A Wedding Story AMANDA AND

DEVO Photographer: Mountain Ash Photography mountainashphotography.blogspot.ca

Amanda and Devo were engaged in June, and wanting a fall wedding but not keen on waiting a year and a half to get married, the

duo began planning the wedding straight

away. With only four months to their wedding day in October, they quickly learned it was not typical. “People look at you like you’re nuts

when you say you need your wedding dress in three months!” says Amanda.

One of the positives of off-season weddings is that vendors are not booked as far in advance.

Amanda and Devo felt that they had ‘lucked

out’ as the Elk View Lodge was available for both the ceremony and reception. With family

and friends coming from all over Canada, it

was important to them to have a facility for the day prior to and after the wedding.

“Because our wedding was taking place over Thanksgiving weekend, we knew we wanted to have a Thanksgiving get together the day

afterwards as well, and the lodge (which is a three day booking) was perfect because our families were able to stay up there with us

and we had more than enough room to have a big potluck gathering on the Sunday evening,”

she says. “It was so lovely to have everyone stay together and get some quality time with them.”

Amanda’s vision for the style of the wedding was casual and classic. Green Petal arranged

bouquets for the bridesmaids and the bride, and to cut costs they made a bulk order of

flowers from them as well, and arranged the centre pieces themselves. “I wanted a fall wedding because the colours are so beautiful

and the colours of the flowers echoed that,” adds Amanda.

The wedding dress was found at a small

boutique in New Westminster. Amanda and her mom were finding it difficult to find what they were looking for in the larger bridal

shops, so decided to change their approach. “The dress fit with my vision of simple but not typical.”

9

Amanda was drawn to the 20’s style finger wave hairstyle, but was worried it wasn’t

an option as she has very straight and fine hair. “Any previous attempts to curl my hair literally fell flat,” she laughs. Fortunately,

Fernie is home to the talented Alanna Laurin of Sparrow for Hair who worked her magic, “and it looked amazing. She’s my hero.”

For makeup, Amanda went with Chantel

Vincent from Freyja which fit with the style of her dress and hair very well. “I’m not a

big makeup person and it felt a little strange having so much on, but it worked, and looking

at the pictures now I’m so glad she did what she did!”

Amanda and Devo felt very fortunate to have

their good friend, Mark Butcher, cater their wedding. Typically, Mark is found preparing

the four-star cuisine at Island Lake Lodge, but it being the off-season made it possible. Mark alongside additional Island Lake cooks, Logan Gaede and Luke McLeod, prepared an

amazing meal for the couple and their guests, with a personal approach. “I’m a vegetarian,

so Mark planned a delicious butternut squash

lasagne with bay leaf cream, and a bunch of delicious salads, and for the meat eaters we

kept it local, with elk contributed by hunter friends.”

For dessert, Amanda’s mom prepared a small cake to cut at the reception, and Sweet Cakes

up, do my hair and makeup, but we also had

a good friend supply the music. Patrick James McIssac, also known as DJ PJ, DJ’d for us, and

absolutely killed it. He played all night long, even though he had to go to his day job the

next morning.” Additionally, the couple had one of their closest friends as a photographer – Jesse Bell of Mountain Ash Photography. “It

made the session so fun and easy. She did an amazing job and I love the photos that she took.”

getting married here was the easiest decision of all.

dance party, it would probably be walking

A Wedding Story TAEGEN AND

DUSTIN Photographer: 6:8 Photography 68photography.com

Taegen and Dustin were so happy to be contacted to share their wedding day with

us. They immediately gushed that their experience in Fernie was fantastic, from the get go.

“Crazy enough, we picked up the Fernie

Wedding Guide in November 2014 while we were there (just over six months prior to our wedding, with nothing yet planned

besides the fact that we knew we wanted it in Fernie) - that’s how we found out about a lot

of the venues and suppliers. We used a lot of tips from it when we were planning our own, so it’s kind of cool to pass it on,” says Taegen.

The first detail the duo knocked off their list was the location for the ceremony. They

were drawn to the mountain setting at

Birch Meadows, and owner/manager Sonya

day very care free as they facilitated a lot

of necessities like taking down chairs and storing them, parking vehicles, keeping the grounds very clean - a herd of elk came

through the ceremony site the morning of the wedding and left a bit of a mess amongst the

site and all of the chairs. Haha, so Sonya and

her husband made sure everything was still in tip top shape after they left.”

For the reception, Taegen and Dustin decided on the Stanford Resort, using the main floor for the dinner, and then adding seating on the upstairs balcony to ensure there was plenty

100 guests, the transition from dinner to the

reception dance party was seamless, helping festivities.

Taegen and Dustin were really after an outdoorsy style wedding, everything that has drawn them to Fernie in the first place.

