Scia Engineer Editions

Scia Engineer is offered in three Editions tailored for the needs of specific groups of users. Concept Edition, Professional Edition and Expert Edition.

Scia Engineer How far dare you go? Design of all types of structures in 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D Structural engineers from all corners of the world face similar problems, regardless of whether they work in civil-, mechanical-, or another engineering field. On the one hand, they have to deal with contractors who come with audacious plans to construct the highest, the longest, the most spectacular, the most technologically advanced buildings ever made. On the other, they have to tackle the everyday tasks of engineering practice with efficiency and ease. Scia Engineer, a graphical software system for design, calculations and code-checking of structures, fits into both categories. It has been primarily designed to serve civil engineers; nevertheless, it finds its application in other engineering fields too. Scia Engineer is an ideal tool for calculations in any dimensionality from a simple beam (1D), to a single plate (2D), to a whole building (3D) to a detailed analysis of distribution of internal forces over time in prestressed structures (4D).

Thinking globally Globalisation has inevitably also affected the engineering industries. Established engineering companies merge into transnational corporations, but even smaller design offices serve clients from neighbouring or distant countries. This brings new demands on both the engineers and the tools they use. Scia Engineer is localised into 10 languages and is distributed with a set of integrated libraries. These libraries store code-related materials for various national standards, steel cross-sections from different manufacturers, reinforcement typical for individual national codes, etc. Scia Engineer offers built-in design and checking functions for numerous national and international codes of practice.

Interoperability Successful, economical and efficient realisation of a construction project requires effective cooperation of all parties involved: architects, structural engineers, design professionals, facility managers. The data each profession needs are partly unique, but a certain amount of data is shared by all parties. And the key prerequisite is that these data are shared smoothly and without losses.

BIM. Multi-discipline coordination Scia Engineer represents a compact BIM solution whose “True Analysis” feature makes it possible to handle both types of data. The structural model stores the architectural data (shared with other applications) necessary for drawings. The analytical model contains information required for calculations and design (unique Scia Engineer data). Moreover, the sophisticated update function in Scia Engineer moves the ordinary import/export capabilities to a new dimension with its capability to merge together analytical models from two separate projects or combine the analytical model processed in Scia Engineer with a structural model modified in an external application.

All kind of structures in various sectors

• Buildings: apartments, high rise buildings, housing, offices, roof systems, curtain walls, glass structures, winter gardens… • Infrastructure: bridges, train stations, airports, car parks, stadiums, theatres… • Industrial buildings: portal frames, storage buildings, maintenance workshops… • Mechanical industry: pressure vessels, pipelines, load bearing structures… • Environmental: water treatment and soil purification plants, containment vessels, tanks… • Harbour construction: quays, lock doors, shutters… • Prefab concrete structures: plate decks, slabs, walls, girders and columns... • Specials: transport installations, plants, cranes, masts, towers, scaffolds, stairs and other structural parts... • Soil-structure interaction, underground structures: tunnels, excavations, metros...

Scia Engineer is an ideal tool for calculations in 1D, 2D, 3D or 4D! Finite Element Method. Behind the scenes In the early days of computer aided calculations of structures the finite elements used for the analysis were at the centre of attention. The users had to be experts in the finite element method in order to perform accurate calculations. Generation of the finite element mesh was either a completely manual process or, at best, a semiautomatic procedure that required intensive cooperation on the side of the user. Nowadays, the analytical method itself is integrated deep in the CAE systems and unless there is a special need, the users are not bothered with the finite elements at all. Instead, they work with structural elements like columns, beams, slabs, walls, etc. The finite element mesh is generated behind the scenes and the calculated results are presented on the structural elements.

Optimisation. Another leap forward What has also changed over time is the type of results that are expected by engineers. In the past, deformation and internal forces in nodes and elements of the finite element mesh were enough. Today, the user expects all imaginable types of results including code checking and optimisation. Scia Engineer comes with a sophisticated “Autodesign” feature. A particular member of the structure can be optimised inside the code-checking function. Alternatively, the structure as a whole can be optimised for strength-and-stability or fire resistance of members or for capacity of bolted connections. And finally, a model can be parameterised and optimised for the selected parameter.

Editions Choose the one that suits you best! Scia Engineer is a versatile CAE system that provides users with enormous functionality. It stands to reason that not everyone needs everything. Therefore, Scia Engineer is offered in three Editions tailored for the needs of specific groups of users. Each Edition offers a set of modules that are typical for the target group of users. A higher Edition is always an extension of the lower Edition. Moreover, any Edition can be extended by separate additional modules. Each Edition is provided in one language for user interface and printouts and with one technical code for code-checking according to user’s preference.

Concept Edition This basic Edition is aimed at engineers who are modelling and analysing common structures made of steel or concrete or another material. It is the best choice for daily work. Tools for effective preparation of printouts with tables and pictures and modules for code-checking according to the preferred national code are included. “Active Document” ensures that the printouts are always up-to-date, even after significant modifications of the model.

