ITALIAN-INSPIRED

STYLE

By Lisa Drader-Murphy National Fashion Columnist Photo Sue Siri Photography

I arrived in Rome in late summer, just as tourist season was winding down and the fashion season was winding up. After 25 years in fashion design, this was my first trip to Italy and I was excited to experience firsthand — and be inspired by — the storied, iconic fashion houses and the street wear that inspire them.

W

aiting for my friends to arrive, I had a cab drop me off at a random location near the Spanish Steps, where I wandered around for hours enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of this amazing city. As I window-shopped, I watched the people on the streets and tried to get a sense of how Dolce & Gabanna, Versace and Armani had influenced them in their fashion and lifestyle.

Looking back into the history of Italian fashion, it isn’t difficult to understand what gave Italy such status in the fashion world. In 1951, Count Giorgini started the ‘Italian Fashion’ craze when he organized an international fashion show in Florence. He continued to present fashion shows at his palace, bringing new collections, often modelled by nobility, and incorporating Italian fine art. These shows contributed to elevating the international status

influenced this place, but the other way around. The history, art, architecture and landscape — the very soul of Italy — has defined its fashion houses.

Lisa Drader-Murphy, National Fashion Columnist, Fine Lifestyle Magazine of Italian fashion and reinforcing its reputation of ultimate luxury. In the ’70s and ’80s, Milan made its mark as the fashion capital of Italy, and the phrase “Made in Italy” became universally recognized as representing the height of quality. Downtown Rome is a cobblestone melting pot of high-end fashion, discount shops, outdoor bistros and street vendors. I took in the array of locally crafted leather handbags and shoes and was overcome by the smell of coffee and fresh tomato sauce. After purchasing five handbags I made one last acquisition — a wheeled duffle bag to haul them around in for the remainder of my evening. Eventually I settled at a private table at a tiny restaurant on a side street, ordered a caprese salad and a glass of “vino rosso” and indulged in people watching.

The street wear was both subtle and ostentatious. Flowing dresses, highwasted skirts, billowing sheer Frenchcuffed shirts, pointed heels, vibrantly coloured clutches and petite bags were prominent. These traditional semblances of beauty and refinement were contrasted further by women’s bold appropriation of typical men’s styles, including baggy men’s pants paired with feminine tops, chunky shoes and busy line patterns. Over the following days I met many wonderful people. Most were locals, but some from abroad, and all happily immersed in the culture and lifestyle. I quickly realized Italy is a place where people work to live, where friends and family come first, and where their rich and incredible history isn’t something that’s trapped in a museum but is lived and breathed every day. After a week of this wonderful country, it hit me: Versace and Armani have not

unnyside Mall is embarking on a bright new future. By expanding its boutique shopping experience, they will feature some of the best, most unique and sought-after products and services in the city. Sunnyside is working to create a place where shoppers can enjoy their visit beyond a simple transaction. The idea is to create a destination — tapping into a social aspect and delivering a shopping experience you can only get at Sunnyside Mall. They offer a place for customers to be entertained, dine, meet friends and family, to connect with their community, and to receive excellent customer service.

Over the last few months, Sunnyside Mall has welcomed a host of unique, local retailers and designers, including Statement, Limoncello Lifestyle, Boso Bamboo Boutique, Turbine by Lisa DraderMurphy, Liquid Gold, Maja’s Saraj Bakery, World Tea House and The Middle Spoon. SARAJ BAKERY Saraj Bakery’s expansion into the Bedford area is crowned with the opening of Maja’s in Sunnyside Mall. “It seemed like a match made in heaven,” says Sanja Pahole, owner of Saraj Bakery. “A chic and upbeat place to call home!” Just like the parent store, Saraj Bakery in New Minas, Maja’s passion is ‘real’ food without additives or preservatives. They make high-end desserts — everything from European classics, wedding cakes and artisanal breads, to luscious baked goods. Maja’s will also cater to people with special dietary needs or different lifestyle choices, such as vegan, vegetarian, diabetics or celiac disease. “Scrumptious and healthy for good health and clean living is our motto,” says Pahole. Maja’s offers an amazing sit-down area where customers can enjoy exotic Turkish coffee amongst their other coffee selections. TURBINE Canadian designer Lisa Drader-Murphy designs and produces seasonal collections of fashion that are of-themoment, yet enduring in quality and expression of timeless design, all from a renovated apple barn on her orchard in the Annapolis Valley. Turbine has received editorial coverage from media such as CNN, New York Times, Entertainment Tonight, BFM Europe, Vogue, Cosmo, Flare, ELLE and CTV, and has been spotted on red carpets around the world. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Missi Pyle, and Michelle Rodriguez are among the many celebrities who have selected Turbine for their wardrobes. “I chose Sunnyside Mall to open my fourth store in Nova Scotia for their forward-thinking leasing strategy of focusing on unique boutiques and for the wonderful energy between shops and clients,” says Lisa Drader-Murphy, owner of Turbine. Lisa Drader-Murphy, owner, Turbine

BOSO BAMBOO BOUTIQUE Terry Stuart, owner of Boso Bamboo Boutique, is proud to be part of the newly improved family of merchants in Sunnyside Mall. “We believe that our Sunnyside Mall store, in conjunction with our Wolfville location, enables us to offer one of the largest assortments of luxurious and soft Canadian made bamboo clothing in Eastern Canada,” says Stuart. Bamboo clothing is hypoallergenic, antifungal and wrinkle and static cling resistant. Its thermal regulation keeps you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. To top it off, its superior wicking ability keeps you dryer than cotton. “Bamboo from Boso will not only be the softest clothing you wear this season but it’ll be your favourite. Feel the difference bamboo makes. You’ll love it,” says Stuart. Terry Stuart, owner, Boso Bamboo Boutique

World Tea House LIMONCELLO LIFESTYLE As you walk through the doors, you will feel an attack of the senses, splashes of vibrant colour from Fiesta dishware, soothing scents of Rocky Mountain soaps and like a crow you are drawn to the sparkle and bling of the Kameleon jewelry collection. “Born from necessity, my team and I search for unique and affordable products from around the world,” says Glenn Martin, owner of Limoncello Lifestyle. “Our location at Sunnyside Mall is the perfect fit, as we are surrounded by like-minded, unique shops and services.” The store is a mixture of bling for the body and bling for the home, featuring local and imported products. “Come in and treat yourself, you deserve it!” Glenn Martin, owner, Limoncello Lifestyle

WORLD TEA HOUSE “World Tea House is a realization of my passions in life — being an entrepreneur and a love for organic products and quality tea,” says Philip Holmans, owner of World Tea House. After opening his doors in July 2010, World Tea House quickly gained popularity in Halifax as its premium tea retailer, specializing in small batch handcrafted teas. The next chapter in Holmans’ tea journey was to open a second location in Sunnyside Mall. “I’m looking forward to providing the Bedford community with organic teas from around the world.” Philip Holmans, owner, World Tea House

LIQUID GOLD Liquid Gold is Canada’s first “tasting bar” for extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The bar in Sunnyside Mall’s Marketside is Liquid Gold’s fifth store. Like the new Sunnyside, nothing about Liquid Gold is commonplace. Everything about it is exquisite. All of the extra virgin olive oils (evoo) and balsamics are served in bulk. Each one is bottled on-site only after you sample their heady flavours and textures. Every evoo is ultrapremium, which is the most demanding standard for the finest oils in the world. Liquid Gold’s olio nuevo (fresh oil) changes harvest regions and hemispheres every six or seven months. Now that’s fresh! Every sweet, zingy consortium balsamic vinegar and balsamic condimento is produced in the traditional way from trebbiano grapes from Reggio Emilia or Modena, Italy. Cold weather can wreak havoc on your hair, whether it’s limp and fine, thick and unruly or anything in between. The Parlour Boutique Salon has a new blow-dry treatment in from Kerastase called Discipline, which dries hair three times faster with less frizz. “We describe it as Spanx for the hair,” says salon owner Jacquelyn LeRue. “Like Spanx, it doesn’t change your shape, it just gives you a better, smoother version and a more polished, refined look in any season.”

Kerastase, the premium level product line that The Parlour Boutique Salon offers for all salon treatments and take home hair care regimes, offers a huge range of products for adding moisture to any hair type. “It’s incredibly prescriptive,” says LeRue. “It’s luxurious and there’s something for everybody.” If you want to continue lightening your hair safely all winter long, Parlour Boutique Salon offers the new Olaplex treatment. It’s a bond multiplier that’s added to the lightening formula. It allows the stylist to lighten hair further, more evenly and with absolutely no breakage or damage. “It’s revolutionary,” says LeRue. “There’s never been a product like that before. It leaves the hair in such great condition: shiny, healthy and strong.” Parlour Boutique Salon client Jessie Dow’s hair is finally the cool, white blonde

Eat, Drink and Be Married: A Guide to PlAnninG Your dreAm WeddinG By Henny Buffinga

This is it. You’ve finally found the person you want to spend the rest of your life with and you want to celebrate it with everyone you love. Whether you’ve dreamed about it since you were young, or just started thinking about it when you met that special someone, now is the time to enjoy yourself and celebrate your own happiness — because how often do we actually get to do that? Don’t get too stressed out by the details; planning and organizing ahead of time will help you take care of everything so you can relax on the big day.

Hire a Wedding Planner hile you may think you will be able to plan your own wedding, the reality is that many of us are too busy to take care of all the details on top of our other commitments. Before you start, carefully consider whether you will be able to see it through, because hiring a planner at the last minute to fix

everything won’t be as easy as working with one from the beginning. Because of their experience, a wedding planner can bring a wonderful catalogue of ideas to the table. Consider a destination Wedding If you and your partner are more interested in the honeymoon than the minute details of planning a wedding,

or want something more low-key and intimate, consider a destination wedding. Close friends and family will be willing to join you, and often the most reluctant attendees have the most fun. If sun and sand isn’t your preference, consider an Arctic cruise or travel to Iceland for a ceremony under the Northern Lights.

tips for the web savvy: • Use a hashtag — guests will snap selfies and other priceless pictures during the ceremony and reception; if you set a hashtag you can easily find them all later on Instagram or Twitter. You can set up a cute blackboard sign with instructions for your guests. • Use the Songza app at the reception or pre-ceremony cocktail hour — simply tap the “concierge” button and choose an activity (“cocktail party” or “pleasing a crowd” might work) — and go! • Use the Mint app to track spending — Mint is a free personal finance management system that will break down your wedding budget, and you can set alerts to let you know how much you have left in the budget at all times. • Get Inspired on Pinterest — Pinterest is a great place to get inspiration for DIY projects that give that rustic theme that’s in style right now — think burlap, mason jar tealights, and tree trunk cake stands.

