Sheriff looks forward to retirement By Jason Sethre

jason@fillmorecountyjournal.com

“My parents didn’t have a good opinion of college,” said Sheriff Daryl Jensen, who grew up in Clarks G r o v e , Minn. Daryl Jensen His father asked him, “What are you going to do when you grow up?” Daryl’s father owned a successful business that sold and repaired outdoor equipment like

lawnmowers and snowblowers. While none of his family had ever gone into law enforcement, he took in interest when getting acquainted with a neighbor who was a Freeborn County Deputy Sheriff. This neighbor, Tony Wayne, also talked about his job and spoke highly of it. So, back when he was in high school, he started doing ride-alongs with Tony, and he learned a lot. After graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1977, he earned an Associates Degree in Law Enforcement from 1977 to 1979. In August of 1979, he was

signed on to the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department under the Spring Valley contract. Initially, Daryl wasn’t sure if this was the right career for him, but another deputy told him to be patient. Daryl didn’t grow up in Fillmore County, so he didn’t know a lot of people and the first year was a little difficult to get acclimated. “Things change,” as the deputy said, and he was right. He met his wife Deanna, and they married in 1982 -now married for more than 32 years. Over the course of his career, Daryl reflects on a number of

great mentors. “My mom and dad had the biggest influence on me.” And, on the job, while Don Gudmundson was Sheriff, he learned how to best interact with people. “Gudmundson was good at interviewing and interogating. He got me into that.” In 1989, Gudmundson left the Fillmore County Sheriff’s position to become the Chief of Police for the Lakeville Police Department. At that time, Jim Connolly was appointed to be Sheriff by the Fillmore County Board. Connolly served as Sheriff until his retirement in 2005, at which

time Daryl was appointed to be the next Fillmore County Sheriff by the Fillmore County Board. Both previous Sheriff’s, Gudmundson and Connolly, served as great mentors for Daryl. Changes Over the course of Daryl Jensen’s 35-year career, he’s seen a lot of change. “The biggest difference is technology,” shared Daryl. The Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department got their first computer in 1988. And, Sheriff Jensen recalled his first squad car had a radio with two channels. Today, the radios allow

Chatfield hires deputy clerk

Juried High School Art Show opens January 10

By Karen Reisner At a special meeting of the Chatfield city council held on December 29, Nancy Timm was hired as the new deputy city clerk effective January 12, 2015. Councilor Ken Jacobson was absent. Former deputy clerk Mary Peterson resigned to take a position at Mayo Clinic about a month ago after 18 years of service with the city. An internal posting to fill the position was made. Timm, currently a city employee in an EMS support position, applied for the job. City clerk Joel Young said city staff and the personnel committee recommended hiring Timm. The council approved the hire.

Lanesboro Arts will present the Annual Juried High School Art Show, showcasing work by 9-12th grade students from Chatfield, Fillmore Central, Lanesboro, and Rushford-Peterson High Schools. The show opens with a reception on Saturday, January 10 from 6-8 p.m., which is a good chance to meet student artists and teachers from these schools. The show runs through January 31, 2015. Always free and open to the public, winter

Other business on brief •The council approved an agreement with Smith, Schafer and Associates, LTD., certified public accountants, to complete the audit for the year ending December 31, 2014. The cost to the city will be $18,150, which is about a 3 percent increase from the prior year. Smith, Schafer has been doing Chatfield’s audit for about five years. •Paul and Kim Novotny requested a property conveyance to combine 544 Hillside Drive SE and outlot A into one parcel, where they intend to build a home. Young explained the request had not went through Planning and Zoning because it was not necessary in a case like this. The council could approve, reject, or ask for more information about the request. Outlot A has no current street access. Young said that he and Kristi Clarke recommend approval. The conveyance was approved. Councilor Paul Novotny abstained. •A bingo license was approved for St. Mary’s Catholic Church for four dates during 2015, including January 24.

gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in January. The show features a variety of art projects, including those in ceramics, acrylics, pastels, ink, pencil, and mixed media sculpture. immediate access to 20 channels, and upwards of 150 channels if needed. When asked about how the laws have changed, for better or for worse, Daryl said, “Some of the laws have become better.” “And, the video keeps you accountable and professional,” added Daryl. In Sheriff Jensen’s opinion, all of the technology has made officers better at what they do. “The only bad part about it is the expense,” said Daryl. It costs a lot of money, especially when you get into video storage. Highlights Daryl understands that what they do at the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department affects a lot of people. He reflected on the highlights of his career, and here’s what he recalled as most memorable. •Working together in response to the 2007 Rushford flood. •A young girl was walking home from school when she was sexually assaulted by someone not from this area. About six to seven months later, Daryl got a lead. He drove down to Iowa where the suspect lived and worked, and the offender confessed. Daryl couldn’t wait to get back and call the mother to let her know that there was a lead in the case. He wanted to bring this man to justice, and the guy ended up going to prison. •The Lanesboro fire in 2002. •The Hormel Union strike in

the late 1980’s. Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department deputies helped the Mower County Sheriff’s Department contend with the ongoing challenges of the strike. “Along the way, there were so many great people I worked with. People look to you for help and that is your job,” shared Sheriff Jensen. In his retirement On January 5, 2015, the Sheriff-elect Tom Kaase will take his oath to serve as the new Sheriff of Fillmore County. And, this will begin a new chapter in current Sheriff Daryl Jensen’s life. After he completely recovers from his ninth knee surgery in late 2014, since he is still a young 55-years-old, he plans to do something work-related. While Daryl’s not sure yet, he is exploring his options. He feels very fortunate to raise his family in Fillmore County. Daryl and Deanna have a daughter, Kala Jensen, who is 25-yearsold, and a son, Matthew Jensen, who is 29-years-old. Matthew and his wife Michelle have two girls with ages five and twelve. Daryl is not shy about saying how much he loves spoiling his grandchildren, and how much he looks forward to spending time with them. “But that’s part of being a grandparent!” As Daryl Jensen retires from his post as the Sheriff of Fillmore County, he leaves behind a law enforcement team that he will miss but also acknowledges how well they work together for the best interest of protecting and serving the public.

C ommentary The energy boom in America: Who gets the credit? By Jeff Erding “Great Depression” of the 1930’s. These years have been terribly painful for millions of Americans, and according to the non-partisan Congressional Research Service, the recovery has been slower and more anemic by far than the average of the last 10 recoveries. The last two months, there has been evidence of a light at the end of the tunnel: fuel prices have dropped dramatically, giving Americans much more money left in their pockets after filling their Jeff Erding fuel tanks. This means the folks have funds to use for debt reduction, to go to the movies, to buy durable goods, to take on a mortgage; in short, more disposal income. This situation will be a definite boost for the economy in the long run. America is on the verge of energy independence, now producing within our borders 85% of the fossil fuels needed to run the country. Oil production has risen an astonishing 80% in America since 2008. Because of recent innovations to reduce emissions from coal fired power plants and the substantial uptick in availability of extremely clean burning natural gas, America is the world leader in emission reductions. Green Energy (wind, solar), although certain to be extremely important in the future, has very little to do with either our emission reductions or our looming independence from foreign oil and is at least a generation away from being a significant part of Editorial Cartoon

the energy picture. So who do Americans have to thank for the ray of hope provided by the energy boom? The White House has been quick to claim the credit. A visit to the official White House website will reveal a plethora of material taking credit for any and all improvements in domestic energy production and the sure to follow improved economy. In November, Mr. Obama waxed eloquent during a visit to a steel mill in Ohio, touting administration policies that have created thousands of jobs, claiming his policies are “Building a new foundation for economic growth in America.” White House spokesman Jay Carney often refers to Administration policies on emission control and more stringent federal automotive mileage standards as being the keys to our improved energy situation. So who deserves the credit? Can Mr. Obama and the Liberal, Secular Progressive crowd rightfully claim the accolades? Fact checking again with the Congressional Research Service and the Western Energy Alliance, it turns out not so much. In reality, the huge economyboosting increase in energy and jobs related to the oil boom has taken place not BECAUSE of administration policies, but IN SPITE of them!! The administration, far from encouraging increased exploration, production, and energy refining, has done everything in its power to block any increase in the availability of fossil fuel products including the cleanest burning of all, natural gas. That’s right folks; while production on private and state held lands has jumped over 80% in six years, is has actually dropped on fed-

