Letter From The Publisher

Greetings,

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s time to celebrate all the incredible moms out there—whether you’re a biological mom, an adoptive mom, a foster mom, a grandmother, or any other maternal figure in someone’s life. Here’s to you!

As Jill Churchill wisely said, “There’s no way to be a perfect mother, and a million ways to be a good one.” So let’s take this moment to appreciate all the ways you’ve been a wonderful mom.

On May 12th, as you indulge in that extra hour of sleep, savor your morning coffee or enjoy a refreshing mimosa, let’s hope for a day of peace and relaxation. Maybe, just maybe, the universe will grant us a ceasefire in the eternal sibling bickering. In this issue, starting on page 8, we have a plethora of fantastic ideas for how to make Mother’s Day truly special. Whether you’re looking for heartfelt gifts, memorable experiences, or simply some welldeserved pampering, we’ve got you covered.

As the school year wraps up (Thursday, May 30th), time seems to have flown by. Soon, kids will eagerly await the summer break. If you're still sorting out summer plans, don't worry! We have a wide range of exciting options for kids of all ages, from Jupiter to Boca Raton. Visit www.pbparenting.com for our online summer camp directory, featuring the latest listings, an interactive map, and easy-to-use dropdown menus to find the perfect fit for your children.

From all of us at PB Parenting, we wish you a Mother’s Day filled with peace, relaxation, and the knowledge that your hard work is deeply appreciated. After all, you deserve it!

Happy Parenting,

Together, we can't solve the climate crisis alone. Yet, by each taking small steps, we can make a big difference for the planet we're leaving to the next generation. That idea was one of the driving forces behind the design of the Harmony Bottle from zak! All reusable water bottles help break the toxic cycle of single-use plastics, but the Harmony Bottle takes environmental responsibility a step further as it is made with 73% recycled material. But being environmentally responsible doesn’t mean you should have to compromise on quality, functionality, or individuality, and the 40oz Harmony Bottle doesn’t make you sacrifice any of that! The hefty side handle allows you to get a secure handhold and the tapered base makes it simple to slide into most car cup holders to give you access to your favorite beverages on short commutes or long road trips. Best of all, the Harmony 2 in 1 Tumbler from zak! was created with an amazing lid that doesn’t force you to choose between using a straw or sipping from the lid. On one side is a lock-tight lid covering an opening where you can drink hot or cold beverages. On the other side is a pullup drinking spout for sippin’. It’s amazing how not having to compromise can put a smile on anyone’s face! Check out the lineup at https://www.zak.com/collections/ harmony-sustainable-water-bottles

10 Ways to Celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day

According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to be a total of $33.5 billion this year. The figure is the second highest in the history of the survey, following last year’s record $35.7 billion. A total 84 percent of Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day and spend an average of $254.04 per person. Of those celebrating Mother’s Day, most (59%) are purchasing gifts for a mother or stepmother, followed by a wife (22%) or daughter (12%). As seen in previous years, the most popular gifts to give are flowers (74%), greeting cards (74%) and special outings such as dinner or brunch (59%). Consumers will spend a total of $7 billion on jewelry, $5.9 billion on special outings and $3.5 billion on electronics.

Still, consumers continue to prioritize thoughtful gifts. Respondents said the most important factors in purchasing a Mother’s Day gift include

finding items that are unique or different (48%) or those that create a special memory (43%).

Below are some simple and thoughtful ways to celebrate Mom. Maybe you can subtly send this list out to someone...give them a little hint!

1. Give Mom a Break: Nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding your partner has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother’s Day, relieve mom of her usual to-do’s by making it your responsibility. Are you too busy to do it yourself? Maybe hire a cleaning service to come in and do a deep clean or gift her a few cleanings for the next couple of months. Help Mom organize the clutter and pick up your toys! Maybe have the kids go through some items to donate. Less items less to clean!

8 May 2024| PB Parenting |

2. Let Mom Sleep: It doesn’t matter if you have a newborn or a 10 year old, or if you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, I am guessing you are sleep deprived. Let mom sleep in, offer to take the children out so she can have a quiet house to rest in. While you are out, pick up some coffee or pastries and come home and surprise her. In the afternoon, let her take a nap. Is the baby still getting up in the middle of the night? Instead of her getting up give her a break and do the nighttime routine.

