCOLORATION Also known as “age spots”, discoloration is a sign of sun damage. How much is too much? For each person that question has a different answer. The best things to do are: use a sunscreen, limit your exposure and use a good cream to heal any damage that may have occurred.

STYLE

ENLARGED PORES Sex, age and sun damage contribute to enlarged pores. In general, men tend to have larger pores than women, although women can experience enlarged pores due to hormonal changes. As you get older your skin loses its elasticity, which can cause your pores to look bigger . Sun damage makes your skin thicken, causing skin cells to collect around the edges of your pores, causing them to stretch out. While many factors that lead to enlarged pores are out of your control, some conditions that cause big pores can be combated with a good skin care regimen. OPTIMERA WORKS While most commercial anti-aging products work on one or two of these signs, Optimera Night and Day creams address all these signs of aging! Optimera dramatically reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, uneven skin texture, enlarged pores and aging or loose skin without the use of harmful ingredients. Independent, third party clinical trials performed on Optimera show that 93% of participants had improvement in the appearance of their wrinkles and 97% had an improvement in their radiance. Try them for 90 days and experience the difference for yourself!

How

3D Printing Could Change the FaCe oF PlastiC surgery By Henny Buffinga

3

D printing is one of the most exciting new technologies to emerge in recent years, most importantly because of the vast implications for almost any industry: manufacturing, shipping, construction, patenting, medicine… the possibilities are seemingly endless. The process works by creating objects one layer at a time, sequentially printing layers of paper, resin, plastic, metal, biomaterial or another material based on a digital scan or model. In medicine, advancements are being made with bio-printing, where the material used in the layering process can consist of skin cells, stem cells or the patient’s own cells, which can create an organ with a lower chance of the patient’s body rejecting it. The $2 billion 3D printing industry is projected to reach $6 billion by 2017, and the field of medicine is welcoming the possibilities of the new technology with successfully printed live tissue and working organs making headlines this year. Plastic surgeons in particular are taking advantage of this new technology in interesting ways. Using 3D printing as an educational tool, surgeons are able to print models of body parts in order to plan complex surgeries. This is the most widely used application of the technology at this time. These precise anatomical models allow a surgical team to evaluate several courses of action before determining the best scenario. The models can serve as a guide to the surgery, where time is critical. Any time saved during surgery means a greater chance at recovery. Another seemingly conventional use of 3D printing is proving invaluable to the cosmetic surgeons. Iranian cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yakub Avsar, for example, is using 3D printing to provide his clients with a more accurate view of themselves and what they would look like post-surgery. Avsar uses this technique with patient’s undergoing a rhinoplasty (nose job) to demonstrate realistic before and after models for his patients. Patients can now see their

22

new face from all angles and make a more educated decision on their surgery. 3D printing also holds exciting possibilities for aesthetic improvements for procedures such as breast augmentation. The implants could be designed by the plastic surgeon to fit the patient’s measurements and desired changes. This process would provide a customized implant that would suit the patient’s form perfectly. The costs of 3D technology are still high, not least because of the outlay of materials alone, over and above the technology. However, with 3D printers predicted to become more accessible and affordable in the coming years, it is anticipated the technology will become more widely embraced for the many advantages it can provide surgeons, many of them as of yet unexplored, and with seemingly unlimited possibilities for more visually appealing and safe procedures.

So how do they work?

“VelaShape™ works on the fat between the muscle and skin, which is the hardest to get rid of with diet and exercise,” says Colosimo. “Eighty percent of patients see noticeable effects immediately.”

VelaShape™ combines Bi-Polar Radiofrequency (RF) and infrared light energy with vacuum and mechanical massage. The skin is smoothed out with vacuum and massage rollers, which facilitates the efficiency of the machine’s heat energy. The heat causes fat cells to

UltraShape® destroys fat cells by emitting sound waves of ultrasonic energy. While VelaShape™ tightens the skin, UltraShape® is aimed at reducing circumference, by removing fat in a noninvasive way. UltraShape® can be used on the abdomen, thighs and buttocks.

For maximum results, the two procedures may be used on the same area of the body. “The response time of these procedures is faster than with any other technology on the market,” says Colosimo. “Clients are very happy with the results.”

Both VelaShape™ and UltraShape® are Health Canada and FDA approved and used worldwide. In Manitoba, the machines are currently exclusive to the Ziesmann Clinic, which is at the forefront of testing and adopting new technologies that increase its clients’ satisfaction and experience. “We make sure the treatments we are going to provide will meet our clients’ expectations,” says Dr. Ziesmann, “We want to ensure people feel happy with the results.” He points to the example of a recent client, a retired surgeon who had the UltraShape® treatment. “He wanted a couple inches off his waist and he was ecstatic with the way it turned out.”

Being in the beauty industry can be incredibly satisfying but as a visionary, Joanne wanted to take her business one step further. She knew the business was saturated with harmful products and while she knew she couldn’t change the world, she could make green decisions for her own salon. One of best selling lines is Eufora International, a California-based company that has built its brand on providing top performance, people and planet-friendly hair care products. “The Eufora line is first class,” says Joanne. “From the quality, environmentally friendly botanicals to the no-petroleum formulations, their products deliver consistent, superior results.”

Always innovating, she has traveled to not only Eufora’s head office but to Italy to assist the company in the development of their new, high-performance colour line. “EuforaColor is a premium product with minimal negative impact,” says Joanne. Guests leave the salon with soft, silky hair that is vibrant enough to garner compliments. The Colors team knows our outward appearance is a reflection of our inner well-being and attitude. True beauty is a celebration of both. That dedication to beauty and wellness in all their salon services will leave you feeling transformed from head to heart.

I

n an age where popular culture touts celebrities as skin care experts, Dr. Amanda Patenaude’s SkinRhümMD clinic is refreshingly scientific.

A specialist in internal medicine, autoimmune and autoimmune skin diseases and a member of the National Society of Cosmetic Physicians, Dr. Patenaude is medical in her approach and innovative in her techniques and how she selects products for healthy, gorgeous skin. The rapidly growing East St. Paul practice has blown up not only

in loyal patients, but in scope of services and reputation. As Dr. Patenaude and her team at SkinRhümMD enters their fourth year, they are filled with excitement for new potential and, good news for patients, have even higher expectations for results. “Start with skin and end with skin,” explains Dr. Patenaude of her skin care philosophy. “It’s about treating, nurturing and maintaining skin health today for skin health tomorrow.” Having studied with experts in Canada, the US and Europe,