erally controlled land from 1.7 million barrels a day to 1.6 million barrels. The administration has actively opposed any and all pipeline construction or drilling permits, choking off thousands of high paying jobs and forcing oil transport by barge, ship, and rail, which is much less efficient and more dangerous. (Ever seen a train derailment involving tanker cars? It ain’t pretty!) Many recent attempts have been made to upgrade the capacity of America to refine petroleum products; all neatly blocked by Mr. Obama and his minions in the Senate. Evan Paul Krugman, a syndicated columnist and liberal professor of economics, has publicly urged the administration to get on board with increased energy production. Krugman recognized months ago that energy production in America should be increased as much as possible in an effort to break the strangle hold Vladimir Putin and Russia have on Europe. Turns out he is correct (and believe me folks, I hate to admit Krugman is right about anything!) as the ruble has dropped 50% in value in the past three months and Mr. Putin has a triple extra strength Excedrin headache! It also means less money for middle east terrorist organizations, certainly an added benefit. Remarkable, when you think about it. The most anti-fossil fuel Administration and American President in history has presided over an oil industry that has allowed us to achieve oil production in excess of imports for the first time in 15 years! In the year 2015, America will be the WORLD’S LARGEST oil producer, and at the same time, the world leader in emissions reduction because of the increased use of cheap, clean natural gas, all produced by fracking and all with the same presiding administration

doing everything possible to cripple production! So who really deserves credit? More than anyone, oilman Harold Hamm, who is responsible for development of the huge Bakken Oil Field in North Dakota. In 2008, Mr. Hamm visited Mr. Obama to break the exciting news that America, with the help of the new administration, could achieve the holy grail of “ Energy Independence” so long sought by every United States President. Mr. Obama’s reaction? Quote from billionaire Harold Hamm, “He barely listened to me. He didn’t want anything to do with any of it!” That’s OK Mr. Hamm. Turns out you did pretty well without him anyway! The next time I fill up my tractor, car, or truck, I’m going to tip my hat to the hard working Americans in the oil industry. They didn’t wait around for any government handouts: they rolled up their sleeves and went to work in a tough, dirty business. They helped out their fellow Americans and at the same time weakened our enemies, and for that I salute them! God Bless until next time, Jeff

C ommentary Letter about... Thanking landowners who allow angling along their streams To the Editor, We in Southeast Minnesota are blessed to have over 750 miles of trout stream water in Fillmore, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona counties. Anglers can fish for trout and smallmouth bass along the 221 miles of those streams with perpetual angling easements. Also, many landowners who have not sold an angling easement allow anglers the opportunity to fish along their streams. Being out on a stream and trying to catch a trout or bass is a wonderful way to enjoy the natural beauty of our region. Friends and families appreciate the opportunity to spend time together in such pursuits. We want to thank landowners for allowing us to be on their banks. Having access to

the streams is a privilege we are thankful for. All anglers should appreciate the property owners who allow access to these miles of fishing opportunities and to treat the resource and landowners with respect. Anglers should remember to seek permission when needed, be careful with fences and gates and take out the trash. The Win-Cres and Hiawatha Chapters of Trout Unlimited would like to thank all the landowners in the five county area who give access to anglers for the opportunity to fish. Win-Cres and Hiawatha TU are dedicated to helping increase and preserve our cold water resource for future generations. What kind of craziness and policy-making is that? Recycling 101 By LaVerne C. Paulson Recycling Education Coordinator Questions concerning the recycling of plastics in Fillmore County keep coming up week after week. I will agree that if you don’t work in recycling as I do, it can be a bit LaVerne C. complicated. Paulson There is a lot of information in the next few paragraphs that I hope clears things up a bit without becoming even more complicated. When bringing plastic containers to the Recycling Center here in Preston and for most curb side recycling in the county, the only two types we usually want are the ones with the number “1” or number “2” inside

