FRIENDS OF THE CONDELLAS had visited Iceland, and their account and photographs of the country’s splendor provided the spark that led Vince Condella and his wife to arrange their own visit. The Condellas had never been to Iceland prior to this trip, and elected to join a weeklong journey led by tour company Abercrombie & Kent. The Iceland exploration began in the capital city of Reykjavik and then ventured through western and southern Iceland. Condella was impressed by many aspects of this lovely northern island country, citing many of the notable and memorable features of the land. Condella explained, “[Iceland] is such a geologically active country, situated directly on a fault line between two tectonic plates, so the country is filled with volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls—but also farmland and geothermal pools of hot water.” He added, “We missed out on any volcanic activity. It was geologically quiet at the time…fortunately!” The Condellas were able to explore Iceland’s varied landscape, experiencing firsthand some of the unique wonders it provided. Vince Condella cited two E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

environmentally-based experiences as his most unusual on the Iceland tour, noting the contrast between the country’s hotter and colder formations: “Going underground into a lava tube was stunning, especially knowing the power of the hot lava that created the tube. But equally stunning was getting on a large four-wheel vehicle to climb to the top of a glacier and enter a tunnel inside the ice. From one extreme to the other, Iceland has it all!” The lava tube that the Condellas visited, known as Vidgelmir Cave, formed around the year 900. According to Condella, the lava tube, which is located between 50-100 feet below ground, had no notable smell, was “easily accessible with stairs” and had a comfortable Top left, Reynisfjara (Black Sand Beach). temperature. Both the lava tube and the glacier tube or tunnel are found northeast of Reykjavik, in the west-central region of Iceland. According to Condella, the human-made glacier tube or ice cave is located 4,760 feet above sea level on the Langjokull glacier. “At times the tunnel was quite narrow and also quite cold!” Condella said. “We were given spikes to put over our shoes and boots, called crampons, in order for our feet to grip the ice better.” Condella noted that “the lava tube and glacier were similar experiences in that they both involved walking in tunnels, but they differed in temperature…Each experience, whether in the ice or below the ground, lasted about 90 minutes, with a guide giving us explanations of what we were experiencing.”

“Residents of Iceland are so used to seeing the aurora that it doesn’t impress them as much as it impresses the tourists.” Condella notes.

380 West Main Street, Waukesha, WI 262.780.1191 Historic Waukesha Art District n

Iceland’s combination of volcanoes and glaciers provided a memorable, stunning contrast for Condella. He described their juxtaposition: “There are approximately 130 volcanoes on Iceland! Most of them are the cone-shaped variety and they dot the horizon for as far as you can see. Glaciers are also common at the tops of many of these volcanoes. All of this results in stunning waterfalls throughout Iceland.” According to Condella, vegetation covers only about 25 percent of the island of Iceland. “The land consists of a lot of cooled lava rocks, but over time some of this rock grinds down to allow growth. So while there was a lot of rock, the glaciers have helped to grind down the rocks and vegetation could grow.” Iceland’s animal population also captured Condella’s attention. He noted that “sheep farming is quite common. Icelandic wool is known for its quality and warmth.” He and his wife also “loved the Icelandic horse, a truly majestic animal.” This pony-sized animal is “found throughout Iceland,” usually at farms or stables, according to Condella. Around 100 are estimated to be wild. “When our tour visited a sheep farm in Iceland, we were able to touch the horses,” Condella recalled. Photographic opportunities abounded for Condella, who drew inspiration both from the striking landscape and its animal population. “There were so many things to photograph. Every direction I turned there was something Continued on page 28

