A Dog is truly a man’s best friend!
Pretty much every girl loves animals. So for a fun date, bring her along while you take your dog for a walk in the park. This date is even better if you borrow a dog from a friend. Bring along some treats and have her help you teach the dog some new tricks. As you make your way through the park, have a surprise lunch already prepared on a grassy hilltop. Enjoy!

If you sense your date might be up for some mischief, put together a “mission” to sneak into the pool area of a trendy hotel. Volunteer together, but let the organization know that the two of you would like an activity that puts you in contact with one another, not in separate places where you can’t interact. You can “Hold on to Your Butt” with the Surfrider Foundation on November 20th or even do your own beach cleanup early one morning. It is fun to get to know someone while working together, especially while making a positive difference. Follow this up with a pre-planned café date that will leave her wanting more…

Aaron Smith began his career as “Shwayze” alongside friend and band mate Cisco Adler. The two produced perfect summer jams such as Buzzin’ and Corona and Lime. After breaking out in 2008, MTV quickly picked up the duo for a reality TV show that ran 8 episodes. Two years later, after several tours and two studio albums in the bag for Shwayze, Aaron Smith began fooling around with his very own, unique sound. A talented musician on his own, Smith recorded tracks without the intention of creating a full album, yet ended up with something organic and real. His new mixedtape Love Stoned was created over the last year as he toured across the country with Shwayze. The tracks are full of catchy hooks and great electronic backbeats that will have you dancing like Buzzin’ did. There is definitely a different message being encoded in Love Stoned. Rather than singing about womanizing and weed, Smith pays homage to his love of women. Every track is a love ballad, and although he claims there is no one in mind, it is obvious that the women being serenaded are his fans, which make this album even more addicting. As a prior Grossmont College student, Smith’s music has appealed to the women of the college scene for the past few years and there is no doubt that Love Stoned will soon be added to their playlist. Tracks such as Love Letter and Said It All Before are guaranteed hits with their smart and seductive lyrics accompanied by smooth melodies. With a new label to boot and mixtapes on the way (one of which features Kaleo from Pepper), Smith has big plans for his musical career and is constantly being inspired by his surroundings. Smith has also been experimenting as a DJ, spinning electronic genres such as the increasingly popular dubstep. Taking inspiration from every genre, Smith tells us, “It’s hard to classify [mine or any kind of] music, I just make music that feels good to me and that I like to hear.” Smith strives to “take them [listeners] to another place, another journey” and simply wants to make good music and have fun while doing it. Love Stoned is just a taste of what Aaron Smith has in store, as he plans to release a finalized album soon and is also working on a new Shwayze album with Adler. { continued }