Plan tHe Ceremony and reCePtion Communication is important when it comes to envisioning the wedding, so sit down with your partner and discuss what you each have in mind for venues, music, flowers, food, as well as who will officiate, who will be invited, and who will stand for you. The guest list affects many of your decisions, so it is good to take care of that sooner rather than later. The bridal party is another tricky issue, but don’t feel the need to ask every single close friend to stand. Some friends will actually be relieved to not have to spend the time and money on the event, and will actually be more motivated to help out when they can. CHoose a PHotograPHer Weddings can be a whirlwind, and all the details you spent a year obsessing over are seemingly over in an instant. The photographer will help you remember the special day for years to come, and they are well worth the investment. This should be one of the first things you look into, because the good photographers are booked months or even years in

advance. Make sure to check out a few options, and ask for recommendations from people who share your aesthetic. Above all, choose someone you are comfortable with because you will be seeing them a lot that day. CHoose a dress Dress shopping is a very personal thing, but there are some good tips out there for how to start your search. Finding a good silhouette will help you narrow down the options before focusing on the details of the dress. Taking your camera with you is a great way to remember what you tried on and make sure the mirror isn’t lying to you, but call ahead to check if the boutique allows it first. Remember that wedding dress sizes run larger than your regular size so don’t get caught up on the number on the label. And don’t feel pressured to take a group of girlfriends with you; often that will just put more pressure on you, and dresses are almost always non-refundable so it’s better to make the decision on your own or with select trusted friends or family.

The yurt is a collapsible circular framework of wooden poles used as far back as 3,000 years ago by a horse-riding nomadic nation of people throughout central Asia. It can still be found in use across the globe today, from a cosy cabin or studio to a gathering space. Its surprising strength, durability and the natural and sustainable way they are created is a testament to their ingenuity.

In our everyday lives we spend all of our time in the square of our homes and workplaces. A circular space creates an atmosphere that makes people feel grounded and present. This opens the door for exciting possibilities for my signature pieces but in no way diminishes the timeless beauty of classic, vintage or traditional designs. “ Purchasing an engagement ring is often the most memorable and emotionally significant investment a couple can make. With that in mind, jewellery inspired by that emotion is indeed a symbol of commitment. “At Frida, our exclusive bridal creations are our commitment to you, your story, your now and tomorrow,” says Carrie. How to Have it All

I

t’s easy for a bride and groom to feel overwhelmed by wedding decisions and costs — from the guest list to the venue and catering options. While many brides dream of their wedding day since they are young girls, planning the event can turn their vision of “having it all” into a process of crunching numbers and minimizing the special details they wish for. Not anymore. For couples planning to wed in the Halifax or Dartmouth area, a new 2015 wedding package called “I Want it All” is available at BEST WESTERN PLUS Dartmouth Hotel & Suites, enabling brides and grooms to create a beautiful wedding that gives their guests a little bit of everything. With a 4,200-sq.-ft. ballroom that can be decorated in your wedding’s particular style or theme, cocktail hour, a threecourse dinner, and complimentary jacuzzi suite for the newlyweds, “I Want it All” offers exceptional value, offered by a team of professionals with a combined 75 years of hospitality experience. “Clients tells us we’re very accommodating,” says Best Western Dartmouth’s catering manager Shannon Rafuse. “Your wedding can be simple and elegant or the fairytale princess wedding you always dreamed of.” Built six years ago, BEST WESTERN PLUS is located in a convenient area of Dartmouth, surrounded by trees with two lakes nearby — ideal for

capturing wedding photos. Guests enjoy contemporary guest rooms, a complimentary hot breakfast, pool facilities and exercise room. Best Western can accommodate weddings up to 300 people, with a range of options available both within and outside of the “I Want it All” package. Award-winning in-house chef Daniel Delorme creates everything from extravagant buffets to perfectly plated three-course dinners for wedding events, and can customize the menu to each couple’s preferences. Rehearsal and smaller-scale reception dinners can be held at the hotel’s dining establishment, Trendz Restaurant and Wine Bar. Designed as an addition three years ago, the hotel’s Chardonnay Ballroom is naturally lit and features warm, neutral

colours — an excellent blank canvas for decorating. The room is divided into two parts and transforms from ceremony venue to reception area. Best Western provides complimentary vases and table centerpiece options, including one with mirrored tiles that reflect candlelight throughout the room. Audiovisual equipment can project a slideshow on three different large-size screens. Rafuse says clients who hold their wedding at Best Western love the ease of having everything in one place — rehearsal dinner, ceremony, cocktail hour, reception and accommodations. Bridal parties can even have their hair and makeup team on location in their suites, and wedding photos can be taken amongst the beautiful outdoor scenery.

BEST WESTERN PLUS’ event team manages the details of the wedding, as communicated by the bride and groom, so they and their guests can relax and enjoy their day. Clients who choose Best Western as their venue receive guidance and professionalism from the staff. “Wedding planning doesn’t need to be stressful, it should be fun,” says Rafuse.

Find Your

S

earching for a wedding gown is a special event for a bride and her family. Because it’s a once in a lifetime occasion, brides want to make sure they choose “the perfect dress.”

“Planning for a wedding is one of the most memorable times in your life,” says Chester & Felicity’s Christa Akerman, who co-owns the store with Karyn McCombe. “Whether you are having an elaborate church ceremony or a backyard barbecue, choosing what to wear is one of the most important purchases a bride will make.” Locally owned and operated, Chester & Felicity offers everything a bride-to-be and her wedding party will need. In addition to wedding gowns, they have bridesmaid, flower girl and mother of the bride/groom dresses, as well as suit and tuxedo rentals for men. If you are a discerning bride, look no further. Chester & Felicity has a unique collection of wedding gowns, including Pronovias, Nicole Miller, Paloma Blanca and WTOO by Watters — all of which are exclusive to Chester & Felicity in Nova Scotia. Other spectacular lines in store include Allure and Maggie Sottero. Bridal parties are encouraged to make an appointment at Chester & Felicity and provide information about their big day to assist the staff. “We like to know where they’re getting married, the theme, the style of dress they envision and budget,” says Akerman. “When they come in, they will have one person dedicated to them for the duration of their visit. The salesperson’s attention will not be divided amongst multiple brides. We feel that’s so important.”

30

FineLifestyles

To begin the appointment, we like to give the bride an opportunity to pick a handful of dresses to try. “We’ll let her get into the dresses she’s picked,” says Akerman, “and then we’ll listen to what she likes or doesn’t like about them. Listening to a bride is the most important thing we can do to help guide her.” Her consultant will select some dresses based on her information and what she says about the dresses she’s tried. “It’s common for a bride to be torn between two very different dresses,” says Akerman. “We try to help her narrow it down as much as possible.” If the idea of shopping for a wedding dress on a busy Saturday is a little daunting, brides can schedule a Diamond Appointment. This is a private consultation outside regular business hours with the entire bridal floor open only to the bride and her party. The appointment time is extended to three hours with an experienced and knowledgeable member of the team there to help. Customer Tanya Steadman says she and her bridal party had a lot of fun at Chester & Felicity with their salesperson, Micky. “The atmosphere, Micky’s personality, help and ideas were the best,” says Steadman. “I will forever recommend the store!” Chester & Felicity is especially known for putting a bride at ease while providing a warm and comfortable place without any pressure. “Our brides get a wonderful product, in an amazing environment, with the help of truly experienced people who want them to have a wonderful time doing it,” says Akerman. “There’s nothing more rewarding than helping the bride find the perfect dress and see her walk away without the weight of the world on her shoulders.” Chester & Felicity 1479 Dresden Row Halifax, N.S. 902.421.1999 www.chesterandfelicity.com

Off the Bridal Path By Rebecca Henderson

You may remember Princess Diana’s gown. If not, a quick Google search will jog your memory. Her dress was big, with puffy sleeves, layers of lace that covered her forearms, and a train that billowed behind her as she entered the St. Paul’s Cathedral.

“I

t was the biggest dress of life,” says Angel Spendlove, co-owner and designer for & For Love, a contemporary bridal fashion house founded in Toronto. “But that was the ‘80s. I think brides now want to go back to being simple and elegant and not so crazy. It can be small and intimate and still be special,” says Spendlove. “Think Bianca Jagger’s pantsuit and how different and cool it was in the ‘70s.”

Spendlove describes an evolution in bridal-wear, starting with the simple elegance of the 1920s and moving to the bohemian-chic era of the 1970s. “I think it’s slowly getting more relaxed,” she says of the modern bride. “The last 20 years got really strange.” This year, for many wedding dresses on the runway, the construction of the dress is beginning to reflect an era away from tradition. Even ball gowns, prom dresses and pantsuits are viable options for the big day. In fact, looking at the boards on Pinterest, it’s not uncommon to find pins of everyday dresses for inspiration such as when Keira Knightley re-wore a Chanel cocktail dress for her wedding. “It’s off the rack, and it’s fun,” says Spendlove. “Now more than ever, brides are more in tune with what they want. It really does go back to the bride’s personality and the wedding environment — it influences the dress choice so much. We’re all not the same, so why should our wedding dresses be?” & For Love, Oscar De La Renta and Claire Pettibone wedding dresses are sold in Kleinfelds, Toronto’s premium wedding dress shop located in the Hudson’s Bay Company.

La Renta debuted its 2013 Look 33 — a white sequined bird’s nest knit sweetheart column gown with a blue tulle tiered overskirt that provided its something blue right to the dress. Many wedding designers are opting for pops of colour on the runway. It also isn’t surprising to see a wedding dress that is one full colour either. “I have a friend who wore a tangerine dress for her wedding inside a pub,” recalls Spendlove. “She looked absolutely beautiful. However, I still prefer white — although I do like pale blushes and grays for a hint of colour.” Many of & For Love’s creations are white with a relaxed fit such as its Amy Sheath gown, which features a v-neckline, opened sides, a fully beaded waistband and a fishtail skirt. The dress is embellished with faux pearls, crystals and gunmetal lace. Spendlove says, for many women, the environment of the wedding has a huge influence on the dress as well. A forest wedding may evoke A Midsummer’s Night Dream gown such as Los Angeles fashion designer Claire Pettibone’s Raven wedding dress — made with black tulle and embroidered with pink and red roses.

THE NEW YOU

A New Year, A

new you By Trina Annand

The idea of starting a new year with self-improvement is common practice, but it’s important to remember the timing of this journey is less important than the approach itself. By taking a whole body tactic for looking and feeling better, you will likely be more rewarded than if you tackle a single pronged plan. Here are some areas to concentrate on as you embark on a new you.

Anti-aging

“T

he term anti-aging has been taken over by the cosmetic industry,” says Dr. Christian Hackshaw of Advance MD in Halifax. “As a result, many people think it is simply about looks alone. Anti-aging is really a matter of slowing the aging process of our cells.” He says when turning back the hands of time, it’s often the small changes that make the biggest difference. Hackshaw has developed a list of changes that make a world of difference and that anyone can enact. Here are his Top 5. 1. Eliminate or significantly reduce the refined carbs in your diet. 2. Increase your fitness level by doing resistance and cardio training three times a week for at least 30 minutes. 3. Get your hormones checked, rebalanced and replaced if you’re over 40 years of age. Modern hormone replacement has made great strides over the last few decades; doctors can

now use your own hormones to boost your levels. 4. Use supplements that promote longevity like Vitamin D, Omega 3 fatty acids and other natural inflammatories. 5. Reduce the stress in your life. Remove the smaller stressors that tend to pile up and take up a stress reducing activity like yoga, meditation or Tai Chi.