RIVER’S END GALLERY

Bringing

Fine Art to Everyone n n n

NESTLED IN THE HEART of downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin, Rivers End Gallery is a hub of creativity and community. Since opening its doors in 2006, the gallery has been a staple of the local art scene, showcasing the work of talented regional artists and providing a welcoming space for art enthusiasts of all ages. The gallery is owned and operated by Joan Skimmons, who has a passion for art and a deep appreciation for the artists who create it. Her commitment to showcasing a diverse range of artistic styles and mediums is evident in the gallery’s ever-changing exhibits, which feature everything from oil paintings, fused glass, blown glass and jewelry. But Rivers End Gallery is much more than just a place to view and purchase artwork. Joan has made it a point to create a warm and inviting atmosphere where visitors can connect with the art. Many times, you will find Joan painting in her studio in the gallery rear or find her giving painting lessons to a beginner who needs a jump start. The gallery also hosts regular events. One of the gallery’s most popular events is the Waukesha Art Crawl, which is held five times a year on the first Saturday of March, May, August, October, and December. Downtown

River’s End Gallery n n n Waukesha comes alive with businesses, restaurants and bars participating. You will meet the artists and participate in a variety of related activities, such as live music performances. In addition to representing more than 50 local artists, Joan is also a talented artist. She spends her time creating paintings specifically for clients. She works closely with the client to bring their ideas alive – from the subject matter, hues, size, frame, and the price. There is a guarantee too. If the client is not satisfied with the painting, they do not have to purchase it, and there are no hard feelings. In addition to showcasing local artists, Rivers End Gallery also supports the community in other ways. The gallery frequently supports local charities and organizations, such as the Waukesha County Community Foundation. Joan’s background as a retired Senior Vice President from a large technology company where she worked as a marketing professional in business-to-business marketing and sales provided Joan with the business acumen to operate a successful art gallery for 18 years. For Joan, owning Rivers End Gallery is more than just a business - it is a labor of love. Her dedication to promoting local artists and fostering a sense of community is evident in every aspect of the gallery. It is also, a fulfillment of a life plan. Joan started painting in oils at nine years old and painted until age fifteen. Then she stopped to gain an education, work to fund the education, build a career, and later raise a family. She always promised herself that she would go back to art as a retirement gift to herself. In 2001, she began to paint again, and in 2006, she purchased a building in downtown Waukesha, remodeled it, and opened the River’s End Gallery. She has pleased hundreds of clients all over the country with her many commissions. Joan’s paintings are created in oil and/or acrylic paints. She paints all types of subject matter. Her style is very loose realism to abstract. When the gallery is open, you can find Joan in the studio and all are welcome to come into the studio and watch art in process. Joan explained, “I love the art and the artists I represent. They are wonderful and the art they create makes people smile. There isn’t anything better. And, of course, I am so very pleased when one of my paintings finds a new home.” Whether you are an art lover or just looking for a welcoming space to pick up a special gift, Rivers End Gallery is a must-visit destination in downtown Waukesha. n 24

Making Giving a part of Their Lives

Tony Wendorf, of Tony Wendorf & Associates, First Weber Realtors, carries his longstanding passion for charitable giving to the highest level. This past year, he gave to 16 different organizations, and in the year to come, he hopes to continue to expand this base of positive impact in the community. n n n

JANUARY 2024

WENDORF CREDITS his Catholic faith for much of the inspiration and drive behind his charitable activities. In his words, he is “pretty deeply involved in the Catholic church,” and closely follows the Christian tenet and Catholic social teaching of a collective social responsibility to preserve the dignity of our fellow humans, especially those in need. Wendorf has been a member of St. Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee for over 30 years, and carries the positive impact of this involvement on his life to this day. In his high school and college days, he enjoyed actively participating in committees and ministries at his church, and in the last ten years, he has been proud to add a greater financial contribution to his work there, in addition to