Just two days after completing Swayze’s Fall Tour with Pepper, Aaron Smith drove down from Malibu to give us his take on music and life. After grabbing a quick bite at Analog, we met the photo team at the Culy Warehouse in downtown San Diego. The word spread quickly and soon there were other photographers and passerby’s peering in to catch a glimpse of the man. The door was shut, the music was loud and the vibe was perfect. What inspired you to make love stoned? I made a couple records with Shwayze and I wanted to show a different side, that I’m constantly working and can do a lot of different things. The reason I choose it to be under my real name is because I really think that Shwayze is me but it’s also collaboration between me and Cisco Adler. I didn’t want to confuse the fans or anything like that; I just want to take them to a different place, a different journey. What’s the latest with Shwayze? We just got off tour with Pepper and we’re about to go into the studio and start working on our third Shwayze record. It’s all positive and it’s all good. Cisco and I are great friends and are still making great music. How was working with Pepper? Pepper’s great. Kaleo and Brett are really great guys. I think a lot of their fans are also fans of Shwayze and vice versa, so when I go out to the shows, it’s a really great combination. What types of recording are you experimenting with? I just converted from the Blackberry to the iPhone. On the iPhone I record a lot of demos but the quality is amazing and I can just take
it anywhere. So if I get the bug in a hotel room in Arkansas, or if I am in the Bu, or wherever I’m at, I can just lay it down and get the idea down which is cool. How difficult is it to make music? Nowadays it’s so easy to make music. Anyone can do it; you just need a couple components. A couple of years ago you had to have studio time and spend a lot of money on recording. Nowadays you can do it anywhere and that‘s been really awesome, especially for Love Stoned because I made that while I was traveling all over the place. What are the differences between your Aaron Smith and Shwayze fans? I look at the responses on YouTube and Facebook and I do see a lot of the same fans. The beauty of it is I do get to reach other fans as well. On Love Stoned I have a plethora of different styles. I went from some R&B stuff on tracks like Said It All Before and Superhero but kept it with the beach, west-side, cool, feel-good music on a lot of different tracks. What kind of fashion do you like? I’m not all about brands, although I find myself having brands. I don’t know I have them because I just get whatever looks dope. I’m basically a skinny jeans, Chuck Talyor’s and cool leather jacket kind of dude. Any final thoughts? Aaronsmithmusic.com is my blog; I’m on it every day. here is a type of music that was born in the 1990’s. Alternative did its thing and grunge ran its course. In 1994, after multiple Rolling Stone covers accompanied by an authentic, self-disparaging and anti-corporate mentality, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was found dead in his home in Seattle.
notoriety for alternate reasons. It was so popular that almost every track mesmerized the youth.
Cobain’s death dealt a blow to America’s youth. Although 1994 and 1995 celebrated the popularity of R&B, rap, hiphop and several dance tracks, there was nothing that truly captured the collective soul of Generation X. The year 1996 played a different tune however, where one album made a mark not only upon the youth but the future of humanity.
Before Sublime was released, Nowell gave a high school punk band out of San Diego, CA a rare opportunity. He signed them to create an album on his Skunk Records label. The band is called Slightly Stoopid and the rest is history. What Nowell perhaps saw, when nobody else did, was a group of guys that had a raw talent that the world would soon be ready for. What he couldn’t see, however, was that through his personal vision, an entire genre of music would continue to captivate an entire new generation 15 years later.
On July 30th, 1996, Sublime’s self-titled album was released and the music spread like wildfire. Within months kids from Burbank to San Diego were humming the same tunes. Backyards, house parties, radio stations and boom-boxes on the beach all had one thing in common: Sublime. Although their lead singer and guitarist, Brad Nowell, passed away just months before the album was released, the album gained
Duddy B of The Dirty Heads, in reference to Nowell, stated in the track Believe, “I never wanted something so badly, I want to learn to play guitar and sing just like Bradley.” The inspiration of one man, a man named Bradley Nowell, gave birth to an entire music scene. Were so happy, ‘cause today we found our friends. They’re in our heads and we call it SoCal Music.

After producing his debut album Little District in 2005, Pinto relocated from Philadelphia to San Diego. Pinto has made a recognizable name for himself with his contagious blend of ska, reggae and surfer music. He has gained worldwide recognition from topping the charts in Japan, Guam and Hawaii and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

{ Featured YouTube vid/Track: Fallin’ } Iration, from the Big Island of Hawaii, have mastered the art of genre blending music between rock and reggae. Adding to their arsenal of classic reggae sounds, Iration adds in a dub presence which produces an original sound that can’t be seen with other rock/reggae bands. Calling their sound “New Roots,” Iration has become a fixture in the SoCal music scene and continue to spread their island vibes around the world.

{ Featured YouTube vid/Track: Lay Me Down } The Dirty Heads, from Huntington Beach, CA, started their band writing hip-hop songs with reggae and punk influences and soon gained popularity among the SoCal music scene. Rolling Stone nominated them for one of the “Best New Bands of 2010.” According to vocalist Jared Watson, “We want to be positive and entertain.” With their smooth, unrushed tempos and upbeat, reggaeinfluenced melodies, The Dirty Heads are making quite the mark on the American youth.

