dating editor’ s note

november 2011 | editor’s note his time of year flies — I cannot believe it’s already November and here we are ushering in the holiday season! With Thanksgiving around the corner, I can already smell the turkey and taste the traditional pumpkin pie. The best part of this time of year is all of the reasons to gather with family and friends, to share old traditions and make new ones! During November each year, you may have noticed an abundant amount of moustaches sprouting from men’s faces. “Movember” is responsible for these moustaches, which takes place in the US and around the world during the month of November. With the mo’s these men grow, they raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. This November I’m joining with my boyfriend and thousands of other men and women in efforts to raise awareness & funds for men’s health through Movember. Yes, women can help, too, as a mo-sista! We all have a guy friend, boyfriend, husband, father, brother, the list goes on, and we might as well rally with these men and support their mo’s! If you’re interested in joining in the movement go to www. movember.com. There are so many ways to make a difference in our communities and in this world, and I couldn’t help but share this one! Now that the men in San Diego will be rocking a new confidence with their mo’s this month, rock with them. Take some time in this busy month to enjoy the music! San Diego is the home of many amazing musicians and bands. Some of my personal favorites are Jason Mraz, Switchfoot and Tristan Prettyman. The music scene in San Diego always has something to offer for everyone from coffee shop shows to the big stages. I personally love the Belly Up Tavern, an internationally acclaimed venue right here in our backyard of Solana Beach. There are more than enough festive and fun things to keep you busy this November. Whatever may be filling your calendar, I hope that you’re able to make some time for yourself. Enjoy some fall shopping, a great concert and most importantly, a fabulous and very filling Thanksgiving!

Steven Branon started out his life with the ambition to be a musician and a photographer. His passion for photography really took off around the time he was traveling the world as Kevin Mack’s guitarist. As a photographer, he specializes in several genres including fashion, portraits and nightlife. According to Branon, “I always have fun shooting new projects and being a part of something that isn't about me but the growing fashion scene in San Diego. The Fashion 5.0 team has a great spirit about them.”

Julie Zorrilla started musically at age five, when she began studying classical piano. However, not too long after her eighth birthday her family left Colombia for a better life in America. She has maintained her passion for music and earlier this year, as a contestant on American Idol, she finished top 12 among the women. According to Zorrilla, “Working with the Fashion 5.0 team was absolutely a blast! Their dedication to the artistic process was incredibly inspiring to witness.”

Passion, tenacity and ability describe our Beauty Editor Meagan Brown and her dedication to the dynamic world of makeup artistry. She also owns a mobile tanning business and works often on commercials, photo shoots, TV productions and press functions. According to Brown, “Working with Fashion 5.0 has definitely been a fun experience. I think the best part has been being a part of a team we have created as each issue has come along. Fashion 5.0’s team of experts is definitely San Diego's finest.”

LOVE WHAT YOU DO HOW To LAND YOUR DREAM JOB By alexis delchiaro

I’m sure if you were to ask my mom, she would say that I came out of the womb talking up a storm and telling stories. While that may or may not be true, it wasn’t actually until the fifth grade that I discovered my desire for a career in journalism. Mr. Landis, my music teacher, gave the class a mock newscast assignment and I was the anchor. I thought, Hey! This is so fun and something I’m really good at! From then on, I knew I’d discovered my passion.

ALEXIS DELCHIARO photo By Nia Uhlenhake

Alexis is a California girl through and through. A native of Sacramento, she is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a major in communications and a minor in Spanish. Last fall, Alexis joined KUSI News, San Diego’s News Channel, as the coanchor of Good Morning San Diego, weekdays from 5-10 a.m. Alexis has been fortunate to cover a wide range of stories in her career, from interviewing American Idol contestants to trying out for So You Think You Can Dance to touring the Grand Canyon by helicopter. Alexis also had the opportunity to fly with the US Navy’s prestigious Blue Angels and to skydive with the elite US Army Golden Knights. Alexis would love to hear from you! Email, Twitter and Facebook info can be found on www.AlexisDelChiaro.com.

alexis delchiaro Kusi News Good Morning San Diego Anchor UCSB Alum Major: Communications Pictured with Chris Evan at KUSI

The journey from Mr. Landis’ newscast to working as a television anchor on Good Morning San Diego has been both exciting and challenging. At times, it is downright exhausting. Does a person ever really get used to waking up at 3 a.m.? Either way I think I’m ridiculously lucky because I’ve landed my dream job. Every morning viewers let me into their homes and invite me to be a part of their lives. How cool is that? So whether you want to be a news anchor like me or your dream job is something completely different, don’t give up until you get there! Here are few things to help you along, so that you too can find your dream job.

1 Be Passionate

Since everybody has to work to make money to survive, why not choose something that you love? Although I was lucky to realize my passion early on, this is not always the case. Get an internship, volunteer, join a club and do whatever it takes to put yourself out there so you can discover what you want to do. You’ll never know what you love or don’t love until you try it! I have tried just about every internship the TV world has to offer, which proved helpful in eventually becoming an anchor. I also quickly realized my forte was not as a casting assistant, audio engineer or promotions writer! Like Oprah always says, find something you love doing and you’ll find a way to make money doing it.

