Introduction GETTING MARRIED IN

FERNIE, BC

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN FERNIE RAVEN EYE PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO

While Fernie has always been a popular destination for many reasons – from its world class skiing to epic mountain bike trails to an eclectic shopping district in the historical downtown – its popularity as a

wedding destination grows with each year as more people are exposed to its beauty and

continually growing amenities. Whatever the season, this area is an attractive location to

gather with your closest friends and family

for one of the most memorable celebrations of your life.

When you decide on Fernie, so much about

your wedding has already been taken care

of. Imagine coming to Fernie as a guest – the options are seemingly endless. In the summer

months, there is hiking, biking, running,

golfing, fishing, floating… I could go on. In

the winter, Nordic skiing, downhill skiing,

catskiing (yes, a lot of skiing…) sledding, and snowshoeing. Once the day is done, or for

those interested in more relaxation and down time while here, Fernie is home to beautiful

spas, a plethora of dining options, boutique

shops with unique products, cafes serving fine brewed beverages, and much more,

including some of the best service you’ll ever experience.

Knowing your guests are taken care of, it’s time to decide on the core details. From

elegant to casual, indoor to out, seated or

social, it’s really just your choice. And then

there are the vendors. As noted, Fernie is home to many local businesses, all with their

own specialty. Flowers, wedding cakes, bridal party gifts, wedding planners, stylists, décor, and attire for those in attendance.

Fernie has the ability to accommodate your wedding, whatever size, style or taste you are looking for, and with the increase in demand it

is more important than ever to plan ahead of time and book the essentials well in advance.

The following is a complete guide to help you navigate what’s available in this beautiful

mountain setting. Congratulations, we wish you all the best in your planning, event, and all the years to follow.

Visit www.ferniefix.com to keep up to date on events and more that might compliment your celebration in Fernie.

A Wedding Story MAUDE AND

JODY WEINPER Photographer: Matt Kuhn www.MKuhnPhoto.com

A multicultural and streamlined affair, Maude and Jody Weinper’s wedding is

definitely among the most characteristic weddings we have seen. The couple was

currently living in Fernie, and were excited to share this location and their lives with

their friends and family. Which such different backgrounds, a Catholic French-Canadian and

a Jewish Canadian, they were straying from

the norm as everyone else in their families had gone the traditional route.

“The goal was to maximize time spent

followed by a BBQ style dinner catered by

comfortable. We were excited to host a big

her dress off Etsy, and as a chic seamstress

together and with our family. We didn’t want it too formal, and wanted people to be

party that was family friendly, where people could have fun, wear what they felt like wearing, and be social,” says Maude.

They booked a chalet at Fernie Alpine Resort and hosted the entire event there. The

ceremony was in the backyard overlooking

the Lizard Range, which was immediately

the Blue Toque for 80, with additional guests

arriving for the dance. Maude purchased made alterations to create the exact look she was after. These elements along with several

others, such as creating their own invitations

to decorating themselves, ensured Maude and

Jody’s wedding reflected their personalities, which is what they had hoped for.

Q&A WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET MARRIED IN FERNIE? It’s beautiful. Since a lot of our guests are not

from Fernie it was a great way to show them

why we love Fernie and to share our everyday life with all of the out of town guests.

FAVOURITE MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? Taking the photos. It was a beautiful, hot day in Fernie. Matt Kuhn had picked the

locations for us and had the vehicle stocked with beverages, snacks, blankets, and music. We were driving with the windows down, all

done up. It was a highlight. It was a great way to start the day.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE PLANNING THEIR OWN WEDDING DAY? Do what you want to do - it’s your day. That

was our go-to question – are we doing this because we think we should or because we want to?

UNIQUE DETAILS: Rehearsal Dinner: At the Blue Toque for family and friends from out of town. It was

Canada Day, so they were able to watch the fireworks from the deck.

Flowers: Had a friend make wild flower arrangements that fit their style perfectly.

Music: As a local DJ, Jody had a number of

friends come up to specifically play music for their big day. The party lasted into the early hours of the morning…

Cake: Cupcakes by Becky Swanson of Sweet Cakes.

