The Suncoast Enclosures Team

Attention Homeowners: Imagine a durable, versatile and attractive patio cover. One that delivers shade on hot days, protects your family from harmful UV rays and keeps your deck and outdoor furniture dry during a rainstorm. Suncoast Screen Enclosures will custom build your louvered roof as an addition to your home/business or as its own free-standing patio cover. Our built-in guttering system effectively channels away rain runoff to prevent flooding and structural damage. The louvers are operated by a hand-held remote which is charged by an efficient solar panel. Open the louvers slightly to increase ventilation, or a full 180 degrees allowing maximum sunlight into your home. Suncoast Screen Enclosures offers a screened-in, outdoor area that allows you to enjoy your deck, pool, spa or patio without the sense of being enclosed in an indoor space.

As the holiday season approaches, so too does the seemingly endless roster of parties. From work to family, holiday celebrations can add stress to an already busy schedule. So how do you survive this festive party season? With a little creativity and a healthy dose of style. Whether your style is classic and tailored or flirty and fun, here are some tips for maximizing your wardrobe’s party potential and embracing this season’s hottest trends.

E

veryone knows the power of the little black dress — versatile when paired with different accessories for a completely new look. But don’t feel obliged to stick with black; it is important not to discount colour. When choosing that perfect outfit don’t feel limited to traditional holiday colours like green and red — selecting a unique colour allows you to stand out from the crowd. Embracing your power colour can highlight your favourite personal features and provide a valuable confidence boost (this is an easy trick to get you in the party mood). This season’s fashion is dominated by texture, adding visual interest to otherwise classic silhouettes. Keep an eye out for lush velvets, striking beading and embroidery with a mix of sleeker materials, such as luxurious leathers. More revealing styles are taking a demure turn with lace and sheer overlays creating higher necklines, sleeves and added length. As usual, metallics are on trend for the season: whether it is via a dress or simply through accessories, a shimmering sheen provides the added wow factor to any look. When supplementing your wardrobe with new items keep longevity in mind. Ladies, look for dresses with multiway straps or reversible items that provide multiple

FASHION & WELLNESS

looks for less. Searching consignment shops for new-to-you items is also a great way to discover fantastic vintage and designer finds, often providing a look that no one else will have. Gents, layer cotton with wool to stay warm in the snow but cool during a lively party. Avoid seasonal socks and ties but embrace fun patterns or colours to express your inner fashionista. The easiest way to prepare for the party season is by transitioning everyday wardrobe staples into festive looks. Don’t feel limited to choosing a traditional dress for an event. Mix and match tops with skirts or pants; your favourite power suit can be party ready with simple additions like a sequinned top and a loose up-do to soften the look. Footwear can make all the difference when maximizing an outfit’s potential. Sexy stilettos, jewel encrusted flats and tall boots all paint a very different picture for the casual viewer from fierce to flamboyant. Holiday style isn’t limited to ugly sweaters, pyjamas or ultra formal attire. Being event ready is about showcasing your personal sense of style while dressing to impress for each occasion. Most importantly, when you’re getting ready for that cocktail party or to dance the night away comfort is key because nothing is more fashionable than great confidence.

BREWING UP A DAMN GOOD STORY Once again the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce chose wisely by inviting Manjit Minhas to speak at its recent business dinner. For years, the Chamber has been instrumental in bringing high quality speakers and successful business people to the city to inspire, educate and motivate the Yorkton and area residents. This year’s guest of petroleum-engineer-turnedbeer-baroness was an inspiration to all. Meet Manjit Minhas, a 34-year-old wife, mother, and highly successful and esteemed Canadian entrepreneur.