2 Believe in Yourself

I’ve had my fair share of rejections but learned that it’s all part of the journey. A few months after graduation from UCSB, I had my heart set on landing my first on-air job in Palm Springs. Turns out the news director didn’t share my feelings. I believe her exact words were, “While I see quite a bit of potential in you, Alexis, you’re just not ready to work here. You’re still a little too green.” I was devastated! How would I ever become an anchor now? The answer was to hone in on my skills and just keep at it. And it worked! A few months later, I was hired on as the morning weather anchor in Yuma, Arizona, and that was how I got my feet wet in the news biz. (Just for the record, that news director in Palm Springs was totally right. I was way too “green” to be on air. That’s a term we use in the biz to politely say, “You are so not ready to be on TV yet.”)

3 Let Your Light Shine

Once you have landed your dream job, or at least a job that will get you there someday, let your inner star shine! When I was named the morning show host of Fox in Phoenix I was scared out of my mind! My two coanchors had been on air longer that I had been alive. How could I ever compete with that? The truth was that I didn’t have to. I was hired on to bring something new and fresh and full of life to the show. My news director didn’t want to hire what he already had – he wanted me! Once I realized that I let loose. Now I have no reservations about jumping in a pit of mud, dancing in a leotard or being hypnotized all while on air (yes, those are things I’ve done on live TV). I am free to be exactly who I am and proud of it.

The House of Blues is a venue where food, music and art intersect. Radiating positive energy from the vibrations of the music hall to the art that covers the walls and ceilings, any night of the week becomes a special occasion on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp. Start the night off by noshing with friends at Crossroads at House of Blues restaurant. Featuring a revamped menu by Food Network star Aaron Sanchez, Crossroads offers a variety of international dishes and twists on classic flavors. Start the night off with happy hour (daily from 4-7 p.m.) and a cheesy flatbread appetizer. Even fries are made original with a variety of dipping sauces including spicy chipotle ketchup, herbed mayonnaise

and refreshing mango mustard. As day turns into night the Voodoo Stage lights up with free music ranging from local brews and grooves on Tuesdays to flashback Wednesdays with a rocking cover band. Enjoy the jams and chow on the famous Juicy Lucy burger, a burger patty stuffed with Gruyere cheese and topped with pickled jalapenos for celebrity chef Sanchez’s signature spicy kick. Their short ribs showcase a signature chipotle glaze, contrasted with a sweet corn pudding that arouses sentiments of the South. Southern roots are subtly displayed throughout the House of Blues, particularly on the famous beaded wall. Made entirely of authentic New Orleans Mardi Gras beads, the wall was

meticulously crafted with good fortune in mind, and no bad luck numbers are to be found. An inside bit of trivia is that under the main stage of the music hall is a box of mud from the Mississippi delta. To further drive home HOB’s southern roots is Gospel Brunch, featured on one Sunday a month. A traditional gospel choir performs in full garb, warming your soul, while a Southern style all-you-can-eat brunch warms your tummy. With two levels in the music hall, special events and private parties can be booked in advance. Jake’s Lounge is the VIP area for bottle service and unobstructed views of performers. Tickets to most shows can be purchased online in advance through Live Nation.

A short walk from north county’s sandy beaches, the Belly Up Tavern is a classic live music venue located in the heart of the Cedros Avenue Design District of Solana Beach. Venue walls are covered with photographed memories of special nights passed as Belly Up artists from Ludacris to Jonny Lang are commemorated. With live events almost every night of the week, the concert hall will have you laughing to the comedy of Jay and Silent Bob or grooving on your feet to funk, indie, reggae and the blues. Purchase a block of tickets and reserve a special loft area for a holiday or birthday event. The restaurant at Belly Up, the Wild Note Café, is available for a warm meal and cool drink before a night of jamming to your favorite artist. With strong drinks and great appetizers for splitting, dining at Wild Note allows you and your group to transition from afternoon to night without having to hail a cab. The restaurant staff is friendly and helpful and the dog-friendly patio out front allows for afternoon people watching as you fuel up after a day at the beach. The sea bass is a menu classic from Chef “Izzy” Balderas. Finish off your meal with the key lime pie made from authentic key limes to taste a bite of heaven by the beach!

dating other date except that you might be the entertainment portion of it. Karaoke is more than just going to a bar and watching a bunch of people make a fool out of themselves these days. Carefully choosing an upbeat and well-known song is not only safe but can be another way to express your feelings for your lover. So unleash your inner American Idol and grab the microphone to make a special dedication to your date, which I am sure they will remember forever! Check out the 710 Beach Club in Pacific Beach on Thursday nights for San Diego’s original live band karaoke Rock Out Karaoke!

3 Share Music

This is a very simple date, but the cool thing about it is that you can do it virtually anywhere. At the same time, you can learn about your date’s musical tastes and interests. Choose about ten songs each and make sure to pay attention and listen to why they selected each song. This tip may come in handy for future dates such as going to concerts. Also, who knows, maybe a dance move or two may come about?

4 Rock Out

musical dates get your song on! By Jillian marie Dyer

1 Hello Rico Suave

Looking for a way to get closer to your date? Try dancing the old-fashioned way where no freestyle bump and grind you do at the clubs is allowed! To heat up the dance floor with your sweetie, there are several different styles of couples dancing including salsa, tango, swing and ballroom. Dance lessons are a little too intimate for a first date, so give them a try on the fourth or fifth. Check out local hot spots Café Sevilla and Sway Nightclub for some Latin flavor, or get your groove on with VAVi Sport and Social Club that offers a variety of dancing options at a low cost! Either way you will be sweeping your date off their feet, guaranteed!

