Welcome to Fernie (Ȼaqahak)

With each day, we become more grateful for the opportunity to live, work, recreate and visit within the Qukin ʔamakʔis, the unceded traditional territory of Yaqit ʔa·knuqⱡi’it. This beautiful valley is special to all who spend time here, past, present and future and we are continuing to learn how to better care for and protect these natural spaces that provide for us.

During your time here, you may experience a unique energy… whether immersed in nature, exploring boutique shops and restaurants, spending time with friends and family around a fire, feeling the cold, white powder hit your face, or taking in a cultural event or activity. It’s all around you, as it’s found not only in the landscape but in the people. It’s this perfect balance of individuals who grew up here and are dedicated to continuing to protect and enhance a home they’ve known a lifetime, individuals who happened upon

the Kukin ʔamakʔis (Land of the Raven) and knew it was somewhere they needed to be and contribute towards, and the natural landscapes, waterways and animals within this area that bestow on us all a bounty to be respected.

We hope you truly enjoy every moment, and this guide helps you in the process.

Sukiⱡq̓ukni kinwakiⱡ Kukin ʔamakʔis!

Ktunaxa have called the Elk Valley home for tens of thousands of years, using the area for living, hunting, and fishing, as a path to access buffalo and to get coal to make their fire as they travelled throughout their homelands - Kukin ʔamakʔis, which is Land of the Raven. As you look around you, the forest is very dense and referred to as Ȼaqahak (Fernie).

As you travel throughout these homelands take special note of the unique landscape.

Fix Tips on a Meaningful Fernie Experience

Learn about our community and its history.

From the Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it who originally lived, fished, hunted and travelled through this vast region, to new settlers interested in the resources available here, to the changing economic base and diverse population we know today. Taking the time to learn can lead to a different level of appreciation. A good place to start is the Fernie Museum and visiting tobaccoplains.org to learn about our local Ktunaxa community. Also, consider downloading the First Voices app.

Enjoy the trails, then pay it back.

Purchase a Fernie Trails Pass (weekend options available), a Fernie Nordic Membership (day passes available), donate to a club (Coal Creek Heritage Society),

send a message of appreciation to a business or organization that provided the opportunity (Fernie Trails Alliance, Fernie Alpine Resort, Fernie Golf Club, City of Fernie) – expressing gratitude is contagious.

Attend an event.

Whether it is a jam-packed Ghostrider Hockey game at the Fernie Memorial Arena, a film festival taking place at the Vogue Theatre, an exhibit opening at the Arts Station or Fernie Museum, or a live music act at the Griz Bar or in town, these experiences are where you’ll be elbow to elbow with the people who live and work in Fernie, and guess what… they likely have some pro tips on tomorrow’s powder stashes.

Try something new to you.

Did you know there are many places to ice skate outdoors in Fernie? Yes, there is the outdoor rink by the Aquatic Centre, but there are also frozen bodies of water in or near town that can be a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Have you tried fat biking? What about curling – one of Canada’s National pastimes? When is the last time you went sledding? Get out there, and out of your comfort zone, it will feel amazing.

Share it with your kids.

Demonstrate and talk about what it is like to immerse yourself in a new community and new experiences, to be respectful and appreciative of those helping to make this time special and unique, to support a community through giving back and being kind.

Chris Ebbern

FERNIE FREESTYLE

I was a late bloomer getting into the ski industry as I played competitive hockey until I was 18. After hockey and finishing high school I packed my bags for the mountains and didn’t look back. I ended up in Jasper for two seasons before I made my way to Fernie in 1999-2000. From there I started spending the Canadian summers in Australia at Perisher and winters in Fernie where my ski/coaching career took off.

I got into competitive park skiing while in Australia and continued it over in North America. While in between comps I taught and coached skiing throughout BC. I was the 2001 Rip Curl Freeski Pro Overall Champion and competed in Planet X-Games and US Opens over my career in Slopestyle, Halfpipe, Big Air and Rail Events. I did a few Big Mountain events as well when my schedule would allow.

In 2011 after my competitive days were behind me, I took over Fernie Freestyle for the first time and ran the club for five years before moving up to the Alberta Provincial Park and Pipe Team for another five years. While there I helped get multiple athletes to the National Team and in 2020 lead Team Canada to the Youth Olympics and helped take home the only gold medal for Canada in Halfpipe for those games. Now, with two young kids of my own, I’ve come back full circle to Fernie and was lucky enough to take over the club again two years ago as the Program Director/Head Coach.

I’m very lucky to get paid to do what I love and to see athletes reach their potential and achieve their dreams. Having an opportunity to ski and travel are the best parts of the job. The industry has changed in many ways from my competition days with much more education for coaches such as courses and facilities for athletes. It has become a year-round process to safely develop an athlete's skills, starting on the trampoline building all the way up to hitting World Cup jumps or ripping a World Cup Mogul course. Progression Air Bags have made a massive difference for athlete safety and development with clubs all over Canada and the world investing in them. One of Fernie Freestyle's

main goals is to purchase and use one in the valley, both on snow and during the offseason to help develop local athletic talent and keep the costs as low as we can for families wanting to get into the sport.