A Wedding Story ANDREA AND

MARK ORMANDY Photographer: Andras Schram www.andrasschram.com

While Andrea and Mark considered many options, including heading south to tropical

destinations, they soon realized it was important for them to have a quintessential

“Fernie” wedding. Their family and friends were travelling from New Zealand and Vancouver, and they really wanted to show

them what Fernie is all about. “To us, that’s Island Lake,” says Andrea.

From the get go, it was going to be a formal

affair particularly with the bridal party. As the details came together, it took on a bit of

a vintage look. The couple was interested in contrasting this classic and elegant style with

the beautiful outdoors. “Having grown up in

70 people were in attendance, with a follow-

both worlds,” she adds.

DJ. “It was great having that second wave of

Vancouver, I wanted to bring together the city

girl with the new Fernie element – the best of Taking this into consideration, when the

weather took a turn for the worse Andrea and Mark were determined to have the ceremony outside at the infamous I Dew Point. “It was

a torrential downpour, and at one point I

thought it was snowing,” Andrea remembers. Literally minutes before she walked down the

aisle it stopped raining and didn’t rain the

remainder of the afternoon. Still, the tents were on standby.

ing 40 bused up from town for the after party

with music provided by Jody Weinper, a local energy,” Andrea says. As you can see from the

stunning photography by Andras Schram, Andrea and Mark succeeded in both their

mission to expose those visiting to the true Fernie experience – from the epic scenery at

Island Lake Lodge to the mountain weather, along with perfectly combining elegance with the outdoors.

Q&A WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET MARRIED IN FERNIE? It’s home for us, and allowed us to get friends and family together where we live and for

them to experience how beautiful our lives are here.

FAVOURITE MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? I would say the photographs taken after the

ceremony and hanging out with the bridal party. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE PLANNING THEIR OWN WEDDING DAY? Start early. We had nine months, but there is so much to do. And please, enjoy the process.

Hair and Makeup: Andrea and local stylists from Sparrow for Hair come up to the lodge to work on the bridal party’s hair, along with a makeup artist.

A Wedding Story MIRANDA AND

JAMES CHARLES Photographer: Raven Eye Photography www.raveneyephotography.com

Fernie wasn’t even a consideration when Miranda and James began planning their

wedding. Miranda was temporarily living just north of Skagway, Alaska, and James was in Prince Rupert, where they were both posted for work. “James’ family is from Manitoba,

mine from Ontario. Most of his friends are in Alberta or on Vancouver Island, and mine in

Ontario and BC. So no matter where we chose to get married, everyone was going to have to travel,” says Miranda.

James was interested in a destination wedding, but was drawn to a beach resort

so he could celebrate for a week with his friends. Miranda, on the other hand wanted

a winter wedding in the mountains. “So we

to compliment traditional ones, and had the

wedding in the mountains, with a beach

the guests and were actually the last ones

compromised (that’s what a marriage is all

about, right?) by settling for a destination honeymoon,” she adds.

They decided on March in Fernie, BC and were happily surprised by beautiful weather and still a lot of snow on the ground. Miranda and

James celebrated with 80 guests along with

their three dogs who stood with James at the

alter. They selected the Elk View Lodge for the ceremony and reception, with amazing views of the Lizard Range and tucked away just

outside of Fernie in its own little mountain paradise. The couple wrote their own vows

friend who introduced them perform the ceremony. “We partied late into the night with

on the dance floor (we really didn’t want the night to end!),” remembers Miranda.

In the end, Miranda and James had the

celebration they were both looking for. James was able to spend a week with his friends and

family celebrating, enjoying all that this town

has to offer from a brewery tour to helicopter rides, and Miranda had her winter wedding in

a mountain destination. And, a honeymoon on the beach was definitely the icing on the cake, so to speak.

WEDDING DAY SHOPPING LIST

TRENDY Although the Kim Kardashian heavy eye is really hot right now, you may regret it down the line. Stick to a classic look for longevity on the wall, and remember 80s brides with blue eye shadow.

• Crest white strips $34.99

MUST BE YOU Make sure you look like you. If you rarely wear makeup, showing up heavily done up will throw everyone off along with your pictures. If you have been wearing black eyeliner since you were 14, then stick with that. Remember, makeup is supposed to accentuate your natural beauty.