the “chasing arrows” symbol on the bottom of the container. All other numbers should be included in your landfill garbage at this time, except for a few cities that accepting plastics 1-7. If you have not been advised otherwise, continue to recycle “1” and “2” plastic only. At least 97% of all plastic products have the recycling symbol on them, but if the number inside the symbol is 3 through 7, Fillmore County does not recycle that material at this time. There is, however, an exception to number “2” plastic. Plastic shopping and grocery bags are number “2”. We don’t want them in our recyclable material. Neither does the machine in the Twin Cities that separates the different materials. I know you have read this before, but it bears repeating. Plastic bags of all sorts wrap around shafts, gears, and pulleys and cause all kinds of slow downs and break

Monday, January 5, 2015 downs. Recyclables are not to be placed into any form of plastic bags and left on the curb for pick-up. Plastic bags are not to be filled with recyclables and deposited in the rural containers. If you bring your recyclables to the Recycling Center in garbage bags, as many people do, please empty them and either take them home to reuse or place them in the red bin marked for “Plastic Bags Only”. The contents of the red bin are not recycled, but instead are buried in a landfill. Plastic bags aren’t the only unwanted plastic products we find here at the Recycling Center. Children’s toys, deck furniture, bale twine, tarps, silage bags, flower pots, and automobile parts frequently appear among the recyclables. We are still seeing a lot of styrofoam that should be included in your landfill garbage. More recyclable plastic, main-

ly soda and water bottles, ends up in landfills than any other recyclable material. It has been estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of plastic products are recycled. Instead of buying a water bottle or two every day, invest in a reuseable container and fill it at home or at the drinking fountain at work. There is a pretty good chance that your water at home or at work is as good as, if not better, than the stuff that comes in a plastic bottle. We are seeing fewer and fewer plastic shopping bags in the red bin. This is a good sign. They are recyclable, but not at the Recycling Center. As I have mentioned before, to recycle them, take them to a store that has a container for returned plastic grocery bags. These bags are then sent to elsewhere to be recycled into new plastic products. The Bag Brigade of Fillmore County continues to grow. More and more resi-

I am already spayed, up to date with shots, good with kids, not good with dogs, and good with cats. I have a large black mark on my nose, and an almost heart-shaped spot on my back. I love to cuddle and have the loudest purr. My most endearing quality is my lack of coordination. I don’t jump on counters much. And I really like to play. I get along well with our other cats, but tend to be scared of dogs. I will fall asleep in your arms if you hold me like a baby.

Fillmore County Sports Baum’s Elves Down Unbeaten Caledonia By Paul Trende It’ll be a Merry Christmas season for the Chatfield Gopher girls. Ranked #5 in state, 8 and 1 heading to the holidays, coach Brian Baum’s girls have played big games, they will play big games; barring any unforeseen set-backs, it’ll be a season of The Trende Report marquee matchups, a season in the spotlight. The last contest before Christmas had them Paul Trende conquesting previously unbeaten TRC-East leading Caledonia. The Warriors entered at 6-0 overall, every win by double figures. But make no mistake about it, the best three teams in the TRC are in the West. Chatfield is one. The Gophers main five guards are kind of like elves; small, quick, and highly industrious. They carried out Santa Baum’s instructions. Pressure was the name of the game. Finally at full strength after injuries to key cogs Maddy Larrabee and Brook Irish, the Gophers pressed, then pressed the issue by using their top eight players, all starter-