In the future I see skiing growing as a sport with athletes having solid pathways to the top with the Olympics being the cream of the crop as well as IFSA Big Mountain world tour. My passion is helping our coaches and athletes achieve their goals and dreams in the valley and beyond.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Fun.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Check the snow report with my coffee and convince my wife to watch the kids while I go skiing.

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. The air is crisp and the snow is deep.

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Winter, go skiing! Summer, go to the south country and hit the lake.

RECREATION

Adventure… probably what originally inspired our visit and have us planning our next before we’ve even left. For many, it’s part of what made us decide to call it home. What is so distinct in Fernie is the ease with which you can escape into the mountains. Trails are minutes from any doorstep. Epic skiing, whether lift, cat or self-accessed, just a quick drive from town. Because of this, we are able to stack our days. Ski in the morning, rejuvenate in the afternoon, wine and dine in the evening. You might even witness a chairlift meeting in action, because on a powder day, we try to work and play.

Winter Biking: The New Kid on the Winter Activity Scene

Winter biking is the ‘new’ kid on the winter activity scene. This sport is trending more than ever because it is so enjoyable and such an easy way to explore our winter wonderland. Winter biking provides a glorious way to slow down a little and see the beauty of a snowy landscape. Whether you put studded tires on your mountain bike or ride a Fat Bike, winter biking is fun. That is, if the conditions are right. Fernie offers a wide assortment of winter trails that are groomed regularly.

What to Wear

Layer, layer, layer is the key to enjoying this winter exercise. You will be surprised by how much biking in cold weather increases body heat. Be ready to shed a layer on the climb and put a layer on for the descent. A thin neck tube (aka a neck gaiter) can cover the ears, neck, face and provide a thin layer of protection against the elements. Thin breathable baselayers and a midlayer. Wear a thin base layer under bike pants, Nordic pants or any flexible pants that have some stretch. For boots any winter boots or hiking boots will work but if you get into winter biking invest in a pair of fatbikingspecific boots. When the temperatures get really cold, use heated socks or foot

warmers to keep the chill out. Try an active thermal glove to avoid getting the gloves damp with heat or invest in a set of bar mitts for additional protection against the elements.

What To Ride

The key to a good ride (and good trail etiquette) is to only ride a trail when it is rideable (so you don’t leave deep tire ruts). Trail conditions do vary considerably based on recent weather, temperature and grooming. The condition of the trails can be checked on TrailForks, Facebook bike pages or stop into one of the local bike shops for an updated trail status.

If you are just beginning your journey with winter biking, check out the 'Town Loop' which goes along the river north of the golf course, by Maiden Lake, to the boat launch or the Montane trail network. If you are an intermediate or advanced winter rider, check out Ridgemont and the Fernie Ridge trail network or the groomed multi-use trails at Fernie Alpine Resort. Depending on conditions, Deadfall Downhill, Phat B to Red Sonja or Black Betty, and Contra-Trail Dogs offer more challenging options.

Cindy Sleeman is an avid mountain adventurer, during every season, and enjoys getting people together to celebrate whether it’s hiking, biking, or skiing.

Fernie Golf Course

Managed by the Fernie Nordic Society with a membership needed for access, this area provides roughly 8km of relatively flat track-set groomed trails close to town. The Golf Course is a great place for families and beginners to try out the sport, for intermediates to work on technique, and for a quick lap if short on time. No dogs are permitted on these trails, there is 4km of Fernie Dike trail adjacent to the golf course also groomed where dogs are permitted.

Montane Fernie

Also close to town, Montane offers 10kms of designated Nordic trails that include both beginner and intermediate terrain. Another great place for those new to the sport to explore and learn, and for those keen for a longer ski, to head up to the Montane Hut and enjoy the view. Dogs are welcome on these trails. This area is managed by the Coal Creek Heritage Society.

Elk Valley Nordic Centre

Managed by the Fernie Nordic Society with a membership needed for access, the Elk Valley Nordic Centre offers fun, challenging well-maintained intermediate trails with some elevation, as well as an area dedicated to the younger cohorts and those learning. With roughly 10km of track-set groomed trails, this area can also be connected to Fernie Alpine Resort trail for those staying at the hill or those looking to connect for a longer ski.

On Saturday nights, Ski Under the Lights from 6-8pm January through March!

Fernie Alpine Resort

Managed by the resort and free for public use, these track-set groomed trails are accessed from Parking Lot 4 with a short loop, medium loop, and longer loop available, with the full loop roughly 9km in length with some elevation gain. Dogs are welcome here, and these trails are multi-use so you may see runners, fat-bikers and snowshoers.

Additionally, the City of Fernie maintains sections of the City trails, easily accessed from town and connecting some Nordic areas, and Island Lake Lodge allows Nordic skiing on their lower road. For the full scoop on all winter grooming available this season, pick up a free winter trail map at gear shops in town or the Visitor's Centre.

