n a candid revelation on Luis Manzano's vlog, Claudine Barretto disclosed that she is allegedly chasing hundreds of millions from her ex-husband, Raymart Santiago. The actress claimed that only P25,000 was left for her in one bank, while the rest remained unaccounted for. Despite the financial dispute, Claudine emphasized that she doesn't want to label her ex-spouse and the father

of her children as a thief. Clarifying the situation to Luis, Claudine stated that during their time together, Raymart returned only P7 million, with ongoing attempts to retrieve the money hidden by him. Claudine expressed her determination to reclaim what she believes is rightfully hers for the sake of her growing children, who are now faced with educational expenses.

Asserting her stance, Claudine challenged Raymart, stating that she would fight for what is due to her and her children. She emphasized the hard work and sacrifices she put into acquiring their properties, considering it an investment for her kids' future. As Claudine awaits the resolution of their ongoing annulment proceedings, she revealed the delays and her ex-husband's alleged attempt to gain custody, raising questions about his intentions. The actress also hinted at issues related to Raymart's new relationship without explicitly naming Jodi Sta. Maria, as she faced persistent inquiries. Claudine vowed that the truth would surface soon, promising a revealing outcome in their legal battle. The actress, now noticeably slimmer due to an 80-pound weight loss from intermittent dieting, confidently stated that developments would unfold in the near future.

s the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) enters its final screening days, the collective box office revenue from the ten participating films has already surpassed P700 million, exceeding this year's target. MMFF Chairman Atty. Don Artes expressed confidence in surpassing last year's record of P1.061 billion as moviegoers return to theaters. However, amid the festival's success, concerns have emerged regarding high ticket prices. Alessandra de Rossi, lead actress of "Firefly," raised awareness that their film had ticket prices ranging from P520 to P800, significantly higher than the usual P300 to P400 range. a reconsideration of ticket pricing, emphasizing that affordable entertainment was vital for the Filipino audience. Despite acknowledging the relative nature of ticket prices based on location and operational costs, Artes expressed support for initiatives by Senator Jinggoy Estrada and Representative Arjo Atayde to lower ticket prices and address taxes and distribution fees in favor of movie producers. After the MMFF, all ten films will be showcased at the Manila International Film Festival in Los Angeles, California, scheduled for January 29 to February 2. Meanwhile, discussions about lowering cinema ticket prices and supporting the local film industry's sustainability continue among stakeholders.

DepEd Assures Adequate Resources for Grade 11 Students Amid SHS Program Discontinuation

T

he Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has assured that public schools possess the necessary facilities and teaching staff to accommodate over 17,000 Grade 11 students affected by the discontinuation of senior high school (SHS) programs in state and local universities and colleges (SUCs and LUCs). Since the initiation of the K-12 transition period in 2016, the government has implemented robust measures to ensure nationwide schools are equipped with adequate resources for SHS students, according to DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas. Regional offices of DepEd reported that each public school division can accommodate an average of 250 learners, providing sufficient space for the incoming Grade 11 students. The move follows the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) directive for all SUCs and LUCs to cease offering SHS programs starting the next school year (SY 2024-2025). While Senators Sherwin Gatchalian and Francis Escudero endorse the discontinuation as legal, they emphasize the need to address the needs of affected students. The Teacher's Dignity Coalition (TDC) and Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) have expressed concern about the "haphazard" discontinuation and urge the government

to extend the K-12 transition period to prevent potential drawbacks. Additionally, they stress the importance of minimizing additional costs for families and ensuring the quality of education remains intact. The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) warns of potential shortages in schools nationwide and calls for increased funding for public schools to address massive shortages and support SUCs and LUCs offering SHS programs. CHED Chairman J. Prospero de Vera III acknowledges the concerns and leaves the matter to the board of regents and trustees of SUCs and LUCs for further action.

n Manila, the upcoming procession of the Black Nazarene on January 9 will mark its return after a three-year hiatus, but with strict measures in place. Devotees will be prohibited from climbing onto the carriage carrying the life-size religious icon, as announced by Fr. Jesus Madrid Jr., a recently ordained deacon of Quiapo Church. While devotees can hand over handkerchiefs for the caretakers to wipe on the image and touch the pulling rope in turns, climbing is strictly forbidden. Fr. Madrid urged caution, especially for elderly and physically weak devotees, suggesting they stay on

the sidewalk to avoid injuries during the procession. Security concerns prompted restrictions on backpacks and only allowed transparent water bottles. The Philippine National Police plans to deploy 15,200 personnel for crowd control during the Traslacion, expecting around 2.5 million participants. Despite no reported major security threats, authorities are preparing for potential worst-case scenarios, including a no-fly zone and the consideration of signal jammers. The Philippine Coast Guard will also deploy K-9 units for security measures.

