ine Lifestyles Regina has made its fall appearance! Like the beautiful season we have just entered, this issue exudes a special elegance.

First and foremost, the Women of Achievement feature is a standout. Three impressive women — Danielle Rubin of Renew Disaster Clean Up & Restoration, Leanne Fisher of Budget Blinds and Sharla Shaw of the Tidy Time Saver — serve as fine examples of the many successful women in and around the Regina area, including the Ladies of Lumsden. We salute each and every one of you! Not to be outdone is our annual wedding feature, with many businesses profiling their products and services to enhance that special day. We hope you enjoy our lead story featuring Randy Fenoli of Say Yes to the Dress fame. Once again, we present Explore More — a feature to encourage you to explore more of what this region has to offer. Somehow I am reminded of how fortunate we are to live here when these pages make their appearance. Fine Lifestyles is pleased to be a media sponsor of the Regina Symphony Orchestra for their 2015-16 season. Be sure to take in the 2015 RSO Piano Festival from November 12 to 28 to soothe your mind, body and soul. Beyond that, plan to take in the many symphony performances during 2015-16. The opening performance of the season — Simon plays Mozart — was exceptional!

CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN Engaging All The Senses

WITH STYLE By Trina Annand

C

hristian Louboutin has garnered the distinction of being a fashion icon after a mere two decades as an industry brand. Known the world over for their trademarked red sole, his footwear has become synonymous with style and sex appeal, introducing a splash of sensual colour to even the most modest looking heel. As a boy growing up in Paris, Louboutin discovered a love of heels quite by accident while visiting the Museum of African Art. A 1950’s sign that banned sharp-heeled shoes from the space immediately struck the inquisitive child. Louboutin was enchanted by the shoe style, a strict contrast to the 1970s trend for chunky heels or flats and began drawing his own designs in that style. The designer started his career working with performers and dancers, and then moved into shoe design. It wasn’t until 1992 that Louboutin had a dedicated shop for his footwear. Now Christian Louboutin stores dot the globe, bringing the theatricality of the designer’s shoes to women and men around the world. Designed in Paris, made by hand in Italy and inspired by the world, Louboutin’s women’s shoes are not made for comfort — they are made for beauty. In an interview with Charlie Rose, the designer said, “My shoes change a woman’s body language, they are transformational, they slow you down. They are not for running, if you run through life you’ll end up seeing nothing.” Best known for his signature stilettos the artisan has branched into men’s shoes as well. Laboutin’s signature red sole shoe came to him in the embodiment of a red nail polish, an added flourish created on a prototype by the designer. Louboutin has extended his signature style to accessories, including a selection of nail lacquers, which of course are available in a signature moody colour palette called Louboutin Rouge.

Enjoying the Wedding Planning Experience

M

any women dream about their wedding from a young age, envisioning the perfect day with the perfect person — not a stress-filled experience. Yet, for so many, planning this important day ends up becoming just that. It’s something wedding guru Randy Fenoli has seen time and time again. “Brides come in all the time saying ‘I am so stressed out!’ ” says Fenoli, beloved personality on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress. “To me, that’s silly. It’s a celebration! It can be intimate, it can be over the top, it can be whatever, but it shouldn’t be stressful.”

to the

STRESS: By Tori Stafford

With his outstanding ability to find the dress for brides who enter Kleinfeld Bridal in New York City, Fenoli is not only the bridal stylist at Kleinfeld Bridal, the salon where Say Yes to the Dress takes place, but also the star of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Randy Knows Best, and Randy to the Rescue. Channelling his years of wedding and bridal experience, Fenoli says the entire planning and wedding experience should be enjoyable. “If it’s stressful, I say go to City Hall and get it done. I tell brides that all the time. [Planning] is supposed to be the fun part, so if you’re not having fun, then just go to Vegas… they have a drive-thru chapel. Honey, you don’t even have to get out of your car,” he says with a laugh. To keep things in perspective, Fenoli recommends taking each task one at a time, so you can truly enjoy making the

decisions about what goes into your special day. “I always tell brides to smell the flowers, taste the cake, feel the paper for the invitations, look at the dresses, try them on, and have fun at every step of the way,” he says, noting a couple should set their budget before anything else to avoid unnecessary stress. Most importantly, always keep in mind why you are doing what you’re doing, and Fenoli expresses: “Again, it’s all about perspective. You can’t change the things that are in front of you… and all of those things that you need to do,” he says. “What you can change is how you think about them. Just enjoy it and remember what you’re doing: You’re marrying the guy of your dreams. It’s really about love, that’s what it’s all about.”

Five Things

You Don’t Want to Overlook when Planning Your Wedding 1. The Marriage License. This is the only thing you really can’t get married without. Get your license as early as possible and assign someone in the wedding party to ensure it’s there on the big day. 2. Break in Your Shoes. Wear in your footwear well before the big day to keep blisters at bay, and remind your party to do the same. 3. Phone Chargers. Chances are you’ll need your phone at some point, and a dead battery is an easily avoided stress if someone is assigned to bring chargers. 4. Eat. It’s easy to forget to eat throughout the day, and you need all the energy you can get. 5. Cash Tips on Hand. For the many people who help make your wedding happen, you’ll want to tip. This is something the groom or someone in the wedding party can easily take on to ensure it’s not missed.