Fitness When approaching a new fitness regime, it’s important to remember the changes need to suit your lifestyle. People will often make a plan to go to the gym every day, but with today’s busy lifestyles, they are rarely successful. Yoga comes in many shapes and forms, combining the benefits of relaxation and added flexibility with a good workout. “I wasn’t a yoga person until I tried Bikram Yoga. My brother challenged me to a 30-day 30-session adventure and I have been hooked ever since. It really changed my life,” says Kristin Johnston, owner of Bikram Yoga Halifax.

looking for ways to improve their smile. “A beautiful white smile can make a very dramatic impact on a person’s appearance, it opens up a person and can really change their lives,” says Dr. Ryan Thomas of Smile Innovations. Teeth whitening is a common request for many dentists because over time, teeth naturally darken and yellow; white enamel is worn away and exposes the yellow dentin.

With yoga as their guide, people of all ages, activity levels and lifestyles can find a challenging and rewarding activity that fits seamlessly into their day. Yoga has been proven to reduce stress, strengthen a person’s body, improve flexibility and create better posture — an especially important benefit for office dwellers.

As the largest organ of our body, as well as our only barrier to the outside world, skin has a lot of work to do and can often show its age as a result. Beyond the standard mantras of drinking lots of water, washing your face with a high-quality product, and wearing sunscreen year-round, there are multiple treatments that can help promote healthy younger looking skin.

A great smile has the power to boost confidence; as a result, people are often

“Skincare depends on a person’s skin type; it’s important to seek a professional’s opinion before planning a skincare regime,” says Susan Alward, owner of Summit Skincare and Hair Removal. “Just because you read retinol is good for you doesn’t mean you should use it. Finding the right percentages of each product ensures that products don’t negatively effect your skin.” The Halifax skincare specialist has seen a growing trend in the industry toward Botox, chemical peels, facials and ultrasonic and laser treatments. To avoid further wear from misalignment, there are a number of options other than traditional wire braces to create a healthy smile. A mini smile makeover is a simple option. Rather than full dental overhauls, some procedures can take place in as little as one office visit. Dental shaping, which can take only minutes, alters the angles of teeth and can give certain smiles a very different look. Those with a lot of gum exposure in their smiles may benefit from gum sculpting through the use of dental lasers to create a more natural look. Communication is key throughout the journey of becoming a new you. Seek the advice of professionals to make the transition as smooth as possible.

As cosmetic dental clients can have diverse concerns, Smile Innovations Dentistry’s clientcentered “one-chair” policy provides each with undivided attention. “Cosmetic procedures begin with a one-on-one smile consultation,” says Dr. Ryan Thomas, founder of Smile Innovations Dentistry in Fall River. “At this consultation, we take photographs, perform a thorough smile analysis, address concerns and explore various treatment options.” There’s no one “right way’” to make over a smile, says Dr. Thomas. “We recognize that each client is unique, and numerous treatments are frequently available. It’s not all-or-nothing at Smile Innovations. We want to make sure people are given options.” The benefits of a smile makeover are not limited to cosmetic enhancements. Functional improvements are also seen. So whether you’re motivated by aesthetic or functional factors, Smile Innovations is open to you. “Self-consciousness about your smile can have a huge effect on confidence,” says Dr. Thomas. “Taking that step to change something for the better can be life-changing.”

n her first visit to Halifax Naturopathic Health Centre, Ingrid Foshay Murphy sat with her doctor for more than an hour, discussing every question she had about her health and lifestyle. “I had never gone to a naturopathic doctor before, and I was impressed by how much time they spent learning about me,” says Foshay Murphy. “In addition to taking a person’s medical history,” says Dr. Rosalyn Hayman, coowner of Halifax Naturopathic Health Centre, “we review their blood work,

evaluate their digestive function and nutritional status, and consider their genetics and their stressors.” The goal is to create an open dialogue between doctor and patient. “We are exchanging knowledge with our patients in every visit,” says Hayman. “When a person is part of a dialogue about their own wellness, and they learn more about what is happening inside of their body, they receive more than treatments — they feel empowered and can be active agents in managing their health.”

After all, the word “doctor” is derived from the Latin word meaning “teacher.” The information gathered is then used to create a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan. According to Dr. Maggie Pattillo, co-owner of the clinic, naturopathic medicine in the 21st Century is the art and practice of combining modern science with safe and natural therapies. “It’s designed to treat the root cause of illness, not to suppress symptoms,” says Pattillo. Treating the root cause of a person’s health concern often requires

energy, acupuncture to manage their hot flashes, herbal medicines to decrease inflammation, or a cutting edge test to evaluate the bacteria in their digestive tract. For Ingrid Foshay Murphy, her battle with breast cancer was made exceptionally easier with the help and understanding of her team at HNHC. “They took into consideration my standard treatments, and formulated a naturopathic plan that would complement it and enhance overall clinical benefit. They continue to monitor my blood work and keep up-to-date with the latest scientific research in nutrition and natural medicine. I incorporate their advice and practices into my daily life.” In a warm, professional setting, the Halifax Naturopathic Health Centre offers a full suite of natural health services. In addition to three naturopathic doctors, the centre offers the services of an acupuncturist, a registered holistic nutritionist, and an IV nutritional therapy clinic. She and the rest of the team at HNHC share test results and assessments with medical doctors, relay a patient’s dietary and supplement plan with referring therapists, and accept referrals from other physicians and fertility clinics, amongst other collaborative approaches. “When health care providers work together, our patients see huge benefits,” says Pattillo. “We are really practicing integrative medicine, helping people become well by using treatments from various disciplines, within our own clinic and beyond.” Patients at Halifax Naturopathic Health Centre may find themselves receiving an infusion of vitamins to boost their

’m going to make a bold prediction: If you are female and over 45, you are experiencing some degree of difficulty sleeping, loss of energy, new anxieties, brain fog, night sweats, and gaining weight around your midsection. If you are a man over 50, you are experiencing some degree of energy loss, loss of strength, weight gain, a change in your emotions and weaker erections. You have probably also attributed these changes to “getting older.” Most of these symptoms and signs are due to a loss and imbalance of your hormones, and you don’t have to experience them! AdvanceMD is now two years old, and in that short time we have helped more than 500 patients resolve or significantly improve these classic symptoms by replacing and rebalancing their missing hormones.

Through nutritional counselling and two different weight loss programs, we have helped patients shed more than 1,200 lbs., come off their diabetic medications, and their blood pressure meds. Each day we hear things like, “I have so much more energy,” “I haven’t slept this well in years,” “I have so much more capacity,” “I’ve lost 15 lbs.,” and, “The man I married is back!” These are actual patient statements, and they bring smiles to our faces. There was no Bikram yoga in the city and she saw an opportunity to open her own studio. Bikram Yoga Halifax is the first and only studio east of Quebec City. Johnston’s guiding principle is to provide a different type of yoga experience. You can see this difference as soon as you walk through the door. The careful detail put into the studio makes it a unique, spa-like experience rather than your average yoga centre. The heat exchange and humidifier system, responsible for maintaining a room temperature of 42C and humidity of 40 per cent, is state of the art. Johnston takes great pride in every last detail.

efore visiting The Salt Room, 19-yearold student Meghan Farrell was skeptical about halotherapy (salt therapy). She’s been dealing with cystic fibrosis her whole life and had been having home IV antibiotics or hospital admission bi-weekly. “Now I’ve been eight weeks without needing any of that,” says Farrell. “I haven’t spent that much time out of hospital in years. My doctors told me, ‘Don’t stop going.’ They are supportive of halotherapy. The treatment opens my lungs up and makes me feel more energetic because it’s so much easier to take a deep breath.” Co-owners Susan Terry and Kelly Bryden opened ABOVE Susan Terry, co-owner TOp RighT Client Meghan Farrell receiving treatment

The dimly lit salt therapy room is covered from floor to ceiling with thousands of pounds of rock salt imported from the Dead Sea. Pharmaceutical grade sodium chloride is crushed by a special generator and dispersed into the room in a dry salt aerosol. The tranquil room is furnished with five relaxing leather recliners, footstools, iPods and cosy blankets.

Continuing Education in Halotherapy

A thorough intake consultation with trained staff determines the sodium chloride concentration emitted by the generator to treat the client’s specific condition. The number of treatments required depends on the client. For example, a relatively healthy adult with chronic sinusitis might come 15 times for one course of treatment. Later in the year, that client may come back for another course of treatment. Salt therapy is not limited to individuals with respiratory or skin conditions — some clients come in to reduce stress and anxiety, or simply to experience a general overall sense of wellbeing. “We’ve had clients as young as six months right up to 82 years old,” says Terry. “It’s very gratifying to be able to help people feel so good with such a unique healing experience.”Parents brought in their six-month-old baby who was having difficulty breathing. “She struggled with her breathing and her lungs weren’t strong enough to give a productive cough,” says Terry. “After five treatments, her breathing was no longer

making a rattling sound. She was finally breathing normally.” The Salt Room sees post-cancer patients, chemotherapy patients and those with a wide range of other health issues or individuals who want to maintain good health by strengthening their immune systems. Athletes who want a competitive edge are adding salt therapy to their training programs, as it increases lung capacity.

Terry and Bryden recently participated in the 15th Annual International Symposium of Halotherapy in the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland. While there, they became members of the International Salt Therapy Association and received in-depth continuing education in halotherapy. They are proud to announce that The Salt Room, Halifax, is now Atlantic Canada’s distributor and representative for Halomed, the world’s leading research-based manufacturer of halotherapy equipment.

Initial treatments are complimentary but value packages are recommended for clients to receive the full accumulation of the therapeutic effect. Farrell says, “It really works. People should try it.” The Salt Room 3514 Joseph Howe Dr. Suite #15 Halifax, N.S. 902.406.5433 info@thesaltroom.ca www.thesaltroom.ca

bsolutely we can! Interceptive orthodontics includes growth modification. Growth modification in orthodontics utilizes a series of different appliances, such as headgear, expanders and removable retainer-like appliances to change the relationship of the teeth and jaw bones.

Can We Change the Way a Child’s Jaws Are Growing?

Consider a child with a significant overbite, where the top teeth are ahead of the bottom teeth by a large amount. A lot of children with such an overbite can look like they have “buck teeth” and a small lower jaw that looks like it is too far back. Teeth that stick out too far forward are more prone to trauma and breakage. Growth modification appliances, when used at the right time during pre-pubertal growth, can reduce the overbite substantially. For a lot of children, a growth modification appliance can improve the profile of the face and balance the jaws. Not all patients are good candidates for these types of appliances. If you suspect a bite problem, it is imperative to have your child screened by an orthodontist to see if he or she would benefit from such treatment. Frequently, growth modification prevents jaw surgery in the future. It is always better to improve a poor growth pattern than to correct the result of one later with an operation. When a child is growing into an underbite, the top front teeth sit inside the bottom front teeth. A lot of these children look like their lower jaw is prominent; meanwhile, it is actually their upper jaw that is not growing forward enough. By using a special headgear appliance, which is worn after school and overnight, we can make the upper jaw grow properly and correct an underbite. In fact, we prevent a surgical correction in approximately 80 per cent of underbite patients in our practice. A screening by age seven is very important for our patients because the optimal age for this therapy is usually between eight and nine years of age.

BEFORE FIG A

ABOVE Reverse pull head gear to correct an underbite.

