T

here is nothing like a little Olympic spirit to thrive off and be inspired by. These 2012 Summer Olympics in London seem to have brought a rejuvenated spirit of patriotism as we cheer for our athletes as they represent our country and bring home several medals, including an impressive amount of gold. These Olympic athletes have worked hard for their whole lives, focused and determined to bring home the title of “the best in the world.”

The mentality of San Diego’s trendsetters isn’t too far from the ways of our Olympians by way of the goals, dedication and determination our SD trendsetters are blazing in the trails in fashion, art, beauty, music and so much more. Learn about and be motivated by those that are changing our communities and thriving in their own expertise on page 12. Now is a great time to challenge yourself to accomplish great things just like our featured San Diego trendsetters. With the mindset of determination, you can set big goals and follow-through to make them happen. One goal I set this year is to create something special myself, which is my new gluten-free, healthy and active lifestyle brand, Sweet & Free Life. I’m so excited to share this new brand with all of you as this stems from my personal story in my fight for good health my entire life. I had lived in so much pain and was really sick until I was twenty-four years old, when I found the culprit, gluten. This discovery, four years ago, has taught me so much about living a healthy and active life while being gluten-free which I have decided to share on my new website, www.SweetandFreeLife.com. So many people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance are living life undiagnosed, and I hope to help many find their way back to a Sweet & Free Life! Of course that’s not all that you will find, so check it out and get a taste of me! As summer is wrapping up and several of you are headed back to school, or your regular responsibilities and saying goodbye to vacation time, I hope you all are full of amazing memories that will last forever. At least the sun will continue to be shining in beautiful San Diego, so continue to soak it up as much as you can!

Hailing from Fullerton, California, our August 2012 cover girl Corrie Lejuwaan began modeling after she was scouted at 15 at a surf competition. It didn’t quite work out then, but she thought about giving it another try two months ago and got signed by No Ties here in San Diego. When asked about working with Dean Hall, Lejuwaan said, “He has impeccable taste in fashion. He was able to pair together outfits that no one would ever think went together, and they ended up looking so chic and fabulous.”

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, John Audley began shooting photos in the third grade. Audley found his calling and went on to earn a Bachelor’s of Science degree in photography from Northern Arizona University. His favorite types of photography are sports, fashion and abstract art and of his big clients is none other than our beloved San Diego Padres. When asked why the move to San Diego, Audley said “I moved to San Diego for the lifestyle and the surf. I love to surf!”

Hayley Underwood moved to London for graduate school where she received her Master in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Before moving across the pond, she worked at InStyle Magazine and InStyle.com after graduating from UCSB with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Art History. She is now a Development Producer at the award-winning post-production company Shilo. According to Underwood, “I became a dating columnist because I like connecting with people. I mean, who doesn’t love a good story?”

1. PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

ANGELA CORTRIGHT PHOTO COURTESY OF SPA GREGORIE’S

Angela Cortright has been embedded in the Southern California community for over 20-years, and continues to grow her roots deeper and deeper with every significant contribution she makes. She is a proven innovator, leader and humanitarian in the spa industry. Since 1998, when Angela and her husband founded Spa Gregorie’s, she has successfully led Spa Gregorie’s into the forefront of the Southern California spa scene. Spa Gregorie’s has also taken home top recognitions in the national spa and wellness scene such as the “Favorite Day Spa in America” in the Professional Choice Awards by American Spa Magazine in 2009 and 2011.

Troubled tootsies? With the average person regularly spending four hours per day on their feet, it’s no wonder there is a national epidemic of foot problems. The feet are full of acupressure points that promote health and wellbeing, so it’s important to treat them well. Services range from over-the-top pedicures to decadent foot rubs. We offer a treatment called the Sole Sacrifice, which includes a full body massage as the feet are exfoliated, soothed and rubbed with a decadent botanical scrub.

2. TECH SAVVY

With Nintendo Wii yoga, sharing spa and beauty trends on Pinterest and social media apps for wellness such as My Fitness Diary, the tech world is invading the wellness world! Check out Deepak Chopra’s meditation game “Leela,” as well as fitness and nutrition offerings from the likes of Nike+ and Fitbit.