aking a drive in a gorgeous limousine is a luxury that creates great impressions and lasting memories. A professional driver and beautiful vehicle add class and style to any function. Glenn Miller, owner of Classic Limousine Service, has a fleet of sedans, SUVs, Lincoln stretches and minibuses to suit a wide range of occasions. Do you need black car business service? Ask for one of their sedans or SUVs. Is a fantasy night on your calendar? Step out in their Ford Excursion stretch limo SUV featuring a large flat-screen television, two smaller televisions with DVD player, strobe lights, a fully licensed bar and a fireplace. Whatever your need, Classic Limousine Service has the vehicle for your event. Classic Limousine has been in business for 21 years. “We invest a great deal to make sure our fleet is well maintained at all times,” says Miller. The vehicles are routinely inspected for damage, wear and cleanliness. “We believe a quality ride should also be a safe one and I have no anxiety about sending them out to anybody at any time.” During the course of Classic Limousine Service’s history, they’ve done thousands

of weddings. The company also works with an impressive list of repeat and referral clients ranging from well-known entertainers to business people to teenagers attending grad parties. “We have worked with some very interesting people, but we keep our client list strictly confidential,” says Miller. The company prides itself on impeccable presentation, scheduling, confirming addresses and follow-up. “Everything we do is by appointment. If you book us, we show up prepared because we always reconfirm the details of the addresses and beverage orders before we go out.” Classic Limousine doesn’t just write your arrangements in a notebook. They use limousine industry specific computer software that provides an audit trail for your event from the time of booking to finalization. You have a booking number that tracks everything from date, time and location to deposits, payments and beverage orders. Classic Limousine Service also tries to match the best driver to suit the group they’re serving. The majority of drivers on staff are former professionals themselves. These have included a retired MP, lawyer,

teachers, brokers and business owners. “They are very professional and know how to give the VIP treatment to all of our clients,” adds Miller. Booking a limousine for your special event should be done as soon as you are firm on the date. Classic Limousine Service is particularly busy with weddings year round. They get busier every fall as corporate travel and shuttle service for conventions and private events start in September and corporate Christmas parties begin in late October. “When it comes to weddings, I would recommend booking as soon as you’re sure of the date and the type of vehicle you want to have,” says Miller. “Get it as quickly as possible because as you get closer to the date, the choice of limousines gets slimmer.” Whether you require business, personal, hourly or daily service, Classic Limousine Service will tailor a package for you. Prestige One did the catering for the 300 guests on both days. We found Heather, Elaine and Barry to be very easy to work with. which postures are practised and what order they are practised in, an Ashtanga session consists of the same set of opening, backbending and finishing sequences each time, along with one of six series that range in difficulty from beginner to advanced.

Developed by Indian yoga teacher K. Pattabhi Jois, who opened the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India in 1948, Ashtanga emphasizes synchronizing each asana (physical posture) with the breath, creating an internal heat that is believed to purify the body.

While teachers typically guide the class, students are encouraged to learn and remember the postures and the sequence in which to do them, making Ashtanga more disciplined than some other forms of yoga. For many students, repetition makes the practice easier to do on their own, as once you have learned the series and sequences, you simply step onto your mat and begin.

So what can you expect from an Ashtanga class? Continual movement and sweat, as well as deep, focused breathing — Ashtanga is a vigorous practice. But what sets it apart from other forms of yoga is the repetition. While most yoga styles feature variation in

her training with the National Laser Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona and a preceptorship with Dr. Will, Dr. Stewart now joins the Midwest team as the new medical director of the three locations. “One of the most enjoyable and important aspects of being a physician has been the ability to help people,” says Dr. Stewart. “When clients experience non-surgical

cosmetic procedures, it is humbling to be involved in their transformation and be able to watch their self-esteem grow.” Midwest’s goal is to provide their customers with a refreshed, natural look. The Midwest Laser Centre specializes in non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as Thermage CPT, Clear+Brilliant, Fraxel:Restore, Botox Cosmetic, Restylane, Juvederm and Teosyal. An additional benefit of non-surgical procedures is the minimal downtime. Most of the treatments offered by the centre can be done without taking any time off work. The experienced staff will guide you through the options and find a treatment plan to suit your needs and timelines.

Midwest Laser Centre is now offering IntimaLaseTM and IncontiLaseTM; this laser vaginal tightening treatment uses thermal heating to improve intimacy and decrease stress for urinary incontinence. The laser treatment, performed by Dr. Stewart, has a photo thermal heating effect on collagen in both the vaginal walls and the urethra, which causes restructuring and regrowth of the collagen. This results in thickening and tightening of the vaginal walls to improve atrophy and prevent urine loss. This simple, non-surgical, 15 minute, in-office procedure is highly effective, pain free and safe. “Midwest is a medical clinic. We strive to offer advanced treatments that are effective.