worthy, to overwhelm a solid Warrior club. Caledonia kept up for a bit, but a 9-0 midfirst-half run put Chatfield in control 24-13. Minutes later, an 8-0 run suppressed a Warrior push to again put the Gophers’ lead into double-digits at 35-21. Chatfield led by 15 (39-24) at the half. They went 15-6 right away in the second half (5430). They led by as many as 28 (62-34). They cruised to a 68-45 victory. The elves/guards led the way. Larrabee (13 pts, 3-3 three’s, 3 stls) and Megan LaPlante (13 pts, 6 assists, 3 stls), each 5’6”, tied for the team-lead in scoring. Kirsten Keefe (5’8”) had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Maddie Talamantes (5’6”) added 9 points and 6 rebounds. Brook Irish, a non-elf at 5’10”, also had 9, as the Gophers nearly got five to double figures. They presented gifts to each other, assisting 20 of 28 field goals. For the Warriors, Chatfield was a Grinch. The Goph’s notched 19 steals. Caledonia’s lead scorer was Tracy Felten with just 9. With the game decided early, the second half was sloppy. Each team finished with 25-plus turnovers. Chatfield, when not giving the ball away (being patient), was highly efficient though, hitting on 28 of 54 shots (52%) including 13 of 20 in the second half. The Gophers (6-1, 8-1) remain

in the TRC-West dogfight with Dover-Eyota (7-0, 9-1) and P-E-M (5-1, 7-1).

Sweep and Go Eat

Turkey, ham, or whatever their holiday meal delicacy, R-P Trojan b-ballers and Kingsland Knights b-ballers all went to the holiday break without upset stomachs. All four squads got wins two days before Christmas.

Trojans a Merry Christmas….

Rushford-Peterson’s squads both handled Wabasha-Kellogg. The fourth ranked boys took the road to face the Falcons. W-K kept-up somewhat by hitting eight three’s to R-P’s 11, and by winning at the free throw line (10 of 16 to 2 of 6). Still, the Trojans led by 19 at halftime and prevailed by the same number, 73-54. Fourteen Trojans scored led by Alex Vix (14 pts, 4-5 three’s) and Charlie Krambeer (10 pts, 3-8 three’s). Cole Kingsley had 5 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals. The Trojan boys must all have been good this year. They almost all score almost every night. R-P has gotten ten or more in the scoring column in all seven of their wins. They are 6-0 in the TRC, 7-1 overall. The girls rebounded from a big loss to really good D-E by downing the Lady W-K Falcons 56-43. Brianna Koop efficiently stuffed the stat column (21 pts, 8-13 FGs, 5-6 FT’s, 11 rebs, 6 stls) with her fifth doubledouble, her fifth 20-point game of the year (19.6 PPG average). She’s just a sophomore. Ashley Agrimson (9 pts, 4-5 FGs, 5 rebs), Mikayla Crawford (8 pts, 4 rebs, 5 assists, 6 stls), Brooke Johnson (8 pts, 5 stls), and Savannah Skalet (8 pts, 5 stls) contributed in the Trojans most offensively balanced game of the year. The team all-together was also Grinch-worthy, amassing 25 steals. They are 2-3 in the TRC, 5-3 overall.

Merry Christmas

Kingsland’s basketball teams also went sweep-city, victimizing Lewiston-Altura. In Spring Valley, the Knight and Cardinal boys went back-and-forth. The first half saw six lead changes and a pair of ties. Kingsland used a 12-2 run late in the half to propel to a 37-25 halftime advantage. L-A then went 16-0 early in the second half, turning a 40-28 deficit into a 44-40 lead about midway thru the stanza. Four ties and three lead changes later, the Card’s led 61-56 with under five-minutes to play. The Knights then finished the game out on a 7-0 run. It was all capped by 6’3” forward Nick Niemeyer. The senior’s gift to L-A, a big chunk of coal in the form of a game-winning lay-up in the final five seconds. It catapulted Kingsland to the 63-61 victory. Jacob Rindels (14 pts, 7 rebs, 4 assists, 4 stls) and Quinn Larson (14 pts, 4-11 three’s) led the way. Niemeyer chipped in 9 points (4-5 FGs) and 6 rebounds while Isiah Bubany added eight. The win snapped a three-game mini-skid (against quality competition). The Knights are 4-4 in the TRC, 4-5 overall. The girls, meanwhile, travelled to Lewiston, then rode the bus home singing Christmas carols after amazing their second win of the season. Kingsland trailed 18-14 at halftime, took the lead early in the second half, and led the rest of the way for the 43-35 victory. Sophomore Courtney Schmidt had her best varsity game thus far (16 pts, 5-10 FG’s, 7 rebs, 3 assists, 3