Dr. Patenaude built SkinRhümMD with the intent of bringing the most advanced medical and cosmetic solutions to the skins of East St. Paul. Her — and indeed the clinic’s — subsequent adoption of ZO, Zein Obagi’s medical grade line of professional products, is an extension of this goal. Offering product combinations for every skin type, ZO uses proprietary formulations of retinol and delivery systems to achieve transformative results in the appearance of skin. “We recognize how important a professional, discrete and compassionate experience is for our patients. All of our staff members are trained and genuinely care about what they do and the patients they do it for. That makes a difference.” line of products, ZO provides an approach to skin that is based on the latest advances in skin science and is aligned with SkinRhümMD ’s “skin to skin” philosophy. “ZO talks about skin care as a continuum spanning daily care, prevention, maintenance and therapy,” says Dr. Patenaude, “This makes sense to me as a physician, but it also resonates with my patients who are looking for more than hope in a bottle.” At this time of year, retinol peels, often using the ZO line, are one of the most effective ways in which SkinRhümMD helps turn their patients’ hopes into realities. Using a layering technique, SkinRhümMD ’s customized peels help promote the stimulation of new, healthy skin while reversing signs of aging, unwanted pigmentation and acne. This foundational regimen is most often complemented by in-office treatments for optimal rejuvenation. For example, a combination of light and laser treatments may be incorporated at the beginning of a treatment to kick-start results or after a condition, such as acne, has been stabilized with topical treatments. No matter what the tools, every regimen is tailored to the individual patient’s needs, lifestyle and budget. In addition to achieving healthy, disease-free skin, SkinRhümMD ’s experts also provide patients the option to enhance their appearance noticeably but naturally. Dermal fillers, such as Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm, are ideal tools for patients seeking to soften deep wrinkles, refine facial contours or augment their favorite features. “Like any of our procedures, the desired results can be as dramatic or subtle as the individual prefers,” explains Carris Somogyi, clinic manager. Bothered by lines around your face and mouth? Dermal fillers can help soften their appearance in as little as a single treatment. Looking for a more feminine pout? SkinRhümMD’s mini-lip lift uses a judicious amount of dermal filler to gently plump lips.

Beyond the products, SkinRhümMD ’s staff features experts trained in the most advanced injection and administration techniques. “As carefully as we choose the right product for a patient, we are painstaking when determining how and where to inject,” clarifies Dr. Patenaude. Indeed, Dr. Patenaude participates in on-going cosmetic training, both within Canada and abroad, to ensure she and her staff are up to speed on the most advanced techniques for the best cosmetic outcome with minimal bruising or down time. Another key ingredient in SkinRhümMD’s formula is staffing. If you’re looking for a rushed receptionist or pushy patient coordinator, you’re definitely in the wrong spot. As Dr. Patenaude puts it, “We recognize how important a professional, discrete and compassionate experience is for our patients. All of our staff members are trained and genuinely care about what they do and the patients they do it for. That makes a difference.”

Seductive Sights & Tantalizing Temptations AT THE TORONTO CULINARY SALON By Tonya Lambert Photos Shonah Chalmers

Food is more than just the relationship it has with your taste buds; food intimately engages all our senses — taste, touch, sight, smell, even sound. Close your eyes and imagine the sizzle of a steak on a grill. Indeed, if a dish doesn’t appeal to the gatekeeper of our senses, it will likely never make it into your mouth. 36

He was joined by Gert Kloetzke of Sweden, WACS culinary committee chairman; Stafford DeCambra, chairman of The American Academy of Chefs; Clayton Folkers, an instructor at Edmonton’s Northern Institute of Technology; Don Gyurkovits of Vancouver, CCFCC national president; and Cornelia Volino, manager of CCFCC Bourse d’Or Canada. Early on the morning of the competition, competitors make any final adjustments to their artistically presented dishes before the judging begins.

he Toronto Culinary Salon (TCS) focuses primarily on the sight sentinel. In other words, how attractive is a dish? Does it look so tempting you must taste it? Touch also plays a role. Can you see a variety of contrasting textures to tantalize your taste buds? These are questions the jury members at the prestigious TCS sought to answer March 1-3 as they graded each entry on: • • • •

Each competitor is then awarded a medal based upon his or her score: 90-100 for gold, 80-89 for silver and 70-79 for bronze. Four Best of Show Awards were also presented this year. After the judging was completed on each of the three days of the event, attendees of The Restaurants Canada Show were able to admire the enticing entries, ample evidence Canadian diners will be enjoying wonderful eating experiences for many years to come.

Held at Toronto’s Direct Energy Centre in conjunction with The Restaurants Canada Show, TCS is a chance for both local and international culinary and pastry students as well as professionals to show off their talents, experiment with new ideas and ingredients, and share their knowledge with colleagues. WINE NOT

New Grape Resolutions By Sean Dolenuck, Sommelier CAPS (ASI) Manitoba’s Best Sommelier 2015 La Boutique del Vino

A

s we awaken from our winter hibernation, as we attempt to make good our resolutions, as we embrace new beginnings and start planning our social outings, it’s time to think about innovative, exciting wines. Go ahead, open the windows, let in the fresh air; while you’re at it, Wine Not open your mind to grapes that are must-try wines for 2015. Follow me as we take our first wine flight suggestion for the New Year.

Whites

TorronTes – Distinct and complex, Torrontes is Argentina’s specialty white grape. Lively and vivacious, aromatic and perfumed, it is a tropical fruit salad with citrus notes and refreshing acidity. Torrontes is an incredibly versatile white, ever changing in a glass, and every producer plays differently with its tasting powers. Try this chameleon crowd pleaser with a spicy Asian or Thai dish. Crios Torrontes, Argentina $15.99 (La Boutique del Vino exclusive)

VIoGnIer – We almost lost this grape completely. At one point, there was merely 80 acres of total vineyard planting for the world. The majority of grapes came from a small area of Northern Rhone, in France called Condrieu. It’s thanks to Californian producers that this fantastic alternative to Chardonnay is alive and very well. Viognier is quite aromatic with ripe peach, apricot and summer floral notes making it a refreshing and enjoyable white wine. Excellent on its own, as an aperitif or paired with roasted chicken stuffed with apricots and Brie cheese. McManis Viognier, California $ 20.99 (specialty wine stores)

Reds

TeMPrAnILLo – The signature red wine from Spain is gaining strength in our Canadian market, one of the best values in the world of wine, today. Easy to enjoy on its own, un-oaked versions

offer bright and fresh red fruit flavours. Oaked versions offer more complex notes including dried strawberries, black cherry, plum, tobacco and leather. Food pairings are so easy with this grape and can be enjoyed with charcuterie platters, seafood, grilled or braised meats. I would recommend pairing this wine with life! Both should be enjoyed together. Beronia Rioja Reserva, Spain $23.99 (Manitoba Liquor Marts) MerLoT – The long lost darling grape from California was sabotaged by the iconic film SIDEWAYS and never really recovered. Similar attributes to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlots are deep in colour and rich flavours of plum, blackberry and cassis. What you may not know is that the magic of a Merlot is in its finish, with the ever so elegant, smooth and velvety tannins. Best of all, you can find great quality at reasonable prices with a bottle of Merlot.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Match this grape with grilled steak and great friends. Esser Merlot Monterey, California $19.99 (specialty wine stores) MoUrVeDre – Originally from Spain, where it is known as Monastrell, Mourvedre is also known as Mataro in Australia and a major blending component in the GSM (Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre) styles of wine from the Châteauneuf du Pape region in France. Mourvedre delivers expressive flavours of dark fruits, purple violets with cracked black pepper spice and smoky bacon notes. It is a perfect accompaniment to your first barbecued rib dinner. El Petit Bonhomme, Spain $13.99 (Manitoba Liquor Marts) Every now and then you should take flight, step away from your wine comfort zone. Wine Not make 2015 a new grape resolution?