3. TIS’ THE SEASON

Let the seasons cue your next spa experience. Look for pumpkin peels in the fall to kick-start the resurfacing process and citrus-based treatments in spring to provide a subtle glow and renewed collagen production. Right now I’m excited about our new Organic Brightening Mandarin Facial aimed to correct summer skin problems caused by the sun like hyperpigmentation and fine lines.

4. CELLULAR

Stem cells are all the rage in the spa industry with advanced treatments bringing proven results to the table. Released in both fruit and animal forms, stem-cell products contain molecular building blocks that researchers hope may one day be used to rebuild damaged and diseased tissue throughout the body. Products containing both versions of stem cells have been the latest craze for cuttingedge skin and beauty lines for 2012.

5. GOODBYE FLUFF, HELLO GOOD STUFF

Over-the-top chocolate pedicures and diamond facials are passé. Guests are now seeking health-oriented results and meaningful spa experiences. Look for more potent offerings from organic sources as well as breakthroughs in the labs with wellness items such as peptides, telomeres, antioxidants and more.

FUN FACT: Over a decade, the number of spa locations has grown from 4,140 in 1999 to 19,900 in 2010.

KELVIN AT THE W HOTEL BY ALEXANDRA McNAIR

HUNT & GATHER Named after a unit of measurement from chemistry class, Kelvin is a restaurant designed to turn the temperature up! Having recently undergone renovations the W Hotel is now featuring a hotel “living room,” rooftop bar and restaurant full of swagger.

Awaken your palate with the poblano corn soup. Creamy and rich with a touch of texture offered by roasted corn kernels and the buttery crunchy kiss of popcorn, the soup has a touch of heat that sets the tone for the subtle surprises in the courses to come.

Kelvin is the unit of measurement to gauge color temperature in science, and vibrant colors abound within the restaurant. Colors of orange and aqua contrast each other and hearken to a fire and ice theme, meaning your night will be as cool or as hot as you want. Chill electro-type jams fill the air to relax the mood and attract chemistry flow between groups of friends or couples.

The duck confit quesadillas are a rich, gourmet spin on a traditional Mexican dish. The tender duck is cooked in its own juices for a rich and potent flavor balanced with the sweetness of caramelized onion and the creamy lushness of brie cheese. Topped with cool pico de gallo these mini quesadillas are tasty treasures with a portion just large enough to share with a friend.

Chef Kevin Harry invites guests to enjoy his playful menu, mostly consisting of smaller bites to invite sharing and community among guests. Chef Kevin, formerly the Executive Chef of the New York Yankees, presents a tasty modern cuisine with Latin flair. Craft cocktails showcase unique and vibrant ingredients to pair with the zesty cuisine. A

Between the delectable bites and stylish atmosphere Kelvin will make you and your crew feel as worthy of the VIP experience as former guests Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Come in to share small bites or indulge in the dynamic flavors of a multi-course meal for a memorable evening with just the right amount of heat.

eeling run down, sluggish or depressed? If so, it may be time to pamper yourself with a cleanse. As a woman, I naturally love to pamper myself and those around me. Yet how easy is it to get off track and forget to take care of yourself? Without a healthy you, you are unable to really help others. The human body is a remarkable piece of art. Our bodies are such efficient machines, however they can only take so much abuse before they stop working at an optimum level. Living an unhealthy lifestyle filled with high levels of sugar, alcohol abuse or the intake of toxin-filled foods can have devastating effects on the body. For example, when toxins and waste

Love My Liver juice accumulate in our colons, it leads to a host of undesirable conditions that extend beyond the digestive system and could eventually turn into serious illnesses. Take a good hard look at how you’re feeling lately. Are you feeling constipated or is your digestion optimal? Do you suffer from gassiness and bloating? Are you suffering from weight gain, skin abnormalities, constant fatigue or stress? If so, this could be the ideal time for a body cleanse, which will clean out the accumulation of toxins, add natural energy and offer a host of other desirable conditions suitable for a healthy lifestyle.

