I

t is hard to believe the Holiday Season is upon us again. This time of year is almost like a love, hate relationship because we love what it represents; the time we spend with family and friends, traditions we carry on, new ones we start, and the gift giving and receiving. However, on the other hand we dread the stress that comes with all the planning and festivities for the holidays. All the time we spend shopping, traveling, getting our house ready for holiday get togethers, preparing a menu and cooking truly wears us down. Even as we are running ourselves crazy, it is important to take time to relax and reduce stress the best way that works for each of us. As mentioned in our article on page 10, stress does and will take a toll on our bodies from the inside and out if you do not find an outlet to reduce your stress level. The New Year is the perfect time of year to wipe your slate clean, start fresh, start over and put the past behind you. Whether you have started or thinking of starting your own business, changing jobs, careers or going back to school, like so many women mentioned in this issue, the New Year is a great time to dive into it. Since the downfall of the economy, women are trying to reinvent themselves individually but also to help support the family financially. The New Year is the perfect time to do so. Find what you love, find your niche like Fabulous 40rties Magazine did and run with it. The same advice applies to your health. Forget about the past 5-6 months, they are gone and nothing can be done to change them, but you can change your health from this day forward. Make those doctor appointments you have been putting off, get those checkups that are well over due and make this a priority for the New Year. Being and staying healthy is the most important aspect of life…without your health everything else suffers. Make it a point to start an exercise program. It does not have to be joining a gym; go outside for a brisk walk, take dance classes, try yoga, Pilates and even the newest fitness trend Kangoo Jumps as seen on page 13. It is not what you do; it’s that you are doing it! Exercise is not only for individuals who are trying to lose weight but for everyone who would like to be healthy, feel great, look great and have more energy to do all the 100 chores or errands we put on our list every week. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the Holiday Season with your family and friends! The New Year is upon us for the start of great things to come! Wishing you good health and happiness in the New Year,

L

ast year, yes I said “last year”, I came across a book review in a National publication about “A Simple Act of Gratitude” by John Kralik. I enjoyed the review and thought, “This sounds like a great book”. Shortly after that, while out shopping, much to my surprise I spotted the book on the shelf. I purchased the book, headed home and I excitedly cuddled up on the couch with my new book. It was a very easy, interesting and enlightening book. While reading the book all I could think about was what a great idea the author had and that I wanted to do it too. I might even get my children involved and write together as a family. The book is about the author who is a middle aged man struggling through each day while his law firm was failing, was 40 lbs overweight, just gone through a 2nd divorce, girlfriend just broke up with him, and his relationship with his children had grown distant. Everything in his life seemed to be falling apart until the day he received a simple, beautiful, thank you from his ex-girlfriend. From that day forward he vowed to write a thank you note for each of the 365 days in the year. He knew it would be a big undertaking but he was pressed on completing this goal. Who knows…maybe this could be the start of something great that travels around the world. If he sends 365 thank you notes, and those people send 365 thank you notes and so on, think about all the lives that may be affected. What a great concept! Shortly into this project, he noticed his life was changing in positive ways. Good things were happening to him; his relationships were improving, money he thought was long lost started showing up in his mailbox, he started exercising and was feeling great. What I loved so much about the book is how such a small and simple act of gratitude can change the course of someone’s day, make a person feel special and appreciated if only for 10 minutes. Who doesn’t love to hear or read kind words written to or about them? We are all so busy and preoccupied, we forget to take 10 seconds to say hello, wave to our neighbors as we drive by, hold the door for someone, or write a simple Thank You note. Think about the people in your life that has done something nice, gone out of their way, or impacted your life that you can be thanking today…even someone from as far back as an Elementary School teacher. Just think how happy and pleasantly surprised the recipient will be, especially if many years have gone by. Make this yours and your family’s New Years Resolution. As parents we lead by example, and what a great example this would be to sit with our children everyday and write out that one thank you note to that special someone. P

alm Beach is one of the greatest cities in the world, and is especially fun for singles looking to meet someone! It was recently ranked the #6 in Travel + Leisure’s study on America’s Best Cities For Singles, and is known for its attractive and stylish residents. Being single during the holidays can be somewhat lonely and somewhat depressing. While the holidays should be a fun time spent with friends and family, many women find themselves opting out on holiday occasions. Single women should make the most out of their holiday and not let their relationship status bring them down! Say yes to everything! This is the time to get out there. The holidays are filled with parties, happy hours, and people out looking to spread some cheer. Make a promise to yourself to say yes to every invitation you receive - you never know who you could meet! Reinvigorate There is an energy that exists over the holiday season and it is almost electric! Embrace that energy to get in your best flirting mentality ever. Flirting and dating with confidence is hotter than any little black dress. If you are enjoying the holidays, embracing the time you have with friends and family, and loving life - your confidence will soar! Get your flirt on Take that reinvigorated confidence to get flirty! Take chances you normally wouldn’t with anyone that catches your eye at that party. Keep it in check The holidays are full of free-flowing libations, but if you aren’t home with your siblings and parents, don’t overdo it on the eggnog. No more than 1 drink an hour. Stay single! Now I am not saying don’t date or meet people, but starting a relationship in November or December is tough! There are so many possible stressors, like “Do I get him a present already?”, “Why didn’t she invite me to her holiday party?”, “I just want to hang out with my family, but I’m not ready to introducer her to them yet”. Fly solo until the New Year or be sure to keep it light through the season and your expectations in check.

Celebrating your

Planning a unique way to enjoy your anniversary or Valentine’s Day without breaking the bank can be challenging, especially when you’ve been together for a number of years. Consider these six ideas and remember that at the end of the day, it’s all about recognizing the milestone and recommitting to one another. Laugh There are few activities as fun as laughing, so schedule some funny time on your anniversary by purchasing tickets to a local comedy club. Be adventurous Getting outside your comfort zone might be just the thing to re-energize your relationship. Daily deals abound for adventurous activities like skydiving, hang gliding and even race car driving. Make it a group thing Who says your anniversary celebration should be limited to just the two of you? Invite friends or family to join you in this celebration. Reminiscing about your big day through your friends’ memories can make for an especially memorable anniversary. Get pampered A massage and Zen music isn’t just for a ladies day out; men enjoy the occasional massage and pamper session, too. If this is up your alley, book a day at your local spa for a couples’ massage. Take the 30-day sex challenge Agree with your spouse/partner to have sexual relations every day for 30 days. Be creative, use your imagination, think outside the box, as intercourse isn’t the only form of sex. Reconnect with your partner on a new level while having fun. How to

Keep Love Alive

– at any age

BY Dr. Virginia Crist, Ph.D.

