> Lulu s’apprête à vivre le pire cauchemar imaginable pour un adolescent de 14 ans : quitter la ville et ses amis pour Broby, un ennuyeux bled où elle ne connaît personne. N’ayant que son petit frère et sa mère comme compagnie, la jeune fille comble sa monotonie en lisant divers ouvrages sur la magie noire. Ce sujet passionne Lulu à un point tel qu’elle s’amuse régulièrement à convoquer les morts par l’entremise d’une table de Ouija et de quelques chandelles. Un petit jeu sans conséquence, rien de plus. Une nuit pourtant, l’une de ses séances tourne très mal. L’âme d’un défunt prend possession du corps de son frère et supplie ensuite Lulu de le joindre dans sa quête contre le Mal. Il s’avère que cet esprit bienveillant était autrefois membre d’une loge secrète ayant comme mission de mettre fin au règne de terreur du Nécromancien, un être maléfique doté d’une puissance inhumaine. Après des siècles de silence, le sorcier diabolique a élu domicile sur une île près de Broby où il s’apprête secrètement à envahir le monde. Lulu doit absolument l’arrêter et ce, même si avoir le sort de l’humanité

entre les mains signifie désobéir au couvre-feu ! Avec la présence de THE SUBSTITUTE et d’ISLAND OF LOST SOULS à Fantasia cette année, nous avons la preuve que le Danemark est capable de produire de grands films pouvant plaire à toute la famille. Même s’il s’adresse principalement à un jeune public, ISL AND contient suffisamment d’éléments sombres et horrifiques pour faire frémir n’importe quel amateur de films de genres. Sans vouloir trop en dévoiler, disons que l’exhaltante rencontre entre Lulu et un vilain épouvantail s’avère digne de SLEEPY HOLLOW de Tim Burton. Le film fait également preuve d’une certaine maturité grâce à quelques touches subtiles d’humour noir et un penchant pour l’autodérision. Bien qu’il doit beaucoup à HARRY POTTER , ISLAND OF LOST SOULS l’emporte sur la série hollywoodienne en ne sombrant jamais dans la facilité ou le mélodrame. Si vous avez aimé THE GREAT YOK AI WAR de Miike, vous serez inévitablement séduit par cette œuvre magique. — Simon L aperrière

> Lulu’s living a 14-year-old’s worst nightmare, leaving the city and all her friends there to relocate to Broby, a dull-as-death hamlet where she doesn’t know a soul. With nobody but her little brother and her mom for company, Lulu fights off boredom by burying herself in a variety of books about black magic. The topic is so salient to Lulu that she even entertains herself by summoning the dead by way of an Ouija board and a bunch of candles. A little game to pass the time, nothing more. One night, however, her séance goes terribly awry. The spirit of a deceased person takes possession of her little brother’s body and through him, pleads with Lulu to join a crusade against the forces of evil. It’s revealed that this benign spectre was once part of secret society devoted to bringing an end to reign of terror of the Necromancer, a malevolent being of inhuman power. With THE SUBSTITUTE and ISLAND OF LOST SOULS at Fantasia this year, proof is at hand that Denmark is more than capable of banging out movies that can delight the whole family. Even if it is aimed primarily at a pre-teen audience, ISLAND packs in enough darkness and sheer creepiness to please any lover of genre film. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that the eventual encounter between Lulu and her nemesis is on par with the payoff of Tim Burton’s SLEEPY HOLLOW. ISLAND also boasts a grown-up’s sense of subtle black humour and self-parody. Though it owes a debt to HARRY POTTER , ISLAND OF LOST SOULS outdoes the Hollywood series by nimbly dodging the potential pitfalls of oversimplification and melodrama.