A cleanse can be something as simple as trading in your morning cup of joe for a lemon-ginger tea. It could be getting a massage or using the sauna to speed up the detoxification of your cells. It could even be trading in a meal every day for a cup of fresh vegetable juice.

INGREDIENTS:

The biggest question people could ask when undergoing a cleansing protocol or any detox program is, “Can I do this?” Of course you can. Many people feel so good during while cleansing that they continue to do one on a regular basis. One easy and popular way to cleanse your body is to juice vegetables at home. Here are a couple of great recipes which offer great nutrition and are easy to make.

This juice will not only make your skin glow, but also contains parsley which helps remedy water retention. The celery is a great digestive aid and the carrots are full of minerals.

HYENA THE RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Stratman: Our music is what happens when a couple of musicians from indie bands tap into electro music. We are blending in elements from every style really, and I think that is why we are getting all kinds of people into it, I feel there are universal things that make music good and no matter what label you put on it. How did you get your start with Hyena? Where did the concept come from? Stratman: There were friends of ours leaving their bands and becoming DJs with just a laptop. We loved the idea and energy of dance music but we were not satisfied on stage without instruments, so we put together a way of performing with beats and playing live. We didn’t know of any bands like us so we had to figure it out from scratch. Cooper: We have grown up playing in indie rock bands but still had bands like Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and The Police molding our younger days. So with those influences we started working together with that energy in mind. What are some big things coming up for Hyena in 2012? Cooper: We just dropped an EP called “WeAreHyena” featuring Dave Keuning [The Killers] on a track as well as 6BLOCC, a dub-step DJ who Bassnectar plays with often, including on our track “The Kill Kids.” We are going to drop a video for our single “One Eye Open” and do a big push behind it.

BY MORGAN MYRMO

San Diego’s very own Hyena was created in 2010 as an answer to the increasingly popular music trend called Electronic Dance Music (EDM). In November 2011, Fashion 5.0 Magazine named Hyena “Best New Artist” in the annual 5.0 Music Awards. This June we caught up with Mike Cooper and Bryan Stratman to find out how they have achieved such remarkable success in such a short amount of time. What type of music do you play and what type of people typically go to your shows? Cooper: Well, what they’re calling it these days is indie/electro. Half live, half drum machines. We have the ability to play rock clubs like Casbah [in San Diego], Bottom of the Hill [San Francisco] and Beauty Bar [Las Vegas] as well as big dance clubs like Fluxx and Voyeur [both in San Diego] and Park City Live during Sundance with Afrojack, so I’d say all walks of life!

When did you decide that Hyena was going to be a major priority in your life, rather than just a side project? Stratman: Like a painter that finally found his color palette, we knew that we had to pursue this sound and we love performing this music. Everyone’s positive response really feeds our fire. Cooper: Music has also been number one for both of us our whole lives. It just took this team to see and live longevity. Hyena is just getting started. How have you become so popular so fast? What’s your secret? Cooper: Good songwriting, energetic stage performances, owning our own studio and promoting businesses. You can’t be lazy in this industry and you have to be able to do everything yourself, every day. If I wanted to book Hyena for my venue or party, who would I contact? Hyena@wearehyena.com.

FUN FACT: Bryan Stratman (keyboards) and drummer Mike Cooper (Transfer) are former Crash Encore members.