The Culinary Creations of Calabria on Corydon Avenue By Tonya Lambert Photos Shawn Fillion

ano a Mano is a delightfully welcoming restaurant on Corydon Avenue in the heart of Little Italy. by Chef Dustin Pajak and you will feel like you are actually in this sun-kissed region of southern Italy. Since Calabrese cuisine is heavily influenced by its geography, seafood is found in many Calabrese dishes. found on the Mano a Mano menu, which also includes various imported cheeses from the goats and cows who thrive in the region’s many mountains. Over the centuries, many different people have come to Calabria and left their influence on the cuisine. Hints of honey, like in Pajak’s renowned Godfather pizzas, are a reminder of the ancient

Greek settlers. The eggplant found in many Calabrese dishes, such as the chef’s calzone, was introduced to the area by Arabs, while the couscous used by Pajak in his innovative pickerel main course is due to Albanian influence on the region. Calabrese cuisine is the most flavourful in Italy; it is a veritable of explosion of flavours, textures and aromas. Often, a single dish will contain a tantalizing blend of sweet, sour and savoury altogether. At Mano a Mano, Pajak has taken the traditional Calabrese ingredients and combined them with local favourites to create amazing new dishes in which you can taste the best of the Old World along with the promise of the New, resulting in a menu that is both traditional and whimsical at the same time. Mano a Mano specializes in the pizza and pasta popular throughout Italy. Their wood-fired pizzas are topped with traditional Calabrese ingredients like

salami, ham, onions, garlic and other spices. The many pasta dishes with their different shapes and colourful sauces are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate. There is something for everyone at Mano a Mano. The menu always has plenty of options for vegans, vegetarians and celiacs. Any of their pastas can be made with gluten-free noodles upon request and every effort is made to accommodate all dietary restrictions. Simply let Chef Pajak know and he will adapt the dish accordingly. The menu at Mano a Mano changes four times a year to take advantage of seasonal ingredients. In the summer, the restaurant grows many of their own vegetables on a acre garden plot. Chef Pajak loves fresh ingredients and knowing the effort gardening takes, is careful to utilize as much of each plant as possible. For example, did you know that the fruit,

flowers and vines of the tomato plant are all edible? Pajak is careful to incorporate each into his culinary creations. Come by Mano a Mano any day of the week and sample some Calabrian cuisine with a twist. In the summer, enjoy your meal on one of their two beautiful patios just like in sunny southern Italy.

Alexander Mickelthwate: A Decade Behind the Baton with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra By Tori Stafford Photos courtesy of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

When he first came to the city as a guest conductor for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Mickelthwate was struck by the how nice the climate was. “

I

t was March or April, and the weather was beautiful – warm and sunny,” Mickelthwate says with a laugh. “Nobody told me anything about the winters!” The German-born conductor had previously served as the associate conductor for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and, over two years, he took on a number of guest conducting roles across North America. But once he’d experienced Winnipeg, he knew it would be a good fit for him and his family. “When you are a guest conductor, you usually have a week or so with the orchestra. It’s like a blind date with 70 musicians,” he describes. “You don’t know them, they don’t know you, and it is kind of this chemistry thing… and it was a real blast here in Winnipeg! The program was creative and it felt really comfortable.” Delighted as he was to be brought on at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) as full-time music director, Mickelthwate admits he recognized the amount of work that needed to be done; while the

orchestra itself was fantastic, WSO as an organization was hurting financially and lacking community support. “There were many, many things that needed improvement, and lots to rebuild: relationships with the city, media, sponsors, and audiences,” he recalls. “But building these relationships is exactly what I love to do.” Mickelthwate’s passion for the WSO and connecting with the people of Winnipeg translated into community outreach programs and events, more approachable musical programming, and an overall increase in appreciation for what the orchestra brings and offers to the city. Fast forward nine years through a variety of international guest performers, wonderful concerts and high-profile events. With interest and appreciation growing, WSO was invited to play at the world-famous Carnegie Hall. Attended by dignitaries from the city, province and country, Mickelthwate recalls his sense of elation: “It was unbelievable. For me, the important thing was seeing the fixed

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

relationships that were really broken when I started. There had been a lot of healing. It took nine years to come to that point. It was really, really amazing.” Now, entering his 10th concert season as the music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Mickelthwate looks forward to maintaining those relationships and continuing to delight audiences in Winnipeg. He points to a pops concert featuring Canadian icon Rufus Wainwright and the 25th anniversary of the renowned Winnipeg New Music Festival as just a couple of highlights for the 2015-2016 concert season. But for Mickelthwate, one of the biggest highlights of the coming year is the opportunity to include two top romantic Austrian composers, Mahler and Bruckner, on the same program. “It rarely happens that an orchestra includes music from both of those giants in one season,” he says with excitement. “I am definitely looking forward to the coming season, and staying on with the orchestra for at least a little longer.”

KING + BANNATYNE

Annual Dining Guide

Where Classic Sandwiches Collide with Mouth Watering Meats Adjacent to Old Market Square Park is a sandwich shop overflowing with flavour. King + Bannatyne is a locally owned restaurant whose name is its address. Adjacent to Old Market Square Park is a sandwich shop overflowing with flavour. King + Bannatyne is a locally owned restaurant whose name is its address. Unlike traditional sandwich shops though, King + Bann, as it is often referred, is gourmet, mouthwatering sandwiches piled high with slow roasted meats in an open, easy environment. Three classic sandwich options remain on the menu seasonally: herb roast porchetta, the meatball and the river city brisket — all hearty favourites. But there is something for everyone here, from the vegetarian grilled cheese to the weekly specials. Customers are encouraged to check out Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for weekly features.

Everything, including the mustard, mayo, spice rubs and pickles, are made in house with the breads baked fresh every day and delivered from the popular Lisbon Bakery. True to the architecture of the historic building, with exposed brick, iron and woodwork, the décor speaks to a philosophy of things that are simply well made right down to the cutting boards each sandwich is served upon. With quality and taste top of mind, the sides are as tasty as the mains — from homemade soup to tangy coleslaw, and the restaurant is licensed. At King + Bannatyne, after just one bite you’ll be coming back for more.