Crossbites of back teeth and narrow upper jaws are also issues that can be corrected with growth modification appliances known as expanders. Palatal expanders actually increase the width of the upper jaw so the lower jaw can properly relate to an upper jaw that was previously too narrow. These expanders also create additional space for teeth. Sometimes these crossbites can cause a shift in how the teeth line up when a child bites. Such a functional shift in orthodontics can cause asymmetrical growth and must be intercepted as soon as possible, ensuring growth continues in a symmetrical fashion. Orthodontics, in our clinic, is as much about preventative treatment and interceptive treatment as it is about braces and aligners to correct poor bites, crooked teeth and misaligned jaws. Having your child screened at age seven can prevent severe problems that require more invasive and complex solutions once growth is complete. Growth modification therapy is a comfortable way to change the way a child’s jaw is developing or growing to create a balanced profile, a good bite and a lovely smile.

finally see a positive wellness shift occurring in today’s society. People are starting to realize the body works as a whole, and lifestyle choices have an impact on the quality of life we experience.

Visual Tools of Wellness: The CORE Score

Dr. Tasia Lazaros B.Sc.(H), D.C.

Healthy Link Chiropractic Wellness Ctr. Inc. 201–362 Lacewood Drive, Halifax 902.446.5465 drt@healthylinkwellness.ca Visit our new updated website! www.healthylinkwellness.ca

Harmful daily lifestyle choices you should consider include stress, poor posture and ergonomics, poor diet, lack of exercise, lack of belief in the power of one’s own innate healing, and having an imbalance in the mind, body and spirit. It’s important to realize the body has a natural ability to heal. We all have an immune system controlled by the nervous system. Emotional, physical and/or environmental stress can all impact the nervous system and affect the immune system. The spine has a direct relationship with how the nervous system functions. When a segment in the spine is not moving well, it affects the nerve that leaves the spine from that segment. The corresponding area responds by affecting the muscles and movement in that area. Pain may also be present, but not always. Chiropractic is great, as it is a way to naturally restore movement and alignment to the spine — thus helping the nerves function better. Also, with chiropractic care, the body can better handle the stressors placed on it. Babies are great examples to use. If their mid-back area is “restricted,” they tend to exhibit acid reflux and an inability to lie on their back for a diaper change or sleep. The nerves in the mid-back area supply the digestive system. It has been reported that chiropractic care aimed at gently restoring the alignment in this area has helped minimize the issues quickly. Through continuing education, I found a great system to obtain a picture and report on how a patient’s neuromusculoskeletal system is working.

The CORE score system was developed to provide a measurable wellness goal to attain. The CORE score is described as a way “to accurately report on the efficiency of your central nervous system.” It gives an indication of where and how deeply the problem is affecting the spine and overall health. The CORE score is made up of the following three measurable tests: 1) HEART RATE VARIABILITY: It indicates how one can adapt to the environment. Stressful lifestyle habits can cause the body to be in a constant “fight or flight” mode. This can lead to exhaustion, weight gain, accelerated aging and poor heart health. Chiropractic care can actually increase the heart rate variability into a positive score. 2) MUSCLE TONE AND BALANCE (SURFACE EMG): It indicates how the muscles are functioning to maintain one’s posture and support and move the spine. As the nerves control muscles, muscle fatigue and poor energy distribution, indicated in this test, can be helped by chiropractic care. 3) ORGAN AND GLAND CONTROL (THERMAL SCAN): It indicates how the autonomic nervous system is working. Temperature differences along the spine are indicators of where stressors are building up. Again, chiropractic care can help improve this as well. A patient can be assessed in the clinic for all three tests and have a CORE score calculated. Basically, the best possible CORE score is 100. A personalized care plan can help a patient reach a higher score. Many chiropractic clinics are starting to use this tool in their practice, including Healthy Link Chiropractic Wellness Centre Inc.

Harnessing Light to Heal and Repair Skin and onward, LED light therapy expanded and more research and exciting studies found that not only were tissues being healed, but cosmetic conditions were improved as well. HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR MOST ASKED QUESTIONS:

entle and effective skin rejuvenation with LED light energy makes not all light bad for us. As we mentioned in part one of this two-part series, light is measured in wavelengths and harnessing some of these wavelengths has created great strides in skin rejuvenation. LED light therapy is an amazing example of this type of technology. I have been working with LED light therapy for more than 10 years, but it all started in 1903 with a scientist winning a Nobel Prize in medicine for the use of light therapy. By 1960, research had progressed and phototherapy (now LED therapy) was used mostly in Eastern Europe for the treatment of chronic pain, arthritis, joint rehab, soft tissue injury and other medical ailments. During the 1980s

Why does the light from this device not damage the skin like the light from the sun does? There are many wavelengths of light that come from the sun. Some are visible and some are not. Some damage the skin and some do not. The sun emits harmful UV (ultraviolet) light waves that can do more damage to our skin than good. The beneficial “visible” wavelengths of light (think of the colours of the rainbow) are neutralized by the skindamaging effects of the stronger ultraviolet wavelengths. LED light therapy works by delivering only visible wavelengths of light energy, completely UV-free, that have been proven to energize cells, stimulate the body’s natural process to build new proteins and regenerate cells similar to the benefits that plants receive from the sun. What are LED Light Treatments? LED, which stands for light emitting diodes, is the use of different wavelengths or colours of visible and infrared light. Each LED wavelength (colour) of light provides unique therapeutic benefits. Our LightWaves LED System is an FDA-approved device for its proven effectiveness for skin rejuvenation, pain relief and tissue repair.

What conditions can be treated with LightWaves LED? • Sun spots • Wrinkles • Wounds • Acne • Pain management • Scars • Rosacea/sensitive skin How many treatments will I need? This depends on what skin concerns you have. For skin rejuvenation/acne care, it is usually recommended in a series of eight treatments once or twice a week. We also combine this with other skin treatments to boost results and reduce downtime. For clients with sunburns, bruising, postop swelling, or other temporary concerns, we also offer single treatments to dramatically accelerate the skin recovery. How does it feel and look after? This has been referred to as our “magic wand” treatment because it feels like it is doing nothing but it achieves great results. The treatment consists of relaxing under a bright but gentle light for 10-20 minutes. For improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, the collagen repair process will not happen overnight; improvement is usually noticed after four to five weeks. What areas can these devices treat? Any area of your body can be treated. The most popular areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight, such as the face, neck, back of the hands, arms, chest and shoulders. How do I get started? Book a clinical skin care consultation with one of the Summit’s master clinical estheticians. During this time they will discuss your concerns and perform an assessment to determine if this is the correct treatment for you.

W

ith her new album, Shine On, and recent U.S. and Canadian tours, beloved singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan is looking to the future with hopeful optimism. “All my albums are postcards of where I am emotionally in my life,” McLachlan tells Fine Lifestyles in an interview just weeks before leaving on her cross-country fall tour. “I tend to tell stories about my own experiences through music. I feel like I have worked really hard to come back to a place where I feel strong and whole again, and Shine On reflects that.” In just a few short years, McLachlan faced a crisis of identity with a divorce, the death of her father, a split from her manager of more than two decades, and a failed reprisal of Lilith Fair. With a near complete collapse of her support system, she released Laws of Illusion in 2010. It was punctuated with the anguish and grief of that period of her life, a stark contrast to Shine On. After the chaotic

54

period of change, the artist has found light at the end of the tunnel and is embracing life with renewed enthusiasm, drinking up every moment. The dedicated mother of two girls — India Ann Sushil, 12, and Taja Summer, seven —McLachlan credits her children for keeping her afloat through the hard times. “My girls are my biggest and most beautiful distractions. I was very lucky to have them when I was fairly established and could take time off to just be a mom. It has opened up my heart exponentially and I get to see the world through their eyes,” says McLachlan. For the vocalist and musician who has sold more than 40 million records, won three Grammys and eight Junos, McLachlan counts her Vancouverbased Sarah McLachlan School of Music among her greatest achievements. The free after-school music program draws droves of youth, sparking their creativity and nurturing a love of music. There are almost 700 kids in the program this year, making a very real change in their lives.

Drawing inspiration from Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkle, Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell and other North American folk music, as well as Gaelic and Irish music, McLachlan has developed a unique sound all her own — a sound she has stayed true to throughout her career. She says there will be no pop or jazz albums in her future just to stay on a Top 10 list. “The best advice I ever got about my career was from Annie Lennox when I opened for her in New York many years ago. She said, ‘Don’t let anyone sway your heart.’ It’s advice I really took to heart,” remembers McLachlan. This year has seen McLachlan’s return to the electric guitar, releasing in her words a more wild side to herself. Being proficient in both guitar and piano also gives the artist the ability to work through songs with different instruments, often creating those coveted breakthrough moments in the writing process. “There are no mathematical equations to finishing a song, it’s different every time. The important thing is to stay open and knowing when to quit.”

“I feel very lucky to have been doing this for 26 years and that people still want to hear my work. There are a lot of ways to view success, I am my own harshest critic and knowing I’ve done my best, worked as hard as I could and was true to myself is important,” says McLachlan. The artist’s eighth studio album, Shine On contains song dedications to McLachlan’s father (Song for My Father and Broken Heart), her daughters (Beautiful Girl) and boyfriend, former NHL player Geoff Courtall (Flesh and Blood), whom she met at a Sarah McLachlan School of Music fundraiser. Shine On also includes a song that was originally about bullying and the

56

FineLifestyles

Halifax

strength of the female spirit, which later became an ode to education activist Malala Yousafza, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt in 2012. While on tour, McLachlan returns to her childhood home of Halifax, the scene of relentless childhood bullying and her musical awakening. At the tender age of four, McLachlan began learning to play the ukulele and taking voice lessons. “When I was a kid I wanted to be Joan Baez, my mom always had her music playing. I was drawn to beautiful melodies. I loved the feeling music gave me; it lifted me and nourished me. I was always singing for as long as I can remember, it was always in my head,” says McLachlan.

Though writing her own music takes more time (there are often three to seven years between albums), the end product is well worth the wait. It creates a more authentic sound for her fans that she loves to share. “Performing live is a culmination of all the blood, sweat and tears I have shed spending months, if not years, on something. Writing is a very isolated experience, so it’s great to be able to finally share it with people. There is a unique energy that is created playing live.” At 46, the artist has seen a lot of shifts in her life and in the music scene as a whole, but she has stayed true to herself and her sound through it all. Looking forward, McLachlan is planning to make the most out of every second she has. “If I am lucky my life is half over. I have been taking a good look at my life and thinking how I want to live it. I want to do as much as I can, have as much fun as I can, live as much as I can, love as hard as I can and give as much as I can. I want to shine, not just endure, to suck the marrow out of everyday. When you put forth that energy and light you get so much back,” says McLachlan.

Neptune Sets the Stage By Melanie Furlong

S

et in 1920s Canada, What a Young Wife Ought to Know tells the romantic story of Sophie, a young working-class woman who falls in love with a stable hand. Award-winning playwright Hannah Moscovitch, 36, found inspiration for the story by reading a book of letters written to Dr. Maria Stopes, a pioneer of the birth control movement in the 1920s, from women asking how they could prevent pregnancies. “They were so miserably desperate,” says Moscovitch. “There were women who were 27 years old who’d had 11 children, some of whom they’d lost to starvation, and who’d had several miscarriages as well. I got to see what a pre-birth control society must have been like and I had never read anything like it.”

