Editor’s that the roll of film I was using needed to be developed, and that patience was key as it could take a over a week to see the results.

When I was in my mid-to-late teens, everyone in my family had embraced photography. I often became one of the subjects instead of the photographer at numerous family gatherings and events. Looking at the hundreds of pictures we took back then, I didn’t think myself to be photogenic – especially in comparison with my siblings who looked perfect in every shot.

The first time I went to get my film processed, I was amazed by all the things I saw. The shelves of the downtown photography shop were stacked with rolls of film that created all sorts of interesting geometric patterns. There were umbrellas, reflectors, flashes and a wide variety of vintage cameras to choose from.

I became curious to know why the camera wasn’t capturing what I saw in the mirror. I set my camera on the self-timer mode, and would experiment with different kinds of lighting and settings to capture images of myself at different angles. I learned a lot about my face, bone structure and features, and how they play into getting a good shot.

I would walk into the store almost daily after school asking questions about the different types of film, film speeds and so forth. I would save up my lunch money to buy rolls of film and small accessories. And when a store clerk actually explained how film was developed, my love for photography became eternal.

The want for a good picture wasn’t vanity-driven. This was about finding ways to get a good quality picture.

Practicing different tactics to achieve that helped me understand how to make everyone I photographed look their best.

Photography has always occu-

pied a special place in my life.

Moving to Canada at a young age, language barriers limited my writing skills, and I couldn’t quite put down my thoughts like my friends could.

The idea of keeping a diary or having an English pen pal was very intimidating.

Aside from wanting to express my thoughts with others, my eyes were equally overwhelmed with everything there is to see in a new country. This was when photography was introduced to me, and I haven’t stopped capturing unique places and moments since.

When my interest in photography began, cameras were certainly not on the level they are now. I used a 35mm camera owned by my father. I immediately obsessed over its retro design; it was quite heavy and had the coolest rubber hood at the end of the lens.

I began to explore all the buttons and levers, and couldn’t wait to start taking pictures of my new surroundings.

My new passion soon made me aware

As time went on, I embraced how technology continuously changed the cameras I knew; entranced by the new ways that enabled me to capture my world.

When I received a new portable camera that could shoot in landscape mode, I remember purchasing my first roll of advance film. I also recall how expensive my first digital camera was, and how mind-blowing it was to hear that new models were coming out with more megapixels.

Crazy to think that my current phone now has 4-times the pixels of my first digital camera and a more powerful processor than my first computer!

Another aspect of my love for photography had to do with ‘selfies’ before it became a word in the Oxford Dictionary.

Being part of the fashion and beauty industry gives me the amazing opportunity to apply these skills daily. I continue to use myself as a photography guinea pig (the photo above this letter was taken this way) as it helps me find new and better ways to guide the new models I work with.

This issue is dedicated to all the fashion photographers out there with an incredible eye for the creative. These photographers combine skill, talent, passion and vision to produce beautiful, timeless images.

It is our absolute pleasure and honour to include them in this edition of fave Magazine.

It’s eleven in the morning, and Natalie Hall is just getting to Brooklyn.

Dressed completely in 90s grunge, she could have walked for Marc Jacobs during New York Fashion Week if not for her height. Her combat boots add an inch or two to her 5’5” stature. Her outfit doesn’t quite mirror the characters she plays on TV and in film.

Williamsburg is the setting for Hall’s cover shoot. The team unpacks immediately, and begins to transform the actress from a chic lower eastside girl with a hard rock aesthet-

ic to a clean and polished “girl-next-door”.

Her shoot was inspired by all of the blondes that have blazed the trail before her.

“So many actresses inspire me with their work in Hollywood. The obvious ones are Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet and Lucille Ball,” says Hall.

It’s no surprise that the actress is inspired by the strong women she mentioned above.

It also comes as no surprise that she admires one of the best comedic actresses and businesswomen of all-time. Hall likes diversity on-screen and off.

‘m inspired by actors and actresses who’ve created their own production companies or find other outlets in the business like Lucille Ball,” she says.

I first met Natalie a year ago. I was asked to style her for the Up Fronts in New York (a coming-out party for new shows scheduled to premiere during the fall and spring TV seasons). Hall, along with 90210 alum, Matt Lanter, and actress Aimee Teegarden were there to promote the now defunct CW series Star-Crossed. Set in the year 2024, the series revolved around a high school inhabited by both humans and aliens. On the show, Hall played Taylor Beecham, resident mean girl and Queen Bee of the school.

