he much-anticipated Fried Chicken Fest returns to Winnipeg, inviting locals to indulge in a variety of unique and crunchy chicken dishes. This festival, unique to Manitoba and a staple for the past six years, showcases more than 40 participating restaurants from January 17 to 27. Celebrating the richness of Winnipeg's culinary talents, Fried Chicken Fest offers a platform for chefs to engage in friendly competition and creative culinary expression. Over a span of ten days, culinary enthusiasts are encouraged to explore and taste numerous chicken dishes, ultimately voting for their top pick. “Fried Chicken Fest has quickly become a cornerstone event in our local culinary landscape. It's a fantastic opportunity for chefs to flex their creative muscles, and for the community to come together and savor Winnipeg's finest offerings,” remarked Chef Allan Pineda, the co-founder of the event. Each participating restaurant will compete by offering a unique fried chicken dish, exclusively available during the festival. These dishes are not just about the fried chicken; they're an exploration of flavors, spices, and innovative presentations, challenging the taste buds of every food lover in the city. The festival, conceived by Susie Erjavec Parker and Chef Allan Pineda, aims to spice up the chilly January days while supporting local eateries. Parker, known for her #saveMBrestaurants campaign, brings extensive expertise in restaurant and food marketing. Chef Allan, a culinary maverick behind Bahay Kubo and Baon Manila Nights, is renowned for his international pop-up culinary events. The concept of Fried Chicken Fest was born over a table in a Winnipeg restaurant, and it has since become a cherished tradition. “We're overjoyed to see the community embracing this festival as a January highlight. Department of Education Agrees to Gradual Return of June-March Academic Calendar in 2025
I
n a unanimous decision, the Department of Education (DepEd) has collaborated with school officials, teachers, students, and parents to initiate the school year 20242025 on July 29, signaling a phased return to the traditional June-March academic calendar. This move aims to reinstate the old calendar fully within three school years. The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) confirmed the decision, emphasizing that terms are not finalized. ACT Chairman Vladimer Quetua disclosed that the 60-day break for the school year 2025-2026 might be reduced by 15 days, allowing classes to
begin early June 2026. The decision emerged after a consultation with various stakeholders at the DepEd central office. While awaiting DepEd's official response, Teachers' Dignity Coalition Chairman Benjo Basas expressed gratitude, urging prompt policy adjustments. Quetua assured teachers that the shortened break would be compensated in service credits. We anticipate further consultations and a final meeting with stakeholders before the policy's release. Calls for the return to the old calendar cite the discomfort experienced by students in the current academic setup.

Hockey's New Chapter: Filipino Kids Take to the Ice at Filipino Heritage Night
T
he once distant dream of a Filipino minor hockey team in Winnipeg is now a burgeoning reality, thanks to Filipino
youth hockey initiatives over the last year. The Winnipeg Jets' 2nd Annual Filipino Heritage Night, building on the success of the inaugural event in November 2022, has been pivotal in introducing hockey to the Filipino community. During the first intermission of the Jets-Flyers Filipino Heritage Night game, along with my two coaches - Ron Castres and Eric Lapauba, 20 kids primarily from the First Shift program and future participants of Jets Hockey Development
camps took to the ice for a friendly 4-minute scrimmage. This cultural shift has been most evident through the enthusiastic participation of Filipino youth in programs like the First Shift and Spring/Summer hockey camps with Jets Hockey Development at Hockey For All Centre. In my experience coaching U7 Timbits hockey at Seven Oaks Minor Hockey Association, the surge in young Filipino players is both heartening and inspiring. Around 40 kids aged 5-10 have taken to the ice, a scenario unimaginable just a year ago. Corporate and community support has been key in overcoming barriers such as equipment costs and accessibility. Thanks to the NHL, Bauer Hockey, the Winnipeg Jets and APNA Hockey for coming together to support Filipino youth hockey initiatives, these young hockey enthusiasts and equally excited parents, ensuring that hockey is accessible to everyone. The results are already visible. Children who had never skated before are now confidently gliding across the ice, embodying a perfect blend of Canadian and Filipino cultures. This integration into hockey not only opens doors for young talents but also enriches the sport with diversity. As this initiative continues, the future of hockey in the Filipino community looks bright. It's a story of inclusivity, cultural integration, and the unifying power of sports. These young players are not just engaging in a pastime; they're forging a new, inclusive future for hockey.