Moscovitch is thrilled to premiere What a Young Wife Ought to Know at Neptune Theatre this winter as part of the theatre’s seasonal lineup. She says those who enjoy HBO projects like Boardwalk Empire or Mad Men will enjoy this show. Neptune’s artistic director George Pothitos couldn’t be more thrilled with the

talent taking the stage this season. “From a nostalgic holiday classic like A Christmas Story, to a hilarious Hitchcock spoof in The 39 Steps, to an exciting co-production with 2b theatre for the debut of What a Young Wife Ought to Know … it truly is an incredible lineup of live theatre.” Gracyn MacDonald, 12, is one of eight children performing in Neptune Theatre’s production of A Christmas Story. MacDonald plays Esther Jane, a classmate of Ralphie’s. “She has a huge crush on him,” says MacDonald. “And that kind of consumes her life.” Even if you don’t know the 1983 movie, MacDonald is certain you’ll enjoy the play. It features all of the elements from the beloved film, including the pink bunny suit, a triple-dog-dare to lick a frozen pole and the infamous leg lamp. “I think everyone can relate to Ralphie wanting that one special gift so badly,” she says. Halifax actor Rhys Bevan-John, 34, is returning home from Los Angeles this January to play (approximately) 18 roles as a clown in The 39 Steps.

The 39 Steps is one of Bevan-John’s favourite pieces of theatre. In fact, two years ago he performed in Theatre New Brunswick’s production of the show. “To my taste, it’s perfect,” he says. “I like playing the super over-the-top characters like the professor and Mrs. McGarrigle, a cheeky old Scottish lady.”

WORLD-CLASS

STEAK

or people who love steak, one of life’s great dining pleasures is indulging in a perfectly grilled premium cut. In Canada, typically the only way to enjoy steak that boasts world-renowned quality is to dine out at a world-class restaurant, where the tenderness, flavour, and texture of the steak far surpasses what’s available at the local butcher or grocery store. For steak lovers who don’t live in a large centre where these kinds of restaurants are available, beef options are limited to what’s supplied nearby. But what if you had access to the best steak in the world — no matter what part of the country you lived in — and could have it delivered to your doorstep?

60

FineLifestyles

That’s the concept behind Fuego Diablo (Fire Devil), a company launched this fall by local entrepreneur and steak fan Matt MacQuarrie. “Our mission is to provide access to the most delicious steak available,” says MacQuarrie. “Our steaks are not only truly exceptional, they’re consistently exceptional. You are guaranteed the experience of steak you would have in a world-class steak house, every time.” Fuego Diablo offers two steak options, their Gold label, a high-end USDA choice product, and their Black label, a USDA prime — the highest quality of steak available, with only two per cent of all beef produced in the U.S. qualifying for this category. The steak comes from regions in the U.S. such as Colorado and Texas, which are renowned for producing some of the highest-quality beef in the world. Customers can place orders of four or more steaks through Fuego Diablo’s website or over the phone. The steaks are flash-frozen at the peak of the aging process and individually vacuum-packed. Orders are packaged in a sleek black box, placed in a cooler with dry ice, and delivered to the customer’s doorstep. For someone anticipating grilling Matt MacQuarrie, owner superior quality, melt-in-your mouth steak at home, opening their cooler and seeing a cloud of dry ice vapour spill out around the black box is a moment to relish. Fuego Diablo has experienced early success since launching, with orders being placed across the country and customers saying the steak is the best they’ve ever had. MacQuarrie plans to grow the business throughout Canada and if all goes well, eventually the U.S. “We’re hoping to play a part in the grilling culture,” says MacQuarrie. “There is a whole foodie movement out there, and people who like beef need a voice too.” Fuego Diablo offers gift cards and the option to order steaks as a gift. “You can give someone the experience of the best steak they’ve ever had,” says MacQuarrie, “something they may not have had access to before.” Readers of this article can take advantage of free shipping with the promo code Halifax. Visit Fuego Diablo’s website to place your steak order and peruse the company’s blog posts, which explore such topics as steak culture and the difference between a carnivore and a “carnoisseur.” “We’re offering people the steakhouse experience at home,” says MacQuarrie. “For people who enjoy hosting and the grilling process, it’s an amazing product.”

Lake Chelan: Washington’s Other Wine Country

By Cheryl Doherty

I

had the great fortune to visit the West Coast of the U.S. this past August. A business trip to Montana seemed a good excuse to spend some time in neighbouring Washington wine country. After researching the usual American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) of Walla Walla and Yakima, we decided to visit Washington’s newest AVA, Lake Chelan. Although it only received official status in 2009, grapes have grown there for more than 100 years, and the first licensed winery began in 1998. You won’t find Lake Chelan wines in stores outside the area, but the sheer variety and style of wineries and wines make this a fantastic wine destination. Before making its mark as a wine region, Lake Chelan was already a popular holiday area. For oenophiles with or without children of any age, this is as

62

FineLifestyles

Halifax

good as it gets. Lake Chelan has a myriad of activities, including hiking, endless water sports and great golf. Some wineries feature family-style outdoor barbecues along with tastings, and koi ponds and playgrounds to delight young ones. For grownups, there are companies that offer limousine services for wine tours at a reasonable rate. With more than 20 wineries in a 30 km radius, it is impossible to describe them all, but here are a few gems we visited: Tsillan Cellars Tsillan Cellars is a stunning Italian villa of a winery, towering over the lake with a vast array of grapes under vine, including Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Syrah, Pinot Grigio, Gwertztraminer and Viognier. Casual fine dining indoors and out in opulent surroundings make it a must-stop on

your wine tour. Sinistra, an Italian-style red blend and Sempre Amore, a fragrant white blend, were two terrific finds. Tunnel Hill Winery and Karma Vineyards Nestled lower on the same slope is Tunnel Hill Winery. It’s small, folksy and friendly, with historic architecture and the best Pinot Noir we tasted in the region. Just down the road from Tunnel Hill, we found Karma Vineyards, a funky little winery producing fantastic traditional method sparkling wines using Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Syrah. Their 18 Brix restaurant offers excellent local cuisine on a charming patio in the summer, and cosy fireside dining in cooler weather. Something about this tiny north-facing area of the region seems to make great Pinot Noir.

Hard roe To Hoe Vineyards On the other side of the lake we discovered Hard Roe to Hoe Vineyards. Celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of a man who rowed miners across the lake to a brothel in the 1930s, this winery seemed a bit too gimmicky on the surface to be any good. The bubbly, pretty and knowledgeable young woman behind the tasting counter soon washed away that notion by pouring a ridiculously good Rosé called “Shameless Hussy.” She delighted in showing us the gold medal this wine won at the Finger Lakes Awards in 2014. Their Estate Cabernet Franc 2013 scored 91 points in Wine Spectator, and their “Nauti Buoy” red was one of their several gold medal winners at the Washington Wine Awards. This is a winery that taught me not to judge a wine by its label.

We will return to Washington at some point to visit the more well-known wine regions, but for wine lovers and adventurers alike, Lake Chelan offers immense diversity, food, outdoor activities and great wine, all wrapped in a package of incredible scenery. It’s well worth getting off the beaten wine path.

The New Amphibious Vehicles:

hen you think of amphibious vehicles like, for example, hovercrafts, The Jetsons theme song may play in the back of your mind alongside a futuristic blinking sound. However, while George Jetson’s amphibious vehicle can fly through space, the ones currently being developed and used are a little more down to earth. American inventor Oliver Evans developed the first known self-propelled amphibious vehicle called the Orukter Amphibolos in 1805 — although it’s since been disputed whether it successfully travelled over land and water under its own steam. Fast-forward more than 200 years and there’s not much to be disputed now. Amphibious bicycles, ATVs, cars, buses, trucks, military vehicles and hovercrafts

can be seen cruising through deserts, gliding over lakes and sometimes even submerging under water.

doing,” says March. “No one has been very successful in the past, but once we started, people were really receptive to it.”

One of the most successful forays into the development of amphibious vehicles is California-based WaterCar, which established itself as a company to watch in 1999 for developing and marketing amphibious vehicles. “Growing up in southern California I was always involved in this kind of industry,” says WaterCar founder, Dave March. “We looked at the Second World War amphibious vehicles, which were real slow and realized we could do something better. We saw an opportunity.”

March says when they began developing their first model, millionaires from around the world continuously approached WaterCar looking to purchase their own amphibious vehicle. March has even taken a deposit from the Prince of Dubai. “We became overwhelmed by the reception,” he says. “We were doing it more for fun than anything else.”

For March, what started out as a personal challenge to build the world’s fastest amphibious vehicle, turned into a successful and exciting career. “We weren’t really sure whether people would be interested in what we were

However, March stresses that attaining a level of reliability and maintainability that was consistent with WaterCar’s standards and those of its prospective buyers was of the utmost priority. “Our team was adamant that we wouldn’t sell a product that we wouldn’t purchase ourselves,” says March.

After 14 years filled with successes and failures, it was in 2013 that the amphibious model, Panther, achieved the quality, reliability and maintainability March was looking for. “Each Panther is a custom-built vehicle,” says March. In January 2010, March broke the Guinness amphibious speed record with WaterCar’s Python model. “I was driving,” recalls March, “and I was both excited and concerned because no one had ever gone

that fast. We used a tremendous amount of caution.” March says the Python model reached speeds from 150 to 200 mph and looking back, he says, “I eventually became comfortable with the high speeds because once you get out there, it’s really cool. I can’t express what it’s like every time you drive one of these models.” WaterCar broke new ground when it came to developing amphibious vehicles. It boasts a dozen different models that

can go off-road, above water and even cruise down the highway. Models like the Turnkey Minus, which is a Panther package and includes everything you need to cover for land and water, is one of those vehicles. According to WaterCar’s website, all one has to supply is a new, rebuilt or a used Honda 3.5 or 3.7 V-TEC Engine and a 091 VW bus Transmission, along with your choice of custom paint and design. March says companies often reach out to WaterCar to market their brands in a

unique way to pique consumers’ interest. “It’s definitely unusual, but it’s a great marketing piece of interest.”

to break the Guinness record, reaches speeds of up to 60 mph in the water with a Dominator Jet and Corvette engine.

