BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Dear FAIS Family and Friends,

evolve and change to better reflect our mission is very rewarding.”
As we enter our 36th year as a school, our campus continues to change and evolve in subtle—and not-so-subtle—ways. This fall we will have a newly remodeled campus kitchen, which provides an invaluable learning space for our students and teachers, our after-school cooking classes, ACE and Arts Weeks workshops, summer camps (and, of course, snack preparation for all students each and every day). Our heartfelt thanks to all the donors to this year’s Special Appeal at the Gala Auction, who helped make this kitchen remodel possible through their generosity. Our “new” Center for the Arts is now an established, flourishing heart of our campus—it’s hard to imagine how we managed without it! Also new is a beautiful wooden sign marking the main entrance of our campus, and three beautiful and striking kinetic sculptures, donated by generous anonymous donors this summer and strategically placed around campus. Watching our campus evolve and change to better reflect our school mission is very rewarding. In this fall’s FAIS Magazine, you’ll read about our assorted extracurricular programs, which have been developed over the years to augment the educational program we offer at FAIS. You’ll also hear from Ursula Garcia, Chair of the Board of Trustees, about some exciting new changes ahead which will help advance our school vision and support our mission. The time is coming when we will need to expand our campus with new buildings that continue to support our program and robust enrollment. Of course, as we approach any undertaking of this scale, it is essential that our community of parents, alumni parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends continue their longstanding tradition of support. FAIS is fortunate to have a strong history of fundraising success, starting with the campaign to build our current main campus in 1998, to the 2008 campaign to renovate the Rose Préau and add classrooms to Satellite 4, and our most recent fundraising effort, to establish the Center for the Arts. Over the coming months and year you will be hearing more about these exciting plans. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the School during this next phase of campus growth, and to work closely with members of our community who continue to demonstrate such a strong commitment to the future of FAIS. NEW FACES AT FAIS David Billeaud, new 4th grade teacher in the Lower School, comes to FAIS via ten years of teaching in France, two years at Lycée franco-japonais de Tokyo, and most recently, four years at the International School of Boston. David received both history and teaching degrees in La Rochelle, where he was born. David and his wife, Camille Rueff, who is also joining us in the Lower School as a 2nd grade teacher, have a daughter, Jeanne, at FAIS in kindergarten.
Half Finnish and half Iraqi, Laura
Birshan comes to FAIS as the extracurricular programs assistant
with an interesting blend of background and experience. After graduating from the University of Santa Barbara City College with a degree in English (while also studying culinary arts), Laura worked in development at the college level, for an international language school, and for a preschool. Most recently, Laura was head chef at Cyril’s at Clay Pigeon Winery. She is excited to make a full circle and be working in an educational setting again.
Kelly Chen will be teaching Mandarin Chinese at Gilkey International Middle School. Kelly was born and raised in Taiwan, and obtained her master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Salisbury University. She taught Chinese at the university level for two years and also holds a certificate in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages.
Christine Heiler will teach 6th and 8th grade English and 7th grade social studies, after having joined the community as a substitute this past year. Originally from Chicago, Christine holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Illinois Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in teaching and learning from DePaul University. She has been teaching for over 20 years, in schools in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C., with 15 years of experience in middle school English and social studies.
Tiffanie Herrmann will be joining the Middle School to teach 6th grade math (French track), and 6th and 7th grade Art of Geometry. Tiffanie is from Montpellier, in southern France, where she received her certification to teach mathematics. She also holds a teaching certification from Ontario, Canada where she taught at an International Baccalaureate school. Since moving to Portland in 2010, Tiffanie taught at Portland French School and Northwest Academy before joining FAIS.

Paola Iturralde hails from La Paz, Bolivia, and speaks Spanish, German, English, and French.
She
studied industrial design in Mexico, and has worked for several years as a designer and professor. Paola will be teaching Spanish in the Middle School. She and husband Vincent Brès, Lower School Division Head, have two sons at FAIS, Daniel in 4th grade and Antoine in kindergarten.
Véronique Pain, new 1st grade teacher at FAIS, has taught in France, at a French immersion program in Louisiana, and most recently in the Seattle area, for seven years each at French International School of Washington and French American School of Puget Sound. She received her teaching credentials in Poitiers, France. Veronique’s daughter, Elisa, is in the 4th grade at FAIS.