M

anjit founded Mountain Crest Liquors Inc. (MCLI) in Alberta at the ripe age of 19. MCLI produces, develops and markets 90 brands of spirits and beers manufactured by the Minhas Micro Distillery and The Minhas Craft Brewery (also owned by Manjit). In late 2002, she entered the Alberta beer market with her brother, Ravinder, and gave the big boys a run for their money with Mountain Crest Classic Lager, becoming the first successful beer company to enter Canada in decades. Manjit’s advice? “Be cautious, conservative and creatively take on the competition, but enjoy the experience.” Manjit’s passion and strong business ethics have led to continued growth and development of her company. She proudly states, “You have to know what you are good at and have passion.” In 2008, Manjit founded Minhas Creek

22

Brewing Company and entered the Manitoba and Saskatchewan markets. Today, she produces seven brands in the three Prairie Provinces, including her flagship beer, Minhas Creek Classic Lager. Manjit has single-handedly caused a stir in the Manitoba and Saskatchewan beer industries by gaining a large market share in such a short amount of time, thanks to her aggressive marketing and advertising techniques and pricing strategies. Many beer drinkers have welcomed her style of beer as a tasty alternative to the higherpriced domestic beers that presently dominate the market place. Manjit is the first brewer in Canada to voluntarily put a management warning on all her beer cans, which reads: “MANAGEMENT WARNING: Please do not drink and drive — ever. Expectant mothers should avoid drinking alcoholic products. Enjoy this product responsibly

— Respect yourself and others.” Her motivation for doing so stems from her role as a responsible brewer and feels it’s important to do her part to educate Canadians. Manjit and Ravinder purchased the second oldest U.S. brewery in 2006 and renamed it The Minhas Craft Brewery, officially making them the youngest brewery owners in the world. The Minhas

Craft Brewery is now the tenth largest in the world, and serves as the shipping origin for quality beers sent across the U.S., throughout Canada and overseas to 16 countries, including Japan and Korea. In 2012, Manjit and Ravinder opened a new brewery in Calgary called The Minhas Micro Brewery. From this facility they make world-class craft and specialty beers, such as a gluten-free beer. That

same year, the sister-brother duo also opened the Minhas Micro Distillery, which distills and bottles premium spirits and liqueurs such as Maya Horchata and Platinum 10x distilled vodka. Manjit states, “You have to have courage to succeed. Fight the good fight and stay in it for the long run.” As a trailblazer in the beer industry, last year Manjit launched Uptown Girl, a beer marketed and made

exclusively for women. It has unique packaging, no aftertaste, is low in calories and carbs and has a unique, successful marketing campaign. The title of Manjit’s book, Brewing Up a Damn Good Story, serves as the appropriate title for the story of her life; Manjit continues to create a life story to last generation after generation.

Holiday Planning for families Tips for an Easy & Stress-Free Festive Season By Erin Legg

The Christmas and new year season is quickly arriving. This is the time of year when we embrace our family and friends and celebrate togetherness. Between planning your own hosting duties, preparing for a holiday gala and the regular everyday details in between, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Here are a few tips to keep you on track during this busy season of entertaining and festivities.

26

FineLifestyles

Parkland Saskatchewan

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Don't be Left Empty-Handed As you welcome guests into your home, swing by a neighbour’s for a cocktail party or attend the corporate gathering, give something to show your thanks. Stock up with a few bottles of wine, decorative candles or even some locally made chocolate or specialty baked goods to offer neighbours, acquaintances and party hosts.

Keep Your Style Don’t be left with nothing to wear when a party sneaks up on you! Invest in some new cocktail dresses, ties or jackets so you always have something on hand. Remember to drop off your favourite festive outfits at the dry cleaner for a quick outfit change between the office and the seasonal get-together.

Plan Your Holiday Menu Order your turkey, ham or specialty food in advance to ensure the menu you’ve planned for your gathering stays on track. If you want to try a new dish this year, consult with a specialty product store for helpful hints for the perfect execution.

Cater In Outsourcing the food menu and bartending services may be a better option if you’d prefer to simply mingle with your guests rather than fuss over the menu in the kitchen. Party platters of appetizers and sweet treats can be arranged in advance, or contact a local party planner for a full-course dinner with corkage service.

Drive Safe Keep yourself and the community safe. Have on hand the phone number for taxi service for your own use after a gathering or for

your guests. Alternatively, if you are hosting holiday cheer, consider hiring private transportation to pick up and drop off your guests — giving everyone peace of mind.

