The locals tell me not to fear It happens at least once a year When hell is full the dead will walk the Earth and Apparently they come up here For the beer! -VOLTAIRE-

What is the Day of the Death? In several latin american countries, Day of the Death is regarded as a celebration when the death are remembered and the living celebrate another day of being alive, even though several places celebrate it, it has come to be regarded as one of Mexico’s most important celebrations. Mexicans mock and respect death on this glorious day; ofrendas are created and the death are remembered. Fashion Teller House has decided to share some stories from Mexico that somehow deal with death and the mystique that comes with it.

The Fashion Teller House is very proud to present:

“DIA DE LOS MUERTOS”

La Catrina has been associated with Dia de Los Muertos since Posada sketched her in the revolutionary years; she represents both sides of the wealthy classes in Mexico at the time of Porfirio Diaz Ordaz’s dictatorship, while wealthy and heavily attaviated, she is pale and bony representing the struggles to get the people into a financial stability when re reigning class repressed the poor, were corrupt, extravagant and obsessed with all European, nowadays, the Catrina is the symbol of unity in a world that slowly seems to be taking over by other traditions.

This legend has been recounted so many times by so many different people in Mexico, but the myth remains, a woman so beautiful that fell in love with a man, after some time of courtship they ended up getting married, and not long after she got pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful girl; years later the woman had a son, but around that time she found out about her husband’s nefarious affairs, more than once has he cheated on her. Blinded by rage and jealousy, she grabbed the kids and took them to the river, where she drowned them; after the fact she went crazy, carrying their bodies around town crying out “¡Ay! ¡Mis hijos!” (Woe! My children!) It is said that even to this day, you can still hear her cry out for her children near rivers and lakes.

On a normal night in the streets of Mexico city, back in its colonial days, a couple of musicians were roaming the streets downtown, singing and laughing when they were called in by a servant to play at a special party; the time was off and the space was an empty palacette in the middle of Colonia Condesa, they were led into a large room at the basement of the house. for several hours they played and laughed with the people, however no lights ever came on and all they could see were shadows. Suddenly one of the attendants approached and they noticed flames instead of eyeballs. When dawn began to break the shadows disappeared and the musicians were led outside, upon coming out of the door, they were blinded by sunlight and when they turned around, they saw that the palacette was gone‌ They had played a gig in hell.

For over 20 years a play has been in the theaters of Mexico City, this play has become a staple in the community, almost every Mexican has gone seen it. Legend says that a woman dressed in black with a veil over her face has been showing up on the stage for over twenty years, between the halls, on the seats while two people tell the story on stage, while the story has been written by Stephen Malatratt and has now been taken mass market by the 2012 film with Daniel Radcliffe, the story of the Woman in Black is one that should be lived.

Now, toreros may be more of a Spanish tradition that carried over to Mexico and remained as one of the long standing colonial traditions in modern Mexico, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a part of it’s culture and folklore. The toreros constantly face death, they battle it and come out triumphant from each fight with the bull. The torera is a representation of Dia de los Muertos, because in the end, it both worships and mocks death every time she faces a new bull.

As he walks down the street, the world around him seems to fit, his whole self completely embellished and the ladies at his feet. The Dandy, in folklore, is that men all women want but none are able to get, the womanizer, that mysterious gentleman that walks from side to side, that moves across the room and makes every heart swoon to the point that even death herself wants that man she knows she can’t have.

And fame was never kind to queens Neither was Death as she looked on the revolution fueling on the ideals of a broken queen. Marie Antoinette stood firm as Death showed up before her. Held her head high and unafraid as Death announced her faith. “No more cakes or parties for you my dearest queen, not in this life. Your time has come to join my ranks, and party like a socialite Marie Antoinette knew her time had come, her hair turned white overnight, and as her head rolled one last time she sighed and then smiled. Now Marie Antoinette and Death have parties with patisseries and croissants sharing a kind and happy moment with everyone Death brings by.

Many things could be said about the woman that dresses it white, some people believe she represents death, some others think that she represents an omen when she shows up. It is believed that she hangs around places and people prone to death and misfortune, sometimes saves them, some others she doesn’t. Be careful if she shows up near you, or if you someone tells you they have seen her, because perhaps it means something.

Mexico has had a long standing relationship with dame Death, constantly facing her and always mocking her. Dia de los Muertos is just that, both a praise and ceremony for the respect the Mexican population has for Death as well as a moment in which all those who are still here and alive can mock death for she has not being able to take them.