While the military has used amphibious vehicles for years, it’s become more of a fun and exciting luxury novelty for those closer to a large mass of water. “Our models can keep up with other boats in the water,” says March. “You can even go water-skiing.” WaterCar’s Python model (a price tag of $200,000) used

March says he was surprised by the various ways clients used their models. “It’s been used in many ways we hadn’t even envisioned,” he says. “It’s very convenient for people who have an island and use it to travel to and from, as well as on land.” Many clients also carry the models on

their yachts when they encounter ports with restricted access. For those looking into purchasing an amphibious vehicle, the Panther is currently offered in three states of completion: Rolling Chassis, Turnkey Minus and Complete Custom. However, please note, the Complete Custom version may be a challenge or impossible to license and register for street use in some states or provinces. Float Your Boat...

aptain Zack Green, owner of Mahone Marine, is passionate about boating. For years, he spent his life on the open waters. Starting out as a deckhand, he worked his way up to become the captain of a $20 million luxury super yacht. After sailing the seas for 22 years, Green decided it was time to settle down, and he and his wife Jennifer couldn’t think of anywhere in the world where they would rather raise a family than back in Nova Scotia, where he had grown up. Returning to Mahone Bay, the experienced boatman was often sought out for his

knowledge and expertise regarding a wide variety of boating matters, from questions about repairs to advice on choosing a boat. “In 2011, friends, neighbours and others in my community were asking me if I knew where to find quality used boats,” explains Green. “I soon realized that people in the Maritimes were looking for the value of pre-owned boats that have been serviced and were ready to go on the water to be enjoyed.” The Greens decided they would help people with their boating needs fulltime and opened Mahone Marine three years ago. “My favourite part of my job is finding the right boat to fit my customers’

lifestyles,” says Green. “There are so many different types of boats available now, making it difficult for people to choose the one that’s right for them and their family.” Mahone Marine also carries a wide array of brands from leading manufacturers, including EdgeWater, Robalo and Chaparral, as well as others. Each line was chosen for its unique combination of style and performance. “Edgewater was our first line of new boats and we were so excited to stock them,” says Green. “They have some of the industry’s most respected engineers, naval architects and

marine designers and this can be seen in their highly superior product.” The service department at Mahone Marine is second to none. “We are an authorized Yamaha and Mercury Mercruiser parts and services dealer, but we also provide year-round service for all makes and models of outboards and inboards at our facility, or our mobile mechanic can travel to where needed,” says Green. “It’s very important to me that our customers are completely satisfied and totally comfortable that their boat will operate properly. Our technicians are factory-trained and have lifetimes of mechanical experience, so I feel confident when sending them out on jobs.” From fibreglass repairs to customized detailing and everything in between, they are there to help get you back in the water seven days a week throughout the summer. Mahone Marine even offers a concierge

service, whereby they will deliver your boat to your door or dock fully ready to use and will pick it up at the end of the season, winterize and store it. Their facility between Highways 103 and 3 is located only minutes from the boat ramp at Mahone Bay. Zack and Jennifer have stocked Mahone Marine with all the products and services needed to get you, your family and friends out on the water for summer days filled with fun and laughter. BRIDGE OF THE

AMERICAS By Ken Beattie, NPD, Ph.D., Enrichment Speaker Photos courtesy Oceania Cruises

T

he weather encountered during a Canadian January is often less than balmy! Indeed, this may be why so many Canadians are found aboard cruise ships sailing exotic lands, enjoying the warm weather of the tropics. I for one will be soaking up the sun from Jan. 16 to Feb. 3, 2015 aboard yet another exotic adventure with Oceania Cruise Line’s beautiful Regatta.

As the enrichment lecturer aboard, my responsibility is to enhance the already spectacular 18-day itinerary with itineraryspecific regular presentations, related to plants and peoples of the regions we visit. This voyage originates in Miami and meanders along the coast of Central America to the famed Panama Canal through which we have a daylight transit — spectacular! Roughly halfway through the itinerary, we will sail along the Pacific coast of Ecuador for several days until we reach neighbouring Peru. Docking in Lima for two days allows for an expedition to the famed site of Machu Pichu. Oceania regularly offers itineraries that include airfare as well as many of the “a la carte” options one would pay extra for on other lines. One example is dining options in the specialty restaurants, Toscana and the Polo Grill, requiring only a reservation and no additional fee. Actually, on a previous cruise we received a note from the concierge with reservations already made for us as we just hadn’t had time to make them ourselves. The Toscana experience was exemplary but not over-the-top fancy. We felt extremely welcome and very comfortable dressed in country club casual attire — no tie for me and most men weren’t wearing jackets. If you like to dress a bit more “uptown,” that is perfectly fine too, and you do see some passengers who indeed dress up. I often slide a jacket on simply because it hides a multitude of sins (and my tummy) after several days of cruise food. On occasion, we are invited to a “Captain’s Reception” and we do dress appropriately, including a tie and jacket for me and a dressy outfit for my wife. This affair typically happens once on an itinerary — very impressive events indeed.

Oceania is very much a family, and that attitude and respect comes across in everything a guest experiences, including special functions with senior officers. Recently, on an Amazon expedition, the cruise director made a point of chatting with every individual sitting on the pool deck and addressed most by first name. This level of dedication and incredible customer service is a hallmark of Oceania and not to be underestimated. Never have I felt any crew member was just being courteous out of obligation; their approach was always genuine. This sincerity was not applied specifically to me because of my position as speaker; it was standard and consistently remarked on by others. As a matter of fact, on our Amazon expedition more than 60 per cent of the passengers were repeat guests — that speaks volumes. Ask anyone who has sailed Oceania, and I suspect the response will be similar. This itinerary aboard the beautifully refurbished Regatta is very popular; actually many categories are wait-listed. Mid-sized vessels (680 guests), tremendous guest services, the best food at sea, and a very interesting lecture series makes Oceania’s Regatta and this journey an absolute delight. I invite you to review the cruise and come along for the time of your life — no regrets. In the event your specific category is sold out, as they do rapidly, you might consider joining me in October 2015 on a grand journey from Istanbul to Dubai. This itinerary is 21 days and offers fantastic rates including airfare. Sailing aboard the sister ship Nautica, we sweep our way through the most eastern regions of the Mediterranean, visiting Israel, passing through the Suez Canal, the great land of Egypt, sail the Red Sea and arrive in Dubai Oct. 25, 2015. A lecture series is in development for this fascinating part of the world as well as our extended voyage to India, the Seychelles, Madagascar and South Africa. Plan, dream, save and then come play with us as we traipse the world in search of new and wonderful experiences; disappointment is not an option! Mooseheads L e a r n i n g to r e b o u n d By Trina Annand Photos David Chan

I

t’s been a rocky road so far this year for the largely rookie Halifax Mooseheads. Seemingly unable to get a winning streak going of more than a couple games, the 2014/2015 season looks to be more of a developmental year for the team. Coach Dominique Ducharme is taking his long game approach, focusing on overall improvement game after game. “We have a young team. Every game we play, every hour we practice, they’re learning more and getting better. Hockey isn’t just physical; it’s a mental game as well. When you get over excited or disheartened it can drain you physically.”

72

FineLifestyles

Halifax

This rough season has not dampened the enthusiasm of fans. All of the Mooseheads home games have been well attended, with an average of more than 7,000 — second only in attendance to the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) standings — numbers that will surely grow as the season progresses. Now ranked 14th overall in the QMJHL, the team has had more than their fair share of injuries. Early in the season Jessie Lussier was out with a broken wrist and Cavan Fitzgerald was sidelined with a broken kneecap. During this year’s Battle of Nova Scotia against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, several Mooseheads

players were involved in stunning collisions and when the two game series was done, two players were off the ice. Captain Ryan Falkenham is out of the game for six to eight weeks with a lower body injury, a blow after his hip troubles from last season. Alternates Nikolaj Ehlers and Austyn Hardie, along with the rest of the team, will need to pick up the slack. Centre Brett Crossley was the victim of a dirty hit from Pierre-Luc Dubois — who was suspended indefinitely for elbowing a player in the head. As a result of the collision, Crossley has been benched with a concussion. With so many shuffles in the lineup, it’s hard to get a consistent performance whether a team is full of veterans or rookies.

SHUT THE

FRONT DOOR An Eye-Catching Entrance to Your Home

O

By Erin Legg

ne of the most important elements of a home’s curb appeal is the visual impact of the front door. This is the where the “welcome” extended to friends and family begins, and where homeowners can truly

make a design statement. Choosing a style of door is a big decision. Most importantly, homeowners should select a front door that matches the architectural style of the home. Here are some popular house styles and the corresponding door styles that complement the design genre.

Victorian: The appreciation homeowners have for this style lies in its ornate decorative touches. The architectural detail found in the scrollwork, trusses and arches resonate a luxurious vibe, and the style of door is no different. Often, Victorian houses have panelled doors with window insets, and are usually a dark, elegant colour. Either a single or a double door entrance is well suited, given the space. Modern: These minimalist, sleek homes are designed with a “less is more” philosophy. Known for simplicity (not to be confused with “boring”), doors tend to be a slab style, which may or may not be accented with window panels. Glass is often

FineLifestyles

Halifax

73

74

FineLifestyles

Halifax

used throughout the interior of this contemporary design, so we sometimes see entire glass doors on modern houses. Colonial: This European-inspired home, known for its geometric symmetry, typically features raised-panel wood doors. The doors themselves are either a natural wood finish, or painted to add a pop of colour. Narrow sidelights and transom windows work well with this style of home, and all trims are decorative. Bungalow: Homeowners are naturally drawn to the cosiness that comes from a bungalow, and the door is the first invitation to come on in. Typically, doors are flat panelled with simple casings. Depending on the exterior style of the home, the door can be painted or left as a wood finish. Glass, quite common in bungalow doors, is rectangular in shape. While the aesthetic function of your front door is to make a good first impression to your guests, its practical function is to withstand natural elements. Between the sun, wind, rain, snow and extreme temperature fluctuations, we demand a lot from our doors. Wood is a material known for its beauty

and versatility. For doors to be left with a natural wood appearance, oak, cherry maple, walnut or mahogany are the top choices. Paintable wood doors are best made from softer woods, such as pine or hemlock. Solid wood doors are exquisite additions for your home, though they demand upkeep to ensure natural expansion and contraction don’t do damage. An option some homeowners take advantage of is wood veneered doors that are less susceptible to warping. The durability of steel makes it a top choice for homeowners. However, don’t classify this material as too drab for your front door. Best when painted, steel doors will not warp, crack or twist over time. They have a higher R-value than wood doors because of the insulting foam in their core. Steel doors are also available in high-end finishes, such as a stainable, laminated wood veneer. Aluminium is another hardy material for your front door, as it has a baked-on finish that will never rust or require repainting. If you want the wood look but are steering clear of a true wood product, opt for a fibreglass door. It can be easily replicated to look like real wood, although it will need re-staining every few years.

Bold, vibrant colours give style and elicit a “welcome” to visitors. While individuality and artistic expression should be practised, there are basic guidelines to keep in mind when choosing a colour for your front door. When faced with narrowing down your top colour choices, opt for a complementary colour that plays off your home’s exterior. Another easy option is to select a natural shade, as they tend to go with almost every colour imaginable. When truly stuck for a colour inspiration, pick up a hue you’ve already established in the yard or with front porch accessories. Never underestimate the power of accessories. Symmetrical placements, such as lighting or potted plants, go well with any architectural style. Don’t shy away from embellishments or mouldings: these can be added strategically to update a door. If you prefer more artistic additions, why not consider custom ironwork that still allows light to enter the door’s window, but adds an extra layer of security as well? If there is no porch or covering of your entranceway, your door can be accented with a pergola (best with a bungalow) or even a copper canopy (against a classic brick Colonial).

hen people buy from Amos Wood, they do so for a variety of reasons. Some want to identify with the wood origin or species, or the people making their products. Others come for unique custom-made products they can’t get anywhere else. But all Amos Wood clients receive the same high standard of service and material, whether they are buying flooring, fireplace mantels or custom-made furniture. The company offers unfinished solid wood floors in widths of five to 11-inches. Industrially supplied flooring generally ranges from two-and-a-quarter inch widths to four-and-a-quarter inches. Flooring lengths at Amos Wood can run from eight to 12-feet. “Our prices reflect the quality of the stock,” says owner Jeff Amos. “They cost more than industrially-supplied solid wood, but the wider and longer board floors have a whole different feel to them.” The flooring comes in a beautiful range of woods. In softwood, tamarack, clear red spruce, clear Eastern hemlock and knotty pine are available. In hardwood, white ash, red and hard maple, yellow birch, red and white oak, black cherry, black walnut and tulip wood can all be made into flooring. Many of these woods are Acadian Forest