Tidy Up The last thing you have time (or desire) for at this time of year is cleaning the house. Take a load off by hiring professionals to take care of the dirty work. Freshen up the guest room for out of town travellers, and get the formal dining room in tip top shape. The time you save can be spent elsewhere!

Keep the Kids Entertained While the grownups are catching up, have activities on hand to keep the little ones entertained as well, whether it’s a stash of board games, craft supplies or some video games. If you want to try something different, consider hiring a children’s entertainer to put on a show.

Order Holiday Arrangements in Advance The Christmas and New Year period is generally a busy time for florists. Make a list of the arrangements you will need for the home and office and place your order early. Ask the florist for proper care instructions to ensure the arrangements last throughout the season.

Remember to Enjoy Yourself Don’t let the hectic holiday season overwhelm you. Make “me time” a priority to ensure you don’t burn out before you have a chance to enjoy the festivities — sit and put your feet up, schedule a manicure, treat yourself to a massage or hit the gym to make up for your deserved indulgences.

HOUSE & HOME

BEHIND THE WALLS… AND CEILINGS TOO! By Scott McGillivray

30

FineLifestyles

HOUSE & HOME

W

hen homeowners are renovating, a lot of focus goes into the elements they see everyday: floors, paint colours and kitchen counters, for example. And rightfully so. The design features of your home should reflect your personal style and you want to be comfortable with the look and feel of your home. But all those design bells and whistles in front of the walls are completely pointless without all the right elements behind them.

Insulation Insulation is one of the most important players behind the scenes in your house, directly affecting its warmth, energy efficiency and safety. If you’re opening up your walls, upgrading your insulation is a no-brainer. I’ve been using stone wool insulation (such as Roxul’s ComfortBatt) for years now because it’s fire resistant; water repellent; resistant to mould, mildew, rot and bacterial growth; and is made from natural stone and recycled material. The bonus? Stone wool insulation is DIY-friendly. Any homeowner can take on this project with a utility knife and a little sweat equity.

Waterproofing We all know one of the biggest threats to your home is water. The amount of damage that can be caused by water is astronomical and can cost tons of money, not to mention the time and stress of repair. The room in your home that is

the main culprit of water damage has historically been the bathroom. The good news? If you’re renovating, you have the chance to fix the problem, or better yet, prevent it before it’s a problem. Many homeowners don’t realize there are now entire waterproofing systems— like those provided by Schluter — that are a onestop shop for keeping your bathroom high and dry. I love using Schluter’s Kerdi product behind shower and tub surrounds because it’s fast and easy to install — like drywall, but waterproof. It’s light and easy enough to work with that you can score it with a utility knife, and it even comes printed with a grid pattern for foolproof cutting.

Soundproofing On Income Property, I’ve done more than 100 basement renovations for homeowners adding an income suite to their homes. When I talk to these homeowners about their concerns and “must-have” items, soundproofing between the two units is pretty much at the top of the list. If you’re renovating your basement, chances are you’re taking down the ceiling for one reason or another, such as accessing ductwork, electrical or plumbing. And much like with putting extra insulation on your walls, popping in some Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound mineral wool insulation is an easy, DIY project that ups the safety and sound absorption in your home by a huge amount. The ultimate sound dampener, Safe ‘n’ Sound

provides an acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound instead of leaving it to bounce around between walls. It also provides higher sound absorption against low frequency ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block, so say goodbye to the thumping bass of your kids’ music and video games bleeding up from the basement. Just make sure to insulate around ductwork wherever possible, since sound travels through them. And if you have pot lights, make sure you use certified insulating boxes around them to maximize the amount of insulation you can use. M

any people don’t realize that selling a home is a complicated, timeconsuming process. With numerous factors to consider such as open houses, advertising, pricing, negotiating and handling the numerous kinds of inquiries, it can be very exhausting, and, even worse, unfruitful. Many homeowners report the familiar grief after an open house: “I got lots of people, but most were just looking,” or, “They wanted it for a song.” You may be thinking, “Why would I need a real estate professional to sell my