They included a lot of greens and browns

in their décor and colour scheme and chose flower arrangements with more of a focus on greenery. This theme was carried through

to other details, such as the lace pattern on Taegen’s dress and garter including leaves and flowers, a unique “guest book” made

up of tree branch slices signed by the guests and put together on a frame, and a backdrop

Dustin’s family has been coming to Fernie for

over 20 years. He started bringing me with

him not long after we started dating six years

ago, and we were hooked. We started coming behind the head table made up of wooden pillars. It even transferred to how Taegen had

her makeup done, by Kayla Brunner from Cranbrook – using a natural colour palette.

The couple utilized a lot of local vendors, including Sparrow for Hair, Caked by Ashely out of Sparwood, The Green Petal, Ray’s Music, and photos by 6:8 Photography.

a few times a year, in both summer and winter.

Fernie really doesn’t have a season that isn’t

fantastic. In the summer/spring/fall we like to do hiking, but we’ve also done some white

water rafting, cliff jumping at Silver Springs,

and Dustin has done some paddle boarding on Surveyor’s Lake and downhill biking. In the winter of course we come to snowboard.

Basically, Fernie is our little getaway - being Flatlanders from Saskatchewan, the beauty of it never gets old. We wanted our friends and

The couple shared with us many unique

details, from a sunny wedding during May

in Fernie to family not expected to attend surprising them. But the one that stands out to us is the engagement video Dustin stayed up all night making, just three nights before the

wedding. He had proposed on a hiking trail in Switzerland, and wanted to share with their guests just how magical that moment was. A

videographer by trade, we can only imagine

how impressive this part of the reception was. 13

Thanksgiving weekend, 2014 in Fernie, BC. “We both love the cooler weather and

slower pace of fall in Fernie,” Alanna says, including that the Larch turning colour on the mountains is breathtaking. A bonus to booking a wedding at this time of year is that

it’s a little easier to secure the venue and vendors of your choice.

For the theme, the couple decided on the Roaring 20’s, because they felt this era

embodied a fun, high-spirited vibe while still being elegant.

“Living in Fernie, most of our time is spent

in plaid shirts and toques - it was a great

excuse to bring a bit of glamour to our lives

for a night! I think our guests really enjoyed dressing up, too. There were some great costumes and headpieces,” says Alanna.

The event included 125 guests, many who added days to their weekend in Fernie to enjoy all the town has to offer. While some brought

their bikes or hiking shoes and enjoyed the trails, others spent time on Second Avenue,

perusing the shops and enjoying the patios.

“We had a beautiful, sunny fall weekend. So

many of our guests commented on the great vibe of our little mountain town,” she adds.

Alanna and Shea booked Alpine Lodge for

three days and hosted a BBQ the evening

before the wedding for the added chance of catching up and mingling. Following a more traditional theme, the ceremony was held at

the Anglican Church, followed by a reception at the Fernie Golf Course. At the time, CP Catering was running the venue and working

One of the most magical moments of a wedding is the couple’s song. Having been to many weddings and played at some, I have been brought

to tears by the powerful lyrics and melodies of certain songs while a couple embraces for the first time in the next chapter of their life. I have also grooved along with couples as they have hit the dance floor running at their reception and got the party started with that first song.

Whatever song you choose to walk down the aisle to, sway to, or start the dance party to, you’ll remember it forever. Here are a few great ones to choose from to make the most incredible day of your life even more spectacular. “1,2,3,4” - Feist

Wedding Tips

Behind every bride is a hairstylist wanting to create the perfect wedding style. 2016 brings with it a year of femininity, softness and glamour. Long gone are the days of that perfect smooth up-do. Even when channelling classic and glamorous ladies like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, we’re seeing brides add their own flair. Braids are at an all-

time high in popularity, the fishtail and Dutch braid are being used on their own as the centre piece to fantastic Boho inspired style. And who really said it needs to be any sort of “up-do”

anymore? Many brides are going for the soft beach look.

So many factors go into deciding what hairstyle is right for you, but my first question is

always, “What does your dress look like?”

It’s easy to fall in love with a hairstyle you found on Pinterest or in a magazine, but your dress has to be factored in. There is a reason strapless wedding dresses are always one of the most popular styles. They are so adaptable, making it easier to decide what suits you best when it comes to hair and other fashion choices.

Having your hair styled

But, these are really just guidelines to discuss with your stylist for planning the right look for your wedding day. The overall feel of your wedding also needs to be accounted for as well as what your hair type allows. Don’t let these decisions overwhelm you. Don’t ever be afraid to say what you want, and know your stylist is in your corner. At the end of the day, they want you to feel beautiful.

It is your big day, and all attention is on you! You have your dress picked out, makeup artist and hair stylist booked, but have you

thought about your nails and how this fits into your overall look? Following the latest bridal trends, here are our suggestions for the best bridal nails:

The first thing that you should consider when choosing your nail colour is how you will be matching it to your makeup, gown

and bouquet. When deciding on your overall

look for the big day, consider the rule of

three – if you are doing a bold eye or lip with your make-up, we would suggest matching your fingers and toes with more of a subtle

colour. Traditionally nudes and pale pinks are just enough colour to complement the dress without distracting the eye. Whether it’s a

flick of glitter, gem or a coloured tip, a slight

If you are looking to try something different, ask if a matte top coat is available. This clear

coat can be added to any colour of your choice and it is a simple way to give even the shiniest

of colours a unique matte finish. Try slightly

that you book so that enough time is allocated

Wedding Tips LET THEM EAT CAKE by Amy Cardozo Photos by Crumbs Cakery

Whether your wedding cake is at the top or

bottom of your “to do” list, these tips will help to ensure you have a cake that best represents you on your special day.