3. Brunchin’ it: How many times does Mom make pancakes and eggs for everyone? Now it is your turn! Make her favorite items for breakfast. Surprise her with coffee or tea in bed. If cooking isn’t in your skill set, take her somewhere nice to enjoy their cooking or let her have some alone time brunching with her friends. Bonus points if bottomless mimosas are included.

4. Pamper Mom: Moms take care of everyone else’s needs but what about hers? Pampering can fit many gift giving budgets from a full day at the spa (We love Eau Palm) to something as

simple as a manicure at her favorite nail salon. You can even pamper her at home with a nice foot rub or run her a bath, light some aroma therapy candles and give her some undisturbed time in the tub. I assure you any thoughtful gesture of some much needed pampering won’t go unnoticed.

5. A Day Together: Set aside all other plans, grab the whole family and head to mom’s favorite park or the beach. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike. Enjoy the outdoors together as a family. If mom isn’t the outdoorsy type, take her to the movies or a museum. Just spend the day with her doing something she WANTS to do.

6. Keep the Peace: If you have more than one child you know about the ‘sibling squabbles” and how mom is often a referee in her own home. Talk to your children about a “peace treaty” for the day to give mom a break from the constant back and forth bickering.

7. Plant some flowers. Instead of buying flowers that will die in a week use some extra space in the yard to plant a flower garden for mom. Maybe even look at plants that attract butterflies and make a butterfly garden. An extra bonus present would be to have the kids paint and decorate some rocks (don’t forget to seal them). There are also plaster kits the kids can use to make “stepping stones” with their feet or hand prints that would make some memorable garden keepsakes.

8. Take Mom to the Theatre! There are some great shows coming in May and June including the Broadway musical, Mamma Mia and Bluey (hey adults like Bluey too!). Miami City Ballet will be presenting Swan Lake on Mother's Day weekend at the Kravis Center. Geek moms will love to check out Space Explorers The Infinite. Check out www.kravis.org for upcoming shows.

9. Put Mom Back in the picture and schedule a Family Portrait session! Mom takes a lot of photos of the kids but where is she? Make her feel glamorous and schedule a family photo

Sensati al Su er at e

session. Check out Lynn Studios, Inc www. lynnstudios1.com. When the photo session is finished make sure to frame them nicely or have canvases made to display in your home.

10. Create a piece of treasured art or a craft. If you’re not super creative, the experts can help! Head over to Picasso’s Creative Workshop in Lake Worth and give mom a handmade painted pottery piece (They even have funtional pottery pieces such as cute candle votive holders, jewelry holders and more) or sign the kids up for a fun art class at artNEST in Delray Beach and Boca Raton where they can create mom something special that she can treasure for many years. If mom is a creative herself sign her up for classes and workshops at Lighthouse Arts Center or Armory Arts Center.

No matter how you celebrate your Mother’s Day, PB Parenting wishes the best to all the moms out there! We hope you have a relaxing day filled with love and surrounded by your loved ones!

How does it feel to get a hug? How many hugs do you think humans need each day for emotional and mental health? Would you be surprised to know that we need 7 each day. Children need a lot of regular hugs. This creates a stronger emotional attachment and when a child feels “connected and respected” at home they make good decisions.

My mentor once shared a story in which she was engaged in a power struggle with her child and her daughter did not want to get ready for school. She kept repeating herself and her child kept refusing. She finally said, “Can I have a hug?” Her daughter paused and did not come over to hug her. Then she said, “I could really use a hug.” When they hugged she noticed her child melt into her arms. You might think she was rewarding the behavior, but this is not the case. She then said, “Thanks, I needed that.” and her daughter said, “I did too.” Afterwards, she got ready for school.

This works because:

• Children do better when they feel better.

• A misbehaving child is a discouraged child at that moment, and hugs give encouragement.

• Hugs are an example of connection before

correction, which works well for children.

Next time your child is exhibiting strong feelings (anger, sadness) I encourage you to try the following:

1. Validate how they are feeling with a nice tone (you don’t have to agree with them, you are simply acknowledging their feelings)- “I can see how upset you are right now because you would like ____. “ If your child is older you could even follow that with, “Do you want to explain why that’s important to you.” They will feel heard and respected (very healthy), and they are much more likely to compromise after they feel heard.