After teaching abroad for the past five years in international schools in Brazil and Turkey, Tawny

has joined the FAIS faculty as a Lower School English teacher. Tawny is originally from Portland, Oregon, and received her bachelor’s degree from Portland State University and her master’s degree in teaching from Concordia University.
Joining FAIS as a new 2nd grade teacher is Camille Rueff, who most recently taught at the International School of Boston and has also taught in various settings in France for the past twelve years. Camille hails from Toulouse and enjoys playing rugby in her spare time. She and her husband, David Billeaud, also a new teacher in the Lower School, have two daughters, including Jeanne, who is in kindergarten at FAIS.
Laure Seugé, who likes to be known as “Nurse Laurie,” is a pediatric nephrologist by training, having completed medical school in Paris and residency and fellowship in Strasbourg, in eastern France. Laure joined FAIS as its nurse after spending the past two years volunteering at OHSU in pediatric nephrology (which she will continue to do for one afternoon a week). Laure and her family moved to Portland two years ago, and two of her three children are enrolled at FAIS: Augustine, in 2nd grade, and Basile, in 1st grade.
Candice Smith joins the FAIS community as its director of development following a year residing in Bordeaux, France and five years in Brisbane, Australia, where she was working as the advancement director at The Women’s College within the University of Queensland. Originally from Oregon, Candice worked in fundraising for several Portland-area colleges and universities, including Reed and Lewis & Clark, before moving abroad.

SHOW & TELL Eighth Grade Adventures Abroad Each spring, most of the graduating 8th graders have the opportunity to spend two weeks abroad in the country of the language they’ve tackled for the past three years. This year’s trips to Austria, Belgium and France, Spain, Costa Rica, and China were a highlight and culmination of hours of language study and practice, as our students navigated new cities and experiences while speaking their second (and sometimes third or fourth, with students who’ve gone through the PS-8th program) language. Upon their return to the U.S. and FAIS, each 8th grader completes a scrapbook featuring the people and places they’ve seen, the food they’ve eaten, and how the trip enhanced their view of the world. Budding Scientists Tackle First Lower School Science Tournament Some of our younger students were tasked with scientific questions during their first annual science tournament during May, held for five days during recess time. Sixty-nine 3rd through 5th graders were placed in groups, mixed by age, and presented with a science challenge. Points were awarded for completion of the challenge within the time allotted, and collaboration among the team members. The challenges were novel and various, including “Brain Saver,” where they were to invent a helmet that will protect a raw egg when dropped from ten feet onto a concrete sidewalk; “Bright Idea,” for which they built a hands-free reading light; and “Bridges,” where they built a cantilever, then joined together with another group to build a bridge with two cantilevers. In the end, the “A” team had the highest score, with team members Sutton Warmkessel (5th); Natalie Bernhard (4th); and Sloane Warmkessel (3rd), pictured here with science teacher Molly Hamill.
Fête de La Musique Welcomes Portland Luminaries The School community celebrated its third annual Fête de la Musique this spring, and some well-known Portland musicians (who also happen to be FAIS parents) were featured among the performances. Michael Allen Harrison, renowned songwriter and pianist, thrilled several small audiences with his music, and even played side-by-side at the piano with a few students. The day ended with a lively performance in the gym by Pink Martini, with FAIS parent China Forbes and Thomas Lauderdale (pictured at left), who performed several French songs resulting in audience participation from teachers and students.

Q. Why is this a good time for the School to think about new buildings?
A.
Our school is in good shape! Healthy enrollment and good
financial discipline has put FAIS in a strong position with regard to reserves and our balance sheet allows for a degree of internally funded capital expenditures. We have made enormous progress over the last five years, by building on the fantastic efforts and contributions of the family members, staff, faculty and some generous donors who are now a part of our community. And, there is a clear demand and need for us to begin to upgrade and replace our buildings now, before many of the modular buildings begin to require costly and unproductive repairs.