Having a surgical background has been indispensable in allowing me to achieve great results with injectable treatments. My medical training and understanding of the physics of lasers is critical for offering procedures to treat skin conditions, vascular lesions and rejuvenation treatments. It is exciting to be able to offer non-surgical gynecologic treatments.” For a free consultation and more information about these treatments, visit their website or call them today. In fact, in the early stages of this condition many patients exhibit clinical signs of blepharitis during the examination, but have no symptoms at all. Typical symptoms of blepharitis include gritty eyes, water eyes, burning sensation, foreign body sensation as if there is something in the eyes, blurry/filmy

28

Regina

The inflammation in blepharitis is caused by the narrowing of the opening of the oil glands in the eyelid (meibomian glands) causing a backup of the oils within the gland. These glands are located along the eyelid margin near the base of the eyelashes and are responsible for producing and excreting the oil layer of the tear film. This backing up of the oil creates inflammation, which can incite the normal bacterial flora on our eyelids to become excited and create a toxin; this further adds to the inflammation, resulting in a worsening of the blepharitis. Certain skin types (such as rosacea) tend to be more prone to developing blepharitis. Also, patients with diets higher in saturated and trans fats are more likely to have symptoms of blepharitis. Treatment of blepharitis can take many forms. Primary first line treatment for milder cases involves warm compresses on the eyelids twice daily to open the glands and improve the excretion of the oils. In addition, artificial teardrops are added to dilute the inflammatory mediators in the tear film and help alleviate the dry eye symptoms. More involved cases of blepharitis can be

managed with other therapies, including Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation, prescription eye drops to settle the inflammation on the eye, prescription anti-inflammatory ointments to settle the lid inflammation, lid hygiene products, gland expression treatment, a specific oral antibiotic that changes the lid environment and several other options. If you are suffering the symptoms of blepharitis, contact one of the optometrists at Advance Eye Care Center today to find out what treatment may be right for you. Book an appointment now. Care... GRATITUDE

As we approach our 17th year in business, we are grateful for the love and support from you — our community. A few years ago, we decided to designate September and October as GRATITUDE months at the spa. What age is best to start using anti-aging products? — Jenna M., Saskatoon

Beauty & Spa Q&A

T

his is the question I am most asked in regards to skin care. My answer is always the same: prevention is key! Skin that remains dehydrated for long periods of time will age faster, as will skin that has been exposed to sun and suffered environmental damage. Keeping the skin clean, hydrated and protected from the harsh elements really is the key to younger looking skin. Start taking care of your skin before age 21 or even in your teens if you can, create good skin care habits, stick to a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, get adequate sleep and avoid or protect your skin from the sun! ProductS to try: Anti-aging Vitamin A Pumpkin Cleanser and C Factor Cream which focuses on repairing free radical damage, hydration and anti-aging.

I’m 56 years old, and I’ve never used skin care. I regret to say that now I look much older than I am. Is it too late to help my skin? — Kathy K., Edmonton It is never too late to start caring for your skin. Begin with a gentle cleanser, exfoliate once or twice a week, and add a moisturizer that is suitable for your mature skin. If you have sun damage, we can begin with targeting those dark sun spots, and get you comfortable with using sunscreen to prevent any further damage. With care and commitment, you can surely help your skin regain its youthful appearance, and prevent your skin from aging faster than it needs to. ProductS to try: Lavender Cleansing Milk, a light cleanser for face and eye area; BHA – Enzyme Micro Polish, a weekly exfoliant to help brighten the skin while diminishing the appearance of dark spots; and Illuminating Apple Stem Cell Cream which focuses on mature skin, environmental damage and

pigmentation spots. My boyfriend struggles with oily skin. Do you offer any cleansing products for men? He washes his face with a bar of soap and doesn’t moisturize at all. — Michaela W., Regina This is a fairly common complaint for men. Bar soaps and harsh facial washes can strip skin of necessary moisture. Using a light cream cleanser can clean and condition the skin while maintaining that delicate moisture balance. It’s also important that he avoid cleansing with water that is too hot as this may irritate the skin causing it to over dry and possibly develop broken capillaries. Instead always use lukewarm water. Regular use of a good moisturizer prevents moisture loss and dehydration — which actually will make the skin produce more oil for protection. Lia Reese has several products that are great for targeting oil concerns but I would suggest trying our new men’s line of skin and shave products, designed to hydrate or combat oil, while leaving a matte finish on the skin. ASHER TY - for Men, hits shelves this September! Product to try: Lemon Grass Shave Cream to soften hair thus making shaving easier and leaves the skin soft with no irritation; Blue Lotus Cleanser, a gentle but effective deep cleanser for all skin types; and Cedarwood Natural Moisturizer which combats dryness and dehydration, leaving the skin silky smooth, moisturized and looking its very best. PERSONALIZED, EFFECTIVE THERAPY TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS

M

aureen Martens loves her work — so much so that she recently expanded her counselling services from Swift Current to include Regina and area.

“No matter how difficult the situation or personal issue, there is so much hope,” says Maureen. “I feel so privileged to be able to work with a client through their struggle and celebrate their victories. I love to watch them as they begin to live life more effectively and experience peace and success even in difficult situations.” Maureen feels confident about client outcomes. “I witness their transformations and regularly celebrate their victories. One reason I knew this was my calling (albeit later in life) was the hope and healing in my own life that is possible with a skilled therapist.” About education and training Maureen remarks, “I don’t believe that once therapists have their Master’s degree they should stop aggressively pursuing more education and training. Since finishing graduate studies, I have continued to travel extensively for training in several specialities and have gained a great mix of unique skills that provide the best therapeutic approaches and experiences clients deserve.” “People come from all walks of life with a variety of different issues,” says Maureen. “Whether it’s sex, alcohol or other addiction, trauma, anxiety, stress, relationship problems or other issues, clients want personalized and effective therapy tailored to their specific situation. Clients want the best and I strive to give my best. It’s a win-win combination.” Marking her third year of counselling in Regina with a move to her new location in the city, Maureen is now taking new clients. PIANO SOOTHES THE

Mind, Body & Soul

T

he connection between the mind, body and soul is evident. However, we often forget music comforts our lifestyle. The piano has been a long-recognized source of remedy for those seeking meditation and creative expression.