A Taste of the Mediterranean in the Great White North Photos by Shawn Fillion

Originally a neighbourhood deli, and then the location of the first restaurant opened by Boston Pizza, Olympia Diner is nestled in a quiet residential neighbourhood at the western edge of Winnipeg. One of the best-kept secrets in the city, Olympia Diner serves some of the tastiest authentic Greek food around. Known for their moussaka, souvlaki and Mediterranean chicken, the fully licensed restaurant serves lunch, dinner and features daily specials. Purchased in 2000 by the Spiridakos family, son Andrew took over the restaurant two years ago and has been hard at work since fulfilling his late father’s dream, one satisfied customer at a time. His sister, Tracy Spiridakos, a successful actress, helps out in the diner when she’s in town. A recurring character on the show Bates Motel, she is best known for her role in the recent show, Revolution, and feature film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. With a welcoming atmosphere and great food, Olympia Diner is a great spot to enjoy a meal on the patio this summer. Their delicious food is also available for delivery online.

hen it comes to luxury and decadence, no city does it like Las Vegas. It’s a glittering global tourism mecca with hotel suites, spas and shopping to meet the needs of the worldliest traveller.

Luxury Suites

The city is teeming with luxury highroller suites that celebrities frequent on a regular basis. The Palms features the Real World Suite, which was home to the cast of MTV’s Real World: Las Vegas. Qua Baths and Spa at Caesars Palace offers the Laconium Room (providing ultra-heat therapy), the Arctic Ice Room (complete with snow falling from above) and a Tea Room staffed by a sommelier skilled at pairing herbal beverages with your chosen treatment. Spa treatments are no longer just for daytime, either. For example, AMP Afterhours at The Palms is designed to serve just one privileged couple or person at a time. Guests can have the entire spa to themselves. Lingerie-clad nail technicians treat guests to the platinum pedicure in a candle-lit spa while they sip Cristal champagne and enjoy appetizers.

Decadent Shopping penthouse equipped with a bowling alley is available at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The Chairman Suite at the Spa Tower at Bellagio features a waterfall, three fireplaces and remote controls for everything from the drapes to the lights to the music. MGM Grand’s Skylofts include pool tables, plasma screens, private chefs, infinity bathtubs, spa butlers, music butlers and much more. Just months ago, some of the finest and most lavish Las Vegas suites from Caesars Entertainment were accessed only by celebrities and the casino’s high rollers. But with the launch of its new Anthology collection, the pinnacle of luxury and exclusivity is brought directly

to paying guests. Each of the suites, in hotels like The Cromwell or Nobu Hotel, narrates its own unique story. From lavish amenities and stylish furnishings to private pool parties and glamorous movie star history, there’s nary an unrealized possibility.

Unique Spa Treatments

If you want to be pampered in style, there is no better destination than Las Vegas, where you can find a variety of relaxing spas and unique spa treatments at nearly every resort. he Pawsh Dog is the perfect home-away-from-home for your pampered pooch. The premier facility in Manitoba for all aspects of canine care, The Pawsh Dog offers an amazing array of services at its three Winnipeg locations. The Pawsh Dog was developed as a place for dogs to receive the attention, care and social interaction they need when their owners are away from home. Dogs are social creatures and regular interaction with others is as important for them as it is for people. They thrive around other animals and people. Left home alone day after day, dogs can become depressed and lethargic. Their health can suffer from a lack of exercise, and without socialization with other

dogs and people there is a chance of inappropriate behaviour when out for a walk. In 2009, Laurel Skuba, a professional dog trainer and handler, established the first The Pawsh Dog. Two additional locations opened in 2012 and, in 2013, the wellness centre was founded. Featuring the only warm water swimming pool for dogs in the province, the wellness centre also includes a matted exercise area

complete with balance discs, peanut balls and a doggy treadmill. A range of aquatic fitness classes are offered from learn-toswim to geriatric swim. Hydrotherapy treatments are available to help dogs recover from surgery or for other health issues. Massage sessions are on offer to improve your dog’s muscle tone and flexibility. Sources tell us that exciting new changes are underway at the wellness centre! Soon, there will be even more ways to enhance your precious pet’s health and wellbeing at The Pawsh Dog. The Pawsh Dog also has a luxury hotel. Staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, The Pawsh Dog hotel allows your debonair dog to enjoy a luxury staycation while you’re away on business or vacation. Your dashing dog will have its own separate room and round-the-clock supervision. Days will be spent in The Pawsh Dog day camp playing with furry friends in the many play centres, doing crafts and going on regular walks. Healthy meals, tasty treats and bottled water will be provided. Stays of three or more nights include a complimentary bath and salon treatment. A pet taxi service provides pick up and drop off services as needed. The Pawsh Dog’s salon and spa is home to an amazingly accomplished group of groomers, skilled at working with a wide variety of breeds. People from all over bring their handsome hounds here seeking the sophisticated styling services offered by these talented groomers, whose artistry even extends to colouring, nail painting and stenciling. The Pawsh Dog team and their fabulous four-legged friends can be found at many fun-filled community events. Join The Pawsh Dog team at Paws in Motion, the Winnipeg Pet Expo, the Manitoba Pet Expo, various dog shows and other canine-centred events. can simply be lowered with the deck, allowing them to enjoy a healthier and more active lifestyle. Swimming has long been exalted for its health benefits. Thanks to buoyancy, it is a great workout that reduces impact and stress placed on the body that can arise with activities like running. Swimming uses the large muscle groups, strengthening the whole body. Regular swimming provides better blood-sugar control and reduces the risk of diabetes. It also improves lung capacity, brain and heart function, and even flexibility. In children, learning to swim has shown an increase in motor skills while combining physical activity and fun.

hen selecting a backyard pool, technology probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Fortunately for homeowners, advancements in this industry now allow for a plethora of unique options. A recent flurry of innovation has given rise to moveable pool floors — systems that solve many of the age-old problems associated with having an in-ground pool. Much more than simply a pool, these systems can create an entirely new outdoor lifestyle for homeowners of all ages. Moveable pool floors, hidden pools or invisible pools — as the trendsetters have labelled them — consist of a hydraulic system that raises and lowers the pool floor. When fully raised, the pool completely disappears, allowing for extra

space and added safety as the system can be locked with a key and pass code. The space becomes accessible only while supervised, reducing the possibility of accidents. Backyard pools are often seen as a hazard, requiring fences and safety protocols. According to Statistics Canada, children are five times more likely to drown in private pools. The variable depths of this new pool system allow for swimming fun for all ages and skill levels, creating a shallow wading pool, a mid-depth pool for those just learning to swim, or a full depth pool perfect for swim and play. The invisible pool also allows people with mobility concerns, whether from age or disability, to enjoy swimming again. By removing the barrier of climbing in and out of the pool, these swimming enthusiasts