Q. What preliminary steps has the Board taken to move forward on a possible capital project?
Q. What is the role of the FAIS Board of Trustees? A. Our school Board has two key responsibilities: the first is to ensure sound long-term management of the School’s financial resources; in essence, to make sure the budget is balanced, and will continue to be balanced through a variety of potential future scenarios. The Board also sets the School’s long-term strategic plan in support of FAIS’ mission and vision. These dual roles help to ensure that the School’s programs, facilities, and capabilities serve the best interests of the FAIS community today, and long into the future.
Q. What is the current Board focused on at this time?

BOORA has an excellent reputation in the Portland community, and has worked with several other schools and educational institutions on similar projects. 2014-2015 SPECIAL EVENTS
FAIS HAPPENINGS La Fête du Vin Each autumn, as the leaves (and rain) are beginning to fall on the FAIS campus, the School hosts its first community event of the school year, la Fête du Vin. This past fall, parent co-chairs Kim Hasle and Shannon Conley welcomed more than 200 current and former FAIS parents, faculty, and friends to the Atrium at Montgomery Park during November. The guests danced under twinkling garlands of lights and paper lanterns to Latin music by Pilon d’Azucar, sampled gourmet hors d’oeuvres, and tasted wines from Bergström, Cameron, Domaine Drouhin, Patton Valley, Petit Monde, and Scott Paul. Many thanks to our guest vintners and distributors, who donated 30 to 50 percent of their wine sales to support programs at FAIS, and to our guests, who supported this event so generously. Holiday Market As the days get colder and anticipation of a new year begins, FAIS took time out last December to invite its own and the wider Portland community to celebrate at the 2014 Holiday Market. Sponsored by the Alliance Française and attended by more than 1,100 shoppers, the Market featured entertainment by students, parents, and faculty, setting the mood as shoppers perused highend crafts, gifts, jewelry, clothing, and more; a portion of the vendor proceeds was donated back to the School. Merci beaucoup to our Holiday Market Co-Chairs, Ashley Schaaf and Amy WildeTaylor; Mireille Jeukens, our entertainment chair; and the entire Holiday Market committee for their time and talent they dedicated to this event. Angela Tipton, class of 2015, was among the student vendors at our 2014 Holiday Market.
Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day As our students and teachers headed into the final stretch of the academic school year this past spring, some of our students’ most important family members and friends visited the FAIS campus during May, for the 17th Annual Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day. Two hundred guests were welcomed by Head of School Pam Dreisin for brunch and musical entertainment from kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 4th grade students. Post-brunch, as is tradition, classrooms in all corners of the campus were open for visits, creating treasured memories for both the students and their guests. Many thanks to our teachers, parents, students, and staff volunteers for their help and support of this memorable event. Lola McAndrew joins grandson Thomas Huff and classmate Elsa Lane in a laugh.
2014-2015 SPECIAL EVENTS
Le Cirque Stiltwalkers and contortionists, a ring toss (over wine bottles), black-and-white bunting, gold circus animals, and floating balloon bouquets all contributed to the spirited atmosphere at FAIS’ 27th Annual Gala, Le Cirque, led by parent cochairs Bonnie Stewart and Grayson Dempsey. Guests flooded into downtown Portland’s Sentinel Hotel and bid competitively over class baskets and high-end silent auction items, fueled by savory hors d’oeuvres and Champagne. Paddles were then raised high while guests enjoyed gourmet offerings from Jake’s Catering and wines from FAIS family winery Bergström and distributor Petit Monde. This year’s Gala raised more than $255,000 to support the FAIS operating budget, including nearly $70,000 from the Special Appeal paddle raise to renovate our campus kitchen. After the live auction, the guests with stamina danced the night away to the music of DJ Onlychild at the Post-Gala Celebration. Thank you to our Mistress of Ceremonies, Serena Zilliacus, Stokes Auctioneer Brad Caldwell, the entire Gala Committee, and all of the Gala volunteers, donors, sponsors, and advertisers. How did your FAIS education prepare you for Dartmouth and beyond? If critical thinking is the bedrock of liberal arts education, then I think my years at FAIS indelibly shaped my intellectual growth and curiosity. To study even basic elementary concepts through a non-American lens empowered me with a wider, more three-dimensional worldview. Along with my upbringing in a Czech-American home, this kind of education normalized the idea that different perspectives work better in concert than in opposition. Looking back, I also think attending FAIS sparked a gut instinct to question any status quo. In first or second grade, I came home one day with a revelation, stunned to have discovered that kids and teachers at other schools spoke English in class, as opposed to French. Over the years, I recognized that attending immersion school was a huge privilege, offering me experiences that other kids in my neighborhood couldn’t easily access. It taught me to think twice about anything labeled as “normal” or “the way it’s always been,” including in my own life. It’s a gut instinct that has served me well. And a lot of credit goes to my great teachers for trusting us to tackle difficult issues at a young age. I remember broaching how colonialism had brought the French language to West Africa and Southeast Asia (in second grade), or debating whether the Catholic Church was prepared to elect a pope from a community of color (seventh grade). Interacting with the world beyond our own horizons was a formative lesson in critical thinking and empathy.
