GUIDING PRINCIPLES DEVELOP GLOBAL CITIZENS FOSTER MULTI-LANGUAGE ABILITY SHAPE ACTIVE LEARNERS DELIVER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

02

Dear FAIS Community, Welcome to this year’s Annual Report on Philanthropy. This publication celebrates the incredible generosity of everyone who so willingly gave their time, treasures, and talents in order to continue to deliver our incredible learning opportunities in this most unusual 2020-2021 school year. I am grateful that we were able to celebrate our fifth and eighth graders in person at the end of the year. It was a delight to see so many faces back on campus. Our Annual Fund remained strong and we held a virtual Gala that raised a record amount, including a record breaking Special Appeal to remodel our Inukai Family Foundation Gymnasium and the Rose Préau. All of this was possible because of you! Thank you! It is your support that enables us to cultivate intellect, foster multilingual learners, develop global citizens, and promote an appreciation for diverse cultures and experiences. Because of the philanthropy of our community, we are able to prepare our students for their futures through immersion and inquiry based programs. As we embark on a new unique school year, it continues to be the generosity of all you—our parents, trustees, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends—that enables us to deliver our mission in innovative, creative, and nimble ways. I am genuinely grateful to be a member of this wonderfully committed and generous community, and I look forward to seeing you on campus soon. Sincerely,

Scott Hardister

Dear FAIS Community, Welcome back to a new school year! I am looking forward to the opportunity to come together as a school and return to some of the traditions that have been part of the fabric of this community. Looking back on the past year, I am full of pride in how our families, grandparents, and friends came together in support of FAIS. We hosted a unique, remote wine tasting for Fê te du Vin that allowed us to connect directly with the winemakers. We blew our goal out of the water during the Virtual Gala, celebrating the silver linings of the past year and raising funds to completely renovate the Inukai Family Foundation Gymnasium and support movement on campus. On top of all that, we had more donors to the Annual Fund than any of the previous four years. Seeing our students back on campus this spring reminded me of why we’re here—to provide a creative, imaginative, unique, and challenging learning environment for our students. My job is to help support that goal through philanthropy, and I couldn’t be more honored to be in this role. I can’t wait for the opportunity to connect with you in person in the coming year. I can only imagine the height of what we can achieve together, seeing what we’ve been able to accomplish apart. Thank you for your commitment and support of FAIS. Here’s to a new year!

VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP The commitment of our dedicated volunteers plays an essential role at FAIS. Not only do our volunteers model responsible, service-oriented behavior to our students; they are the wheels that keep so many of our traditions alive. Our volunteers serve in classrooms, recruit and welcome new families, and coordinate events that strengthen our community. Thank you to ALL of our volunteers. Your wholehearted dedication to FAIS is so greatly appreciated.

FÊTE DU VIN

ANNUAL GALA

Each fall, this wine event brings the FAIS community together and celebrates the rich culture and growing talent of Portland's food and wine community. This year, we hosted a unique, at home wine tasting experience, where guests tasted twelve wines from four different vineyards and via Zoom, connected directly with the winemakers. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from wine purchases come back to FAIS

The Annual Gala is our largest community building and philanthropic event. Our 2021 Virtual Gala celebrated the silver linings from a year of challenges, and reminded us to find the good in every day. With an outpouring of support from our community, we blew past our Special Appeal goal and raised over $230,000 to upgrade the gym floor and build a bouldering wall!

ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund is the School’s most critical fundraising effort. While tuition covers the cost of education, the Annual Fund ensures that our school has the resources necessary to advance our mission by providing rigorous, multilingual academic programs in an environment that promotes appreciation of diverse cultures and experiences. 15 2020-2021 ANNUAL GIVING

ANNUAL GALA - SILVER LININGS Early this spring, over 200 FAIS friends and families gathered virtually for the 2021 FAIS Annual Gala in a spirit of celebration and appreciation for the French American International School. The theme, “Silver Linings,” highlighted the bright edges of a challenging year and the astonishing resilience of our global community. With a focus on community connection, the FAIS Virtual Gala was designed to help guests experience something as close to an in-person event as possible. Everything from a guest appearance by “Teacher Dave” during a pre-show social hour, to a specially curated “Experience Package,” with dinner, wine, and special treats to help guests engage during the live broadcast, provided opportunities for guests to feel a part of the action. The sold-out Experience Package included a three-course meal by ChefStable as well as extra gifts like a “silver linings jar,” Poisson d’Avril chocolates, and a seed packet. Each element tied in to a live treasure hunt on campus, hosted by Matt Birchard, FAIS parent and trustee, and auctioneer Alix Zimmermann, from Artisan Auctions. Families bid on art projects and live auction packages, entered the raffle to win free after-school care, and raised those virtual paddles high, raising over $300,000 for Financial Aid and the Special Appeal!

SPECIAL APPEAL DONORS At the heart of our school is the FAIS gym, a space for community, activity and inspiration. Built in 1998 as part of the administration building, the school gym serves a central role on our campus. From games of Ahhh! to graduation ceremonies, this space is host to our students, families, and guests on a daily basis. For over 20 years, this space has served our community. With the generous support of our community for the Special Appeal during the Annual Gala, we have been able to invest in this space to make the necessary (and exciting) improvements that will bring the space and our extracurricular programs to the next level. The goal for this year’s Special Appeal was $150,000, to replace the gym floor, build a bouldering wall, and bring in new bleachers. Our incredible community flew plast that goal and raised over $230,000!