Without working day in and day out in the real estate market it is quite unlikely that a For Sale By Owner home seller will have complete understanding about pricing. Often a seller is forced to reduce the price and may have to accept less money for the home than the seller would have received had he/she started at the right price. When RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty works with you they ensure you will receive the most current market stats along with a thorough market analysis report to guarantee your home is in a solid market position. Often investors and bargain hunters prey on For Sale by Owner sellers. Hoping to take advantage of the seller’s inexperience, they often will try to purchase your home for considerably less and are often less than honourable in their attempts to make this happen. A property depreciates the longer it is on the market. Many owners fail to take advantage of this excitement by limiting the market to their immediate contacts and advertising. RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty ensures your home is advertised 24 hours a day until it is sold. We ensure that only prospects who can qualify are introduced to your home. This eliminates

HOUSE & HOME

the hassle of “lookers” and non-serious buyers. These people will often approach For Sale by Owner Sellers because they have had previous financial difficulties and want the owner to finance them. While for the right person, this could be a profitable investment, most sellers need to pull as much equity out of the property as possible to be able to move on with their next home. Did you realize that any time a private seller is away from home, the home is off the market? We guarantee that someone will always be available to handle and follow up with inquiries during both peak and off-peak hours. We also have some of the best mortgage brokers in the industry working with us who can pull the necessary strings to help finance a purchase. A seller selling privately can expect to put a minimum of 80 hours work into the project and face many out of pocket expenses, without a guaranteed result. If you have considered selling your home by owner, we would love to sit down with you and discuss your decision. Let RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty show you how you can save time and money! Selling a home can be extremely stressful! Let us take care of the details, from the first step of marketing to the final sale, so you can continue on with your life.

YOUR HOME: DÉCOR FOR WINTER MONTHS

W

By Erin Legg

inter begs for cosy retreats. During the long winter months we spend extended periods of time indoors, sheltering from the winter chill. Lounging by the fireplace, pulling your woolies snug on your feet, and indulging in a mug of hot cocoa will keep you cosy. But how about adding warmth and welcome to your space by updating the décor? Colour is perhaps the most dramatic way to invite mood into any room. Shades of red, orange and yellow — think “fire” inspired — add brightness and warmth to any space, even in the long days of winter. Transform your room with a new wall colour, or liven it up with new cushions or accents, such as an eye-catching vase in fiery shades. Another colour to counteract the winter chill is green. Green hints at lush nature during the sultry summer months, providing you with a cosy retreat until the snow melts. For smaller, unassuming spaces consider applying a bold patterned wallpaper to a feature wall. Feeling more dramatic than that? Wallpapered ceilings give any space a boost and helps smaller rooms appear larger. Experiment with décor accents in warm metallics, such as bronze or copper, to accent the place during the winter months. The shimmery metallic appeal mimics ice and snow but without the frosty feel. Touch is an element that helps define warmth within a room. Armchairs and sofas with plush throws and pillows create a soft, relaxing environment. Conversely, streamlined wooden furniture with a natural appearance also adds to the atmosphere:

HOUSE & HOME

reminiscent of a rustic, cosy cabin in the woods. Don’t be afraid to consider a new layout for your furniture this winter season. Sometimes simply creating a new intimate seating arrangement or focal point can have the biggest impact. An easy and quick way to warm up a room is to replace your summer-y area rug with a plush wool rug or even sheepskin. This can have a big impact on any room. When the winds are howling and the snow blowing, what better feeling than burying your toes into a soft, thick rug? Just as we update our wardrobes with the changing season, updating our décor accents helps transition our home from one season to the next. Decorative pillows and blankets go a long way, not only in the living room but the bedroom as well. As we tend to dress in layers during the cool months, this concept can also be applied to the bedroom for a comfortable and warm evening retreat. A thick comforter paired with a texturized coverlet and accent pillows invites comfortable, restful sleep. Natural lighting and plants or flowers create a lively, inviting atmosphere. Pine cones, dried branches or pebbles arranged artistically can increase the charisma of your room. And don’t underestimate the power candles can have! The charming glow offered by flickering candlelight creates a cosy, warm environment. Maximize the shortened hours of daylight by ensuring windows are not obstructed with furniture and the natural light can filter in. To accommodate for chilly winter evenings, consider switching your drapery for thick insulated styles to help keep in the heat.