W

hy does romantic love so often end in disappointment? Disenchantment? Because the initial choice in partner is unsuitable. Because of doubts and insecurities. Because of unrealistic expectations. Because of ineffective communication and lack knowledge. Or conflicts of living together, and I could go on ... Sometimes a woman or a man “require” that the relationship fail – one or the other or both have a selfconcept that contains an injunction such as “You are not to be happy, or You are not to be successful at love.” There are many reasons why relationships fail, but it is more important to discuss how to succeed at love. If all you want to do is be and remain who you are, then don’t fall in love, because love will transform every cell and fiber of your being. I can’t promise you that you’ll be happy every moment and that everything will always go your way… (if they do, tell me your secret) but I do promise you a joy and fulfillment that you do not want to miss. I believe “It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all!” IT’S VERY TRUE! Do it! Take the risk! Be vulnerable! Don’t miss out on love! Be affectionate with one another. Oh, the sweet nurturance of touch. It’s like magic! Sidney Jourard observed touch frequencies between people in ordinary conversation in coffee shops in Paris and in the United States. In Paris, people touched each other 110 times per hour. In the United States, twice. We live in a touched starved society. I encourage you to hold hands, hug, snuggle; feel close to the one you love. Do you affirm your partner? How do you affirm your

partner? Do you compare your partner to others? Do you judge your partner or yourself? How do you feel about yourself? Do you feel attractive? Are you tired or under stress? Are you full of energy? Do you handle most situations well or do you allow them to continue to bother you? Do you feel close, or withdrawn and distant from your partner? Do you have any sexy thoughts of your partner? Do you think of your partner in a loving way? If you have fallen “out of love,” make a commitment to “fall in love again” with your partner. It certainly can be done. All I need are two motivated and willing partners, and there’s nothing more exciting than being in love! P.S. You must also make alone time for yourself. You need time to rejuvenate, so that you can come back to your partner refreshed, not depleted. So I ask you to consider this loaded, very big selfinventory question: “How would YOU like to be married to YOU?” And I close with my favorite quote: “There is only one happiness in life ~ to love and be loved.” George Sand

Holiday Food Etiquette 911 is not an option!

Anxiety

By Sherry Thomas, Palm Beach Etiquette

H

olidays are a wonderful, exciting excuse to cook, entertain and socialize with co-workers, family, and friends. But . . . there’s nothing worse than watching a guest’s face contort and go pale in horror over something that you’ve placed before them – a dish that probably does not rate too high on their “favorites” list (think anything with liver) or a food that may send them into anaphylactic shock (think shrimp). And let’s face it, the whole idea of a party and the holidays is to be festive and eat like a glutton while being surrounded by happy guests. Food is a key component and takes center stage.

Y

ou know it is that time of year. People all over the world are planning how to celebrate with friends and loved ones. Invariably, this usually includes wine…and the anxiety that comes with it. So, to make you a holiday super-host, here are a few of our favorite wines, and the reasons why they are perfect for entertaining. The spices used in holiday fare range from the sweet (cinnamon) to the savory (rosemary).

Therefore, we suggest: Riesling: This wine is known largely for sweetness, but it is the

sweet balanced with acidity that makes for the right choice. A German Kabinett (early picked) or Alsatian Riesling will provide crisp fruitiness and refreshing balance to your flavorful meal.

Before planning your dinners or passed hors d’oeuvres events, ask your guests to alert you of any allergies they may have and to give you an idea of foods that do not “inspire” them. You may even add a note on your printed invitations (if any of your events warrant them) asking for this feedback. It is crucial to learn the severity of the allergy and its parameters. Only a guest can provide this information. If any items are being catered, it falls upon your shoulders to impart this information to the vendor. Just using the same allergen cooking vessel, without properly cleansing, can spell trouble.

Rhone Reds: Wines made from Syrah, Grenache and Mourve-

Plan your menu with variety in mind. If your event is buffet style, this makes it easier to provide something for everyone, but here again, if there is a peanut allergy, sometimes, its fumes alone can set off a reaction. Peanuts of any sort, with any traces, are not a good idea.

Les Trois Couronnes Cotes du Rhone (France): $10.99

How about gluten? Gluten free diets are all the rage now, but in the spirit of not wanting to be perceived as a royal pain, many guests do not burden the host with this information; thus, it is overlooked. Another one? Kosher. Then there’s vegetarian and vegan. As a host, it is important to know these things. In short, there are a couple of ways to handle allergies, food likes and specialty diets. Just ask. I normally pose this question: “Is there anything food wise that you don’t care for or are there any allergies that you or anyone in your family have?” The guest is normally delighted that someone would award him/her that much consideration. Second, add it onto your printed invitation and solicit the information. The role of the host is to make sure that guests are happy and ah hum . . . healthy!

dre offer a wide range of flavors that will match up well with the hearty nature of the food. A good Cotes du Rhone (a basic blend of the three grapes) is cost effective and really tasty. There are also good Domestic blends that are worth considering.

Seven Hills Riesling 2010: $12.99

Light straw yellow in color, the nose opens with fresh Granny Smith apple, lime skin, and cardamom. The palate is lightly citrus-sweet up front, moving to a crisp, mineral finish. 90pts – Wine Advocate

The color is dark, shiny, raspberry jam red. The nose is cherry, curry spice, a touch of pepper and a few sprigs of mint. There is fresh, bright fruit upfront, cherries and raspberries and then the spice and pepper kicks in. (BP)

Messenger “Red Wine Number Two” (California): $17.99

Art+Farm layered vineyards, varietals and vintages of Grenache 60% Mourvedre 19% Syrah 18% Viognier 3% to create a signature wine. Rounded blackberry & cherry flavors are wrapped in sage to delight from nose to finish.