stls). Sophomore Kailey Link (14 pts, 13 rebs) notched her third double-double of the season. Sophomore Kellyn Webster was 3 of 6 from deep for all nine of her points while sophomore Gracie Schmidt had 16 rebounds. Sophomores led the way because, ten of Kingsland’s fourteen varsity players are sophomores (with one freshman and one 8th grader). The Knights are now 2-4 in the TRC, 2-6 overall. They had two wins in TRC action all last season.

Hot Shots

Glenville-Emmons’ girls must have been bad. Lanesboro’s Olivia Haug punished them to the tone of a career-high 29 points (11-13 FG’s), 19 rebounds, 8 steals, and 4 assists in a Burro win. Lanesboro’s boys, behind Tylar Miller’s efficient career-best 19 (3-4 three’s, 4-6 FT’s, 6-8 FGs), ended a six-game losing streak by beating LeRoy-Ostrander. Coranda Vickerman flirted with a triple double (14 pts, 12 rebs, 8 assists) as M-C’s girls beat Schaeffer. The Houston boys got 17 from Austin Peplinski and a careerbest 16 from James Loken in downing G-E. M-C’s Donnie Lind had 20 in a defeat to Lyle/ Pacelli. Chatfield’s Christian Bance scored 21, hitting four three’s for the fourth straight game, but the Gophers fell to #3 Caledonia.

Journal Writing Project:

New Year’s resolution By Stephanie Phillips While most people are making their New Year’s resolutions about losing weight or getting active, you could be making yours to save a pet in need. According to ASPCA (2014) there are approximately 7.6 million animals that are sent to aniStephanie mal shelters Phillips every year. Most of these animals were either beaten or neglected. ASPCA stated that only about 2.7 million of the animals living in shelters are adopted each year. The ASPCA has concluded that about 31 percent of all dogs in the shelter are euthanized, and 41 percent of cats are euthanized. In the state of Minnesota, the Animal Cruelty Law (2014) states that for regular animal cruelty, it is a fine of $343.21, and for participating in the fighting of animals, it is a fine of $343.31. Personally I believe that there should be more strict consequences for people that abuse their animals. These animals are just wanting a place to feel safe and loved. Yet there are people that do not make them feel safe because they are being neglected. These animals have no voice and cannot tell you that they are hurt. The domesticated animals expect their human owners to take care of them. If there is somebody who cannot take care of their animals, she or he should put them up for adoption so that they can make another family happy. Just by going in and adopting a pet, you could be saving their life. These animals are wanting to be in a place where they are loved and taken care of instead of beaten and starved. In some cases the previous owners have neglected their companions to such an extent that they are unable to be trained to behave. In these cases the animals are forced to be euthanized. Although there

are many cases where the animal is abused, they are able to be saved by either a foster family or by the workers at the shelter. But there are times when people are forced to give up their animals. An example of this is when people move to a new place, and they are unable to bring them with them. Even if you are unable to adopt a pet due to the adoption fee, there is always the option of fostering an animal. This is when you are just keeping the animal at your place until either you decide to adopt, or another person is willing to give the animal a home. These are great opportunities for pet lovers to be able to help out an animal and get them ready to be welcomed into a home. Stephanie Phillips is a student at Mabel-Canton High School. She is one of five area students participating in the Journal Writing Project, now in its sixteenth year.

Happy Sweet

Country Coffee Talk By Jeanette Schmidt

Here we are in the month of January 2015, named after the Roman god Janus, who had two faces…one allowed him to look forward into the coming year and one backwards into the past year. Typically, January is the coldest month of the year and the Vikings didn’t make the playoffs. The resolutions have probably been broken, that healthy diet might already be history and the new exercise program may be on the skids. But wait….there happens to be a special date for breaking those resolutions which you haven’t yet accomplished or the ones you gave up on… it’s Jan. 17 called “Ditch the New Year’s Resolution Day”!! No guilt, if you wait until that date.