Hyundai’s Car Raffles Mean New Home for Family in Need By Melanie Furlong

F

our years ago, Yorkton Hyundai owner Ron Kaban decided he wanted to do something to help needy families in his community. When he found out about Habitat for Humanity’s new builds, the charity seemed like a good fit. “I wanted to do something for Yorkton that my employees and I could all be involved in,” says Kaban. Over the years, he and his staff have gone to the building sites and pitched in by painting and helping out in other ways.

But they’ve really made a big difference by raffling off a new Hyundai vehicle to raise money for the organization four years in a row. To date, Habitat for Humanity Yorkton has raised more than $80,000 through their Hyundai car raffles. This year, the funds are being used to build a duplex on Myrtle Street. According to Tom Seeley, a long-time volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Yorkton, they are going to house two families with one build. “One half is the Hyundai build and

the other is a faith build, supported by various denominations of churches that came together to raise funds. It’s a great community collaboration,” says Seeley. The two single-parent families that will be moving into the duplex have been working hard to put in their 500 hours of sweat equity. Habitat for Humanity will hold the affordable, interest-free mortgages, which allow the owners to put 100 per cent toward the principal. Like any growing community, the cost of housing in Yorkton has increased dramatically. Although many are unaware of it, the need for affordable housing is real. “We are so grateful. We’ve had tremendous support from Yorkton and Ron Kaban is at the forefront of the donations,” says Seeley. Kimberly Hamilton, general sales manager at Yorkton Hyundai, says Habitat for Humanity is the company’s main charity and one that Kaban is very passionate about. “He’s very humble,” says Hamilton, “and he wants to help people in need. Having a new home of their own is something so huge for people who need it. It’s become a real mission for him.” Kaban says Yorkton Hyundai has had a great experience working with Habitat for Humanity Yorkton for the last four years. “Seeing the looks on the faces of the families who couldn’t afford a house on their own and seeing their excitement when it’s ready to move into—there’s no better feeling than that,” says Kaban. “To raise enough money to build a house for a family in need, it’s been fun and so fulfilling.” This year, Yorkton Hyundai is donating a brand new Accent GL to Habitat for Humanity. The winning ticket for the car will be drawn Dec. 31 and tickets are on sale now at ReStore and through various local businesses.

GAIL VAZ-OXLADE on Living, Learning and Managing Your Money By Tonya Lambert

P

eople think it is all about the money with me,” says Gail VazOxlade, host of Til Debt Do Us Part and Princess. “But it isn’t. I have a regular house with melamine countertops and a regular fridge. I drive a Dodge Caravan and have a dog. My hobby is painting and, in the summer, I like gardening. Debt, however, is anathema to me. People need to know the details of money so it doesn’t become a problem.”

She continues, “Many people have this thing about measuring themselves by their stuff, but I measure myself on my ability to be kind when I don’t want to be. It’s good for my soul. Life should be about the content of our character and not the content of our cupboards.” According to Vaz-Oxlade, the No. 1 reason people get into debt is they don’t pay attention; they have no idea what they’re spending. This is easier to do now than in the past because people rarely deal with physical money. Vaz-Oxlade introduced the money jars system on Til Debt Do Us Part so people would realize money is a finite resource. “You only

have so much money,” she explains. “And people need to understand that once it’s been spent, it’s gone.” The money jar system is beneficial to anyone who needs help staying on budget. It is a great way to teach children about money management, dividing their allowance into different jars/ categories. Darlene and Rick have been using the money jar system to prepare for retirement. “Even though we are two years away from retirement, we use the money jars to live on what our retirement budget will be in order to be prepared when the time comes,” says Darlene. “Money isn’t rocket science; it’s discipline,” says Vaz-Oxlade, a mother of two. “It’s our job as parents to teach our children impulse control.” Unfortunately, many parents fail to talk about money matters with their children, so when these children become adults they don’t know how to manage their cash flow. In short, they are financially illiterate. Her vast reserve of financial knowledge, combined with an ability to explain seemingly complex matters in a very