Natalie Hall has the makings of a mean girl – smoldering good looks with long, feathered and highlighted blonde hair, dreamy brown eyes, and a shape that would make even the most confident of girls envious. The only thing that’s missing is the attitude. Hall is bright-eyed and optimistic about people and her place in the industry.

er first breakthrough role came at age 19 when she played Val in A Chorus Line. “It was an amazing experience. I had to grow up fast working with such talent on a big stage,” she says. That role earned her an Ovation award for her work on the national tour.

“In this industry, it’s best to always want to learn,” says Hall. “Never assume that you know all there is to know about the business.”

The actresses Hall mentioned as inspirations are blondes, but the stereotype of being ditzy doesn’t apply to any of them – and it doesn’t apply to Hall either. Her ambition in Hollywood isn’t just to land the role of a lifetime, it’s to spend a lifetime learning the business and creating opportunities for those who come after her.

“The best advice I can give is to fully believe in yourself, and that confidence is key in this industry. Always be kind and grateful,” says Hall. “This business is a journey and climb so you have to be willing to go on it. Don’t let the highs be too high and the lows be too low.”

The cancellation of Star-Crossed might have been a low for the actress, but her optimism is infectious. Her belief in putting positive things in the universe has served her well – well enough to land guest-starring roles on some of the most critically acclaimed shows on TV.

ost recently, Hall played Goth-vamp Amber Crabtree on HBO’s True Blood. Her character was written to be the complete opposite of her sister, Sarah Newlin. On USA Network’s long series Royal Pains, Hall played Hope, a burlesque dancer who needs help with pains she experiences during her regular act.

More than that, Hall’s range leaves a lasting impression on audiences.

She’s the girl that’s effortlessly familiar. She was Colby Chandler on All My Children, Maura (the stripper) on The Good Wife, Hannah Marin’s evil step-sister, Kate Randall in ABC Family’s uber-popular drama Pretty Little Liars, Ellie on the Hallmark Channel’s Love’s Christmas Journey, and she played Britney, a pretty girl who loans her body to the show’s deceased lead character in Drop Dead Diva. How’s that for range?

“Each role is so different. I go about them differently actually. I love reading a script and asking myself why my character says what she says, or does what she does. I do a lot of research too. Backstory is everything,” says Hall.

Natalie’s backstory isn’t as dramatic as some of the characters she plays. Online bios describe her as a triple threat – singer, dancer and actress. She was

almost born in the 90s, but she missed the mark by a year. Her Vancouver roots explain why she was especially proud to do the cover shoot for fave.

rowing up in Canada, neither of her parents were in the business. Hall was most interested in sports when she was younger – and she admits to being fiercely competitive when it comes to games.

“I won a lot of track meets and played on an all-boy soccer team,” said Hall.

The actress’s Instagram is flooded with pictures of Canada and her family. She’s big on family. Hall is close to her brother and spends as much time with him as she can. Her mother is her best friend, and her father is her main inspiration and biggest cheerleader.

Hall did dance classes and voice lessons, but never auditioned for roles as a child. The inspiration to be an actress came as she got older and decided that being an actress was how she wanted to spend the rest of her life. So with the help of her father, she moved to New York.

Since then, the actress has been pounding the pavement. Between New York and Hollywood, Hall has been making serious strides. There’s not much time for anything else, though Hall is always open to more experiences – including love.

O

f her ideal man, Hall is specific. “I love someone who can make me laugh. Laughing is so important. I also like someone who is very driven in life, and has his own passions going on. Also, being down to earth and humble is a huge thing for me. And it doesn’t hurt if he’s handsome!”

Even at a young age, which is generally when we make most of our mistakes, Hall has no regrets. “Those mistakes made me stronger and I learned a valuable lesson. You have to fall or fail in life. It helps shape who you are.”

Our admiration for Nicole Fox began when she appeared on America’s Next Top Model.

With each episode, our cheering got louder as we got closer to the edge of our seats watching all the action. Of course, when the results were announced on the last episode, we couldn’t think of anyone else winning but Nicole.

I’m delighted to now be able to interview Nicole and share with our readers what’s going on in the world of Nicole Fox.

Around that time, we were just forming a team to create a fashion magazine now called ‘fave’. I recall those times so clearly especially the occasions when some of our current members would gather weekly in my living room to watch Nicole during that installment.

FM: On September 17th, you attended a very special Yellow Carpet event at the Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Can you tell us what this event was all about?