Did your FAIS education have an influence on your career choice or your field of study? If so, how? Perhaps it’s cliché, but FAIS erased the borders that otherwise might have held back some of my most pivotal life experiences thus far. To write my senior thesis, I insisted on getting out of the library and traveling as far as Argentina to directly interview the activists I was studying. When charting the path for my first year after college, I embraced a rare chance with the UN to live and work abroad in Budapest. In no small part thanks to FAIS, I’ve been able to take these opportunities quite literally as far as I possibly could.
Are there skills you learned while at FAIS that you have applied to your career? I remember being coached to find beauty in precision. Under the surface of every assignment, whether it was reciting poems par coeur or casting angles with a compass, my teachers gave a lesson in paying close attention to detail without requiring perfection. It’s a value and a skill that I carried with me through college and now into my career, knowing it has made me a more thorough researcher and a more meticulous writer. In the same vein, I probably owe a great deal to the French language itself. Francophones value their language more than any other people I’ve come across. Take, for example, that the humanities formed the core of my early education, or that French comedy sets itself a step above the rest with its hallmark acrobatic wordplay. French has always inspired me to approach language as a creative tool. It’s a trait I can’t imagine developing through a different language, although it has absolutely influenced the way I express myself in any language. And I can’t be the only FAIS alum who indulges in reading about the latest study lauding the cognitive benefits of multilingualism. It’s self-gratifying to be sure, but I think most of us would agree that we’ve gained a great deal more than just linguistic fluency.
How many languages do you speak, and what are they? I speak five languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Czech, and English.
What do you envision for your career for the next five years? The next ten years? This year of editorial work for the UN, which focused on international development in the post-Soviet region, has inspired me to pursue a career in writing and journalism. I hope to start off doing investigative work in the U.S., perhaps graduating someday to international reporting. There’s nowhere I’d rather be than neck deep in a story, connecting dots that aren’t plainly linked and picking up insights that change how we understand our society. Among my many personal projects, I am perhaps most excited to continue growing Mission: Citizen, a Portland-based non-profit organization that I co-founded with a cohort that included FAIS alumna Emilie Segura. Through Mission: Citizen, passionate high school students are helping immigrants across the Portland metro area prepare thoroughly and thoughtfully for the U.S. naturalization exam. The work is incredibly rewarding, and working side by side with a classmate and friend from my days in Maternelle has made it that much better.

Stephen Lockwood ('01) graduated in 2008 from St Mark's School, and attended the Faculty of Arts at McGill University, graduating in 2008. He received a master's degree in public health from the OHSU/PSU program in 2011, graduated this past May with an MD from McGill Faculty of Medicine, and is now enrolled in a combined anatomical and clinical residency program at Harvard, Brigham and Women's Hospital. Estelle Berger (‘07) is currently entering her senior year at Brown University, where she is majoring in urban studies. Alyssa Renck (’07) recently graduated from Parsons The New School for Design with a BFA in fashion design. She also finished up a summer internship at Altuzarra, culminating with the SS16 fashion show during New York Fashion Week in September. She has one more semester to finish up her BA in culture and media studies from Eugene Lang The New School for Liberal Arts. She is currently interning for NBC Universal for Saturday Night Live’s costume department.
Alexander Tomlinson (‘07) graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in biochemistry, and is now working in a research lab at the Casey Eye Institute at OHSU. During his gap year before applying to medical school, he’s planning to spend his time traveling and continuing to play ultimate frisbee.