BUSINESS

simple-to-understand way, made VazOxlade the perfect host for a program that taught couples how to manage their money so they could rid themselves of debt, restore their relationship and save for the future. Til Debt Do Us Part was a huge success, lasting nine seasons, and was followed by Princess and Money Moron. After receiving numerous emails from people asking her to make a budget for them, Vaz-Oxlade developed an interactive budget (which actually pours your money into virtual jars!) and put it on her website. Today, Vaz-Oxlade no longer hosts television shows. Instead, this forwardlooking woman has turned her love of learning to new pleasures and challenges. She blogs and has a radio program, The Late Shift. She also works with The Common Sense Divorce team to bring the same good sense to divorce that she did to money. “I enjoy trying new foods and travelling to new places,” says the Jamaican-born Vaz-Oxlade. “There is always something different to see. I am a firm believer that you should always keep learning new things.”

THE HOME OFFICE

ith most jobs needing only a computer, phone and Internet connection, more people are working from home than ever before. Work/life balance is a hot topic when it comes to business trends, with millennials and Gen-Y workers stating it’s one of their main priorities when choosing a job.

work out of office, the report states, would have a bottom-line economic benefit of $53 billion across the country, as well as community perks such as reduced traffic and the resulting lower carbon-emissions. As an example of the savings for individual businesses, the report estimates a company that has 250 telecommuting employees would save $3 million a year. Telecommuting saves employers more than just overhead and rent money; employees who work from home are happier, and thus more productive. According to Globalworkplaceanalytics. com, 36 per cent of workers would prefer working from home to a pay raise, and 80 per cent of employees consider working from home a job perk. According to Smallbiztrends.com, 69 per cent of U.S. entrepreneurs start their businesses from home, and many have employees who work from their own homes as well. For entrepreneurs, starting a business costs an average of $15,000, and cutting the overhead by working from home allows more freedom for the business owner in those important first few years.

According to the WorkShift initiative, led by Calgary Economic Development, there are about 4.3 million Canadians with jobs that are compatible with working from home. Allowing these people to

And for people just starting up, Medeiros recommends getting your own domain name to give a professional first impression via email. Shop Local This Season

T

here are many good reasons to shop at local markets, independent retailers and home-based businesses in the Parkland area this season. The most important is that dollars spent close to home stay close to home. Spending money locally benefits both you and your community in various ways. For one, local businesses are owned by people who live in your community. If their businesses are successful, they’re less likely to leave and are more invested in the community’s future. Independent shops often stock items that are made locally and aren’t available elsewhere. When it comes to gifts, original items are a major plus of independent shops. There’s also the hyper-local gift choice. For example, independent bookshops often stock titles by local authors that aren’t yet on the shelves of the major chains. Local shops also support local artists and designers, food producers and growers, so you’re buying products absolutely unique to your area!

Yorkton Co-op Celebrates 75 years

Yorkton Co-op Meets the Needs of CoMMuNities By Susan Gellert Photos Courtesy of Yorkton Co-op

O

ver the past few issues we have watched the evolution of the Yorkton Co-op. From one-room offices to oldstyle stores, the Co-op has evolved into a multi-faceted, community-minded group of businesses spread throughout the Parkland area. With a dynamic group of community leaders at its helm, the Coop has grown and developed to meet the needs of various communities. We will focus this installment of the history on the Yorkton Food Centre, Kamsack Food Centre, the Ebenezer Agro Centre and The Theodore Service Centre.

The Yorkton Food Centre, opened in 1989, is a traditional grocery store with groceries, meat, produce, bakery and deli. Its vast selection, well organized layout, high quality products and friendly, helpful staff keep people loyal to co-op shopping. As a service to the community, they offer personal shopping and delivery service. In a geographic location with many elderly people, this is a true demonstration of the community service offered by the Yorkton Co-op. Shoppers will also find a lottery kiosk, RO Water machine and selfcheckouts alongside the options of meat, vegetable and fruit trays and gift baskets for special occasions.