2 Sing Your Heart Out

Ever considered karaoke for a date night? Before you laugh this one off, consider that karaoke is actually a humorous way to show your date you’re not afraid to let your guard down. Going on this type of musical date is just like any

Going to a concert is the perfect date because of everything it involves! Live entertainment and great constant conversation can lead to some intimacy! Break that touch barrier by holding hands, dancing with your man and maybe even some PDA! Make sure you pick a concert that you both like. This way whenever your date hears that band again, they will instantly think of the great time you guys had. Although Jason Mraz is sold out, Simple Plan on November 2 or Senses Fail on November 15 at the House of Blues San Diego are great options.

5 Date Remix

Tired of the standard dinner and a movie date routine? Why not get all dressed up and show off your date at the theater instead! The theater is twenty times better than going to the movies because it is very romantic and there is an element of excitement that isn’t always there when watching a movie. Going to the theater will make you appear cultured and mature in an elaborately beautiful and relaxed atmosphere. Why not explore and try something new with your significant other? San Diego has many extraordinary options including The Old Globe, Balboa Theatre and the San Diego Civic Theatre. This date will certainly make sparks fly!

6 Mr. Saxophone

If you are musically gifted and can play an instrument such as a piano, guitar, or even rock a harmonica, use it to your advantage. Get your creative juices flowing and compose a song or poem for your lover! Not only is it personalized and coming from the heart, it will be appreciated a lot more.

Bonus tip: Music venue The Casbah, open since 1989, has hosted greats such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Rocket From The Crypt.

“Make It Mine.” His music has transcended from the radio and concerts to being featured in television shows such as So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, The Sing Off, The Voice and Glee. In the future, Mraz wishes to collaborate with one of three particular musicians. “I'd really love to work with Willie Nelson, Neil Young or Paul McCartney,” said Mraz in an interview with Entertainment News. According to Mraz, these musicians are “guys that are still making great records, still making great songs.” Mraz recently made headlines when he told the media back in December of 2010 that he would not wed his fiancée at the time, Tristan Prettyman, until gay marriage was legalized.

“...I really want the message of healing to thrive and transcend all ages.”

"We both feel that in our engagement, we have a union that's really special and can’t be broken. It's a sacred bond. The wedding would be nice for our family, our friends, our community — our moms especially — and so it puts us in the fight. We can't get married until [gay] marriage is legal and equal…I think giving people the right to marry will be a huge movement in civil rights," Mraz explained at Elton John's Concert to Benefit the American Foundation for Equal Rights in Beverly Hills.

That was only the case until June 2011, when Mraz announced their breakup. "My greatest mistake right now is, I've been clinging to my art," said Mraz in a TMI interview. "In that, I have victory for my art and a great loss for my heart. At the moment, my beautiful fiancée is no longer my beautiful fiancée."

It’s hard to believe that Julie Zorrilla is only twenty years old with her confident stage presence and total rock-star persona. Not only is she an amazing musician, she is also established in the fashion world with her funky style and unique jewelry designs. At the young age of four, she began singing and playing piano and has continued loving music ever since. After listening to the legendary Michael Jackson, her first inspiration to pursue a career in music, Zorrilla’s true

talent was finally discovered when she sang in front of millions on American Idol’s Season 10. Though being on Idol was an experience of a lifetime, it was only the beginning of her career as an artist. Zorrilla’s good fashion sense definitely paid off during her initial audition with the judges when her unique gold shoes wooed Jennifer Lopez. outfit planned out for my initial audition when I first made it to the judges, but soon as I saw the sparkly shoes that J.Lo later went crazy over, I changed my outfit because I was like "That is so me! That is the color of my soul!" As soon as I walked in, J.Lo commented on my shoes. It was fun because it was a good icebreaker between her and I, and we always kind of had that special fashion connection after that.

Currently, Zorrilla lives in Los Angeles where she spends most of her energy writing songs. “At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about,” she said. “I think nowadays what we’re really missing in our mainstream music is timeless music, and I want to be able to bring that back.” Julie Zorrilla has her eye set on the finish line and is already well on her journey to success. We sat down with Zorrilla inside the House of Blues San Diego after her Fashion 5.0 photo shoot and here's what she had to say. What prompted you to try out for American Idol? My teachers in school actually were the ones who really encouraged me to do it. I never wanted to try out for American Idol, nor did I ever really think I’d ever really make it that far. But I’m definitely really glad I did it and I’m thankful to my teachers that they pushed me as hard as they did. Is there something that stood out to you while on the show? Was there memory or person that touched your life? The week that we went to Vegas and we got to perform Beatles music on the stage of the Beatles LOVE Show at the Mirage was unbelievable! I moved to LA to meet Jimmy Iovine, one of the most legendary music producers of all time. Meeting him was definitely the most rewarding thing. It was like a dream come true! How was meeting Jennifer Lopez in person? It was amazing meeting her! J.Lo is someone you look up to for her fashion sense. I actually had an entirely different