NF: Sure! I was attending to support the launch of my friend’s show, The Adventures of Velvet Prozak, and his new EDM single Gravity. A lot of people were there to do the same! It was a fun time.

FM: How did you become part of The Adventures of Velvet Prozak? How has your experience been so far?

NF: Yeah, I auditioned for Velvet Prozak after watching some of their footage. It was funny and silly so I thought, this would be so fun to do! My character is an artist, which is cool because I’ll be putting my actual artwork into the show. Working on the music video was fast and fun! Everyone was super efficient but at the same time real nice to hang out with, as you would suspect from the content. Definitely a sweet group of people to work with!

FM: Let’s talk about your art for a moment. How would you describe your style of art? Where can our readers see more of it?

NF: My artwork is whimsical and surrealist, drawings and oil paintings. There are stories behind them all, and someday when I have some free time I hope to connect the dots and write that all down. For now, you can see my work on Instagram at Nicolefoxofficial and Facebook at /NicoleFoxArt. I will be separating artwork out from my acting and modeling stuff on its own website where you will be able to purchase prints and apparel, because, oh, yeah, did I mention I’m making some sweet-artsy-quirky-surrealist-shirts? My first venture into the other side of the fashion world as a creator! So please stay tuned into my social media for updates on that.

FM: After Top Model, you were in several episodes of The Bold and The Beautiful. What was it like working on that show?

NF: It was a very tranquil set as everyone went about their jobs gracefully and quietly, and it was so awesome getting to try on so many gorgeous gowns for my scenes. They were incredible. The stylists on that set all do an amazing job at making everything look decadent and glamorous, so the whole experience was a little dream like. The sets were like giant dollhouses.

FM: Going back to Top Model, Tyra was looking to challenge the fashion industry to look at models of different heights. Kate Moss is known for having broken the mold. How did you feel going into this show knowing some of the challenges ahead?

NF: I was scared, and I bawled my eyes out before getting on the plane to film, but I found that being scared like that was kind of a great feeling because I knew I had a challenge ahead! I had no expectation of winning either, so I was more preoccupied with the immediate challenge of competing on ANTM versus what a postshow career in modeling would entail.

FM: Aside from winning cycle 13, what was the most rewarding part of this experience?

NF: Swimming in the ocean was something I first did on Top Model. It was something I had always wanted to do, and it is something that I continue to love! Also, just being brave enough to be myself on TV in front of all those people. Going through with that was really scary, but rewarding. Then of course, being a part of a big production like ANTM really did prepare me for some challenges that lay ahead of me in the modeling and acting world, so I am immensely grateful for the conditioning and preparation! FM: What advice would you give to our readers who are aspiring models and/or actors trying to break into the industry?

Paris Fashion Moment

F

rom a young age, I’ve been fixated on the fashion world.

I’ve spent countless hours absorbing myself in collections, and researching this mysterious realm for years. My watchful eyes have seen only a small percentage of what has occurred in the fashion world in the last century, but have nonetheless been attentive. Every once in a while something special that I fondly refer to as a “Fashion Moment” happens - a moment in time that has, is, or will surely one day echo through the ages.

There is a reason why we still hear the names of some designers that are long deceased, and it is because their creativity and vision influenced the industry in a way like never before.

Christian Dior gave us the New Look and revolutionized the way women dressed after the Second World War. Coco Chanel gave us the now staple Little Black Dress, many variations of the classic tweed jacket, and of course, the 2.55. There is one designer, however, who has had many Fashion Moments; touching the hearts of millions with a sincere desire to create beauty. That person was the beloved and incomparable Yves Saint Laurent.

A

t the tender age of twenty-one, Saint Laurent was chosen by prestigious fashion house Christian Dior to take over as creative director after Dior’s death; foreshadowing his eventual profound international success.

Yves Saint Laurent’s influence is best described as having the ability to illicit an image of sensuality, sophistication, and modernization simply by the mention of his name. With every collection he had the world perplexed and in complete fascination of his then newly conceptualized ready-to-wear creations. Saint Laurent popularized countless silhouettes including the Beatnik look, the Mondrian dress, the see-through blouse, tight pants, high boots, the safari look, and, arguably his most famous, Le Smoking – the first ever androgynous tuxedo suit worn by women. Though met with much resistance and disagreement, Le Smoking changed what had been a societal norm for men, allowing women to

take on a new look as Dior did 19-years earlier.

