The roar of excitement from my little girl Abby rivaled any lion, tiger or bear in the wild or at the Palm Beach Zoo during its Valentine’s Day Breakfast in 2011. Amazing animal encounters like this - and a great breakfast - make this a must attend event for parents, kids and zoo lovers alike. We’re already signed up for this year’s breakfast. With a generous spread of omelet stations, scrambled eggs, country-smoked bacon and more, the buffet rivals a good breakfast restaurant. And there is enough variety for even the pickiest of kids, including a pair of Australian singing dogs as the featured entertainment outside.

It’s safe to say the highlight of the day was a behind the scenes tour of the tiger and jaguar enclosures. Abby went absolutely 2-year old nuts when she got within a few feet of a feisty young jaguar named Maya, stalking the tour group from inside her zoo home. We learned a great deal from the big cat staff member leading the tour. To round out the day, the zoo hosts complimentary rides on its beautiful carousel and meet and greets with its Kiwi the Koala and Timmy the Tiger costume characters. There are takehome crafts and a few surprises as well. By the end of the day, that fuzzy sloth lazily hanging upside down begins to look quite energetic compared to the parents and kids who had a full and special day at the zoo. Dinosaurs Devour the South Florida Science Museum The South Florida Science Museum is under siege! Tyrannosaurs, raptors and other exotic creatures will invade the museum in January during the Dinosaur Attack exhibit. Guests will come faceto-face with and can actually reach out and touch a 70 million-year-old dinosaur bone through this hands-on, interactive adventure. The exhibit is open now and runs through May 13. “This exhibit is all about dinosaurs all the time, with plenty of hands-on activities to add to our understanding of how these great beasts lived and died 70 million years ago. Dinosaurs dominated the world for more than 120 million years, and this exhibit shows us what today’s scientists are doing to uncover long-hidden mysteries about dinosaur survival,” said Lew Crampton, President and CEO of the South Florida Science Museum. Throughout the exhibit, dino explorers of all ages can uncover fossils in the exhibit’s hands-on dig pit and roam through a dino hunter’s camp. There they can dress up like a paleontologist while discovering the field techniques and tools used by actual paleontologists to bring home the bones. Activities and crafts will take place throughout the museum including a dino puppet theater, library and videos featuring dinosaurs, dinosaur rubbing and more.

Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions — Children’s Dental Health February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Our Q&A expert this month, Dr. Michael J. Roseff, DMD discusses ways to keep your children’s teeth healthy all year long. Q. When do I schedule the first dental visit? A. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), your child should visit the dentist by his/her 1st birthday, which is roughly six months after the first tooth erupts. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive if you convey a positive attitude. Your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and his or her staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. This is done by telling the child what will happen during the checkup. The first visit will usually be done with the child in the parent’s lap. Even though all of the teeth may not be present, it is important to assess the eruption of the teeth, development of the jaw, nutrition and fluoride. The discussion may include topics such as finger sucking, pacifiers, trauma and grinding. Q. But aren’t they just baby teeth? A. The truth is they are baby teeth, but they are not “just” baby teeth. It is very important to maintain the health of the primary teeth. Neglected cavities can and

do frequently lead to problems which affect developing permanent teeth. Primary teeth, or baby teeth, are important for proper chewing and eating during the period of the greatest growth, provide space for the permanent teeth, guide them into the correct position and permit normal development of the jaw bones and muscles. Primary teeth also affect the development of speech and add to an attractive appearance. While the front four teeth last until 6-7 years of age, the back teeth aren’t replaced until age 10-13. Early care is essential to achieve a lifetime of good dental health for your child. Q. So, when is the best time to begin brushing? It is never too early to start caring for your child’s teeth. Oral hygiene should start at birth. I recommend wiping the gums after every feeding with a washcloth or cotton gauze. Simply wrap the washcloth or gauze around your index finger and wipe off the gums. Consistency is the key by using the same wiping pattern each time. Eventually, your child will open after every feeding expecting a cleaning, which will transfer to brushing after every meal once he or she is older. Once the first teeth erupt, a soft infant toothbrush is recommended with