1. Choose your cake design after you’ve made your big decisions. I can’t tell you how many

times I’ve had a bride change their design

months later after they’ve purchased their dress or invitations.

2. Spend some time surfing Pinterest and

Google, and bring the pictures of your

favourites to your cake designer and have them help you mix them up to create an original design that is uniquely you!

3. Talk to your cake designer about your

4. Portions determine cake size. Not the other way around. The number of people you

need to serve is more important than how

many tiers you think your cake should have.

If your numbers are low and you envision a five-tier cake, you can make it up with dummy tiers but keep in mind, they aren’t free.

5. Do a tasting consultation! This is a great time to get your groom involved. The last

7. Make sure you like the cake designer’s style.

Buttercream vs. fondant is an important

decision. Some designers are comfortable

working with both mediums. Check their portfolio to ensure their style matches the cake you have in mind.

8. Put some thought into your cake table. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made a gorgeous cake for a bridal couple only

to get to the venue to find the table cloth is wrinkly and the background includes

things such as electrical wires, door frames,

chairs, or even a fire extinguisher. Avoid photo regrets and ensure your tablecloth is ironed and use a simple fabric backdrop to

hide things you don’t want to see in photos with you and your beautiful cake later on.

WEDDING DESIGN ADVICE by Rachel Abdallah 6:8 PHOTOGRAPHY

NICOLE ASHLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

With so many wedding inspiration blogs and magazines out there, it’s no wonder why

some brides have a hard time visualizing their dream wedding. It can be tricky not to get

stuck on current trends, or lost in Pinterest

idea boards. Your wedding design should reflect your relationship, first and foremost.

Treat your wedding as a production. The lights

turn off and the curtains go up as soon as your invitations are sent. Design with different

textures, colours, and heights. Gone are the

days when everything had to match perfectly. Couples are embracing more eclectic designs

using assorted (but coordinating) centre 6:8 PHOTOGRAPHY KRISTI SNEDDON PHOTOGRAPHY

pieces. Your guests’ enjoyment and the visual impact of your décor is key.

Here are some design tips from Mountain

Bride on stationary, lighting, centrepieces, linens and chairs.

SENSATIONAL STATIONARY Most clients put stationary on the back burner. We are here to say, please don’t!

Stunning stationary sets the tone with the first impression - your wedding invitation

pulls together your wedding theme through

the beautiful details in your wedding day

stationary. We recommend having a cohesive design all the way through, not only in the

save-the-date and wedding invitation, but in your seating chart, name cards, table

numbers, programs, menus, signage, and thank you cards.

MAKE BEAUTIFUL LIGHTING A PRIORITY The easiest way to add style to your wedding is through gorgeous lighting!

We love drama! Not with the logistics of course, but with the play in lighting and how

it accentuates different aspects and angles of your décor. Make sure your event is lit

beautifully through both candlelight and ambient room lighting. There is so much

available to rent from gorgeous chandeliers, elegant café lights, and dramatic wall lighting.

Wow your guests by concentrating the light on exquisite centrepieces, spotlight your

first dance, illuminate the elegant head table backdrop, or place lanterns with soft candle light on your patio with breath taking mountain views.

THINK OUTSIDE THE VASE Breaking away from traditional flower vessels is a simple way to change the look of your

flowers, and create a completely unique centre

piece. Think about wooden boxes, geometric vases, pop bottles, teacups, vintage vases, porcelain urns, tin pails, or flower pots. Don’t

be afraid to mix and match from flea market finds to family heirlooms.

Not a flower person? Don’t force it! Create

centrepieces using candles, branches, wheat

grass, herbs, terrariums, and even baskets of fruits and veggies. Incorporating foliage

with unusual texture and shapes can turn

an ordinary arrangement into something gorgeous and unique. We love designing mountain weddings with natural features like

If the chairs at your venue seem boring, there are more options than just covering them with

chair covers. Consider renting Chiavari chairs -

these have become a staple in wedding design. Or, splurge on gorgeous Tuscan Café chairs or

elegant Vineyard chairs. A great chair changes the look of the entire room.

Don’t be afraid to make your wedding design unique. The possibilities are endless, and what

is important is that you and your fiancé bring your personalities and interests through in the

design.

For more design ideas go to their Mountain Wedding Design Inspiration blog at www. MountainBride.com. Rachel Abdallah is a certified wedding planner with Mountain Bride. 6:8 PHOTOGRAPHY

What’s underneath a centre piece is as

important as the arrangement itself. A gorgeous linen has a huge visual impact as

over 80% of your reception room is guest tables. There are many colours, textures and patterns available with linens, overlays, table runners, and napkins.