Collaborative Divorce Preserves Cooperation Between Spouses By Hugh Leavell, Ph.D Divorce is hard enough. It’s known to be about the most stressful event you can live through. The traditional way to divorce has been to hire a lawyer to fight with your spouse’s lawyer in a courtroom, trying to persuade a judge to give you the best possible deal and never mind who gets hurt. It’s a battle and the purpose is to beat the other party into submission. Hiring an attorney to fight your battle isn’t cheap, either. The arrival of the mediated divorce some three to four decades ago made the process more humane for those who were truly cooperative and determined to make a fair settlement. Now comes a new method for divorcing called Collaborative Divorce. In this process, parties confer with a collaborative team and negotiate a divorce settlement that suits them. This is all done outside of court except for the final hearing when the judge puts the hammer down on the marriage, officially ending it. All parties, the spouses, their attorneys, a communication facilitator who is usually a mental health professional, along with financial and child specialists as needed all sit down together and negotiate the divorce settlement from soup to nuts. The net result is a divorce achieved without fighting, preserving relationships that may not be ending, only changing. Ending a marriage doesn’t always mean ending a family as the presence of minor children requires continuing cooperation, not to mention financial resources. Collaborative Divorce endeavors to preserve both resources and harmonious relations.

Stress

The Vicious Cycle

By Meroe Rabieifar, PharmD My Community Pharmacy

Although most people view stress as emotional, physical stresses exist. Possible origins of stress include chronic inflammation (as in infections, arthritis, etc.), sugar imbalances (as in cookies!) as well as mental and emotional stress (as in spouses, work, kids, etc.). What is the big deal about stress? Approximately 75% of all chronic physical diseases begin with untreated stress. Prior to disease showing itself, our bodies inform us of its dangerous status with symptoms like sleep distress, depression, hormone imbalances and suppressed immune systems. You may have heard of cortisol, but not sure what it does. Cortisol has been handed a bad rap. Cortisol, a necessary adrenal hormone in our bodies, is an anti-inflammatory hormone. Having low cortisol is a disease that causes many health issues and can be dangerous. Melatonin is released at night to bring us sleep. Cortisol reverses the effects of melatonin, waking us. Throughout the day, the cortisol wears off and melatonin begins its work to bring sleep again. Cortisol is also released in response to stress. An increase in cortisol leads to reduced sleep, which leads to more stress and further reduced sleep – the downward spiral. Increased cortisol leads to weight gain (obesity), increased blood pressure (heart and kidney disease), increased blood sugar (insulin-resistance and diabetes), reduced collagen formation (wrinkles), damaged brain cells in the hippocampus (memory loss), and lowered immune function (infections). Finally, adrenal glands become exhausted which leads to adrenal fatigue – they stop producing cortisol almost entirely – which is perhaps the most dangerous part of this cycle. Adrenal fatigue is characterized by excessive exhaustion, waking from sufficient sleep but not rested, feeling rundown, unhealthy food cravings, slow recovery from illness/injury, poor digestion, low immune function, and many more symptoms. Stressed out about stress? There is hope. It requires effort to change the course of your destiny. There are many high quality supplements, designed by holistic over-the-counter nutraceutical companies, specifically to promote balanced adrenal function. However, without changes in your lifestyle (healthy diet and exercise) and stress management, all the supplements in the world will not take you out of the danger zone. Visit My Community Pharmacy and we will help you get back on the right track to combating your stress. 1050 Gateway Blvd., #101 Boynton Beach, FL 33426 561-200-4245

It’s Time to Work Together... By Dr. Randall Laurich

H

ealthcare approaches are a popular topic in America. Yet even though we are one of the most advanced healthcare systems, we are number 53 in the world in healthcare as determined by the World Health Organization. How can this be? Well, we are in a sickness care model instead of the wellness care model. I’m not going to get into a battle with how we need to change the system, but rather how we can work together for the best intentions of the patients. At The Wellness Experience, we have 9 providers who work together to determine the best team approach for the patient. Just as they discussed in the presidential debates, teamwork is the only way we can create a better system. For the longest time, it was a struggle to create the bridge between the medical model and the natural wellness approach. Through education and an increase in technology that bridge has now been built. At The Wellness Experience, we have found a way to work with the medical community and refer to them when the patient has run out of alternative options. We work with interventional pain management physicians, neurosurgical physicians, orthopedic physicians, and many other doctors who have realized our approach assists their patients in the recovery of their injury. In school, most medical doctors and osteopathic physicians never learn the benefits of a natural approach; however, by postgraduate education and education from chiropractors, acupuncturist, physical therapist, naturopaths, and other alternative care providers, the medical field has opened their arms to these options. Recently, I sat down in a radio interview with Dr. Jace Provo of Sports and Orthopedic Center in Boca Raton, Florida. Dr. Provo specializes in sports and orthopedic medicine, which is a field dealing with nonsurgical treatment of orthopedic injuries. Dr. Provo is an expert in the use of ortho Biologics, such as PRP and prolotherapy and is also a recognized expert in the use of ultrasound in diagnosing orthopedic conditions instead of MRI. Dr. Provo has a long-standing history in professional sports having joined up with the NBA since 1992 and currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer of the National Basketball Association, the WNBA and the NBA Development League.