Their hits such as Buzzin’ and Corona and Lime have topped MTV’s playlist and are well known tracks all across the country. They have succeeded in bringing the SoCal music vibe to the masses and their reality T.V. show named after their hit track, Buzzin’, gave a glimpse into the rising stardom of two of SoCal’s most talented artists.

Rebelution classifies themselves as “Cali-reggae” and hooks their audience with high-energy and catchy melodies that last well into the next day. To top it all off, Rebelution’s live shows deliver every time by constantly involving the crowd. Rebelution’s constant displays of unwavering commitment to their fans bring out the true nature of the SoCal music scene.

{ Featured YouTube vid/Track: Sacrifice } The Expendables like to describe their sound as “reggae had sex with metal, punk got in the mix, ska videotaped it all (and) then out popped The Expendables.” Sexual references aside, in Down Down Down (no pun intended), they perfectly capture the beach-style social scene by stating “Night time in this neighborhood of mine you’ll hear the backyards murmur, oh when the glow light of the bonfire sight warms souls and outstretched fingers.” After gaining major traction in the college-music scene in 2006, The Expendables continue deliver great hits with melodic guitar riffs that you can’t help but jam to. These Santa Cruz natives perfectly embody the reggae/rock/ska/punk infused music that we call SoCal.

Originally from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Pepper gave support to many upcoming acts, including fellow Big Island group Iration. With their raw, take-no-prisoners, and often vulgar sound, Pepper continues to use their maturity to give back to this genre by promoting rising bands and the sound itself.

Playing sold out shows all over the world, Slightly Stoopid combines everything from reggae, ska, rock, punk and most recently hip hop to showcase their high range of talents. Over the years they have played with legends such as Snoop Dogg and Damien Marley. Though your number one pick has been around since 1995, they are still gaining momentum in their fan base and recognition as not only musicians, but as frontrunners by introducing some the newest sounds in SoCal music through their record label, Stoopid Records.

5 5. Jet West // San diego, ca Jet West is the epitome of a band heavily influenced by the more beautiful things in life, such as girls, surf and mellow tunes. Hailing from San Diego, this band delivers an upbeat, relaxed sound that is perfect for a day spent outdoors. Sunday and Mexico will take you straight to that laid-back vibe quicker than you can say “shaka.”

Raw or “living” foods have been creating a lot of buzz lately. Celebrities, nutritionists and doctors are promoting an age old practice that has become less apparent with the commercialization and processing of food. Living foods have not been heated above 115 degrees. This preserves more of the vitamins and minerals in your meal. Also, living foods have more enzymes that aid food digestion. Enzymes also play a vital role in helping your body stay young, healthy and beautiful as it ages.

COUGH? Whooping Cough is a disease that California recently declared to be a state-wide epidemic. We have had over 5,200 cases so far this year, including nine deaths. The majority of California’s whooping cough cases are found in large urban centers such as Los Angeles and San Diego.

What is whooping cough? Whooping Cough, or Pertussis, is a very contagious respiratory infection caused by a type of bacteria called Bordetella Pertussis. The disease starts like the common cold. Symptoms include runny nose, congestion and a sore throat. It is most contagious during this stage. After 1-2 weeks, severe coughing develops. Is it dangerous? Whooping Cough can be fatal, especially in infants and those with a history of respiratory disease. Even when not fatal, what seems like a mild illness can rapidly progress into severe respiratory distress, causing vomiting, panic, blue skin tone and loss of consciousness.

3. FRESH FRUIT Fresh fruits are full of vitamins, nutrients and minerals. For the winter, try some of the California citrus harvest. Valencia oranges are good for juicing! Apples and bananas are easy for the girl on the go.
4. FRESH VEGGIE JUICE With the recent growing juice trend you should be able to find a juice bar close to home. Go exploring this month and try a blend with carrots. Although juice has less fiber than eating veggies, it’s packed with nutrients that will boost your immune system.
5. VEGGIE LETTUCE WRAP Take a piece of lettuce and wrap your favorite chopped veggies with some hummus, dressing or spread. Bell peppers are a great start!