BUSINESS

Kamsack’s Co-op Food Store received a complete facelift with a brand new store in 2013. Located on the main highway with ample parking and great options, this has quickly become a staple of the Kamsack community. They offer groceries, meat, produce, bakery and deli, as well as in-store cut meat and a RO Water Machine. If you have a celebration in your future, call to book your meat, vegetable and fruit trays and save some time to enjoy your festivities. The Ebenezer Agro Centre is a busy place situated in the heartland of agriculture. It opened in 2003 and offers dry fertilizer

blended to customer specifications, as well as a high through-put volumetric blending system. The Ebenezer Agro Centre carries a full line of crop protection products and large inventory as they understand that products have to be readily available. Canola and forage seed are available on site, and farmers have access to agronomic services including fertility analysis and field scouting. Westeel and Meridian corrugated and straight wall bins are available and make an impressive view from the air. The Agro Centre also carries a large inventory of grain bin parts and accessories. Clients have access to FCC Farm Credit and Agri Card financing, as well as Co-op Ag services. The Ebenezer Co-op Agro Centre takes care of the details and offers single stop services so farmers can maximize their time and profitability. Situated along Highway 16 on the edge of the village of Theodore is the Theodore Co-op Service Centre. They have pump gas, diesel and propane, as well as the flexibility and convenience of a card lock fuel system. The convenience store carries a full line of oil products and hardware alongside convenience snack items, coffee and cold drinks. Over time, the Yorkton Co-op has grown and evolved to meet the needs of its members in all the communities it serves. The Co-op model of being member-owned means any profits are returned to the members and stay in the local economy. “We live where you live, work where you work and help grow the economy right here. We are your neighbours and we make sustainable investments in the communities we share,” explains Bruce Thurston. No matter which Co-op location you visit, their top notch service encourages you to realize, “You’re at home here.”

hroughout its 75 years, Yorkton Co-op has stayed true to its roots and its original goal of serving Co-op members with products and services that help build, feed and fuel individuals and communities. They have stayed true to the cooperative model and take pride in being member-owned, which means any profits are returned to their members and stay in the local economy. This past year in Fine Lifestyles we have watched and followed the story of the Yorkton Co-op from humble beginnings to the community pillars they are today. Our last installment will focus on the

fuel needs. No matter what your fueling preference, they have you covered. All Gas Bars offer both full-serve and self-serve options at competitive pricing, as well as three grades of gasoline plus diesel at each fueling position. The convenience stores also provide a variety of motor oils and automotive sundry items to assist you with maintaining your vehicle. Coming through after hours? No problem as the cardlock fuel locations are self-serve, and are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Yorkton Cardlocks are located at 180 Hamilton Road serving Highways 9 and 10, and on York Road West serving the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16).

The benefits of filling up at a Co-op gas bar or card lock in the area continue to stack up with Co-op members receiving equity back at year end for all pump fuel. Both the Palliser Way and West Broadway locations in Yorkton also offer car wash services to keep your vehicle looking new. With one touchless bay at West Broadway and two touchless bays and four wand wash bays at Palliser Way, you’re sure to keep your vehicle clean all year round. The Yorkton Agro Centre is located at 180 Hamilton Road, just off Highway 9/16 in the east side of the city and is

open Monday through Saturday. With its large storage location and easy access it provides farmers, ranchers, truckers and other consumers with Bulk petroleum and lubricants as well as farm hardware, fencing supplies and post pounder rental. They also carry a large supply of livestock feed and equipment in addition to animal health products. The agro centre is not just for farm families as it also provides hardware, including lawn mowers and snow blowers, gardening supplies, hoses and handheld sprayers for all your yard and garden needs. The Co-op Agro Yorkton location also provides propane filling and propane bulk deliveries.