non-fluoride toothpaste. Use a pea-size amount of toothpaste by applying it across the width instead of the length of the bristles. Once your child is old enough to spit out the toothpaste (and not swallow it), toothpaste containing fluoride is recommended. Q. When can my child brush their own teeth? As your child gets older, it is still important to supervise their daily dental routine. Children can start to “brush” his or her own teeth as soon as they can hold a toothbrush. Parental supervision is needed until they are seven or eight, when most children have the muscle strength and coordination to do a thorough job on their own. Proper brushing removes plaque from the inner, outer and chewing surfaces, but not in-between teeth. For younger children we encourage moving the brush in a circular motion. When teaching older children to brush, place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. Start along gum line with a soft bristle brush in a gentle circular motion. Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower. Repeat the same method on the inside surfaces and chewing surfaces of all the teeth. Finish by brushing the tongue to help freshen breath and remove bacteria. Flossing removes plaque between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing should begin when any two teeth touch. You should floss the child’s teeth until he or she can do it alone. I recommend the pre-made flossers with handles. They make flossing more enjoyable and easier for parents. Gently scrape the floss against the side of the tooth. Repeat this procedure on each tooth. Don’t forget the backs of the last four teeth.

Q. Can candy and snacks cause my child’s teeth to form cavities? Healthy eating habits lead to healthy teeth. Like the rest of the body, the teeth, bones and the soft tissues of the mouth need a well-balanced diet. Children should eat a variety of foods from the five major food groups. Most snacks that children eat can lead to cavity formation. The more frequently a child snacks, the greater the chances for tooth decay. How long food remains in the mouth also plays a role. For example, hard candy and breath mints stay in the mouth a long time, which cause longer acid attacks on tooth enamel. If your child must snack, choose nutritious foods such as vegetables, low-fat yogurt, and low-fat cheese which are healthier and better for children’s teeth. Dr. Michael J. Roseff, DMD, is a pediatric dentist at Roseff Pediatric Dentistry located in Canyon Town Center, Boynton Beach, FL. He received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL., and received his postgraduate training at Indiana University/Riley Children’s Hospital for Children in Pediatric Dentistry. He lives in Wellington, FL., with his wife, two daughters and dog, Lucy.

To promote good dental health ALL year long, PB Parenting is giving away a FREE Twooth Timer This award-winning, mom-invented toothbrush timer encourages children to brush for a full two minutes instead of 10 seconds. Photograph a Party like a Pro!

Article and Photos by Rhea Lewis

Photographing children isn’t always easy

– and parties offer unique challenges for parents. On the challenging side of things, children’s parties can be chaotic places with moving subjects, lots of clutter and often little time for those organizing them to pick up a camera and take a shot. Here are a few tips to get the perfect shot of your little one:

Also try a range of focal lengths ranging from wide angle shots that take in the whole party scene to zoomed shots of kids and party elements.

1. Designate a Party Photographer There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of a party and realizing that while the camera was out and fully charged, no one bothered (or had time) to pick it up and take some shots. Give someone the job and release that person from other party duties to just take photos. 2. Get a Child’s Perspective One of the most important tips I can share is to get down low when taking photos of children. The biggest mistake I see in party photos is adults taking shots from a standing position looking down onto a scene. While you might take a few shots from this perspective, the majority of your photos should be taken at eye level of the subjects you’re shooting.

5. Look for the Party Details Let’s face it, you put a lot of time and effort into those party details! I find that many of these shots are best taken before the guests arrive. Include shots of the cake, balloons and other decorations, presents stacked and party table.

3. Mix up Shooting Angles & Focal Lengths Try some shots from standing up high (get on a chair even to accentuate it – this can be great for group shots) but also get down really low and shoot looking up at the kids. 12 February 2012 | PB Parenting |

4. Adjust the White Balance Setting Most children’s birthday parties happen inside (at least in part) where lighting can be tricky. In most cases there will be some artificial light which can leave your photos with different types of tinges. The easiest way to overcome this and ensure your shots are true in color is to learn to use your white balance controls. Before the party experiment with white balance and get your setting right.

6. Use Bounce Flash or a Diffuser You’ll probably need some sort of extra lighting if your party is inside. You can help to eliminate the need for this by increasing your ISO setting a little, but unless you have a lot of natural light or an

extremely fast lens, you’ll probably need to use a flash. If you have a flash hotshoe, you’ll probably get the best results if you bounce the flash off the room or walls or if you use a flash diffuser of some kind so that the flash is not as harsh on your subjects 7. Know the Party Plan In order to capture all of the important moments in the party you should know how it is planned to run. Know when everyone will be sitting down, when the blowing out of candles will happen, when presents will be opened, etc. This means you can be well positioned for each event just ahead of them happening. 8. Shoot Candidly Most of your party photos will end up being candid ones of children and adults interacting with one another around the different party activities. These shots are largely of kids interacting with each other, Delicious Flickr playing, eating, etc. Make taking the photos a game of sorts – getting them to pose and then show them the results on your LCD. Facebook MySpace 9. Planned Shots While the majority of yourSlash shots will Mixx Dot probably be candid shots you should also think ahead about what type of “must have” sort of shots you want from the party. Reddit FriendFeed Consult with parents (if you’re not one of them) about what type of shots they want. These might include someNewsvine group shots,SlideShare cake shots, blowing out candles, opening presents and party games. Yahoo