continued gifting of his time. In Wendorf’s words, “It started out with charitable use of my time, energy, resources and prayer, and turned into an opportunity to give financially and make a meaningful impact.” Wendorf incorporated the Christian cross into the letter “t” in his familiar “TW” brand, sharing with the larger community the wellspring of positive energy he draws from his active faith. He carries the Catholic teachings into all of his endeavors, particularly those involving charitable activities and giving. He thrives on reaching out to others, forging connections, and aiming to better the lives of those in his community and the world around him. “I see it very much as an obligation, and something we’re very proud to be able to do,” Wendorf explained. highest regard for maintaining the dignity of each person, and sees his charitable activities as one way to further this goal. “More than anything, it’s a call, a responsibility to help our community and participate in bettering it,” he said. “We try to be very intentional in our giving,” Wendorf explained. He gives to some organizations consistently each year; sometimes, this involves a donation of his personal time, and other times, it includes a financial gift. As someone who has always been “attracted to the concept of giving to make a difference,” Tony Wendorf says he “always [tries] to, if asked, give something.” Wendorf strives to grow his giving activities in conjunction with his business. Previously, he gave $100 donations for every closing he had, totaling $13,000 recently. This year, he has established a new challenge in his platform for giving. For any client who sends him a referral that results in a closed real estate deal, Wendorf plans to donate both to that client’s charity of choice as well as to the chosen charity of the referred friend. He explained, “The more business we get, the more impact we can make.” He envisions building his charitable impact into the future, stating, “Ultimately, we want to be able to continue to give more and more. I’d love to see us hit that 50,000 [dollar] mark and even 100,000 mark; even in the next five years, [to give] 100,000 dollars back to the community.” Giving to his community is an integral part of Tony Wendorf’s life. Some of his most memorable honors in this realm have been having the opportunity to be the presenting sponsor for a meaningful event. In his words, “I don’t really do a whole lot ‘little’ in my life.” Also essential to this life path is Wendorf’s astute recognition that his own blessings are an avenue for sharing with others. He notes that “the financial rewards we’ve been given can bless others. If money comes to you, it just sits there, but if we can spread it out, we can help others.” For those who wish to make giving a part of their lives, Tony Wendorf encourages a mindset open to sharing at any level. Whether donating time, service, or money, no gift is too small. He often notices that people hesitate to give because they worry that their gift may not be sizeable enough to make a difference. But Wendorf knows that any donation can have a positive impact for someone in need. “Start where you’re at—anything makes a difference— [there is] no amount too little or too big.” n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

Crownovers Restore The Brisbane House IN THE RIVER VALLEY AND WELCOME OVERNIGHT GUESTS

n n n

THE BRISBANE HOUSE, an important historic home in Arena, WI, has recently undergone an extensive and twice commended restoration. Wisconsin River Valley residents know the stone house as “the house that splits lightning,” on 18 wooded acres. William Henry Brisbane, a man we’d call a human rights activist today, built the house and surrounding buildings in 1868. Because there’s no other house like it in Wisconsin, it is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. In fact, the State Historical Society just presented the Brisbane House with the 2023 Board of Curators Restoration Award. Because of Brisbane’s legacy and the home’s singular form—impossibly tall and skinny, carved out of the stone from the nearby bluff—it’s a place worth highlighting. Samantha (originally from Milwaukee’s North Shore) and Bruce Crownover (from Los Angeles) and a business partner (in Madison) purchased it in April 2021 after Samantha had her eye on it for nearly 30 years. It was her vision to stabilize, restore, and rejuvenate this three-story gem. With over 30 years’ experience, she created a team of expert advisors, enthusiastic local crafts people, and volunteers, over 150 in all. Samantha led the full restoration of the main house in four and a half months, and

