• In 1861, when he was 13 years old, he started his studies of drawing in Academia Portuense de Belas Artes and finished his studies in 1866. Image 3: “Academia Portuense de Belas Artes”

• From 1867 to 1870, he lived in Paris. In 1872, he lived in Rome and then in Porto, where he received several awards.

• He colaborated in the art department in magazines like “A arte portuguesa” from 1882 to 1884 and “Atlântida” from 1915 to 1920.

• He married Amélia Macedo in 1885, who had two children named Fernando and Raquel Soares dos Reis.

Escola Artística Soares dos Reis • “The current Escola Artística de Soares dos Reis was officially established in January 1884, being designated then as Escola de Desenho Industrial de Faria de Guimarães do Bonfim. Its activity began a year later in the facilities of a building Housing in Campo 24 de agosto. In 1887 , the intention of constructing building for the School appears. its name changes to Escola Industrial Faria de Guimarães . But the constructed building would be delivered to the Asilo das Raparigas Abandonadas, keeping the school in the old building”.(withdrawn from https://www.essr.net/drupal/?q=pt/book/export/html/17, accessed in18/02/2016) • Today the name of the school is Escola Artística de Soares dos Reis .


THE EVOLUTION OF ESCOLA artística Soares dos Reis • 1917- The school would be evicted and the building would be an industry of beer and soft drinks.

• 1919- They formed a preliminary daytime course which ended in 1930. • 1920- They formed a daytime course specific for male students, for example: carver, cabinet maker, engraver, goldsmith, painter-decorator, weaver. The Ministry of Education authorized the transference of the school to the old building . • 1922- The school moved to the old house of Liceu Alexandre Herculano in Santo Ildefonso street.


THE EVOLUTION OF ESCOLA artística Soares dos Reis • 1925- Specific courses of feminine skills for female students were created, such as: linen-seamstress, embroiderer-lace-maker, milliner and dresses.

• 1927- Authorization of the purchase of the old hat factory premises located at 49, Firmeza street that belonged to the former Sociedade Industrial Firmeza. • 1928- Official opening of the school in the new building in the old hat factory.

• 1931- Training course of Arts. • 1955- Opening of new school facilities.


THE EVOLUTION OF Escola Artística Soares dos Reis • 1948- Home of specific courses of artistic nature, such as: decorative painting , decorative sculpture , artistic furniture, engraver, copper burner, brass and steel. • 1955- Opening of new school facilities. •

1985- Centenary of School Soares dos Reis.

• 2003- Creation of the official website of the School.

• 2008- Inauguration of new building of the school in Major David Magno Street . A building model designed and built from scratch to house the school.