2. It’s very important to realize that when a child is intensifying their feelings they are saying, “Notice my feelings.” They will calm down when their feelings are acknowledged.

3. I encourage you to think of a time you had a bad day. If someone said,”It sounds like you’re frustrated because your boss was disrespectful to you, I can understand that.” How would you feel vs. hearing “Don’t get mad, don’t worry, you’re fine” (minimizing feelings).”

4. After reflecting back what you hear them say

12 May 2024| PB Parenting |
DR. TRACIE QUILL, PsyD.

you can ask for a hug. If they refuse you can follow it with, “I could really use a hug.” 5. Then, decide what you feel comfortable doing and let them know.

Lastly, it’s important children be asked for hugs and not told to hug people. It should always be a choice and their choice should be respected. You can say, “Would you like to hug grandma goodbye?” when she comes over instead of telling or forcing. This teaches good physical boundaries that they can start learning at a young age. This will help them discern later in life who they feel safe with and strengthen their intuition. And the ability to trust and follow one’s intuition leads to good decisions that bring peace and joy.

One way to express that love is by gift giving, and in the true spirit of parenting, most moms don't want expensive or fancy gifts but prefer the gift of quality time or handmade treasures.

Whether it’s her first or thirty-first Mother’s Day, one thing we can all agree upon is that when it comes to gifts, mom doesn’t need another candle, mug or picture frame. However, finding the perfect gift can be challenging, if not downright stressful, with many well-intentioned gifts ending up as nothing more than clutter. Plus, you know she’s trying to stay organized and declutter.

Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to figure out what kind of Mother’s Day gift to get your wife, partner, mom, daughter, sister, or friend here’s a list of 7 amazing clutter-free gift ideas.

1. Restaurant gift cards. Does she have a local sushi restaurant or pizza place on speed dial? Get her a gift card to her favorite neighborhood eatery. Having no meal prep or cleanup is always a win, plus you are helping to support a local business. *Pro Tip: Get more bang for your

Did you know?

The Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 1900’s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. This holiday, celebrated on the second Sunday in May in the United States, is a wonderful opportunity for children to show their mom appreciation and love.

buck by buying restaurant gift cards at Costco or BJ’s. They often offer gift cards at a discount.

2. Salon gift cards. Does she love to have her nails done? Does she rave about her favorite hair salon? Get her a gift certificate to her favorite place. Even if pampering isn’t her thing, maybe now is the perfect time to have her treat herself.

3. Childcare IOU. If you can, give the gift of babysitting. You can help watch her kids while she goes out and does something fun! Here’s a FREE printable coupon you can fill out and personalize.

4. Girls’ Night Out! Plan a fun night with a group of her girlfriends. The more you can arrange beforehand, the more fun it will be for your mommy friend.

5. Meal Delivery Service. If she is usually the one in charge of meal planning, prepping, and cooking, get a meal delivery or meal kit service for a week or two! This way, she can enjoy delicious, nutritious meals without the hassle of grocery shopping. Here is a list of the top 5 in our area.

6. Donation to a charity in her name. There are so many incredible charities you could donate

14 May 2024| PB Parenting |

to on behalf of the mom in your life. Think about what pulls at her heart. Is she currently involved in an organization or local charity you could make a donation to?

7. And, my favorite----Give the gift of organization by hiring a local professional organizer to help her declutter and set up systems to make her life easier.

There are so many more clutter-free gift ideas, I hope these will help get you started. I think many of us would agree that having time to rest, relax and spend quality time with our family, without the usual demands of busy family life is one of the best gifts we can receive! Happy Mother’s Day, I hope it is special and clutter-free!

DAY CAMP CHECKLIST

• Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes

• Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45. Pro tip: Apply sunscreen before leaving home - send a bottle for reapplication and pack a hat and sunglasses

• Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.)

• Bathing suit and towel

• Bring two water bottles one that is frozen to enjoy later as it melts.

• Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks

• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain)

• Rain poncho (rolls up small)

• Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful.

• Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.

• Do not bring valuable items like electronics.

• Encourage your child to participate in camp activities and engage with their peers.