After he performs his natural injectables, he recommends physical therapy, chiropractic and other modalities to improve the patient’s response time and lasting effects of the injectables. The way we step across the bridge and work together is by finding common ground and realizing we are not competition, but are here to get the best results for patients. The only way we can do that is from a team approach. One thing that most physicians do not speak to their patient about is having them take responsibility for their own care including home care and preventative measures. The team approach does include this, so we must educate patients on taking the steps to help themselves down the road of health. You certainly take your car in for maintenance check-ups. Doesn’t your body deserve a well-needed tune-up also? They are definitely worth the time and effort in preventing further disease or mishaps down the road. At The Wellness Experience, we offer the team approach by incorporating chiropractic, massage therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture, decompression therapy, nutritional counseling, and an esthetician. We use a very gentle chiropractic technique called the proadjuster, an instrument used to detect nerve interference of the spine, and the instrument corrects the spinal misalignments and in the long run corrects the nerve interference. We also use the DRX 9000, a decompression therapy device, used to treat bulging, protruding, herniated and degenerative disks.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Hottest Fitness Trend for 2012 by Lisa Liebman Trainer/President of Just Bounce Inc.

As owner of Just Bounce, a Kangoo Jumps company, I love to help people become fit while enjoying it. Making fitness fun motivates people to work out routinely. Fitness can be a part of your lifestyle and by keeping our bodies in motion, we can be in the best shape of our lives. By putting physical and emotional health first, it allows us to be happy and energetic. My goal is to inspire others to make good choices for their physical and spiritual being while allowing their beautiful souls to shine. Kangoo Jumps is a low-impact, high-intensity workout for women, men and children. It reduces the impact on joints by 80%, correct your posture, burn 20% more calories than traditional running, lose fat faster, and improve endurance dramatically. Kangoo Jumps is fun and provides an immediate state of euphoria. People initially look at Kangoo jumps and fear that they won’t be able to balance, but within less than a minute of training, they are jogging! Kangoo Jumps helps out our lymphatic system that does not have a pump like our hearts. Instead, it relies on our natural movements for circulation. When we don’t move enough, we store excess levels of toxins. The lymphatic system also monitors our Base Metobolic

Rate which is the rate our bodies burn calories. It increases as our lymphatic system works more efficiently. What improvements should you expect with Kangoo Jumps? There will be noticeable improvement in muscle tone and weight management. Once metabolism is reset, we burn calories at a higher rate whether we are exercising or not. Enjoy dinner knowing that your body is burning calories the entire time! My Kangoo Jumps training class, for beginners and consistent trainers, will give a full body workout. When non-active people begin Kangoo Training, their heart rate climbs very rapidly. After a week of use, there is a noticeable, amazing difference. Kangoo Jumps offers relief from neck and back pains, headaches and other pains caused by lack of exercise. I strongly believe in interval training that involves a series of low to high intensity interspersed with an active recovery. This builds cardiovascular strength and is more effective at inducing fat loss than simply training at a moderate intensity. People have noticed my high energy level which I attribute to Kangoo Jumps. Rental and sales are available. Gift certificates are great gifts. New Year’s Resolutions Do you find yourself making New Year’s resolutions each year only to break them within days or a few months? You are not alone! It is a time-tested tradition: Make a resolution on New Year’s Eve to do something life-altering in the coming year. Whether it is to lose a few pounds, meet The One, pay off your credit card balance, be a better friend, whatever your goal is, right now you’re probably feeling motivated and determined to stay on course. Unfortunately, the fact is only 35 percent of New Year’s Resolutions are broken before the end of January and only 23 percent were kept for the entire year. Statistically speaking, that is just slightly more than one person out of five, which means that nearly four out of five people are not sticking to their resolution. Will you be one of these people? What seems to be the problem? Apparently, distraction and being busy doing other things is the main problem. Forty percent of those polled said they have too many things to do to keep their commitment. Another 33 percent said that not fulfilling their resolutions came down to not being committed to the resolutions they made in the first place.

Here are a few tips to help you stick with your resolution throughout the entire year. 1. Focus on one resolution. Putting too many demands on yourself is just setting yourself up for failure. 2. Be specific about the resolution. If you want to lose weight, come up with the number of pounds you want to lose and by what date. Don’t just say eat healthy; start off by adding a healthy snack each day and cutting out one bad snack or drink. If you want to quit smoking, do not try to go cold turkey, cut back 1 or 2 cigarettes a day. Working your resolution into your daily routine slowly is the key to success. 3. Make it a team effort or at least make your friends and family aware of your resolution. This way they can help and encourage you to stick with it and making you accountable for your actions. 4. Commit to it on a piece of paper. Sometimes putting something in writing seems so much more official; like a contract. 5. Finally, let yourself mess up every once in a while but do not drift too far to the other side because you may never go back. Winter 2012 | Fabulous 40rties | 13

Back in the Work By Lisa Goodman

H

“If only there was a business I could start that would allow me flexibility for the family, more money to pay off the bills, and part-time.” hours.”

ow often do we hear these kinds of murmurings? If I had a nickel for every time, my financial worries would certainly be less!

Now, approximately $300 a month is contributed to the household expenses thanks to Heather’s curiosity and her husband’s business’ success. Sometimes opportunity knocks, when you are watching the phone, or when you are out doing what you do best. Sherri, a talented artist, was hired due to crafty eavesdropping. A restaurant owner was chatting about the need to hire an artist. Sherri identified herself as one and their conversation blossomed into a moneymaking venture with her painting murals in his 10 locations.

So how do women get involved, engaged and make an impact? For most, it is born out of need and for others, a real interest. Here are a few stories of women that have made getting back to work, work. Elaine Riba in Coconut Creek, has always been passionate about her photography. It was not just a hobby, but a true talent and skill she improved over the years. After being laid off and then having a 2nd child, Elaine had plenty of opportunity and models to hone her photography. Attending parties, sporting events, and family celebrations, Elaine would always be the one with the camera in front of her face. Friends would approach her about sharing the photos and she finally realized her favorite hobby could become a business.

Picture Mamas was born! Now, Elaine books herself as the photographer to capture any event: Birthday parties for adults and children, kids’ sports, baby showers, school activities and more. For a fee, she attends events, takes casual and posed shots, and delivers a CD with dozens of captured moments. One of her latest, bestselling services is her photo books designed to meet customers’ requests. Perfect for sign-in books at catered events, memory books for milestones and family celebrations, and gifts, Elaine does the work that make many of us break into a sweat. Her latest addition includes her line of photo cards for “Save the Date”, thank you notes and holiday cards. The income from Elaine’s business contributes to her family’s groceries, gift giving, and savings. Managing a household with 4 children, Heather Loftis was busy enough without a full-time job. Due to injuries from an accident, she was not able to find work that accommodated her pain and limitations. For months, Heather watched as her husband disposed of discarded equipment and units from his air conditioning and refrigeration business. She noticed that these materials quickly disappeared from the trash pile and realized that there must be value in them. On a whim, she gathered the items and took them to a nearby scrap metal recycling facility.