Earlier you showed me your bracelets. You mentioned something about your jewelry line? I have this jewelry line that I’m working on right now. I have over 100 pieces designed. I think that if I wasn’t a musician I think I’d be a stylist or designer or work with something in fashion cause I just love it! I wanted to be able to express myself creatively and that was the whole point of the line. What is one fashion must-have piece that you could never go without? Well I can’t go without rings, I feel naked without them. Do you have a secret crush? I do! I actually I fell in love with Joel Edgerton after watching Warrior. No joke. I’m in love with him in that movie! If you could perform on stage with one person, who would that be? Michael Jackson! Everything about him is just unique and special. My dad introduced me to his music when I was four years old when I first started playing piano. I grew up in the Andes and we didn’t have a lot of technology, but we did have a TV and the only thing I used it for was to play Michael Jackson videos all day. Did Michael Jackson inspire your music? Completely! Even though I wouldn’t necessarily compare myself to him at all as an artist, he has inspired me. There are no words for Michael. What’s going on with your music? I’ve been writing a lot. That’s honestly mainly what I’ve been focusing on is writing great songs. At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about. I really take a lot of time making sure there’s a lot of musical integrity. It is commercial music that can be played on top 40 Radio, but musical enough so that musicians as well can appreciate it. I think nowadays what we’re really missing in the mainstream is timeless music and I want to be able to bring that back! Do you have any shout outs? Shout out to Fashion 5.0 for sure! And my parents, I love them! And of course Michael Jackson! My parents are the people that have inspired me most in my life. I appreciate everything they’ve done and gone through for me and my brother to make sure we’ve had all these opportunities. Everything that I do and everything I have and that I am, I owe to them.

Vokab Kompany’s music is best described as “electronic, soulinfluenced hip hop.” Awarded “Best Hip-Hop Album of 2010” by the San Diego Music Awards, Vokab Kompany continues to carry the title, as they won the same award in 2011. Though vocalists Rob Hurt and Matt Burke rock the mics, this eight-member band does much more beyond singing. The eclectic sound is comprised of a variety of instruments including the bass, drums, keyboard, sax and violin. Stilt walkers, burlesque dancers, clowns and belly dancers are often incorporated into the shows, setting them apart from most electronic bands.

What have you been up to recently? Robbie: We just landed a track called “Burn It Down” (produced by Crush Effect) in a new commercial spot for Southern Comfort's new Fiery Pepper, which they partnered up with Tabasco to make. You can check it out on YouTube. The new traffic we’ve seen has been very cool. The is the second time we’ve had a music feature in a major commercial. Last summer it was our song “So Bright.” Right now we’re working on a ton of music including a new album where we’re teaming up with Crush Effect and another VK album. We’re currently touring with our latest album Quit Sleep. Oh, and also, Prince Harry — yeah, like The Prince — was in at-

tendance at our last show and we got him a CD, he said he liked the music. What kind of experience is a Vokab show? Robbie: A live show is our #1 product! We are a sevenpiece full band and guest feature additional vocalists and musicians. We have a live electric violinist, two lead vocals and back-up vocals, drums, bass, and keyboard-synth along with guitar. It’s been described as high energy live electro, hip hop with a touch of soul, and even a little bluegrass. How do your San Diego fans support you? Burkey: By the six degrees of separation law, they have faithfully come out for years now, and made sure

we were on the tip of their tongues, Facebook reposts and the lot to continue our spread. I'm sure we initially were introduced to y'all at Fashion 5.0 within that formula... without them there would be no crowd. Fashion 5.0: Shout outs? Robbie & Burkey: SDCM, Night Access, LED, DiscoverSD, TK Presents, DDJ, The Belly Up, Winston's, our pals at the Rubicon Deli, 91X, 94.9, Headphones.com, Jim Beam, Southern Comfort, Nika Water, all the individuals who believe in us, our producers and DJs we work with, our wives, spouses and friends and especially our live band! When did you first start writing songs and singing? I started teaching myself to play guitar when I was about fifteen. From there it just took some time, about three years till what I was playing actually sounded tolerable. I always loved writing, and have kept a journal since I was eight years old. Once I started composing on the guitar the songwriting came easy for me. When I was about twenty I started to play shows and put myself out there with the help and encouragement from my friends and family. From there it just grew slow and organic and at a real nice pace. When you’re not singing what do you like to do? I love being at home. I recently remodeled the house that we grew up in with my dad. It's the house I was brought home to when I was born, the house my mom was pregnant with me in. So there is a lot of nurturing energy here (at home). It's definitely softened me in a really strange way, I've become quite the homebody. When I'm home, it feels like time stops. But when I get a little stir crazy, I am usually at yoga or surfing.

Even though your music career has taken off, do you still have time to continue surfing? I do. I actually took the last three years off to just chill out and spend time with friends and family. After I toured on my last record, Hello…x, I needed a break. At the time, I had been on tour for about five years, and had put out two records. I was twenty-seven and feeling a little disconnected. So I decided to just take a break, chill out, rest up, recharge and get connected again. During that time I traveled quite a bit, Bali, Australia, Europe, and I did a lot of surfing, I got really into yoga, and I am actually about to finish up a yoga teacher training. The time off has allowed me to just live life and do the things I love, and then from the simple act of living, and being in the flow, the music always seems to just come naturally. For me the two go hand in hand, and I have to have a balance. Did you dream about being a model or a musician as a child? Never. When I was younger, I had no idea what I wanted to be, and once I got into surfing, I really wanted to be a sales rep for a surf company. I interned at a couple surf magazines and worked for some reps in town. Music was always a hobby, I never put it together that I could or would ever do

sic and the lyrics. I feel like I am channeling something bigger, something that will hopefully reach a larger audience and inspire people to wake up and start living the life they were meant to be living, the life of their dreams. I want to be a reminder for people to dream big, bigger than they could ever imagine. We are limitless.