Krista Turcasso is Finnish, so of course she grew up Nordic skiing! With the abundance of quality grooming available in Fernie, she took up skate skiing and it has added to her appreciation of winter.

Winter Running 101

Winter in Fernie is a little long and somewhat variable, so it’s not a bad idea to have a few other activities up your sleeve, to keep the wheels moving. Netflix and naps don’t count, although they are the perfect reward after a nippy, winter trail run. Below are a few tips on the what, where, how and perhaps why, the Fernie trail running scene keeps trotting all year long.

What gear do you need to enjoy a winter trail run? Luckily unlike many Fernie sports, trail running, regardless of season, doesn’t require a ton of expensive gear, although there are a few key items which are a must, and some which will greatly increase your enjoyment. On the must list, ensure you have layers, and lots of them; gloves, buff, and toque; trail shoes with good grips and warm socks; plus, if you’re going after work, a headlamp

If you find yourself quite taken with this peaceful if sweaty way to spend an evening, it’s highly recommended to get some studded trail shoes. Both Salomon and IceBug have great options – and while not cheap, they’re great bang for your buck and will keep you upright for a few winters before they wear out.

Now, where to run? There are a few great options to choose from. Montane and Ridgemont are the general go-to areas, to enjoy a winter trot. The multi-use trails up at Fernie Alpine Resort are great when

hardpacked and are groomed regularly – just be sure to avoid the Nordic track-set. The Provincial Park can sometimes be a good option, based on the snowpack. While the dike trail (Town Loop) in Fernie is a great, flatter loop.

What’s good trail etiquette? First up, adhere to all signage and on-trail directions. Some trails are multi-purpose, while others are Nordic only. Secondly, be aware. If you see fresh grooming, it’s best to pick an alternative route, so as to let the grooming set and firm up. Once spring is in sight, it definitely gets a little more challenging for everyone to enjoy the trails, so pick your route and time of day accordingly. If you’re sinking, it’s no fun for anyone, so try to head out first thing, or later in the day.

Grab the snowshoes! If the conditions aren’t playing ball, or the Fernie factor has arrived, grab the snowshoes and head out for a stomp. A perfect way to set things up and pack things down for the trail using community.

Looking for a trail buddy? Panic not. There are other nutty trail runners out there, keen to run year-round. Stag Leap Running Co. Run Club continues through the winter, Thursdays at 6pm – so be sure to follow on socials to find weekly meeting locations and proposed routes. Better yet, Run Club Pub Club is a legitimate thing.

Running with dogs? Goes without saying, but be sure to pick-up after them, keep them on leash around other trail users, and watch out for skiers and bikers.

Abi Moore operates Stag Leap Running with her husband, Mike. For more information on weekly Run Club, or to find other trail runners, head to stagleaprunning.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram. It’s free, fun and a great addition to your winter. Also, consider purchasing a Fernie Trails Pass to support trail maintenance, development and access - fernietrailsalliance.com/getinvolved/trails-pass.

Backcountry Safety Know Before You Go

Anyone visiting Fernie during the winter will be drawn to the amazing backcountry, whether on skis/snowboards, snowshoes or a snowmobile. While the experience can be one of the highlights of your visit, once you set foot outside controlled areas (essentially Fernie Alpine Resort), you expose yourself to substantial avalanche risk.

Fernie’s legendary deep powder and steep mountains can be fatal if not approached with respect.

HOW TO STAY SAFE

It’s puking big fat white flakes and forecast to last all night - you want to head out for some fresh turns in the backcountry. Take some precautions before you go:

CHECK THE WEATHER REPORT

Maybe it’s going to warm up and howl with rain - not a good time to be in the backcountry.

CHECK THE AVALANCHE CANADA WEBSITE

(AVALANCHE.CA)

Make sure you know the avalanche risk in your area. Moderate your terrain choice accordingly.

CHOOSE YOUR PARTNERS WELL

Not that drunk at the bar shouting about secret stashes. Make sure the people you head out with have similar objectives, risk appetite and fitness. Decide who’s in charge and what “go/no-go” criteria you have for the day.

GET TRAINING

Are you an expert? No, but really? Your friend just got buried. What are your next steps? Not sure? Sign up for one of many courses offered throughout the season – you can never know too much!

PRACTICE YOUR SKILLS

Fernie Search and Rescue and Fernie Alpine Resort have teamed up to install a stateof-the-art avalanche rescue training area. Head to the ski hill and practice your rescue skills at the Transceiver Training Area off the Timber Chair.

TELL SOMEONE WHERE YOU’RE GOING

Fernie Search and Rescue’s catchment area is some 4,000 square kilometers. If you’ve left a detailed itinerary with someone who knows when you were due back, then we have a good idea of where to start looking if you don’t come back.

TALK TO SOME EXPERTS

Check in with Ski Patrol at Fernie Alpine Resort for the most up-to-date snowpack and backcountry assessments. Many of the patrollers also volunteer for Fernie Search and Rescue.