HOUSE & HOME

The true beauty of an invisible pool is the urban development factor. In densely packed cities and suburban areas, homeowners often need to make a choice between having a pool, yard or entertainment space. With the invisible pool, you can go from swimming in the morning to enjoying a deck or patio for a party in no time at all. It provides homeowners with the best of both worlds in a small yard. Often clad in tile or a composite decking, this floor provides the ultimate entertainment space. The application has even been extended to indoor pools in both commercial and residential settings, so owners can enjoy the benefits of swimming and added square footage year round. Certain hidden pool systems even open via a sliding mechanism moving under a deck panel, allowing for a turf covering to create the ultimate grassy oasis for pets and kids. The limits to this new backyard technology are as endless as your imagination. With the right company and engineer, an invisible pool can be any shape, size and material. Homeowners can also incorporate a number of luxury items to make their cutting-edge pool the envy of the neighbourhood, including musical massage, a current for lap swimming, LED projection for a therapeutic light show, even fountain or fire pit elements. When selecting the right pool, it is important to appraise your lifestyle and future plans. Whether finishing off a dream home or making an investment in the property ladder, the right pool system can add value to any home.

hen you build a backyard oasis, you’ll also create memories with family and friends and a haven from today’s fast-paced society. Familyoriented Winnipeggers, who don’t have time to travel or go to the cottage, turn to the professionals at Oasis Leisure Centre for help. For the last 15 years, Oasis Leisure Centre has been designing, building and installing swimming pools in backyards and major aquatic centres across the province. In fact, their very first job was the all-encompassing Steinbach Aquatic Centre in Steinbach, MB. This fantastic aquatic park features a junior Olympic pool, two water slides, a one-metre diving board, a leisure pool, lazy river, hot tub and more. But it wasn’t the first time owners Glenn Storozuk and Len Verdenik got their feet wet in the business of building swimming pools. They started Oasis Leisure Centre in March 2000 with decades of pool service and construction experience between them. They soon became the onsite pool contractors for all the YMCAs in Brandon, MB, and Winnipeg; they installed the beautiful pool and spa at the Victoria Inn and helped plumb the renovation of the Kildonan Park pool. Storozuk and Verdenik were determined to set themselves apart by giving customers the best installation and ownership experience with their pools and spas. They brought on the most experienced staff in the business to help them and used many of their commercial techniques in building residential inground pools, making Oasis Leisure Centre the premier installer of inground pools in Winnipeg. using the award-winning Pool Studio software. The customers can see exactly how the pool looks in the backyard before the project begins. Oasis will finish the project with concrete or stamped concrete pool decking, patio pavers or any other custom-styled work required.

When customers first come in to discuss a new pool project, the staff at Oasis will show them photos of previous work, including above ground, semi-inground and inground pools; or together they’ll look at photos that have inspired the customer. While there are approximately 30 styles of inground swimming pools in various sizes pre-done and ready to install, Oasis can customize or create any design.

Homeowner Jeremy Warnick says he and his wife, Treena, were concerned they might have to move in order to build the backyard oasis of their dreams. Then they met Lawrence at Oasis Leisure Centre. “He worked patiently with us for hours on end to design a backyard that would blow us away,” says Warnick.

Although the building process went on longer than anticipated due to weather conditions, workload and the complexities of the project, which included cantilevered edges and RicoRock waterfalls, the final result was spectacular. He says, “The key is the relationship and open communication we have with the technicians and staff that has developed into more of a friendship than anything else.”

Oasis Leisure Centre also sells hot tubs that range from plug-n-play models to larger swim spas that allow for swim-inplace. Five years ago, Oasis was chosen to be the exclusive carrier in Manitoba of the number one brand of hot tubs, Hot Spring Spas. It’s one of the most advanced technological hot tubs available featuring groundbreaking programmable salt water systems and remote monitoring systems. Hot Spring Spas is the only company that has an engineered salt water system and the only worldwide remote monitoring system of its hot tubs. Homeowners can use an app on their phone or tablet that allows them to remotely monitor their spa’s function with the Connextion system. The system is also used by staff at Oasis Leisure Centre to monitor their customers’ hot tubs. When they’re away from home, staff will make sure that if there are any interruptions in function, they will go out and service the spa immediately so it doesn’t freeze and cause more damage.

Lawrence says, “It’s very important to have remote monitoring in our climate. It’s like having a home alarm except for your hot tub.” Hot Spring Spas also feature a unique modem massage jet that rolls up and down the back, simulating massage therapy. “Once people use this,” says Lawrence, “they never go back to another hot tub.” Hot Spring Spas is a publicly-traded company represented in more than 70 countries around the world and has sold millions of hot tubs. “They have a transparent business philosophy unique in the pool and hot tub business,” says Lawrence. “We are happy to be partnered with them.” Homeowner Nancy Olson was thrilled with the service she got after buying a hot tub from Oasis Leisure Centre. “The technicians were more than helpful in explaining everything they were doing,” says Olson. “Then a follow-up technician came to teach us about the chemicals and which system would be best for us. He spent the rest of the time ensuring we were comfortable with all the settings on the tub from the temperatures to lights. We would highly recommend Oasis to anyone!” In both pool and hot tub installations, the emerging trend is maintenance-free products and systems. This includes saltwater pools that generate all the chlorine you need and robotic pool cleaners you can simply drop in to clean the floor. Then there’s automation that allows you to adjust all the settings on your inground pool from an iPhone or Android phone. “We are the number one promoters of automation and ease of operation in Winnipeg,” says Lawrence. “We’ve been on the forefront of digital automation for inground pools for years. Derrett was one of 20 people lucky enough to take part in a “Designer Day” with Victoria Redshaw, founder and lead trend forecaster of Scarlet Opus. She learned about four main colour and design looks homeowners will be moving towards in 2015 and 2016. Many of these trends take root in historical influences. “Due to the unstable economy during the last few years, people want something that makes them feel reassured,” says Derrett. “People are very busy and plugged-in all the time, too. They need a place to decompress.” The first trend satisfies the need for both comfort and glamour by marrying earthiness with luxurious couture qualities defined by the pale beauty of blonde hardwoods such as liveable, durable oak. Using flooring products with wide, long planks and grey, mediumtone or white-washed matte finishes like those from Mirage Floors will bring this soothing look to light.

“This expression is natural,” says Derrett. “As if the wood has just been oiled and laid down. Mirage has it all; they are a very trend savvy brand.” Going in a completely different direction is the macro-trend of using surface finishes, which are both tough and inviting, glamorous and strong. Here, dark, luxurious and battle-ready palettes with metallic patinas are inspired by Medieval, Elizabethan and Baroque design.

Reveal features organic waves of gold, random inclusions and markings that add glamour to any location. Clients are using this on feature walls, back-splashes and ceilings over dining tables. To achieve a slick, ultramodern aesthetic with provocative tribal undertones, look at area rugs with animal prints. Kymo’s Body and Soul carpets are hair-on-hide with metallic colours painted on patches of bare leather. They are great way to incorporate a trend with minimal expense.

Ann Sacks Tile, which is sold exclusively by The Floor Show in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, has two products that particularly suit this trend: the Lux and Reveal tiles. Lux is a rich, soft, luminous blend of travertine and metallics. Gold leaf, silver and platinum have been applied to the travertine to create an aged, patinaed look, which shines on fireplaces, feature walls, bars and other wall applications.