it as a living. The modeling was really random too, I was about fifteen and just coming out of a really dorky akward growth spurt. So I think it excited me that I could model. It was good for my self esteem, but in the end music stole the show, my heart, and the rest is history. How did you transition from being a model [for Roxy] into a musician? I took a trip to Europe when I was twenty and went backpacking around Europe with one of my best friends. While there I ate everything, I mean everything. Every croissant and panini and gelato and wine. We really went for it. When I came home I was about ten pounds heavier and the head of the modeling agency, was like Uhhh…. Hmmm… I had just come back from this wonderful trip, and now was told I needed to drop fifteen pounds. I had a moment where I was like F' it. I just want to live it up and have a good time with life, I was still pretty thin, regardless, and I just decided it wasn't worth it, music was kinda taking off at the time, and that was way more creative, challenging, exciting and inspiring for me. What inspires you most with your writing? I love writing from experiences, but lately I have really enjoyed just tuning in to my inner dialogue. I love observing, whether it's me observing myself, or other peoples' situations. Life in general is inspiring. I love watching movies and TV shows and letting scenes and moments inspire me. There is so much out there, for me it's really about taking the time to tune in and listen to what song wants to be written, and what it wants to say. Writing this new record has been really interesting in that I feel like I am writing from a much more unlimited space. It's not just about me anymore, I am writing the songs FOR the girls across the world, not just writing something for me, and hoping it resonates with someone somewhere. It's been pretty cool to just get out of my own way, and just be a vessel for the mu-

What have you been up to so far in 2011? A lot of yoga, and a lot of writing. I also had voice surgery about a year ago, because I had two polyps on my vocal chords. So this year has been a lot of post-surgery therapy and vocal coaching to get my voice back to where it was, and now it's at a place where it's actually better and stronger than it's ever been. I've been pretty busy this year so far, but still have time for surf and yoga. When life gets stressful, where is your safe haven or getaway place? The yoga mat, or the ocean. Even just sitting on the beach and laying in the sand. A blanket and the beach is the dreamiest, most relaxing place on the planet for me. Anywhere near water really. What is your favorite city to tour in? Does one city or show hold special memories? Wow. That is a tough question to answer. I have been so many places all around the world. I really love Japan. It's a trip, and it's so jam packed full of adventure, fun and shows. We did a show on the beach in Portugal a couple years ago, that was pretty amazing. I also love when I get to go to San Francisco because my brother lives there. Anywhere where we have friends in town is always a real treat. Do you plan to play in San Diego anytime soon? I am about to go into the studio to record this next record and if all goes accordingly it will be out by March, and then I will start touring, so I will definitely be doing a show in SD on that tour. Probably in the spring. Sometimes I do surprise shows, Twitter [@tprettyman] is usually a good place to catch the updates on those. Do you have any shout outs? Shout outs! To my mom and dad, and my bests Ashley and Megan. Shout out to Leah and my Yoga Tropics family, and my friend Kish who has been the best coach and friend a girl could have.

PINTO

break out artist of the year

Mike Pinto is well known by his distinct voice and lyrics. He pours himself into his music and views writing songs as a way of storytelling.

The band is comprised of Pinto on vocals and guitar, Matt Brein on bass and Todd Elrod on drums. Pinto’s selftitled album sold tens of thousands of copies worldwide. It was so well received that Pinto came out with an acoustic version of the album, Everything I Got, soon after. We met up with Pinto after his last tour to check in and see what he has going on next.

NOVEMBER 2011 // fashionfivEo.com

What kind of stories do you like to tell best in your music? Mike Pinto: I really enjoy stories about the struggles of underdogs, and their attempts to overcome life’s obstacles. I always find myself rooting for the little man, whether in movies, sports, or books. I like to mix that with a hint of revenge, and a dash of social commentary about the norms of today. That’s a formula I find myself revisiting over and over again. What is the main message you want your listeners to get? Mike Pinto: I want them to know that there are other people in this world like themselves that share their same wants, needs, pains, pleasures, phobias, etc. We are all trying to find our place in society and our

role among our peers, even our families. I want my listeners to walk away relating to what I’m saying. It brings us closer as human beings. The human race certainly has more similarities than differences, and I want people to realize that. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing? Mike Pinto: I’d be working for National Geographic, with a camera in my hand, hiding in a tree in a rainforest somewhere! Photography is a hobby I aim to pursue as I get older, and I am always seeking adventure. When is the next SD show? Mike Pinto: November 23 at House of Blues San Diego. It is our EP release party, and it’s all ages! We are playing with Seedless, Shoreline Roots and The Skains! DJ Cool Breeze will

be spinning some dope reggae in between sets! Do you have any shout outs? Mike Pinto: Big ups to Fashion 5.0 for the interview, our sponsors like Primo Beer, Gravity Skateboards, Black Flys, Alpine Stars, Silver Surfer Vaps and TRX Cymbals. Many thanks to our management The Madero Group and Zack Johnson at UAG, for taking care of business. All the bands on our scene, I see you working hard and I’m rooting for you. Keep hustling! Also, thanks to Ocean Beach and Leucadia, two of the coolest spots in the country with some of the most genuinely good people. Last but not least, my family and friends who have supported me since day one, love you more than words can say.

Slightly Stoopid was formed in Ocean Beach by Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald. The band has released six studio albums as well as two lives albums. The band describes their music as “a fusion of acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop and punk.” The band members of Slightly Stoopid performed at the Cricket Wireless stadium this past July. We caught up with C-Money and O.G. this fall to check in on their music and fashion. Be on the lookout for what’s next with these guys!

