April is the perfect time of year to renew your sense of adventure. With flowers blooming all around us and local creeks filled with water from recent winter rains, Southern California’s natural beauty is at its peak. Those of us with adventurous spirits and a thirst for exploration are heading for the hills… and then to the local tapas bar! While nobody can deny San Diego’s gorgeous natural landscape, many underestimate the thrill of urban exploration in our amazing city by the sea. Although I don’t think of myself as a foodie per se, there just aren’t words to describe the excitement of discovering that diamond in the rough and then personally introducing it to my friends and colleagues. If you enjoy food and entertainment thrill-seeking like I do, you might just salivate as you flip through the pages of this Best of San Diego issue. And if not, get with the program! With summer just around the corner, physical fitness is a top priority this season. I love stepping out of my element and entering the world of martial arts three nights a week. If you haven’t found your exercise niche yet, try something counter-intuitive; it may end up being just what you need. Finally, consider the healthy snack ideas and tips for bikini-ready skin included in this issue. After all, nothing screams confidence like a girl strutting her stuff in a new bikini!

RT’s Longboard Grill ROCK YOUR TASTE BUDS

It’s hard to find the right balance in a bar that offers energy, dancing, great food and sports all in one place. RT’s Longboard Grill fits the bill, offering a laidback atmosphere full of fun people and good vibes. The hangout is full of beach memorabilia, including vintage surf photos hanging on the walls and surfboards strategically positioned around the interior. Longboard’s is a popular spot to meet up for a bike ride down the beach or as a starting point for a walk down Garnet Avenue to take in the

tastes of the many restaurants and bars peppering the strip. This easygoing venue features live music and an open mic on various nights throughout the week. Reggae Sundays offer beats that spill onto the street and a happy, bouncing crowd. If you can put up with the passionate Boston fans, Longboard’s is also a great spot for watching sports like baseball and football. The open-air layout allows the less sportsenthused to hang out on the patio while chowing down on

some of the best nachos by the beach. Come with an empty stomach; their portions are huge and you don’t want to miss out on their juicy and delicious burgers! Nightly specials are offered, including $1.50 tacos on Tuesdays and 25¢ wings on Wednesdays. Check out this place and if you dig it, ask about the Big Swell card. For a one-time fee of $5 you get hooked up with discounts like half off your tab on Mondays and free cover for certain events.

Pacific Beach is a beach town with charm that satisfies many styles. Athletes can enjoy a run or bike ride down the boardwalk, foodies can be found at any of the many restaurants enjoying fresh local seafood and shoppers can enjoy a variety of boutiques for building a fab wardrobe. The ambitious can embark on all three in a day. PB is the kind of town that encourages switching gears from morning workouts, to shopping in the afternoon and dining and dancing at night. Crystal Pier is a historic San Diego icon in PB and is open for visitors to stroll and take in the scent of ocean mist and the sounds of crashing waves. The boardwalk of PB borders the length of the beach and provides a refreshing location to get in a workout and tan at the same time! PB borders Mission Beach to the south, which allows a unique and romantic venue for a weekend date such as dining, walking the boardwalk, experience a sunset and enjoying the nightlife.

World Famous

Great breakfast, lunch and dinner on the beach in PB Brunch on the beach with a group of friends might be one of the best ways to start the weekend. World Famous in Pacific Beach is the perfect location for flavorful (and totally economical) dishes and ocean views. You’ll see an interesting mix of people along the boardwalk as you relax and take in the sights from the beachside patio. From rugged locals focused in on landing their latest bike tricks, to spring breakers playing horseshoes, there is always a ton going on. World Famous offers nightly specials as well, ensuring every night is a great one to chill out and enjoy some fresh fish.

Sun - Thurs: 9am to 9pm Fri - Sat: 9am to 10pm

“ Best Food in Town”

World Famous offers killer shrimp taco deals on Tuesdays, with lobster and pollo asado taco specials on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Splitting a bottle of wine with a group of friends is never easier than on a Monday night as their extensive list of appetizers sell for half price. Try the savory "Nut-Crusted Brie" that offers gooey, melted cheese balanced exquisitely with a fresh and sweet apricot mango glaze. The lobster bisque delivers such delicious flavors you’ll be fighting your manners to lick the bowl. The daily menu at World Famous always reflects the freshest seafood complimented with seasonal ingredients.

Book Stores

Looking for a man with intellect or at least one that can read? Books and libraries are the perfect place. Try browsing the business, cooking or international sections where you’re sure to find a cutie who might dazzle you with unique commentary on a book you pick up. Any guy who is actively looking to challenge and expand his mind is a keeper. Men of all ages shop at bookstores such as Borders, so break out your glasses and remember your bookmarks!