F

inding that ideal position takes some thought. Being able to determine what your motivation is will ultimately point you down an appropriate path. When health insurance was a needed benefit for our family, I took a part-time position at Starbucks. Not only did I receive full benefits, but also I only worked a minimum of 20 hours per week. That left time for taking care of household obligations and being around for the children. Other women have returned to the work force based on their goals. Some are now full-time teachers while others choose to be substitute teachers for extra income. There are women who have returned to the work force thanks to family businesses or neighbors searching for part-time, dependable help. For only a few hours each day, their earnings contribute to the month’s electric bill, cell phones, vacation savings and more. Whether you are searching for your next career stop or ramping up a unique business, work does not have to be a chore, but a blend of things you love and love doing. Open your mind to possibilities and perhaps it will also increase your bank account along the way.

During the winter months, many people have dry, dull or brittle hair. The tips below will help you keep your hair healthier during winter months.

Do not shampoo your hair too often. One of the most common mistakes people make is shampooing their hair too often. In cold weather, both the hair and scalp dry out more easily.

Use the right type of products. The type of products you use on your hair will make a big difference in the overall health of your hair. Ask your hair stylist which type of product is best for your hair type.

Dealing with Static. An easy way to combat static is to spray a small amount of hair spray on your hairbrush when you are done styling and brush it through from top to bottom.

Do not overuse your hairdryer. Overusing your hairdryer

will contribute to dry damaged hair. Try to blow dry your hair as little as possible. When you use your hairdryer, try using the ‘cool’ setting. Drying your hair with cool air may take a little longer but it will do less damage to your hair.

Sue’s cut

Sue came in with grey roots, brassy ends, frizzy, dry and unmanageable curly hair. Colleen wanted to complement her natural tones by cooling off her color a bit with the already orangey-brassy tones in her hair. Colleen used a natural permanent color on her roots to cover her greys, and a glaze on the mid-shaft to ends, because Colleen feels that you should never pull permanent color through the ends. The glaze gives lots of shine and fills in the dry cuticle of hair, which Sue needed. Next, Colleen put in a few foils of highlight to keep the contrast in her hair. She then toned her hair to give the blonde a richer more natural color. Sue didn’t want to lose much of her length so Colleen shaped up the ends and blended the layers together so Sue would have the option of wearing a curly or smooth, sleek look. What do you want the readers to know about you?

I received my license to practice massage therapy in January 1991 and spent my first few years in medical practices, resort spas, salons and an extensive house call business. I became a massage therapy teacher (Continuing Educational Provider) in January 2001 when my passion for the traditional Hot Stone Massage inspired me to author my own massage protocol, “Lane Stone Therapy”. After being approved by The Board of Massage, I enjoyed teaching hundreds of students locally and many others in resort spas all over the country. I am devoted to my work every day and feel inspired and alive when I am at The Lane Spa. The spa has weathered many a storm in the business world but we steadily continue to increase our client base. We strive to continue to serve our new and returning clients with dedication and by using the latest and most innovative treatments that the spa industry has to offer.

When did The Lane Spa open? OR How has The Lane Spa evolved over the years?

The Lane Spa opened its doors September 1995 as Lane Massage Therapy with the help of a modest S.B.A. loan and support from family and friends. With limited capital and no business experience, I relied on God’s grace and direction, the love for my work, my dedication to the spa industry, and my staff to make ends meet. In the past 18 years, the spa has grown from 1,000 sq. ft. to 3,500 sq. ft., from 4 to 34 professional and licensed staff members. Now we offer many different massage modalities, skincare, waxing, nail care, a private hair suite and much more.

With today’s economic climate, how do you maintain a successful business?

Aside from staying true to our love of massage therapy, we strive to offer a great value to our clients. All of our massages, facials and pedicures are a full 60 minutes – not 50 minutes like others. We stay current with our marketing by using our database to communicate regularly with our clients, offering monthly specials, and birthday coupons. By keeping our pricing reasonable, the local market can easily afford frequent visits to the spa. Plus, anyone can take advantage of our monthly special by visiting the website.

Do you have any specials for Fabulous 40rties readers?

Going Green

Make Sense to You? Do you think it is too expensive?

Are you overwhelmed with where to start?

We have discovered an eco-friendly brand that is both highly effective and affordable!

Humans have been drinking and thriving on Milk (in its raw form) for thousands of years. In 1944, raw milk became illegal for human consumption due to a media smear campaign, creating fear in support of the pasteurization industry. In 1993, the FDA approved Monsanto’s artificial hormone (rBGH) or (rbST), marketed as Posilac. Injected into dairy cows to produce 5% more milk, side effects include mastitis, reproductive dysfunction, clinical lameness, and shorter lifespan. As a result, cows are treated with antibiotics. 80% of all antibiotics are used to treat the ill health of factory farmed animals. Milk from rBGH/rBST treated cows contains antibiotics, hormones, puss, and higher levels of hormone insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), proven to cause prostate and breast cancers. Plus, cows are fed Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) feed. Research proves the danger to cows and humans, so how could that milk be healthy? Alternatives for your cereal? Try organic milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. I personally do not recommend soy or rice milk. Rice milk is a container of sugar and soy, even if it is organic, creates elevated phytoestrogens levels, that can have adverse health effects.

Traditions T

hose little rituals passed down from generation to generation that are shared with your family. They create a lifetime of memories to fill our hearts with love and happiness!