the adjacent summer kitchen in another two and a half. She received State tax credit for the restoration, which adhered to National Park Service standards. Brisbane came from Beaufort County, South Carolina, where his family had enslaved 33 people on rice and cotton plantations. He came to believe slavery was wrong and was forced to move north in 1835. A man of many professions, including minister, doctor, pharmacist, and State legislature clerk, he was most noted for his ardent abolitionism. He eventually manumitted and helped to establish the people his family had enslaved. As a tribute to Brisbane’s work, Samantha created a library of anti-racist literature and books by Black authors. She and Bruce (an artist and master printmaker formerly with Tandem Press) showcase contemporary art created exclusively by internationallyknown artists of color. The Crownovers hope guests will depart inspired by Brisbane’s courage. Samantha adds, “In the spirit of Brisbane, we want Brisbane House to be a place of peace, inclusion, creativity, and joy. We celebrate those who speak out against injustice. We are honored to be the next stewards of this important legacy.” It is now open for overnight guest stays. scenic. I just clicked the shutter on whatever looked interesting, which was nearly everything!” According to Condella, Iceland’s northern edge just reaches the Arctic Circle, at 66 degrees North latitude. Iceland’s weather is moderated by its proximity to the warmer waters of the Gulf stream, despite its location in the North Atlantic. During their trip to Iceland, the Condellas enjoyed comfortable weather for the season. Condella explained, “For our visit in mid-September, we enjoyed a fair amount of sunshine and daytime highs generally in the 50s, nighttime lows around freezing.” The Condellas enjoyed an additional visual treat during their time in Iceland. “…because we were there in mid-September, the amount of nighttime hours was increasing, and that increased our chances to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). We had three nights of really beautiful auroras,” Condella recalled. “One of the nights, they appeared as soon as it got dark, and by 9 p.m. it was quite a sight that covered the sky from one horizon to the other.” At other times, the auroras appeared closer to midnight. As a photographer, Condella noted that viewing the auroras in person, the lights appear duller than they do in photographic images. He explained, “the spectacular colors we often see in auroral images is usually a result of 5 to 15 second exposures with a sensitive camera sensor. However, in some cases, a dull green color can often appear with ribbons of red even to the naked eye.” From an interesting atmospheric and meteorological perspective, Condella noted that “residents of Iceland are so used to seeing the aurora that it doesn’t impress them as much as it impresses the tourists. They envy us for our lightning and thunder that we often get here in the United States. Thunderstorms are not that common in Iceland.” Vince Condella spoke highly of his experience of the unique and stunningly beautiful country of Iceland. For those who are interested in visiting this majestic northern island, Condella recommended seeking out a group tour. He explained, “Our tour guide was exceptional, a native of Iceland who knew the culture, the terrain, the language, and the folklore. Tours can transport you to the most scenic and interesting sites on the island.” Condella concluded, “I definitely suggest a visit to this unique location. Iceland is not only filled with many natural wonders, but the people are friendly and always ready with a smile.” n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

WHAT DOES CHRISTMAS MEAN TO YOU? Christmas is not any of the things with which it is usually associated. It is not Christmas cards, some pretty, some comic, some formal with only the engraved name of the sender, some including a detailed account of the family accomplishments during the 11 months preceding, some religious. Christmas is not presents, nor is it the sudden fear that we have forgotten to send a present to someone who should definitely not be forgotten. It is not eggnog parties supposedly toasting the spirit of the day. As a matter of fact, Christmas is not the conviviality so often predicated as the Spirit of the Christmas season. Christmas is not indulging oneself in Christmas cookies, candies, stollen, et al. It is not a season for reckless eating and drinking; nor is it proclaiming, “Merry Christmas” to one and all as one proclaims “Have a nice day” regardless of storms or blizzards. Christmas is not a plastic tree gaudily decorated nor is it a sturdy balsam ablaze with lights. Christmas is a private acknowledgement of a very special occasion whose significance lies in the consciousness of the individual. It may be based on legend or fantasy. It may be based on a stirring sense of a spiritual presence and power that defies explanation and yet is possessed of a depth of joyous peace.

by Ger trude M. Puelicher

This blessed cause for celebration is love as fine as steel and fragile as crystal. Love must hold firm like steel; it cannot be shattered like crystal. Love is the essence of selflessness, the epitome of givingness. What would happen if each of us who celebrates Christmas would spend just 15 minutes on Christmas Day sending love into the world, to everyone—stranger, family, enemy, friend, neighbor, business associates, relative? What would happen if children learning to say words were taught not only “I love Mommy,” “I love Daddy,” but “I love everybody?” With love, of course, must go faith. Christmas is faith. Faith in what? If scientists are working to develop synthetic life, where then is God, the Creator of the Life Force that is individualized as you and as me? With what are we tampering when mortal man believes it lies in his power to create life? If faith is, according to Hebrews XI “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” then should we not recognize without any question that God and the life that God has individualized as you and I are one? Yes, Christmas is many things to many people. However, must it not be a conscious realization of the Christ Spirit that dwells within each of us and that will govern our days with peace and love for all mankind according to our acceptance of its presence and power? n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