Investing in Mafi Wood Floors, an Austrian brand specializing in baked wood, can give you beautiful, rich, permanent colour that runs all the way through. “The dark espresso colour has been popular in flooring for a while,” explains Derrett, “but in a different way. The new trend is for wide planks with an oiled, matte finish and plenty of character in the wood.”

Fireplaces as Works oF art

When Only The BesT Will DO By Brandi Parnell

Leonardo da Vinci was a renaissance man, most famous for his iconic paintings of The Last Supper and Mona Lisa. He was a writer, a mathematician, an inventor and of course, an artist. So, it is no surprise the line of Davinci Custom Fireplaces chose the namesake of a man who was well ahead of his time.

xclusively available at Heat Saver Distributors, these upscale, customizable, modular fireplaces are more than aesthetically pleasing; they are works of art. With almost endless combinations, safe touch technology and available in 12, 20, 30 and 36 inch glass heights, the Da Vinci’s linear line of art is comprised of statement pieces for any room of your home. Available in seven viewing options, from single sided to see through to island — a 360 degree wrap-around fire view that can be enjoyed from any angle in the room — their iconic, contemporary designs range from conservative to elaborate and everything in between. With DaVinci, there are no design limitations. Predominantly sold to architects and designers, a Da Vinci fireplace will create a dynamic focal point with rich, vibrant dancing flames in your living room, bedroom, basement or even your bathroom. The renaissance of fireplaces, it is the perfect decorative addition to your family room or cottage. Best of all, non-heating Da Vinci products can be used all year round in any climate. In today’s chaotic world, more people are choosing to invest in their homes by creating coveted rooms that exceed anywhere else you could be. Like deluxe home theatre rooms or a luxurious ensuite, a glass bottom Da Vinci fireplace is the finishing touch for the ultimate in relaxation. Each custom fireplace is power vented which means flue gas is extracted from your home, so it can literally be installed anywhere. Perfect for restaurants, hotels or other large scale commercial projects too. Coming soon, DaVinci is working

on a heat recovery system, allowing a homeowner to drop heat into other parts of your home. Best of all, any finishing materials can be installed right up to the glass and each unit may be placed on any type of flooring without damage. Of course a Da Vinci fireplace is the perfect compliment to any new build, but it is also ideal for any home. Total length limited only by your imagination and as few as two people can install it. Each unit comes with LED under lighting available in five different colours. Because you can start in one room and continue in another, and because it can be a double sided peninsula or a three foot high, cool to the touch piece of live art, it is no surprise Da Vinci was the winner of the Vesta Award for Best New Gas Fireplace in 2014 — the highest honour in the industry. Every fireplace comes with glass bottom beads and choice of media. Built to order, these breathtaking fireplaces are the future of fire.

HOUSE & HOME

Henry David Thoreau said, “The fire is the main comfort of the camp, whether in summer or winter, and is about as ample at one season as at another. It is as well for cheerfulness as for warmth and dryness.” Be prepared to be drawn in, mesmerized and completely taken by the artistry, innovation and striking presence of a Da Vinci fireplace.

looring is fashion!” says Ward Friesen, owner of Friesen Floor and Decor. Friesen has been in the flooring business for more than three decades and has seen many changes take place. “Flooring has really evolved,” he recalls. “At one time flooring options were limited. We sold carpet, tile and a bit of hardwood. Now flooring has become a key element in home decor and fashion.” Friesen’s enthusiasm heightens as he tells of the specialized services Friesen Floor and Decor offers their customers. “We do a lot of custom work for our clients. Whatever they are looking for, our sales team and installers will help them — from choosing the design and recommending the right products, to installing it precisely.”

Whether the client is looking for in floor heating in their bathroom, custom wood stairs, a specific pattern designed in tile, kitchen flooring to accentuate a backsplash or anything else they can think of, Friesen Floor and Decor will take care of the customer’s request with craftsman-style professionalism. The only limit is the imagination of the homeowner. Not many flooring stores have the level of expertise found at Friesen Floor and Decor. Friesen can’t say enough good things about his team, “Our installers are clean-cut, family-oriented gentlemen who are dedicated to working and communicating with the customer to get the job done right.” He goes on to say many of the installers have been with the business for more than 10 years and some for over 20.

Also working closely with the customer is the sales team, which includes Stephanie Matkowski, Tova Williams-Belliveau and Friesen’s daughter, LaDawn Friesen. This dynamic group of young professionals put customer satisfaction as their No. 1 priority. The sales team will walk the customer through the store and go over the different product options. Friesen Floor and Decor is pleased to offer many high quality Canadian products. They are especially proud of their selection of stunning woods from Eastern Canada. Once the homeowner has made a choice, they receive samples to take home to determine the right colour and style in their home. A member of the sales team then goes onsite to take measurements and give a free estimate. Because the busy lives of their customers is always a

consideration, prompt turnaround time is important. Friesen notes clients will also be advised of how to properly care for their new flooring after installation. He goes on to say if there is an install or product issue, the team is quick to look after it right away.

our yard is a reflection of your lifestyle. From decks, patios and ponds to the choice of colours and plant species, your property’s outdoor area can dramatically enhance the enjoyment of your home.

94

FineLifestyles

But creating your dream yard can be challenging, especially when it requires various skill sets. Designers and installers are key components in landscaping. Decks and fences need woodworkers. Hot tubs require electricians. Managing all these specialists is

HOUSE & HOME

a time consuming task, and can make for a chaotic project. Fortunately for residents of Winnipeg and surrounding areas, Proscapes — a full-service commercial and residential landscaping company — can take care of your entire project.

Launched in 2009, Proscapes provides all aspects of landscape design and construction. Hardscaping services include stone patios, driveways, retaining walls, stone and mulch installation, and concrete curbing. Softscaping services range from sodding and seeding to garden and shrub bed construction as well as planting. Water features such as ponds and fountains, landscape lighting, and decks and fences can all be created with Proscapes. Owner Christopher Proviniciano says the company prides itself on providing custom landscape designs, working with each individual client to create the yard that best suits their tastes and lifestyle. “We make sure our clients are 100 per cent satisfied,” says Proviniciano. “When the neighbours are paying the owners compliments on the project and the owner is proud of the job, we know we got it right.”