Here are a few shared by our friends and family... •

Every fall we go apple picking then we use the apples during the Jewish Holidays. We make delicious pies and everyone gathers in the kitchen to help with the preparation and the baking. The night before a new school year begins we all snuggle on the couch and read the book The Kissing Hand. Each year right before Christmas, I ask my children to go through their toys and pick out 10 items to give away to a local charity. It’s nice to teach the gift of Giving! Write a letter to your child each month telling them their accomplishments, trials and tribulations and mail it to your house addressed to them. Give them all of the special letters when they graduate High School. Once a week we have movie night at our house. One of the children picks the movie they want to watch, we make popcorn, grab a couple blankets and snuggle on the couch together. Each of my children get to choose their favorite Birthday dinner that we cook at home. Everyone has to be present to eat dinner together as a family. That’s the best gift! We have a special “Happy Birthday” cake plate that we use only when it is one of our birthdays. Every night at the dinner table we take turns telling what our favorite part of the day was and then the worst part of the day. You will be surprised that what seems trivial to grownups, is special and important to our children. One day on the weekend we let our kids eat junk food from morning to night. By the end of that day, they are so sick of it they say they don’t ever want to eat that junk again. Each year one of our children has the honor of putting the star on the top of the Christmas tree. We have this tradition called “ten minutes”. It’s hard being a single mom and giving each child the attention they need, so we developed this bedtime activity to ensure I don’t miss the little things. Right before bed I go into each of their rooms, sit with them and listen to whatever they want to discuss for 10 minutes. It doesn’t sound like much but I get to hear a lot without the other child interrupting or me being distracted.

Someone has to create family traditions...why not let it be you!!

AND N DOW 0! 0 0 1 ME by Chris Seal Boot Camp Dean

hen you hear the term “Boot Camp”, you might think of the days and nights being kept up by motivated drill instructors. In this case, Boot Camp is the term used to describe the teaching style of a local fathering program called Boot Camp for New Dads® (aka Daddy Boot Camp®). Since 2003, the local North Palm Beach Boot Camp for New Dads has been equipping men to become involved with their infants, support their partners in all areas, and be confident in their new role as father. During each three hour class, a volunteer coach navigates his way through topics such as new mom challenges, caring for a new baby, shaken baby syndrome, and postpartum concerns. In addition to these topics, time is allocated for a previous graduate of the class to bring in his newborn baby and discuss what he has learned throughout those first few months on fatherhood. With the help of the veteran father, the class participants are also afforded the opportunity to hold the newborn baby, change diapers, and master the art known as swaddling. Although there are no actual push-ups prescribed during this “Boot Camp”, these graduates do leave the class feeling more confident in their newly acquired knowledge of childcare and ready to tackle the challenges they may encounter throughout the first few months of fatherhood. With the new year approaching, the North Palm Beach Boot Camp for New Dads will have had the pleasure of reaching 1000 soon-to-be dads! That’s 1000 families that otherwise would have possibly gone into this amazing process known as parenting blindly. For the 1000 fathers touched by this program, the coaches and I would like to say thank you for allowing us into your lives and the opportunity to make a difference...For the men out there who are yet to become fathers, we look forward to sharing our knowledge and experiences with you.

For more information about this program, call Bob Schuemann at 561-622-4913 or visit: http://www.gatheringpb.com

BE A MENTOR

W

ould you like to help a local teen learn how to write in cursive? Or teach one of our teen girls to become more “ladylike”? These are examples of the help two hundred of our teen Club members, age 12 and up, are asking for. BGCPBC is beginning a new site-based mentoring program funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Mentoring appointments will all be held in Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, Riviera Beach and Belle Glade. Mentors are asked to make a commitment to one hour each week for one year to develop an ongoing relationship of learning, dialog, and challenge with one (or a small group) of our BGC teens. Many of our teenage Club members come from environments in which positive role models are scarce and knowledge of career opportunities is limited. A mentor’s personal attention and guidance can have a powerful effect on the choices these children make for the rest of their lives. For more information on our mentoring program, to schedule a club tour or to schedule a mentoring presentation please contact: Lauren Mustelier, Mentor Coordinator, (561) 846-2825 (cell) or by email at lmustelier@bgcpbc.org.

Know the rating of the video games your child plays (see below). Do not install video game equipment in your child’s bedroom. Set limits on how often and how long your child is allowed to play video games. Monitor all of your child’s media consumption -- video games, television, movies and Internet. Supervise your child’s Internet use -- there are now many “video games” available for playing online. Share with other parents information about certain games or ideas for helping each other in parenting. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) The ESRB is a self-regulatory body established in 1994 by the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA). The major video game manufacturers created this board after concerned groups applied pressure over the content of video games. Similar to the movie industry’s rating system, all major game companies now submit their new products for rating to specially trained raters at the ESRB. The ESRB rates over 1,000 games per year.

T

he ESRB looks at a number of factors when rating games. In particular, it considers the amount of violence, sex, controversial language and substance abuse found in a game. Based on its developed guidelines, the ESRB then gives an age recommendation and content descriptor to each game submitted. The following are the rating symbols currently in use, according to the ESRB Web site. Early Childhood (EC): Content should be suitable for children 3 years and older and contain no objectionable material. Everyone (E): Content suitable for persons ages 6 and older. The game may contain minimal violence and some “comic mischief.” Teen (T): Content suitable for persons ages 13 and older. Content is more violent than (E) rating and contains mild or strong language, and/or suggestive themes. Mature (M): Content suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Content definitely has more mature sexual themes, intense violence and stronger language. Adults Only (AO): Content suitable only for adults and may contain graphic sex and/or violence. Adult Only products are not intended for persons under the age of 18. Rating Pending (RP): Game has been submitted to the ESRB and is awaiting a final rating.

CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY

The Toby Center, Divorce, and You By Mark D. Roseman, MBA, Ph.D., Executive Director

D

eena and Nina created Fabulous 40rties to be “a place where women can share experiences and know we are never alone in what we face.” During divorce, who is there to help? What does one need? And, at what cost? Information, education, support, and guidance. Dr. Mark Roseman, a divorced father and founder of the Toby Center for Family Transitions in Delray says “most of the research shows that clarity and understanding reduces animosity and fear accompanying this family change.” Studying medical modalities, Roseman discovered that separated parents and children thrive when they can access appropriate and multiple services. The Toby Center is based on such a model and is the first to offer a holistic array of services including family mediation, supervised visitation, counseling, legal document preparation, support groups, and coaching. All services are based on income. Services are available in both Palm Beach County and Broward. South Florida Author and Divorce Coach, Rosalind Sedacca, contributing writer for the Huffington Post online and David L. Levy, Esq., of DC and founder of the Children’s Rights Council and father of joint custody both sit on the Center’s Advisory Board. The Center Board consists of therapists, stress management and legal service representatives who give grounding to the mission, to improve positive outcomes for children when parents choose to separate. Think about ‘going it alone’ when a tragedy occurs. For each and every one of us, then, these are unplanned events which, in order to move forward, we must maneuver, we must transition. For our sake, our children’s sake, for our future. Is ‘going it alone practical’? If you prefer to be less anxious, more hopeful, confident, then the Toby Center may offer you that road map. Roseman and staff are available for public speaking and divorce recovery workshops. The Toby Center for Family Transitions 4731 W. One Child, One Horse, One Day at a Time.

“Live my life for a day.” The only predictable thing - my parents will drink and fight. Sometimes I hide in the closet with my sister and a flashlight to get away from the screaming and finish my homework. I hope the police aren’t called again because if the money goes to bail then the electric bill won’t get paid. I can’t worry about that now. I have to get my little sister fed so when mom gets home she won’t be mad. Fourteen shouldn’t be this hard. I never invite any friends over because I don’t know what we’ll walk into. I know mom loves me, but she says she just can’t stop drinking. She’s an alcoholic. Not everyone believes this; but it’s a real disease. And it takes the whole family hostage.

L

uckily, there is a place I can go to get away from all of this called Horses Healing Hearts. Every Saturday I go to be with kids like me, volunteers, and most importantly HORSES! It seems like the horses understand me instantly. It’s like a magical world, I’m able to be myself with no secrets, and I’m completely accepted – it’s a safe place. I’ve met adult volunteers who grew up just like me. One shared a great way to deal with stress when I feel like I’m going to lose it. I think I have a better chance to have a great life now. If she did it, I can too.”- Anonymous past participant. Jumping for Kids By Annie Bissoondial

Children’s emotions are pure, simple and straight from the heart!

M

y 10-year-old nephew, Matthew, wrote this for his current event report in NY. “On March 7, 2012, a new record was set in the Guinness World Record book for jumping rope. My aunt Annie Bissoondial, who lives in Florida, beat the record of 10,000 skips by skipping 11,527 times. She jumped rope for an hour to beat this record. My aunt Annie’s skipping skills and techniques were amazing and impressive. Aunt Annie did the event to raise $10,000 for the Barr Foundation, which provides prostheses and assistance for amputees. Two years ago, on March 7th, 2010, Aunt Annie was in a car crash. She had serious injuries to her left hand. She lost her thumb, and she had to have surgery to save her index finger from being amputated. Aunt Annie also had to go through physical therapy for months. However, now that she has achieved her goal, she can think of the date March 7th in a joyful way. Aunt Annie shows us all that you can take something terrible, and make it into something positive.” wo little boys, 9-year-old Cole, and 8-year-old Ethan, of Boca Raton saw my Guinness World Record video and watched it a few times while pretending to jump without a jump rope. They told their mom that because of my video, they would like her to buy them the Guinness World Record Book. Now, because of Matthew, Cole, and Ethan, I am the president and founder of my non-profit foundation, Jumping for Kids, Inc. Established in June 2012, Jumping for Kids (website: jumpingforkids.org) is my way of giving back to the community. Also, approximately 17% or 12.5 million (aged 2-19 years) of children and adolescents are obese, and since 1980 that number has almost tripled. I want to address the issue of obesity by introducing, teaching, and providing jump ropes to all children so they can stay fit and healthy. I want kids to improve their self-confidence, and have a positive outlook on life. With time, I also plan to provide jump rope assistance to children who cannot afford sneakers and prosthetic help to children with missing limbs.

T

As a little girl, jumping rope or skipping began as a fun recreational activity and now it is my daily workout before I start my day. It is known around the world and enjoyed primarily by young children, especially girls. There are different views of jumping rope; boys in elementary schools may view it as something only girls do. A coach or personal fitness trainer may view it as a circuit training workout and a tool to help athletes improve their sports performance, etc. A jump rope takes only a few square feet of space and an adequate jumping surface which can be used anywhere, and provides the greatest fitness in the least amount of time; e.g. 10 minutes of jumping rope at 120 turns a min-ute is equal to 30 minutes of jogging, 12 minutes of swimming, 1 mile of running in 12 minutes, 2 sets of tennis, etc. Also, 10 minutes of jumping rope burns 120 calories for a 150lbs person. ow, March 7, 2010 has been replaced with March 7, 2012, my Guinness World Record (GWR); the greatest day of my life. I’ve learned that sometimes even the bad things in our lives can influence us to work for the goodness of others. The experience I have gained in the last two years is priceless. I was able to regain my self-confidence and beat depression. It made me realize that I can apply these events in my life to my volunteer time. I want to show children how much fun it can be to jump rope and at the same time the physical and mental benefits that come from it. I want to use my GWR as a motivational tool to show that anything is possible, and that one can do amazing things only if one works hard and never gives up. In the end, there is always a purpose for everyone.

N

Please support Jumping for Kids (http://www. jumpingforkids.org); your generous contributions or donated ropes will go towards jump ropes and shoes for kids to help children improve their health.