The piano is one of the most diverse musical instruments. It is part of all genres and styles of music including classical, jazz, popular, rock and roll, Broadway and religious. Unlike other woodwind or brass instruments, it can play both the melody and harmony. Many children start their musical training on the piano. It is an instrument that can be played on its own or in an ensemble. Its diversity and ability to cross genres and styles makes it one of the most popular instruments in our lives whether we travelling abroad or right here at home in southern Saskatchewan. One of the finest pianos here in Regina is the Fazioli concert grand piano in Darke Hall. The Fazioli piano

is widely regarded as one of the best pianos available and it takes about 3,000 hours to be made by hand in Italy. The Fazioli piano at Darke Hall was generously donated by Dr. Roberta McKay and Elmer Brenner as a generous contribution to The College Avenue Campus Renewal Project in 2014. The RSO Piano Festival will kick off with a performance on the Fazioli piano by jazz pianist David Braid, jazz cellist Matt Brubeck and the Regina Symphony Chamber Players. The RSO Piano Festival is an exciting collaboration of organizations that celebrates the beauty and power of one of the most famous music instruments. This 17day festival running from November 12 to 28, includes concerts, performances, workshops, masterclasses and other social events around this diverse instrument. From amateur to professional, young and old and everyone in between, you are invited to participate and enjoy the variety of activities around the City of Regina. UNIQUE BISTRO Taste You Never Forget By Tonya Lambert Photos Calvin Fehr

new addition to Regina’s culinary scene, Unique Bistro certainly lives up to its name. Its singular menu of international and cross-cultural cuisine contains so many thrillingly unexpected flavour combinations, it will keep you returning for more mouth-wateringly memorable meals. Growing up in northern India, executive chef Kamal Gensgat relished the region’s warm, fragrant food with its amazing blends of herbs and spices. Moving to Israel, he encountered a dizzying array of delicious, buttery dishes. Here, he studied to become a Red Seal Chef, specializing in Spanish and Thai cooking. While furthering his training in Paris, Gensgat became well-versed in the intricacies of refined French cuisine. Working as a chef in London, he became proficient in a potpourri of cultural cooking styles, from the attractive and appetizing plates of Japan to the rich, hearty meals of Italy. For the past seven years, Gensgat has lived and worked in Regina, exploring the special characteristics of Canadian cooking.

his Chai Crème Brûlée, a sweet FrancoIndian dessert. At Unique Bistro, you can travel the world without ever leaving Regina. Choose from such delectably different options as New Zealand Grilled Lamb Rack, Coconut Basil Supreme, Ricotta Gnocchi or Israeli falafel. Everything is made from scratch. Bread is baked fresh daily. The pasta is homemade. Gensgat and his sous chef, Lucky Singh, source many of their ingredients locally, including eggs, chicken, bison, pickerel, lentils, chickpeas and even quinoa, not to mention seasonal vegetables. Unique Bistro is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. (breakfast) until 10 p.m. Tired of always choosing from the same old lunch selections? Unique Bistro has an exceptionally large lunch menu, with everything from sandwiches and flatbreads to pasta and salads. Why not try the Cardamom Duck Confit or Duck Leg from Brome Lake or East Coast Mussels? Try their special main dish - Chef`s Special Fish in the Oven - the best salmon in town.

For vegetarians, there’s Lentil Cassoulet or Tandoori Vegetable Basil Pesto Flatbread. If you prefer something lighter, the Mediterranean Chicken Tabbouleh is a tasty option. The menu is replete with vegetarian and gluten-free dishes and the chefs are able to accommodate additional special dietary needs. Enjoy Chef Gensgat’s distinctly delicious food fusions from the comfort of your home (pick-up or delivery) or while relaxing in Unique Bistro’s spacious dining area with its large, central aquarium. Soon, you will also have the option of having Unique Bistro cater your wedding, Christmas party or corporate event. This summer, Gensgat joined forces with Harinderpal ‘Bubba’ Singh and Lakhwinder ‘Lucky’ Singh to open Unique Bistro. Having long dreamed of owning his own restaurant, Gensgat drew upon his global gastronomic experience to create a menu full of interesting and innovative dishes. “I like to play with recipes,” says Gensgat. “I use my experience cooking in many types of ethnic cuisines to create unique flavour combinations, bringing together the best of different worlds.” For example, Gensgat has combined two choice comfort foods to create Butter Chicken Poutine, a dish that can best be described as “pure pleasure.” Another favourite is Executive Chef Kamal Gensgat

When her husband, Alexander, got a job in Regina, they packed up their family and moved to Canada. Savoury and refreshing Ukrainian and Vegetable Borsch will delight your tastebuds. For variety, there is always a soup of the day. For main dishes, patrons enjoy authentic pork sausage (made in-house), meatballs and more. “Nothing is fried,” says Dasha. “We bake it all in the oven, which is healthier and more flavourful.” These dishes are served with a choice of mashed potato or buckwheat plus a side salad. Along with your meal, enjoy some refreshing Yzvar, a delightlful Ukrainian beverage. And remember to leave room for dessert; the array of lovely desserts will delight your sweet tooth. T