ALTERNATIVE STRATEGIES

GALLAGHER’S IRISH PUB NIGHTLIFE

Ocean Beach used to be known as a notso-clean destination, which often kept trendsetters at bay. Over the last few years, things have dramatically changed thanks to Gallagher’s Irish Pub, a neighborhood pub and nightclub in Ocean Beach. The location transformed Bullfrogs, which was known as a pool hall with stiff drinks and clandestine cigarette-smoking, into the hottest beach nightclub in the history of Ocean Beach. The Irish-themed bar immediately attracted a large and vibrant crowd with its live entertainment, great sound-system and centrally located dance floor. “The trends in entertainment for bars seems to be free, variety and popular. With this we rarely charge a cover and we showcase lots of different kinds of music and DJs. With bands and DJs on the same nights customers are given many options for something to enjoy. This helps us to keep bringing the people back to the best beach in San Diego,” said Clare McKevitt, general manager. Every day of the week the pub hosts a different event. Two huge non-weekend options are Wednesday, where Lady Dottie and the Diamonds perform live, and Thursday, which has transformed into the largest reggae night in San Diego. Each Thursday, TRC Soundsystem DJs and one local or touring reggae band perform for a full-house of eager, fashionable young partygoers. “We’ve made several changes over the first five years as we have become a respected venue for live entertainment. We have an amazing sound system and constantly upgrade our equipment to give us the best quality inside the pub. We hope to expand in the near future and possibly offer our customers the one thing they ask us for repeatedly, food,” said McKevitt. Now, with all things online, Gallagher’s stays upto-date and trendy by using social media sites to promote content to their customers.

“When we teamed up with the police officer’s associations of Chula Vista, Escondido and El Cajon, it was one of the proudest moments in our business. We became instrumental in their contract negotiations, handled their PR efforts and community relations, as well as their creative, social media and advertising campaigns. Ultimately, our agency helped save many police officers from being laid off in Chula Vista. It would be an understatement to say we are grateful for doing what we love and being able to support the community around us.” —WILLIAM LOPEZ, PRINCIPAL

Alternative Strategies is a marketing communications firm that is in the forefront of new social media and marketing trends. This San Diego agency offers services such as marketing, public relations, social media, graphic design, website design and media buying. “By offering all of these services in-house, we are able to keep all of our clients smiling with individualized attention and results-driven solutions,” said William Lopez, Ph.D., principal and founder of the agency. Alternative Strategies continuously wins awards for its services. For example, at the American Marketing Association Awards, the agency has won first place in graphic design, special events, integrated marketing plan, cause marketing integrated plan, website design, print advertising and reinvent brand identity. Winning such prestigious awards against other strong competitors displays the agency’s motivation and drive in all areas of their work. “We are a full-service agency and a one-stop shop, which means that our clients benefit from having a single partner who can handle all the important marketing functions of their business,” said Lopez. “Being truly successful in this game comes down to relationship building, which is why we build our business on nurturing powerful, fruitful relationships with and for our clients. That is the most substantial difference for our success.” The agency has a long list of notorious clients such as Delta Airlines, AT&T, The Brigantine Family of Restaurants and Kaiser Permanente, to name a few. Their extensive list of clients vary under different categories from airlines and auto, law enforcement associations, restaurants, fitness and beauty. Alternative Strategies is setting a high trend in San Diego by taking marketing and public relations services to an entirely new level. If your company is looking for branding and exposure, the team at Alternative Strategies is a great place to start.

VIXEN

PRODUCTIONS FASHION EVENTS

Vixen Productions is a premier company that produces fashion, music, and art events around San Diego. They specialize in Pop-up boutiques, an emerging trend in the retail world. People are fascinated by the idea of pop-ups, which are held in a single location for a limited time.

CYTORI

COSMETIC SURGERY TECHNOLOGY

Cytori Therapeutics has brought the biggest new trend in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to the table. Instead of using silicone breast implants, the company has created a way to reconstruct and enlarge women’s breasts by taking belly fat, inserting stem cells into the fat and transplanting it into the woman’s breast for natural, totally real-looking breast implants.