How can I tell if I have whooping cough? Whooping Cough typically consists of severe choking/ cough attacks that are separated by long intervals of little or no coughing at all. The attacks are often accompanied by a whooping or gasping for air sound in-between coughs. Examples can be found online at www.whoopingcough.net. How can I protect myself? The Center for Disease Control recommends that all teens and adults get a booster shot called Tdap at least once every 10 years. Tdap protects against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis. Consult your immunization record or call your doctor to see if you are at risk! My lungs are strong and healthy. Do I still need a booster? If you are a healthy adult, you are not likely to die from Whooping Cough. Remember though, that it is most contagious in its early stage, when it’s indistinguishable from the common cold. During this stage, an infected person could unknowingly spread the disease to others. What if I babysit or work with kids? Infants and children aren’t fully immunized against Pertussis until reaching age 4-6. The only way to protect young children from Whooping Cough is to immunize all the adults they interact with. Go to your college’s health center and get your booster today!

Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices that originated in India more than three thousand years ago. Its purpose is to help each one of us achieve our highest potential and to experience enduring health and happiness. With Yoga, we can extend our healthy, productive years far beyond the accepted norm and improve the quality of our lives at the same time. There are many branches of Yoga, but the most common in the West is called Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga begins by working with the body on a structural level, helping to align the vertebrae, increase flexibility and strengthen muscles and connective tissue. At the same time, internal organs are toned and rejuvenated. The epidermal, digestive, lymphatic, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems are purified of toxins and waste matter. The nervous and endocrine systems are balanced and toned and brain cells are nourished and stimulated. Yoga can initially be broken into 5 basic areas of practice: 1. asanas, or body postures, 2.pranayama, or breathing exercises, 3.cleansing practices, 4.music and sound therapy, and 5. deep relaxation. Yoga is not a contest or a “quick fix.” Yoga favors quiet, consistent application over theatrical displays and superficial accomplishments. It does not require that we transform ourselves overnight into something beyond our capacity. Yoga begins by accepting our limitations, whatever they may be, and working with this self-acceptance as a base. In our daily practice, we gradually learn to transcend our limitations, one by one. In this way, real and lasting progress is possible.

Are you good at remembering names? Nobody likes that awkward situation of meeting someone new and then immediately forgetting their name. Networking is what gets you places in life. Remembering people’s names will produce credibility and respect. Follow these eight tips and you will be on your way to making a great first impression.

Repeat their name when you meet. When you first meet someone you will hear their name at least once. Start off your response by repeating their name before you introduce yourself. This is as simple as saying “Well hello Don! Nice to meet you, I’m Claire.” After this you have heard their name twice, once to learn and once to review. Spell the person’s name in your head. When you visualize the person’s name you are using another one of your senses. If you come across an unusual name, or a name with alternate spelling choices, you can ask the person to spell it for you. That may sound silly but people really appreciate it when you go the extra mile to understand who they are.
Make a joke about their name. People love jokes! Break the ice with a bit of fun and you will be sure to rouse your new acquaintance. Even if it is something corny, you will be appreciated for effort. When meeting Don, you could say “Donald, you’re fired” in a New York accent. By catching someone off guard you also make quite the impression! Use their name in conversation. As the conversation continues, randomly insert the person’s name. The more you hear the name the better you will be at remembering it. Also, this helps other people that are in the conversation. Now you are helping yourself and your friends. Bonus tip? Repeating your name will help your new acquaintance remember you too.

Ask the person for another introduction. It is always okay to say “What’s your name again?” People are naturally forgiving and by asking them again, you are showing that that you really care. Once they respond they might even ask you for yours again! Tell them quickly but then focus back on their name.