PETS

Pets are donors too! Did you know that your pet can help, too? When your pet donates to a pet blood bank, he’ll help treat animals in desperate need of blood, like accident victims, pets who need transfusions because they are anemic, have a clotting problem , have hemophilia, or have acute blood loss (cancer, or internal bleeding). Each blood donor candidate is screened for numerous infectious diseases, hemoglobin levels, and metabolic screens, so this is a great way of getting “free” routine screening for your pet! Cats can have only cat blood, and dogs can have only dog blood, but it must also be the right type of blood. There are eight different canine blood types but felines have type A or B blood. If your kitty is type B, your local pet blood bank will be very grateful for a donation. The procedure itself is safe and painless and most dogs lie quietly while getting a lot of TLC during the donation process, but your cat may need to be sedated. Depending on your pet’s size and general health, he can donate up to four times a year. The perfect dog blood donor is: • 1 to 7 years of age • Good temperament (like greyhounds and retrievers) • More than 50 pounds (in lean body weight) • Healthy, current on vaccines and not on any medication • Never received a transfusion before The perfect cat blood donor is: • 2 to 7 years of age • Healthy, current on vaccines and not on any medication • More than 10 pounds (in lean body weight) • Been tested and does not have Feline leukemia or feline immunodeficiency virus • Never been previously bred and Never been previously transfused Call your local veterinary specialty clinic to see if your pet is a good candidate for donating blood. Your pet will help save a life! Sources: http://www.Petmd.com and http://www.Petadvisor.com

Now Available

Harrisons’ Pet Products announces the availability of a powerful formulation of Booster,® a dietary supplement that contains high EPA (precursors to DHA) amounts of omega-3 fatty acids for all animals. All the benefits of Booster® that pet owners have come to appreciate (a whole food source of vitamins, precursors and other nutrients as well as providing broad antimicrobial activity) are further enhanced with the addition of a proprietary blend of perilla seed oil to increase the omega-3 levels to 2400 mg per tablespoon or over 16%. Animal nutritionists have found balance is the key when it comes to omega fatty acids. Most commercial animal diets contain a ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids that is too high for sustained health. Use Omega-3 Booster orally for: • Allergies • Atopic dermatitis • Lick granulomas and non-healing wounds • Self-mutilation disorders • Chronic upper respiratory disorders • Omega 3 and/or vitamin A deficiencies Omega-3 Booster is safe and effective for all species (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and other exotic animals). It is available in convenient 1-ounce, 4-ounce and 16-ounce glass jars.

The Palm Beaches

ave you noticed how many beautiful people there are in West Palm Beach lately? If you’ve been seeing more beauty than ever before, you’re not seeing things; it’s the result of The Beauty Beast.com.

Here’s how it works:

The Beauty Beast is Palm Beach County’s hottest website for online deals for all things beauty. It helps residents find incredible savings to the most exclusive salons, spas, fitness centers and more, including The Nspa at the Delray Beach Marriot Resort, D. Laudati Master Colorist, Cosmo & Company and many more. Actually, there are over 100 beauty and wellness businesses to date, with more jumping onboard every day.

To become a member, consumers can sign up for free online. Once registered, they can view deals and buy and print out “Savage Saver” vouchers for select treatments and services at their favorite beauty and wellness establishments. The Beauty Beast.com is the brain child of owners and real-life couple, Richard Ashton and Dawn Dallin. After nearly two years in the making, the two have recently launched the site. Born out of the economic downturn, Dawn and Rich wanted a way to provide top notch treatments and services to those struggling to make ends meet. They realized that people needed a way to inexpensively maintain their appearance in order to find jobs or go on interviews, or just simply treat themselves with a little pampering to help them make it through hard times.

“No matter what the economic times may be,” says owner Dawn Dallin, “women are always going to find a way to afford their beauty necessities, and we wanted to find a away to help them do just that. We are extremely excited to help them find the treatments and services they love for less, while breathing new life into the beauty and wellness industry.” Not only does the site benefit its members, but it’s designed to drive customers directly to the doors of local beauty businesses. It helps business owners increase exposure and promote their businesses without all the expenses associated with traditional advertising.

“It’s always been my vision to bring community back to Palm Beach County,” says owner Richard Ashton, “with all the big brand name businesses in our area, too many of us have forgotten about the small business owners. We are trying to change that.” To become a member and start saving at all the places you love, visit thebeautybeast.com and register today.

Fabulous Forties By Maria Botwin AND FRIENDS

I

just celebrated my twentieth wedding anniversary. I know I’m lucky because I married my best friend. Not that it has always been easy, but we truly put our best intentions for each other first. We live together, raise kids together and work all day together. Believe me, I know I’m blessed. At my age (fortysomething), I know that real true friends are hard to come by. Any woman, I can’t speak for men, who has had her heart broken by a best woman friend will know what I mean. The tabloids and magazines call it “toxic” friendships. I call is “tired” friendships. In his book, Seat of the Soul, Gary Zukav philosophized that we all exist in a person’s life to fulfill a purpose for each other. After that, we can cut loose. If it was only that easy. I mean, who knows what the purpose is and when will it happen? Last year, a friend of mine suffered a double brain aneurysm. Luckily, she was discovered and rescued by three of her friends. Today, she and one of those women have parted ways. Interesting thought Mr. Zukav… My friend once told me that friendships expire, like a gallon of milk. They just turn downright sour. Whatever the case, once we reach our forties, we really don’t have time for people that only take, make us feel like crap and/or judge us. A psychiatrist acquaintance of mine (really he was just an acquaintance!) offered me some great advice in figuring out if a friend is worth having in my life. At the time, I had one of those toxic/tiresome friends. He said to spend one week without contacting her or taking her calls. If at the end of one week, I felt liberated and happy; well, there’s your answer. It has been over ten years and I have not spoken to her. Neither has she made an attempt to contact me. I sometimes wonder if the separation was bilateral. Perhaps I was just as toxic/tiresome to her. “Friendship is an undervalued resource. The consistent message of these studies is that friends make your life better,” reports Karen A. Roberto, director of the center for gerontology at Virginia Tech. We need friends and as fabulous women in our forties that have careers, run households, raise kids, care for our parents and pets we know how important it is to have a network. We also know how important it is to be the shoulder to cry on, to rely on and to just have fun with. I think, though, that in our forties, we get better at weeding out the people that don’t enhance our life. Plus, we stop feeling guilty about doing so. It is just another distinction that makes us fabulous! Winter 2012 | Fabulous 40rties | 33
