FASHION WEEKLY TALKS

Designer Kara Chiconi from IdleBird Fashionistas don't need to compromise on glamour this summer as they can beat the burn with a sexy new sunsmart collection from IdleBird, and still look smoking hot. IdleBird's new UPF50+ fashion collection has turned up the heat for women who take heed of the sun-safe message but don't want to sacrifice on style. We sat down with designer, Kara Chiconi to talk about re-inventing the rules for resort wear.

Congratulations on your label, IdleBird. What is the inspiration behind this new venture? Last summer I was searching for some type of garment that I could wear all day, regardless of what I was doing. If I'm at home or on holidays that could mean spending time at the beach or pool, jumping in the car and going to the shops or stopping for lunch at a cafe, the park with the kids and so forth. I found that I was making three costume changes a day! The biggest effort was finding something that would allow me to be in the outdoors protected from the sun and still look fashionable. I just couldn't find anything so I decided I'd make my own. Now I've seen IdleBird garments popping up on ladies everywhere from parks, at my kids swimming lessons and while standing at water's edge at the beach. It is really gratifying. How important is travel, music, art and culture to your design inspiration? All these creative elements are just part of everyday life for my family and I. We spent last summer in Europe and this time it had a big impact on the design for the first pieces. I took samples with me and wore them constantly which influenced the final designs immensely. 7

Can you describe the collection in three words? Innovative, versatile and fun. What is so special about IdleBird? It offers a solution to a woman's two biggest concerns - looking fashionable and doing the best for our skin and health. Obviously the idea of sun protection clothing is not new, but I like to think that IdleBird is forging a new market, offering a mid point between a cotton kaftan and full ankle to neck rashie. Who is the IdleBird woman? She is a woman who has the confidence to say - I want to protect my skin but I don't want to completely sacrifice glamour. The very nature of the designs are they they are really versatile, which means they are not pretending to be high end fashion. They appeal to women from a wide range of age groups - I've had ladies in their early twenties and seventies all buying the same design. Do you think women are becoming more aware of the damaging effects of sun exposure? Definitely. The growth of the skin care industry is surely proof of this. I think that women want to look their best and stay healthy for as long as possible and will look for simple effective measures that they can take.

You are offering women poolside pizzaz with quality fabrics that offer UPF50+ protection and are quick dry and chlorine resistant. Do you think you are re-inventing the rules for resort wear? I guess we are ... the response to the collection would also suggest that women believe it is time to change the rules about resort wear. There is no question that as we have become more conscious about the effects of the sun on our skin and we will naturally look for all options for protection. IdleBird came about because it just seemed logical that the clothes that we wear while we enjoy the outdoors should offer the best protection possible. What most people don't realise is that the average white t-shirt or cover up that they wear in the sun only offers between about 5 - 15 UPF. Do you have a favourite piece from the collection? My favourite piece from a design perspective is the Here Come the Sunshirt as it is just so practical. But the one that I wear most is The Charlene because it is incredibly lightweight and easy to wear which fits with my hectic lifestyle. What's next for you? I'm in production now for a late summer release of the next designs. This will round out the collection with pants, shorts and some more great tops and tunics. The full range will then be taken to the US for launch for their summer 2015. Then we'll be doing more fabric research and looking to take the UPF50+ technology into prints and colours so we can expand the range.

BEAUTY CONFESSIONS

Save your own Skin “Hearing the word 'cancer' really scares you." As always, Slip, Slop, Slap is the way to go this summer, but what about Vitamin D? Well, let us introduce you to Australia's own Solar D - a world first sunscreen to offer maximum sun protection with SPF30 and SPF50, while permitting a percentage of these vitamin D forming wavelengths through to the skin. Solar D Ambassador and Miss Universe Australia 2012 winner, Renae Ayris talks to us about the importance of sun protection and her cancer scare at the age of fourteen. Can you tell us about the cancer scare you had when you were younger?

14

I was actually around fourteen at the time. I went for a “spot scan check”, as my skin is quite freckly and prone to darker sun spots etc. The specialist removed the spot straight away and the cells came back as “pre-cancerous”. I am not really sure how serious this was, but anything with that word in it scares you, so I have been vigilant ever since.