The most successful pop-ups are those revolving around a specific theme. Vixen Productions does just that and takes pop-up boutiques a step further by supporting local artists and talent around San Diego. They humbly believe in San Diego’s culture. In an effort to engage the buyers and the brands,

In today’s world, where anyone can change most every part of his or her body, this method is a newly safer way to undergo such a procedure. The procedure is less invasive and safer than traditional silicone implants. The concept of removing fat from one part of the body and injecting it in another part is not new, that process is called “fat transfer.” However, what is new with this procedure is the addition of the stem cells to the fat to make sure that the fat cells stay alive, so then they are more likely to become a natural part of the body without dissipating to other parts of the body. Also, with a natural appearance and feel to the breasts, this seems to be a strong candidate for a near-total replacement of the currently hot silicone breast enhancement option. Not only does this surgical procedure help individuals who want bigger breasts, it also is being hailed as a method to help post-mastectomy patients regenerate their natural, pre-surgical breast. The procedure costs around $5,000 to $8,000, however is only practiced in a few places such as Japan and Europe. It is unknown if this procedure will be widely available in the United States anytime soon. At the time of this press date, Cytori Therapeutics was unavailable for comment.

TALENT MANAGEMENT

NO TIES

MANAGEMENT The San Diego fashion industry is a growing fire full of ideas and fresh talent. There are so many aspects to keeping this industry high-class and successful. A big part of it is the modeling agencies representing the talent we have here in San Diego. The agency creating the biggest buzz is San Diego is No Ties Management. Referred to as “talent,” the models represented by No Ties have a certain “something” about them that the fashion world is drawn to. In many cases, No Ties Management has groomed them from day one. Jules Newmark, booking director for No Ties, tells us that what sets them apart from other agencies is the amount of time they invest in the transformation process for each model. This effort is prepping them to be sent all over the world to represent many top fashion brands across several markets. Another thing that sets No Ties apart is the time they invest in developing strong relationships with their models, which they feel is a huge factor when it comes to building their careers. A day in the life of the agency’s booking director can be described only as “a big happy family.” They are an asset to San Diego’s fashion industry, and are, without a doubt, setting a new bar for modeling agencies in North America.

OUTNSD.COM MARKETING // SOCIAL MEDIA

OutNsd.com has set a money-saving trend in San Diego for everyone 21 years and up. “We had just moved to Pacific Beach and with 60 plus bars with all different happy hours, we had no idea where to start. After talking to more people we realized that this was a problem all across the board,” said Trevor Jones, CEO and co-founder of outNsd.com. “That’s when we decided to create an online guide so everyone could find the best happy hour specials.”

2220 FERN ST // SOUTH PARK

GRAFFITI BEACH local, independent designers. This is great for the community to have more access to these designers they are learning about and growing to love. It is also fabulous to know there is a boutique that promises hidden gems that are yet to be mainstream; and from our own city!

In addition to the site, Trevor Jones put his creative mind to the test once again in 2011 by creating a sociallyresponsible, charity-driven company called Flex Watches. With the tagline “10 Colors, 10 Charities, 10 Percent,” the company has broken-through the red tape of corporate purchasers with game-changing moves that include MTV The Real World features, where Jones and cohort Travis Lubinsky played major supporting roles in the 2011 San Diego season.

For those who love fashion, art and music, Graffiti Beach offers a creative shopping environment that brings all three together. They also have an engaging and consistent blog that keeps people inspired and in the know of what’s going on in the store. For the creative minds, the fashion forward, and the San Diego lovers, Graffiti Beach is catered for you.

Jones rounds the Flex Watches and OutNSd.com social media team, which is the top powerhouse in San Diego. When you have a one-year old fashion brand based in San Diego, with 60,000 plus Facebook followers and 5,000 fans “talking about this” each week, it means people are playing along. From the east to the west, people are following the leader from San Diego named Trevor Jones.

FASHION RETAIL

There’s something more personal about shopping at a boutique. Perhaps it’s because they can be run in a way that caters to their own creative vision, or perhaps they don’t have work within the“for the masses” corporate walls. One thing is for certain, there is more freedom in running a boutique than a corporate behemoth. Graffiti Beach, which is brand-spanking new and located in the quaint South Park neighborhood, is carving its own unique wedge in the San Diego fashion world by primarily featuring exclusive pieces from

Two 21-year-old San Diego State University students who wanted to help college-budget locals originally created the happy-hour site four years ago. Since then, OutNsd.com has grown to the only one-stop site for happy hour specials, featuring restaurants and bars from everywhere in San Diego including Downtown, Pacific Beach, North Park, Del Mar, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, Hillcrest, Old Town, The College Area and Mission Beach.