What was the Seedless Summer Tour like? C-Money: Epic! The vibes were great with the bands and we had such a great time jamming with each other. The crowds' vibes and energy were the best in three summers! Thank you to all who came out to enjoy the music! Oguer "O.G." Ocon: The Seedless tour was a lot of fun. It was the first time I met Cisco Adler and Shwayze. They sure did fire up the crowd. Same with Rebelution. Reb's vibes are sick! Having DJ Unite welcome the fans in and spinning between sets set the mood just right. And we all enjoyed sharing the stage with Mr. Sexy D, a.k.a. Karl Denson. Having him in the Stoopid crew has changed all our lives. And I can't leave out the man... of course I'm talking about Don Carlos! The first time he came

on stage with us, I think we all almost bust into tears... for real! The sound of his voice is very magnetic and draws you in. It was an honor sharing the stage with that man. Is there a remarkable collaboration you have done lately? C-Money: Getting to jam with the great Karl Denson and his Tiny Universe at the Belly Up in October. O.G.: Collaborating all the time. Although this summer, Sexy D and Dela, C-Money and I were talking about some Beastie Boy thing. What is your fashion style? Is fashion important to you? C-Money: Yes it is. My grandfather taught me to present myself as best possible at all times. This is more out of respect toward the people around

you than it is how cool you look. My style is formal James Bond/ Goodfellas type style! O.G.: What is my fashion? Wow, I've never been asked that before! Well, I guess I just like to be comfortable. I like Patagonia, and how the dude that owns it buys land and gives it back to the Indians. Wish more people would do that. I live on the beach so trunks are crucial. And when I'm on stage I wear OluKais, jeans and a plain shirt. Fashion is one of the many things that makes this world go 'round and 'round. Shout outs? C-Money: All people on the earth. Let's let life be fun for a while, no? O.G.: I'd like to send a shout out to all the beautiful females who read this mag. And support Stoopid. Thanks!

How did your band start? Tony-Ray "T-Ray" Jacobo: My brother Steve [lead vocals] and I started Tribal Seeds in high school — we were garage band status! Who are the members of the band? T-Ray: Myself [keys], Carlos Verdugo [drums], Tony Navarro [lead guitar], Jose Rodriguez [keys & percussion], Victor Navarro [bass], and Steven Jacobo. What has 2011 been like so far? T-Ray: 2011 has been raging. Town after town... our national tour is in full effect. We just played a show in South Berlington, Vermont last night and are on our way to Westchester, Pennsylvania now. Have about

ten shows left on our fall tour. Where is the farthest spot from San Diego that you have toured? T-Ray: Some of the farthest spots would probably be Guam and Aruba. However, we are soon going to be touring in Europe and South America, which we are really excited about. How do fans respond to you in other cities versus here? T-Ray: There are different levels of raging crowds. Some take a minute to warm up, but, good vibes are always our priority! When are you playing next in San Diego? T-Ray: We will be back in

San Diego in spring 2012. We're planning our next tour and have some new music we are working on as well! What is the next step for Tribal Seeds? T-Ray: For 2012 we are looking forward to expanding our international fan base and traveling to a few new countries, and we are working on our new album. Right now, we are still on our fall tour and promoting our newest EP "Soundwaves" but we have so much more to come. This is just the beginning. Shout outs? T-Ray: Much love to the fans, and roots concert promoters, The Worldbeat Center & Polynesian Underground.

Band members Jon Foreman, Tim Foreman, Chad Butler, Jerome Fontamillas and Drew Shirley are just a group of down to earth guys that love surfing and music. They never anticipated their music to take off the way it did. Be sure to check out their newest album Vice Verses!

illustrations by robert piper If you don’t know... now you know! EDM, short for “Electronic Dance Music,” has completely taken over the music entertainment scene. I’m sure many of you have been to an event, nightclub or performance and listened to some form of EDM. In fact, during Halloween weekend over 20,000 fans jammed the field at Petco Park to watch some of the most popular EDM artists perform presented by local production company L.E.D. (My Life Every Day). But what is this EDM thing all about? Where did it come from? How long has it been around? Some might think EDM is a new phenomenon, but I’ve been a fan of EDM since its

infancy in the early '80s. At that time it was referred to as “New Wave” or “Mod Music.” I can recall my early teen years when groups like Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, OMD, The Cure, New Order and Kraftwerk were putting out top hits with masterful mixes of synthesizers, bass beats and melodious hooks. EDM’s roots are primarily from the British underground scene and back then it was considered to be the second “British Invasion,” which came to the US via the launch of MTV and the New York nightclubs. There are a variety of music genres that are mixed with EDM including house, techno, indie, disco, dubstep, electro, and even hip hop. Basically EDM is just that what the

acronym suggests, electronically created dance music. You might be a fan of EDM and not even know it. Commercially, it has been used to promote international brands, businesses and industries. The worlds of fashion, beauty, sports, automobile, technology and entertainment have all played with this trend and have utilized this type of music to promote their respective businesses. But how is EDM doing here in San Diego? Who is behind the local EDM boom? I reached out to a few power players in the local scene to share their insiders’ perspectives on what EDM has been and will be for local fans.

jason herrick

Where does San Diego stand in the EDM world and how impressed are you with the boom in San Diego? San Diego is definitely a growing market for dance music culture. Over the past several years it's been great to see the popularity grow in this city. It has allowed for more big name artists to feel the unique energy that San Diego has to offer thanks to all the venues and production companies that support dance music. The biggest indicator for me is to see how many people from San Diego make their way to Miami in March for the annual music conference each year. Since my first time in 2005 I've seen more and more San Diegans go to show the nation how much we love house music!