4

Coffee Shops

Coffee is in style year-round! Coffee shops like Starbucks are basically like a bar for the daytime. Coffee drinkers are hooked on their caffeine and they love to sip and be social! If you’re not a big coffee lover, try a super-rich antioxidant tea. Morning is an opportune time to hit up the coffee shop, but afternoon pick-me-ups are high traffic times too. If you are lucky enough, you will meet a guy with a Starbucks Gold Card and if you do, I’d say he is a keeper!

best places to meet

5 6

If you are interested in artistic guys with a sensitive heart and a great body, try switching up your grocery shopping trips to Whole Foods. The produce section is a great place to start. If you are wondering what to say, try a conversation starter like, “How do you pick the best avocado?”

1

Gym

Meeting guys at the gym is easy as long as you stop working out solo with your iPod shoved in your ears. Start taking group classes and look around. While you exercise your muscles you can exercise your heart as well. With summer right around the corner, check out popular gyms like 24 Hour Fitness which always have special membership deals starting as low as $24.99/month. Now that’s a pretty fair price to put on love!

2

The Apple Store

The Apple Store is a killer hotspot for meeting men. Even if you’re not into nerdy tech guys, it creates a great opportunity to run into cool guys who are up on the latest and greatest in technology. Chances are you will probably be at the mall shopping anyway, so why not stop in and browse?

Church

Thank God, for your prayers have been answered. Can I get an amen? Think of church as a dating service where single, religious men gather in a time of worship. Not only will these men share the same values as you, but also they could have the potential of becoming life partners. Maybe you won’t find Mr. Right sitting in the pew next to you, but take advantage of any singles groups your church has to offer and who knows, the heavens really might open up.

Weddings

We have seen it in the movies and read about it in books. Some of us have actually witnessed it. At weddings love is always in the air. Everyone is dressed to impress while mingling, dancing and eating great food. This creates a perfect setting to introduce yourself to the hot groomsmen you had your eye on the entire ceremony! The union of the bride and groom allows other attendees to visualize a future wedding for themselves. Maybe you won’t be saying “I Do” right off the bat, but how about a drink and a dance?

8

Sports Bars

What are you going to find in a sports bar on game night? Men! Even better, there will be way more men than women so the odds are in your favor. Check out Miller’s Field in Pacific Beach where the atmosphere is casual and the drinks are reasonably priced. This boisterous sports bar features turtle races at 10 p.m. every Monday night, right after football ends. So, if your craving for competition still isn’t satisfied after the game, you can duke it out in a reptilian style.

DID YOU KNOW?: Word has it that the Vons in Pacific Beach is a HAVEN for hotties. Be sure to wear your best dress! 10

“If there is no doubt in your mind that you will be successful in something then see it through, and if you fail, there’s a lot of life to be lived,” said Pinto. “You have the rest of your life to make up for it; it’s not the end of the world.”

FREE Tickets for Mike Pinto and Iration at Belly Up on April 21st!

Pinto, along with his fellow band members Todd Elrod (drums) and Matt Brein (bass), has toured internationally, including Australia, Mexico and Guam. His domestic tours have landed him everywhere from Hawaii to Philadelphia. “If I had it my way I would play on every continent and in all the 50 states. That has recently become a life goal of mine and I think we might be heading to Europe in the next year or so. I want music to take me all over the world,” said Pinto.

According to Pinto, his music, which mixes Vintage Rock, Reggae, Ska and Classic Surf, often has a theme of vengeance. Of his music, Pinto states, “A lot of revenge is involved. I don’t know why; I guess I’m into vengeance where people who have been wronged get their justice in the end.” Pinto adds, “I’m always fighting for the underdog and I want everything to turn out right at the end.”

Pinto has shared the stage with several well-regarded musicians, including C-Money from Slightly Stoopid. According to Pinto, music has consumed him fully. Besides focusing on his lyrics, melodies and tunes, he loves to travel and hopes to one day write a screenplay that he would possibly turn into a film. “I’d like to write at least one screenplay in my life. As far as making it into a movie, like an actual dark comedy, that’s hopefully where the next step will go. Maybe when I have a family and want to slow down with touring,” said Pinto. For now, Pinto is working on his third full-length album that he plans to call "The West is Still Wild." The album will include some acoustic tunes and is planned to be released later this year.

8 health

healthy

snacks to keep you moving!

1

Avocado

2

Fresh Veggies

Avocados are full of amino acids and antioxidants that provide major health benefits and are tasty as well! Eat half an avocado plain or mash it up, add some lime and tomatoes, and you have a tasty treat that pairs well with healthy chips.

Nothing beats a bag of fresh-cut veggies. High in living nutrients and low in calories, fresh veggies are the ultimate on-the-go snack. Carrots, celery and cucumbers are great examples of veggies that are not only delicious, but also easy to cut up and eat when you’re in a hurry. Add some of your favorite dipping sauce and voilá, you have a great snack for staying fit!

3

Fresh Fruit

4

Health Bars

Fresh fruit is full of fiber, low in fat and contains no added sugar. Raspberries are a great healthy snack because they contain about 8 grams of fiber in each cup! Eating dried fruits, such as raisins and figs, is also a great way to fill up and stay fit.