FASHION // BEAUTY

SALON & BOUTIQUE DE MARCUS One emerging trend to hit the local fashion and beauty landscape is to link the retail world of fashion with beauty services, by housing them as a miniconglomerate in one building. Combining a boutique and salon under one roof, although usually run as two separate businesses, is convenient and relevant to today’s customers. One business that offers such services and is creating a powerful hype in San Diego is Salon &

Boutique de Marcus, located at 685 2nd Avenue, right across the street from the Horton Plaza Mall.

Salon & Boutique de Marcus founder Marcus Hanish is both an exquisite hair dresser and fashion designer. He is widely-known as the dress designer behind the “de Marcus” women’s clothing brand, with eclectic, high-fashion, one-of-a-kind dresses celebrated throughout the shop.

Alongside high-quality fashion that is hand-selected and shipped by Marcus himself from fashion cites across the world, the boutique also offers midrange items that cannot be found in other establishments. summer sizzle BY KATEY YURKO

Say hello to a sexy old friend, the retro-style swimsuit. Out of the thrift shops and into boutiques, from storage boxes to big-box stores, this ladylike style is the queen bee of summer swimwear. Beach goin’ babes now have more trendy options beyond just the string bikinis and sexy cut-out one-pieces to choose from. With bombshell beauties like Brigitte Bardot and Zooey Deschanel swimming in our heads, we drew inspiration from the free-spirited fashion of the 1970s mixed in with 1960s glamour. Va va voom!

MAKEUP BREAKUP WHEN TO THROW OUT YOUR OLD MAKEUP

BY MEAGAN BROWN

Believe it or not, makeup has a fall and a spring cleaning agenda. Just like food in the cabinet, your makeup has an expiration date, too. Use these helpful tips to clean out your makeup drawer of old or expired products and see what you could add to get better use out of something you already have.

LIPSTICK SHELF LIFE: 6 MONTHS- 1 YEAR The ultimate test to know whether your lipstick has gone bad (which is called rancid) is the odor of the product. Lipstick that has gone rancid tends to have a crayon-like odor. Kiss those rancid lipsticks away and try the new season’s colors.

FOUNDATION

MASCARA

SHELF LIFE: 6 - 9 MONTHS If you haven’t used your current foundation in that timeframe it’s time to be replaced. Step out of your comfort zone and try a new one! This season is all about glowing, radiant skin!

SHELF LIFE: 3 - 4 MONTHS Take no chances with liquid products around your eyes, especially mascara. Once you put the applicator back in the tube it’s a breeding ground for bacteria. This is why not sharing mascara in the makeup world is hygiene rule #1. Next time you’re in the market for a new mascara try EnvyDerm’s Eyelash Enhancement and Conditioning Volume Mascara. This mascara helps repair lash damage, promotes longer, stronger lashes and is paraben-free!

TIP: To prolong the life of your foundation try using a spatula or another tool to get the product out of the bottle to avoid crosscontamination from the bacteria on your hands. Using a foundafounda tion with a pump applicator can also reduce cross-contamination levels. When using a powder, use a powder brush instead of a sponge, which can harbor dirt and oil from your face and increase the likelihood of breakouts.

“Soft Yet Sexy” EyeShadow palette by Manna Kadar. Available online at mannakadarcosmetics.com, $45.00.

EnvyDerm’s Eyelash Enhancement and Conditioning Volume Mascara. Available online at envyderm.com, $36.00.

TIPS FOR EYES Tired of your black and/ or brown eyeliner? Try Manna Kadar’s Transfix. It magically transforms any eye shadow you already own into a smudge-proof eyeliner. Getting out of the same makeup look can be a challenge, so when in the market for a new eye shadow remember to build with your basics. Matte shadows are sophisticated and work on everyone. You can always add shimmer, but taking shimmer out is impossible, which is why we love the Manna Kadar “Soft yet Sexy” Eye Shadow pallet.

