CHILDREN ARCHITECTS TO CREATE HOMES

Belgium - Brussels

Besides the architecturale visits we had some serious meeting time as well. Not that long time ago the school year started, this meeting was a great chance to discuss the next activities and develop the objectives for the coming year. 163 nationalities represented in Brussels makes it the most diverted city of the world. This diversity is reflected on the multicultural environment of the school. Therefore we found it important that each participant of the meeting had the chance to teach something about her/his culture. For the pupils, this was an amazing experience.

I was impressed by the secret telephone and the different shapes in the house of Horta… was the reaction of a Polish student after visiting the Horta museum

Also on the agenda was a visit to the private house and several buildings of the known Belgian architects “Victor Horta”. He is considered one of the most important names in Art Nouveau architecture of Europe.

October ’15 is the month were Belgium had an important role for the CATCH-project. The 4th project meeting was held in Brussels.

To close the project week we spent the last day at the abc-house. A creative place that organise different workshops for pupils. “Architecture” was the theme and during the entire day pupils had the chance to experience different skills, to build and create their specific ideas.

Don’t be mistaken by the picture above but just during this week we had the coldest/wettest October week ever. Nevertheless we made the best out of it. Of course a must see was the Atomium, this weird 102m tall building from the 50’s with 9 spheres, is an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. It feels surreal being inside the building.

The results were astonishing and the pupils had a great time there. Further a visit to the Grand Place, which is Unesco World Heritage. An art nouveau tour through the city of Brussels made us understand the complexity of architecture in this city.

Greek student: “It’s the first time I see so many different styles of architecture in one street. Old and new, modern and art niveau… Brussels is one big mix of different styles.” - Page 1 -

The week ended with a goodbye Halloween par ty between all the participants, parents, pupils and friends of the Belgian school.