he floral and faunal inhabitants of Madagascar have long intrigued me and for little wonder. This precious piece of history boasts more than 12,000 plant species, of which 80 per cent are endemic or only found on this island, making it one of the most diverse floras on earth. Perhaps the most unusual and “must see” regions of Madagascar is the globally distinctive ecosystem, the “spiny forest.” One of the most bizarre collections of plants you may ever see, this refuge is a force to contend with. Prickly bits, scratchy twigs, some plants with leaves and others totally void and all arranged in what could well be a diorama produced by Fred Flintstone himself. Keeping in the “prehistoric” theme, the iconic Baobab trees are truly a sight to behold. One of the most amazing trees on earth, these bloated, bottle-like specimens are endemic to Madagascar. Adapted over time to endure dry conditions, their swollen trunks, massive root systems and ability to drop their leaves has allowed them to remain in situ for literally centuries. These trees are utilized by locals (present and ancient) for healing, as repositories for safe keeping, food caches and numerous other functions. The classic forest of Baobabs is often photographed but none do justice to the majesty of these trees. Curiosities abound in Madagascar, not the least of which are the amazing lemurs. Lemurs and their families can be seen in selected reserves and if you are fortunate enough to take an excursion from the ship,

SPORTS, RECreation & TRAVEL

you are pretty much guaranteed sightings. Giant tortoises can also be found on the islands just off the west coast of Madagascar. Booking a tour or excursion to see them is well worth it. Some of these specimens are a century old. Our mode of travel to Madagascar is aboard the MS Nautica, a sister ship to our beloved Nautica of the Oceania family. Nimble and swift, she is able to dock at some of the world’s smaller ports without the need of tenders. I personally enjoy a tender ride, but for some it may be more of a challenge. What I relish is that I can tramp through a steamy jungle, wade up to my calves in muddy water, endure sauna-like temperatures and return to the ship to relax in five star luxury with a shower and nestle into the comfort of the grand dining room, awaiting the reliably excellent service. Our itinerary took us from Dubai in the UAE south and east to several ports in India. These exotic ports offer a wealth of textures, tastes and sounds — a veritable buffet for all the senses. Sailing onwards, Nautica negotiated the Seychelles and magnificent Maldives, Zanzibar and Mombasa before arriving in Madagascar. In short, it was the voyage of a lifetime. In the event that Madagascar is not on your bucket list of places to visit, amend your list! You don’t want to miss magical, magnificent Madagascar. HOUSE & HOME

HOME SAFETY By Scott McGillivray

HOUSE & HOME

T

he safety of your home — and everyone who lives in it — should be a top concern for every homeowner. Luckily, making your home safe and secure has never been easier.

FIRE ALARMS You’d think installing fire alarms in a home had become a no-brainer — kind of like wearing a seatbelt — but you’d be amazed at how many homes I see that either don’t have any, don’t have enough or have ones

that don’t work. Having a fire alarm is pointless if the battery is dead or locating it so far from your bedroom that it won’t wake you up. And while there’s no excuse for letting your alarm’s battery go dead, there are new models, such as the “Worry Free” alarms from Kidde that last for 10 years without changing the battery — great no matter how forgetful you are! Place alarms outside all sleeping areas and on all levels of your home — especially in areas where fires are more likely to start, such as kitchens and utility rooms. Even better, interconnected alarms will alert you to problems in other areas of your home (and are generally required by code if you have an income suite). Installing interconnected alarms is not an easy DIY project, and if you don’t already have your walls and ceilings opened up for a renovation it can mean a lot of holes to patch in your drywall. The good news is several companies, such as Kidde, have created wireless interconnected alarm systems that work via your home’s Wi-Fi network, making installation a breeze. CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS Right up there with fire alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are a must-have item in your home if it contains at least one fuel-burning appliance (such as a gas water heater or gas furnace), fireplace or an attached garage. Often called “the silent killer” because it’s colourless and odourless, carbon monoxide causes flulike symptoms and can be fatal if you breathe enough of it. Combination fire and CO alarms are available in battery and wired versions

HOUSE & HOME

that help keep costs down and are big on convenience. Place them on all levels of your home and, again, near sleeping areas. DOOR HARDWARE Home safety actually starts outside your house with your front door. Having a high quality door lockset is key (no pun intended!) to ensuring your home’s security. Companies such as Taymor have some attractive options, making it easy to match hardware to the exterior of your home and add to your home’s curb appeal. Keyless entry systems controlled by code, Bluetooth or “virtual keys” are becoming popular and tend to go handin-hand with home monitoring systems. HOME MONITORING Thanks to advancements in technology, you can be dialled into your home 24/7. Forgot to turn your lights off? No problem: you can control them with your phone. Need to know if your kids came home after school? There’s an alert for that. Home monitoring is no longer just an alarm system, but rather a full-home solution. Advancements in video monitoring let you know your house is safe while you’re at work or on vacation. Features such as water leak sensors, thermostat control, as well as traditional fire and carbon monoxide monitoring, provide a whole home approach to safety and comfort. The bonus? You’ll even save some money on your home insurance. Check out Income Property on HGTV CANADA. /EverythingScottMcgillivray @smcgillivray @scottmcg @scott_mcgillivray www.scottmcgillivray.com

Retirement Planning: Have You Saved Enough?

he single hardest question I get is: “Have I saved enough?” The single easiest question: “How much should I save?”

programs to retire these days. I’m not sure I agree with this because it makes too many assumptions regarding a household’s spending patterns.

“How much should I save” is easy because it can be anchored to how much a household earns, which is a fixed number with no inflation or rate of return assumptions. I have something called “The 25% Rule” I often use when explaining this.