WEDDING THEME AND PALETTE Seasons, floral and theme play a part in wedding makeup. If you are getting married in fall, and your bouquet has deep warm hues your makeup should pull the same colours.

SKIN CARE Establish a healthy skin regime months before the wedding. Don’t switch to a new cleanser the night before, your skin may react! Best cleanser out there – Cetaphil.

EYELASHES They are awesome and make a huge difference when applied correctly. Consider a set of permanent extensions from a professional with work you have seen. Or practice applying fake day-use ones. YouTube has a lot of how-to videos for eyelashes and makeup. Search LISA ELDRIDGE or GOSSMAKEUPARTIST.

ASK AN EXPERT BY MOUNTAIN BRIDE Reception

Focus on a design that is YOU. Step away from Pinterest and think about three key things that you love. If pomegranates are

your favourite fruit, incorporate that into your table design. What is your favourite jewellery? Turquoise is hot right now

and looks amazing with crisp white and greenery. Maybe there is a pattern that

inspires you, such as chevron, quatrefoil

or art deco. You may also find inspiration

from your wedding dress. One of the

most creative designs we have worked on was inspired by the bride’s dress that was a throwback to the roaring 20’s.

ASK AN EXPERT BY MOUNTAIN BRIDE Hair/Makeup

Get a hair and makeup trial! It is an absolute must, and a good excuse to have a date night out with your fiance in the middle of your busy wedding planning. Be sure to ask your makeup artist for tips on products you can take with you through the wedding day to refresh your makeup. You might also consider getting eyelash extensions. If you have never had them before, try them out at least six months before your wedding. They make your eyes really pop in pictures and are great for low maintenance instant mascara on your honeymoon.

While planning your wedding in Fernie, why not utilize some of the unique services available here? MUSIC

No good party is complete without music! After you’ve said “I Do” it’s time to let loose and celebrate and music is “instrumental.” Fernie is host to an array of options, including bands, Djs and classical ensembles. The following are available for booking, or if you’re looking for something a little different try contacting one of the local bars that book bands and acts regularly as they may have the contact or recommendation you are looking for.

Aries Entertainment DJ Service ~ Spreading beautiful vibes through the music he spins. 250-423-6858

DJ McRae ~ Playing all of your favourites, sure to have your guests on the dance floor. 250-423-8658

PLANNERS

Looking for a little extra help before, during or after your wedding? Here are a couple of options with services ranging from lending a hand to organizing and implementing the entire plan.

Find it in Fernie ~ A helpful concierge service available to help out with any task, whether big or small. www.finditinfernie.com 250-278-3463 Magical Transformations ~ Assisting in design, coordination and rentals for your event, large or small, indoors or outdoors. www.magicaltransformations.ca 250-423-8916

Mountain Bride ~ Full wedding planning and day-of coordination, with over ten years experience. Exceptional client care and a true love of weddings. www.mountainbride.com 403-585-7649

ASK AN EXPERT BY MOUNTAIN BRIDE Music Wedding entertainment is key. Your guests do not want to hear lengthy speeches about your days at summer camp, they want to party. The DJ or band makes or breaks it for the guest experience. There is a huge difference between a good DJ and a guy who’s there because he knows how to press Play. If you are tempted to string together an iPod play list and call that a dance party, think again. Reading a crowd and knowing what songs to play and when, is a huge talent. Leave it to the professionals unless you want your party to be a bust.

ASK AN EXPERT BY 6:8 PHOTOGRAPHY Make Sure Your Photographer Is Right For You What most wedding couples don’t realize is a photographer is going to spend at least as much time with you as your bridal party and families. It’s important that you feel comfortable and relaxed, and that you trust them to get the important shots regardless of the situation.

Engagement sessions go a long way to getting to know your photographer and building that trust. Aside from getting great photos, they

ASK AN EXPERT BY MOUNTAIN BRIDE Ceremony

Choose wedding vows that reflect your relationship. Work with your marriage commissioner to make your ceremony authentic to your story and love. Ask your guests to be truly present, consider an “unplugged” wedding where guests are asked to put down their cell phones, cameras, and iPads during the exchange of vows. to shots where they’re photographing in dark rooms or bright sunny days, making sure that there is even light across faces without distracting shadows or bright spots. You want your photographer to capture great images throughout the day that tell the story of your wedding.