A

s a label, Yves Saint Laurent met similar resistance in 2011 when it was announced that Hedi Slimane was to change the name of the ready-to-wear line from Yves Saint Laurent to Saint Laurent Paris, as well as move the design studio from Paris to Los Angeles. I, too, was a bit surprised and slightly shocked when I heard this news. I couldn’t understand right away what direction Hedi Slimane was going with such a bold move, but it’s clearer to me now. I realize that Hedi, as always, knows exactly what he is doing; plotting his moves with perfect precision, and using his tenure not as an end point, but rather a means to promote many different musical and visually creative sides that he has involved in the Saint Laurent brand.

I

t’s important to indicate that, with no exaggeration, Hedi Slimane is a powerful revolutionary in the world of fashion, design and photography. In a category of creativity second to none, he is always pushing forward. During his time as creative director of Dior Homme, he changed menswear forever with his popularization of the skinny look. Karl Lagerfeld, a man who needs no introduction, even credits his substantial weight loss during this era to the designer, stating his desire to wear the slim Dior suits made by Slimane as his motivation.

The beginnings of Slimane’s skinny look can be traced back to 1996 when he was ironically appointed as readyto-wear director of the men’s collection at Yves Saint Laurent. It is here that he would receive acclaim that led to his revolutionary appointment as creative director of menswear at Dior Homme. Slimane’s history with YSL already gives him the credibility to make the changes to the brand that he has made.

This brings us to Hedi’s first collection for Saint Laurent Paris; a true Fashion Moment that would herald a new obsession with the brand - both thrilling

and scandalizing all at once. At this point, the news of the name and location change generated both negative backlash and anticipation. While some absent mindedly went on to say that it was a disgraceful collection (most likely because Hedi made some of the fashion press stand in the back while his musician and other close industry friends sat front row), I found it to be a complete success. The collection was a pristine mix of Yves references through Moroccan tassels, pussy bows, hints of animal print, and Le Smoking, in addition to Slimane’s own signature rock ‘n’ roll chic and young, adventurous style. Wide brimmed hats added some spectacle to the looks, and remain popular to this day. His show was also a success because it was a statement of talent to anyone who disbelieved him. They should have known better than to doubt the revolutionary Slimane and his ability to create a Fashion Moment.

T

here are people who feel as though Hedi should not have made the changes he has made to the company. However, before Hedi took over the reins from Stefano Pilati, the company was facing financial struggles, and rumors had spread that the company was not able to sustain itself. The 41-year-old Madison Avenue store in New York City was closed, as well as a few other U.S. stores. Hedi took the brand and literally shook things up and got everyone to talk about Saint Laurent while gaining much financial success. The company’s revenues increased by 18% to 557 million Euros in 2013 and in the first half of 2014, the company witnessed another raise of 26%. By comparison, brands like Gucci and Bottega Veneta grew by only 4% in 2013.

Today, Saint Laurent clothes are flying off the racks. When someone is seen wearing Saint Laurent, everybody pays attention - it’s as simple as that.

The clothes are stunning and they are made impeccably to stand out. This can’t be said for every luxury brand in the same context as it can for Saint Laurent, at least from a design perspective.

Someone can look at any of these garments and see immediately without even touching them that they are meticulously well-made. This is due to the new tailoring atelier that Slimane introduced; many garments are finished beautifully by hand in an incredibly refined manner to the upmost quality.

Slimane’s Saint Laurent Permanent Collection is a personal favourite of mine because it embodies an aura of timeless elegance with that perfect edge everyone is looking for in luxury. Items only from Saint Laurent’s ready-to-wear collections include garments that can cost up to $68,000 – which are incredibly expensive – but selling incredibly nonetheless.

This year while hosting the Oscars, Ellen DeGeneres wore three custom Saint Laurent tuxedo suits and, again, had the world talking. Angelina Jolie has shown up wearing Saint Laurent looks several times to different red carpet events. Her recent ELLE cover and photo spread where she exclusively wears Saint Laurent is absolutely stunning and frame-worthy. Kate Moss is always seen wearing Saint Laurent bags, and in typical fashion, whatever Kate touches turns to gold and sells everywhere.

It’s rare that a company can so quickly go from failing to becoming the unmatched leader of cool in the industry.

Hedi is a visionary - someone with a real knowledge of beauty, integrity and genuine style. Hedi takes our dream world of style and ultimate desires and makes them real. He turns heads with what looks like not a single intention of doing so, and leaves us begging for more.

There is something almost intimidating about it all. To see such incredible restoration of the Rive-Gauche classicalism of original Yves Saint Laurent style combined with punk rock fashion beauty, as well as a heartfelt nod to all things that inspire Hedi is fascinating.