Larissa and Hanna Pagdato A big opportunity came to Larissa and Hanna Pagdato who have been involved in hockey since their younger years when they were asked to join the Philippine team at the Union Women's Ice Hockey Tournament in the United Arab Emirates. And it was a big surprise for the hockey-loving sister to play with the Philippine Hockey Team, knowing that this was the first time to face some international teams from Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, and at the same time felt proud to play representing the Philippines as the home country of their parents. Hanna is currently a goalie for the Mount Allison University Mounties in New Brunswick, while Larissa is a former junior hockey player as well as the coach of the True North Foundation's U13 team.

GOLF and SKI: FERNIE, British Columbia

by Gem and Lita Anis

F

ernie is a city in the region of southeastern British Columbia, Canada, where you can both play golf and ski downhill during the winter season. The only city in Canada that is fully encircled by the rugged Rocky Mountains, Fernie has a population of over 5,000 who enjoy most golfing and the winter sports of snowshoeing, tobogganing, skating, and alpine skiing. Since the depression of the 30's skiing as a sport gained popularity when the people had time on their hands. Hence, Fernie Alpine Resort has become popular destination for most of western Canadians ski enthusiasts. Aside from downhill skiing the resort also operates a mountain bike park, hiking, guided hikes, and sightseeing in summer. Fernie Alpine Resort has ten (10) lifts servicing one hundred forty-two (142) named runs, five (5) alpine bowls, and tree skiing. With the ten (10) lifts, seven of them are chair lifts, two are highspeed quads, two are slow quads, and three are triples. Fernie has ski trails for all ability levels from beginners to experts. The "Falling Star" is the

longest run, unbelievably five kms. or three miles! This popular terrain is an easy groomed blue run, running all the way from the top of the White Pass Chair down to the bottom of the hill. We enjoyed it the most! Whether you are a novice or a pro it is helpful to know about skiing ability levels. Knowing your skiing ability level determines which skis, bindings and boots are the right style for you. If you are a first time skier you're at level one (1), means never ski before; level 2 is a beginner or a novice, still learning to turn both left and right directions, and stop on gentle terrains, using snowplow or usually rides magic carpet lifts; may progress to chairlifts and other easy green runs; level 3, comfortable novice, able to link snowplow turns on green terrains; level 4, called intermediate, able to execute basic sweeping parallel turns with properly timed pole plants; and level 5, advanced, able to execute strong parallel turns on all blue runs and easy black turns; level 6, called expert, enjoy the challenge of skiing in control in all conditions and terrains. Don't worry, every one has to start from the beginning and it could

take many or several lessons (or attempts) before you, falling maybe more than a hundred times, can learn the art of the sport. But once you learn it, you would always crave for the snow to fall and hit the slopes. As a downhill skier it is also important to get familiar with the slope or hill terrains - the ski trails difficulty. The easiest (represented by colour GREEN circles) are the easy gentle slopes, generally wide and groomed; the intermediate (represented by colour BLUE squares) generally trails are groomed but more difficult and steeper than the beginner's trails; and lastly, advanced trails (represented by colour BLACK diamonds), most difficult, steep and usually narrow, may or may not be groomed. For kids, Fernie Alpine Resort has extensive beginners' terrain which are reached via the mini Moose magic carpet in amethyst purple colour, also the Mighty Moose Platter and the Deer Chair. Getting tired and hungry at the top of the Fernie slopes we had a fine time at the "Lost Boys Cafe" at the top of the Timber Chair. Besides offering one of the most scenic dining locations in Fernie and providing expansive views of the Elk Valley, the cafe has a variety of light snacks, warm/cold beverages and lunch. Fernie, with its Fernie Golf Club celebrating 100 hundred years in 2018, boasts a professional 18-hole golf course that caters to all levels whether you're an experienced golfer or a novice; has something to offer both the low handicap player and/or beginner. Surrounded by lofty Rocky Mountain peaks and wrapped in a lush forest, the club is a must-visit course on any golfer's tour. The full course opens on mid-May subject to weather conditions. Remember? - ski season at Fernie is December to April, usually on the 3rd and 4th respectively, depending on the snow conditions.

Maestro Jett's Piano Lesson Winter Recital

T

he Filipino community in Winnipeg is teeming with talented individuals in various disciplines who deserve to be recognized. One of such gifted persons in the music field is Jett Russel Panganiban--a Classically trained pianist, a music teacher, and a passionate performer. "Five years ago, it all started as a dream—a vision of creating a space where passion and profession could seamlessly merge, where music could be nurtured, and where students could find a haven to explore the enchanting world of piano. "Little did I know that this dream would face its share of challenges, struggles, setbacks, and occasional doubts. There were moments when criticisms and inquisitions from skeptics echoed loudly, and the path seemed daunting. "However, it is said that every great journey is marked by trials, and it is the strength to overcome them that defines success. "Despite the obstacles, the dream persisted, fueled by a burning passion for music and an unwavering

belief in the transformative power of piano lessons. "Today, I am proud to say that, against all odds, that dream has become a reality again. The Winter

Recital that the audience witnessed is a testament to the dedication, perseverance, and talent of each and every student who has been a part of Jett's Piano Lesson."