HAVE AN EMERGENCY PRE-PLAN

The best plans in the world can go wrong. An injured partner, an avalanche, broken equipment. It’s going to happen at some

point – what are you going to do about it? Who are you going to call? How are you going to call them? Does anyone know where you are and when to call if they don’t hear from you? How long can you survive while waiting for help? Do you have any first aid skills?

THINGS TO TAKE WITH YOU

You’ve done your pre-trip checks, left your itinerary with someone in town and you’re ready to go. Your pack weighs more than your house, and you’re going to be hauling it uphill all day. You pull everything out and try to work out what you can leave at home.

Here’s our Top 10 items that need to stay in that pack:

TRANSCEIVER

Have one and know how to use it (and wear it, don’t put it in your pack). Make sure your buddy knows how to use theirs, as well. If you get buried, he/she’s the one looking for you. After 15 minutes under the snow, your chances of survival fall by about 90%, so a practice might be a good thing. Check those batteries as well.

SHOVEL

Get a good quality shovel, preferably not plastic, and know how to use it in hard postavi snow.

PROBE

It’s #3 of the Big Three with the two above. Practice using it.

FIRST AID

At least a minimum

amount to cover minor injuries. Throw some means of lighting a fire in as well, you should be able to survive the night in any conditions with a big fire.

EXTRA CLOTHING

More people than you might think have spent an unexpected night out in winter around Fernie. That extra fleece could make the difference. Also keep a thermal wrap in your pack. They weigh nothing.

NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT

Everything looks the same in the snow, so it’s easy to get lost. GPS is great, but the cold kills the batteries, so take and know how to use a compass as well.

FOOD AND DRINK

Throw a bit extra in just in case the trip ends up longer than expected.

TOOLS

At least enough to make sure you can fix a binding if it breaks. Walking in waist-deep snow is no fun!

COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT

Cellphones work in plenty of places, and they are the communications equipment most people will have. Coverage is poor, however, as soon as you leave the valley.

PLB

A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) can send a GPS location to emergency services when things go wrong and there is no cell coverage. The vast majority of SAR responses in the Fernie area involve a PLB of some type (SPOT, InReach, Zoleo). The devices and their batteries are also much more durable than a cell phone.

Above all, have fun, play safe and we’ll see you out there.

Fernie Search and Rescue is a wilderness emergency response group tasked by the provincial government to offer assistance to those who find themselves in difficulty in the backcountry. In the summer this includes bikers, hikers and hunters who may find themselves lost or injured away from urban areas. In the winter the focus moves to assisting snowmobilers, skiers and other winter recreationalists who get into trouble in Fernie’s vast backcountry areas.

Lindsay Reynolds

Three Sisters Day Spa

I was fortunate to take part in a Cosmetology Apprenticeship back in 2007. We briefly touched on Esthetics during this program and it immediately drew me in. After a quick trip to Toronto to meet an Aveda salon owner and talk shop, I was eager to train with Aveda and hooked on the idea of finding my own spot in this amazing industry.

I moved out west in the summer of 2008 and spent the next few years taking in the mountain lifestyle. I decided to move to Vancouver Island to complete my Esthetics certificate and graduated from the Aveda Institute Victoria in 2011 as a Certified Esthetician. I gained experience over the few years that followed before taking the next big step in opening Three Sisters Day Spa. And now here we are. We just celebrated our eighth year in business!

I have always loved working with people, and every day is a little bit different at the spa. New and existing clientele to see, a variety of treatments to offer and a truly amazing team of dedicated professionals to work with- it’s a great mix.

The health and wellness industry, specifically the “beauty” industry side of things is everchanging, evolving and growing fast. Skin and body care have become very inclusive and appealing to everyone across the gender spectrum. Our industry has become a very sought-after career route as well. It is rewarding, fulfilling and keeps you on your toes!

I hope to see this sector continue to bloom and to welcome everyone and anyone to wind down, take some time for themselves and schedule some “me time.” And for those who are interested in becoming a part of health and wellness, there is a niche for everyone.

Being able to work in Fernie and call it my home is a bit like a dream. Downtown Fernie before 9am is quite possibly my favourite

time of day- everything is just starting to come alive for the day ahead. I can arrive to work in under five minutes, have some of the best conversations outside of the shop, and well… the views! Fernie really does look like a postcard.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Inviting

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Coffee and watch the snow fall. Take off for a walk or x-country ski when possible!

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. There is something for everyone. For those who don’t take part in winter outdoors, you can still enjoy Fernie’s other amenities. Shops, restaurants, art, theatre… spa!

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Enjoy the pace of life here. Walk downtown, take in your surroundings and just settle in.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Recreation and rejuvenation go hand in hand. With such an active community, it should come as no surprise that there is an abundance of offerings in Fernie to help you maintain balance and recharge after mountain adventuring – from acupuncture to yoga, physiotherapy to spa treatments, barre classes to hair appointments. It’s all available right here and like its recreational counterpart, you’ll find the health and wellness services world-class.

Winter Yoga Sequence

Here is a simple yoga sequence to build strength and stretch your important muscles before or after a fun day of skiing or snowboarding, or for any winter sports recovery.