How has that experience increased your awareness about sun protection? As I previously mentioned, just hearing the word “cancer really scares you, so it certainly ensured that I became much more aware of sun exposure. What do you love about Solar D? Although now generally people are well aware of sun protection, education of the need for Vitamin D is increasing. The fact that Solar D will let in the safe rays, which are vital for your health, whilst protecting you from the bad stuff; it doesn't get better than that. What advice would you give someone who doesn't regularly slip, slop, slap? It is a sad fact that most people take some kind of scare to really take a message in. Of course I would advise everyone that it is so important to protect yourself from our harsh sun, but the message needs to be out there more in the media and probably in schools for the message to really sink in. e are a few days into the New Year and on the top of our list is health, fitness and weigh management along with many other fresh goals and resolutions. But sometimes our priorities fall by the wayside when things gets tough. While food can be a factor in weight loss and management, beverages can also play an important part. Soft drinks and alcohol - with their high sugar content - will sabotage the best laid health or diet plans, so it's important to substitute these for something enjoyable to drink that will benefit the body, not stress it. This is why adding green tea to your diet after indulging in the festive season can help you achieve a healthier, stress free body. Qi Organic Detox Green Tea is a delicious blend of milk thistle, dandelion root, ginger, lemon, with a hint of peppermint. These ingredients were chosen for their reputed ability to help restore the body's natural balance by flushing out accumulated toxins and helping to improve digestion. Detox tea acts as a mild assistance to the body's natural processes and it is safe to consume one to five cups per day. The diuretic ingredients affect everyone differently so it's important to be conscious of this and lost fluids should be replaced with plain water. Universal Village is the Australasian distributor of Qi Tea and director Nicole Lamond Philp says Detox tea is the most popular tea and she even receives fan mail from individuals whose health has been changed for the better as a result of regular drinking. “I've had customers tell me their liver, stomach and digestion problems have subsided. Some have even said Detox tea assisted with their weight loss and helped manage their diabetes. The health benefits from green tea are many and varied but what our customers love most about Detox tea is the taste – it's not overpowering and it's easy to drink. It's a delicious, healthy tea that can be enjoyed hot or cold and has no calories or sugar,” she says. Qi Organic Detox Green Tea is available at Woolworths, select IGA Supermarkets, Foodworks and premium organic grocers – RRP $4.99.

The Organic Wonder

Therese Kerr

Ambassador of Australian Organic and Founder of Divine by Therese Kerr

Why organic? Because it is on the rise and has never been bigger. The organic industry is making some noise with its national value at over $1.72 billion. Specifically speaking, organic cosmetics are in demand and their increase is has grabbed our attention. We sat down with Ambassador Therese Kerr as she shared her insightful view about the buzz that is surrounding the growing organic beauty industry. There has been incredible growth in organic cosmetics. Why do you think Australians are becoming more conscious about purchasing safer products? There is definitely a conscious shift occurring, as consumers become more discerning as well as more consciously aware of our connection to all living things. Consumers are becoming more skeptical in relation to the high use of chemicals in everyday skin, hair, beauty and personal care products and thankfully, people are becoming more educated as there is an army of wellness people, just like myself, determined more than ever, not to just sit back and allow this to continue. Do you believe the organic industry will continue to grow? Unequivocally yes. With demand for certified organic “healthy products globally at $7.6 billion in 2012 and projected at $13.2 billion in sales by 2018, it's little wonder mainstream cosmetic companies are transitioning to certified organic! In Australia, the annual growth in organic cosmetics and toiletries, alone, is at about 18%. 30

What are the benefits of shopping organically? There are so many benefits of buying only certified organic products and produce but importantly, certified organic products are not only a safer and better option for human beings, but also for our planet. Do you think we have a social responsibility to become more actively involved in the organic industry? Most definitely. I believe the gravity of what we have done to our health, the health of future generations and to the health of our planet through consumerism and ignorance in relation to allowing untested chemicals to be used in our society, will be realised in a very short period of time. In saying that, there is no blame here; people simply know what they know and don't want what they don't know. I was the same, but once you learn this and start to delve into it yourself, there is no unlearning. As more and more people become aware of the impacts of these untested chemicals on our health, future generations and our environment, we will look back and think what on earth were we thinking. In your own words, why should our readers purchase organic products? When you purchase certified organic products, produce and food, you support your local community, you impact food miles, you reduce pesticide, insecticide and chemical exposure and you support our planet and the next generation/s that follow.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world‌ In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.