Whenever I do a retirement plan with someone, we end up at one of four options:

It is very simple. All household spending can be broken down into five categories: housing, transportation, miscellaneous, debt reduction and savings. The debt reduction portion should be 15% of your budget and the savings should be 10%. Instead of seeking more debt when debts are done, that portion of the budget should now go to savings. This means 25% of a household’s net income goes towards building net worth. There have been studies (my favourite was done by the author of The Millionaire Next Door and The Millionaire Mind, Thomas J. Stanley, and used in those books) which show how the 25% Rule is a reasonable amount to contribute to your household net worth. If you follow this rule from day one, you will always have financial security. “Have I Saved Enough” poses another problem, mainly because it doesn’t operate in a vacuum. Because of variables such as inflation and rate of return, many financial experts say you need at least a million dollars in addition to government

HOUSE & HOME

1. You’re okay. Within a margin of error and with reasonable projections, there will be enough money to take care of retirement. 2. Save more. Sometimes the retirement age isn’t an option; someone really wants to retire at age 60. Period! 3. Work longer. The goal is set, the amounts needed are set, but no more can be contributed, so some delay is required to attain it. 4. Want less. Interestingly, this one works before and after retirement. It can free up funds to invest and then create less drag on investments while drawing income in retirement. Interestingly, when a household has been using the 25% Rule, I find option No. 1 to most often be the case. It means throughout a person’s life, they have been making intelligent debt decisions and have been using their income to build their net worth — an excellent decision! Ultimately, a skilled financial planner can ask the right questions and help develop your financial plan. As I previously stated, this question isn’t asked in a vacuum, and professional help can shine a light on your path.

I

n keeping with the theme of Women of Achievement, I’d like to take some time to talk about the highly valued women who contribute so much to the real estate industry. The concept of women in real estate is certainly not a new one. According to the National Association of REALTORS®, women have been integral in the real estate business since its inception in 1794. By the 1880s, women were moving into roles as salespeople and brokers. As much as men might like to believe they are decision makers when it comes to buying a house, it’s often not the

case. I found this out when my family moved to Regina in 1987. After an exhaustive search, we had narrowed our choices to two houses: a lovely bungalow with double attached garage, finished basement located on a cul-desac in a great neighbourhood and a new construction two storey with double attached garage just a block or two away. I really wanted that bungalow. My wife, Lynne, really wanted the two storey. My agent at the time was wise enough to say nothing, but stood beside my wife and smiled. Yes, we bought the two storey. The point of this tale is that women, by and large, are the decision makers on

home purchases. It only makes sense that female agents might have an excellent opportunity to help other women with the buying process. Women in Regina real estate is a more recent phenomena. The “Grand Dame” of Regina real estate was a dynamic woman named Frances Olson. Frances began her real estate career in 1965. When no one would hire her as an agent, she opened Frances Olson Realty, the first all-female brokerage in Canada. Through the 60s and 70s, Frances and her team, “The Olson Girls,” were a force to be reckoned with. Her innovative marketing and high energy made an indelible mark in our

industry. A few years back, we at Royal LePage Regina Realty had the opportunity to have Frances address our sales team. It was truly inspirational to listen to this pioneer and innovator. I probably learned more about selling real estate in that hour than I had learned in all the years before. Thank you, Frances! We highly value the contributions our female agents provide. Real estate is a profession where women are treated as full equals. Nothing makes a man better at it than a woman; it is an equal opportunity career. What you get out of it is directly proportional to what you put in. The hours are long and the pay

uncertain and there are absolutely no guarantees of success. Yet every year, men and women are attracted to real estate as a career and they love it. One of the real perks of working in real estate is the ability to control your work hours. If you would like to attend a school function for your children, you are in charge of your schedule! One of your family is ill, and you’d like to stay home with them? Make it happen. Should you be considering real estate as a career, why not give us a call? We can fill you in on what is involved, and maybe just a bit of what it takes to be successful.

ntrepreneurship was once considered a man’s game, but more women are starting their own businesses and excelling in business than ever. According to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey there were 950,000 self-employed women in Canada in 2012, which accounts for 35.6 per cent of all self-employed persons (up only 4.4 per cent since 1990). Yet, the proportion of women-owned businesses that plan to expand is generally higher than men, and when a woman does

decide to open her own business she tends to stay in business longer, meaning her survival rates are higher.

to their advantage in the workplace, while others are fighting the idea that they need to “act like men” to succeed.

Women-owned startups often receive significantly less investor funding, and fear of failure is listed as one of the biggest concerns among women starting their own business. Women also have to deflect the perception of many employers that family responsibilities will interfere with their competence at work. Some are still learning to use what are perceived as feminine qualities (nurturing, relationship focused)

What does it take to get to the top? Some of the common traits of successful women are assertiveness, confidence, strategy, opportunity recognition and the ability to handle stress. While there’s no one recipe for success, Fine Lifestyles plans to ask women about their motivations, success habits and interests to see what helped them get to where they are.

Kelly Larwood Cultivating a Desire to Be Exceptional By Tobie Hainstock

elly Larwood is no stranger to hard work. At Suncoast Enclosures, she is always willing to go above and beyond what her customers expect. As a business person, Larwood sets a good example to others with her determination, hard work and organizational skills. To keep herself organized, Larwood finds it helpful to create a to-do list every night for the next day’s tasks. “I number the tasks to identify which ones are most important and then check them off as they are completed. This way, I don’t

forget anything on my list and get the highest priorities done first.” Larwood advises entrepreneurs to cultivate a desire to be exceptional. For her, this means doing what most people won’t and getting the job done even when you don’t feel like it. Sometimes, this requires making tough choices, and there are times when things don’t work out the way you would like or things get off track. When that happens, Larwood offers some wisdom: “Acknowledge the fact you have failed and do what it takes to deliver what you’ve committed to.”

