askatoon’s favourite award-winning business owner, stylist, stage artist, mentor, mom and wife plays the beauty speed round: Favourite feature? A gorgeous smile! It takes less muscles to smile than frown. This means less wrinkles as well. Life is too short to be grumpy or negative. And teeth: they don’t have to be perfect but they do have to be white!

Top beauty look on a woman? Beautiful skin! Skin is the largest human organ and it plays a vital role as your body’s first line of defense against infection and other harsh elements. If you suffer from certain medical conditions or work in dirty, extremely dry or wet environments, you are probably familiar with the problem of extremely dry skin. To restore your skin to good health, you must actively replenish the moisture down to the deeper layers. You need a professional to identify your type of skin and choose the right type of products to use. I recommend treating yourself to a facial four times a year as proper maintenance. Favourite spa service? Massage! Whether it is relaxation or therapeutic, massage is just what the doctor ordered. Massage therapy benefits people of all ages. While it helps the injured, the ill and the stressed, it can also prevent certain illness and conditions before they develop. Go alone or side-by-side with a friend or loved one. Nothing beats the power of human touch. Signature beauty look? Switch from brown liner during the day to black liner at night, then add a bit of brow shadow to further intensify the eyes. Sprinkle some volume powder at your hair roots. With a bit of backcombing, a little touchable hairspray and a bright lip gloss, you’re good to go in 10 minutes.

Cringe-worthy beauty moments? First, the number of women who come into a salon right after having a baby and ask to have their hair cut off! I know that nine times out of 10 there will be regret, so I always tell them to wait until the next appointment and if they still want it cut off, they’re ready. Second, drug store hair colours gone wrong. Leave it to the experts. Your hair is the ultimate fashion accessory — don’t mess with it! Favourite place to travel? Working in the beauty industry and owning my own business has allowed me to make connections and networks all over the world. My favourite place to go every year is Europe, just simply to be inspired. They really have it right there, finding a balance of working hard and relaxing with friends and family. Hardest lesson to learn? Only Wonder Woman can do it all and all at once. And she isn’t even real! Advice for your younger self? Don’t be so serious! I wish I learned to laugh at myself a lot earlier Business advice for budding entrepreneurs? You should always treat any place of business like your own. And when the time is right, get a mentor. Someone you trust and who will be open and honest about the pros and cons of owning your own business. FLS