Makenna Huck (‘08) is attending the University of Oregon and will graduate in June of 2016. She is currently interning for a local advertising and marketing agency in downtown Eugene, and she is the assistant firm director of an on-campus public relations firm called Allen Hall Public Relations. Makenna is also very involved in her sorority, running all of their social media accounts. Makenna hopes to continue working in the field of public relations and communications for an agency or corporation after graduating next spring. Madeleine Knox (‘08) is a junior at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY studying industrial design. She took a gap year prior to Pratt and traveled through Europe with the WWOOF program (WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms). Madeleine is also still actively pursuing aerial performance arts which she started in the FAIS gym, working with Pendulum Aerial Arts.
Warren Piehl ('08) recently graduated magna cum laude from Portland State University with a B.S. in speech and hearing sciences and a minor in psychology. He was recently accepted into University of Washington's doctor of audiology program and is continuing his studies in Seattle this fall. Warren plans to pursue a dual AuD/PhD degree, focusing on balance science and disorders.
Shayan Joobbani (‘10) is a second year student at Portland State University, studying civil engineering. He shares that he spent a lot of time outdoors this past spring and summer, including a fishing trip to Utah. He is also a volunteer responder for Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.
Cory Martinez (‘10) is back at home in Portland since completing training last spring as a combat engineer in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He now reports to the local base once a month for drill and is enrolled at Portland Community College.
Natalie Berger (‘11) graduated from OES in June and is taking a gap year before starting at Kenyon College next year, where she will spend her first fall at the Aegean Center for Fine Arts.
Elizabeth Fosler-Jones ('11) continues to work with the program she founded three years ago, Yo Ghana, which links local children with pen pals in Africa. The program has already connected over a thousand children from across the world. Elizabeth is planning to take a gap year after graduating from Central Catholic this past spring, and is traveling in Ghana this fall.
Kieran McTague (’11) graduated from Lincoln this June, and is attending the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio this fall. He plans to major in international relations and French, with a minor in Spanish. He also will be joining the varsity tennis team, as a freshman. Kieran has traveled to Europe every summer, visiting many countries, spending most of his time in France for tennis training and competing on clay courts. This past fall and spring he passed the DALF C1 and C2 exams.
Kylee Huck (‘11) graduated from Sunset High School, and is currently attending the University of Oregon, studying human physiology.
Laura Miles (‘11) graduated from Cleveland High School, where she continued with her studies in Mandarin and worked as a student mentor and tutor in French. Laura is taking a gap year, spending much of it in Antigua, Guatemala, where she'll be volunteering in an animal clinic/shelter and studying Spanish. Laura spent this past summer taking a year's worth of Spanish at PCC to prepare for her trip, and reports that she will soon decide where to attend college. Devon Thompson (‘11) made a royal visit to the FAIS campus, visiting 1st and 2nd grades in her official role as the 2015 Rose Festival Princess from St. Mary's Academy. She spent time reading with the students, and shared what it is like to be an important part of one of Portland's longest-standing traditions, the Rose Festival Court, now celebrating over a century of crowning Rose Festival Queens. Devon is attending Emory University. Luisa Valentini (‘11) reports that she just completed her IB diploma and graduated from the German European School in Singapore. This past summer she and her family moved to Hamburg, Germany, and Luisa recently moved again, to Norwich, UK to attend the University of East Anglia, where she will study medicine. Luisa says that “Gilkey most certainly played an important part to getting me to where I am at now.”
Julia Espinosa (‘14) spent the summer road-tripping with her mother to San Jose, CA, for the 2015 Summer Nationals in fencing. Julia competed in five women’s foil events, and ended up in third place in the Division 3 event, earning her "C" rating in foil.
For the past two years, Raimy Hamdan (’14) has been volunteering for Abby’s Closet, a Portland organization that supplies formal dresses for high school girls to wear to their proms at no cost. She now serves on their student board. Raimy is a sophomore at Oregon Episcopal School.
Anya Bennett (’14) competed in the Junior Olympics in water polo this past summer, in Orange County, CA. Her team, THills Water Polo Club, is ranked 1st in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii and 41st in the United States, overall. Anya is a sophomore at Lincoln High School.