Seems January is the official month for a number of designated events….who knew. Somebody has come up with one or more event for each day of the month, starting with Jan 1, “New Year’s Day”. This is the date to look ahead with positive beginnings. Jan. 3 is the date for you, if you were lucky enough to get a fruitcake for Christmas – “Fruit Cake Toss Day” with no guilty feelings. Also, on Jan. 3 is a favorite one of mine - “Festival of Sleep Day” – after the holidays it’s a day to recharge. You don’t have to feel guilty at all, if you sleep in or just sleep all day on this date. The surgeon general has

even determined that sleeping is good for your health. Jan. 5 just happens to be “National Whipped Cream Day”, which falls on the birthday of Reddi-wip founder (1946), Aaron Lapin. Since this date celebrates whipped cream’s contribution to the dessert world, I’m going to share a yummy whipped cream frosting recipe…one that doesn’t melt at room temperature. Bake your favorite cake and frost it with this frosting. Then sit back and have a cup of coffee and dream of where you will go to celebrate Jan. 8, which just happens to be “National Male Watchers Day”…some place warm on a beach sounds good to me! (Sorry guys, no girl watchers day was listed). These are just a few of the unusual events in January. There’s too many to list here though, as there are 31 of them!

Combine cream cheese, sugar, vanilla & almond extracts in a large mixing bowl. Mix on medium speed until smooth. While mixer is still whipping, slowly pour in the heavy cream…scraping bowl a couple of times. Continue whipping until the cream can hold a stiff peak. Makes 5 cups

Thank You!

The words thank you just seem so inadequate, when trying to express the gratitude we feel for all of those who participated in the benefit for our family on Oct. 25. What an absolutely amazing day. One thought that continued to run through my mind was actually a line from The Wizard of Oz. “There is no place like home.” Thank you family, friends, classmates, employers, coworkers, and in some cases, strangers. Thank you for all the time, energy, love and selflessness you put forth to make the benefit not only come together, but to be such a success. “There is no place like home.” Thank you for the generosity from our communities. The businesses, local farmers, fire departments, from our hometown Preston, also Harmony, Chatfield, Lanesboro, Fountain, Mabel, Canton, Spring Grove, Rochester, Rushford, Fillmore, Spring Valley, and Wykoff. We even had someone reach out to us from California. “There is no place like home.” Thank you God. Thank you for placing these amazing, compassionate people in our lives. We could never have imagined the outpouring and numbers that would come to our aid. Please watch over them and bless them, for they know not what they have done. Always in our hearts and prayers, Mike, Missy (Copeman) Woellert Family

GasBuddy update

Red Cross offers safety tips as Farm bill and crop production arctic blast hits Minnesota workshops in January

DECEMBER 29, 2014- Average retail gasoline prices in Minnesota have fallen 11.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.16/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 2,856 gas outlets in Minnesota. This compares with the national average that has fallen 9.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.28/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Minnesota during the past week, prices yesterday were 98.3 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 52.0 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 50.6 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 100.5 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “The dramatic decline at the pump continues to reap significant savings for the motoring public - over $525 million less spent every day versus this past summer, or $375 million less than the same time last year,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy. “The slump in crude oil has wavered slightly and we’re in the fourth quarter of the game. However, there is still a chance that crude prices resume their slump again, and carry the pump plunge into overtime,” DeHaan said. Gas prices have fallen $1.85/ gal in Michigan since June 28, the largest drop in the nation. Following close behind: Kentucky, down $1.66/gal, Indiana, down $1.62/gal, Ohio, down $1.61/gal, and Illinois, down $1.60/gal over the same time frame. More statistics can be found at media.gasbuddy.com. About GasBuddy.com GasBuddy is the premiere source for real-time local gas prices. Founded in 2000, GasBuddy.com developed as an initiative to provide consumers access to local, current gas prices. Through the GasBuddy.com website and the free GasBuddy mobile app, users can find and share gas prices with fellow drivers, saving big money at the pump.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.(December 29, 2014) Bitter arctic air will put millions of Minnesotans in a deep chill overnight with temperatures 25-30 degrees below zero. The American Red Cross recommends the following tips to stay safe during the deep freeze. Cold safety tips •Wear layers of lightweight clothing to stay warm. Gloves and a hat will help prevent losing body heat. •Someone should seek medical attention immediately if they have symptoms of hypothermia, including confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. •Watch for symptoms of frostbite, including numbness, flushed gray, white, blue or yellow skin discoloration, numbness, or waxy feeling skin. •Don’t forget family pets – bring them indoors. If they can’t come inside, make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and that they can get to unfrozen water. •Avoid frozen pipes - run water, even at a trickle, to help prevent them from freezing. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals out of the reach of children. Keep the garage doors closed if there are water lines in the garage. •Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night to help avoid freezing pipes. •Download the Red Cross First Aid App for quick, expert advice on what to do in case of an emergency. This free app is available on the Apple iTunes or Google Play stores. Home fire risk increases during cold Local Red Cross workers responded to more than 700 home fires in Minnesota dur-