Professional Edition This second Edition is ideal for experienced structural engineers who deal with more complex projects. The cooperation with colleagues from other professions involved in the construction process is smooth thanks to included BIM and Workgroup toolbox. This Edition is suitable for projects that require nonlinear, dynamic or stability calculation or where fire resistance must be checked. Steel connections can be designed and checked. General arrangement drawings and detail drawings of connections accompany the impressive 3D visualisation in the engineering report. “Round-Trip Engineering” with Allplan, direct link with Tekla Structures © and certified IFC 2x3 interface facilitate an effective communication with a whole range of third-party CAD/CAE software.

Concept, Professional or Expert Edition... Expert Edition The Expert Edition provides an uncompromising solution for experts who design the most challenging structures and who need an adequate tool. This Edition is a must for engineers who work with prestressed concrete, who need to analyse individual stages of the construction or who must scrutinise time-dependent behaviour of structures.

Additional Modules A set of additional modules complements the capabilities of the Editions. Available are modules for the design and code-checking of aluminium structures, composite structures, hollow-core panels, pipeline systems, steel masts, etc.

Concept Edition For daily work the Concept Edition of Scia Engineer is the best choice! The Concept Edition attracts engineers modelling and analysing common structures made of steel or concrete or another material. For daily work the Concept Edition of Scia Engineer is the best choice. It is design software whose quality will support engineers in convincing construction owners and authorities.

Modeller The modeller offers capabilities for input and effective editing of straight or curved beam members and plates, walls and shells. The geometry is stored using the unique “True Analysis” technology that stores both structural model (suitable for drawings) and analytical model (required for calculations and code-checks). Communication with third-party software is made through common file formats such as IFC, DWG, DXF, VRML. Easy-to-make printouts with tables, pictures and “Active document” feature that automatically re-generates the documentation after any modification, clearly describe the defined model and present the obtained results.

Loads Not only geometry, but also other data of the analytical model are input effectively. Boundary conditions, loads and other types of data that are necessary for the calculation are defined using intuitive functions. Automatic generators are available for more complex loading conditions, such as plane-load distributed to load-bearing beams or wind and snow load.

Professional Edition This Edition is for engineers with higher demands... The Professional Edition is for engineers having higher demands in terms of analysis, design and BIM. It extends the modelling capabilities of the Concept Edition by, for example, a general crosssection with the shape defined by the user. Steel designers obtain a powerful tool for design of steel connections including the ability to generate drawings of connection parts.

Steel connections and drawings The Professional Edition includes the module for design and code-checking of steel connections with endplates, bolts, stiffeners and welds. A special wizard for preparation of detail drawings of the connections together with general arrangement drawings of the whole structure contribute to the impressiveness of the 3D visualisation of the project in the engineering report.

Parametric input “Parametric Modelling” applicable to any part of the model is convenient for engineers who often work on similar types of structures because typical parts of structures or even whole buildings can be stored as templates and re-used later with different dimensions, cross-sections, material grades, etc. Parameters also allow for effective optimisation of the shape and dimensions.

The Professional Edition contains a BIM Workgroup toolbox. BIM This Edition contains a BIM Workgroup toolbox, enabling exchange of models with other software packages. The Professional Edition includes intelligent member recognition, powerful “Structure2Analysis” conversion, automatic alignment and other functions. Two-way “Round-Trip Engineering” with Allplan makes the exchange of data very comfortable and easy. The certified IFC 2x3 interface opens doors to a whole new dimension of communication. A special link module is available for the exchange of data with Tekla Structures ©. Effective teamwork is supported by a sophisticated Update module that can take data from two sources (either two Scia Engineer projects or one Scia Engineer project and one structural model read from CAD software), compare them, highlight differences and merge together.

Advanced analysis This Edition allows for a whole set of advanced types of calculation. Stability analysis is applicable to structures that may fail due to buckling. Advanced options in non-linear analysis allow for the calculation of 2D members that are capable of resisting only compression forces, for example brick walls. Non-linear springs and gaps between individual structural members can be taken into account as well. For projects where dynamics play important role, this Edition offers the calculation of natural frequencies and modes and analysis of the response to harmonic and seismic load. Especially engineers dealing with transportation structures will welcome the ability to analyse mobile loads.

Design The design of steel structures includes fire resistance checks and plastic analysis. The fire resistance checks are also available for concrete structures.

Expert Edition The Expert Edition extends the Professional Edition. The Expert Edition extends the Professional Edition and addresses the most demanding users. It comes with highly advanced calculation modules for slender and suspended structures and for structures sensitive to the construction process. This Edition provides design tools for precast and bridge industries.

Modelling The modelling capabilities are extended by intelligent detection of conflicts between structural entities. Both the geometric entities (beams, slabs) and reinforcement bars are tested for possible collisions.

Loads Advanced functions for input of mobile loads and train loads suit engineers who must take into account the loads due to traffic.

Analysis The Expert Edition is capable of performing such advanced types of calculation as soil-structure interaction, analysis of membranes and cables, nonlinear stability, friction springs. Bridge designers in particular will be pleased by linear and nonlinear construction stage analysis and time dependent analysis.

Design The Expert Edition provides a world of design power for pre-tensioned and post-tensioned pre-stressed concrete with modelling of strand patterns, input of post-tensioned tendons, time-dependant analysis determining creep, ageing, relaxation, losses and with code-checks according to the appropriate code.