How long have you been involved in the local music scene? 8 years. What's your quick definition of EDM? Electronic Dance Music... pretty much says it all in the name! How are you or your business involved with EDM? Fortune Industries consists of Fortune 421 Clothing, Fortune 421 Swimwear, Fortune Music record label and 421 Events which all support the house music community. We are based out of San Diego but over the years have produced and hosted EDM events in Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Phoenix. Describe your favorite music collaboration since you've been in the scene. Our favorite collaboration thus far has been with longtime house music legend and great friend to our brand, Donald Glaude. Together we developed a t-shirt and mix CD that shares a design inspired by some of the instruments that Donald uses to produce his music. You can find the t-shirt at Dolcetti Boutique in San Diego or online at www.fortune421.com.

Since Fashion 5.0 Magazine is primarily a fashion publication, how have you seen EDM influence the fashion scene? I know the dance music culture has directly inspired our Fortune 421 Clothing line from the beginning. We've designed apparel that includes different components of the DJ culture such as turntables, headphones and records on them. We continue to have our brand showcase these elements to show our support for the lifestyle. What notable talent have you worked with recently? Recently Fortune has been able to work with Junior Sanchez from New York City. It's been great to connect with an artist that has been a staple on the East Coast

house music scene for so many years. Over the past year we've continued to work with and support our good friends to the brand such as Scotty Boy, Scooter and Lavelle, Donald Glaude, JJ Flores and Chris Garcia. Who would be in your ultimate lineup of EDM performers? I think any lineup with Laidback Luke is at the top of my list. He always puts on an amazing show and has great energy! Is there an insider's scoop for some up and coming shows for November/December? On a local talent level, Fortune will be producing its annual DJ Contest at Side Bar Nightclub on all Thursdays in November and December. We're looking for some up and coming talent that has what it takes to make their mark on the San Diego scene. Also, keep January 1, 2012, clear on your calendar as we produce our annual Resolution Day Party for you to start off the New Year with some amazing house music and friends! Any shout outs for your business and the EDM scene? I just would like to thank everyone that has supported our company from the beginning. We wouldn't be here if it weren't for all the venues, artists and amazing people that come to our events and support our brand. Much love & 421!

Benny Benassi, Bob Sinclar, ATB, Morgan Page, Paul Oakenfold, Above & Beyond, Dash Berlin, Erick Morillo, Paul Van Dyk, Fedde Le Grand, Gareth Emery, Ferry Corsten and Markus Schulz to name a few. Who would be in your ultimate lineup of EDM performers? I would like to see David Guetta come back to SD since he hasn't been here in a while. Describe your favorite music collaboration since you've been in the scene. FLUXX Nightclub and Eventvibe have teamed up to create a great partnership with our FLUXX EDM club nights. We have brought in some of the best EDM DJs in the world. Recently we had Morgan Page spinning some great house music while two guest vocalists sang along to some of his tracks! Where does San Diego stand in the EDM world and how impressed are you with the boom in San Diego? Despite San Diego being a smaller market than Las Vegas or some of the bigger cities like NY or Miami, we still have a strong and enthusiastic EDM fan base that attracts the top talent in the industry.

Where does San Diego stand in the EDM world and how impressed are you with the boom in San Diego? SD is a growing scene. We are a favorite destination for some worldclass performers. The weather and scenery makes it an ideal place to visit. They bring the family and stay a few extra days if they can. Along with that, some awesome venues and awesome producers like us — it's a perfect match. As for the boom it helps raise the profile for EDM in SD. Makes parts of my job easier and others harder but it's all good stuff. Since Fashion 5.0 Magazine is primarily a fashion publication, how have you seen EDM influence the fashion scene? EDM is so universal it has impacted the world with bright colors and brilliant visuals. Going to an event is a journey for some. A festival can breed some very creative outfits. What notable talent have you worked with recently? Last month I had the pleasure of hanging out with Paul Oakenfold while we had him in town. A very cool guy, and he had some great insight into EDM. He took the time to talk to me and had some great compliments for San Diego. Who would be in your ultimate lineup of EDM performers? Daft Punk is the Holy Grail. They alone would complete me. Is there an insider's scoop for some up and coming shows for November/December? NYE is going to be a very interesting time for events. I'll save you tickets for ours.

matty allison How long have you been involved in the local music and promotions scene? Longer than most. What's your quick definition of EDM? EDM is Electronic Dance Music. It's a culture, if you're working in EDM then you probably love EDM. Maybe the music, maybe the performances or maybe just the good times. Either way it can be great! How are you or your business involved with EDM? We produce events. Give people a chance to see their favorite DJ perform live! Best time ever is after a show we produce, the rush and feeling of accomplishment is amazing. I'm getting excited for the next show right now! Describe your favorite music collaboration since you've been in the scene. How about Afrojack, Ferry Corsten, Moby & Porter Robinson on New Years Eve. Seeing these legendary and innovative artists sit in one room and talk shop was pretty special. Old school and new but EDM as the common bond!

Any shout outs for your business and the EDM scene? A Style Concierge is the best place to get your hair and style dialed in. Michael made me say it. Just want to thank the EV crew, all the ladies and gentlemen that help and support us in our business and our lives.

