Trench coats, raincoats, and spring jackets are flooding store racks in other cities around the globe with warmer climates, which means, in most cases, there’s rain or fog involved. Even sunny places like California experience heavy fog from time to time during the spring.

Bye Bye, Winter. Hello, SPRING! We took a look at a cross section of countries around the world that are currently moving from winter into spring. We wanted to explore the fashion in these different regions during this time of year. Clearly, temperature has quite an impact. Here, in Ottawa, Canada, we recently had several heavy snowfalls and plenty of freezing rain. While this is not unusual for the season, it doesn’t occur every year. Our winter coats are not quite yet put away for the season, they linger by the front door, in case a spring-like day ends up being a winter wonderland.

Spring really is a melting pot of weather. We examined areas with temperatures ranging from -17 to 27 degrees celsius, and one thing more noticeable than others: there is a generation of guys that are fit and ready to start working on their tan lines (at the drop of a pant!) at the first sign of sunny weather. We are happy to share our findings through cool and hot fashion stories in this special men’s edition. Wherever you are in the world, just remember: no matter how long this transitional season takes, the warmer it gets, the closer you are to the summer heat! Here’s to a hot spring! Cheers!

Top5 with Ruben Tomas Q&A by Alcides Munoz

For our new readers who may not be familiar with Ruben Tomas’ work, it only takes a few minutes on rubentomas.com to be mesmerized by the beauty and caliber of the Spanish photographer’s artwork. Ruben Tomas is currently based L.A., so let’s find out how his new surroundings are providing inspiration.

No.

1

FM: You recently moved from New York City to Los Angeles. Can you share with us what influenced the move to the West Coast? How are your new surroundings inspiring you? RT: After almost 3 years living in NYC, I felt it was the

moment to move out and discover a completely different atmosphere. Even though my work is mostly in studio I feel

inspired by the sky and nature surrounding this beautiful place, and yes, being close to the beach.

FM: What do you feel was the biggest gain from your time in Europe that you still see in your artwork today? Having started my career while I living in Belgium, I attended a workshop of photography where my teacher really helped me to find

my visual language; to discover what and how I could express myself through images. I also had the chance to collaborate with amazing creatives, brands, and models. That helped me develop my career, create my signature, and go deep into who I am as human being.

FM: Let’s talk a bit about art direction. In our last edition, we featured the editorial Double Dorien (as seen on page 234, http://tinyurl.com/DoubleDorien) How did you come up with the concept? RT: I asked for a package from Ford Models NY as I was looking for a certain kind of male model for my portrait series. Dorien O was suggested to me. He has a very interesting look in his eyes; honest and calm at the same time . We did a beautiful photoshoot. A week after, his agent, Kati Brown, emailed me saying he had shaved his hair and asked if I would like to shoot him again. I then had the idea to photograph him before and after his change in look. I found it was very

interesting to create double images.

No.

FM: It is clear that you have an appreciation for all forms of art. When you’re not capturing the beauty of all sorts of artists, what’s your favourite activity to do to blow off steam? RT: I love swimming and exercise. I think the body is the temple of the soul.

Exercise helps me to be well-balanced and focused. I also love to go horseback riding in Griffith Park, being close to nature, and going to the beach. I also like to go to the cinema and museums.

4 No.

FM: Let’s finish up with a round of quick questions. What’s your favourite show on TV? Song you are listening to right now? Book? Food? Wardrobe item at the moment? RT: I don’t usually watch television, but I must say Stranger Things is the

5

last TV show I watched. It’s like going back to 80s and 90s cinema. I also enjoy watching nature documentaries. Music: I’m listening to the new The XX album, “I See You” and“Say Something Loving”. I’m also listening to some good rock garage from The Black Keys, “Never Gonna Give you Up”. Book: I love reading poems by Thich Nhat Hanh. Food: I love Japanese & Korean food. My wardrobe item at the moment is an Alexander Wang t-shirt from his last collection.