WINNIPEG JETS 2ND ANNUAL FILIPINO HERITAGE NIGHT
T
he Winnipeg Jets hosted their second annual Filipino Heritage Night, a vibrant celebration of Winnipeg's significant Filipino community, on Saturday, Jan. 13, against the Philadelphia Flyers. This event, marking the presence of Canada's third-largest Filipino community, was a festive showcase of Filipino culture, cuisine, and collaborative efforts within the community. It was a special moment for four outstanding Winnipegers at the 2nd Annual Winnipeg Jets Filipino Heritage Night at centre ice for the ceremonial puck drop. Larissa Pagdato, Jordy Wyant Hanna Pagdato, who recently clinched bronze for Team Philippines at the Union women's ice hockey tournament in the United Arab Emirates. Gil Buenaventura, the Executive Director of Magdaragat Philippines, and Folklorama's Pearl of the Orient Pavilion. Ma-Buhay!, co-created by Joseph Sevillo and Rainbow Stage sang the US and Canadian national anthems. Ma-Buhay!, co-created by Joseph Sevillo and Rainbow Stage. Ma-Buhay! will bring a fusion of
pop/hip-hop music, integrating both English and Tagalog lyrics into their lively choreography. Cultural entertainment was provided by Magdaragat Philippines, hosts of Folklorama's Pearl of the Orient Pavilion. On-ice projections during the game were digital media elements created by students from Sisler High School’s CREATE program. This entertainment arts training program showcases the creativity and skills of local students, contributing a digital flair to the night's festivities. Enhancing the in-game experience, Jets gameday hosts collaborated with local radio personalities Donna Natividad-Arenas (CKJS 92.7) and Tyler Magnaye (Virgin Radio) introducing elements of Tagalog into the presentation, further emphasizing the evening's theme. The culinary aspect at Canada Life Centre concessions will feature beloved Filipino dishes. The menu includes pork and vegetable lumpia rolls, a unique Filipino Jet Dog topped with sweet and sour shrimp, chicken adobo skewers, a sesame soy chicken rice bowl, and the
sweet treat of turon – a caramelized banana dessert spring roll. Another special moment was the First Shift hockey players taking to the ice in the first intermission. The Apna/Jets Bauer First Shift
program in collaboration with Apna Hockey, has introduced over 120 kids, many of Filipino heritage, to hockey, providing them with full equipment and training from Apna Hockey instructors. This initiative is a part of True North’s commitment to expanding hockey at the grassroots level. In a charitable gesture, six limited
edition, autographed Winnipeg Jets Filipino Heritage jerseys were up for silent auction at the game. The proceeds will support various Filipino organizations and Filipino youth hockey initiatives. These jerseys, featuring a unique Filipino Heritage logo designed by Jonato Dalayoan and Marc Gomez, will also be available online for auction.

s the 2024 NHL season progresses, the Winnipeg Jets have emerged as a formidable force and the Jets are in first place in the National Hockey League with a 29-10-4 record. Rick Bowness as 2024 All-Star Coach: Rick Bowness, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets, has been appointed as one of the four head coaches for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, as announced by the Jets and the NHL. All-Star Weekend takes place at Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, hosted by the Toronto Maple Leafs from February 2-4, 2024.