Proscapes serves a wide range of clients, from homeowners in new developments needing their entire yard landscaped to owners of older homes looking to update the property. While many landscaping companies offer only plant-related services, Proscapes’ network of specialists includes woodworkers, electricians and other industry professionals. This enables the company to provide its clients with every service required for landscape completion, making them a one-stop shop. “We are essentially a general contractor for your yard,” says Proviniciano. Interested in how the Proscapes team can enhance your property? The business offers complimentary estimates. Team members can meet with you at your home, learn your vision, discuss landscaping options, and typically give you an estimate within 48 hours. “If people aren’t sure of what they want, we start by asking questions such as

HOUSE & HOME

what they want to use their yard for, if they mind cutting grass, and how much time they want to spend outdoors.” With these insights, the team can determine what kind of landscape design would be ideal for you. Along with landscaping, Proscapes provides year round maintenance, including snow removal. The company also offers excavation, hauling, parking lot sweeping and parking lot line painting. “We provide the highest quality products and the most dependable service to see people’s dreams become a reality,” says Proviniciano. “We always try to go over and above for our clients.” Proscapes Unit 3-1761 Pembina Hwy Winnipeg 204.880.6585 proscapes@shaw.ca www.winnipeglandscapingpros.com

Suncoast Enclosures

here’s nothing quite like the great outdoors, but when it comes to inclement weather, insects and other irritants, enjoyment can quickly turn into frustration. Suncoast Enclosures has the answer. With their aesthetically pleasing and durable sunrooms, they promise homeowners outdoor enjoyment from inside the comfort of their own home. “With our rooms, you are connected to the outdoors while enjoying the comforts of home,” says Scott Benson, owner of Suncoast Manitoba and regional manager of Suncoast Enclosures in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. “Your backyard can become a second living space — with amenities such as an entertainment unit, dining room or fireplace — while

bringing in as much of the outdoors as you want through your windows.” Suncoast offers both screen rooms as well as three season rooms. If you want to enjoy your existing outdoor space without insects and other outside elements, the screen room offers protection without feeling enclosed by a roof or walls. “Screen rooms are a great addition to a hot tub or pool,” he adds. “They keep insects and leaves out of the water without closing it off from the sun or rain.” The best thing about the screen rooms is you can watch the stars and enjoy the breeze without the irritation of insects. These rooms utilize the high-tension screens as the roof panels, which are engineered for harsh Manitoba winters.

HOUSE & HOME

Suncoast’s three-season room is the perfect sunroom, offering an open, bright space with 75 per cent ventilation with the windows open and an extended enjoyment of the seasons when they are closed. “As with all of our rooms, they’re custom built,” Benson says. “Many people find they can use the rooms for seven or eight months of the year with a small heat source.” Benson and his crew pride themselves on offering an excellent experience for customers. “We provide prompt and reliable service; we do it right the first time,” he says. “We spend the extra time to get it done right. We never take shortcuts, and in the end we just want the customer to be satisfied. These are values I instill in everybody who works with us.” Suncoast Enclosures commonly have a mansard roof style, setting them apart from the classic shed style sunroom that becomes very low in the middle of the room. The mansard roof is sloped, and the look blends well with most styles of home. “This gives our

enclosures a modern and clean look,” says Benson. “They are like no other sunroom on the market.” Suncoast Enclosures are an excellent addition to any home, cottage, pool or business, and Benson has happy customers all over Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. “I would definitely recommend not only Suncoast, but your company because of the integrity of your work and your level of service. I already have done so to many people,” says Heather White, a Suncoast client in Winnipeg. “I love having the extra useable living space outside — unaccosted by the bugs — even in rainy weather and earlier/later in the season.” To book a viewing, contact Suncoast Manitoba today. PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD By Brook Thalgott

Today, businesses face far more risks than in the past, such as business interruption, cash flow and liquidity, reputation, regulatory changes and weak economic climate. Now, businesses face another growing threat — cyber risk. No company, no matter how big, is immune to issues from the virtual world. Just ask Sony Pictures and Target. Both suffered massive security breaches that affected both customers and employees alike. In today’s connected world, businesses must be aware of the risks posed in cyberspace, and how to protect against threats.

102

FineLifestyles

Winnipeg

A

ccording to the Globe and Mail, cyber attacks have already hit more than one third of Canadian businesses. Gaining access via anything connected to the Internet, these well-funded and sophisticated criminal enterprises will attack businesses of any size and cause serious damage. Because the risk is constantly evolving, and the legal system is usually playing catch-up to technology, businesses have to protect themselves from all angles. With smaller businesses (less than 100 people) often the target, it really isn’t the massive multinationals alone that need to worry. While cyber risk insurance can help, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. Cyber risk needs to be addressed across the whole business. An enterprise cyber risk management strategy is a must for any business these days, and senior management needs to be front and centre in planning and implementation. Where the IT department was the gatekeeper, now the whole business needs to be aware of the risks presented by cyber crime. First, businesses need to address what exactly is at risk from cyber attacks. It may be customer information, proprietary information on products or services, or communications between employees. The big question to ask is what will a hacker find valuable if they get in? The risk isn’t just financial — it’s reputational. When Sony Pictures

was hacked in 2014, they not only lost money over the release of the film The Interview, they also suffered serious reputational damage by the leak of sensitive emails between senior executives. Businesses must ask what needs to be protected and why. It’s not just senior management that needs to be involved in the development of a cyber risk strategy. A strategy should assess the current plan and practices and where improvements are needed, determine a monitoring process and what the procedures are if attacked. From the top down, the whole organization plays a part in keeping the business protected. Employees need to be educated about their responsibilities in minimizing risk, with a robust policy and compliance guidelines. Internal and external networks need to be assessed on an ongoing basis, with full knowledge of who has access to what and where everything is located. A well-planned and executed cyber risk strategy will help your business become cyber resilient. As the world becomes more and more connected, the opportunities for businesses grow — as do the risks. While we’re often prepared for the traditional business threats, we may neglect the ones that come from our connectivity. However, with a robust, well-planned and executed strategy, cyberspace risks can be mitigated.

Taste the Difference of Farm-Fresh Ice Cream By Tori Stafford Photos Shawn Fillion

For many, ice cream is not just a delightfully cool and tasty indulgence or a great ending to a wonderful meal. Ice cream also drums up fond memories from childhood as the creamy treat that brought smiles on a hot summer day.

F

or Lisa Dyck, ice cream is all that and more. Wanting to replicate the fresh, rich and creamy dessert she recalls from days gone by, Dyck began her journey towards becoming Manitoba’s first producerprocessor of farm fresh ice cream in 2012. It all started with a gift from her family.