Trans-fix Eye EyeshadowEyeliner Transformer. Available online at mannakadarcosmetics.com, $19.00.

BONUS TIP: Shadow blending troubles? When in a blending bind add a little shimmer, and voila, perfectly blended eye shadow.

IT’S COMPLICATED THE TRUTH ABOUT DATING A BRIT BY HAYLEY UNDERWOOD

It’s that time again. It’s the time that most of us mere mortals are left to gaze in wonderment upon the world’s top athletic gods as they compete with strength and determination for the Olympic gold. Rather than racing around Olympic Park, we sit, glued to the TV, regretting the day we quit gymnastics at age seven. Whether you agree to their location or not, this year the Olympics are being held in London. This saddens me dearly. Not because I question their state of security, mind you, as I know all too well about their security measures regarding visa and immigration control (they’re rather strict), but because it’s a constant reminder of my own feat of strength and determination: dating a Brit. Don’t get me wrong, “Jonathan” is a lovely, intelligent and handsome man, but dating him took more mental, emotional and physical training than dare I say most Olympians will experience in their entire careers. Then again, I hadn’t dedicated my life to becoming an Anglo-dating champion, despite every romantic comedy’s best efforts. From the moment I met Jonathan, it was apparent that he was more Mark Darcy than Daniel Cleaver. This, in theory, would’ve been great. After all, Mr. Darcy was the male protagonist in the movie Bridget Jones’s Diary, but lest we forget, on the surface, masking his understatedly sweet underbelly, was a cold shell of a man who was devoid of any emotional expression. Sure, Ms. Jones was able to accept this, especially after the Hugh Grant character ruined her like an East London borough after the riots, but for me it was more difficult than trying to beat Michael Phelps in a freestyle relay. We met on New Year’s Eve at a mutual friend’s party in Camden. There were only

a handful of singles present and as is customary, each member of the various couples attempted to work their matchmaking magic. My particular Brit wasn’t meant to be my match. In fact, I had been warned against him. To my British friends he was arrogant and difficult to date. Male friends felt he was a braggart about his Cambridge education. Female friends thought he was a lothario. One girl mentioned that they had been on two dates, which she paid for, and after the second date, they didn’t speak again. I heeded their warnings, but from our first introduction forward I knew there was no turning back. Sure, he was everything his peers had mentioned, but whether it was the alcohol or the accent, the more we talked, the more difficult it was for me to register why any of that mattered. We spoke of rugby (he was the captain at his university), music (he wrote music and played in a band), literature (we shared a love of both the British classics as well modern American short stories), travel (how Americans don’t embrace the idea of a gap year is beyond me) and school (he was in his final year of medical school, I was working on my masters). All was going well, until we heard the countdown to midnight.

This was when the cold front entered. As the voices around us chanted down the numbers, Jonathan took a step back, placing an invisible barrier between us, and began awkwardly looking around. Slightly taken aback by this maneuver, I excused myself to join my friends. After all, I’m not Bridget Jones, I don’t have the patience to wait for some cold British man to warm up to me. As the party began to disperse, we both made our way to the door. Outside, he pulled me aside to say goodbye and again, whether it was the alcohol, the accent, or just my outspoken American nature I looked him straight in the eye and blatantly asked him why he hadn’t kissed me at midnight. Now he, slightly taken aback by my maneuver, looked dumbfounded, but rather than running away, he pulled me close and kissed me. Despite the snowfall around us, it seemed as though his icy exterior had begun to melt, but then again this was only the beginning. Don’t fret, there will be plenty more to come. After all, one doesn’t win a gold medal without extensive training and a few trials first.

Hayley Underwood is just a girl, like any other, who has had more than her fair sure of great, and not so great, dates. A San Diego native, Hayley graduated from UC, Santa Barbara with a BA in English and Art History, which lead her to a career at InStyle Magazine and instyle.com. Today Hayley is a development producer at Shilo, working with clients such as Project Runway, Verizon and McDonald’s.