Strategies for Personal Success

H

ave you ever noticed the pressure that builds up during the holiday season while everyone rushes around buying too much stuff for the big day? Then our bubble bursts just after New Years when we see how much new debt we have incurred, and all of a sudden

the talk turns to RRSP’s and taxes. The collective anxiety is enough to cause a massive ulcer. Ok, you can exhale now, all of this can be avoided. I suggest taking time to realign your financial situation through the Discovery Life Process, which looks at all areas of your life and offers advice, support and encouragement with clear simple solutions. The Discovery Life Process is a personal roadmap of clarity and understanding in order to have a healthy relationship with money, and what better time to consider this than during the holiday season. Take Stock It seems that when December comes, we all turn into absent minded spending zombies and then we spend the rest of the year trying to pay off the expenses before the cycle begins again. Adopting the phrase: “Do I need it or do I want it?” and being aware of your spending, will help you eliminate your post-holiday anxiety. To start, take stock of your financial situation right now and then create a cash flow plan. The urge to splurge and spend may nag at you, but it’s time to take off the blinders as unconscious spending rarely leads you to your desired result. “Beware of small expenses; a small leak can sink a great ship.” – Benjamin Franklin Create a Discovery Life Plan Financial stability is not a destination; it’s an active state of being. Imagine a plan that’s built specifically for you and not a generic plan supposed to fit many. In order to identify what you really have control over, most people need some

guidelines to work with. With the cocreation of a discovery plan suited just for you, whether single, couple or family; you can live your dreams at any life phase with what matters most to you! Focus on the Whole You Similar to a fitness plan that focuses on your physical health, the Discovery Life Plan strengthens your mind. The object is to cultivate your personal interests, hobbies and other good deeds that get you out in your community. Maybe you love kids and want to mentor or coach a sports team, tutor students or hold babies in the hospital, these kinds of activities keep your mind sharp and give you purpose. When you feel purposeful, you won’t need to fill in the gap with a fancy new toy or other material items that cost money. “Wealth is not a matter of intelligence, it’s a matter of Inspiration” – Jim Rohn Change will happen if you choose not to act, but it may not happen in the direction you want or that you even anticipated. If you want more from the money you earn, and the work you put into this world, then you need to act, not wish for change to happen. My favourite quote is: “Be the change you wish to see in the world” by Mahatma Ghandi. I am saying to you “Be the Change you wish to see in your world.” Give a gift to yourself and your family this year — call LR Future Insurance and Investments to talk about creating your Discovery Life Plan today. Cost When purchasing insurance online, one does not know if the premium is going to be correct as there are certain surcharges and discounts that apply to policies. If you don’t know about these charges, the premium could be higher or lower. At LR Future, our brokers are professionally trained to choose the right policy for our clients, and not to under insure, therefore avoiding unnecessary claims while maintaining the correct premium income. EasE Buying insurance online is more complicated than it seems. Most people don’t know what their options are when buying insurance. Most direct services completely fall through the cracks when queries and changes are required, particularly later on in the policy life cycle. Team Kare offers advice face-to-face, answers any questions or concerns the client may have and makes changes as soon as possible. spEEd While online insurance quotes are done very quickly, the difference with Team Kare is that midterm changes and documentation requests are also dealt with quickly. When these things are requested from online services, they rely on call centres whose staff have no experience or real insurance knowledge. Team Kare is more efficient and more knowledgeable in making suggestions, saving clients a lot of time in the end. Compare the two for speed and efficiency and credit and satisfaction will go to Team Kare, who can manage your policies’ life cycles.

pEaCE of Mind Team Kare is far more efficient at cross-checking policies than clients and are also very good at educating and explaining what type of coverage is available. Team Kare can ask clients the appropriate questions on what additional coverages are needed as far as their lifestyle and they are excellent at answering any client questions.

days, doing anything online is risky. With crimes such as identity theft, credit card theft, fraud etc., you are taking the chance of your personal data being exploited, lost or stolen. The Privacy Act is something Team Kare is sworn to, keeping your personal information confidential. Discussions with Team Kare, rather than someone online, give clients more protection from fraud. In conclusion, Team Kare does not work for an insurance company, they work for you. That’s the key difference that separates them from all other options. It means you have more advice, more choice, better pricing and a representative that’s on your side in the event of a claim.