Larwood shows strong leadership skills as she and her husband, Don, motivate their team to deliver top quality enclosures that will add style and value to clients’ homes. According to Larwood, this type of leadership requires two admirable qualities: honesty and integrity, both of which encourage a strong work ethic and pride. She applies these beliefs in what she does every day, and continues to succeed. This includes working with home stagers, REALTORS® and home builders to help them build and develop their businesses as well as her own. Being part of a creative industry such as home design and decor is rewarding for Fisher and she thrives when interacting with fellow professionals. As a successful business owner, Fisher offers women entrepreneurs the same

advice as she does men. In the business world, men and women need the same attributes to be successful. What’s her advice? “Surround yourself with the right people. Ask for advice, hire professionals and have someone you are accountable to. A good example of such a person is a business coach.” Fisher is the first to boast about the strong team surrounding her every day. “I have a team of 13 amazing people and I appreciate everything they do. I know that my success stems from their energy and expertise.”

Not only is Fisher a capable business person, she’s also very family oriented. As a single mom of three beautiful young ladies, she is ultra-conscious of the need to maintain a well-balanced lifestyle. “I can’t tell you how important being a positive role model is to me. Setting a good example for the three small women who live with me is what makes everything worth it,” she comments. In the end, for Fisher, it’s loving her work and keeping an important work/family balance that creates the quality of life she is grateful for.

Be strong and be motivated!” Rubin feels it’s important to know what your goal is and to work hard to achieve it. “Be prepared to fail,” she adds. “You are going to stumble, but remember to get back up, dust yourself off and move on. It’s important to push yourself to improve.” Renew Disaster Clean Up and Restoration has only been open a little more than a year, but Rubin admits it seems longer. ew people understand the effort it takes to start a business from the ground up like Sharla Shaw, owner of Tidy Time Saver. In 2000, Shaw pursued her dream of being a business owner by starting her highly successful residential cleaning business. Today, Tidy Time Saver offers residential house cleaning services to busy families in Regina and Saskatoon. “We provide cleaning services on weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and one-time bases. We also do renovation clean ups plus move-in and move-out cleaning,” she adds. Shaw truly values the relationships her staff has built with their clients. Their hard work and dedication to what they do is one of her primary motivations on a day-to-day basis. “I take a great deal of pride in knowing I’ve chosen the right

people. They all work very hard and I do everything I can so they can continue doing what they enjoy doing.”

she says. “Giving in will affect your confidence and the decisions you make day-to-day.”

Shaw is pleased to offer helpful hints and advice to promising entrepreneurs, firmly believing the key to a successful business is to be consistent in the way things are done. Once the right formula of expertise, friendliness and excellent customer service are in place, stick with it.

Shaw is very conscientious about separating her personal and professional lives. She is very earnest in her advice about how entrepreneurs can maintain a healthy balance of work and family life. She recommends business owners get a landline installed for their businesses and keep their work days defined from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This might be a difficult thing to do, but it’s very necessary to create the boundaries you need for a healthy family life and a successful business.

A good attitude about your business is also an excellent way to help keep your business successful. “Really, what we do at Tidy Time Saver is help people simplify their lives. By offering regular cleaning service, we give them more time to spend with family and friends and doing other things that they love to do,” remarks Shaw. She advises women entrepreneurs to be strong willed. “Have a backbone,”

or Andria Kainz, it was her love for interior decorating that led her to opening a successful window coverings business. For several years, Andria worked at helping people choose furnishings and accessories for their homes. “I found satisfaction in being able to help people in that way, figuring out what style and atmosphere they were trying to create and finding that perfect piece,” she recalls. Andria and her husband, Darren, had started a successful window and door installation business five years prior. When speaking with customers, they would advise them their current

blinds wouldn’t fit after the new windows were in place. Andria took this as an opportunity to start a business that would offer top quality window coverings to homeowners who are renovating, building new or wishing to update their décor. Starting Shademaker Blinds and More allowed Andria the chance to go into the homes of clients and offer decorating services. “I’ll do a full window covering consultation while incorporating everything into the home’s new or current décor. It’s truly the best feeling to have made such a difference in someone’s home.”

Opening your own business is a lot of hard work and takes patience and dedication, but Andria is confident anyone can do it with the right motivation. For Andria, that motivation comes from her children, who she cared for as a single mother for many years, often struggling to make ends meet. She notes that even in the darkest times her love for her family has kept her going. “If you want something out of life, you have to go get it. When asked for words of wisdom to pass on to budding entrepreneurs, Andria thoughtfully says, “Stay true to yourself. Don’t let being a business owner go to your head — it makes you look bad. Never talk badly about your competition. Your reputation means a lot, and what you say says a lot about you.” Andria gives thanks every day for her loving and supportive husband, five beautiful children and the ability to do what she is passionate about.

rowing up, Yolandi Lombard always knew one day she would own and operate her own business. A large part of her dream stemmed from her parents, both of whom embraced a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Their encouragement and support has been a driving force for Yolandi throughout her adult life. “I grew up with the mentality of, ‘do it, step out and try it and if it doesn’t work, then try something else.’ My parents were always very supportive of whatever I wanted to do,” she says. It was this loving support that encouraged Yolandi as she pursued her pharmacy degree. Shortly after starting her career

“When I went to visit the showroom at CNG Stone, I spoke to Susan and within minutes she had samples and graphics out showing me colours and styles. I thought to myself, ‘Oh my gosh! Helping You Make Informed

Financial Choices By John Barabe

The times are changing. From a financial perspective, whether we like it or not, we are entering a period of increased volatility. With a correction late in the summer, the turmoil in the Chinese markets and lack of movement from the U.S. Federal Reserve, it’s safe to say we could be in for a rough ride. International markets are more connected than ever before and it’s essential to make sure investment choices are suitable so they can excel in this new global market that is past due for a major decline.

