Local's Perspective

Ski Base

My name is Brett, and I was lucky to grow up in Fernie. My mum worked for Fernie Sports when it was open, so I was always around the store and ski equipment. After moving away, going to school and getting my journeyman ticket, I found myself coming back to the retail environment, but in Canmore where I managed the service and equipment side of a store. Since recently settling back in Fernie, I met Jeff Johnson and had the opportunity to continue to work in the sporting goods industry which I love.

My favourite part about working in retail, especially skis and bikes, is getting to sell fun. I love getting nerdy about gear and sharing that knowledge with other people so they are able to enjoy whatever adventure, trail or slope they're on, that much more. Retail has changed a lot over the last few years. We're seeing more people turn to online shopping and companies are offering direct-to-consumer sales. Customers come into a physical store much more educated on what they’re looking for and may have checked inventory online. Even with these changes, we still see most people turning to their favourite retail stores, like Ski Base, for product advice, and to see, try on and compare products.

I think retail stores will always hold space, especially in outdoor sporting equipment, because people have questions and want to see and feel the products they need to trust on their next adventure. While we offer great advice and product knowledge, we also have plenty of experience on local trails/routes and are eager to share this knowledge in order for people to improve their skills and push themselves in their sport. Being able to work in such a great community and place has been amazing - working so close to all my favourite activities lets me get out and enjoy them every day, even on my lunch break. We're lucky to have the ski hill so close, if there's a good snow day you might even be lucky to start your day a little late to enjoy some turns, or catch an opening of terrain in the afternoon.

Q. If I had to describe Fernie in one word, it would be…

A. Community.

Q. The first thing I do on a powdery morning is…

A. Make my coffee (and my wife's) and start the car!

Q. Winter is a unique time in Fernie because…

A. Everyone in the community lights up and shares the excitement for the outdoors. You feel connected to everyone because we’re all itching for one thing, another powder day.

Q. What is one thing you recommend visitors try or do during their stay?

A. Après ski nachos at the Griz Bar.

SHOPPING

Typically, shopping is not at the top of our list when travelling. Sure, we tend to want to pick up a few things for those we left behind or to remember the visit by, but it’s not the priority. Well, we apologize as you might find you dedicate some of your time to peruse the many boutiques, galleries and shops that line Second Avenue and the streets just off in the Historic Downtown. Each with its own unique blend of items, including many Fernie-specific products but also a variety of Canadian-made items you’ll be happy to take home. Our favourite aspect of the Fernie shopping experience is the view… it’s as though Fernie Alpine Resort begins at the end of the street, as well as the conveniently placed restaurants and cafés along the way.

When I have the opportunity to travel, especially some place unique and special, I make sure to find something meaningful that will help me to remember the moments and memories created and shared. A keepsake, whatever the size or type, can be cherished for years and also can help us to tell our stories. Here are just a few items out there to consider, but we know you’ll find what’s just right for you!

That Classic Fernie Sticker

For your SUV, your gear, your re-usable mug… this is a classic way to show your love and continue to remember your time spent here. The Fernie Visitor Centre has a great collection, as well as various businesses in town including the Ski Base, Ghostrider Trading Post, and Coal Town Goods. Fan of Fernie Alpine Resort, Island Lake Lodge or Fernie Wilderness Adventure? Their stickers are also great options!

Drinkware

Speaking of mugs, are you keen to think of Fernie every time you take a sip of your morning coffee or your après drink of choice? You have options! Fernie Brewing has attractive Mir coffee mugs as well as beer koozies, and branded glassware. Sports Alpine Boutique also has Fernie Alpine Resort branded vessels, and be sure to hit up No3, Ghostrider Trading Post, IGS and Interior Envy for their Fernie-ware.

Comfort Wear

It’s winter and it’s important to be warm and cozy. A comfy sweater is just what you need! Coal Town has popular branded sweaters, as do Fernie Brewing Co., Fernie Distillers, Straightline and Gear Hub. Ski Base is carrying branded and Fernie Griz hoodies, too. Also, keep your feet warm with some Fernie socks - Fernie Distillers, Fernie Brewing and Straightline have popular and stylish options.

Coffee

There is nothing like making a cup of coffee or fresh espresso in your home, and it bringing you right back to an amazing experience you had on vacation! Rooftop Roasters and Beanpod sell their coffee in house, while Fernie Roasting you can purchase online or at The Local Store downtown.

Refreshments

Fernie is home to some talented brewers and distillers, selling their products both inhouse and in stores. FBC products can be found across Canada, but seasonals and special editions may be harder to find! Check out their brewery and see what’s available during your stay.

Another amazing option is Fernie Alpine Springs. They brew a variety of amazing fresh kombucha, and it’s tough to make a decision. We recommend visiting their tasting room before choosing a case to bring home. And of course, don’t miss Fernie Distillers. Stop by, have a tasting and perhaps a cocktail while you choose what to take home.