Jets’ Record-Breaking Achievements: The team set franchise records for their longest winning (eight games) and point streaks (14 games), along with the most wins and fewest goals allowed in the first half of an 82-game season. Bowness' Previous Season and All-Star Coaches Selection Process: In his first season with Winnipeg (2022-23), Bowness led the team to a playoff berth. He joins Rick Tocchet, Peter Laviolette, and Jim Montgomery as head coaches for the All-Star Game, selected based on the highest points percentage in their respective divisions as of January 13th. Philadelphia Flyers End Jets' Streak: The Flyers, led by Samuel Ersson's goaltending and Cam Atkinson's two goals, snapped the Jets' eight-game winning streak and 14-game point run with a 2-0 victory. Winnipeg 150 graphic unveiled
T
he City of Winnipeg unveiled the Winnipeg 150 graphic.
The graphic was designed by local artist, Jordan Stranger of Totem Doodem. Stranger’s work is deeply rooted in the traditions within contemporary Indigenous culture, and he uses his life experiences and spiritual practice learned through Ojibwe teachings to drive his artistic passions. “We were excited to work with Jordan Stranger on a Winnipeg 150 graphic to use throughout the year that represented our city, while acknowledging the importance of our community’s Indigenous roots,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “Embodying the Winnipeg 150 theme, "our shared stories, our shared future," the graphic is rich in symbolic details and meaning.”

The Winnipeg 150 graphic contains a number of unique details within it, including: ● The outline of a turtle shell to represent Turtle Island ● An overlay of the current footprint of the city of Winnipeg ● A tribute to our varied seasons with the inclusion of sun and snow ● The North Star ● Mother Earth embedded in the water of the Red and Assiniboine rivers
● A crocus which is part of the City crest ● Crops, including sage and tobacco ● Footsteps on the path of reconciliation ● Seven trees to represent the seven sacred teachings "Creating a graphic for the city that I grew up in was a huge honour,” said Jordan Stranger, Totem Doodem. “I hope this graphic can be a symbol for growth and reflection on what Winnipeg has to offer and what we wish to accomplish." The Winnipeg 150 graphic will start to appear in prominent locations around the city, including on banners outside City Hall. The City is also working with The Forks Trading Company to make Winnipeg 150 merchandise available for purchase in their storefront and online in the near future. ne of the pioneers of PostPunk New Wave was Joy Division, which evolved into New Order after its vocalist Ian Curtis decided to kill himself, in 1980. In the pre-Internet era, firsthand stories were hard to come by, especially for fans who lived in countries different from where such bands originated. Followers relied mostly on music magazines and spiels by knowledgeable radio DJs, as well as from whatever text they could read from the sleeves of records. That is why, for the last decade and a half at least, the availability and accessibility of books about genres and bands has made music more enjoyable. Cultural Blossoms: Winnipeg’s Fleurs De Villes Brings Filipino Fiesta to Life By Johnny Cantiveros

ow does one capture the richness of the filipino culture in one display? How can it inspire people who have never been to the Philippines to be curious about its traditions and celebrations so distinctly? In the middle of January when
Winnipeg is usually at its coldest, The Leaf at Assiniboine Park is hosting a fresh floral celebration exhibition called Fleurs De Villes VOYAGE. This is a world-renowned exhibition showcase that features 15 one-ofa-kind fresh floral mannequins, all created by talented local designers and artists. This included various

travel destinations like Japan, Brazil, Ethiopia, Tahiti, Ukraine, and of course the Philippines. Juliet Cadiz from Posh Pampas did a wonderful job representing the Philippines. She drew her inspiration from “Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon” and wanted to showcase the natural vibrancy
of fruits, flowers and vegetation. Every year on May 15, the town of Lucban plays host to the Pahiyas Festival - a colourful harvest celebration renowned for its rainbowcoloured spectacles made from local produce. During the festival, locals adorn their homes with succulent fruits, vegetables, vivacious flowers and creative decorations made from local produce including kiping, a rice wafer shaped into colourful leaf-like designs. Juliet who moved to Canada from Paranque at a young age wanted her mannequin to "spark curiosity about our culture and to create a sense of awe" to all that come visit VOYAGE and to help other "Filipinos reconnect to their heritage." The mannequin Juliet created took well over 30 hours and it shows. Her homage to the Filipinana traditional wear really reminded me of my childhood growing up and seeing my mom and titas wearing them to formal celebrations. Her display was warm, inviting while being majestic and regal. It was

quite inspiring to see our culture displayed amongst other beautiful and well done mannequins a deep sense of belonging is what I gained from Voyage and Juliet’s work.