Health bars are largely popular because they offer nutrientrich ingredients in a perfect amount for snacking. They provide the protein you need to stay full and satisfied so you are less likely to reach for unhealthy options.

5

Nuts

6

Trail Mix

7

Bean Dip

8

Cereal

Nuts are packed full of both protein and fiber. Almonds top the charts with almost 4 grams of fiber in a single ounce! Walnuts take a close second place, with just over 3 grams per ounce. To avoid unnecessary sodium intake, go for lightly salted or unsalted options.

Trail mix is healthy, full of flavor and really easy to make. It offers satisfaction to that rumble in your stomach, while also delivering usable energy for your body. All you have to do is grab a handful and go!

Beans are an amazing source of fiber and they’re also low in fat and calories. Hummus, a dip made from garbanzo beans, is full of protein and tastes great with whole-wheat pita bread. Also, you can try making your own healthy bean dip with the bean of your choice. Get creative by adding any spices or seasonings that tickle your taste buds.

When it comes to getting your daily dose of fiber, a bran-based cereal is the way to go. But not every cereal is created equal. Often times they contain high amounts of sugar, so be sure to read the label! If you prefer warm cereal, oatmeal is another great alternative.

Tune in every Sunday from 6 - 8 p.m. on www.oraclebroadcasting.com to hear Micah’s exploration of health and wellness. Feel free to call in about any health concerns you may have!

DID YOU KNOW?: Almonds are not only a great snack, they are packed with many important B-complex vitamins. 26

beauty

get ready for

summer We’ve got the tips for bikini-ready skin By Nina Salemi photo: molly b bikinis by derrick tuskan

TANNING TIPS

DIMPLE-FREE

BARE & SMOOTH

HAIR NO MORE!

1

1

1

1

Give the sunbathing a rest after spring break and choose a less harmful tanning alternative. Utilize sunless tanning products, not “bronzers,” which create temporary tans and are easily washed away like makeup.

2

Always glance at the product's instructions as they have variable application recommendations.

3

Apply all products to dry, freshly-exfoliated skin to insure even application and absorption.

4

Allow skin to dry before dressing to avoid smudging. Showering 6-8 hours after application is recommended and will remove excess product to avoid staining without washing away your tan.

5

Reapply approximately every 3 days to keep your tan up! Depending on the product, your tan will usually last 5-7 days. St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse Dries in 60 seconds! $30.00 at Sephora, 4 oz

Get started on an anti-cellulite regimen to help smooth skin for bikini season! Although these products can greatly improve cellulite appearance, they are not miracle creams. Consider pairing these with a sensible diet and exercise. Circulating blood flow in the area with massage tools along with these will really help attack cellulite!

2

Look up the product online before purchasing and check out user reviews to help decide which brand to choose.

3

Apply product at night before bed. This is when your skin absorbs best and will get the full benefit of the product.

4

Be patient! Allow 2-8 weeks to start seeing results. Keep in mind some products need to be applied continually to maintain. Clarins High Definition Body Lift Minimize the cellulite and enhance skin. $66.00 at Macy’s, 6.9 oz

Show off a healthy complexion! When choosing spa treatments keep these tips in mind: Look into a lightly-exfoliating or super-hydrating treatment as chemical peels and more intense exfoliating procedures will leave your skin super vulnerable to UV damage during these sunny months.

2

Ask your spa consultant about treatments containing seaweed, algae or Vitamin C. Seaweed and algae are excellent to detoxify and perk up tired skin while Vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant and mild exfoliant to help freshen skin and reverse sun damage.

3

If you are searching for an over-the-counter spa treatment, look for a product with renewing properties and free radical fighters. This will help repair sun damage and keep your skin glowing. Kiehl's Overnight Biological Peel Great for all skin types! $43.00 at Kiehl's, 1.7 fl oz

Hair removal options. For soft swimsuit-ready skin, here are 4 options to consider: Laser hair removal: Done in sessions, this procedure penetrates hair to the root and can be used anywhere on the body. Multiple sessions needed before hair stops growing back.

2

Waxing: Involves applying a wax that sticks to the skin but bonds only with the hair. A cloth is applied and removed, taking hair with it. This leaves hair follicles open and prone to infection. Best when done at a salon or spa.

3

Depilatories: They dissolve the protein that makes up hair to leave a rounder, smoother edge. Stubble is minimized and hair takes longer to grow in after treatment.

4

Shaving: Reduce side effects by remembering to change out your razor blades and always apply shaving cream or lubrication. Bikini Zone Medicated Creme Stops irritation. $8.79 at CVS Pharmacy, 1.0 oz

bonus tip: Hydrating Face Mask: Mash 1 avocado with a few drops of almond oil. Massage onto skin, wait 25 minutes before rinsing. APRIL 2011 //