It's always great to start your warm-up with moving your spine in all directions. If you are just beginning, move slowly and honour how your body feels. If you can only hold a posture for one breath, start there and work towards 5 or 10 breaths.

1. Cat and Cow

From all fours, inhale as you lift your tailbone and head allowing your belly to drop. Keep your elbows straight and press through your palms. As you exhale, round your back like a cat, allow shoulder blades to spread as you release tight muscles of the upper back and neck. Tuck your tailbone and bring your chin towards your throat. To work on a strong core, try extending alternate arms and legs and hold for 5 cycles of breath, then switch sides.

2. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

From tabletop slowly press into your hands and lift your hips up and back pressing your tailbone up to lengthen the spine, hands shoulder width and feet hip width apart. Keep a slight bend in your knees, work towards straightening your legs and dropping heals with

time. Rotate shoulders externally, upper arms moving away from the ears. Reach the crown of your head towards the floor. Tuck your chin, look towards the navel or between your ankles. Stay here for 5-10 breaths, pulling your navel towards your spine.

3. Crescent Lunge (Ashta Chandrasana or Anjaneyasana)

From Downward-Facing Dog, step your right foot between your hands. Bend your front knee 90 degrees, aligning your knee over your heel. Lower left knee to the ground, or for a more active posture keep the back leg straight on ball of your foot. Draw your left hip forward as you press your right hip back, squaring your hips. Inhale, sweep arms overhead and draw your tailbone towards the floor. Spin your hands so your palms face each other and tilt your gaze up between your palms. Hold for 5 breaths.

Lower hands down on either side of your right foot, engage core by pulling navel

towards the spine. Anchor through your left palm and rotate the chest to the right lifting your right arm up towards the sky. Keep your spine long by bringing your chin towards your shoulder. Aim to stack your shoulders reaching upwards and allow the gaze to follow. Hold for 5 breaths and then return to Crescent Lunge.

4. Warrior 3 (Virabhadrasana III)

From Crescent Lunge, bend into your right knee as the torso folds forward

across the top of the right thigh. Reach your arms forward, or for a more stable balance, bring your arms by your side palm facing down. Keep the chin tucked in and the spine long. Gradually lift the left foot off the floor until the leg is fully extended behind you. Rotate the outer edge of the left thigh downward, so hips remain level with the floor and the sacrum is fairly flat. Work on straightening the right leg, pressing into the big toe and spreading the sole of the foot wide. Stay for 5 breaths.

5. Extended Side Angle Pose (Parsvakonasna)

From Warrior 3, bend the standing knee and slowly lower the left leg back landing in crescent lunge. Externally rotate your left leg, planting your left foot parallel to the back of the mat for Warrior 2, keeping a 90-degree bend in the right knee with toes pointed forward. Exhale and side bend the upper body to bring the right ribs towards the thigh. Place your right hand on the floor beside the pinky toe or onto a block. Rotate the abdomen and chest toward the sky, press into the outer edge of the left foot. Extend the upper left arm over the ear palm facing the floor. Breathe for 5 breaths, then slowly return to Warrior 2, Crescent lunge and flow through Chaturanga, Upward Facing Dog and back into Downward Facing Dog. Repeat sequence on the left side.

6. Chair pose (Utkatansana)

From Downward Dog, walk or step feet to the top of the mat, inhale half lift and lengthen the spine bringing hands to shins, and exhale fold forward releasing your neck, crown of the head pointed towards the ground. Inhale and rise to standing (Tadasana/Mountain Pose). For beginners, start with feet hip width apart otherwise try with feet together, big toes touching and heels slightly apart. Inhale and raise arms overhead with an internal rotation so palms face each other. Exhale, bend your knees and sit back so that thighs are parallel to the floor. Shift weight towards your heels,

tuck the tailbone and engage your lower abdominal muscles. Breathe for 5 cycles.

From chair pose, stand tall in Tadasana. Flow through a Sun Salutation, finishing in Downward Facing Dog. Stay here for 5 breaths. Lower onto your knees for Child's Pose (Balasana), sitting on your heels with your forehead on the floor and arms reaching forward, palms rolling up for 10 breaths.

7. Bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana)

From child's pose come to seated and lie down on your back. Start with knees bent, feet hip width apart, toes pointed forward. Press strongly into feet, inhale and lift your hips. Bring the palms of the hands together and press the pinky side of the hand down and lift the hips higher to roll to the tops of the shoulders. Hold for 5-10 breaths. Slowly lower hips to the mat. From here finish with a gentle supine twist, bending knees to a 90-degree angle and allowing them to fall to one side with arms in

a "T" position, the head turning to the opposite direction of the knees, pause for 5-10 breaths on each side.

8. Corpse Pose (Shavasana)

Allow time for rest and relaxation by lying on your back for several minutes in Corpse Pose. Bring your legs wide on your mat and allow arms to move away from your body palms rolled up. Slow down your breathing and visualize the body in a peaceful state with beautiful energy flowing in and out with each breath. This time allows the body to integrate the movements and feel centred for the day, softening the breath and tension held in the body.