Top5 with Ryan Young Q&A by Alcides Munoz

FM: Ryan, you know I have to ask you about running. You’re known as the model who runs. What was it about getting on the treadmill that first time that led to your level of running now? RY: Since I first started running a few years ago, it’s really a blend of many things that keep me going. First and foremost it’s my time. Running is that time my phone goes on “Do Not Disturb.”

I work up a sweat, drop into the zone, and coach myself to let go of whatever thoughts come up. In that respect it’s similar to the time I spend meditating. But it’s also about setting goals, and, as Diana Nyad says, it’s about doing whatever it takes to “Find a Way” to achieve them. So, while that first run lasted ten minutes, I keep upping the time, the mileage, the speed… whatever the goals become, I keep upping them to test my body, mind, and potential.

FM: How has becoming a runner affected your modeling and vice versa? RY: I’ve always been fit and active, but since becoming a runner, my body has definitely changed. I’ve yet to find anything that sheds weight, tones the body, and produces results as quickly or dramatically as running. That being said, I started booking more

fitness related jobs when I started to run. Modeling and fitness go hand in hand for me. I know when I get in a solid run I feel great. I feel that it also comes through in my work.

FM: Let’s go back a little. You’ve been a model for almost two decades now. Congratulations! What do you feel sets you apart as a model that has contributed to such a great career? RY: Mostly that modeling is an extension of my life; it’s

something I love and enjoy. Rarely are two days working a booking ever the same. I love that. I love the diversity of the brands I’ve worked with, of the people I’ve met, and the places I’ve seen. Showing up, being a pleasant,

curious, engaging person ready to go with whatever is thrown my way is half the battle, but I think that stands for what industry we work in.

FM: Could you share one tip with our readers aspiring to be models on how to achieve longevity in the industry? RY: Love and use what makes you unique to set yourself apart. Over time, new faces come and go, but if we develop who we are and use

that to our benefit in an authentic way, I think there’s a much longer staying power.

FM: It is clear that you love travel. It takes one look at your schedule to see that the range of locations penciled in are very interesting and quite incredible. Have you given thought to where you’d love to go next? RY: This year, I’m setting out on a bit of a personal adventure: solo runs

I’ve mapped out across much of Cuba, Ethiopia and Bhutan. I tend to gravitate to places that I haven’t seen before, or ones that speak to my curiosity, whether that’s for political reasons, some new geography unearthed, or an interesting subculture I’ve only read about. There’s an ongoing list I keep of other destinations that I’m aching to get to: Greenland, Colombia, Myanmar, the Faroe Islands, Russia, Botswana, and Chile. Trust me, the list goes on and on.

The layroom or f nfants erribles

Unlike everyone else they had dealings with (mainly servants), brothers Zachary & Isaac had had a playroom for as long as they could remember. It was enormous and held captured secrets in every nook and cranny.

Photographer: Danny Khoo Models: Isaac Ezekiel George Mann & Zackary Delorme Watkins @ Model Co. International Makeup & Hair: Kyle Murray Stylists: John-Alex Becca Shaw-Tanner & Cindy Watkins

The abundance of toys was only superseded by the amount of clothing they had at their disposal. Many would have called them capricious, overindulged, and endowed with massive superiority complexes. They were just a result of circumstance and happenstance. Their ability to have whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted, wherever they wanted, created a world that ran parallel to reality. Their passion for fashion led them to create their outfits based upon style icons such as Spandau Ballet (a band from the 80s), Karl Lagerfeld, and many of their day’s creations were borne by the collision of unaligned references. For example, Duran Duran with Olivia Newton-John. Their love for each other was only outweighed by the competitiveness they had for creating the perfect outfit. The judges were one of their “reality checks”. These came via Instagram - another faceless and virtual interaction with others. The number of “likes” and “comments” were like food for their souls. Unadulterated narcissism would be the judgement of others, but these two lived a life of self-indulgent bliss in the playroom; unaware that they were even being be judged. Ignorance, for them, was truly bliss.