104

FineLifestyles

Winnipeg

“I received an ice cream maker as a gift,” Dyck remembers. She was eager to create ice cream without additives or fillers. “I realized the ice cream I made using all-natural ingredients was one of the best things I had ever tasted, and I began sharing it with family and friends. I started making ice cream in July, and

BUSINESS

by October it was already on a menu in a restaurant.” Dyck laughs recalling how quickly the popularity of her ice cream grew. As the co-owner of Cornell Dairy, a second generation family dairy farm near Anola she co-owns with her husband,

the popularity of her ice cream was made even sweeter by the knowledge the cream and milk she used to make it came straight from the family farm. After speaking with experts and doing research and development at the University of Manitoba, Dyck launched the province’s first handcrafted artisan ice cream made by a dairy farmer: Cornell Creme. Created using all natural ingredients — Dyck literally juices and boils thousands of raspberries for her raspberry white chocolate flavour — Cornell Creme ice cream is available in up to 12 mouth-watering flavours, including vanilla bean, velvety chocolate truffle, lemon meringue, strawberry and cream, raspberry white chocolate and the innovative malty ale pail, a beer-inspired flavour. While Dyck has plans for additional flavours, at the moment she can hardly keep the current flavours on the shelves of the 14 stores in Manitoba where it is available (visit the website for a list of stores that stock Cornell Creme. Additionally, Cornell Creme is on the menu of a variety of restaurants around the province, including Fairmont Winnipeg’s illustrious restaurant, The Velvet Glove. What makes Cornell Creme ice cream even better is customers know where the entire product comes from — seed to spoon. The dairy cows raised on feed grown directly on the farm at Cornell Dairy are raised on the same thing used to hand-pack each litre of Cornell Creme ice creams: love. “For my husband, his cows are like family. They work for him, and he knows he’s got to treat them right if he wants them to produce quality milk,” Dyck relates. “We are just so pleased to be able to use our dairy in a product like this, and it’s just wonderful to see how much people really love our ice cream.”

or as long as there have been grandmothers, there have been pies. It is a dessert that has marked many an occasion, from Sunday dinners to fall suppers, from holidays to celebrations of life. America has claimed it as its benchmark for patriotism; grandmas use it to remedy just about anything. In fact, one bite into a piece of pie and suddenly you are 10 years old with skinned knees. Good, homebaked pie is the epitome of comfort food. “Plain and simple, pie makes people happy,” says Heather Daymond, the brainchild of the catchy, tongue-in-cheek brand, Shut Ur Pie Hole. Daymond bakes her pies in one-serving-sized Mason jars: This is dessert not meant for sharing! A home-grown success, Daymond has been baking pies since she was a young girl. In fact, for Daymond baking pies is her recipe for managing stress. A mature student, she used pastry as her vehicle to navigate her way through university. One week she brought her tasty treats to class, the next she had 50 orders. Her background is in public relations and marketing. One night after an evening with great friends and animated discussions about her business idea, she had named her company. Shortly thereafter, she entered Innovate Manitoba, a start up competition for promising entrepreneurs. That was merely one year ago. She not only garnered top prize, she built a fan base of people who take her pies to the office to eat with morning coffee, to friends’ dinner parties, and to shut-ins as a treat. Six different retail outlets stock Daymond’s pies. To date, she has sold more than 10,000 jars of pie and she is developing new locations to meet the

demand. She is thrilled with the evolution of her business: “I am living my joy,” she says happily. Daymond has shipped her pies all across Canada; they have honoured great people and have transported grown adults back in time. She makes everything from scratch using real butter, fresh fruit and local produce. “I love being at a market selling my pies, because I see the people walk by and notice my sign. Often they nudge the shoulder of whoever they’re with, laugh and come over to buy a jar,” she says. Her adorable packaging draws people in, and as soon as they dig into their chosen flavour they are loyal Shut Ur Pie Hole lovers. Available in family-sized pies too, flavours include apple, apple/cranberry/orange, Saskatoon, butter tart, pecan, cherry, strawberry rhubarb, lemon meringue,

banana cream and pumpkin. Shut Ur Pie Hole’s pie bar is available to cater almost any event. Better yet, the pie in a jar can be customized for an event and makes a lovely thank you gift at weddings. “I am so grateful to have my dessert served at such special occasions,” Daymond says sweetly. “One day I will publish a cookbook, sharing the proceeds of my passion with a deserving charity.” Random Acts of Pieness and Mother of the Year Award are just some of the ways Daymond reaches out to people in need of a dessert — an individual serving of pie not meant to be shared. hen Shana Robinson heard the song “Electric Lady” by Janelle Monae, she knew its title was the right name for her life coaching business. “It’s about being an independent strong women who isn’t like all the rest,” says Shana, founder of Electric Lady Coaching. “I’m a high energy person, and that comes through in my coaching style. People refer to me as the Electric Lady.” As a professional speaker, workshop facilitator and visionary coach, Shana guides people toward creating positive change in their life. Using a technique called Vision Mapping, she helps her clients identify the areas where they want to see change and gain clarity on the steps required to create that change. Her monthly workshop series “Re-brand You” has garnered high praise from participants such as Geraldine De Braune, who says, “Shana is brilliant at seeing through “clutter” and helping others envision their goals more clearly. Electric Lady services are available through individual coaching, “ReBrand You” workshops and speaking engagements. Shana says attending a “Re-Brand You” workshop is an excellent way to discover the benefits of coaching. “Participants begin to de-clutter their thoughts and become intentional about what they want to expand on in their personal vision, business vision and relationship vision.” Prior to the workshop, participants have a one-on-one phone call with Shana in which they share current challenges and what they wish to gain from “Re-Brand You.” These insights enable Shana to infuse the three-hour workshop with content specific to the group. “The “ReBrand You” workshop is about gaining a clearer concept of yourself, so you can make better decisions moving forward,” says Shana. She points to the example of a recent participant’s experience with Vision Mapping. “She wrote down

everything in her life that was bothering her and became clear on what was irrelevant, what she needed to let go of, and what she needed to do more inner work on. The process removed all the clutter of thoughts that were weighing her down.” Yvette Preston, who became a client of Electric Lady Coaching after attending “Re-Brand You,” says Shana creates space for sharing aspirations and vulnerabilities. “She highlighted common themes while validating each person’s individual experience,” says Yvette. “Shana’s ability to identify the small steps in an overwhelming big picture gave me the tools and incentive to attain my goals.” Shana provides guidance in both the professional and personal aspects of her clients’ paths, helping them leverage their strengths in transformative ways. “Electric Lady Coaching empowers people to look inward, drawing on their own truth,” says Shana. “This process is

combined with mentorship, so my clients are supported in how they choose to move forward.” Shana works with both men and women, including everyone from young professionals to those transitioning to their later years. No matter what your goals are, the Electric Lady is passionate about seeing you succeed. “I help people articulate what their vision is, connect that with their passion and make it actionable,” she says. “My approach is all about results.” Shana welcomes you to connect with her and find upcoming workshop dates on Facebook, at Electric Lady Coaching. The extreme temperatures and road salt can also cause permanent damage.” Regular detailing can keep the body of your automobile looking beautiful and your interior fresh. Laco recommends your vehicle be detailed twice yearly. “Usually spring and late fall are the best times to help get you ready for the harsher environments of summer and winter,” he advises. Laco notes their search for the best products is a key reason why Rebirth has been successful. Among these products is an innovative ceramic, antistatic and water resistant nano-coating. After celebrating five years in the industry, Rebirth offers paintless dent repair, paint protection film, window tinting, truck accessories and complete marine detailing services. Taking a trip? The Valet and Away service package allows you to have your car detailed while you are out of town. “Drop your vehicle off at the airport, and we will pick it up, detail it and return it to the airport in time for your arrival,” Laco comments. What started out as a university graduate’s vision has flourished into a dynamic detailing service that has earned a reputation for excellence. Take your vehicle in for a beauty treatment today!