Reel Canadian Film Festival

Like many of us I first became involved in the arts and culture scene in Fernie by attending events like Griz Days, the Wednesday Socials, and concerts and art exhibits at the Arts Station. My involvement in the Reel Canadian Film Festival began when some friends asked me to join the Programming Committee. I’ve always enjoyed films and was intrigued by the concept of a festival celebrating Canadian film. I joined the board the following year.

The Reel Canadian Film Festival is unique in that it focuses on films with a Canadian connection and includes full length features and documentaries, shorts, and a young film makers workshop focused on local aspiring film makers.

In January 2021 and 2022 we presented our 13th and 14th annual festivals virtually. It’s been an interesting few years for the film festival business with the move to virtual and hybrid festivals, a trend that is likely to continue.

We really appreciated the access virtual screenings allowed but are looking forward to

returning to an in-person festival which gives us an opportunity to discuss the films and to interact with people involved in the making of films.

The Reel Canadian Film Festival will be held at the Vogue Theatre in Fernie January 27-29, 2023. Check us out at fernielovesfilm.ca or contact us at reelfilmfestival@gmail.com if you are interested in getting involved.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Happy-place.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Head to Cedar Ridge.

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Check out the Elk Valley Nordic Centre.

ARTS AND CULTURE

Fernie continues to raise the bar when it comes to arts and culture. Live music acts whether local or touring through town are impressive, as are the open mic nights and weekly music events at bars and restaurants. Galleries and exhibits are tucked in various corners throughout town, from numerous artist studios to the rotating exhibits at the Arts Station and Museum to restaurants, cafes and shops showcasing local artwork in their establishments. Add to this an historic theatre, multiple film festivals and movie screenings throughout the season, and literary events each month at the Heritage Library, there is truly a cultural scene in Fernie.

Local's Perspective

Brett Galbraith Ski Base

My name is Brett, and I was lucky to grow up in Fernie. My mum worked for Fernie Sports when it was open, so I was always around the store and ski equipment. After moving away, going to school and getting my journeyman ticket, I found myself coming back to the retail environment, but in Canmore where I managed the service and equipment side of a store. Since recently settling back in Fernie, I met Jeff Johnson and had the opportunity to continue to work in the sporting goods industry which I love.

My favourite part about working in retail, especially skis and bikes, is getting to sell fun. I love getting nerdy about gear and sharing that knowledge with other people so they are able to enjoy whatever adventure, trail or slope they're on, that much more. Retail has changed a lot over the last few years. We're seeing more people turn to online shopping and companies are offering direct-to-consumer sales. Customers come into a physical store much more educated on what they’re looking for and may have checked inventory online. Even with these changes, we still see most people turning to their favourite retail stores, like Ski Base, for product advice, and to see, try on and compare products.

I think retail stores will always hold space, especially in outdoor sporting equipment, because people have questions and want to see and feel the products they need to trust on their next adventure. While we offer great advice and product knowledge, we also have plenty of experience on local trails/routes and are eager to share this knowledge in order for people to improve their skills and push themselves in their sport. Being able to work in such a great community and place has been amazing - working so close to all my favourite activities lets me get out and enjoy them every day, even on my lunch break. We're lucky to have the ski hill so close, if there's a good snow day you might even be lucky to start your day a little late to enjoy

some turns, or catch an opening of terrain in the afternoon.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Community.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Make my coffee (and my wife's) and start the car!

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. Everyone in the community lights up and shares the excitement for the outdoors. You feel connected to everyone because we’re all itching for one thing, another powder day.

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Après ski nachos at the Griz Bar

SHOPPING

Typically, shopping is not at the top of our list when travelling. Sure, we tend to want to pick up a few things for those we left behind or to remember the visit by, but it’s not the priority. Well, we apologize as you might find you dedicate some of your time to peruse the many boutiques, galleries and shops that line Second Avenue and the streets just off in the Historic Downtown. Each with its own unique blend of items, including many Fernie-specific products but also a variety of Canadian-made items you’ll be happy to take home. Our favourite aspect of the Fernie shopping experience is the view… it’s as though Fernie Alpine Resort begins at the end of the street, as well as the conveniently placed restaurants and cafés along the way.

Kalina Whitelaw

Miner’s Mud

I am the owner/operator of Miner’s Mud, a coffee stand serving organic, fair-trade coffee and fresh baked goods. I grew up in Nova Scotia where I learned about entrepreneurship, an appreciation for quality ingredients and the value of supporting small business while growing up on my family’s maple syrup farm and restaurant deep in the Maritime sugar woods.

I love hiking, camping, snowboarding, archery - essentially anything outdoors - and being an early riser, great coffee has always been a part of my adventurous lifestyle.

When I moved to Fernie in 2019, I found myself on the hunt for early morning coffee to kickstart my day. I had always thought about opening my own coffee stand, so I decided to make this idea a reality and opened Miner’s Mud in May 2021.