While standing on the balcony of Saint Laurent’s rumored soon-to-be revived couture atelier, Hedi perfectly articulated his vision for the brand: “There is that balance I want to find between the contemporary world—my studio in Los Angeles—and Paris—the church, pure tradition. The fashion is about both influences. It’s the moment juxtaposed with tradition. That’s the house.”

FM: I have been such a big fan of yours for so long.

You were my inspiration to take makeup courses.

Who inspired you to follow a career in this industry?

PV: Thank you for the compliment! I’m finding

inspiration from many things. I love nature, urban living, industrial design, and find much inspiration from diverse cultures, historical and pop cultural references.

There have also been several artists who’ve inspired me throughout my career: Pat McGrath, Kevyn Aucoin, Sam Mcknight and Guido Palau are top of the list.

FM You’ve worked with some of my favourite fashion icons like Kate Moss, Coco Rocha and Claudia Schiffer to name a few. You’ve also produced work for Vogue, Versace and Chanel! What was it like to work on such iconic faces and for such incredible companies?

PV: I love my job, and have been lucky enough

that 99.9% of the people I work with are wonderful. Generally, the higher up the ladder you go the more pleasurable the experience and people. I stop myself from time to time and take in the situation and pay gratitude for those moments!

FM: Apart from working with some of the most beautiful people in the fashion industry, you’ve also had the opportunity to work with some music legends like The Rolling Stones and Duran Duran.

What were these experiences like?

PV: As an amateur musician myself, I LOVE music

and enjoy the laid back nature of working with musicians. On a rare occasion, I’ve even jammed with a few!! The reality is they have one of the few jobs that allow them to just “BE” themselves. I enjoy working in this environment, it’s generally pretty chilled.

FEATURE FM: Most of our readers know you from the TV show Look-A-Like and Canada’s Next Top Model, but your televised work is way more extensive than that. The Oscars, The Grammy Awards, ET Canada and eTalk Daily are just a few in your roster. Your work is not only beauty related, a lot of it has to do with fashion. How did you get into working red carpet events?

PV: Growing up in a large family (9 sisters!), one

quickly develops an eye for fashion, beauty and the banter that puts people at ease during fashion crisis. I’ve been doing it all my life. When the people from the TV Guide Network in Los Angeles called and offered me the position on the red carpet, I jumped at the opportunity!! They were replacing Joan & Melissa Rivers with Lisa Rinna and Joey Fatone from ‘N Sync, and I joined their team!!! To me, Joan will always be the Queen of the Red Carpet. I loved how she took the piss out of the celebrities and all the fashionistas that took themselves too seriously!

FM: What is your fave hair and makeup product at the moment and why?

PV: Oribe dry texturizing spray is a staple. I love

the texture it gives the hair. For makeup, I still go back to Armani for coverage, and I love the feel of YSL powders. Clean and fresh!

FM: Many of our readers are aspiring Makeup Artist, Hairstylist and Stylists. If you could share one piece of advice to our aspiring readers, what would that be?

PV: Stay focused, set goals and don’t allow your-

self to sway off course. Remember, your journey will be unique and different than others. There will always be minor setbacks. Learn to trust your gut. Only you can be accountable for your decisions.

FM: If there is anyone that you would love to work with, who would it be and why?

PV: Past: Marilyn Monroe. I liked her style and

how she related to her audience.

Present: Amal Alamuddin. She represents two new standards. Most importantly one for women around the world: to aspire to achieving their maximum personal growth potential, and secondly, for men around the world: when looking for a suitable partner. She is accomplished, intelligent and beautiful. She’s a triple threat that raises the bar!

FM: I love your style. How would you describe your personal style? Who would you say influenced it?

PV: My personal style is constantly evolving. I

often lean towards undertones of boho-chic with rock n’ roll influences. Lately, I find myself picking up more industrial pieces. (Could be Brooklyn’s influence on me.)

FM: What is your favourite current fashion trend for women? What is your all-time favourite look?

PV: I love that women are wearing colour again

on their faces. Colour is wonderful, and can really help showcase/enhance their features beautifully.

My all-time favourite look has to be a 60s-inspired hairstyle with a smokey eye and a pale lip.

To me, it never gets tired, and my clients from all over the world in every age group loves how it makes them feel.

FM: What’s next for Paul Venoit? What can we expect to see in the near future?

PV: Nobody knows what the future holds. Luckily there are many exciting projects on the burner.