W

hen we were at the height of the tech bubble in 2000, people were borrowing to invest at levels that were never before seen. At that time, these “margin” loans peaked at just over $100 billion1. Just before the U.S. financial crisis in 2007, margin loans peaked at about $80 billion. Today, the level of debt to invest is greater than these two events combined2. For evidence on the havoc this can create in the markets, look no further than China. A market crash was compounded into a major decline due to the over leveraged nature of their investors3. Based on the above evidence, it would seem North American markets are entering a similar stage. Just as the massive forced selling of American real estate was caused by house prices falling below mortgage values, margin loans cause the stock market to be sold hard. This is only one factor, but it is easy to understand and it points to an increased forced selling of the stock market if a major decline should occur in these volatile times. top photo L-R Verna, John, and Madison Barabe, Carol Phaneuf, David Lowey photo by Calvin Fehr

BUSINESS

“We’ve trusted John Barabe as our financial advisor for years. He takes time to explain what’s happening with our investments and makes sure that we are informed investors. He is conscientious, diligent, respected and approachable. John is also a continuous learner and works very hard at keeping up to date on everything. He really is the best fit for us and we always recommend him to others.” - Lynn and Ignace Minja The current belief in the industry that you can “diversify” your risk away was proven wrong in 2008 when these “diversified” investments experienced unacceptable declines. With my direction, my clients excelled in the very difficult period of 2007 to 2012. Through sound advice about when to sell, buy and hold, my clients rebounded faster and attained impressive returns.

As you know, minor adjustments can often lead to major improvements down the road. Either way, I will make myself available and ensure this is a great investment of your time.

Everyone needs direction with their life savings, not another asset allocation plan. Through my focus on investments, I teach not only how to position yourself against a potential crisis, but how market shifts can create opportunity for those privy to the value I can add. For taking the time to read this article, I would like to make myself available to you to act as a sounding board. This is not a service for which you have to become a client; anyone can utilize this service. I’m doing this to help people make informed decisions with their financial future. During this process there are two things that could possibly occur: 1. I will validate your current approach as fundamentally solid. 2. I reveal a few minor flaws that you may want to consider adjusting.

Cottage Succession Planning: Preparing for the Future Previous generations may not be familiar with these challenges because the current environment in Saskatchewan is unprecedented. Capital gains tax didn’t exist until 1972. Until 1982, a spouse could claim the cottage as his or her primary residence, and until March 1992 the $100,000 lifetime capital gains exemption was available on all property. Between 1992 and 2005, we saw very little growth in Saskatchewan real estate. As a result, capital gains on recreational property was insignificant and the penalty for failing to plan was inconsequential.

t’s been another fabulous summer at the cottage. As we prepare it for winter, it is a good time to reflect on the lasting memories we’ve created and ponder the future. If keeping the cottage in the family for the next generation is a priority, then it is wise to begin planning for this transfer. Lurking under the surface of your summer haven could be costly tax and estateplanning issues.

82

FineLifestyles

Regina

Tax and estate-planning for cottages have been exclusive to more prestigious areas, such as the Kootenay and Muskoka regions. It’s only been in the last 10 years that we have had significant taxable growth on residential property in Saskatchewan. Data provided by Dale Ripplinger of Realty Executives shows the median price of Saskatchewan residential properties increased 259 per cent from 2005 to 2014. This growth is taxable upon transfer of a non-primary residence as a capital gain. While many parents want to gift or bequeath the cottage to their children, the tax burden could cost you a lot of cash and, in extreme cases, could force a sale of the property. To avoid this situation, discuss planning strategies with your financial planner. LIFE INSURANCE Of the options available, a life-insurance strategy, if structured properly, is the simplest and usually the least expensive method to reduce and defer the tax

liability. The amount of insurance is aligned with the future tax liability and parents or children can pay the premiums. The proceeds are tax-free and are available exactly when the taxes are due. TRUST If established before there is any gain, an inter vivos trust can be very useful to defer tax to the next generation. Depending on their age and assets, their primaryresidence exemption could be used to reduce the capital gain. However, the 21year deemed disposition rule could force you to trigger taxes before you are ready. SAVE A well-structured, tax efficient investment plan is prudent for many financial planning issues. However, when we are unsure when the funds will be necessary, it is wise to include insurance as a risk management tool. BORROW If there is not a plan in place, the children may have to borrow funds to pay the tax. SELL When the memories created are priceless, selling the summer haven is the most expensive option. I’d be happy to discuss these issues in greater detail, or any of your other estate or insurance concerns. There will not be a fee for our meeting, parking is provided and the coffee is fresh! Bill Allen has been a Certified Financial Planner with Sun Life Financial for 22 years, is a proud member of Advocis, and is a recipient of the National Quality Award.