Yahoo Buzz

9. Include Adults in your Photos The focus of children’s parties is generally Microsoft the children – but the adults attending MSN the party can actually present you with some fascinating shots as they watch. Sometimes App Store Amazon their reactions to what the children are doing can be quite fascinating, particularly those adults in the immediate family ofVimeo the Qik child having the birthday. Party Planning Made Easy! By Carla Thomas

Hosting a fabulous birthday party can, at

times, be a little overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be! Here are a few tips to help you and your child enjoy the big day with less stress and a more memorable party for all who attend. Plan your party early! The earlier you get into party mode the less stressful it will become the night before the big day. I try to plan my parties 3 months out. I know that realistically not everyone has 3 months to spend planning a party, but start gathering ideas for a theme. Most kid parties have a theme based around a character (such as Hello Kitty) or a favorite television show. Try to think outside the box on theme ideas. Not only will this help your party stand out from the other four parties they are attending that month, but it will make your child’s party unique and memorable. Think of an activity that you child enjoys, ballet for example, or even their favorite treats such as ice cream or lollipops. If you haven’t heard of Pinterest, I highly recommend checking it out! There are inspirations for everything on the site, and it is a great way to organize your party and share your ideas with all of your friends. Once a theme has been established for the party, start thinking about location. Many people think that having a party at home can save money. This can

be true but you have to factor in prep, clean up and the fact that all these kids will be running around your house. I personally like the idea of both. I like the convenience of having a party at home so that I can set up and start decorating days before the event. I like that I don’t have to worry about what I forgot or about lugging boxes of things to a venue. And then there are pros about having a party away from home. Typically there is no need to clean up and you don’t have to worry about cleaning ahead of time. Try alternating locations. One year have the party at home and the next have it at a ballet studio. Let’s get to the party details shall we and start with invitations. Invitations set the tone for any party. They not only let your guests know the details of the party, but they take the place of that awkward

561-789-8982 Let me bring a story to life-story book characters available! phone call, “can I bring my other daughter . . . should they wear a swim suit or dress as pirates,” that sort of thing. Etsy is a fantastic resource for invitations. You can pretty much find any invitation you can dream up on there. If you can’t find the design that you had in mind, have it custom created.

Fabric is a fabulous resource when planning a party. There are so many things that you can do with fabric! You can use it to make a statement backdrop for your table, add texture and add details. Not only does it make a fantastic table cloth for your dessert table, it can be used over and over.

Dessert tables are the rage these days! They are everywhere! They are a great way to have one focal point of the party that, without a word, will leave your guests and your little one smitten. Who needs all over decorations when the dessert table is just that? A dessert table filled with a variety of treats is not only amazing to look at, but you can use those treats to fill goodie bags at the end of the party!

Every party should have one main activity. Whether it be to learn a ballet or swim in the pool, all kids need an activity to keep them occupied. The main activity should tie in with the theme of the party. If you are having a ballet party, the girls should learn a ballet. If your party is a pirate theme, have the kids go on a scavenger hunt for treasures. When the kids are starting to wear down and able to sit still, have a craft ready for them. All kids like doing crafts and it’s a great way for everyone to work together and interact.

Printable stationery is a great way to bring your theme together and add a more personal touch without breaking the bank. They are a great way to bring in bits of the character theme without becoming overwhelmingly Hello Kitty. Printable stationery consists of your party circles (that can be used for cupcake toppers) party labels (that could be used for food labels) favor tags, drink wraps, party banners and more. Each item can be completely customized and personalized to fit your child’s theme. A favor tag added to the bag will top it off and the guest will love the sweet treats inside (and the parents will adore you for not filing the bags with junk that will end up all over the house).

A perfect birthday party shouldn’t be too stressful. With a little planning and preparation it can be enjoyable by all who attend.