Despite the challenges of being in business during a pandemic, my first year was so amazing because of the incredible support from the community and the connections I’ve made with our customers. I’m inspired by the resilience and creative thinking in the Food and Beverage sector and the businesses who turned challenges into opportunities.

I’m excited to watch this continue to unfold and am proud to be part of such an innovative and dynamic community.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Vibrant.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Make myself a cup of Miner’s Mud and get outside to enjoy it.

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. Everything is so accessible! You can snowboard, cross-country ski, snowshoe and skate all in one day.

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Grab a hot drink, turn off your phone and go for a walk by the river to soak up the Fernie Magic.

FOOD AND DRINK

Before a day of adventure, while out shopping with friends, or after hitting the spa or hill, you will be after a little something to get you going or replenish you to ensure you can do it all again tomorrow. Hip coffee shops, cozy cafés, scrumptious bistros and diners, gastro pubs, fine dining, cuisine from around the world… you want it, Fernie has it. While we wish we could help, it’s up to you to whittle it down this trip. Don’t worry, it will all be here (and maybe more) on your next visit.

Cooking from Your Pantry

I love the concept of cooking from your pantry. It’s a great way to use up those neglected ingredients instead of buying those specialty ingredients for just one recipe.

Cooking intuitively from your pantry, fridge and freezer can help you to create cost effective dishes that will impress your family and friends.

By cleverly using your kitchen finds, you’ll put a flavoursome dinner on the table any day of the week. I encourage ingredient swaps in these two recipes. Yam for squash, sausage for spicy salami etc.

Recipes

Creamy Coconut Sweet yam curry is best served with rice and cilantro. It’s the perfect comfort food after you’ve had a long day on the ski hill but still want to have a healthy dinner on the table.

The combination of sweet potatoes, warming spices, and creamy coconut milk is cozy, a little spicy, and filled with vegetables. Serve this creamy stew over rice and finish with spiced sesame chili oil and cilantro.

Yam and Fennel Curry (8-12 servings)

1 cup onion

3 cloves garlic

2 tablespoons ginger

1 cup celery

2 cups carrot

2 cups fennel

2 cups yam or squash

6 chicken thighs (optional)

2 tablespoons curry powder

2 tablespoons toasted fennel seeds

1 tablespoons ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

2 cans coconut milk

Serve with rice, quinoa or couscous. Heat coconut oil in a large cast iron dutch oven or large pot over medium heat. Add onions. Sauté until translucent. Add ginger, garlic, fennel and chicken (if using). Sauté until lightly brown. Add spices to pan and sauté.

Next, add yams, remaining veggies and sea salt. Pour in coconut milk, reduce heat to medium-low to prevent burning and

cover with a fitted lid. Steam cook for 4 to 5 minutes until tender, stirring once or twice to be sure they’re not sticking to the skillet.

Spicy Braised Eggplant and Noodles (8-10 servings)

2 medium onions 5 gloves of garlic ginger 2 medium eggplant 1 red pepper 500g hot Italian sausage or ground pork 1/2 cups peanut 1 bunch scallion thick rice noodles or udon noodles

Sauce 5 tablespoons gochujang 5 tablespoons hoisin 4 tablespoons miso 4 tablespoons tomato paste 4 tablespoons sesame oil 1/2 cup water 4 tablespoons butter

Follow directions on noodle package and rinse with cold water and store until needed.

Mix all sauce ingredients in a bowl, gradually adding ½ cups warm water, mix until smooth. Score the skin of the eggplant with a pairing knife. Cut in half Lengthways and slice 1/3 inch semicircles and sprinkle with salt salt to remove excess moisture. Pat dry after 5 min.

Heat 3 Tbsp. oil in a large cast iron with a lid, Add onion, sauté until translucent, add garlic and ginger stirring often, until golden, about 2 minutes then add sausages and break into

pieces using the back of the spoon until fully cooked.

Add eggplant and cook for 3 mins. Stir in sauce mixture stirring occasionally, until eggplant are nearly falling apart, 8-10 minutes.

Add noodles, butter. Garnish topped with scallions and peanuts.

Blackstone Bed and Breakfast

Fernie has been home to us for a while now; this is where we first met, got married, and had our two sons. Just as life was settling down, we made the choice to purchase a home that would also provide short term rental opportunities – the Blackstone Bed and Breakfast. This has become a family adventure and an opportunity for us to show others how amazing Fernie is. We pride ourselves in making this space a home away from home and we really enjoy helping our guests create memorable experiences while here.

Purchasing Blackstone immediately meant we were in the accommodation sector, which was a first for us both. It was the fall of 2019, and all of a sudden COVID happened, which was scary both as humans and for running an accommodation business.

It’s been an interesting journey, managing our family, careers and also leaning into a new industry going through a pandemic which has taken consistent on the fly adapting and learning.

As we’re starting to see an increase in travel and more visitors to Fernie, we’d like to continue to see change and more of a return to normalcy. While it has in terms of people are travelling again, the price of travelling is very much not normal.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Community.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Squats and snow blow.

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. Seven-minute charlift waits are frustrating.