BONUS TIP: Understand that British men won’t get over emotional, they may however cry over a football match.

AUGUST HOROSCOPE BY CATHY MOE WITH HALI WINTHROP What is the true definition of your horoscope? It is derived from the name of the constellation directly in-line with the sun and the Earth, such that the sun falls directly between the constellation and the Earth, on the day you were born. This definition reflects 13 constellations that are applicable during the Earth’s annual orbit. The ancient Babylonians, who created the first horoscope thousands of years ago, only wanted 12 signs to keep things easy, so they left off Ophiucus, which we now call “The 13th Sign.” As of February 2011, Fashion 5.0 has published the true horoscope, as noted by dates [in brackets] which are accurate to those born in the 20th and 21st centuries.

ARIES The Ram { April 19 – May 13 } A hot summer for you, Aries! It’s a great time to see through illusions. Wear what highlights your dynamic personality. Otherwise, how will anyone know who you are? Being color-full breaks through barriers to a new and special relationship. TAURUS The Bull { May 14 – June 19 } Going to the beach with a friend? Enjoying a picnic with your favorite group, or talking a walk by yourself? Be sure to unwind in August. Opening to new points of view reaps big rewards for you. Romance is yummy when you yourself feel comfortably relaxed. GEMINI The Twins { June 20 – July 20 } You attract what you’re thinking. Is it a new career, a relationship, or exciting travel you’d like to magnetize? Keep on top of your texts and social networking. Lines of communication are wide open. Let boutique owners know which dress, hat, and pair of sandals are on your current wish list! CANCER The Crab { July 21 – August 9 } You’re mastering your emotions. Be a laser beam of focus. As your scope increases, you learn what’s most important to you. Cancers have a soft nostalgic gene. Wear what makes you feel beautiful. Love and romance go hand in hand when the feelings fit. LEO The Lion { August 10 – September 15 } Brush your mane, pull your shoulders back and walk with the confidence of the lioness you are. The Stars say this August equals high social standing. Event invites skyrocket. Only you have the power to give yourself approval. Dazzle with vibrantly textured tops and handbags in rhinestone glory. VIRGO The Maiden { September 16 – October 30 } Stabilize your desires and do what’s required to achieve them. Give yourself a lift by letting go of what you no longer need. Clear a space for something new to happen. Go for a mini-mani-pedi to boost your self-esteem. Romance is staring right at you – can you see it? LIBRA God of Justice { October 31 – November 22 } A new goal calls in August. You are invited to take your brightest lightest self to work and play. Say what you feel and you’ll feel free! Wearing an animal print brings out your wild side. Romance is a combination of balance and risk.

SCORPIO The Scorpion { November 23 – November 29 } This is a fiery month for you. Apply yourself as you practice self-improvement choices. Passion runs through your veins. Make bold fashion choices. Unhook the latch to your heart. Let yourself believe you can have what your spirit whispers.

OPHIUCHUS The Serpent Holder { November 30 – December 17 } The Serpent Healer guides your ability to renew yourself. A bumpy road leads to smooth paths after it is cleared. Be practical with your purchases, then add a little dazzle to make yourself the focal point. Reach out to let someone new in. SAGITTARIUS The Archer { December 18 – January 18 } Be naughty this month. Take risks to show your sultry side. Flirting is only sometimes a Sagittarius trait, so get lots of practice. Connect with someone on the other side of the world for your next adventure. Develop your travel wardrobe! CAPRICORN The Goat { January 19 – February 15 } Big changes for you, Capricorn! Leaving something behind? It it’s meant to be, you’ll be reunited. In the meantime, look your best in the best. Don’t be afraid to splurge to remind yourself of your value. A massage or hike brings your spirits back to par. AQUARIUS The Water Bearer { February 16 – March 11 }Jump into opportunities headed your way. Remember to look beneath the surface. Enjoy socializing without knowing what it will bring. Test out new styles to express your creative spirit. Let romance rock you with laughter and your expansive point of view.