All of these species can also be used to make handsome fireplace mantels of a variety of thicknesses and widths. “We can make all possible styles of mantels,” says Amos. “These can include various crown mouldings and detailing with support columns because of our company’s moulding capabilities as well.” Amos Wood uses everything from eightby-eight hand-hewn barn beams to liveedge figured woods, including spalted maple as well as bird’s eye and curly torrefied (heat treated) birch, which can all offer unique visuals. Whether your home décor is contemporary, traditional, modern, rustic or country, the staff at Amos Wood will be able to help you find the wood that meets your needs and style. Their goal is to present a variety of woods, colour hues, thicknesses and widths in their showrooms that help their clients find what feels right to them. “Our clients bring their own esthetic sense,” says Amos. “When they come to our showroom, we can show them the variety of stock and the possibilities. This helps them get a real feel for what they have in mind.” The staff at Amos Wood welcomes all visitors to their showroom to see the range of possibility in their world of wood. The Dream Maker

Designing Homes to Fit Your Land and Lifestyle By Courtney Tait

D

uring Atlantic Home Design’s first year of business, in 1984, owner and design consultant John Hattie grew the company from 15 projects to 85, impressing clients with the custom home plans he created literally in front of their eyes. Thirty years later, John continues to be one of Nova Scotia’s most successful home designers. A leader of innovative design that prioritizes quality of lifestyle and the correlation between land and home, John has won multiple home design awards, and his designs can be found throughout the province and beyond. “I’m a dream maker,” he says. “I take people’s dreams

and make them come true in their homes. When you see the smile on their faces, you know you’ve hit gold.” Prior to starting Atlantic Home Designs, John worked as an architectural draftsman with Colonial Homes, which specialized in pre-fabricated homes. While he gained design experience with the company, he felt restricted by the limitations its system posed, with no consideration given to the features of the land on which the homes were built. When he launched Atlantic Home Designs, John aimed to fill a niche between the draftsmen and architecture

roles in the industry, with the design process starting not with the home, but with the land. “At the time, nobody was designing to the land,” he says. “I looked at the lot, the slope, the trees, and created the house to fit the land.” This approach has been the foundation of John’s design process for the last 30 years. The result? Exceptional homes and renovations ranging from traditional to contemporary styles, built with the properties’ restrictions and features in mind, such as views and the direction of sun. While most designers formulate a concept after discussing ideas with

the elements, and I make them aware of aspects such as traffic flow and light. The custom design process is very rewarding if you are working with a good designer, because the house will work for you, enhancing your livability and excitement of your home.” John’s design flexibility and emphasis on catering to his clients’ needs have resulted in innovative features in his homes, such as a 2.5 storey interior courtyard. “The client told me they always wanted an interior courtyard, but everyone else had said you can’t have them in this climate. I said, ‘If you do it right, there’s no reason you can’t.’ That first winter, they had a 17foot high Christmas tree.”

their clients — typically showing them drawings at a later date — John does sketches during the design discussion, in front of his clients. This enables him to respond immediately to the clients’ visual and verbal feedback, asking questions, clarifying needs, and making adjustments on the spot. “The whole time we work together is a collaboration,” says John. “I can watch their faces and listen to

remarks. I design to the twinkles in eyes and grins on faces.”

Once John’s sketches are complete, one of the company’s draftsmen draws the final plans, which are then ready for the quotation process and permit approval system. Clients choose their own builder, who constructs the dream home John designed.

For clients trying to visualize their future home, seeing sketches as they’re being created allows them to jump in with questions, concerns and ideas as they come to mind, without feeling hesitant to make changes. “I am very good at listening to the needs and requirements of my clients,” says John. “We discuss all

Wendy and Harley MacCaull, who have worked with John on several projects over the last decade, say he is not only a great designer, but is current on the latest materials and building technologies. “John is a pleasure to work with,” say the MacCaulls. “He is creative, patient, has a great sense of humor, and listens to our

ideas and works them in or finds an even better alternative. We are proud to have a John Hattie designed home.” One of the first designers in Nova Scotia to incorporate insulated concrete form (ICF) technology into his home designs, John prides himself on being open to trying new products. Atlantic Home Designs offers energy efficient options and is well versed in the use of passive solar, which John refers to as “chasing the sun.” John was the founding president of Nova Scotia Home and Building Designer’s Association, through which he continues to educate members on current products and construction techniques. “As a designer I stay very current within our association, which is based on education and more education,” says John. Well known in the industry, John has formed relationships with contractors, builders, and other experts who appreciate the extensive knowledge that goes into his detailed home plans. Brian Mourre, a general contractor who has done business with John for more than 20 years, says he has recommended him to clients many times. “This has worked in my favour because they are happy to work with him and pleased with the end product,” says Mourre. “I have never been disappointed in his product, and his attention to detail is impressive.” Twelve of John’s homes have won awards, presented by Natural Resources Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Home Awards, and Nova Scotia Home and Building Designers Association. But John says for him the biggest reward is visiting his clients at their home after its been built, and hearing how excited they are about living in it. “I want people to be ecstatic about their homes,” says John. “I had a client from 28 years ago come up to me at a home show, and she said, ‘John, we still love our home. People who come over for the first time still say, ‘wow.’’ That’s the success I’m looking for with my clients. I want them to say ‘wow,’ not just for one or two years, but for 30 years.” RIGHT John Hattie, owner Photo Bruce Jollimore

Launching the Luxurious 2015 Lexus NX:

A STEP ABOVE THE REST By Tobie Hainstock

“I

t’s unlike any other SUV in its category,” says Doug Herbert, product specialist for Lexus College. He’s talking about the thrilling 2015 Lexus NX. With a more cutting-edge design and exciting new performance technology, the 2015 NX has been created with a more youthful appeal than its predecessors. According to Herbert, the design of the 2015 NX originated with the power of

performance vehicles. “The 2015 NX unites the engineering input of racers with the sophistication and class of Lexus luxury,” he continues.

Because of the kick-down function of the new transmission, the hybrid offers the powerful thrill that drivers have come to expect from other Lexus vehicles.

The 2015 NX is available in two aweinspiring models, the NX 200t with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and the NX 300h hybrid. This now means that Lexus offers six hybrid vehicles to choose from; that’s more than any other luxury brand to date.

Is venturing into unexpected weather a possibility for you? Both NX models offer their own version of pro-active all-weather drive (AWD). Just seeing the Lexus NX is a pleasurable experience. The excitement in Herbert’s

voice is unmistakeable as he describes the look of this edgy compact SUV. “The designers wanted something that would ‘pop’ and the NX definitely turns heads,” he says. While still upholding the Lexus tradition of impeccable quality, the Lexus NX features a sportier design that’s not only aerodynamic but very pleasing to the eye.

The Lexus NX was designed in Japan by the team of innovative designers Takkakaw Kato, Keiichi Nishiyama, Hiroshi Inoue and Sunao Ichihara. The team has a history of racing and advanced automotive design with Lexus. Together they focused on optimal performance while targeting fuel efficiency. As a result the new 2015 Lexus NX features a number of Lexus ‘firsts’ which include:

ucked away in what looks like a Dartmouth warehouse, Carson Exports holds some surprises for car aficionados. “Most people have no idea there are cars in this building,” says owner Carson Way. “At first, customers come in and they ask where the cars are. Then, when they’re taken to the showroom, they see cars they’ve only seen in magazines or on television, and they get excited and start taking photos. There have been some great reactions.” At the time of Fine Lifestyle’s interview, Carson Exports had a number of exciting models in the 7,000-sq.-ft. showroom, including a Mercedes SL63 — the only one like it for sale in Canada. There were also two Nissan GTR sports cars, one from 2014 and one from 2009. “They’re extremely rare and perform like a Ferrari or Lamborghini,” says Way. While those special vehicles are considered exotics, Carson Exports also has a wide range of high-end vehicles, such as BMWs, Mercedes, sports cars, pick-up trucks and imports from Japan, which it will sell locally or export abroad. Approximately 40 to 50 cars are kept in the indoor showroom and a number of cars are on display outside as well. At night, as many cars as possible are moved indoors. The indoor showroom was more of a storage facility when the company began in 2003.

At this time, the company was focusing on exports to dealers in Sweden, China and other worldwide destinations. “We were just looking for a place that was fairly low-key because a lot of the cars we export are very high end,” says Way. “A lot of which can’t be left outdoors on a traditional lot. Some vehicles sit for a couple of weeks before they leave the country, and people would want to look at them.” As people discovered the cars moving through the area, they began to ask Way where he got them and if he could help them find similar vehicles. Since 2008, Carson Exports has been selling vehicles locally and now offers the same warranties and financing from all major banks found at any car other dealership. Their showroom has just undergone a major overhaul that includes new epoxy-based flooring, lighting, and walls to make the area even more inviting to customers. “We’re the only indoor car buying experience around that I’m aware of,” says Way. “There are other showrooms, but not like ours. There are a lot of dealerships in Ontario that are 90 per cent indoors like ours, but we’re unique in that respect in Nova Scotia.” The boutique car dealership offers a different experience to clients, “without any corny sales tactics to buy,” says Way. His staff of 15 — including sales, service and detail — is very passionate about Carson Exports and about the industry. Way says, “I’ve got a really good team of people who want happy customers.” Customer Andrew Kaulbach says, “There’s an awesome group of people at Carson Exports; and lots of beautiful cars and trucks to choose from. Carson Way and Ken Eastman are great to deal with. I’ve now bought two cars from them and both times the experience was great. I will continue to go to Carson Exports whenever I need a vehicle.” Ways says one reason for their success is they do a lot of market research and price aggressively. “Some of our inventory might only have three comparables in the Maritimes,” he says. “Generally, we try to be the absolute lowest — based on price for niche market vehicles and cars that are difficult to find.” Helping people drive away smiling, in a vehicle

they have dreamt about for years, is one of the most fulfilling aspects of Way’s job. The other is handling some of his own dream cars. “One of the first cars I sold was a ’62 Chevy Corvette,” says Way, who was 19 years old at the time. “I was nervous as hell and shaking when I drove it, but it was a big thrill. Now, we’ve gone through a number of high-end cars, but every now and again, there’ll be a car that still gets me going.”

and began again. When Carson was old enough to work, his father was in semi-retirement but still dabbling in car sales and exports. He said, “Why don’t you try selling some cars with me?” By 2003, Carson Exports had opened in Dartmouth. Jack signed the business over to his son in 2007.

Way comes by his love of cars honestly. His father, Jack Way, began selling cars when he was just 16. By age 19, he owned a Studebaker franchise dealership on Main Street. After Studebaker folded, he spent time selling cars in Los Angeles before opening a successful dealership in Toronto, which he later sold. In 1987, he moved his family back to Dartmouth

Way is now using the success of the business to support a cause his family cares about deeply. The Carson Exports Walk for Autism, which supports Autism Nova Scotia, will be held June 13, 2015 in nine cities and towns across Nova Scotia. “So much of the work Autism Nova Scotia does goes unnoticed,” says Way. “My six-year-old son has benefitted from many programs.

“Dad worked here until the day he died of lung cancer in 2012,” says Way. “It’s really a family business.”