Where does San Diego stand in the EDM world and how impressed are you with the boom in San Diego? San Diego is a great opportunity for artists to play between Vegas and Los Angeles. As more opportunity arises for top name artists, the San Diego scene evolves into a place where events have nationwide recognition. Since Fashion 5.0 Magazine is primarily a fashion publication, how have you seen EDM influence the fashion scene? I still don't understand how the girls wear their spirit hoods in 80 degree weather. What notable talent have you worked with recently? Last year's Intervention season was amazing with Paul Oakenfold, Robbie Rivera, Benny Benassi, Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Sid Vicious, Donald Glaude, Avicii, Eddie Halliwell, Gabriel & Dresden, DJ Vice, Morgan Page, Chuckie, Red Foo, Funkagenda, Chris Garcia, Sidney Samson, Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke and some amazing local talent. Who would be in your ultimate lineup of EDM performers? I would like to produce a show with all the collaborations and the artists. A great example is David Guetta... Usher, Kid Cudi, Ludacris, Fergie, Snoop and to have the kid from YouTube on stage with him. But in all seriousness I would like to see a SHM (Swedish House Mafia) show with all three guys here in San Diego. Is there an insider's scoop for some up and coming shows for November/December? Talent for New Years Eve at the Hard Rock as well as our January Wintervention will be released soon.

andy hersch

Any shout outs for your business and the EDM scene? Intervention has become a nationally recognized event and we will extend that with monthly Wintervention parties in the off-season. Stay tuned for lineup announcements.

How long have you been involved in the music, promotions and productions scene? 20 years. What's your quick definition of EDM? Today's music that creates energy for the crowd. It crosses all spectrums of old classifications of house/electro/techno, etc. Today EDM has merged all formats and even found synergy with mainstream artists. How are you or your business involved with EDM? Float at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego produces our summer Intervention Sunday series with top name talent. We also produce Halloween and NYE on three floors with top EDM music. Describe your favorite music collaboration since you've been in the scene. My favorite time is working with artists that are still up and coming. They have such amazing energy and appreciation for the crowd. As an example, when we had Afrojack open for Deadmau5 at Intervention two years ago, he was beaming from ear to ear with excitement. Avicii had the same look in his eyes at Intervention this year.

today's trendsetters: fashion bloggers

gossip girl-inspired fashion line

Fashion is always changing and recently fashion bloggers have gained influence over millions with their inspirational trend-setting pieces. With technology changing and everything being in "real time," it’s no difficult task to get noticed online.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Bros. Television Group have teamed up with Romeo & Juliet Couture to launch “Gossip Girl by Romeo & Juliet Couture.” The line was inspired by Gossip Girl and features chic, contemporary fashion designs inspired by the characters.

Rumi Neely from San Diego is a perfect example. Ms. Neely launched fashiontoast.com after eBay visitors repeatedly asked her what shoes she wore in her pictures. Neely has been invited to various fashionable events in New York and Paris.

The collection includes tops, dresses, bottoms, outerwear, handbags and accessories that range from $80 to $200. These fashions launched in conjunction with the season five premiere of Gossip Girl on September 26 in Kitson, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

trend alert: get preppy this fall

Tim Gunn, the wellknown television personality as a fashion mentor on Project Runway, made an appearance on September 24 at Fashion Valley Mall. Designers like Kate Spade New York, Juicy Couture and Lucky Brand Jeans walked down the runway as Gunn provided commentary and advice on fall fashion must-haves. Dunn’s key fashion advice for the day: multitask a wardrobe by using different articles of clothing to mix and match and ultimately create different looks.

Preppy colors have been booming this fall. For both men and women, fashion must-haves include a preppy look with a mix of bright color. Brands such as J. Crew and Tommy Hilfiger have the key to this in-look. For men, mix and match cardigans, khakis, sweaters, colored jeans, boating shoes and ties to get this look.

ROCK AND ROLL

This loud, high-energy genre was spawned from rebellion. Being rebellious literally means opposing control and being defiant. Think of legends like Debbie Harry or even today’s ex-Gossip Girl actress-turned-rocker Taylor Momsen. Their looks are just as loud as their music. To help achieve a similar one try a bold pucker with the always popular line MAC and its hot pink lipstick called Lickable. MAC lipstick, available at Nordstrom, $14.50.

BLUES/SOUL

Makeup and music have been entangled for decades now. From the first time KISS rocked a stage to when David Bowie transformed into Ziggy Stardust, to the Insane Clown Posse embodying our worst nightmares, it seems there can’t be one without the other! While music’s rhythm and words tell us how an artist feels, makeup has that same effect. A toned down palette versus full-on glam indicates whether a girl is ready for a romantic dinner for two or a dance party with friends. No matter what your favorite genre is, look to these three styles to help create your own style to express how you may be feeling.

This mellow rhythm showcases one thing and one thing only, the voice. Soul artists Adele and Amy Winehouse are excellent icons for this genre. Just like their music, they both have rocked one focal point in making their eyes stand out with thick, heavy lines. Receiving accolades from both the beauty industry and today’s women, Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner can be used to recreate this dramatic yet simple eye look. Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, available at Nordsrom, $21.00.

POP This form of music is unique with the way it pulls from all other genres to create something that appeals to a large audience. Pop has so much going on. This style has a multitude of elements such as beats and background vocals in addition to a lead singer. Besides being a vocalist, this genre requires the singer to also be an entertainer. Pop idols like Jennifer Lopez exemplify that over-the-top style with their fat eyelashes and glittery eye shadow. A designer favorite, Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Pandora, is a tool you can use to create that va-va-voom look that gets everybody’s attention. Nars Duo Eyeshadow, available at Bloomingdale's, $33.00.

As seen throughout history, music is always evolving. Nobody likes to get stuck in a rut. Have fun and experiment with your look, even if that means crossing over boundaries!

bonus tip: Going to a Concert? Use a finishing spray, like Model in a Bottle Setting Spray, to help keep makeup in place in humid environments.