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Walk around downtown and soak up the energy.

WHERE TO STAY

Whether a full-service hotel or motel that provides everything you need while visiting Fernie, or you’re after something for the family that’s a bit more flexible, you will find what you’re looking for.

Accommodations at the hill and in town offer a variety of products, so your first decision is where you prefer to be, and from there you can fine-tune your decision… how many rooms? Do you need a kitchen? Would it be convenient to have yard space? Are you after a hot tub? There are lots of options, just remember to look and book early to ensure you secure the place that best suits you and your party’s needs.

Local's Perspective

Megan Shewaga

All In Property Care

My name is Megan Shewaga, and I’m the Operations Manager here at All In Property Care in beautiful Fernie. It is my great privilege to work alongside an incredible team filled with creative, skilled, kind and energetic human beings on some of the most spectacular homes, interesting projects and unique puzzles around town. Doing business in Fernie brings quite a few unique challenges and opportunities, as I’m sure many would agree.

I enjoy the opportunity to work with people from all over the world. Being exposed to new techniques, designs, products, philosophies and experiences so frequently is such a gift. Something I’ve always appreciated about Fernie is the blended community of deeply rooted families with generations of tradition in contributing to and caring for the area, as well as the regular flow of new perspectives and ideas from across the globe. It’s a really fertile environment for learning and growth. The challenges are ones that I’m sure will be no surprise to anyone: expensive everything, limited choices, and extreme weather fluctuations.

While there are some changes in the industry that have been difficult to endure, a positive change is greater collaboration and communication between businesses. Companies that may have once viewed each other solely as competition, now seem to be talking, sharing, and working together. In my opinion, there’s been a noticeable shift in attitude and dynamics. I’m not sure if it’s because of the internet, the pandemic, the economy, or something else, but the “we’re all in this together, how can we help each other do better?” mentality seems to be more widespread and it really makes living and working in a small community so much more enjoyable. It was a real struggle for many businesses to survive the last few years, and I think we are all more sensitive to the challenges we are facing together.

I hope to see this line of thinking become the norm. I’d like more open, honest dialogue,

more creative partnerships, and resource sharing among businesses within the industry and beyond. The phrase “a rising tide lifts all boats” is one that comes to mind. I believe there’s room for all of us to succeed and I would love to live in a community where everyone is thriving. While we all have our own unique struggles, I am always amazed when I speak to others at how many of those struggles are universal, and how much we can all learn from each other. I look forward to a path of continued learning alongside this community, and hope we can work together some day soon!

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Passionate.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Groan…. I’m one of the few weirdos around here that was definitely born in the wrong hemisphere hahaha.

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. The electric currents of excitement that run through the community every time we get a big snowfall are infectious.

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Some activities depend on the season, but dinner at the Himalayan Spice Bistro is a must on ANY good Fernie trip!

REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT

There has been a lot of change the last couple of years, with many choosing to make Fernie their permanent home during and post COVID-19. The trend continues, which has resulted in both real estate and development being in hot demand. Unfortunately, this has also led to a lack of affordability and people being priced out of the market, which is difficult in a town where tourism is a big economic driver and many residing here work in the service industry.

Like many towns across BC, Fernie is going through growing pains with smart development and housing as key challenges and also opportunities.

Local's Perspective

I got into the service industry when I was in high school as my first “real” job and never really left. I think what I enjoy most about it is when you’re able to make someone’s day better by being able to solve their problem and turn their experience into a positive one.

In my 15 years in the industry, I have seen many changes, including the introduction of self-serve stations and, most recently, the pandemic. The last few years have shown us that we crave human interaction, so I hope that the service industry slows down on the progression of technology and keeps an element of people in place.

I feel truly lucky to be able to live and work in Fernie. The sense of community here is amazing! And there are always activities that can be done.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Friendly.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Check the Griz Cam and see how much snow the hill got.

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. It brings people here from all over the world – not only to work but to vacation here as well.

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Take some time to venture on the trails around town, maybe even a snowshoe to the Montane Hut. There’s more to Fernie than just skiing/riding.

SERVICES

Fernie wouldn’t be the community we love so much without the many, many individuals volunteering and working towards its improvement. Each season offers a multitude of events and festivals, many organized by volunteers and all hosted to provide enjoyment to residents and visitors. Throughout your visit, you will meet people who work within this industry who will make your stay one to remember. Take the time to appreciate and recognize these efforts. And if here for a while or returning, consider ways in which you can get involved as it’s not only the best way to feel a part of a community, it can also be the best way to experience it.

NAVIGATION

Navigation is important, both when en-route to your destination and while enjoying your time once there. One of the most attractive features of this mountain town is how close everything is and how quickly you can connect to a city pathway, many following along the Elk River, to get to your destination. Getting to the downtown from most locations takes less than 20 minutes by foot, and often times it’s quicker to bike, walk or run to a trailhead than to drive. Additionally, there are options to get around in the valley from BC Transit to taxis to Health Connections. Grab a map, we promise it won’t take long to figure out what works best for you!