Unfortunately, many of these systems are highly complex with numerous different categories thereby canceling out their usefulness. The Colors System was developed by a California junior high teacher for his students. It has only four personality types or Colors (Blue, Gold, Green and Orange) and is easy to learn and employ in everyday life.

Blue are people who are guided by their emotions and intuition. They are generally very compassionate and empathetic. They love to talk and when they ask you how you are feeling, they really want to know. Blue employees are creative, flexible and need to be part of a team. If a Blue employee feels that they are making a difference through the work they are doing, they will feel successful, work harder and remain with that company. Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Ray are two well-known Blues.

Golds: the Organizers Golds love order. They like to-do lists, plans, systems, procedures and routines. Their workspace and home are very neat and orderly. Golds can often be found in administrative and leadership positions. Notes Boelcke, “Golds are very efficient and skilled time-management experts who work accurately and with a singleminded focus towards deadlines and completion of tasks.” Golds are not multitaskers but prefer to do one thing at a time. Two well-known Golds are Suze Orman and Michelle Obama.

Oranges: the Energetic Go-Getters Oranges are people who make quick decisions and prefer to figure things out as they go along rather than plan things in advance. Great networkers, Oranges see the big picture and do not get bogged down in the details. They make

Greens may not speak much but when they do say something it is often very insightful and well thought out. As employees, Greens generally do a very thorough job. ake some time this winter to discover Downtown Truro’s favourite shops at Inglis Place, where merchants like Stanfields, one of the oldest companies in the Maritimes, has been doing business for more than 100 years.

Although there have been many changes since the Stanfields staked their claim, this historical venue has not lost its charm or viability. With a number of fashion boutiques for men and women, top-of-the-line sports equipment and outdoor wear for the whole family, and decadent body and bath products, Inglis Place has a multitude of gift ideas for the holiday season. Inglis Jewellers co-owners Paul Clark and Greg Johnston invested in the former Margolians building along with other local business people because they wanted downtown Truro to continue to thrive. “People come here because it’s a unique shopping experience,” says Clark. “We’ve got a small town feel with brand names at competitive pricing. Inglis Place is the strongest downtown core in Atlantic Canada and it’s a perfect example of how local entrepreneurs can combine their efforts for the greater good.” Just an hour away from Halifax, Inglis Place might give you the best shopping experience you’ve ever had! DEVOURING the Best of Nova Scotia and the World Through Film and Food By Trina Annand Photos David Elliott

Food has always been an integral part of the Maritime experience. Nowhere is this truer than Nova Scotia, the setting for the world’s largest food and film festival — Devour! Providing the optimal blend of creative minds, agricultural and oceanic produce, the province has quickly placed itself on the culinary map with celebrity chef visitors like Chuck Hughes and Anthony Bourdain.

“W

e are delighted with the international calibre of our visiting delegates, industry heavyweights as well as the international and Canadian chefs that attended our event,” says Michael Howell, executive director of Devour! From its humble beginnings as a retro film festival in 2009, the event has grown into a star-studded affair that turns the bucolic setting of Wolfville into a buzzing metropolis for foodies and the culinary-inclined. Featuring a mix of food films, great meals and workshops, Devour! has carefully cultivated their recipe for success. “We are really lucky to live in the kind of place that attracts talented people to make their home. We have a unique blend of land and sea, chefs, producers and farmers that creates greatness, and our programming reflects it,” says Lia Rinaldo, managing director. Sifting through 200 films, the Devour! team curated 55 new food and wine films for festival goers to enjoy. “Food films are often seen as hard-hitting documentaries. At the festival, we want to educate but also enlighten and entertain people,” says Rinaldo. As part of the first annual celebrity curated movie, Anthony Bourdain showed filmgoers his favourite food film, Ang

Lee’s Eat Drink Man Woman. During the evening, Bourdain even tried the famous Nova Scotian delicacy — donair. In another uniquely Nova Scotian tradition, the gastronomical explorer also became a Member of the Order of Good Cheer. Each year at Devour!, films are handselected and paired with a meal inspired by it — themes, colours, ingredients come to life in the hands of local and guest chefs. This year, chef Dave Smart of Wolfville’s Front and Central restaurant created a feast based on the Spanish film El Somni. Well known for his unique creations, such as boneless rack of lamb, Smart believes creativity is fundamental to the culinary experience. “With my background in

mechanical engineering I love the technical challenge of cooking; of finding new ways to cook or present a meal. My relationship with food is to push or challenge it.” Smart’s creations often have a layered approach with a variety of cooking methods to create a completely new experience for his diners. “I’m not about delivering calories; I deliver an experience. Something Devour! knows all about.” Devour! also offered a wide array of workshops from food photography and cooking demonstrations to boosting a business’ media presence and producing food television. Hosting the Rabbit Nose-toTail Workshop, chef Mark Gray of Brooklyn Warehouse took guests on a culinary journey with one of his favourite proteins. Gray’s love of food started at an early age in the kitchen with his grandmother. For the chef, the true beauty of food is how it touches people and creates interconnectivity. “Food brings people together. No matter what is going on in the

world or your family, everyone needs to eat and we eat together. Food creates a stronger sense of family and community,” says Gray. “Food and film are a very dynamic combination, there is so much to see and experience. We want to make great food and films accessible to everyone. It’s important for us all to step back and look at what we are eating and where it comes from,” says Rinaldo. Devour! reminds attendees that great food is not simply about price, but the quality of ingredients, creativity and love poured into each and every meal. The annual food film festival is not simply about expressing a love of food or film, but a love of the Maritimes — making it a must-visit destination and showing the world what the area’s great creative minds can do. Devour! The Food Film Fest was held Nov. 1216 in Wolfville.

ucked into a pretty, tree-lined corner in the centre of Kentville, is the longest operating laser clinic in the Annapolis Valley. When you walk into Light Touch Laser you get the feeling right away that it’s a special place. There is happy chatter among the clients and staff, sharing their successes and exchanging ideas about everything from Ideal Protein recipes to their favourite Dermalogica product. There is an immediate sense of community and friendship. The modern décor, with touches of glass and chrome, is a sparkly reminder that this is not your usual ‘Zen spa.’ Owner

Carrie Yeo describes the services at Light Touch as “all business” and emphasises every service offered has been chosen specifically based on its high standard of effectiveness and lasting results. “Light Touch is a place where people come to feel good — but not just for an afternoon. They come to make changes that will have a long term impact on their lives,” says Carrie. Twelve years ago, Light Touch Laser began as a clinic offering laser hair removal exclusively. Carrie’s mandate was to build relationships with clients and become the best laser hair removal clinic in the area. All anyone has to do is talk to

her clients to see she has achieved just that! Over time, as new developments in skin and body care have come on the market, Carrie has expanded her services and staff, and is proud to be celebrating the one year anniversary of her second location in Greenwood. Carrie describes the primary directive at Light Touch as helping people get control of things that are holding them back from being their best selves. “We help our clients overcome obstacles and be confident. Confidence is everything.” Addressing the most prevalent physical issues, one might say Light Touch deals with all things unwanted, including hair,

weight, lines and wrinkles, blemishes, skin laxity in areas of the face and body, and signs of aging. Carrie and her staff get a great deal of satisfaction out of offering clients what they call “real solutions.” “The team and I get to tell clients about how laser hair removal and Ideal Protein (weight loss program) have changed our own lives; and how caring for your skin and finding just the right skincare makes life easier. Most of all, we get to help them achieve these same results themselves. People do not have time or money to waste on anything that doesn’t work.” The philosophy of Light Touch seems to be different than one might expect. What they help their clients achieve is not about conforming to the public’s idea of cookiecutter beauty. The emphasis is on self-care. When asked which is her favourite service, Carrie replies without hesitation. “It is never about the treatment for the outside. It’s about the change it creates on the inside. When any living thing is cared for, it grows. Helping our clients grow and transform is definitely my favourite service.” Light Touch Laser 50 A Webster Street, Kentville 902. 678.2829 kentville@lighttouch.ca 780 Central Avenue, Greenwood 902.765.2639 greenwood@lighttouch.ca www.lighttouch.ca

How to “Winterize” Your Vehicle

What aspects of the winter weather can be dangerous for your vehicle, and how does maintaining it increase safety?

T

he winter season can be hard on our four-wheeled machines. This year, get ahead of the game by winterizing your vehicle before the cold temperatures set in. As you will see in the tips below, winter maintenance makes your car safer, run more smoothly, and will likely prevent any snowy roadside breakdowns. What are the benefits of maintaining your vehicle in winter? One of the biggest benefits of maintaining your vehicle for winter is convenience. Ever break down in jaw-freezing temperatures and have to wait for a tow? No fun. Better to fix any issues your car may have now.

Cold temperatures wreak havoc on undercharged batteries, so it’s important to get them checked ahead of time. A battery that started your car in the summer may not do the job in the winter, and the colder the weather the more power is needed to start your vehicle. What things should you look and listen for to know your vehicle needs winter maintenance? Tire pressures are very important as colder weather sets in. Tire pressure will drop in cold weather, and an underinflated tire can cause handling issues. Proper wipers and a full washer tank is a must! Keep your fuel tank full, and keep some basic supplies in your car: blanket, water, extra washer fluid, bag of sand... this will be helpful if you find yourself on the side of the road in a snowstorm.

blades, which are heavier and usually encased in rubber to prevent freezing. People should also use proper windshield washer fluid rated for cold temperatures. What do people often ignore in winter that is detrimental to their car? Cleaning off their vehicle. Clear the vehicle of snow and keep your glass surfaces clear and free of ice. Brush salt and debris off the headlights and tail lights — oncoming traffic will thank you. What are some misconceptions people have about winter vehicle maintenance? Not so much a misconception, but perhaps a preference. Winter tires versus all-season tires are a grey area for some. It’s been proven that winter tires have better traction and stopping ability on snow and in slush conditions. Proper inflation and alignment are crucial for optimal handling.

What are the main areas of a vehicle that typically require winter maintenance?

How can a service centre go above and beyond to ensure their customer’s vehicles are maintained well for winter?

There are several items that could be serviced before cold weather sets in: damaged or worn hoses, belts, water pumps and plug wires. Undercoating is important in high salt areas, as it slows oxidization, resulting in less rust. Winter tires are a must, as are winter wiper

Every service visit at Valley Ford this time of year includes a multi-point check. Coolant, battery, tires and wipers are all checked to ensure they are functioning well. Valley Ford also offers free alignment checks to ensure you are travelling straight, which will help in slippery winter conditions.

Winter in Windsor “Birthplace of Hockey”

H

ockey represents an inextricable part of Windsor’s heritage and culture. It was the writings of Windsor’s own Thomas Chandler Haliburton, generally regarded as the father of North American humour, that alluded to a form of hockey being played by King’s students in his book, Attache, which dealt in part with recollections of his days at the prestigious school. The passage from the Haliburton book is believed to be the earliest written reference to any form of ice hockey, and goes as follows: “the boys let out racin’, yelpin’, hollerin’ and whoopin’ like mad with pleasure... with games at base in the fields, or hurley on the long pond on the ice...” The students from King’s-Edgehill School today still play hockey at the Cradle of Hockey on the Dill family farm. There have been many re-enactments of games of hurley-on-ice, “back of the college woods” on the pond. The students at King’s still use the same path today their predecessors would have used some 200 years ago. TOP Windsor Hockey Heritage Museum, Haliburton House