ing 2014, eight in just the past few days. During extremely cold weather, the risk for a fire in someone’s home can increase. To avoid fire danger, remember the following: •Never use a stove or oven to heat the home. •Remember “Three feet from heat”. If using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable at least three feet away – things such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs. Turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are out before leaving the room or going to bed. •If using a fireplace, use a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs. •Use generators correctly – never operate a generator inside the home, including in the basement or garage. •Don’t hook a generator up to the home’s wiring. The safest thing to do is to connect the equipment someone wants to power directly to the outlets on the generator. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides nearly half of the nation’s blood supply; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission. University of Minnesota Extension along with Farm Service Agency (FSA) will hold meetings covering the 2014 Farm Bill on January 13 in the Lewiston Community Center, 75 Rice Street, from 1:303:30 p.m., January 14 in the Harmony Community Center from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m., and January 15 in the RCTC Heintz Center Rochester from 1-3:30 p.m. The University of Minnesota Southern Research and Outreach Center (SROC) will also be holding their annual Crops Day in St. Charles on January 14. The 2014 Farm Bill brings changes to crop insurance and there are several decisions to make - for both landowners and farmers; Will you update your yields? Are you going to reallocate your base acres? Will you enroll in Price Loss Coverage (PLC) or Agriculture Revenue Coverage (ARC)? What’s the best strategy for your farm? These are the questions that will get answered at any of these meetings. Representatives from FSA will go over the new program, and UMN Extension will cover enrollment strategies. If you can’t make it to one of the meetings listed, there are other opportunities in neighboring counties.

Visit http://z.umn.edu/2014fb for a complete list of meetings and other information. There are decisions and actions to take for landowners who don’t farm, but rent their land out; their participation in the meeting is encouraged. Crop production will be the topic on January 14 at the SROC’s annual Crops Update at the St. Charles Community Center, 830 Whitewater Ave. Topics on forage and cover crops, corn, soybean, weed management, and P and K fertilization, nutrient loss, and erosion will be covered at this event. Experts from University of Minnesota and MN Department of Ag will have valuable information regarding crop management that will aid producers in 2015 and beyond. Register from 8:309 a.m., and the program concludes around 2:30 p.m. Cost of this workshop is $35 and covers handouts, refreshments, and lunch. where an elderly woman walking across a busy intersection on her way to church was struck by a driver who was late for work. He didn’t see the woman in the roadway, consequently striking and killing her. The driver had not scraped his windshield properly, thus had limited visibility. Answer: Minnesota Stature 169.71 subdivision 3 states; “No person shall drive any motor vehicle with the windshield or front side windows covered with steam or frost to such an extent as to prevent proper vision.” While the statute does not mention rear windows I highly recommend that all windows be cleared. He was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, the American Legion, and served on the Canton fire department, Canton city council, and the Assumption church council and lay ministry. His circle of love was huge, as was his heart. Pat is survived by two sons, Phil (Bev) of Abita Springs, La., and Scott of Lakeville; three daughters,
